Michael hosts Nicola and Jo - to briefly discuss Newcastle's defeat to Everton but mainly to discuss the fact we'll be playing Champions League football next season, Callum Wilson's likely departure from NUFC (along with others) and we have a brief laugh at Gabby Agbonlahor before admitting we got a little lucky from a poor VAR decision.

Host - Michael Grahamslaw

Guests - Joanne Ayres & Nicola Pringle-Adams

00:00:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello everybody and welcome back to the Daily Newcastle podcast.
00:00:24
Jo
Brilliant.
00:00:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
I thought you'd like that, something a bit different. um new as If you can't tell, Newcastle United qualified for the Champions League on Sunday afternoon. It's now Monday morning. I, Michael Grahams, I'm your host today.
00:00:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
I sound a lot happier than I was yesterday. um but we'll get into that and today i'm joined by joanne's and nicola pringle adams the two hungover sisters of the daily newcastle podcast we'll start with you nick how's it going
00:00:51
Jo
Yes, we are.
00:00:54
Nicola Pringle-Adams
It's good. I'm feeling very fragile. Very, very fragile.
00:00:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
well we i hope you can last the length of the podcast which should be about 30 40 minutes we're going to be okay fantastic and what about you joe how are you doing
00:01:03
Nicola Pringle-Adams
I'll be fine. More good.
00:01:08
Jo
I'm good. I've had multiple coffees and a sausage sandwich and some hash browns and other things. So yeah, I'm fueled. um I'm good to go for at least a good half an hour, 45 minutes.
00:01:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
There we are. The grown-up. Good to go. Happy day as well. Well, I hope you don't crash too early, so we're going to get straight into it.

Reflecting on Past Defeats and Mixed Emotions

00:01:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
um So naturally, we're going to review the game, um which ended with Everton picking up a 1-0 win at St.
00:01:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
James' Park, unfortunately. Back-to-back end-of-season home defeats against Everton. ah The last was when we finished fifth under Alan Pardew. The beat were 3-1. Actually, it wasn't at home, but back-to-back defeats against Everton.
00:01:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
um But first of all, Joe... When the final whistle blows, how did you feel? Were you we are happy that Champions League was available or were you, well, that was a bit SHIT?
00:01:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
What do you think?
00:01:52
Jo
it was It was, yeah, it was the weirdest kind of entry into the Champions League I've experienced, that's for damn sure. and It wasn't the kind of elation that we had from two seasons ago.
00:02:03
Jo
um We were happy, right? But the staging was weird as well. It's like some people were kind of chanting, some people were just clapping, some people were kind of looking at each other a bit confused. Then we were looking down on the pitch and the players were obviously confused because they didn't know.
00:02:16
Jo
that Manu were up against Villa either. So you could see that they were like, oh my God, we went and lost it type of thing.
00:02:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:02:22
Jo
But then you could see kind of people running back and forwards. I think Barnes ran across and he much had filtered some news across. But then it was great when they then just started playing the Champions League theme and you know everyone got into at that point.
00:02:32
Jo
So yeah, we all cheered up at that point.
00:02:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:02:34
Jo
The players were bouncing. We started bouncing a bit and everyone was just like, oh, screw it. I know we lost, but yeah, we're in the Champions League again. It doesn't matter. So yeah, that was the general consensus.
00:02:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah Fair enough. And Nigla, is it the most underwhelming way to qualify for a Champions League?

Journey to the Champions League and Unexpected Circumstances

00:02:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah But do we expect anything else from Newcastle United?
00:02:53
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Well, they don't make it easy, do they? It's the most Newcastle United way to get into the Champions League. We're relying on a win.
00:02:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:02:59
Nicola Pringle-Adams
We don't win. And then we then have to rely on Man United to beat Villa, which ah surprisingly they did. And it was a Macam who scored a goal. So I'm just like, what, what,
00:03:12
Nicola Pringle-Adams
In what world does that happen?
00:03:12
Jo
Cheers.
00:03:13
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Yeah, cheers. So it's been a hell of a weekend, guys. um um Yes, it was the most Newcastle way to enter the Champions League. And I was at a wedding yesterday.
00:03:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:03:22
Nicola Pringle-Adams
So when that news fit would free around the table that I was sitting on, you can imagine how elated I was after a few drinks. So it was it was the most Newcastle United way. Probably very underwhelming. But let's just get straight to it.
00:03:34
Nicola Pringle-Adams
It's what it's about. We're back. Who cares?
00:03:37
Jo
Yeah, exactly.
00:03:37
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Who cares? Forget about the result.
00:03:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:03:38
Nicola Pringle-Adams
It's been a cracking season overall.
00:03:38
Jo
Exactly.
00:03:40
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Let's do it.
00:03:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, absolutely.
00:03:42
Jo
Yeah.
00:03:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
And it sort of reminded me a little bit of um in the championship when we won the league on the last day, Jack Grealish scoring. And it was actually Villa that did us the favour that day.

