Introductions and Initial Thoughts

Hi there guys. I'm Stuffy Stuff and this is Bobby and we are day three on the Inca Trail. That's right. Where are we at right now Bobby? We, I have no idea actually. I'm going to show you for a second. We could even walk this way. Let's go for a walk. Come on, why not? Yeah, take me on tour. You've been here for a while. So Bobby, what did you learn today on the trail? What I learned is
00:00:30
Speaker
Being patient is critical. You can really hurt yourself if you're not patient. I learned that I should have trained more. Okay, what would you do differently?

Physical Preparation for the Trail

00:00:41
Speaker
Or what would you tell someone who is 50 who wants to do this? Commit to the trip earlier. You know, we had about a one-month runway on this deal. Okay. And that wasn't enough. Okay. I would say build into your life.
00:00:58
Speaker
appropriate exercise kind of daily okay i think i've talked about it before i did
00:01:06
Speaker
kind of 15 minutes a day, but I wasn't pushing myself. And I had to kind of ramp it up in the last four weeks. And that was a little bit, a little bit rough and kind of hurt my ankle a little bit. Yeah, you're kind of having a lot. So you would tell someone who is a similar age, who wants to do this to any specific exercises that would help them. So I

The Physical Challenge of the Trail

00:01:31
Speaker
would. Yeah. You got to do stairs. Yeah. And you got to go up.
00:01:35
Speaker
Going up cardiovascular wise is brutal. We're not going to curse because it's a we're not explicit, whatever that setting is. We're not that. But it's brutal. I've loved it.
00:02:00
Speaker
I would encourage people to do it, but you're at altitude. The steps are crazy in number. My feet are size 14.
00:02:16
Speaker
The Incas developed as a shorter people to do high altitude stuff. Yeah. They didn't have size 14 feet. And so going down stairs. Is that a free wreck? You have to have it. You got to be sure. It's brutal. It really is. I'm going to show you guys for a second the stairwell. So this is not Machu Picchu. No, it's not. This is one of the other Inca archaeological sites.
00:02:46
Speaker
Zoom down to show that. That's our campsite way off yonder with the different colors there. Look at the water. The water there is kind of a hydroelectric. I like what we're talking about and for you know for me when I think about how I would train differently if I was going to do this again
00:03:10
Speaker
I'm going to sit down. Yeah, please go for it. You know, a hockey train just got done. Yeah, you circle back to come get me a hockey train. I think I have to give it up to hockey.
00:03:23
Speaker
because if I like running doesn't prepare you for this maybe cardiovascularly wise but for me it was it was totally hockey it's the squatting in hockey it's the short shifts high kind of interval training that really helped out my muscles do not hurt me
00:03:40
Speaker
My quads don't really hurt, my calves don't hurt, my ankle's a little janky. I got a blister on one of my feet. It doesn't even bother just because there's so many other things to be concerned about. But cardiovascular fitness wise and altitude, yikes.
00:04:01
Speaker
What would you do differently?

Fitness Backgrounds and Wellness

00:04:03
Speaker
Anything? You're coming into this pretty well prepared. But also my background is cardiovascular fitness. And you've done a good job. You were a college athlete, college runner. You've done a good job at maintaining fitness.
00:04:18
Speaker
We talk a lot about wellness, the physical component of wellness when you work the camp. Sorry, there's bugs biting. Watch. When you scratch bug bites, you turn the camera, they think there's like an earthquake. We are on two fault lines here, by the way. Producer Bob. Yeah, Producer Bob. But you've done a good job. I didn't.
00:04:41
Speaker
Well, I don't think so. So you're not giving yourself enough credit, too. Oh, I'll take credit. When we're in our group, we are talking about how you're beating 30-year-olds down this mountain and up the mountain. Yeah. And that's nothing to shake a stick at. Now, everything's relative. That's why you're going to say, shake a tooth at it. No, no, no. And everything's relative. So I think, in general, you've done an excellent job. You know, I'm happy. I was- You should pat yourself on the back.
00:05:07
Speaker
I was anxious and I was fearful coming into this. I had read a couple books on this. I researched probably more than necessary. Once again, you've got to look at the camera. You can't just look down at your feet and camera those places. One thing that I would say... You want to finish the thought? Let me finish the thought. We'll never forget what I was saying. Just give me a moment. You'll find it. You'll find it. Give me a moment to finish the thought. While he

