Celebrating Newcastle's Victory

00:00:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome to the Daily Newcastle podcast. My name is Ian Mackay. I'm hosting tonight in a very, very jolly mood because I am literally just out the car, back from watching Newcastle beat Chelsea 2-0.
00:00:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
And have we got one foot in the Champions League already? Who knows? We don't want to count on any chickens. I have two people with me tonight who aren't going to count any chickens.
00:00:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
Probably going to be spending the time looking for some sort of soothing sunblock has above caught the sun today. First of all, catching the sun in the same place that I was at was Mrs. Nicola Pringle Adams. How are you, Nicola?

More dangerous driving.
00:01:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
And dangerous driving here.
00:01:11
Nicola Pringle-Adams
but I have caught the sun on my face.
00:01:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
Good stuff.
00:01:12
Nicola Pringle-Adams
i like an absolute tomato.
00:01:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
And Michael, who was... weren't at the match, Michael, were You were watching it and listening to the commentary to know what the public version of that game was.
00:01:18
Michael
No.
00:01:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
How did you manage to get sunburned and watch the game at the same time? Or was afterwards?
00:01:28
Michael
Outdoors, outdoor tellies. So what i what i what I had the luxury of is basically having the sun on my forehead, but not really on the rest of my body. So my forehead is now just a red block and the rest of me is as pale as what it normally is. So I'm going to turn up to work tomorrow and look horrendous like a Santander logo, but we'll see.
00:01:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
I was thinking more like later on in the shower, Michael, you'd be standing there looking like a swan vester, which is a safety match for all of our...
00:01:58
Michael
Anyone wants to hear about me in the shower, let's quickly move on.
00:02:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yes. Let's move on. Let's move on.
00:02:04
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Let's move it.
00:02:05
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Let's move it.
00:02:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Part

Eddie Howe's Surprising Line-up

00:02:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
one. Part one of today's podcast. Some rather surprising changes to the team news. I was kind of hoping that they were going to sleep Joe Linton in there because he'd been to Barcelona and he'd got an injection.
00:02:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
And that would have been a surprise. But I was... Treble-y surprise when I saw what what team Eddie had picked to play.
00:02:24
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Mm-hmm.
00:02:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
We'd gone five at the back. We somehow found a combination that allowed Barnes, Gordon and Murphy to start that wasn't the one that Kevin suggested um a few days ago.
00:02:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
and What did you think of that line-up? I'll come to you first, Michael, because always come to Nicola first. Not today.
00:02:46
Michael
yeah
00:02:47
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Not today.
00:02:49
Michael
Yeah, it's one of those that going into the game, I thought it could be one of two things. And I thought we were going to go a proper old-fashioned 4-4-2 when I first saw it. Because i thought, oh, Barnes and Murphy is left midfielders and then Gordon just sitting off Isaac. And then I thought, hang on, that puts Dan Burnett left back.
00:03:08
Michael
Nah, he's not doing that. What else could it be? And then I realised, Bottman's back. It's a three at the back, which he's done so many times just with Bottman this season. does We don't see play a five at the back any other time than when Sven Bottman's in, but he does so well in it. yeah, Bottman being in, fantastic. I always love to see Sven back.
00:03:27
Michael
And then, yeah, Murphy, Barnes, Gordon, Isaac, all play together for the first time. And it only took two minutes to score, so it started off well, at least.

First Half Dominance by Newcastle

00:03:37
Michael
But we'll get to that.
00:03:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
It did start well. Nicola, were you surprised find the scene line up?
00:03:43
Nicola Pringle-Adams
yeah I must admit I stared at the team sheet for a whole it must have been about 15-20 minutes before the game has started thinking don't understand how we're lining up I couldn't work out if it was like what Michael said a 4-4-2 a 3-4-2-1 was like I don't understand what was going on um yeah i was i was i was happy to see Sven Votman back because we all know how much I love him
00:04:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
course.
00:04:05
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Yeah, and it was nice to see him find a way to play Barnes, Gordon, Murphy all at the same time. um And yeah, I thought we we played, we started well and we started strong and it worked and we obviously started electric at least.
00:04:19
Nicola Pringle-Adams
So yeah, so I thought the fought the line-up. When I first seen the team sheet, i was a bit like, i'm not sure how this is going to work. Once the game started, I could sort of see where Eddie was going with it and it looked good.
00:04:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
We did.
00:04:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
i thought I thought we started really, really well. I mean, obviously we scored after two minutes, which is a fabulous start, but we didn't stop after to that. i thought but I thought we went for them and I thought it was working quite well.
00:04:40
Michael
Yeah.
00:04:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
Probably first half hour was definitely hours, but then then the Chelsea midfield was starting to have a a lot of possession and it was kind of even.