Post-Game Celebrations and Owner's Presence

00:03:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
And it was them that ultimately suffered this time around.
00:03:52
Jo
uh
00:03:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
But yeah, if there was ever a way not to qualify for the Champions League, this was probably it.
00:03:55
Nicola Pringle-Adams
yeah.
00:03:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And to be honest, from the looks of Eddie Howe and Kieran Trippier afterwards, so The players know it. you Nobody needs to tell them it wasn't good enough on the day. um
00:04:08
Nicola Pringle-Adams
yeah
00:04:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
But when the chart as he said, when the Champions League anthem hit, when the players' kids came onto the pitch and their wives, the family was all celebrating together, honestly. It was absolutely fantastic. It brings tears to the eye.
00:04:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then obviously the owners were there as well, and they congratulated. But do you think maybe, just having the owners there, Joe, was that, as things transpired, was it actually potentially a good thing?
00:04:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
We still qualified, but we showed the owners that Eddie Howe's done a brilliant job with that squad, and he needs backed immediately.
00:04:39
Jo
Mm-hmm.
00:04:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
What do you think?
00:04:42
Jo
Yeah, it might be, don't know, just something that, know it's strange to say we needed to lose. We didn't need to lose, but it was it's almost like a kick up the backside to say that, look, this is what's been achieved, like you say, with a squad, a thin squad at the end of the day.
00:04:55
Jo
But look at how close it was to not being achieved because of the fact we've got a thin squad.
00:04:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:05:00
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Yeah.
00:05:00
Jo
So it might just be that little silver lining, if you want to call it, in terms of this so-called big summer ahead that we're going to have, um to just make it really big. Really, let's let's let's go extra, yeah?
00:05:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:05:10
Jo
Yeah.
00:05:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
Absolutely.

Squad Depth and Investment Needs

00:05:12
Jo
Mm-hmm.
00:05:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
And Nick, the players like Jacob Murphy, i know we all love him on this podcast, and Dan Byrne, they've had fantastic seasons. And you can see Newcastle fills their hearts. But it's one of those that towards the end of the season, we've kind of seen, right, they had their purple patches. But as general players, if you're looking for top four, top six, they can't really be starting. Would you agree with that statement?
00:05:38
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Um, it's hard because they do bring so much to the squad, don't they? And I feel bad saying this, particularly, particularly like you say, in players like Dan Burn and Jacob Murphy after the season they have had this season.
00:05:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. Mm-hmm.
00:05:49
Nicola Pringle-Adams
It's been incredible for them. Um, i still think obviously they deserve to start, but I do agree in relation to the owners have to fully back Eddie this summer, um, and start and start spending some money.
00:06:04
Nicola Pringle-Adams
I mean, I know you obviously you've got all the PSR rules that change almost hourly, but but they really, he really needs back.
00:06:09
Jo
Mm-hmm.
00:06:11
Nicola Pringle-Adams
And I really hope they kind of not learnt their lesson. So obviously i know we're two seasons on, but from the last time we were in Champions League football, look how many injuries we got. Look at the game schedule. Look at how intense that became for pretty much the same squad of players, by the way, minus a couple.
00:06:25
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Um, you know, so

