Introduction and Initial Discussion

00:00:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello guys and welcome back to another episode of the daily GSPN West Ham podcast. I'm John by Jacob say hi mate.
00:00:15
Jacob
Hello, how are you doing?
00:00:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm doing okay. So today we are doing a prediction for the game that's coming up against Newcastle on Monday. It's a nervy one. We're very much in a precarious situation when it comes to the management. It seems like the conversations around Lopategi and his potential successor have massively increased. So what is your feeling about that? How does

Managerial Challenges and Support

00:00:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
that that kind of make you feel the fact that there is discussion about who might replace him?
00:00:45
Jacob
um I think that it's yeah it's a very awkward situation for us to be in. um you know He's kind of clinging on at the minute, I feel. um I don't think anything's for certain. I think they're sort of trying to keep their options open at the moment. And I think he's quite lucky after that last result, the Everton result, that we yeah that he's still here.
00:01:12
Jacob
so All I can hope is that there's some improvement. Um, cause at the end of the day, we don't want to see him not do well, to be honest, but you know, if it doesn't, if it doesn't pick up soon, then it's going to become more and more likely that they'll bring someone else in to try and fix it. Um, which you can't really blame them for. I don't think if we don't see the improvement, do you agree?
00:01:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, it's difficult, isn't it? Because with the next game, two games coming up, we've got Newcastle and then Liverpool. So when you're looking at the actual results, it's going to be really tough to get anything from either of those games because they're both really good sides.
00:01:48
Jacob
Yeah.
00:01:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
But having not managed to get three points against Everton, it then makes the pressure for these games so much more in games that are obviously a lot more difficult.
00:01:57
Jacob
Yeah.
00:02:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
We need to be taking the opportunities that we have against the worst teams, because then when we do come up against teams that are better, we can afford to not pick up points. But you know on the current run of form, we have to get points wherever we can. So it makes every game so much more so much more of a pressurized situation. so Yeah I'm completely with you I want Lopategi to do well

Managerial Replacements Debate

00:02:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
and it's not anything against him personally it's just when it has been so poor for so long it's it's tough to I know we probably say the same thing every week but where where else do you look other than to Lopategi and question what's going wrong so yeah hopefully we can do better it's going to be a tough game but I think like before basically every game that we've spoken about it's
00:02:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
we have the ability in the squad to do well and to play well and to get a result in this game and in most games because you know if if you go man for man with our squad and their squad it's I don't really think theirs is that much better to be honest so yeah I don't know we'll just have to kind of hope like we have been doing. um When it comes to talking about Lopategi's replacement Is there anyone in particular you think is kind of the main person who you think would be good for the job, who you'd want for the job, or are we in a position where we're looking to get rid of a manager without really having that much of a good replacement in place, kind of ready to take over if he does leave?
00:03:33
Jacob
Well, I know for a fact they will have been exploring possible replacements, you know, just for any sort of potential, you know, yeah if the poor one continues, you know, they've they've been looking at a other managers to potentially come in if needed.
00:03:52
Jacob
So I think I've seen some people talk about the potential of Moyes returning, um which I
00:03:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Bloody hell.
00:04:00
Jacob
don't think is ever going to happen to be honest i really don't um and i you what no no
00:04:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
I wouldn't want that for Moyes actually. Not even for us, for him. Moyes is a guy. I wouldn't want that for him because like you don't want hit him to be like the full back every single time.
00:04:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
Like I think David Moyes deserves to be respected in a job where he's given the opportunity and not kind of let go because we did let him go and we chose to do that. So I think we have to deal with that and not go back to him.
00:04:26
Jacob
Yeah, and I think from from the club's perspective, I think that would be extremely embarrassing to bring him back, you know, after the sort of transformation that they've attempted to make to then bring him back when, you know, he's got his way of playing. I think, yeah, that that would not be good. I mean, and I don't think he would necessarily be a you know, a bad manager and wouldn't get results for us like he has. But um yeah, that won't happen. So that one, very unlikely, is probably just speculation. um I think the main the main one, if we were to get a replacement, would be Terzic, who and worked at Dortmund and also was Bilic's assistant, I believe.
00:05:21
Jacob
and Yeah, he seems very sort of up and coming and exciting and he's young, well, in comparison to a lot of managers. um I think he'd probably be my my number one choice if you know if someone was to come in. I'm sure they've been looking at a lot more, but um yeah, he'd be my number one choice.
00:05:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I think the fact that he has been at West Ham in the past, I think, massively increases his likelihood of getting this job. I think anyone who's been around the club and has managed to get a kind of sense for what it's like and been to the training ground and understood what it is to be a part of West Ham, I think it makes them more likely to get the job and I think if they did get the job I think it makes them better at it because you know going into a club kind of without a lot of real insight into what it's like obviously you can read about it and you can talk to other people about it but the best way to get a proper sense for what a club is like is by going and spending time with the people that work there so the fact that he has done that I think would mean that he would be a good manager it's just I don't know I'm not a huge fan of manager talk when we already have a manager but
00:06:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
You know, when, when the conversation is happening, you have to be a part of it. You can't just completely shut it out because if, if Lopate you get sacked, if we get thrashed five nil by Newcastle, Lopate goes within like, what, where do we go?
00:06:49
Jacob
Yeah.
00:06:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
We've not, you know, we're not really understanding about who might potentially take over. So they're kind of uncomfortable conversations, but ones that need to be had. Um, okay. So we're going to go to our first advert and when we get back, we are going to do our lineup prediction.
00:07:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
Okay, so let's get into lineups. Probably we're gonna have a pretty good idea of what the

