Introduction to the Verandian Jungle

00:00:00
Speaker
Do you think he saw us?
00:00:23
Speaker
Hello everyone and welcome to tonight's episode of the Fellowship of the Tabletop. We are a live play 5e podcast set in the disputed lands of the Verandian jungle in the magical homebrood world of Eryth. My name is Darren and I'm going to run some D&D for you

Character Introductions

00:00:38
Speaker
all. These are the Shadow Men Tales. With me tonight we have playing the Dragonborn Rogue Siongar, Mark. You know when you say this evening, what if I watch it in the morning? Hi. I didn't say evening today did I?
00:00:52
Speaker
twice you said tonight, but it's fine. I love you. Keep going man. Thanks man. Playing the bugbear druid Chungus Bongwater is our one-shot extraordinaire, Wilbot. Leather girl. Playing the dragonborn paladin Drago, we have Ian. What up? And playing the human ranger McBennar, we have Will. T-Rex? You have a T-Rex?

Recap of Previous Episode

00:01:16
Speaker
Okay, and to figure out what happened on last week's episode of the Fellowship of the Tabletop, let's go to some epic voiceover. Previously on the Fellowship of the Tabletop, the UNT sprung their cleverly constructed trap.
00:01:35
Speaker
and the party entered combat. Drago sank four feet into the sand and reached out for Chungus to save him. Chungus became stars because that's a thing apparently. Chungus pulled Drago out of this quicksand and thus our fight truly began. Saingar and McBenna struck a UNT dealing it deadly amounts of force but still it survived for now.
00:02:05
Speaker
The fight continued. Ren became quite a good assistant and support character at this point and aided in hastened Macbennar. Meanwhile, something out of WWE out of nowhere. Sayangar and Drago decided to tag team up and use their combined breath weapon to shatter a UNT scimitar wielder into icy nothingness.
00:02:30
Speaker
The UNT began to flee. McBenna struck one down. The second one was trapped by tangling vines by Chungus, shot where it was. And then suddenly... Boom. Boom.

Encounter with the T-Rex

00:02:45
Speaker
A T-Rex emerged. Let's hope Darren clocked this one's speed at 32 miles an hour.
00:02:53
Speaker
OK, that's one of my favourite voiceovers yet. Thank you very much. Once is always. You still haven't used it yet, but consider your inspiration renewed. Yeah, boy. I thought I'd get that address in part reference in there. It's a good one. I enjoyed it. And what you will now see is this creature just seems to guzzle down its gullet, the remains of the remaining one, T.
00:03:22
Speaker
then just seems to stop and glance around. It's not immediately clear whether it's seen you or not. As starts to, without any particular speed or haste or giving any inclination that it's seen you starts to move in your direction. What do you want to do? Does it get triggered by the entangledness?
00:03:52
Speaker
It's only when it starts, when I cast the spell in there, but it is... Yeah, it's difficult terrain for it, so it's working its way through it, but... Okay, that's fine. I wasn't sure. Thanks. Working its way through it, but it's slowing it down. It's not stopping it. It's with the meta information of what the strength save was. It may entangle you on T. It's not going to hold up a T-Rex for too long. McBano will look at the T-Rex.
00:04:21
Speaker
And this is, this is probably one of the biggest things you've seen. I think we all need to get to the trees right now. Do you think he saw us? Stangus sliggers to himself quietly.
00:04:50
Speaker
I think it's important to note that my starry form is a light show so I think the moment it kind of eats it and and Macbeth says that you're gonna hear the kind of squeakiest of farts as the starry form just dissipates and we're back to regular chungus
00:05:17
Speaker
It's also worth noting that momentarily once you say that, Macbenna, you feel the wave of fatigue come over you again. For the next six seconds, feel the dissipation of haste. Ren is now moved quietly into the middle of the group and it's with those of you who are, I'm going to say for expediency, you're all now gathered within the clearing.
00:05:46
Speaker
This T-Rex continues to move towards you. It's going to make a perception check. No sign of it giving you any particular interest at the minute. What are you all doing? It's now about 40 feet from you. As a bonus action, I wish to transfer my Hunter's Mark to it just in case. Right.
00:06:13
Speaker
Are we getting out of here or are we about to try and kill that?
00:06:19
Speaker
I really want to kill it. I really want to engage that thing so badly. I want to square up to it Dragonborn versus Dinosaur. I just want to go at it. But this isn't the Drago from season one and it's just going to be disappointing to everyone.
00:06:45
Speaker
Every, every part of me wants to go full speed ahead. But that's very much an Ian slash old Jago Monteith. But I'm just saying, like, if someone were to push, I'm there. WWDD, what would Drago do?
00:07:07
Speaker
Oh, damn it. But better is going to slowly start backing. Oh, sorry, Mark, go on. I was just going to say, saying I would turn to you and go, I would like really moving to kind of speak out the side of his snout to everyone and go, I've done this one before. What's going to happen? I'm going to shoot it and run in that direction. And he nods to the left. You guys all run in that direction. And he nods to the right.