Managing Injuries and Potential Transfers

00:06:28
Nicola Pringle-Adams
it's just one of them. and they We were really thin on the ground then and we really struggled then going into that season um after we obviously exited the Champions League group. So, you've also got players like, I can't believe I'm about to say this either, but like Sven Botman who seems to pick up a little niggle every now and then.
00:06:43
Nicola Pringle-Adams
um i mean, I'm hoping after a summer of rest he should be fine, but It's players like that that need sort of protecting as well and appropriate backup and things like that. So, yeah, I really do hope yesterday showed the owners like, yeah, we need to really support this man now because he can you do so much.
00:07:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, absolutely.
00:07:01
Jo
Yep.
00:07:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
Those two players I mentioned, they're fantastic squad players and they epitomise what Newcastle United are about. So definitely think they should stay, but start and line up. It's questionable. um But yeah, I just thought I'd end part one with um obviously fantastic. We've got Champions League and a cup under ah ah belt. um Newcastle's are now a much more attractive proposition for players. It looks like Izak's going to stay.
00:07:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
um But Manchester United versus Aston Villa. that um Have either of you seen the the disallowed Aston Villa goal? Yeah.
00:07:38
Nicola Pringle-Adams
yeah
00:07:38
Jo
Yep.
00:07:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
um I'll start with you, Nick. What your thoughts?
00:07:42
Nicola Pringle-Adams
um If that was against us, as in if that was if that was given against us, and disallowed against us, I would be absolutely fuming. fu men i feel like Villa have been, I mean, obviously kind of happy it did happen.
00:07:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:07:55
Nicola Pringle-Adams
But um i yeah I really feel sorry for Villa there.
00:07:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:08:01
Nicola Pringle-Adams
They've been a bit done over. The keeper, it's out of the keeper's hands.
00:08:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
A hundred percent.
00:08:06
Nicola Pringle-Adams
it's out of the keeper's hands, he's lost control of it, doesn't have control of it, so I don't understand why that's been just, yeah, anyway, yeah, that's just Man United, getting what they want.
00:08:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
It doesn't have control.
00:08:07
Jo
Yeah.
00:08:11
Jo
Yeah.
00:08:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
that
00:08:16
Jo
ah
00:08:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
Do you have the the same thoughts, Joe?
00:08:18
Jo
Pretty much, but for once it favors us. Yeah, but um put this way, out I did say that if that had happened in the stadium yesterday for us, for example, place would have exploded because and rightly so especially when you watch it back I think the place would have exploded anyway and that's just on you know when you just see it singly but I think when you watch it back you see replay after replay and angle after angle and you think well at no point did the keeper even have control of it so it's not like he had control it and lost control of it um so it wasn't a fumble and you know in NFL terms or anything but it was literally the but the ball was kind of there and it tapped each hand and it come on it was a goal
00:08:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
No.
00:08:42
Nicola Pringle-Adams
What? Hmm.
00:08:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, 100%.
00:08:53
Jo
if we're going to be honest, it was a goal.
00:08:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
and toan
00:08:54
Nicola Pringle-Adams
but
00:08:55
Jo
But at no point are we going complain about it because it's favoured us massively. So thank you very much for being awful, ref and var. ah haven't Yeah, and favouring Man U, like you say.
00:09:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah We take it. um Obviously, Aston Villa, I'd feel sorry for them. But honestly, I say every club has that 5% of idiots that are in the fan base. And I think theirs are more unbearable than almost any others, maybe except Arsenal.
00:09:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And I do have a clip from Talk Sport where one of those idiots has wrote a letter. So let's listen to that.
00:09:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Honestly,

Media Critique and Emotional Manipulation

00:09:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
it brings a tear to the eye.
00:09:56
Jo
Sorry.
00:09:57
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Oh, gosh.
00:09:58
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Yeah, passing the tissues. It's very emotional.
00:09:58
Jo
Doesn't it?
00:09:59
Jo
Tear of joy. Hits
00:10:01
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Oh.
00:10:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah For anyone yeah everyone's favourite villain, Gabi Agbon-LaHor there, I do understand where he's coming from and he does go on to make actually quite a few decent points.
00:10:03
Jo
you in the feels, that one.
00:10:14
Jo
Yeah.
00:10:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
But when you act like such a prat on TalkSport like he does, to have something like that released. And by the way, that sad track in the background wasn't something that I added.
00:10:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
They added that and he knew that was happening. So to be that much of a prat...
00:10:28
Jo
That's awful.
00:10:28
Nicola Pringle-Adams
oh that is sad that's terrible yeah
00:10:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, it makes it very sad. And to be honest, I love it every time.
00:10:34
Jo
Wow.
00:10:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
But with that, we're going to go into our first advert the evening. And it's much better than Gabby Agbonahor. It's by Anique.
00:11:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
Absolutely cracking stuff. So, on to something that wasn't as good. ah The match.
00:11:27
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Yep.