Controversial Red Card for Chelsea

00:04:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
But the game changed with Nicholas Jackson's forearm smash to the lovely Sven's face and the red card, which was, I'm amazed, sitting 100 yards up in row X level seven, I could see that was a red card straight away.
00:05:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm not sure why it took far to tell the referee. But tell me how you saw it, Nicola, from where you were sitting.
00:05:27
Nicola Pringle-Adams
obviously, where I was sitting, obviously, did that happen at the start of the second half? or the end of the No, it must have been towards the end of the first half, wasn't it?
00:05:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
about 35 minutes.
00:05:34
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Yeah. So, obviously, it happened um was near the halfway line.
00:05:35
Michael
Yeah.
00:05:38
Nicola Pringle-Adams
So, i actually I've got to be honest, I was actually looking at where the ball was. I actually hadn't seen Sven go down. So, I was thinking to myself, do not tell me that he's gone down with a sawney.
00:05:49
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Do not tell me he's gone down with a sawney. Do not tell me he's gone down with a sawney because I started panicking because I thought I've just defended him on this podcast last week when Michael was asking about, I think we're playing a game of keep yourself.
00:06:11
Michael
Thank you.
00:06:14
Nicola Pringle-Adams
I don't understand why it took so long. It was a red card all day. All day. All, all day.
00:06:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:06:20
Nicola Pringle-Adams
And it wasn't until, obviously, the people around me were making so much noise that I thought, okay, no, something's definitely going on here. So, yeah. and But I've seen thing with VAR. It annoys me a little bit because it's it's clear as day that it was a red.
00:06:31
Nicola Pringle-Adams
don't know why it takes so long.
00:06:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
What did it look like on um the big screen, Michael, when you were watching it? Was it obvious from general play or did you have to go and watch the the VAR replays to see what had happened?
00:06:44
Michael
Yeah, I think it's one of those, and I'm going to refer to the Villa-Bournemouth game yesterday as well, where Tyrone Mings does a very similar thing.
00:06:50
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Mm-hmm.
00:06:51
Michael
Alex Scott, unfortunately, has now got a broken nose. He's out for the rest of the season. and Very similar thing with Jackson and Bottman, but the reason Mings didn't get the red card and why Jackson has, it's all about intent.
00:07:04
Michael
from what I saw, it didn't look like there was intent there straight away. It just looked like it was one of those normal challenges. until you you see the ball's going overhead. Jackson's not even looking at the ball.
00:07:14
Michael
He's looking directly at Sven Botman, and he's loading that elbow up like he's a wrestler. He's like, oh, I'm going to whack him with this. And he just ends up just hitting him flush with the forearm and the a little bit of the elbow as well.
00:07:23
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Yeah.
00:07:26
Michael
And it's it's that look at Sven Botman, which is about... two, three seconds of a look just staring straight at him, which is why the red was given. think if Jackson's not staring at bottom beforehand, it doesn't get given by VAR, but it's that intent that was the reason there.
00:07:40
Nicola Pringle-Adams
yeah
00:07:41
Michael
And I didn't see that at first. I only noticed it on VAR. So I can see why it took so long.
00:07:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, I think I understand Jackson's frustration, by the way, because that back three was really performing very, very well, cutting everything out, certainly heading everything clear that came through.
00:07:57
Michael
yeah
00:08:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
And Jackson, as their sort of point on their arrow, was the man who was being knocked to the ground and beaten to headers for all of that first half hour.
00:08:07
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Yeah.
00:08:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
No excuse for retaliating or responding in that way.
00:08:09
Michael
Yeah.
00:08:12
Nicola Pringle-Adams
ye
00:08:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
and So one up, then down to 10 men. Us and the ascendancy 10 minutes before half-time, I was thinking, right, this is where my prediction that we strolled to another slaughtering of a team at St. James' Park comes true. But I couldn't have been wrong because we seemed to slow to walking pace to finish that first half.
00:08:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then after the half-time break, Maresca made one or two tweaks. He took Madueke on and brought Rhys James on. I think he switched. Cole Palmer to play as a false nine up against our three centre-halves.
00:08:48
Michael
Yeah.
00:08:50
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Yep.
00:08:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
Chelsea were really good in the second half. I was very impressed with them. You have a slightly different take on that, Michael. You thought Newcastle were just really bad

Chelsea's Second Half Resurgence?