Lineup Predictions and Strategies

00:07:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
lineup's gonna be, especially with the suspensions, but I'd like you to run me through your whole lineup and I will tell you any places that I think I would do it differently.
00:07:43
Jacob
Okay, so i I'm going to go for Ariola if he's available. um Obviously, I think Fabiansky has earned his place. However, I still will always favor Ariola, I think, just for those clutch moments that he pulls out. I know Fabianzky is capable of the same. I just, I think I feel more comfortable with Ariola in there. And I think as long as he's fit, he should be first choice to be honest. I think that's, that's quite obvious to me anyway. And then I'd go Wambasaka,
00:08:26
Jacob
Kilman, Tadebo, Emerson. I think that's quite straightforward really. I don't think there's much, um anything else we can really do other than that to be honest maybe maverick panels but probably not um i think wanda sack will keep his place over so foul i would have thought um so yeah what what do you think about the fence
00:08:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I completely agree. I think if there's any chance of us creating a solid defense, we have to keep picking the same players because there's no way you're able to develop good partnerships with the players around you if you're not playing with them every week. so i think I think it's good that Mavropanos is there as someone who can fill in quite capably at probably either centre back spot, to be honest. and But, you know, we brought Tebowim for a reason. He is a player that was very sought after by a lot of teams. So the fact that he we got him, we can't
00:09:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
not use this opportunity to play him. And I think the partnership that him and Kilman could create is, I think it could be really good. So yeah, let's play them. I think that's probably our best chance of keeping a clean sheet with with ogar those guys that sent it back. Fullbacks kind of speak for themselves. um I think Aaron Mumbasaka will be really important for us this game because Newcastle have a lot of attacking quality and they've got players that like to beat a man. I don't know where Anthony Gordon will be playing. I don't know if he'll be playing on the left or on the right. But if he's matched up against Anwan Bataka, I'm really confident that.
00:09:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
and Wambasaka can hold him off and not let him get the best of him because I think Wambasaka is such a good defender and obviously Gordon is really good and he's really really quick and quite technically gifted, but Wambasaka is one-on-one defending is second to none really. so So that brings me a lot of confidence. And then on the other side, Emerson's ability to push forward is something that can contribute attacking. So so yeah, I think that's probably got that spot on.
00:10:26
Jacob
Okay, so then from my midfield, I think it would have to be... I don't know whether Alvarez is gonna start. I'm not sure his current fitness situation.
00:10:38
Jacob
um
00:10:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think you're still filming, isn't he?
00:10:41
Jacob
Alvarez.
00:10:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:10:43
Jacob
Is he?
00:10:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, he got the red card, didn't he?
00:10:46
Jacob
Oh yeah, of course he is, yeah.
00:10:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Sorry, I was conf confused.
00:10:48
Jacob
and So yeah, he won't be in a...
00:10:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
I was wrong. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:10:51
Jacob
Yeah. um that international breakers thrown me off.
00:10:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, no, you're right.
00:10:56
Jacob
yeah So I'd probably go, and I'd probably go, yeah, I'd go so check Paquetta Paquetta and Rodriguez probably.
00:11:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
Makes it a bit more difficult, isn't it?
00:11:13
Jacob
and I just think that the balance of those three is probably the the best, you know, with Rodriguez as kind of that anchor, sort of marshalling the back four, just stepping in when necessary. Paquetta being the playmaker and, you know, provider and then Sucek being the late runner into the box and the
00:11:38
Jacob
you know, just the the extra man that always seems to find himself in the right place. So I think those three are very good together. Obviously, if Alvarez was available, ah I'd have him in there every day of the week. um But the situation we're in, so that's what I'd go for.
00:11:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, you know what, I actually think I might go with Carlos Alaire instead of Paqueta. I know that might be a bit rogue, but Paqueta just hasn't been playing very well, you know?
00:12:02
Jacob
OK.
00:12:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
Like, obviously i've I've mentioned it a hundred times, but I think with all the stuff that's happened off the pitch and us not being as good as, you know, we have been,
00:12:08
Jacob
My.
00:12:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's someone that just hasn't lived up to anywhere near what his ability is. And I think Carlos Solaire has actually been quite positive when he's made substitute appearances. So I think change it. i Also, the danger with Paquetta is that if is if he's not at it, if his head isn't in it,
00:12:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
he He gets very frustrated, and you can see how frustrated he is by the way that he plays. kind of It's not that he stops trying, he just, in his frustration, isn't anywhere near as complete of a player as he is when he's on his day.
00:12:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