00:07:35
Speaker
Give me half a day and I'll catch up with you. No, wait, off. I can do something really quickly and if it doesn't work, that might be a backup plan. Okay, just, it's getting closer. Hurry up, John. Can't we just throw a rock in a different direction? Again, good backup plan. Macbeth is going to pick up a rock from the floor if you can find one. It's on the edge of the clearing. There's T-Rex now. It's about 20 feet from you all. Okay, I will...
00:08:04
Speaker
Oh, fuck it! I'm gonna get myself into the clearing, make myself kind of a target with kind of hands raised. I'm gonna cast Animal Friendship.
00:08:16
Speaker
I'm going to cast Field of the Faith. I'm going to take the probably one appreciated AC boost. What the hell happens with that? What the hell happens with Animal Project? Basically it's a spell that just the reading of the spell it says I try and convince a beast that I mean it no harm. It needs to be able to see and hear me but this is the big thing if its intelligence is for or higher the spell fails.
00:08:43
Speaker
otherwise it needs a wisdom saving throw. That's what it says. It's intelligence. Oh, thank fuck for that. Okay, so it needs a wisdom saving throw. Are you taking the Tyrannosaurus rex and making it into a Barney? No, I just don't want to do it. Yes, it fails. So for the next 24 hours, basically, it knows that
00:09:11
Speaker
I mean it, no harm, basically, and won't perceive me as a threat. It's effectively charmed, but it does say if one of my companions harms the target, the spell will end. Partly wants to quote Loki in saying it means no harm to a boot, but it's not going to stop.
00:09:34
Speaker
Okay, what happens is the T-Rex, it seems to come down, it brings its face level with you, Chungus, and it just seems to take a sniff at you before taking another one. It then exhales through its nose, this quite disgusting breath, before looking up, letting out a roar, and then moving over to where the quicksand is, and it immediately drops its head in, yanks out,
00:10:05
Speaker
the pure blood that was within, and you see this thing get consumed as well alongside that. It is literally just going along and picking up your kills. It then moves over to the frozen yuan-ti, nods it, and realizes that hasn't quite defrosted yet, and starts to move away from that one, heading in the direction of the one that's been a kill. It seems to now be moving away from you all.
00:10:33
Speaker
Okay. Can I just do something as well? Really stupid. I'll just say to the guys that get around me, I'm just going to quickly try something bear with. And I'm going to keep animals as well. So basically we can communicate and I'm going to, as I'm kind of, uh,
00:10:58
Speaker
speaking with it. Let me just quickly double check something. I need to just double check that there's no concentration involved in either of these two. It's no, there's no concentration on either of these. Okay. Awesome. Yeah. And I'll just, I'll speak to it. Um, and I'll say, Hey there big guy. Um, looks like you quite like eating snakes. Uh, yeah, they're really tasty. Um, you know, I think we might be able to, um, if you're hungry, I know where there might be a few more snakes.
00:11:28
Speaker
turns back. It doesn't say anything, but it appears to be listening to what it is you have to say. Cool. And I'll say in the common tongue to people around me, I'm going to try and get this guy to see if he can give us a hint.

Shelter from the Storm

00:11:51
Speaker
And probably whilst he's speaking, more squeaky farts are probably exiting Jungus at this point. And I'm going to cast guidance on myself, which is concentration. And just to counter it and just say, so we can get you some free food. If you just follow us through this clearing, if you kind of head here with us, we'll get you all the food that you could want. All you can eat, snake buffet.
00:12:23
Speaker
Make a persuasion check. This is why I need that guidance because my persuasion is shite. Please work. Okay. I need to roll a d4 on top of that. Please be a good roll for the d4. It's a four. That's 17. Yeah, buddy. Come on. It looks back at you.
00:12:53
Speaker
contemplates what you've said, perceives that you and the people who are with you are no threat, and then turns and just starts to make its way back over to the final fall on U1T. It makes its way over to that U1T and starts to gorge itself on it.
00:13:23
Speaker
Once that is done, it decides that it is no longer hungry or interested in what you do. Oh no! I'm going to shoot it. I'm going to make its way in there. Fuck! You want to shoot it? No, no, no.
00:13:46
Speaker
I'll call out to it and say if you change your mind we we're gonna head in this direction so uh feel free to join us please tell me you didn't just tell it where we were going oh uh i'm pretty sure that the spell um kind of stuck with that one so we've got about
00:14:10
Speaker
24 hours is roughly how long it takes. I mean, that's what is taken with the other ones. I'm not sure if it works on the things of that size, but I mean, yeah, if I fingers crossed, if he gets a bit hungry, he might turn up and give us a hand. That was impressive. Very impressive. That was certainly something to tell other people when we see them. Thanks for the old save back there.
00:14:36
Speaker
Oh yeah, not a problem. I've never done that before and to be honest, I thought I was going to be eaten, but... I've never seen anyone turn into the stars and moons before. Oh yeah, me neither. As you say that, you've noticed that it's got quite dark overhead and there's the first faint patters of rain.