Analysis of Everton Game and Strategy

00:11:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
We'll get into the actual game because this is supposed to be a review. Newcastle started with a, I don't want to say a back five because it was a little different to what we saw against Chelsea, Arsenal, so I say.
00:11:36
Jo
Mm-hmm.
00:11:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
Botman, Shaw and Byrne all together. We said in the build-up, we didn't think that should be a case. Back four. Everton, they were going to let us have the lion's share of possession. We saw that as well.
00:11:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think we had 63, 64% in the end. But I thought having that three in midfield would give us control. But generally, I thought Everton were the better team in the game. And Newcastle, our most dangerous moments seem to come from set pieces. What do you think, Joe?
00:12:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
Do you agree with that?
00:12:09
Jo
Yeah, pretty solid analysis, really, I'll be honest. so It was just a poor game, but they were the better team that's, you know, held our hands up. And how many times we said this season that we have been the worst team or not got the right results when we've ended up having more positions.
00:12:22
Jo
So there we go. That's just another game where it's happened.
00:12:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:12:24
Nicola Pringle-Adams
It's
00:12:24
Jo
So um we just weren't very effective. There was a lot of sloppy play, a lot of missed passes, just no unity in the players. They just didn't look, I don't know, almost comfortable or something.
00:12:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:12:36
Jo
Nice long word I'm going to use here. They look very discombobulated. So, yeah.
00:12:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
four
00:12:40
Nicola Pringle-Adams
very big word.
00:12:40
Jo
It's a nice one, isn't it? It's a good one. but big Big word for a hangover girl.
00:12:43
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Big word for a hangover day.
00:12:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:12:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh.
00:12:44
Jo
I tell you that one, isn't it?
00:12:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Get you a big number in Scrabble, that
00:12:46
Jo
I tell you, doesn't it?
00:12:46
Nicola Pringle-Adams
I know, yeah.
00:12:47
Jo
um But they did. They looked exactly that, didn't they?
00:12:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, 100%.
00:12:50
Jo
But, yeah, it was just... It was a game that, unfortunately... Kind of the longer it went on, it almost looked like we would have never scored if this had just kept going on and on and on.
00:13:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, i agree.
00:13:00
Jo
it I think it's just a disappointing kind of end of the season in that sense, because you you just expected them to come out with a bit more oomph, put that way.
00:13:03
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Last
00:13:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, 100% agree.
00:13:08
Jo
That's all.
00:13:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I think one reason why we haven't really seen that oomph in recent games, and it's a testament to Kieran Trippier, actually, um that right-hand side of that Barnes and Murphy pivot.
00:13:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Obviously, Nicola, you weren't able to see the game yesterday, um but it's not that much different than what we saw against Arsenal and what we've seen previously when those two started together.
00:13:29
Jo
Mm-hmm.
00:13:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah Do you think it's just one of those where the experiment hasn't worked with those and you know when we get in a new right-winger... We'll probably change that completely and we'll never see that horrific pivot of Murphy and Barnes again.
00:13:45
Nicola Pringle-Adams
We've said it before though, haven't we? Where like, I don't know if it's a Barnes issue, not a Barnes issue, but as in like, he's so up and down with inform. So like he'll have six, seven, eight games on the bounce where you're like, wow, he was so worth the money that we spent on him.
00:13:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah,
00:13:58
Nicola Pringle-Adams
He was so worth And then he'll just then go back on another sort of six, seven, eight game of being like, why did we spend that money on him?
00:14:01
Jo
Mm-hmm.
00:14:05
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Like he just, he's so, and I feel sorry for him because when he's on his day, he is fantastic.
00:14:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
I got that.
00:14:10
Nicola Pringle-Adams
But when he's not on his day, you have games like yesterday and I have watched a few highlights where it's so underwhelming um and it must be frustrating for him as well and I don't obviously don't want him to be like listening to any sort of negative comments and feeling rubbish but it must be frustrating for him as to why he's so in and out of form um will we see that no I think once we get that new right winger in we probably won't see it as much as what we see now um I'll be honest but it depends on who we get if we get one um and it depends on um
00:14:34
Jo
Mm-hmm.
00:14:41
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Eddie really because he tends to do this thing where he'll get a play bring a player in and not put them on straight away we've seen it with Lewis Hall we've seen it with Osula you know we're seeing it all the time so might just one of them where it is we'll have to experiment a little bit and maybe be patient
00:14:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:14:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. 100%, and it worked with Bruno, it worked with Tenali, it worked with Lewis Hall, so maybe it works with Harvey Barnes as well.
00:15:00
Nicola Pringle-Adams
yeah
00:15:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
And to be fair, what happens with Harvey Barnes is very much going to depend on the player that was hooked at halftime against Everton, Anthony Gordon. um To be honest, out of the three on the pit attacking players on the pitch at the time, the three in the forward role, should I say, a lot very attacking players, but I thought he was the most dangerous, although he was up against Ashley Young, who is genuinely horrible.
00:15:20
Nicola Pringle-Adams
you
00:15:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
older than some granddads in the world right now. So maybe, just maybe, that isn't too much of a... It's not too much of a positive for Gordon, but I was very surprised to see him hooked at half-time.
00:15:37
Jo
yeah
00:15:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah Do you think maybe the rumours are true that Gordon's on his way out, or do you just think it's one of those where he's probably got a niggle, he's not really up to full fitness, and we've just had to play someone because you know we've got what if we're really short on those

