Six months of weekly Fishes podcasts! This is episode twenty-six. A full classic television season’s worth of episodes. Thanks to all who have been with us so far, please keep listening and sharing with friends.

We’ve also made it to September, the heat has finally broken and we can turn the AC off at night. There’s a whiff off fall in the air, we have a taste for pumpkin spice and spend some time discussing what we love about Autumn and dig even deeper about some physiological reasons why.

We reminisce about our yearly family trips to Tanner’s Apple Orchard in Central Illinois. The apple cider cinnamon donuts and pickup football games with Dad. Nancy shares a story of how she and Tim (unintentionally) stole a bag of apples due to their toddler addled brains when Riley was little at an orchard in Indiana.

Our resident green-thumb Kathy gets excited about planting Mums. For dinner, we share a Kuntz family staple recipe Wild Rice Soup.

As Amy Poehler and Maya Rudolph say on SNL’s The Bronx Beat “It’s sweatah weathah!” So let’s jump in!

Gnomes and Rumors: Swinger Misconceptions

00:00:00
Speaker
And I love my gnomes. I have a couple of like fall gnomes that'll stay out until Thanksgiving. Is that rumor true that if you put out gnomes, you're a swinger? Are you trying to tell us something, Linda? No. What? i
00:00:22
Speaker
I don't care. No. Oh, that is crazy. Who came up with a gnome for that idea anyway? Pineapples is also supposed to be another thing which I don't get. I love pineapples, but I also don't share and don't like that's not what I put them

Technical Glitches and Podcasting Challenges

00:01:14
Speaker
with us. So let's jump in. Hello fishes. Hi.
00:01:22
Speaker
How's it going? Kathy, how's it going? So we had a little technical difficulty on my end this morning, which caused a major delay in our recording. So I'm a little bit miffed, to be honest, but I'm good. Shake it off. Shake it off.

Celebrating Milestones: 26 Episodes Strong

00:01:42
Speaker
That's right. It's all good. I mean, this part of the process, these things happen.
00:01:49
Speaker
These things happen. If I could just mention a glow for all of this. Tim, who helps us with this, and we like to call him producer Tim and also AKA my husband, um told us that today is our 26th episode or 26th. Yeah. Which is kind of amazing you guys. We've been doing an episode every single week for six months. And so like in the TV world, that's a whole um he's a season, right? I just wanted to kind of tell you something. So our producer, Tim shared with me that many podcasters quit after the first three episodes with only 10% of podcasts making it, it passed that stage and only 1% making it to episode 21.
00:02:45
Speaker
So that's pretty amazing statistic that I just thought I would share what he said. Yeah, we're doing great. We're doing great.

Life Updates and Charity Events

00:02:55
Speaker
That's amazing. We have a season under our belt. Yes. We have a season under our belt. And you know, these technical issues happen and we're still learning and we're trying to figure it out, but we're doing it and having a ton of fun. So for everybody who's been subscribing, listening to wherever they get their pods,
00:03:14
Speaker
Thank you for jumping in with us and continue to spread the word so we can continue to keep going and growing. Click that share button, y'all. All right. Love it. So let's do a quick check in. Outside of our technical difficulties, how are we doing? Well, I'm great. I have a quiet house. My husband is in Scotland with her oldest settling her in for her study abroad this semester. My other daughter's at school. Our son's in high school. um So our house is kind of quiet right now,

Back to School: Chaos and Mishaps

00:03:48
Speaker
which is nice. I've been doing all the things that I, all my little projects. So um yeah, we're good. I got to go to a polo match over the weekend with some friends. We did this
00:04:00
Speaker
ah polo for chuckers chuckers for polo. It's like a fundraiser for um ah disabled adults and children and they do like therapy on horses. And so it was a huge fundraiser for that. and It was a gorgeous day, beautiful fall afternoon, and it was a lot of fun. so Yeah, we're doing good. i hear When I hear polo match, I think a pretty woman. Is it like that? Well, it was like that. It was. Everybody got dressed up. We had tents. We decorated. We brought champagne and food and nibbles. That sounds fun. We all wore dresses and hats. And I did wear boots. And we did you know stomp the divots at halftime. So it was fun. Cool. Yeah. It was great. That's awesome. And for all for a worthy cause as well. So it's a plus.
00:04:49
Speaker
Love it. oh Thank you, Blair Teasdale for hosting us. My kids started back to school last week, so it's been you know good for everybody to get back in a routine.