00:09:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
in the second half.
00:09:02
Michael
Yeah.
00:09:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
But was it not a little bit of both?
00:09:04
Michael
Yeah.
00:09:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
I didn't think we were awful. I just thought that...
00:09:07
Michael
yeah
00:09:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
I thought we did negate our spare man by playing three at the back when they didn't have a centre-forward on the pitch.
00:09:14
Michael
Yeah, I think the fact that Lewis Miley came on 55 minutes tells you how poor we were in the first 10 minutes. Eddie Howe doesn't like making changes that early until he can see that there's something wrong.
00:09:25
Michael
I think the fact that Bottman went off at 55, it was probably planned for 60-65. But Howe's gone, look, we kind of need it. And to be honest, when Miley came on, he didn't really do too much himself. But young kid, hasn't had much time on the pitch.
00:09:39
Michael
Completely accept why that is. But yeah, I just thought... I'm going to sound really harsh here, but it was almost as if during that second half we were playing with nine men with Alexander Azak and Harvey Barnes because movement from both of them was poor.
00:09:55
Michael
And then every time Barnes got the ball, his touch was so bad. I thought Shola Ramiobi was on the wing again. It was absolutely ridiculous.
00:10:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank
00:10:03
Michael
And to be honest, I understand that playing against 10 men is almost harder than playing against 11, but well the way Chelsea played is they had Neto on their right-hand side.
00:10:16
Michael
the The spare man was on their left. We had Barnes, Miley, and then Murphy to begin with. Obviously, it changed and this with the later changes. Originally, for that period, you think, oh, those three on the against Cucurea, Fernandes...
00:10:32
Michael
We're going to do so well. They're going to overwhelm them. We're going to get balls into the box. We're going to do brilliant. But it was just... Cougarere looked really comfortable. And he's not yeah he's not a great defender either. So you're sitting there and going, yeah, Chelsea might have been good. They might have been okay. But I generally think any other team puts them to the sword.
00:10:54
Michael
And we just weren't really on it today. And that's fine. Because at the end of the day... The result's all that mattered. Everything else has gone in our favour. So just like Brighton, if the result is fine, at this point, that's all that matters.
00:11:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
Good. Well, Michael just finished the podcast there in three minutes, but that's what I was going to say was I'm going to pause.
00:11:09
Michael
Positive.
00:11:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
I know I didn't come to you then, Nicola, but i promise I'll come back to you at the start of part two.
00:11:19
Nicola Pringle-Adams
My opinion doesn't matter.
00:11:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm going to play the bionic advert and we can delve a little bit into more individual performances at the end of the second half in part two.
00:11:49
Michael
Thank you.
00:12:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
I listened to that beforehand so I knew it had that Killer three-second break in the middle of the advert. So I didn't speak in the middle of it this time.
00:12:16
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Mm-hmm.
00:12:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hurrah. So let's go back to halftime. We've eased off. We've took a foot off the gas, but we're comfortable. We're playing 10 men and everything's rosy.
00:12:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
Rhys James comes on from Madweke.