Anthony Gordon's Future and Performance Inconsistencies

00:15:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
kind of areas? What did you what did you think, joe
00:15:55
Jo
um I've always always tried to look on the positives of and think that it's not him on his way out or you know we'll have talked about Gordon and he's kind of strange form let's call it um recently and I do like to think that it's got nothing to do with the fact that he might be wanting to try and get out I mean god watch the summer happen and prove us completely wrong I mean I hope I'm not because I don't want to see him go but
00:16:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. Hmm.
00:16:17
Jo
yeah I don't know. I don't know what that was about because I do agree that he was not the worst of the front three. I thought Barnes in particular, off the back of what you've just been talking about, Nick, and I think you would have agreed watching it, that Barnes, and I even said during the game, was particularly poor yesterday. um The guy next to me bleated on and going, this is all on Murphy, this is all on Murphy.
00:16:38
Jo
And I had to keep my trap shut, which I did quite well after too many rums. um But the point is, like I thought, yeah, all right, he made a mistake, slip up for the actual goal. But the whole game's hardly on bloody Murphy, you know what I mean? like the The team as a whole were playing poorly, you know what i mean? It's hardly just down to one player.
00:16:54
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Mm-hmm.
00:16:54
Jo
And like I say, I think Barnes in particular was particularly poor, which means unless something else has happened that we don't know about at half-time, he was having a niggle, something like that, it was a strange substitution.
00:16:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah,
00:16:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
he was.
00:17:04
Jo
But because we don't know why it's happened, it's all just... us guest work, isn't it really? so
00:17:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, to be fair, it it is worth noting as well, for those sitting here thinking I'm trying to send Anthony Gordon out the club, He was he was um tackled quite heavily by two or three players in that first half, um some of which got fouls deliveredly and some didn't.
00:17:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
There is also one where he dives on the floor and it's absolutely pathetic. Ashley Young doesn't touch him, but less about that because don't like talking about those kind of things. Yeah. But yeah, so he could have picked up a knock and it could have just been that. Obviously, we'll find out more in the summer.
00:17:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
But I want to end part two on a dampener before I go all the way up to the positivity in part three.
00:17:43
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Oh, no.
00:17:46
Jo
Bye.
00:17:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And it's a pretty damning stat, in my opinion. um In our last six games, when we've needed the team to show up the most, when 11 v 11, we've scored three goals.
00:18:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
two of which have been back post-tappings, and the other has been a penalty from a stupid handball against Brighton. um The rest were scored when other teams were down to 10 men. Ipswich and Chelsea, both at home, and we both said we all said that the performance those days weren't particularly up to standard. So not really at the standard we we'd expect, but ah performance issues affects all of us uh except Zencaster I've heard Zencaster have no performance issues at all so what I'm gonna do is I'm going to do the old Zencaster advert myself because I love them so much and it's not the fact that I forgot to ask someone to get it up at the start of the episode
00:18:44
Jo
Not at all.
00:18:45
Nicola Pringle-Adams
laughter laughter