Vegas Heat and Sports Adventures

00:05:03
Speaker
um I actually work at my kids' school on Mondays and sometimes fill in other days, but My first day back, I thought it'd be like easy going, no big deal. But I was like thrown into the fire. I mean, we were so incredibly busy. I was like, what is going on? So Kathy, so Kathy, can I ask you what do you do for the school? Like for our listeners, what work do you do for them?
00:05:34
Speaker
So I work in the school store, which is like they sell all kinds of the school apparel, like sweatshirts and ties and everything. But um they also have a cafe and I mainly work in the cafe. So I make drinks for the kids, lattes, like, you know, a lot of kids come in for snacks, whatever.
00:05:58
Speaker
But it is incredibly busy during certain times of the day. And my first day back was not to ease in. It was, oh, you've been here for to the fire a year. And you know what else I did, I spilled something which I have never done. Because we were so hectic, I was feeling the stress of it all. And I think I just got like two, I don't know. I lived What about you Nancy? What's going on in your life? Just what did we do this weekend? I had to go to Las Vegas for a soccer game with my kids.
00:06:34
Speaker
Riley played in a game, just one game. It's not tournament. It was just one game, but I ended up taking Johanna and Riley. So it was fun. You know, it's really, I don't really want to talk about weather too much, but it's really still really hot. Like in ah Los Angeles, it's 108 still. So imagine going to Las Vegas.

Fall Fervor: Sweaters and SNL Skits

00:06:54
Speaker
I feel like I'm on the sun. So even though I had fun being with the kids,
00:07:00
Speaker
I'm melting here and it's really messing with my mood, let' happening has which has us all thinking about our topic for this week, which you all are super into it, which is fall because where you all live, it's starting to cool down and you're getting excited about all things fall. So we were thinking it'd be fun to maybe talk about all things fall. And you guys are so excited. If you watch the podcast,
00:07:28
Speaker
like through Apple or whatnot and you choose to watch the video, you'll see that they've shown up in matching sweaters that say three little fishes on it. But I could not wear mine today because I'm sweating and I could not put a sweater on. You couldn't take it. also You bailed. I bailed, but you all look super cute. So today we're talking everything full. My friend came to visit and she was here all weekend for a golf tournament with her husband. and She was laughing at me because I actually was cold. Like it's 70, 80 degrees here, which is warm. But like at night, it's cooling off a little bit. And I kept telling her like, I'm feeling a little cold. Should we turn on the fire? She's like, what?
00:08:17
Speaker
So she was totally making fun of me. You know, I live in the South. It's been brutally hot here as well, but we are getting this like little breath of fall. It's getting in the fifties at night and it just makes me think about all things fall. Like we're back in school. We've been in school for a while. We're now talking about fall break with my son who was trying to go down to the beach.
00:08:38
Speaker
for fall break, which is in October. And we're just loving all of the fall idea, like concepts. And it made me, i it it's so apropos to like, I saw a little clip the other day on TikTok or whatever. And that was that SNL skit of Amy Polner and Maya Rudolph. time being And they're talking about fall. And they're like, the weather broke.
00:09:06
Speaker
Sweater weather. Sweater. Sweater. I love the sweaters. Sweater weather. And it's just like it's so real for me because that is so how I feel like it starts to cool off. I can't wait to get on my leggings and my sweaters and start layering and Doing all the fall things. Me too. Me too. I love the sweaters. Sweater weather. I love the cashmere sweaters. I like cashmere sweaters. Nobody loves a cashmere sweater

Why We Love Fall: Psychological Insights

00:09:34
Speaker
more than Kathy. And dad. Oh, and dad. Yeah, for sure. You know what? Just to give you a little thing, I looked into it. And there are psychological reasons why we love fall.
00:09:47
Speaker
So like, you know, some are super busy, right? And so you're traveling and you're out of a routine and fall, like you get back into school and you're back in a routine and then you're able to see friends again more regularly, which is, I love to be out of a routine, but I'll be honest. I feel this like I'm super happy that my kids are back on some sort of schedule.
00:10:09
Speaker
yeah So that fits for me. They also say color, the temperature when it starts to cool helps people get out in nature and go see the changing trees. And maybe you're a little bit more active because you're not melting in 108 degree weather like we are right now. And then they also say cooler temperatures make you think more clearly.
00:10:32
Speaker
And I think there might be some truth to that because again, I told you I'm melting here and I feel like my brain is mush. So me do they feel like more agitated when you're super hot or do you feel more lazy or do you kind of roll with it or like ah what are your feelings?
00:10:50
Speaker
I want to be the person that rolls with it. But honestly, I am so uncomfortable when I'm hot that it's very difficult for me to funk. Like I'm aware, I'm aware of it. And I have to really tell myself, everybody's hot. This is not an excuse. Like, you know, mom used to be like, when we got that time of month, she'd be like, nobody needs to know it's that time of month. And that does not give you a pass for being rude or irritable to people. So that thought process has always stayed with me, but it is very difficult to treat your brain like just because

