Happy Woo Wednesdays!

I have my good friend Joyce Choi (photography) in the HECK YES house.

She went through my 3-month coaching program 2 years ago. Now is fully booked and started a beautiful bridal studio in LA call House of Maray. She is also my lead associate photographer.

https://www.instagram.com/houseofmarey/

House of Marey is a Minimal, Pre-wedding, Luxury, Editorial Studio with all-inclusive bridal gowns and HMUA. I went there and it was glorious full of 4 rooms to shoot (Korean inspired).

Now you don't have to go to Korea or Thailand to get this type of photography and experience. You don't have to worry about the weather either.

She hired me as her coach because she didn't know what the sales call was. Now she has mastered the sales call. So proud of Joyce.

Today she shares her journey with opening House of Marey, finding the home, renovating it, curating all the designer dresses and her big vision. Joyce is revolutionizing the industry.

Joyce said her fave get a HECK YES technique is to study your craft every day to get inspired.

00:00:30
Speaker
And at the end, she talks about how it was her experience with working with me and how I helped her with mastering the sales call and so much more. So that brought a little tear to my eye and I'm just super proud of her for all she has accomplished.

Joyce's Background and Transition to Photography

00:02:05
Speaker
Hey everyone, welcome back to Get a Heck Yes with me, your host, Carissa Wu. I have my dear friend Joyce Choi from Joyce Choi Photography. She went through my three month program for coaching, and she's an amazing wedding photographer in LA. And she just started a new studio, House of Moray in LA, and it's a beautiful bridal studio. So we're gonna talk all about that today. But welcome, Joyce, what's up?
00:02:33
Speaker
Hi, how are you? Carissa, thank you for having me. Yes, thank you so much. Me and you have been busy this year, but I guess tell us about yourself just from all the way from childhood, like what you're like as a kid, and a little bit about your journey to what got you into photography and now own your own bridal studio in LA.
00:02:59
Speaker
Okay, um, yeah, I born in Korea, I born in South Korea, not North Korea. Yeah, I immigrated to US when I was 19. So I basically came here as an international student, then I, I, like, I kind of
00:03:23
Speaker
I studied in computer science, I majored in computer science, but I always had photography as a hobby, I always had the heart for the art. And then, yeah, I started to doing as a hobby was like when I was in high school, back in Korea, back that time, I tried to use the film, you know, film camera back in the days, you know, those, you know, FM
00:03:51
Speaker
three, you know, those very old ones. And then I tried to have it and it was really remarkable things to do for me. So it was really enjoyable hobby for me. Now, when I was in school, you know, a lot of like students who get married in the early stage, they are looking for friends who knows to do, you know, photography for their wedding photo. So I started from there.
00:04:20
Speaker
One of my friends tried to get married and they need some photo for their, you know, like, uh, magic certificates and stuff. So yeah, that's where I started. Yeah. That's where I am right now. And then I, in terms of being a professional photographer, I really, um, I felt like I need to learn from, you know, other photographers. So I decided to join to some kind of studio in LA.
00:04:50
Speaker
after I graduated. So yeah, I have been working in the baby studio for like, three and a half years. Wow.

Joyce's Photography Style and Vision

00:05:01
Speaker
Yeah. And then after that, I moved into some kind of fashion company for the fashion photography.
00:05:08
Speaker
So I did some fashion photography here and there. Even now I do like commercial stuff here and there as well. You know, like friend photographers who is referring me.
00:05:22
Speaker
Yeah, that's where I am. And then I always had a passion for the weddings because of emotions going on, all the beautiful things. I love anything pretty, basically. And also I love to do like romantic
00:05:38
Speaker
You know, like I love to watch romantic movies, K-dramas, you know? That's all the girls are, I guess, they're coming from. So I really wanted to recreate my own version of K-drama with my clients. That's why I'm in the wedding industry.
00:05:56
Speaker
Oh, that's a really good answer. I love that. Yeah, yeah. So I have still not to yet to watch my first kdrama. So you have to tell me what I should watch for. Okay, that's a hard one. Yeah, yeah. Tell me the transition from computer science to helping with your friends weddings and then just becoming like a full time wedding photographer for Joyce Choi photography.
00:06:26
Speaker
Yeah, so I was, at first I was kind of into some kind of company that like doing some programming works, you know, like software engineer works. But when I went there, I feel like I had, I kind of saw my limits. And then I felt like I need to study more in terms of, you know, like kind of going into master's, going into doctorate degrees to get better levels in some sort of way.
00:06:56
Speaker
And at the same time, there were two people that inspired me to start my own things. Literally, one of my friends told me to, oh, you're, you know, like, I also helped my friend's wedding. And then she told me, I think you're really kind of out of talent with it. So I'm like,
00:07:18
Speaker
Oh, really? Yeah, I didn't know. But she said, you can definitely get paid with these. So yeah, that is true. And then I thought maybe I can try with, you know, just working as a side gig during weekends. But once I jump into that,
00:07:39
Speaker
One thing I learned is if you don't go 100% with it, you cannot be that much good. So I decided to, okay, you know what, I'm still young. If I fail with it, then I can go back to school, get some master's degree. For now, you know, like as a programmer.