Impact of Substitutions

00:12:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Cole Palmer goes to a false nine position. And Chelsea are transformed. Could you see what had happened there, Nicola?
00:12:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Could you see what the problem was and why it was so different?
00:12:45
Nicola Pringle-Adams
I actually said to my cousin who I came up with that when Nicholas Jackson got his red card, and obviously it's great, obviously they're down to 10 men.
00:12:55
Nicola Pringle-Adams
And Michael just touched on in his point. I actually said to my cousin, sometimes it's harder to play against 10 men than it is with a full squad. And I just think Chelsea, that was just Chelsea, and this particularly in the second half. The first half, they were poor.
00:13:08
Nicola Pringle-Adams
The second half, they, yeah, they stepped up a gear and were pressing us and we panicked. But what didn't help was there was quite a lot of stopping and starting in the second half. And sometimes I find that disrupts a game anyway.
00:13:22
Nicola Pringle-Adams
So you had obviously, um think Enzo was having an absolute fit about something. Then Cole Palmer was having a pi fit about something. Tino then went down, which thankfully wasn't a massive injury.
00:13:33
Nicola Pringle-Adams
And it's a lot of stopping and starting and that can really disrupt a game, I think, and the rhythm of a game.
00:13:34
Michael
Yeah. Yeah.
00:13:38
Nicola Pringle-Adams
And I think that's all. Don't get me wrong. We were sloppy at times in the second half. We gave balls away. We were last to a balls. We, you know, we were just kicking for hope sometimes. But I don't think we were awful.
00:13:50
Nicola Pringle-Adams
I think just Chelsea stepped up a gear in that second half with the changes that but their manager made. yeah, like I said, i think the rhythm of the game was just disrupted ever so slightly in the second half.
00:14:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
I was terrified having included Rhys James in the disappointing Premier League XI that he could come up and form an 11-man Chelsea team into a 10-man Chelsea team that starts bossing Newcastle on their home turf because they were doing that in the first 10 minutes weren't they and I think touched on it Michael
00:14:15
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Yeah. Yeah.
00:14:15
Michael
Yeah. 100%.
00:14:18
Nicola Pringle-Adams
yeah
00:14:18
Michael
and so
00:14:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
the The spare man that we had was the three at the back without any centre-forward to mark, which Eddie spotted very, very quickly and took Sven off and brought Miley on.
00:14:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
And Miley took a minute or two to even get to the pace of the game. I did notice him chasing and harrying. Very often the the one midfielder behind Alex Izak who's actually pressing Chelsea in their own half.
00:14:45
Michael
Mm-hmm.
00:14:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
and But yeah, not particularly effective. Not particularly effective.
00:14:49
Michael
Yeah.
00:14:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
The good news, though, was that didn't actually equate to very many shots on target.
00:14:50
Michael
Nah.
00:14:52
Michael
Mm-hmm.
00:14:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
So I think the back line cut a lot of the danger out. I think they played quite well. And Pope made a really good save, low down to his left, proving that he's not a one-armed bandit anymore.
00:15:07
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Mm-hmm.
00:15:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
He still can get down on that side. Made a really good save, very low. and Michael, why did Chelsea not have more shots on target?
00:15:20
Michael
I think chels when you look at the way Chelsea set up and the way they played the first half with Jackson, they were very much looking to counter-attack. They were looking to catch Newcastle on the break. Obviously, the early goal would have disrupted that for them.
00:15:32
Michael
But then when Jackson goes off, they've got to completely change the way they play. First half, very long ball. Second half, very... has to be a bit more intricate. They're playing sort of...
00:15:41
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Yep.
00:15:42
Michael
We've sat players back, which, to be honest, I think was a direct move by Eddie Howe because he knew, you know, they've got to break us down. we don't have to do anything and it worked.
00:15:50
Nicola Pringle-Adams
yeah
00:15:52
Michael
and But they had to play these intricate passes to just try and get in the to try and get something in. And it wasn't like what we saw sometimes with Newcastle where, admittedly, Barnes and Murphy would just look at the player standing right in front of them and go, oh, you know what I'm going to take a shot.
00:16:07
Michael
And it would just bounce off them and go for a corner or out for a throw in, which I saw too many times today. They actually tried to pass in between the lines and it it worked a couple of times, but the the final touch for Chelsea just wasn't really there.
00:16:19
Michael
They had the other two chances with Cucurea and Enzo Fernandes. Both were good saves by Pope. But yeah, they didn't really create all that much. And I think that's just because they just didn't have a striker.
00:16:32
Michael
You look at it and go, oh, if Alexander Azak's in that team and they have someone to hit, they probably come away with at least a draw from that performance. But they didn't, thankfully.
00:16:44
Michael
Azak plays for us and it's fine.
00:16:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