Seasonal Changes and TikTok Gardening

00:11:20
Speaker
you're uncomfortable in whatever manner you don't get to act out. So, you know, what is so funny too, I think about that is like,
00:11:28
Speaker
When spring hits and you start to get those really warm days, you're so excited. Because like I get excited about wearing my sun dresses, my tank tops, and being out in the pool, and being out in the yard, and all that stuff. But as the summer wanes, you get sick of it. like You're tired of the sunshine. like We haven't had rain in Middle Tennessee in weeks. And we're we're all kind of like craving some cooler time.
00:11:57
Speaker
So I think kind of as the season changes too, you start to get to that like right sort of natural arc in your so I don't know. Yeah. Seasonal cycle that you're ready for the next thing. So I totally, I feel that and I think you're so right. I think it's such a normal, and I don't know if it's that we grew up in the Midwest and the seasons are so definitive that it's sort of like in our DNA. Yeah. Because here it's more like washed over, you know, we do have four seasons, but it doesn't get like brutally cold with deep snow like I had in Chicagoland. But we are getting cooler and it is nice and we are getting out and about. i am And I'm starting to think about doing all the full things. Like when I'm done here this afternoon,

October Birthdays and Childhood Traditions

00:12:43
Speaker
I don't know if people know this about me, but I watch TikToks and waste time on my phone doing these things. And I watch this TikTok that I'm going to do this afternoon.
00:12:56
Speaker
And I got two big buckets, and I put shredded toilet paper and grass seed, and I filled it with water last night. And I'm going to spread it on some of the bare spots in our yard and patch the yard today, wow like a crazy person. And we are supposed to get rain this week. So I think, OK, let's see how this goes. like It's made sense to me. Instead of buying like that patch repair, I made my own patch your repair. Yeah.
00:13:24
Speaker
Nobody loves to try it. That's ingenious, Linda. like and My husband actually is planting some seed today because we have a cherry tree that we planted this summer that he's going to put grass around. But our yard has some bare spots that we definitely need to reseed. So now's the time to do it. Yes. And um I mean, I love fall. Fall is honestly my favorite, I think. I love it too.
00:13:52
Speaker
I think I have a birthday in October. So I think I always look forward to just the change of seasons and then and your birthday. My birthday. I mean, what are listeners? What our listeners don't know, Kathy, is is that nobody loves a birthday like you do. Like I like birthdays, but you love birthdays like it's the birthday month for you are a birthday girl. Yeah, I love celebrating everyone's birthday.
00:14:17
Speaker
And I think October is just a fun month because, you know, like you say, it's the start of fall. It's the start of like football games, high school football games. It's the start of college football. The NFL, like all that stuff is so fun to watch. So and then like, you know, as we were growing up, you guys remember we used to always go to Tanner's orchard.
00:14:46
Speaker
Yes. I mean, we probably, we probably, so Tanner's orchard is located like outside of Peoria, Illinois. And I think it's in Speer, Speer, Illinois. Yeah, it it was probably what, like 25, 30 minutes from Peoria? Yeah. And so when we were growing up as an elementary kid, like we always took field trips out to Tanner's Orchard and they would have, they'd show us the fields and then they'd take us behind the scenes and show us everything about how they make the apples and what they do with it. and
00:15:23
Speaker
like over the years the orchard has just really grown. I mean and you're totally you're totally right like just to back up a little bit it's grown so much like remember when we first started going you used to be able to drive your car through the orchard and we used to hang out the windows and pick the apples and then as it's gotten bigger I don't think you can drive back there anymore can you Kathy? I don't know I well you know we actually took I don't think you turn out you i think you have to take a tractor or if you want to go to the outer orchard area, then you have to take a tractor. But, you know, they definitely have grown so much that they've evolved. But the favorite thing, like when we were kids in elementary school and even when we were in high school, we would go every year and visit Tanner's and we'd pick the apples. Then they had like a petting zoo and they had like a little
00:16:20
Speaker
like outdoor playground that we'd like mess around with. yeah yeah Always after that, we would end up getting the cider and the apple cinnamon donuts, right? cite Apple cider cinnamon donuts. Right, apple cider, that's right. And then we'd end up going to like a park and we'd eat all the goodies and then we'd play football.
00:16:47
Speaker
yeah And we did that every year that I was in high school. And then, you know, it's fun too, is I actually have gotten my children to even do Tanner's Orchard. So when we've gone to visit you know, our mom and dad, my kids have experienced tanners as well. So I feel like it's a really cool. Yeah. That's one of those memories you can't replace. And we didn't even your, your daughter, Sarah want to go to tanners just recently. Before she went to Scotland, she tried to get there. But we just ran out of time. She had so many other things happening. So
00:17:25
Speaker
It is definitely a core memory. we She and I went to a little orchard um here in Middle Tennessee before she left and it was so tiny and it was like in its infant stage compared to Tanner's. Yeah. And we both were like, okay, this is fine. It's not that great.
00:17:47
Speaker
It was just like, fine. I mean, it's hard to replicate it. I mean, Tanner's has figured out something special. And when we, when Tim and I had Riley, like when he was one, we lived in Indiana at the time. And I was like, we couldn't get to Tanner's for whatever reason. And Tim's like, well, let's go to the orchard with there's an orchard here. I don't remember what it's called. And we went And like, it was nice and we got to pick apples for sure, but it was a smaller scale. But you know what I really remember about that time is the time that I accidentally stole the apples because, and I still live with this, like Riley is 15 years old and I think he was one at the time that we went. And it was like, you had to like, you could put your apples by your car and they took it, you had a ticket and then you had to buy the apples at a separate place. And then there was also a store where you could buy like,
00:18:39
Speaker
caramel apples and whatever, which I did, but I think we forgot to go to the other stand to pay for the apples. So when we got home, we started talking about it. We're like, how much for the apples themselves? And Tim's like, I thought you paid for the apples. I'm like, I thought you paid for the apples. So I'm like an apple stealer on purpose. on accident Like on accident. I didn't mean to steal these apples.
00:19:04
Speaker
i And still to this day, I feel guilt about it. Let it go. who yeah but dar mean It's an accident. And yeah but honestly, it sounds like they were making it hard to pay for them. It was just an oversight, Nancy. No big deal. yeah no basic of but Give us a look. Mrs. Tanner,