00:14:58
Speaker
This storm that you prophesied and were able to see in your Druid class at the end, at the start of the last episode, Chungus, appears to be forming. It becomes immediately clear as the rain starts to pick up that for a restful evening,
00:15:23
Speaker
that you are all going to have to find some meaningful sheltered rest point for tonight. Trying to make camping this in the open won't work and will result in a night that could potentially trigger exhaustion. So as the rain starts to fall, it becomes clear that this storm in itself is going to be
00:15:47
Speaker
quite something and quite potentially dangerous as these forks of lightning start to flash out across the sky and the cloud goes dark as the afternoon sun seems to disappear. You probably have about two more hours of daylight. What do you want to do? We need to get into some cover now. How long have we got?
00:16:18
Speaker
I'm going to look to Chungus. OK. And before you answer, Chungus, I think the best way to run this is for this to trigger a survival challenge, please, which we're going to do through a skill check. We haven't done one of these on a fellowship for a while. So we're going to do a skill check for this. I think the best... Can I ask everyone to roll initiative to discover their order in the skill check, please? Ren is...
00:16:47
Speaker
going to provide assistance at certain points, depending on when and where you can ask based on her skill set for it. So Rem will have the means, depending on what you're asking for, to grant people advantage. That's how Rem's role is going to play in this. Can I get a 20 plus, please? Okay, 15 to 20. I got an 18. Okay, better.
00:17:15
Speaker
Can I get a 10 to 15? I got 13. Thank you, Drago. Chungus the T-Rex charm, I got 12. Okay, Chungus. And this is me, I'm on eight, sign goes on eight. Okay, great, thank you. I'm going to start with a perception check. What you are going to need is
00:17:38
Speaker
It's going to be, as there are four of you, it's going to be a first to five, okay? It's going to be five passes or five fails, whatever comes first. And we're going to begin with Chungus.
00:17:54
Speaker
influencing the DC. This one isn't going to be a pass or fail, but it's going to influence the DC. And as you've heard, how long do we have? Can I ask you to just glance around at the skies, Chungus, and make a perception check, please? Or a nature check? That would be nature. OK, it's for nature would be a 14.
00:18:16
Speaker
OK, right, thank you. That has influenced the DC. You glance around and you ascertain before this storm properly kicks in, you've probably got somewhere between 20 and 40 minutes. It's going to get quite heavy quickly, but it's going to, as the darkness of these clouds roll even closer, it's going to get worse before it gets better.
00:18:39
Speaker
Okay, top of the round then. McBenna, it's over to you with this information in mind. What are you going to do at the top of the round? You will start to make your way into the jungle looking for a refuge. Given that we've been travelling for a bit, I'd like to use my
00:19:02
Speaker
outline the background for my memory of maps and geography to try and recall if on our route I saw anywhere nearby that would give us the cover we need or whether we need to go deeper into the forest where we haven't been yet. Okay, do you want to give me a history check then? Yeah.
00:19:28
Speaker
I'm not very good at history, but it's just part of my background traits. Let's give it a roll and see what happens. It's not too bad. That's a 16. I can always recall the general information. Okay, yep. That's definitely enough for a pass then. You recall
00:19:52
Speaker
that something that you passed very early on in the morning, that perhaps you didn't pay too much heed to at the time, was it appeared to be that you found somewhere near the riverbank back down the way you came, and importantly, outside of Uantee territory, you saw what appeared to be some form of outpost hut based high up in the tree, what appeared to be a form of abandoned tree house that would strike you as somewhere that you could go that would definitely allow you to see through the storm.
00:20:21
Speaker
Okay. I remember on the way near the riverbank, there was some kind of outpost in a tree that could give a shelter. It does mean going back the way we came. What do we all think? I'm never a fan of going back the way we came when we're trying to track someone. Well, I've just thought I'd put it out there. I'm happy for us to go, whatever others think.
00:20:52
Speaker
It's just a storm, right? I mean, surely we just keep going forwards. It could get bad. And given this storm, we're going to need cover. Yeah, it's going to get bad. Syengar, you know these woods and you, Chungus, is there anything towards the direction we're heading which would aid us in terms of shelter? I don't know about Syengar, but I've not been further in, but I can tell you that
00:21:18
Speaker
storm, it is a passing storm. It is going to get pretty bad, but by this tonight, it should have passed if my magic is correct. I'll agree with Jungus there. The storms in the jungle get pretty voracious. We don't want to be caught out in the middle of nowhere. Darren, are we in? Sorry, are we running these skills in initiative order?
00:21:42
Speaker
You will be, but I'm allowing you to pause for a moment if you decide on whether you want to follow McBennar's suggestion or not. McBennar, you said yourself is to be determined. McBennar asked for a history check to see if there was somewhere that he could recall. That's what he managed to ascertain. McBennar, you said yourself you wanted to keep up with
00:22:07
Speaker
whatever your cat fucker guy is, I think if we go back on ourselves, we run the risk of losing his track, especially in the storm that approaches. I just thought I'd pull it out there. In that case, I'd say we keep going deeper then. I think it's best if you want to make sure our quest is not a folly, we need to make sure we press on and keep up with our target, with our foe. Okay. Good name drop. Okay, thank you.