remember one dribble colded right down onto the byline. byline And he he put a fantastic ball right along from where we were sitting, right across the middle of the six yard box.
00:16:57
Michael
Yeah.
00:16:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Nobody there. Somebody was racing to try and save it from going it there out for a throw in. And Palmer just came onto the pitch, shrugging his shoulders going, well, you know, if there's nobody there to get a cross in like that, what the hell are we doing?
00:17:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
So, yeah, that was encouraging.
00:17:12
Michael
yeah
00:17:13
Nicola Pringle-Adams
That's about all Palmer done, all game, by the way.
00:17:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
that was encouraging
00:17:17
Nicola Pringle-Adams
It's very quiet.
00:17:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
What do you think about the substitutions? I'm wondering if Gordon was actually not much fit for him to come off because I thought thought Gordon was far more threatening than Barnes was and then Barnes switched to his favoured left side and seemed to take a step down from being fairly abysmal.
00:17:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
Am I being harsh, Nicola?
00:17:42
Nicola Pringle-Adams
I don't think Harvey Barnes had a massive step down because... um I'm trying to think back to the game now. Michael, take over. Quick.
00:17:50
Michael
yeah
00:17:51
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Well, I think.
00:17:51
Michael
Yeah, I didn't think Barnes had a great game. I did think he was quite poor. But what I will say is that out of the two wingers, Barnes was given more time on the ball.
00:18:01
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Yeah.
00:18:02
Michael
And they did sit off him a little bit more, but I would say he was the more threatening in the final third because he was, he got the ball. He had a number of efforts, a lot of them blocked, and unfortunately. And realistically, should have made it two nil early in the but midway through the second half, but just a poor touch.
00:18:18
Michael
So yeah, he didn't play well.
00:18:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:18:20
Michael
I think the reason Gordon probably came off is because he spent the entirety of the first 60 minutes just being hacked down by Moises Saicedo, who, how he didn't get a yellow card in the, in the, I think it was around the 20th minute where,
00:18:27
Nicola Pringle-Adams
On the floor. Hmm.
00:18:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:18:34
Michael
He just completely stops a counter-attack. And then we get what we get a yellow card pretty much 10 minutes later for the same thing. Yeah, I think Gordon was probably brought off to preserve him because he had been just hacked down all game. And Barnes wasn't great, unfortunately. But...
00:18:53
Michael
Look, he's allowed a bad game, particularly when we win. But, yeah, you want to see more from him in the the next two games because when it comes to who we might get rid of in the summer, games like that aren't going to help you.
00:19:03
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Yeah.
00:19:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's very true. very you
00:19:06
Nicola Pringle-Adams
We said it before though, haven't we, where we've said like Barnes will have like
00:19:11
Nicola Pringle-Adams
a stint of real bad form games. And then he'll just hit a real streak of great games.
00:19:15
Michael
No.
00:19:18
Nicola Pringle-Adams
And it seems to be this kind of rollercoaster with him where he hits peak performance, then dips, then hits peak performance, then dips.
00:19:23
Michael
Yeah, 100%.
00:19:25
Nicola Pringle-Adams
So yeah, he's a real tough player sometimes to have an opinion on because I really like him. But then other times, like today, I get really frustrated with him.
00:19:33
Michael
yeah hundred so
00:19:34
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Because I wouldn't say he, what I was trying to say was, I wouldn't say he slipped off in the second half because I feel like he was the same in the first half.
00:19:42
Nicola Pringle-Adams
So feel like you just perform the same.
00:19:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
was just guy I was just mentioning that when once Gordon had gone off, Barnes went over onto his favoured left side and really didn't do anything. That's where he had that appalling, God, such a heavy touch.
00:19:54
Michael
Yeah.
00:19:54
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Yeah.
00:19:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Man with concrete boots or something. His touch to control the ball was actually what sent the ball into Sanchez's arms rather than the shot that he should have had.
00:20:05
Michael
Yeah.
00:20:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
But yeah, I mean, you know, I probably would have done the same if I was playing.
00:20:12
Michael
ah ah You and me both, man.
00:20:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
and Yeah, what can we do? The good news is that even though it felt a little bit like, my God, we shouldn't be we shouldn't be like this and we are kind of hanging on, I'm wondering if Eddie didn't think that he could just do a like he did at Arsenal away and just sit back and let them try and break us down, knowing that they wouldn't.
00:20:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
But fortunately... When Dan Byrne converted himself into a left winger for a free kick, he was able to put rather rather a sneaky little ball back in for bruno for Bruno to be able to do his own Anthony Gordon impersonation.