Pursuing Photography Full-Time

00:07:58
Speaker
Yeah, that's what I thought. So okay, you know what? I'll just try. I'll just try. I was young at that time. When I was at that time, it was like 26, 25. So it was pretty young time. So
00:08:11
Speaker
And yeah, that's why I decided to, you know, like, okay, let's just try out. Let's just try out two to three years. Once I'm not on the floor, then I'll just move out, move on, and then go back to the school and then study more. And then come out as a, with a better, you know, better. You got trapped in, you got trapped in the wedding, the wedding hall. Yeah, it's a fun thing. And then I, yeah, after that, I kind of saw my limits as a,
00:08:41
Speaker
you know, like with my photography skills and I felt like I need to learn more. So I decided to apply for the studio and then that's what happened. Amazing. How would you describe your photography style?
00:08:58
Speaker
My photography style is light and airy and warm. That's my go-to style, I would say. But it's more mix and match documentary. At the same time, it's more like posing. I kind of want to have a variety in my gallery. So I definitely want to have classical to editorial look throughout the gallery.
00:09:22
Speaker
Yes, it's amazing. I would say you're pretty much like my best second shooter. So I get the most or associate shooter too. I get the most amazing images and I could trust

Challenges and Cultural Influences

00:09:35
Speaker
you completely. What is the biggest struggle of your business and how did you overcome it? I still have my biggest concern would be I wanted to go with more
00:09:51
Speaker
Um, high-end clientele at the same time, I want to go more like working with a different, you know, ratios, but sometimes as an Asian woman, it's kind of hard to overcome. I still feel like there, there is some, you know, like boundaries for us to grow. So yes, I can be, um, I can go any Asian, you know, weddings to achieve that, but it's kind of hard to overcome with our racial differences.
00:10:21
Speaker
Yeah, I agree. Interesting. What would you say like, what is your move factor? What makes you stand out? Or you could answer like, what is your biggest like, heck yes, technique? How do you get that heck yes from your dream client? I guess, definitely Karisa saw my, you know, like, you saw my gallery, and then you tell me you can, you can go up your price, you can be
00:10:46
Speaker
go up your game, you're capable of, you know, like you gave me the confidence, how to be in front of the clients. And then literally, because of the feedbacks, I could get more, you know, like, I can tell my clients more confidently, I can do this, you know, I can do that, you know, like, I can do so much for you, so you can trust on me. At that time, I felt like, am I capable of or not? I was still hesitating at that point.
00:11:15
Speaker
But someone else is giving you honest opinion about your work. It's more giving me the genuine confidence, literally. So that's how I felt. Oh, I love that. Yeah, you kind of stepped out of your shell and you're doing an awesome job.
00:11:34
Speaker
So just for the audience, I actually was picking up photos from Joyce. She associate shot for my company and I went to pick up her, the photos from you at your studio. So you said, Hey, Chris, if you want to come to my studio, I said, yeah, I'll check it out. So I walk in while it's a house, literally a house full of like one, two, three, like four rooms.
00:12:02
Speaker
of glorious dresses from all different designers, shoes. There's a beautiful bed you could jump on. There's all these different backdrops. There's a flower backdrop. There's a beautiful bathroom that you can shoot in. So I was
00:12:20
Speaker
crazy impressed I was like wow because you don't even post that on instagram yet but tell us like what was your vision how did you come up with this amazing bridal studio called house of moray and just tell us all about it yeah um the name of moray is counterspelled of my korean name so I definitely wanted to have more a little bit more of my cultural side and then Korean style studio definitely
00:12:49
Speaker
And then in Korea, it's kind of like they turn into a house into a studio space. It's kind of been
00:12:59
Speaker
like trending going on for a while. So I decided to wanted to bring it out here at U.S. for since, you know, Korean thing is kind of hip right now. Yay to the BTS. So yeah, that's why I maybe I can try out some, you know, show my cultural aspects and maybe people would love it, you know, so that kind of thing. And yeah, and I wanted to have
00:13:29
Speaker
I'm happy that I saw all-inclusive, you know, with the dresses and the hair and makeup artists, very talented hair and makeup artists here in LA. And then I have some florists who would love to work with me. I do have like a preferred florist so that there are some new terms for the
00:13:51
Speaker
Floral flower directing it's called it's it's the same thing as a let's say I think as a wedding or Lutman you would have some floral backdrops here and there for them.
00:14:04
Speaker
arch area, you know, the altar area. So that's pretty much it. That's that we are bringing into the studio for the, you know, with the controlled lighting. So much safer than the outdoor. I'm not sure, you know, like these days, California has a really bad lighting.
00:14:26
Speaker
We've been having some June gloom for sure Memorial Day weekend was really great. Okay, so take me to like the thought process of when you kind of decided you're going to do this, how you even found the house, how you decorated,

