Toni Gonzalez
Welcome back to another episode where we're discussing ways to relieve stress and focusing on first responder wellness. um We're diving into something that we've discussed before, and those are challenges and and issues that we face as first responders.

Toni Gonzalez
And not only are we focusing on that or diving into that, we're really focusing on what is the best solution or tips or alternatives to help us deal with with stress.

Toni Gonzalez
While I've discussed stress in previous episodes today, I'll be focusing specifically on effective stress relief techniques that can help you cope with the unique pressures of your role as a first responder.

Toni Gonzalez
I have recently shared a lot of these tips with you before, but my take on it is why not talk about it more and more and more? Because we can easily just go from one tip to the next and not ever revisit it, but it's just not beneficial in my opinion to just let something go and not go back and

revisit it. So here I am with a quick recap on stress for first responders.
00:02:11
Toni Gonzalez
Okay. As we know, chronic stress can lead to burnout, anxiety, and a host of physical issues. So today, instead of revisiting the symptoms, let's focus on practical strategies that you can incorporate into your routine to help manage that stress when it arises.
Mindful Breathing and Physical Activity
00:02:35
Toni Gonzalez
Here's a refresher on some effective and manageable stress relief techniques tailored for your busy lifestyle. The first one is my favorite. And you know, it's my jam.
00:02:46
Toni Gonzalez
And yes, you just guessed it. Mindful breathing. We've talked about this before, but it's worth repeating. As I said, just five minutes of mindful breathing can ground you and help. What you do is you inhale in through your nose.
00:03:00
Toni Gonzalez
Hold for a moment and exhale slowly. You make this a habit during your shifts and in every moment that you catch yourself either tensing up, having a moment, just inhale and exhale.
00:03:14
Toni Gonzalez
The second favorite one is moving your body. Physical movement, regular physical activity has been shown repeatedly to reduce stress. Whether it's a quick workout, a short run, or another form of exercise, find what you like and do it.
00:03:32

And connecting with nature. If you get a break, step outside. Use those breathing techniques that you've learned. Breathe in that fresh air.
00:03:47
Toni Gonzalez
Yeah. And go for a walk. Walk in nature. If you're in New Jersey like I am, there's a huge storm out there. But I actually enjoyed walking in the snow with my dog today. And it

was a lot of fun. I mean, i did come back super, super frozen, but it was really a nice walk.

If you follow me on Instagram, I just did completed 21 days of journaling. Journaling is a great way to not only relieve stress, but to also connect with yourself and what you're thinking and your emotions. So writing about your experiences and feelings can be therapeutic.

today. So if you have a moment or you can come back to it and um yeah, and just relax and and take care of yourself. So let's take a moment to engage in a brief guided meditation practice. If you can do this right now, if it's safe for you to do so, if not, come back to it. This can be done anywhere. And I encourage you to try it during a break or before heading home after a long shift.