Securing the Win

00:20:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
And what I thought was curl it into the top corner. You told me there's a horrendous deflection on it, which helps it dip into the far corner, Michael.
00:20:59
Michael
Yeah.
00:21:00
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Was there a deflection?
00:21:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
I didn't see that.
00:21:02
Michael
Yes. Big deflection.
00:21:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, we didn't see it
00:21:02
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Yeah.
00:21:03
Michael
Yeah.
00:21:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
saw... we saw the ball heading towards the goal and then everybody stood up in front of us cheering, assuming it was going in. i mean, I still haven't seen the ball go in.
00:21:03
Nicola Pringle-Adams
I didn't see it.
00:21:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm assuming because we wouldn't 2-0. That was when it went in.
00:21:17
Michael
Yeah.
00:21:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
and
00:21:17
Michael
Yeah.
00:21:19
Nicola Pringle-Adams
No.
00:21:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
But yeah, it was was fantastic. It was a relief.
00:21:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
And the last 10 minutes with injury time spent singing cheerio, cheerio, cheerio to the Chelsea fans as they left early. then letting everybody know that we're going up the Premier League again.
00:21:24
Michael
yeah
00:21:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
That was great fun. And we could also breathe a little bit of a sigh of relief.
00:21:40
Michael
but do a I do you just have one thing to mention that was hilarious to see on the telly, and I hope he get ah hope it's in the highlights package, I haven't checked. But in the free kick, when Byrne does convert himself to the left back, he's got miles of space, and it it takes a while for the free kick to actually happen.
00:21:58
Michael
And he stood there just shouting, effing pass me the ball. And you can see him so frustrated. And then the ball the ball gets launched over to him.
00:22:09
Michael
And it's it's a little bit behind him. So you can see he's frustrated. But then he tries to play the one-two with Bruno. And you can see he's running like he's Anthony Gordon trying to get him behind. And it's it's just brilliant because I genuinely think when he's...
00:22:23
Michael
like agitated and determined. Genuinely, there's nothing stopping Dan Bird. He's like a freight train, but I would have loved to have seen what would have happened if Bruno had given the ball back, if it would have been like Leicester in the cup all those years ago, where he just curls it into the corner.
00:22:38
Michael
But if if you do get the chance, watch the highlight and just see Dan Bird, because he's hilarious.
00:22:39
Nicola Pringle-Adams
to watch that.
00:22:44
Michael
I love him.
00:22:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, we could see him from right up there with his arms out, desperate for it, standing on his own.
00:22:48
Michael
Yeah.
00:22:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
The free kick goes across and we're all going, why are you not knocking it up in the air? Because, you know, it's Dan Byrne. He can score a header from the corner of the box, no problem.
00:23:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
But yeah, it hit him on his feet. But fortunately, he didn't panic. And he gave it to Bruno who did that.
00:23:05
Nicola Pringle-Adams
He was fantastic today, Dan Van.
00:23:07
Michael
Yeah, he's brilliant.
00:23:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:23:08
Nicola Pringle-Adams
He was brilliant today, as always.
00:23:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think i think I'm going to pause and ask
00:23:10
Nicola Pringle-Adams
He was really good today.
00:23:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
Michael to read the Zencastr advert or am I going to ask Nicola to read it?
00:23:14
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Oh, it's me.
00:23:18
Michael
I'm going to play an Uno reverse card and get Nicola to do it.
00:23:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
Why don't you surprise us? There you go
00:23:23
Global Sports Podcast Network