so the worry is that he doesn't have his best game and that kind of subsequently leads to us being maybe more defensively weak because he's not kind of doing the hard yards back and then also on the flip side attacking wise if he's not at it being the kind of right in the middle of the team, kind of making all the attacks happen. That's what you'd like from a player in that position. If he's not at it, it then puts so much more pressure on our wide players and they've done a good job so far. And you'd say that, you know, bone has probably been overall, I'd say our best player this season.
00:13:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
But we need to have players in there that are going to support and are going to bring stuff to the table. So I would potentially bench Paquetta. But you can always bring him off the bench, you know, like just because he's not starting doesn't mean you don't bring him on until the 80th minute. we We can change it a half time. You know, we we've seen that.
00:13:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
a lot of our changes this season have made an impact, but they've all been probably between half time and 60 minutes. Like in that little gap, it seems like we're making good substitutions and then the game is becoming better as a result. And what I'd like to see is the Keter not start him being on the bench, him watching the game and that kind of ignite that fire in him. So when he does come on, you know, whether it's at half time, 50 minutes, 60 minutes, whatever.
00:14:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
he then has the bit between his teeth and actually plays like the piqueta that we've missed so much this season and the piqueta of you know season last season and season before you know so I'd I say all that piqueta is probably gonna start and I just hope that he plays well because we've really not seen anywhere near enough from him this season so so yeah that's that's my idea to try and get the best out of him but like is it actually gonna happen I don't know I guess we'll just have to wait and see
00:14:39
Jacob
Yeah, i think I think it's hard to leave him on the bench. I think any any manager knows how good he can be and I think it is always a risk to leave him on the bench. But like like you say, even as a just having him as a sub, you know not necessarily getting this opportunity to start because he's not been up to his usual standard, might do him good. but I think the likelihood is he will he will play from the beginning. um For forwards, i think it will be I think it will be probably basically the same as what we've seen most weeks. Well, when Kudas hasn't been available, which will be um Antonio Somerville, Bowen, and um I think
00:15:33
Jacob
Yeah, I think I think that's what he's gonna go for I think that's his favorite There's not a huge amount of choice anyway, but I think that's what he'll go for. I don't think things will start um What do you think do you think that's the same Yeah
00:15:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I completely agree. It's with the CUDA suspension, it doesn't really leave us that much option. And we've full crew still being injured, not really, not really got more information on when he's going to be back.
00:16:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hopefully in the new year, I'd like to see some, some positive stuff about him being there, but I don't think anything before the new year is going to happen really at this point. um
00:16:08
Jacob
No.
00:16:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, it's the wide players are really good. I really like Somerville. Obviously he's been one of the better players for us this season. He's not played a huge amount, but when he has played, he's been really positive. And obviously I've spoken about Bowen earlier. He's kind of Mr. Consistent for West Ham. And I think he'll do really well in this game because the Newcastle's full backs are young and they are good, but Someone like bowen who's been performing in the premier league for so long if there's anyone that's going to be able to exploit a young kind of Pair of up and coming full backs. It's going to be him. So So yeah, and I think the way he plays is also slightly different to a lot of other premier league plays. He's way more direct I think there are a lot of other premier league wingers. I think
00:16:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
You know, you look at some of the better teams, they're more, they're good because they're part of a really good system and they're able to be really effective. But it seems like Gerald Bowen plays much more.
00:17:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
is less dependent on the system and more kind of of his own volition. So I like to think that Jared Byrne will be able to make a positive impact in this game. um And then Antonio, it it's really tough. We've had the same conversation 100 times about how we don't think that he's really able to lead the line for a full game. But you know he he has done a lot for us in the past and he gets picked to start basically every week so he must be doing something right in the manager's eyes and it's just good to know that we've got Ings on the bench who can come off come off the bench and make an impact which is what he's done you know quite a lot for us this season so yeah I just hope that for me it's all about how we start we'll get into more specific match predictions after an advert but
00:17:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
I just hope that we can perform well. Just put a good performance. We don't have to win. We don't have to blow them away. Just play well and let's build some momentum and try and go in a different direction. Okay. We're going to go to the advert now. And when we get back, we will give you our specific match predictions.