Decorating for Fall: Gnomes and More

00:19:24
Speaker
i always like every time I saw her, I thought, oh my gosh, you're the coolest lady. like and She just was cool. Grandma Taylor does TikToks. Did you guys know this?
00:19:34
Speaker
Do they? No. Yes, she does TikToks and Grandma Tanner will like the other day she was making um apple muffins. Yeah, so much checker I mean, like all those baked goods are so good. I mean, they've expanded so much. They have like a kitchen now. I mean, you know, from 20 years ago, you'd never recognize it, right? I just thought she was really down to earth and she would be like so excited when people came to visit and she would be, you know, explaining about the history of the orchard and then show us in the kitchen.
00:20:09
Speaker
like what they're doing. She's just like a generous soul. yeah you know She's just like very pure, generous soul that is genuinely happy at what she does. And I think that is so contagious when you go there. It's such an authentic experience when you go to a place like that. So it's pretty cool.
00:20:31
Speaker
my kids what they went to visit like I think the animals were a huge hit because they have a petting zoo and they called the sheep and stuff and I was always like I'll make sure you disinfect your hands because
00:20:44
Speaker
feeding these nasty goats. Billy Bob is dirty. Totally dirty. Well, the other thing I really like about fall, that and i wish i I wish I lived in an environment where I didn't have to do this, but I rotate my clothes. So like I move my summer clothes kind of to the back of the closet and I put my fall and winter clothes sort of to the front of my closet and I sort of rotate things around. yeah And then I take this opportunity to sort of clean out like my summer t-shirts for some reason, they always get sort of mangled. And so I ended up donating a bunch and I just take this opportunity to you know kind of sort through what I have and then rotate it around. And I get so excited and I'll pull down my sweaters from the top of my closet
00:21:36
Speaker
And I'll be like, oh my gosh, I love this sweater. I'm so happy to see it. And I can't wait to wear it. but la whatever know And I pants out and I rotate them and I put the linen away and I rotate my dresses and I just get so excited to try and, you know, wear the clothes that I haven't worn for a while.
00:21:58
Speaker
So Linda, that's another like like like psychological reason why people like fall. They love to get into their more cozy clothes. And ah like also, they feel like you don't have to worry so much. like In summer, you're wearing less clothes and less fitting. And maybe you worry about your physical appearance more. And with your cozy clothes, you don't have to worry so much about that. So people feel more relaxed of what they're wearing. yeah Just a little nugget there of why people also like it. I get that.
00:22:26
Speaker
I get that. Yeah, you know, um the other thing I really like about fall is all the food. So I was reading about um nutrition, you know, in the fall, it's harvest time. So it's we get all this fresh fruit and veg. And obviously, we just talked about apples, but it's also pumpkins and squashes and tomatoes and all the melons and all the leafy greens, like everything corn, everything's