00:22:36
Speaker
As you continue to move into the jungle it becomes apparent that again that you are starting to encounter thick terrain where it's actually quite difficult to navigate your way through. As the rain starts to come it seems to make these vines in some instances even more difficult.
00:22:52
Speaker
almost sticky in places to make your way through. As you continue to make your way forward, the rain starts to fall heavily. McBenna's pass has been negated by you not following it, so we're still set on zero. Drago, you're moving your way through this quite thick terrain. What do you want to do in your place in the skill challenge? I'm going to do what I've done before and
00:23:18
Speaker
ping out a defined sense to make sure that there's no undead fiends, celestials, anything good or evil basically within 60 feet of us. Okay, yep, you're able to do that. And as you reach out to a Kiva, I'm going to ask you to also roll religion since this needs to be a skill challenge or I need to roll. Okay, because I'm rolling for it, do I still burn a defined sense slot?
00:23:47
Speaker
How would you like to play it? Well, the divine sense slot is just to let you know if you find those celestial themes are undead, right?
00:23:54
Speaker
No, I can only use this feature three times per rest, so I would argue if I'm having to roll to use this feature this time round, that do I need to burn one of my three slots or am I transferring that burn, excuse me for using the Callum thing here, into the religion roll. Sure, sure. Okay, yeah, it's DM's rule that you're transferring this into the religion roll as it's a skill challenge.
00:24:20
Speaker
I'll tell you what, I'll give you an incentive. If you want to burn one, you make the roll with advantage.
00:24:35
Speaker
13. Oh yeah okay you've just discovered the DC is that meets and beats so that's your first pass okay um good rolling good rolling um almost kind of like Gandalf uh when his nose starts to suggest you're moving in a specific direction that's the air is less foul so it's almost like a moment of inspiration you you find a path through the trees that you think would be the best course to follow is if Akiba is guiding you
00:25:05
Speaker
And I would start walking it. I would let everyone know. I would, yeah. I'll pee this as we do. Okay, if we're proceeding forwards as planned, give me a moment. I just need to talk to Akiva and see if I can find some safer... As the tracker looks towards the quicksand on the ground. Way through this place. And then he'll do the beacon and... Okay.
00:25:34
Speaker
I've got a bearing, it gets us closer to Karl or wherever we're going. What's it called? What do you mean? Dash Cal Ray. Dash Cal Ray. Gets us closer to Dash Cal Ray at least.
00:25:55
Speaker
Great. You will make your way off then, starting to follow this dragonborn who is trusting his nose, Alagandal, from the minds of Moria. That is your first pass since Macbens I was negated by you not going in the direction that he suggested. Chungus, it's your turn. These thick vines are now starting to, as you move off the beaten track, are still starting to surround you. The rain starts to fall, and for those of you without dark vision, you'll probably
00:26:24
Speaker
the best part of half an hour away from this becoming an issue and you needing to be able to have other means of guiding your way through. So for you, Cy and Guy, it would be a time to start thinking about getting out the mask and the hood. Chungus, it's your turn. What do you want to do? Chungus kind of following along with Drago. We'll kind of look at him, see him kind of playing about at the ambulance.
00:26:49
Speaker
looking up and he'll go, oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, the gods could guide you. Yes, of course. And I'm going to take it. Basically, I want to be looking out on the floor. I'm going to use the nature around me to be doing pretty much the same thing, but almost cross-referencing with Drago. I want to check, make sure we're not going to be walking into any natural hazards. Make sure I can't see any, like, dinosaur tracks, stuff like that. So basically just ensure the way that Drago is using is going to be safe for us.
00:27:19
Speaker
Thank you, nature check. Would you allow that to be under survival for the tracks and the hazards? I was just looking at what it said under the skills. I can do nature instead, of course. Sorry, I can do it as if you were actually studying your way to make sure that there was no kind of overgrowth or terrain that was going to hold you up. That's why I went for nature.
00:27:42
Speaker
Yeah, that's right. That's what I'd go for. Just looking at the end of the skill on survival, it mentions avoid quicksand or other natural hazards. I'm going to suggest that this is more about overgrowth and vegetation. It's nature, please. I'm with you. Yeah, no problem. It was a 19 overall.
00:28:02
Speaker
Okay, yeah, that's the second pass. Yeah, you're able to know out some kind of vines and quick weeds that are particularly adhesive. You're able to ensure the party doesn't get stuck to any of them. You're able to just position yourself at the front as this dragonborn that's moved with purpose is all of a sudden aware that the sun is starting to fade and that the leader point is going to have to pass elsewhere.
00:28:33
Speaker
Okay, thank you, Chungus. This is going rather well. Cyan Guy, it's your turn.
00:28:39
Speaker
I want to follow him along behind Drago and Chungus, kind of up until now, just kind of following along with what they're doing. He's going to attach the bug-like mask with the two long tubes. Dred's kind of hanging down on the other side of it. And just kind of catch in line. And then what he's going to be doing is just kind of looking out for those telltale signs. He's going to be using his DM permitted kind of Hermit Outlander background.