Match Predictions and Analysis

00:18:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
Okay, so I did a prediction podcast with the guys from the Newcastle GFPM podcast, and they were quite excited for the game, which was pretty demoralising, to be honest. um you know they
00:18:46
Jacob
the
00:18:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
They look like a team that's kind of coming into form in the past few games. They've played really well. I'm obviously being forest recently. That's a really good result for us. I've been really good and look what they did to us. So they've beaten someone who demolished us. I know we got a red card, but they were going to beat us regardless. So I think they approach it within an air of kind of pretty solid confidence, which you know, it's something that if we don't start well, we will get exposed very quickly because they do have really good attacking players like you look at exactly is one of the best strikes in the league. Obviously he's spoken about Gordon before he someone that's, you know, since signing from Everton, he's been so positive for them. And even like Harvey Barnes, someone who, when he first signed didn't really look that impressive, but now has started to really
00:19:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
improve as a player and I think he's also someone that's really dangerous so we need to watch out. Who would you say specifically are you wary of in that Newcastle team?
00:19:46
Jacob
i think I think Gordon the most. I think it's between him and Isaac, obviously. Isaac, just for that, just instinct, striker's instinct, always being in the right place and usually scores, you know, he scores most games. so Um, but I think the harder task we're going to have is trying to keep ahold of Anthony Gordon when he's running at full pace. You know, you, like you said, we don't necessarily know which side he's going to start at. Um, and if that's against neither, neither Wamba sack or Emerson or as quick as him, and they both have their defensive capabilities, but he is very dangerous and we saw it for England.
00:20:39
Jacob
We've seen it already a lot this season. I think we need to double up on him, you know, um as much as possible. And yeah, that that does worry me. That does worry me. If we can get, you know, Bowen and Wambasack to drop him back on one side and Somerville and Emerson on the other, I think that will definitely help.
00:21:02
Jacob
Um, but yeah, he's, he's always a threat. He's always a threat, especially against us who don't look like we totally know what we're doing a lot of the time. So he, he could punish us if we allow it. And I just hope we don't basically.
00:21:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, yeah, I completely agree that the danger is definitely there with him and and with so many other players in the team. I'd also like to give a shout out to Joe Linton because he's someone that, you know, it is quite well documented how he came into the striker and now has kind of turned into a a makeshift center mid winger situation.
00:21:28
Jacob
Hmm.
00:21:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
So he's someone that's really good. And and the thing with him is his physicality, like. having a team that are technically good like Newcastle and then having players in there as well that can adapt their game to play slightly differently of when I was talking to the guys from the Newcastle podcast, they were saying about how if if it's not going as well for them, they can just lump the ball up and Jolynn is so good at winning the the first ball when the ball is kind of smashed long. Basically, he's good at winning the knockdowns and he's good at playing in other players. That's