Establishing the Bridal Studio

00:14:44
Speaker
it seemed like a lot of work. So just take me through like, your journey.
00:14:50
Speaker
Yeah, my husband's father-in-law is a real estate agent. So he found the studio and then he knew someone, the owner who is, he has a personal connection. So the person gave us the great deal and then allow us to like, to some, you know, like renovating the house itself too. So yeah, we did that. And then, yeah, literally we did it by ourselves.
00:15:18
Speaker
know like hiring the you know like not hiring entire contractor hiring you know individual contractors who can do the flooring who can do like this who can do that yeah that's how it happened and then i made a huge mood board what to do and stuff so yeah yeah yeah yeah i wanted to be more simple and clean look than the
00:15:41
Speaker
something has very vibrant or like distinguishable. I just wanted to be entire house to be in a same color palette so that it can be like just being in a same more neutral color palette.
00:15:58
Speaker
Yeah, it's very calming. How did you carry all those dresses and accessories and shoes? Did you just start buying because it's extremely, extremely gorgeous, elegant dresses, puffy. Did you just start buying? Take me through that thought process.
00:16:18
Speaker
Um, like, at first when I just started my photography business, I had to buy some dresses here and there for the style shoot. You know, you know what I mean? Yeah, a lot of authors buy some dresses here and there for like, walking through.
00:16:35
Speaker
AliExpress. I even went through Taobao. I don't speak Chinese at all. I cannot read. It's literally a picture for me. It's not even a letter. I have no idea what that is, but I just use it as a thanks to the AI these days, you can search with the photos.
00:17:00
Speaker
just walking through that. And then like, if there is something that I like, I bought it and Savo has a like, kind of if you type in US address, just send it to you, it takes a long time. But still, I can receive it.