00:29:05
Speaker
and is going to be looking for those telltale signs of the smuggler caches or the hideouts that are often hidden deep in the verandian jungle to hide goods and wares that usually offer some kind of protection from the elements. So he's going to be looking out for those marks on the trees, the twig formations, the things that would be the telltale signs that he's been privy to knowing from his past.
00:29:31
Speaker
Yeah, looking for the themes. Okay, cool, terrific. That sounds like perception. Okey-dokey. And before you roll that, just a little bit of RP, because Ren hasn't done anything this turn. She's just going to say to you, what are you looking for? It's a three-pronged mark on a tree. You look left, I'll look right.
00:29:55
Speaker
Yeah, it's like a marker, right? We used to leave them in Neverwinter. And she seems quite excited about that. And yeah, she's going to start doing the same. She's going to start looking in the direction that you suggested. You can roll this with advantage as Ren is assisting you. Oh, fab. Thank you, Ren, you useless lady.
00:30:15
Speaker
Useless or useful? Useless. Wrong word. I wrote a 14 for my first one, then an 18 for my second. Thank you, Ren. Yeah, that's a third pass. We need two more. You're all ridiculously good at this. And yeah, you're able to find what you think, or you do eventually find after about 10, 20 minutes, so you re-come up with things to suggest.
00:30:38
Speaker
that there is another tree house outpost within the vicinity, maybe half an hour away, following in the direction that seems to be akin to whatever Drago was picking up on. I would just pass that information forward and kind of announce that anywhere around here, keep your eyes peeled, somewhere up high, look for this marker and kind of give the information that I've given to Ren as well to the rest of the party. OK, great. Thank you.
00:31:07
Speaker
That's Syengar done. McBenna. Yes. It's your turn. So McBenna will have heard what Syengar said and he's going to be looking around, looking for any sign of this hideaway that we can use. Okay, yep. I'm going to rule, but because perceptions already happen, that eventually, after 20, 30 minutes, you discover
00:31:35
Speaker
this high tree house. And you can see coming down from it, from this hut, well, it appears to be a rope ladder. It's about 30 feet off the ground. So it appears to be coiled up as if it's either been left in that way or someone had tied it off and flown it back out when last leaving it. It doesn't appear to be anyone here. It looks like it's been abandoned for some time. With that in mind, what do you want to do, MacBella?
00:32:06
Speaker
How climbable does the tree look? Okay, you can make an investigation. You can get close enough to the tree to make an investigation check. Part of me just wants to do it. By all means, you can make an athletics or acrobatics check to start scaling the tree, if you would rather.
00:32:27
Speaker
Yeah, I'm going to pull out my daggers and daggers in hand using them to help me because I'm not sure what my grip is going to be like. Try and climb the tree to try and get to the point where I can lower the rope down. Okay, it sounds like more athletics than acrobatics. Yes, yes, it does indeed.
00:32:47
Speaker
That's a 14. Yeah, that passes. You're able to scale this tree to the point where you can just reach out and whack this ladder. And as it's folded up on itself, like the way we used to fold up theater drapes, if you recall, this thing just starts to fall to the floor and is now accessible for everyone below.
00:33:12
Speaker
I'm going to say, even though I said it would be five passes, that you've reached the threshold with four there. Without any fails thrown in, probably eradicating the need for the fifth pass, you're able to find this treehouse and not a moment too soon as the rain starts to properly kick into high gear. As you enter this treehouse and you all pull yourself up the ladders, you find a series of hammocks
00:33:42
Speaker
And again, mercifully, you find what appears to be a flu flagons that seem to contain some form of rum that has been left here by whichever feeds long abandoned this treehouse as it fell into the territory of the Wante. There appear to be some like cobwebs in the corner of the room. There is also what appears to be a alcove or a almost like a cheapy top, which would allow you to light a fire if needs be. What do you want to do?
00:34:14
Speaker
Is there a fire already laid in the fireplace and kind of like a little like like a woodsman's trick where you when you leave the hideaway you leave a fire ready for the next person to use it kind of thing or is it? Yes yes this looks like that it has at one point been part of a like a smuggler's network that appears to be long abandoned.
00:34:35
Speaker
The wood's been sheltered, so there's nothing to say particularly that it's rotted, but it has been. So what I'm going to do with that information is about when it's going to go and have a look and at least get a fire started. And then, because I assume we are, because we've been travelling, it has been raining, we are actually quite damp. Yes, you are. Yes. Right. But Ben is going to look to the group and go,
00:34:58
Speaker
We might need some more wood to keep ourselves, get ourselves dry from this downpour. No, no, no, I got it. I got it. And Rem will just come forward and cast Create Bonfire on these fires and they'll immediately kindle into a fire and she'll just give you a nod. Okay, yeah, that about works. I guess we should...
00:35:26
Speaker
Yeah, well, that works. How long does that last for, Ren? Well, that's now just a fire. That will last until, well, someone puts it out. Rule for the duration is a minute.