00:23:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you very much indeed Nicola that was great so is it tough to pick a man of the match this is a game where way you would pick Sandro Tonali as your man of the match hmm
00:23:56
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Sandra Tanale!
00:23:59
Michael
Really? Oh.
00:24:02
Nicola Pringle-Adams
No, I just like thinking his name.
00:24:03
Michael
He was good.
00:24:04
Nicola Pringle-Adams
He was good. I can't decide between him and one other.
00:24:05
Michael
Oh.
00:24:06
Nicola Pringle-Adams
No, it is between him and one other.
00:24:09
Michael
Let's see.
00:24:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
what about you you saw it all on the telly Michael you've probably seen what everybody else has said who got it who got man of the match
00:24:13
Michael
It
00:24:17
Michael
it was the person I'm going to say, Dan Byrne.
00:24:19
Nicola Pringle-Adams
BDB.
00:24:20
Michael
B, D, B.
00:24:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
he would He would have been my choice.
00:24:22
Michael
Honestly, an absolute colossus. Yeah, absolute colossus. whether a kid went Whether Chelsea attacked in the air, which they didn't do much because they realised early on they were winning nothing.
00:24:33
Michael
There's a corner midway through the the second half where Sancho stood over it and he's like, I don't want to whip this in, someone come short. And he ends up having to just whip it in.
00:24:41
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Yeah.
00:24:43
Michael
And I'm pretty sure it's big Dan Byrne that clears it again. yeah, whether it was at his feet, in the air, and he even contributed on the attacking side, header in the first half as well.
00:24:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:24:53
Michael
I would have loved it if that went in. An absolute bullet. But yeah, Dan Byrne, when it comes to these big games, we said cup final number one, he was there for us and he ran the show from defence.
00:25:03
Michael
Cup final number two, he's done exactly the same. When it comes to big games, all you need the big man.
00:25:06
Nicola Pringle-Adams
yeah
00:25:09
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Make down Ben.
00:25:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's a big man. Yeah. Hey, you'll never beat Dan Byrne. He's from Blythe.
00:25:14
Michael
No, really?
00:25:15
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Thank you.
00:25:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
m know Yeah, I'll tell you who I thought played well. and This is just me observing as a football fan.
00:25:21
Michael
if
00:25:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
I thought Pedro Neto was excellent. He's given Tino the hardest afternoon I've ever seen Tino have because Tino's so fast.
00:25:27
Michael
Really?
00:25:33
Michael
Mm-hmm.
00:25:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
You know, Salah, forget him. Never get a shot. never get Never get a touch in the box. But I thought Neto... I thought was close. I thought Tino did well against him.
00:25:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
But I didn't know Neto was as good a player at that. Coming inside, coming back. I thought it was just some flash Harry that whizzed down the wing and nothing else. But thought he played quite well.
00:25:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
But that's a Chelsea player. Hey, forget that. One other player, wouldn't it be man of the match, but was solid throughout. Didn't disappoint. Nick Pope. Nobody mentions Nick Pope and he keeps pulling out saves that keep us in the game.
00:26:07
Michael
Yeah.
00:26:08
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Yeah.
00:26:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
He did it twice in the second half. I know he he's the goalie and Roy Keane would say, that's his job. But he's got to do his job. I know so many goalkeepers don't do the job.
00:26:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
Nick Pope does.
00:26:24
Michael
Yeah.
00:26:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
I thought he did really, really well.
00:26:25
Nicola Pringle-Adams
true. Yeah, he did well today.
00:26:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
And his distribution, when he's got his ball and he runs out to the edge of the box and he does an overarm throw for his distribution, that could be really...
00:26:27
Michael
It's good stuff.
00:26:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
that could be really Slick, really damaging, really accurate.
00:26:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
Threw the ball out to Tino a few times, which looked like we're on a break, except Tino would then cut back and give it back to Dan. But yeah. and Where does it leave us for our Champions League qualification?
00:26:40
Michael
Yeah.
00:26:54
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Do I not to get give Mamma another match?
00:26:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh, sorry.
00:26:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
You said you had two, and one of them was Sandro Tenali. Are you going to add more to that then?
00:27:01
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Yeah, but you didn't ask me why.
00:27:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
There are nine other players you could choose. Go on, Nicola.
00:27:06
Michael
Callum Wilson.
00:27:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
Who is...
00:27:06
Nicola Pringle-Adams
yeah
00:27:07
Michael
Yeah.
00:27:07
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Absolutely not.
00:27:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
Who's your man of the match?
00:27:08
Nicola Pringle-Adams
and It is Sandra... But you didn't ask me why. my opinion doesn't matter.
00:27:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
Why is it Sandro Tonali?
00:27:13
Nicola Pringle-Adams
No, right. So mine were between mine were between Sandra and Dan Byrne.
00:27:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
It does.
00:27:18
Nicola Pringle-Adams
But for the sake of Sandra Tsunali, I'm going to stick with him. help Because... he is, first of all, what i want to say is when his goal went in, that atmosphere at St. James Park, when that goal went in, was the loudest I have heard it since I've been there.
00:27:32
Nicola Pringle-Adams
It was bounce. I don't know if you agree with that, Ian, but it was absolutely bounce.
00:27:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
Absolutely.
00:27:36
Nicola Pringle-Adams
And, and it was, it erupted. And i was like, yeah, I love him. He needs to stay. but more so because i feel like Sandra Tonali, I actually don't remember a single player really, has made such a difference to a Newcastle squad.
00:27:50
Nicola Pringle-Adams
I just think he, like, they're all great, you don't get me wrong, but I just feel like he's so key and just, yeah, he had a great game today, I think. Mine.
00:27:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
You mean for the whole season? You're giving him Man of the Match largely because of his impact over the course of the whole season.
00:28:01
Nicola Pringle-Adams
And the whole team.
00:28:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's that's good.
00:28:05
Nicola Pringle-Adams
And today, because obviously it's gone.
00:28:05
Michael
Yeah, that comes on Wednesday.
00:28:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's allowed.
00:28:07
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Yes, it does.
00:28:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
that's That's going to be the Player of the Season award.
00:28:12
Nicola Pringle-Adams
It's not, though.
00:28:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