Reflecting on Newcastle's Season and Social Media Reactions

00:19:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's a lot of my voice and a lot of improv. The improv king, shall we say. um
00:19:17
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Oh my god.
00:19:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
So the season's done. People don't want to hear my voice much more.
00:19:20
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Boo!
00:19:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
67 points. Only the fifth time we've had over 65 points in the Prem since 1997. First domestic trophy in 70 years. Is this the best season in your memory for Newcastle United?
00:19:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
Nicola.
00:19:38
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Yas, queen. That's what I'm going to say.
00:19:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh, okay.
00:19:43
Nicola Pringle-Adams
No, I'm joking. um
00:19:44
Jo
And I was just like, um...
00:19:46
Nicola Pringle-Adams
come on, if we could all sit here at the beginning of the season, which I'm sure we all did and say, by the end of the season, you're going to win your first domestic trophy in however many years, you're going to qualify for Champions League football.
00:19:59
Jo
Yeah.
00:19:59
Nicola Pringle-Adams
You're going to have probably one of the best strikers in the world on your team, the best midfield three on your team.
00:20:00
Jo
Mm-hmm.
00:20:04
Nicola Pringle-Adams
We'll be all like, yeah, okay. We'll snap your hand off. So I've logged onto social media this morning um after being disgustingly drunk last night.
00:20:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:20:09
Jo
Mm-hmm.
00:20:11
Nicola Pringle-Adams
And I couldn't even read a message on my phone. So I logged onto social media and they nothing new.
00:20:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
Nothing new there.
00:20:16
Nicola Pringle-Adams
And there is um as a few people that are obviously disappointed about the performance yesterday. Totally, totally agree. um But there's also the minority. And I think i'm going to go back to what you said, Michael, where every fan base has about 5% of idiots, um of fans um who are moaning that we finished fifth and we should have finished higher.
00:20:27
Jo
it
00:20:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yep.
00:20:34
Nicola Pringle-Adams
We probably should have finished higher, but why you moaning?
00:20:36
Nicola Pringle-Adams
We're in the Champions League football. We're in Champions League football.
00:20:36
Jo
Cause
00:20:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:20:39
Nicola Pringle-Adams
So,
00:20:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
Second and fifth doesn't make a difference.
00:20:41
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Doesn't make a difference. We've secured Europe.
00:20:42
Jo
True.
00:20:43
Nicola Pringle-Adams
The only difference it would make is if we were battling between second and first, then you would be annoyed. So, yeah, exactly.
00:20:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's couple of mil.
00:20:48
Jo
Yeah.
00:20:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's it.
00:20:49
Nicola Pringle-Adams
So, you know, i just think it's probably definitely a memory, the best season that I've experienced for Newcastle United anyway.
00:20:50
Jo
Mm-hmm.
00:20:58
Nicola Pringle-Adams
um And I'm so proud of them. I'm so, so proud of them. It actually makes me a little bit emotional thinking about it.
00:21:04
Jo
Mm-hmm.
00:21:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
but Well, we'll move away from the emotion because before we've already had ah the emotion at Gabby Agbon-Lahor. We don't need any more.
00:21:12
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Thank you.
00:21:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Joe, what do you think? Best season in your memory?
00:21:16
Jo
um Yeah, and I've obviously got a few more years on you guys, so ah can even... Yeah, basically. No, I mean, obviously, come on, we've had some amazing times, and i still, obviously, I was young when the entertainers were around, and don't get me wrong, like those were some fantastic memories and stuff like that, but we didn't win anything, and I think winning that trophy, we were so desperate for, we've discussed it so many times, that it's just been unreal, man. And like you say, to top it off by finishing the Champions League...
00:21:43
Jo
The only one, strange enough, that I would give it on par with is the 22-23 season. And the reason I say that is me my dad still talk about it.
00:21:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:21:50
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Oh yeah.
00:21:52
Jo
We went to every game together that whole season, um sitting pretty much in the same seats because the ballot was a lot easier back then. Oh, sorry. It wasn't a ballot, was it? um So sorry.
00:22:03
Jo
we We particularly served. So yeah, anyway, um we used to sit right by the strawberry corner and we just went every game. And it was just the kind of... Overall emotion. And again, obviously, I know we qualified for Champions League that season, which obviously topped it off.
00:22:17
Jo
But it was just an unbelievable season.
00:22:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:22:19
Jo
It just it just was. So that is, strange enough, my second favourite.
00:22:20
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Very good season.
00:22:23
Jo
Yeah, this one now is pushed into first place because of the trophy win. Because, come on, it's undeniable. But yeah, come on.
00:22:28
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Exactly.
00:22:29
Jo
Unbelievable, right?
00:22:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, happy days, 100%.
00:22:30
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Hmm.
00:22:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I think that season we finished um fourth the first time. it It just wasn't expected, was it? We were sitting there going, oh, we imagine if we could get into the Europa League.
00:22:37
Jo
Yeah. That's why...
00:22:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh, that, I think, you wrote yeah, that new Europa Conference League. Oh, we could win that. That could be our first trophy in so many years.
00:22:46
Jo
Yeah.
00:22:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
And to get Champions League and then play PSG, Barcelona, not Barcelona, Borussia Dortmund, NAC Milan, I'm looking ahead to next