Creating a Unique Client Experience

00:17:15
Speaker
So yeah, it was it was kind of bad. And then
00:17:19
Speaker
I used a lot of Google translation as well. Yeah, one attorney and then I bought some like dresses here in the US as well as I use some sample sale.
00:17:35
Speaker
you know, like I go through all those things. Yeah. Okay, let's talk about client experience from when they inquire to like how many hours a shoot is what they can expect from you and just like this whole like how summary experience what is it like to book it with you?
00:17:56
Speaker
Pardon this short interruption, but me and the Get A Heck As team have some exciting news. 00:18:53
Speaker
First things first, when I really want, the reason I actually started the House of Marais is kind of like, because currently I have my wedding photography business as a choice choice photography. And then a lot of couple who I really wanted to give my second shooter my associates to be working as a main shooter so that they can live a, you know, profitable life than the, you know, just being on the
00:19:22
Speaker
being just working with me, working as a paycheck to paycheck. I didn't want that to happen to my, you know, coworkers. So I wanted to give them a solid foundation who can, you know,
00:19:35
Speaker
pay for their living, pay for their expenses. So that's another reason that I started my studio as well, so that I can give them, instead of representing me, representing the studio. So that's why I changed my name and then changed building a different brand.
00:19:58
Speaker
That's why there are some tiers on the website that associate shooting only, two associates, and the director plus associate director is definitely me. Of course. That's how I wanted to achieve it. Then they can have some better living out of being an artist. I don't believe in terms of the hungry artist.
00:20:25
Speaker
Yeah, because of the AI, I feel like artists should be paid more because we do different stuff than the AI. Yeah. That's how I feel. Yeah. Oh, I love that. That's so nice of you, Joyce. You're such a nice boss. I want it to be. I want it to be. I really want it to be. Yeah. Yeah.
00:20:45
Speaker
Oh my God. Okay. So yeah, I told you before that this is going to be like Tiffin tricks on how to start the studio, but like, I guess go, go deeper into your why of like why the studio is just so special to you and like where you see yourself taking it. It's all inclusive. Definitely. And also, um, if you don't know how to be in front of the camera, I can definitely direct the client. Yeah, I definitely direct the client.
00:21:15
Speaker
Definitely, we have the client giving the best client experience. We're trying to give them a coffee, water, everything, except for eating. And also, they don't have to be
00:21:35
Speaker
have anxiety in front of the camera. They will look beautiful no matter what. And after that, one more thing would be I give them
00:21:46
Speaker
chance to select a special editing for like, it's from 20 to 40, I believe. Yeah, I don't I don't really remember all of my package list. But 20 to 40, they can select their photos. And then I'll do extra Photoshop. So make it make it look them a little bit more nicer version of them, you know, definitely like filter. Yeah, filter of it. So they have like, if they have a
00:22:15
Speaker
feel like they want it to be more like, more cleaner, you know, arms. And, you know, like if they have a switch, and I can definitely remove it make it make them a better self, better looking themself. So that's, that's a really good answer. Yeah, that's, yeah, that's another highlight of my, yeah, what I provide, I guess.
00:22:40
Speaker
What are what are all the benefits of booking like a bridal shoot in the studio opposed to like a outdoor engagement session?
00:22:52
Speaker
Definitely, as I mentioned, the weather. We cannot expect. And then another thing is they don't have to worry about their outfits, because I do have all the outfits that they can have.

Benefits of Studio Shoots

00:23:07
Speaker
And another thing is they don't have to travel far away to California, I mean, the Korea or the China.
00:23:13
Speaker
Yeah, a lot of Asian bride, they are looking for Asian style pre-wedding sessions. But I believe there are a few, you know, Asian studio who does that, but yeah, I can be one of them. That's another thing. Yeah. And then what else? I guess. And then they can expect to up to date Korean style, from makeup to, yeah, like even outfits for the dresses. So.
00:23:42
Speaker
And also I think it's so unique. Like a lot of people don't have these type of photos and also the prints that you provide are extremely high-end. So it is for the high-end market that you try to get, that's your client. So so many different benefits and also that
00:24:05
Speaker
It is very comfortable in your environment. It's extremely Zen, you have the music playing. Yeah, it is. Like you said, like the muted palette. And it just feels like very like calming, but also like you just want to play. Like it's like, it's like dress up time. It's like you get to be like, you get to be Cinderella for the day and you get really good care of
00:24:29
Speaker
your clients and I was able to be, you know, trying to dress and be one of your clients and you maybe feel very comfortable. It was really fun to play dress up. So, amazing.