00:35:44
Speaker
Yeah, it's a minute. If she creates bonfire, what she's actually done is just sparked some some flyer that was already there. And in the way that we never really questioned it when Tali did it. Yeah, that's okay. We're not going to question render. Yeah, but Tali, Tali, think about, right, think about Tali, guys. Tali had a special thing where we didn't think to read the rules back then. Yeah. Yeah. And well, and also, and also, fuck you. So that's why as well.
00:36:12
Speaker
Ren has the same thing. You'll be pleased to know. So, is this unlimited? So, DM, metagaming wise, can I assume this is an unlimited fire? I don't need to go find wood or do I need to go find wood to feed the fire? No, this fire, I mean... If you were being collegiate, you would find wood for whoever could find it next because you're using the wood that's been left there. If not being collegiate doesn't bother you, then yes, this fire will serve your purposes. Fair enough. Okay. Well, I'm not going out in the rain for now, so, you know. Cool. All right, then.
00:36:41
Speaker
Then MacBenna will lay your stuff down, start making sure everything starts to dry, taking off his leather jacket and hanging that up and making sure that things are going to dry and not start to rot or get damp and stay damp because you know that can be quite dangerous in the wild.
00:37:18
Speaker
This hasn't been used in quite a while, but that doesn't mean people won't be back soon.
00:37:22
Speaker
I don't know when, I don't know why, but they might. This is a smuggler's hold. So just, it's safe for now, but we can't stay here long. Once the storm has passed, we should move on. And he's going to turn, after telling that, and as he kind of drives off his cloak, turns to Drago and just quietly says, that indeed was something me and my brother would have done on the battlefield. That doesn't mean we're cool. I'm still not convinced. Mimic. And he's going to walk off into a corner somewhere.
00:37:53
Speaker
Drago will just smile a little to himself, thinking, eh, make him progression. Question, with the fire now in this smuggler's cove, what's the ambient temperature? The ambient temperature is now probably back up to somewhere with room temperature. What you do notice is that the heat in the way that a cold front has radically come across
00:38:21
Speaker
It's a reminder that the verandian is in the winter months and it immediately got colder to the point where actually the temperature was much more friendly to the dragonborns. But even you started to feel the chill for the rest of you, the fire is most welcome.

Reflecting by the Fire

00:38:43
Speaker
How close, like if I, we're in the trees, aren't we? So if I stand at the door,
00:38:52
Speaker
How high up are we? You perceive that you are probably, this lope ladder was hanging down 30 feet. And then another 30 feet on that. So you're about 60 feet up. So after that, Drago's going to turn from the door to the rest of the group. We should be safe here. Are we taking watches?
00:39:19
Speaker
How dark is it? Is it nighttime? Yeah, I mean, it's only about 6, 7 p.m. But the problem is in the winter months that as we're currently experiencing and in reality is effectively nighttime darkness. Okay, Drago is going to look around the room to where the ROM that was aforementioned was and we'll start handing it out. What's the ratio and cups to people? You find that there are
00:39:49
Speaker
three cups and of course there are five of you but with wine skins and pouches you would all have the means of being able to access this this flag and should you need to some of you can use the cups that are there or you can use your own pouches and wine skins. Okay Trago we'll go to each person and see if they want any rum pouring in their cups or give a cup if they need a cup.
00:40:15
Speaker
And, uh, and whomever decides to take it, uh, drug or with them, kind of stand near them, uh, near the whole group and just kind of, this will keep you warm. Well done today. McBenna will pull out a, um, fuck with mess kit, uh, a cup and that kind of stuff so we can, uh, drink from it. Ah, it was good. Did someone remember to pull up the rope ladder when we came in?
00:40:45
Speaker
nope that's all right i can do it i need to quickly take a step outside anyway uh no thank you to the rum i don't partake it makes the reading of the uh selen's children a little bit more difficult so fair enough yep and as you make your way out chungus you glance up firstly to the heavens and you can see that selen is quite hard to see this evening yeah
00:41:15
Speaker
I thought it would be thinking that later on, perhaps if always right this morning, the cloud should clear. But what I'd like to do is have a look around. Within 24 hours, right? So in theory, the crowds might not clear until the early hours of the morning. Very good point. Regardless, I want to have a little look around now that we're up in the trees and just see if I can spot
00:41:43
Speaker
any tiny beasts like bats or anything flying that looks like it might be nesting or anything at all. Yeah, do you want to make a perception check? Badly. Let's say 13. It's kind of hard by nightfall. They're nocturnal animals. You do, if you're really looking for it, know that
00:42:11
Speaker
if you put out like a little piece of light, like a guiding light or a light cantrip, that you would probably be able to attract some form of jungle moth, if that's something that would interest you. Probably not. No, just what he'll do is he'll kind of make a note that he can't spot anything yet.
