Post-Match Thoughts on Arsenal vs Newcastle

00:00:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello ladies and gentlemen and welcome back to the Daily Newcastle Podcast. My name is Michael Grahamstone. Unfortunately, we've been unable to get a team together for the pod this evening.
00:00:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
So I've just jumped on to give my initial thoughts on the game. and Obviously, the game in question is Arsenal 1, Newcastle United 0. nil Which obviously means that Arsenal have confirmed their Champions League spot and Newcastle will have to when Well, maybe not win, but very likely have to win

Lineup Changes and Defensive Strategy

00:00:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
at St. James' Park against Everton next weekend.
00:00:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
But going into the game, there were obviously two bits of news that were massive. The first Sven Botman was deemed fit. Obviously, see it was all over Twitter x or Excel, whatever, um saying that Botman had travelled.
00:00:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Clearly, whoever was posting that news didn't say anything about Alexander Izak because nobody knew that was happening. um but yeah i'd i'd seen the notification about the lineup i checked my phone and i was like oh okay i'll see who's playing sven botman's in there okay absolutely fine looks unchanged happy days and then i saw it was five at the back happy man and then 20 minutes later or so i think it was kev who put it in our oh um gsbn group chat no alexander isak and i thought hang on
00:01:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
There's no way I've missed that. But yeah, alex Alexander Izak missing with an injury.

Sven Botman's Defensive Role

00:01:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Now, to be honest, we've spoke numerous times on this podcast about Alexander Izak and injuries and how we didn't think he was 100% fit. So it makes sense ah that something was bothering him today.
00:01:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
um But back to Sven Botman, I thought you know five at the back for Newcastle against Arsenal. It's worked before. Great idea. Great tactic. And Sven Botman's the Rolls Royce for a reason. Am I right?
00:02:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And to be honest, for what it's worth, I thought the defence had pretty good game today. um Need to be alert next weekend. Very different game, very different opposition. We're definitely going to have a lot more of the ball than we did today, um or at least for the first 60 minutes. We did pick up a bit more on possession later in the game, but, you know, it wasn't great, was it?

Wilson's Mixed Performance

00:02:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
um But second bit of news, obviously, Izak was missing. um I thought Gordon was going to play false nine until I'd seen the lineup. um Or should I say the rest of the lineup? Clearly, I'd skimmed the top half of it and thought so everything was absolutely fine. I didn't know Wilson was playing. I thought, oh, Gordon false nine. We'll have Murphy on the right, Barnes on the left. I'm looking forward to this.
00:02:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
um But no, Callum Wilson back on the team sheet, ah starting, which hopefully, um it's pretty harsh of me to say this, I think, but hopefully his last start for Newcastle United.
00:03:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Because to be honest, for 30 minutes, Wilson was decent. He got himself a bout. um His first touch wasn't really what we expected, but it was arguably the best 30 minutes we've seen from him since he came back from injury, um unfortunately, after that.
00:03:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
it was a bit quiet. And I think that coincided with Newcastle United sort of lowering the tempo of their game as well. um But yeah,
00:03:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
Going into the game, I think we knew it was going to be tough. I think, obviously, West Ham couldn't do us any favours against Nottingham Forest, ah who, by the way, it probably wouldn't change the game.
00:03:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
um But their second goal is 100% offside. I don't care what anybody says from what we've seen in the Premier League this season. That was offside.
00:03:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. the dynamic of the game would have come been completely different. So we can't say Bowen's goal would have been an equaliser, et cetera. Um, but the second goal is offside. Dominguez is practically touching the defender who would challenge Milenkovic for the ball.
00:04:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
But these things tend to balance themselves out during the season.

Newcastle's Strong Start and Arsenal's Defense

00:04:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm just still annoyed because we've seen similar go against Newcastle. Carabao Cup final for one. Bruno Gormárez, obviously different sort of situation.
00:04:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
But offside when not involved in play, sounds familiar. um But let me know your thoughts on that one because, yeah, for me, Forest got a way worn there. But, as say, balances itself out over the season. and But yeah, into the first half, um i have to say,
00:04:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
I thought we were absolutely fantastic for the first 30 minutes in every area but our finishing. It's like you'd got a team on Football Manager and you changed all of their stats to 20 except from finishing and composure, um which, you know, unfortunately didn't do us any good.
00:05:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
um But Davaraya made some fantastic saves. The first, I believe, was from Bruno, looking to curl it in the bottom corner while...

Goalkeeper Highlights: Pope and Davaraya

00:05:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
Obviously, well, not obviously, but if he just smashes it low and hard, Raya probably doesn't have the time to move, but he preempts it so well.
00:05:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
And it is a great save. So I don't think you can blame Bruno for that one. It's just fantastic save. But to be honest, the best save of the game might actually come from Nick Pope. um Saka puts in a delightful corner and it's it's met by unnamed footballer 31 who rises pretty well and his has stopped by the the sheer reflexes of Nick Pope.
00:05:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Absolutely excellent save. And you wouldn't think that um both teams are looking to replace their goalkeepers in the summer, would you? Because Raya and Pope may be two of the best players on the pitch today.
00:05:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. Actually, I'm going to take that statement back about the best save. It was probably Ryaz from Barnes. um The deflected shot from Barnes' run from the halfway line um deflects off the defender, and it's going into the bottom corner. He does fantastically tip it ti wide.
00:06:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Excellent goalkeeping. um It is a shame about his distribution because he could be one of the best keepers in the world, um but his distribution isn't fantastic. um I could be talking about David Raya or Nick Pope there, really, but I am talking about the Spaniard on this occasion.
00:06:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then, obviously, Dan Byrne forces Raya in another save as well from a ah corner. He was a nuisance from set pieces all afternoon. um But then after about 30 minutes...