Fall Harvest: Nutrition and Health Tips

00:22:57
Speaker
harvested now. So our menus are just like very nutrient dense in the fall, which is great and it sort of gears us up nutrition wise to get through the long winter now.
00:23:12
Speaker
you know I live in the South now, so we don't really have like tough winters. But there is something about like um the nutrition that we need in the fall. And it's I read something from this. um I'll put the article at the end of the in the show notes. But they were talking about how important it is to maintain getting, because the days are shorter, so we still need to maintain getting our vitamin D. So try and get outside and get your sunlight in the winter to sort of like We'll talk about this in the winter, but you know sometimes you need to do a supplement so you don't get the blues. um But there's some foods that are rich in vitamin D, salmon, cheese, egg yolks, milk, cereal, fortified orange juice. We still need our vitamin C to mute to boost our immune system because the flu season is coming. um And then in the winter, we need more iron. So we need to make sure we get
00:24:07
Speaker
you know enough oxygen transporting through our bodies. So like lots of lean meats, seafoods, beans, dark leafy vegetables, and spinach. And then we need our fatty acids to um maintain heart health and lower the risk of arthritis, which can flare up. So you know as fall hits and we're prepping our bodies for winter, just make sure you get enough of the you know, the fatty acids, fiber, and then remember to stay hydrated because we don't always drink enough water in the fall because it's just we're not hot and sweaty, but it is so important. Yeah. So that's a good tip. Yeah. I mean, that's something I really do love about fall, though, is like the bounty of all the produce, yeah fruits and veg. So
00:24:59
Speaker
you know, enjoy them and continue to try and enjoy them as we get through. Like in the summer, you're trying not to eat too much. You're like, yeah I'm in a skeepy outfit. Putting on the pads. We're trying to just eat a bounty of like good nutrient dense foods. And it's easy to do because you want to like throw it all in a soup or, you know, yeah right, a pot roast or whatever. So you can, you know, get all that nutrition in you. So it's, I mean, it's such a yummy time of year. I'm a big fan of pumpkin and apple anything. Yeah. Yeah. I'm loving it. I also like in the fall, just the change of decor. And like, you know, you have
00:25:51
Speaker
like you're saying the harvest, like changing out your summer, wreath on the door to a fall, harvest something. And then I always put in mums. Yeah, like I put I put mums in my backyard on my pots. And then I actually had planted a mum last year.
00:26:13
Speaker
that actually survived the whole year. And yeah in the ground and the ground, I did, I put it in the ground. And this year, it's huge. And it's, I see buds on it. And that's amazing. Yes.
00:26:27
Speaker
I'm going to have a mom. I love that for you. You have kind of a little bit of a green thumb. I don't know. I don't know where you got it. Because if mom, if you're listening, no offense, you do not.

Gardening Woes: The Mums Challenge

00:26:38
Speaker
You put in you put in plastic moms. ah So I also don't have a green palm. So I don't know. I don't know where Kathy got it. Who is a green thumb? I don't know. I love water.
00:26:54
Speaker
of water. A little water does a lot of good um water. Well, that's the problem is like you have to water mom so much. And I get to a point where I'm like, I'm over you. So I didn't even I was at the store yesterday, I didn't even buy moms because I was like, am I gonna do it? Am I actually gonna water you? That's why I planted one because I was like, I kind of do get tired of putting them in my pots. And then you like have to throw them away. That's wrong. And I'm like,
00:27:23
Speaker
Can't they just survive year after year? So I tried it and my one did well. Yeah. That's amazing. I'm super happy for you. i We live in the desert. So it's like, I don't love tap to

Football and Family Fun

00:27:36
Speaker
water. So that's maybe my problem is what you pointed out is water. So we're happy to have that.
00:27:43
Speaker
I love mums in the fall though. They're so pretty. And I especially love those like burgundy ones that get really big. Yeah, a little bit of color is really nice. So pretty. Yeah, especially after all the leaves fall to have like, and it lasts for a long time. I mean, that'll get you through to December with some pretty flowers.
00:28:04
Speaker

Johanna even likes to watch it. She gets excited to watch anything. And so it's fun to be able to come together and like root for something together. And I feel like that's a fun thing. We're going to UCLA, um Indiana game, um, this weekend, um, Tim and Tim did his undergrad at, um, Indiana university. I got my master's at Indiana university. So I think this time we will be rooting for Indiana.