Future Aspirations and Personal Insights

00:24:41
Speaker
Where do you see, if you had a magic wand, this is a coachy question, but where would you see your business in three months, 90 days? Oh, wow. In three months, 90 days. Okay, so far, right now, a lot of clients
00:24:56
Speaker
who wants to do the just as CD Hall weddings. They are the ones who wants to have a photo shoot with me. A lot of couple who wants to have a better photo, but they definitely they don't want to spend so much money on the weddings. They just want to have a CD Hall wedding, just done it, but definitely have a better photo. They're the people who is willing to come. Yeah, it's not definitely like a lot of
00:25:24
Speaker
definitely higher high end clientele. So a lot of people who are planning that they're coming to me and also at the same time who likes my works, they're coming to me as well. Then another thing would be within 90 days for the House of Marie, I think I wish my associate to have more chances to shooting as a main shooter.
00:25:52
Speaker
That's definitely another thing. And then another step would be, I wish I can at least have about 20 clients for a month. That's my goal for 20 clients per month. Yeah, that's my goal for my associates and stuff. Wow, you're really revolutionizing wedding photography. So amazing. So I'm just going to ask you some fun, rapid-fire questions.
00:26:20
Speaker
What is something that we don't know about you? Anything. Okay, I think I shared a lot because I don't, I don't say myself as I never, you know, like experienced, you know, like, I graduated, I have a degree in computer science, I never say that out loud, because I feel like that's none of the artistic part, you know, like, I feel like that's kind of like, that's how I felt. So
00:26:49
Speaker
helpful for my work, but that was kind of sacred. What else? Oh, I'm a PK. Yeah, I don't say that too. I don't say that all out loud that much. Yeah. Yeah, I totally say it all out as a Christian. But yeah, I'm a PK. So I don't really get
00:27:15
Speaker
you know, like get scared out of the pastors talking with them. So like, they're my father's friends at that point. So I always go preach them and then tell them very comfortably, not so little like kind of strength of me whenever I go to like a church weddings and that I know how exactly going on for the church weddings. So I can definitely give them a better, you know, like guidance for the church wedding. Yeah.
00:27:43
Speaker
Oh, I love that. What do you like to do for fun with you and your husband? Me and my husband, we just go out and eat.
00:27:54
Speaker
that's good to think we're kind of low not the outgoing style so we don't go out for hiking my husband always wants to go out for hiking but I'm like oh you know what I always go on hiking for the engagement session you know we go out for the mountainside so yeah I don't I don't really want to go die yeah I just I just lay in the bath that's good
00:28:20
Speaker
I lay in the bed too. That's like my, am I relaxing? That's my relaxing point. And then sometimes here and there we go, um, you go, um, like we go for the staycation. Just go out, just be calm. You know, we always being in the high stress point industry, you know, like we have to be on time. We have to be, you know, kind of moving fast, going, make it time efficient.
00:28:48
Speaker
on the wedding day, making sure everything works and then every making sure every detail has to be done for as a shooter. So I just like to do something relaxing and then something just laying down on the bed, have a glass of wine. That's my thing. Yeah. Oh, that's amazing. And then why did you hire me? What were you struggling with? And then what did you what was the biggest takeaway after coaching with me?
00:29:17
Speaker
First things first, I didn't know I had to do my consultation. At first, when you send out a freebie of the video that you sent me, it was the initial consultation with your clients. That was really helpful.
00:29:42
Speaker
And then after that, yeah, when I saw it, oh, I should do this. I didn't know I have to do this kind of stuff. It was kind of new to me and that, you know, like you did all the Canva stuff without like kind of showing the how you work and stuff.

Impact of Coaching and Social Media Advice

00:30:01
Speaker
I was like, that was mind blowing to me because it's like, yeah, because they
00:30:09
Speaker
At first, I never knew that when I send my pricing right after they inquire me.
00:30:16
Speaker
was like giving them a, let them just decide not based on my work, based on the price. That's how I've learned from you. So I'm like, oh, I should do this. And then why I am standing out of the other stuffers and also what I think about whenever I photographing their weddings and what's my philosophy basically for their
00:30:44
Speaker
in terms of shooting their weddings so that was very mind-blowing process and then that's why I decided to working with you get coached by you and then yeah and then you were giving me a lot of things giving me
00:31:01
Speaker
I have to do a lot of stuff. You've been telling me to, you have to post more, you know, multicultural couples, don't post, you know, like, just the Korean couples, I'm like, yeah, I know, but I don't have much. And then, other than that, maybe after that, you've been giving me a lot of examples of sending out the, the meal chimps, you know, like the
00:31:32
Speaker
send out what's called the...
00:31:34

And where can everyone find you? You can tell everyone both at your fees, Joyce, Toya, and House and Marie.