Who? aren't I don't know who he is. That's going to be a good good episode, ah isn't it? Listen out for that one later on in the week. Now, for me,
00:28:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm delighted to report that Liverpool have drawn with Arsenal, which is sufficient for me to be holding my fiver at for Newcastle to finish second.
00:28:29
Michael
yeah
00:28:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's still in our hands. We beat Arsenal next week and then beat Everton at home. We will finish second. I will be making 400 quid, 405. Might even get you two a pint at some stage.
00:28:48
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Thanks.
00:28:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't know. maybe i'll
00:28:49
Michael
Lovely stuff.
00:28:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
Maybe I'll just buy some cans at Tesco and post them.
00:28:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:28:53
Michael
That works for me.
00:28:53
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Perfect.
00:28:55
Michael
I'm a cheap date.
00:28:57
Nicola Pringle-Adams
I'm not.
00:28:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
But how close is Champions League qualification?
00:29:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think we've got one foot there.
00:29:05
Michael
Yeah.
00:29:05
Nicola Pringle-Adams
We are so nearly there.
00:29:06
Michael
Personally...
00:29:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
Either of you can dive in.
00:29:08
Michael
I think one more win and we're done.
00:29:09
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Go on, Michael.
00:29:10
Michael
One more win and we're done. We beat Arsenal next week. We're in there. Top twos on. I think even if we don't, I think Everton at home, Everton started well under Moyes. They haven't been great since. I know they beat Fulham.
00:29:25
Michael
But every team that seems to be fighting for eighth, except for Brentford, seems to have gone off the boil completely. So I think Everton, we're going to win quite comfortably.
00:29:31
Nicola Pringle-Adams
and
00:29:34
Michael
Arsenal, that'll just determine whether we finish second or third.
00:29:39
Michael
Love
00:29:43
Nicola Pringle-Adams
I yeah one more win which I'm begging begging is next weekend because not only would I love just to beat Arsenal 4-0 4-0 four times this season and the fact that Arteta tears are my favourite kind of tears, I would really like to go into the final game of the season having it all wrapped up and ready to go um and just go to that final game and enjoy the final game of the season. So, yeah, one more win and we're there.
00:30:12
Michael
It would be boring though, wouldn't it?
00:30:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
Would be fabulous.
00:30:14
Nicola Pringle-Adams
It wouldn't be the Newcastle way.
00:30:14
Michael
You've got to have something to play for.
00:30:16
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Yeah, true.
00:30:16
Michael
the best The best final day game of the season was the West Ham one where we had everything to play for. So let's replicate that. But Callum Wilson scores the last minute winner. I guess he's 50th.
00:30:27
Michael
There we go.
00:30:29
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Whoa, whoa, whoa.
00:30:29
Michael
Sorry, I just gave everyone a heart attack.
00:30:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
Excellent. No, we're going to beat Arsenal. but going to beat Arsenal.
00:30:35
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Not going to be awesome.
00:30:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then we still have to win that last game because we beat Arsenal and draw.
00:30:38
Michael
Yeah.
00:30:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
City can jump above us with two wins.
00:30:43
Michael
Yes.
00:30:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
So it's not down to just Arsenal.
00:30:44
Michael
There go.
00:30:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
we've we've We've got to win the last two games to make sure. Now, after today's results, with their which which was what Forrest, fortunately for us, who I told you had gone off a cliff, they drew at home with Leicester.
00:31:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
Not quite as embarrassing as City being held by Southampton yesterday, which was a real bonus.
00:31:01
Michael
Yep. 2-2. Yep.
00:31:07
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Jesus.
00:31:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
Arsenal have dropped two points at Liverpool. We've beaten Chelsea. I think Villa won, didn't they? But then, that's the other team in the top six that have picked up a win.
00:31:14
Michael
Yeah, 1-0.
00:31:15
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Yeah.
00:31:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
Who's missing out on Champions League? Are we ready to pick it yet?
00:31:24
Michael
Yeah.
00:31:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
Sorry, I should say, who's missing out on Champions League apart from Nottingham Forest?
00:31:29
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Oh.
00:31:30
Michael
Chelsea, Chelsea, Chelsea.
00:31:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
Is it us?
00:31:33
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Yeah. Chelsea.
00:31:34
Michael
You just would have heard that a lot today, so I just thought I'd add it on again. But yeah, Chelsea finished sixth
00:31:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
Wow. They were so good to settle the second half as well. And and all the way through that i'm thinking all the way through that, I'm thinking that they haven't played anybody over the age of 27 for the whole season.
00:31:45
Nicola Pringle-Adams
They weren't that great. Hmm.
00:31:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, if Chelsea had any sense, they would keep that squad together for three years and they wouldn't add to it and they wouldn't sell anybody from it.
00:31:52
Michael
Yeah, it's impressive.
00:31:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
But that's not what's going to happen, is it? There's probably going to be 10 people coming in and 10 people going out before pre-season.
00:32:04
Michael
Yeah.
00:32:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
and Right, so... We've beaten Chelsea 2-0 in the Champions League qualification play-off. We think we've got an easy game at home against Everton on the last game, which will put us champions leagues in the Champions League next year.
00:32:23
Nicola Pringle-Adams
They didn't say easy.
00:32:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
thanks But before that, we're going to win at Arsenal because beating Everton is going to give us runners-up.
00:32:25
Michael
think I did, to be honest.
00:32:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
Although, What Arteta said after the Liverpool game this afternoon was, of course, course if we can't be if we can't be the best, we want to get best of the rest.
00:32:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well done, Michael.
00:32:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
When City win their last two games as well, Arsenal will become the only team to finish fourth in a two-horse race. Well done. I'm going to leave it on that. I'm quite pleased with that. You can probably tell. Thank you very much indeed, Michael and Nicola, for joining me to discuss this.
00:33:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
I was going to say glorious afternoon. It's a glorious result. There was some glorious weather. It was kind of a nervy win, but a when it ends in a win, everything is all good in the garden.