00:42:31
Speaker
But I imagine later on in the night that's his intention is to not necessarily look up to the stars But he wants to try and find some some form of tiny flying beasts So he'll as the night progresses He'll kind of make his way back out at regular intervals just to to see if anything comes home to roost or anything like that Yeah, well, I mean what you could do you're specifically looking for a bug is is is
00:42:54
Speaker
Well, actually, yeah, you could perhaps leave a candle or something. But yeah, you know enough about the types of bugs that are in this jungle to know how to attract them, should you wish to do so. I'm looking for like a bat or a small bird, basically, like a small flying beast as opposed to an insect. In that case, yeah, you just have to go back out and see what you can spot. Yeah, I'll do so until I'm successful. OK, right, cool.
00:43:24
Speaker
The night draws on and continues as you all take in this rum. You take in the relaxing but yet relentless sound of the rainfall which is punctuated by loud crackles of thunder and flashes of lightning. Does anyone want to do or have any conversations or say anything as the night draws on before we get to the point of people setting down for a long rest and taking watch?
00:43:56
Speaker
No, nothing from Syengo. He just set Melancholic in the corner. McBenna will be partaking Rom alongside Drago and he'll look towards the Dragonborn that he's sort of got to know recently. That was an impressive thing you and your brother did. The Dragonbreath.
00:44:27
Speaker
Yeah, it's not the first time we've done it. Admittedly, it's been many years since I last done it. We used to work like a coherent team back in the days when it was just me and him and our father. We were protectors of our little keep.
00:44:55
Speaker
No, it was good. Natural, almost. It looked fierce, and may I say you looked comfortable doing it, if you get my meaning. I do.
00:45:12
Speaker
Appreciate it. Hopefully. Good shooting. Good shooting on your side, Pop. I know. I know. And I have dealt with some great archers. They would like to have a conversation with you. The thing about getting old, Drago, is that there's always a younger man or woman who is going to eventually be able to outshoot you.
00:45:39
Speaker
Because once your eyes go, once your hands go, that's it. So as long as I can be the best I can be for as long as I can. I'm happy. They're sensing that. I've got no I'm under no illusion that one day I'm going to meet someone who's better than me. And they'll probably kill me if it comes down to that.
00:46:07
Speaker
Well, my father always believed there is great honor in dying in battle. I've known people die in fights and I've known them go quick and I've known them go slow. I don't know which way. I know I'd like to go quick if it happens, but also
00:46:38
Speaker
I quite like to think if I can live to be old and just go in my sleep, that'd be nice as well. God's be willing, that will happen for you. Ah, that'll be nice. Draggo will raise up his flagging. God's be willing and, hopefully, hopefully either you or someone like you
00:47:07
Speaker
is willing to send me on to wherever I'm destined to go. I've not kept God's much. I've paid service when it's been necessary, but I've never sort of been a follower beyond what I can see and touch.
00:47:31
Speaker
You know, if a God's watching or looking, then, you know, they must have not a lot to do if they just want to, you know, watch and look at someone like me. Drago will kind of give you a glance with a raised eyebrow at that last comment.
00:47:51
Speaker
I used to believe in the same things. The physical world was all that was here. Anything that I couldn't see or touch, I didn't believe in. And that changed once I made my way to Eryth and things started to unravel as me and my friends journeyed on. And I come to find that faith, religion, gods,
00:48:20
Speaker
nature, all the things that are part of life that we don't even know about, just because we can't see them, doesn't mean that they aren't there, instructing their will and changing us.
00:48:41
Speaker
What it does mean, though, is the power of decision is still yours, regardless of anything or anyone that might be out there. That's a nice way of thinking about it. I've known religious folk and when they tell you you're not a believer, they start to rant and rave and sort of, you know, trying to convert you. But you are a different drago and as you've said, you've come from it from
00:49:12
Speaker
from where I am. I'd like to hope that somewhere beyond this life there's something else. Well, I learned everything I did through a very dear friend of mine who, in his own ways, showed me the path to Akiva. So I owe him thanks for that. But if
00:49:42
Speaker
If a religious touch is what you desire for when you pass on, it would be an honour to help you on your journey and to ensure that you find a place of rest in the afterlife. McBenna will take a moment in sort of holding his rum-filled cup
00:50:11
Speaker
and he'll look down at it and the way the fire light sort of flickers across the surface and almost creates a mirror so we can look into it. That means a lot, Drago. It does. I've lived a life and there are parts of it that I'm not proud of.
00:50:38
Speaker
And I thought that perhaps at the age I was, I was beyond meeting folk who were prepared to do goodbye for now. So that means a lot to think that you, you know, we've only known each other for less than a month and yet you're prepared to
00:51:07
Speaker
do a sort of thing for sort of the likes of me. It does mean a lot. That's nice, thank you. He sort of looks back at his cup, so he's sort of stumbling over the words, not quite knowing how to really express himself. Do I go nods in understanding?
00:51:33
Speaker
Like I said, I'm passing this on, paying it forwards. What was done to me, I shall do to you. Well, let's hope that in a few months time,
00:51:51
Speaker
We'll be laughing about this in a pub somewhere called... Do you remember that time we were talking about death? Death, yeah. And meanwhile, the skull of Karl will be on a table near us and we'll be able to think back to this.