Callum Wilson's Future and Squad Changes

00:22:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
season.
00:22:56
Nicola Pringle-Adams
We're going to Barcelona next season, Michael.
00:22:56
Jo
Yeah, we are.
00:22:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
I've got the...
00:22:58
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Yep.
00:22:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
I've got the chant in me head.
00:22:58
Nicola Pringle-Adams
So we're going.
00:22:58
Jo
I hope so.
00:22:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
I've got the chant in me head. ah But yeah, to do all that, it was absolutely fantastic. But obviously at the end of the game yesterday, there was one particular player who was a bit solemn, ah tears in the eyes.
00:23:08
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Oh.
00:23:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
And that was someone that maybe have been a bit harsh on criticising in recent years. over the last year and that is Callum Wilson um it looks like it's brought the end of Callum Wilson's contract there are rumors this morning um I've seen that he will be offered a new contract I'll be honest the way Wilson was at the end of the game yesterday that doesn't tell me he's expecting to get a new contract um I've never cried at extending my career somewhere when I've been offered a new when I've been offered a role at my job I've thought oh thank you so much
00:23:38
Jo
Yeah.
00:23:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
Or maybe that's just me. um But yeah, 49 goals for Newcastle. Shame he couldn't get the 50th. ah He's been a fantastic servant.
00:23:54
Jo
True.
00:23:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
um
00:23:56
Jo
Yes.
00:23:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Summarise Callum Wilson's time at Newcastle and ah in a positive way. Nick.
00:24:03
Nicola Pringle-Adams
um He was the light at a particularly dark time for Newcastle United, wasn't he? Let's be honest. He brought little bit of hope back into us as fans, the team, um and was probably, i don't know, it was my favourite player at one point.
00:24:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:24:20
Nicola Pringle-Adams
He was genuinely my favourite player at one point.
00:24:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:24:23
Nicola Pringle-Adams
um Refreshing and was everything we needed at a really ah bleak, horrible, minging, honking moment. Michael Ashley time.
00:24:33
Jo
Honking.
00:24:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:24:34
Nicola Pringle-Adams
um
00:24:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:24:36
Nicola Pringle-Adams
He was everything we needed. um He's been a great servant to Newcastle United. You can't take that away from him. It is just such a shame as his body's just not capable of keeping up with the sport.
00:24:49
Nicola Pringle-Adams
And it's just such a shame.
00:24:50
Jo
true
00:24:50
Nicola Pringle-Adams
um But yeah, he has been incredible. And obviously, if he Goals on somewhere else or, I don't know, I wish him all the best. um I just to think for Newcastle United, the right thing to do is to move on now because he's just not getting the game time and he's not the player this season that we've seen in the past. um He's way past it.
00:25:12
Jo
yeah
00:25:12
Nicola Pringle-Adams
But yeah.
00:25:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, 100%. To be honest, that it could be a case that Callum Wilson, his body just isn't cut out for Eddie Howe's style, because we've heard from many, many players, Howe pushes you 150%.
00:25:23
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Yeah.
00:25:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
When you reach that older age, it's a lot harder to do that. Hell, I can barely run 10 minutes now, so ah and I'm only 28. Hi, So...
00:25:37
Jo
and you forgot your mind's gone
00:25:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I can only imagine how he feels. My mind's gone. But he could still potentially, I think, do a job for another Premier League team or a top-off champions league team championship team, should I say. What do you think, Joe?
00:25:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
He could do a job at Bodo Glimt.
00:25:51
Jo
Oddly enough, he can go after Barca, he'll be fine.
00:25:52
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Barcelona, go on.
00:25:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
but
00:25:56
Jo
But oddly enough, yeah, when Nick was just talking there, was thinking, um as she was saying, and bang on, that he just isn't cut out for that kind of level and intensity anymore. His body isn't, obviously. um His mind is, because he's a very clever footballer.
00:26:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:26:08
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Very.
00:26:08
Jo
He's a perfect number nine in my eyes, which is a real shame about the injuries, because he's a proper...
00:26:13
Jo
Like a Shearer was a proper number nine, you know, just a proper old school style striker. You'll get those goals.
00:26:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:26:18
Jo
He's got some amazing goals for us and some very important goals for us. And this is where we'll never forget him. So it's not like we're all sitting here going, I'll get him out. He's crap. He's no good. And all that sort of thing. We'll always appreciate what he's done for us.
00:26:29
Jo
And he can actually go on and absolutely agree. can go on and do a job somewhere else because he just maybe has to do it at just a bit of a lower intensity that his body can handle.
00:26:36
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Low intensity.
00:26:38
Jo
Yeah. And he's come on.
00:26:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:26:39
Jo
He's he's not like he's 35, 36 and retirement um I know he's in his 30s, but, you know, he's not at the very end of his career, is he? So I think he's still got some time left in him. And if managed correctly, maybe you can get a bit more game time out of it. But the way we play, it's just no good for Simple as that.
00:26:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, I think you summarised that perfectly, to be honest.
00:26:56
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Agreed.
00:26:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