00:22:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
A player like that is always a risk because you know that the team has the ability to change the way they're attacking, at you know, the drop of a hat. And if he is given the ability to win those first-time headers, then we might be in trouble because, you know, a little flick on. And I know that Tadebo is relatively quick, and but Max Killman's not that quick. and their attackers are very fast so if they can win those knockdowns in behind then we could quite easily get exposed so yeah definitely have to be wary and I think having someone like Thomas Sujek in there to have a battle with Joel Inson for those aerial jewels I think will definitely help us a lot and I think Thomas Sujek would come out on top in those because I think his aerial numbers are always really good so
00:22:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, we just need to be really wary of a lot of players. And I guess you said that every game, but when we've been doing so badly, we just have to be defensively solid. um Okay, so give me your specific predictions for this game.
00:23:03
Jacob
Yep.
00:23:07
Jacob
I'm going to I'm going to go 2-1 West Ham.
00:23:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's tough, isn't it? Okay.
00:23:13
Jacob
I'm going to go 2-1. And I'm I'm going to predict... predict... I think we're going to score early.
00:23:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
day.
00:23:22
Jacob
I think we're going to...
00:23:23
Jacob
I think they're going to then level up. just before half time and um then I reckon we're gonna we're going to get a late penalty similar to Man United game. um yeah ah so I could be totally wrong, we could get battered and I wouldn't be surprised however um it seems quite pointless at the moment just to assume we're goingnna we're going to lose every single game because it will never it will never change otherwise. so I either hope they prove me wrong or prove me right with my 2-1 prediction um and hope that I'm not just completely delusional.
00:23:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Huge.
00:24:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I agree. yes We can either predict what is probably going to happen, which is what we lose, because going away to Newcastle in the sort of form that we're in is going to be really tough. But I think there is definitely a chance that we can get something from this game. And I'd say that in every game, because You know, we've seen so many teams beat other teams this season. It seems really unpredictable about who's going to win any game. So I think we have the chance of winning. I'm going to stick to the same podcast, the same prediction that I did on the podcast with the guys from the Newcastle pod. And I said, three, two to West Ham. I think we can see early.
00:24:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then the first half is really sloppy. And then in the second half, we make some changes. We come out firing, get a goal really early, and then it's kind of back and forth. So we equalize.
00:24:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
They go 2-1 up, we go 2-2, and then really late, we get 3-2, winner. Absolute scenes, limbs, unbelievable. West Ham are back, we're good. Happy days. That's the hope. But yeah, I guess we'll have to wait and see. It's going to be tough, but I definitely think we have the ability and we have the players. And you know if if we can get a little bit of luck and we can rely on the the ability of you know the players that do consistently perform for us, I definitely think there's every chance we win this game.
00:25:24
Jacob
Well, let's hope that they can do exactly what you just said. And we will see very soon.
00:25:30