finishes it. She won't. I'm trying to talk and she keeps interrupting me. I'm talking to my Aussie group over there. While he finishes the thought.
00:05:37
Speaker
So one other thing I would say is I was not prepared. We had a cake that was served to us today. The porters are amazing. The porters are crazy good. It's a, it makes the hike accessible for everybody. And so I just, you know, I would use Bob training does matter if you want to have a, this is a nice time and that's the idea. Uh, well, actually I think you're wrong. This is not a nice time. Oh.
00:06:06
Speaker
I had a pleasant time today. So if you are not incredibly physically fit, this is physically brutal. So for me, when we were going uphill, it was really tough. It is enjoyable, but I think people get trapped up on what's happiness or what's peace. That doesn't mean walking around going,
00:06:32
Speaker
Everything's great all the time. It is dealing with the necessary suffering of life. Yesterday was a struggle train. Five hours up. It was. Steps. Narrow steps. The rocks. Nothing's flat. All the rocks are round. Your ankles, if your ankles could slap you, they would slap you. They go, wha-bam!
00:06:58
Speaker
i mean i'm having old injury flare-ups just going down the rocks there and uh you know producer bob's gonna fire you you're gonna get yourself no you're gonna get yourself fired so i know it's a spiritual journey it
00:07:20
Speaker
And part of it is just that the spiritual journey is that when you are pushing yourself to the max, you find a different mindset. And that's the take home message. For me, the blessing of this journey was the struggle. If this was easy peasy, I would not enjoy it as much.
00:07:46
Speaker
If it was not a struggle train, that was the blessing coming into this being under trained. Yeah. It would have been more of a struggle. Yeah. And so I totally, totally appreciate that.
00:08:00
Speaker
Well, I love hearing all that. Do you really? I do. Just have never said that she loves hearing me talk. I think she's literally just saying that. No, I really do. No, I love hearing it just because it's very true. But here's the other thing I want to say. I had a lot of people say, make it spiritual, don't record anything. You know what?
00:08:22
Speaker
No, it's up to the individual. Figure out what works for you. For me, I actually loved having a little recorder to do audio stuff. Pay attention, this producer Bob again. We almost literally had a bird almost just flew behind the camera. I'm trying to be a team player too. No, I hear you. I hear you. A little bit of stuff. I'm trying to be a team player. We can start walking down there. We're going to walk down there. We're going to start walking this way. But here's the deal. Yeah. It's your journey.
00:08:48
Speaker
Your journey's not my journey. My journey is not yours. Your journey? I could write this shit. Sorry, this stuff. Seriously? Are you kidding me? Alright, we got a group behind us. Okay, now we gotta hustle. Just remember, we're a task through.
00:09:03
Speaker
Uno, photo. Oh, yes, you see. Yes. You hold? She's going to take a photo. Wait, wait, wait. We're still recording live, but that's OK. This is called helping other people. It is. You're very good at helping. OK. There's our group right there. Uno, uno, dos, tres. Dos, tres. Oh, wait, wait. OK, uno, dos, tres. Look at the beautiful group. Good looking group. You guys are very beautiful, all of you.
00:09:33
Speaker
You want us? Oh, selfie.
00:09:37
Speaker
Awesome. There we go. We got it in the picture. All right. Good deal. That's where life go. But let me finish my thought. Let's keep watching. OK. OK. Because it's starting to rain and I need to get my stuff on. OK. Just stop. This is not a time to get up close. No, it is. I want to give one last thought. OK. Give it and let's go. Spiritually, it's your journey. And who are we to tell people what their journey is? No. Are you kidding me? Stop.
00:10:05
Speaker
It's going to be the Bob show now. You can unclip your microphone. So we're close to Machu Picchu. This is the end of oh good. She actually unplugged herself. That's terrific. It's the end