And i think without Callum Wilson, maybe I'm exaggerating a little bit, but I think we're call without Callum Wilson at Newcastle, none of this actually happens. Sort of what we've had over the last three, four years, because...
00:27:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
22-23 was absolutely unstoppable. But you think, Nick, you mentioned it earlier, ah a shining and light and a very dark tunnel under Mike Ashley and Steve Bruce. And I can think of only a few other players like that. Jose Perez was for me a little bit. um Alain San-Maximin as well at the same time.
00:27:26
Jo
Mm-hmm. Maxie, yeah. Hmm.
00:27:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
But without those two, Wilson and San-Maximin, we'd be in the championship and the Saudis would have ended up buying probably Spurs or Everton.
00:27:36
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Oh.
00:27:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
So... Well, the timing's not right. Well, the timing's right, sorry, for Callum Wilson to move on and get regular first-team football. Hopefully, it's somewhere like Leeds, where I think they'd love him. We can't forget all the fantastic moments he's given us, as you say, um Joe. But he's not the only name leaving on the free transfer. Let's see.
00:27:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
We do have the awards tomorrow, but then we don't really know what we're going to do too much afterwards. So... I do just want to mention Jamal Lewis, John Rudy, Mark Gillespie, J. Turner Cook, Max Thompson and Joe White are all likely to leave the club in the summer for the youngsters. So the youngsters, it's an exciting new chapter.
00:28:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
But for ah Lewis, Rudy and Gillespie, I've got no idea what's next for them. um So that's seven players that are leaving.
00:28:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think there's going to be more. And what I want you to do to end the episode, and I'm going to start with who looks the most terrified.
00:28:28
Jo
I do.
00:28:31
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Oh, no, don't.
00:28:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Nicola it is.
00:28:34
Jo
Nick.
00:28:35
Nicola Pringle-Adams
I'm not very good at this.
00:28:35
Jo
Nick, I know the glasses have been removed.
00:28:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
Nicola.
00:28:37
Nicola Pringle-Adams
I'm not very good.
00:28:38
Jo
Go over it.
00:28:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
Nicola, give me one more player that you believe will leave Newcastle United this summer and not see our best Champions League campaign of all time.
00:28:49
Nicola Pringle-Adams
ah Joe Willock.
00:28:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
I thought you weren't very good at this.
00:28:51
Jo
Good shout. I know.
00:28:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
To be honest, I agree.
00:28:53
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Sorry.
00:28:53
Jo
Good shout.
00:28:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
Crack and enter.
00:28:55
Jo
Yeah.
00:28:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Joe, what do you, do you give me one as well?
00:28:56
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Yeah, Joe Willock.
00:28:58
Jo
I was going to go for Willa got bonds. So because she said, well, it'll be slightly different. Go bonds. Um, because I don't even want to think about the fact that it could be like to ease.
00:29:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
All right, there we go.
00:29:06
Jo
Like if someone comes in with 140 million pound bid or something,
00:29:08
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Wow. Mm.
00:29:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
thats that's the That's the interesting thing. Liverpool are apparently going for this Florian Verts from Bayer Leverkusen, great player, not really the number nine that they're they're after, but there's rumours of that being £150 million.
00:29:12
Jo
isn't it?
00:29:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
If you've got that, why aren't you going for Alexander-Izac?
00:29:24
Jo
Wow.
00:29:25
Nicola Pringle-Adams
wow
00:29:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Or have they been told that Alexander-Izac is worth more than £150 million?
00:29:27
Jo
Yeah.
00:29:32
Jo
Yeah.
00:29:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
because it wouldn't surprise me.
00:29:32
Jo
Or it's just not happening in full stop.
00:29:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:29:35
Jo
Yeah, exactly.
00:29:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
alex Alexander Izak is staying at Newcastle United. You've heard it here first. And we're off to the Champions League. That's all from us. We've got the awards ceremony tomorrow ah where we'll go through and say ah who we think the best players have been.
00:29:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm also going to check back into one of our original episodes and see what our original predictions were and see how right or wrong ah we all were.
00:29:55
Nicola Pringle-Adams
there's two of them
00:29:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
You got two correct, did you? What saying?
00:30:00
Nicola Pringle-Adams
no there's two of them episodes i'm saying we did it in two separate ones same ah guys i think i said that um oh god what's his name lloyd kelly was gonna be so i think eddie howe's gonna do wonders with him oh he did wonders with he sent him away
00:30:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh, yeah.
00:30:03
Jo
I can't remember who I said, so I'm actually interested to listen back.
00:30:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:30:12
Jo
Oh, you did. You did, Nick. You're right, because I think we laughed at you at the time. Bless you.
00:30:18
Jo
Mm-hmm. You did.
00:30:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hey, to be fair, that's a signing of the winter by Juventus.
00:30:20
Jo
We got some decent cash for him, man. It's great. Yeah.
00:30:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
They want rid of him.
00:30:24
Jo
Yeah.
00:30:25
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Oh, no, yeah.
00:30:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
and But for more for more fantastic predictions like that, and more wrong predictions like mine, because I know exactly what mine were, and they were dreadful in comparison.
00:30:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, chat back tomorrow. For now, we'll see later.