00:52:12
Speaker
Listen, I don't mean that when you die imminently, I will send you on your passing. This was more of a promise that whenever your time is, I'll be there to help you on your way, even if it might take me some time to get to your location. Do you not? Well, arrange it so that you can, well, somehow I'll find out. Well, thank you. That means a lot. I know you're not from
00:52:41
Speaker
here and I know you. No, but something keeps bringing me back. Well, whoever it is. I'm still not entirely sure it wasn't you this time. As Dragoo talks up toward the sky again. Well, if whoever it was, Dragoo, I'm pleased they did it. Because without you, there'd be quite a few of us here, myself, Ren. You perhaps wouldn't have gotten this far.
00:53:11
Speaker
So thank you. It is an honor. McBenna, Ren says, looking up at you from the fire. Iris. You sound like him. Oh. She glances at Drago and smiles and says, the better archer.
00:53:40
Speaker
I wasn't picking sides. Oh, I know, I know. I just can't help but feel that, well, all of us who were brought here at Benner, we sometimes perhaps need those who can guide us through these lands and we need someone who can help us understand the world we're in.
00:54:10
Speaker
I'm glad that you were in that ghost city with us. Yeah, I want to say thanks to you and to you. Oh, shit. Yeah, thanks. No, I was there. I didn't know it was a two way thing. Sorry. I was there. No, no, no, no. I wasn't trying to do that to shame you. My apologies. I'm still learning. Thank you as well. MacBenna. If that wasn't clear. I was there for money. Drago.
00:54:39
Speaker
I won't lie. When I took that job, I was in a place of me, myself and I. I went into that job thinking it was me, myself and I. Then you turned up and then what happened happened and I suddenly realized that actually, though I'd left a life behind to think about me,
00:55:09
Speaker
I realised that there's a part of me that still wants to do what is right and to do what I swore to do when I was one of the Rainier. So you've put me back on a path that I thought I'd walked off in your own way. You might not have even known it, but you've helped me. You helped yourself just by being open to it.
00:55:40
Speaker
Do you know something? I think everyone who came here from the Sword Coast was brought here for a reason. And her eyes quickly glanced over to Syengar, brooding in the corner. All of us. And as you contemplate those words and return to your drinks, we're going to
00:56:06
Speaker
return to the image of you Chungus out on this balcony looking to commune with nature.

Chungus Sends a Message

00:56:15
Speaker
Eventually you do find in the death of the night a bat, a series of bats seem to flicker around the hut attracted perhaps by the embers of the fire as the chance for a long rest comes on. Is there anything you want to do before we get to that point as these creatures appear?
00:56:35
Speaker
Yes, certainly. Jungles will kind of look to the group of bats and whilst he's casting a spell, specifically animal messenger, and he'll do it using a spell slot other than ritual, he'll call out to the bats and say, excuse me, is anyone willing to give me a favour perhaps? I'm hoping that one will come over that I can kind of channel this spell into.
00:57:05
Speaker
back comes over. So I've got some family that I could do with a message being sent to. One's a small green goblin. He's kind of wearing simple clothes and he's got a staff with him and the other's a tall hobgoblin, red skin. He's got a kind of tribal paint on him. He's wearing a blue tunic and like a belt made of wings and all sorts of creepy stuff. They travel together so it's just the two of them.
00:57:34
Speaker
And if you could pass on the following message, I'd be incredibly grateful. I need you to head towards Desh Khelre and I'll point in what I perceive to be the general direction of the city. Following the river upstream, south. Yeah, and I'll relay that as well. And you've just got to follow the river. I know they'll be. And I basically get to choose 25 words to pass into this creature, which it can
00:58:02
Speaker
spend the next 24 hours flying in that direction basically until it kind of spots what I've described, hopefully to relay a message to him. Yeah, the creature sits there. Excellent. And I'll just kind of nod to the creature and just say, hey, little brother, and with the burrow, I hope your journey's been successful.
00:58:32
Speaker
But hey, I charmed a T-Rex. See you in Desh, kill Ray soon. Let me see your little brother. And I'll kind of send the creature on its way. Okay, thank you. Yeah, you watch as the bat takes off into the night and you glance back over your shoulder.
00:59:02
Speaker
at the two siblings, seemingly estranged, sat away from the campfire. And as you watch the bat disappear into the darkness, you're grateful, grateful for the bond that you have with your own family and grateful for everything you've experienced today. And as you contemplate all this and more, as this bat's wings spread into the darkness of the jungle,
00:59:31
Speaker
That is where we're going to end this week's episode of The Fellowship of the Tabletop. Oh, nice. Wow, that was a bit beautiful, wasn't it? Aww, big hugs all around. All got a bit emotional. That did. In a beautiful but manly way. Yeah. Well, it's good to talk about your feelings. Get them out. The feelings, that is. We didn't get T-Rex food. Didn't get eaten.
01:00:02
Speaker
That was epic. It was all around good stuff, some wholesome stuff and a dinosaur thrown into the mix. You get it all here from dinosaurs to wholesome family fun. Who wouldn't want to listen to this? In fact, if you don't know who isn't listening to this, please pass this.