Arsenal's Goal and Match Conclusion

00:06:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
We don't really look like causing Arsenal any problems. I'm not sure what happened um at 30 minutes. um There was nothing evident or clear that I saw, ah but it was just a clear change in the tempo of the game. And Arsenal weren't great in the first half, but second half, they really stepped it up.
00:06:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I think the annoying thing is, is that when Arsenal do get their goal, It actually comes from a Newcastle United mistake from Anthony Gordon, who gives the ball away. He tries to do too much, but to be honest, he didn't really have that much help around him, or good help, should I say.
00:07:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's all well and good being there, but actually being an option and you know providing an outlet... It's very different than you know just simply being there. But yeah, Gordon gives the ball away. I've seen a lot of people discussing his attitude um during the game as well. His performances certainly haven't been as good as they were at the start the season.
00:07:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
What I would say with that is we had 18 months of absolutely fantastic Anthony Gordon. We've had two or three where he's not been up to par. Let's give him next season and let's give him the benefit of the doubt because he's there's a fantastic player in there.
00:07:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
And to be honest, he wasn't the only player who I saw maybe lacking in effort um a bit today. um To be honest, that could apply to any of the three wingers. actually think Gordon put in maybe put in the most effort, but I will get to that in the next part. I'll tell you what, ah there wasn't really much to talk about for the rest of the game except from the scrap at the end, which,
00:08:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
It was summed up by Gordon and Rice having a laugh, really, at the end of it. um yeah Arsenal won, obviously 1-0.

Player Ratings: Focus on Nick Pope

00:09:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
um But at this point, I do want to go into player ratings for the game, which is something we don't typically do on this podcast, and it's not something that I normally do.
00:09:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
um But I thought it was one of those where... I don't know if I'm being too harsh on players. And instead of going through a full detailed script of, oh, well this is why this guy was brilliant. This is why this guy was terrible.
00:10:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
I just thought I'd go through a couple of points. And then if I'm being horrible and really harsh on a player, you can let me know. And if you think I'm spot on, Let me know because my ego can always do with a little bit of a boost.
00:10:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
um But I will start back to front, as you always do. I'll start with Nick Pope. ah I'm going to give Nick Pope 6.5. I thought his shot stopping was fantastic. There's nothing really can do about the Rice goal.
00:10:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
um But the reason it's only a 6.5 is his distribution is so poor. And it's it really is a shame because when you look at him as a sweeper-keeper, And I know the Liverpool incident before the cup final a few years back sticks in everybody's head.
00:10:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
But 90% of the time, he is a fantastic sweeper-keeper. The only issue is, is when the ball actually gets to his feet, it goes out of St. James' Park, or in this case, the Emirates, out of ye the United Kingdom, out of Europe, and somehow finds its way in the middle of space.
00:11:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's absolutely horrendous.

Murphy's Inconsistency

00:11:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
distribution and it's it's really unfortunate because nick pobe is such a good shot stopper um but yeah 6.5 this time for me um jacob murphy will go next um i'll be honest i was quite disappointed by jacob murphy today um he is a very marmite player in regards to performances he's either absolutely fantastic or he's one of those that's just a bit He'll get the goal, he'll get the assist, but performances don't usually match the goal and the assist ratio. And the goal and assist ratio is fantastic.
00:11:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
I love Jacob Murphy as a player, but games like today really distinguish...
00:11:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
his level, should I say. Um, but I thought he was really ineffective from an attacking standpoint defensively. When you think you're asking a right winger to play a right back, he did okay.
00:12:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Um, but Trossard and Martinelli both got the better of him, um, early in the first half and then a little bit in the second as well. And honestly, Trossard and Martinelli weren't good either. So I think it's, yeah, I can't give Murphy any higher than a six.
00:12:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
Um, For the back three, where should I start? um We'll go in the centre, just because that's weird.

Botman's Consistent Performance

00:12:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
Sven Bottmann. I thought he defended excellently.
00:12:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
Ultimately, could have had an assist to his name. ah With a run from his own half into the Arsenal half in the first half, slides it through Fartino, Livramento and I don't know if the miss or the comfortable save, should I say, from Raya in the first half from Livermando early on, maybe that's affected his confidence, but he slows down, tries to wait for Callum Wilson to to overlap.
00:13:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
And yeah...
00:13:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
We call Bottman the Rolls-Royce, but realistically, Wilson was moving like a dayatsu from the 1960s. wasn't good at all in those kind of positions, and it's it is unfortunate, but I'm not going to let that dictate or have any impact on Bottman's rating. He was very good today, 7.5 from me.
00:13:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Fabian Shaw, again, didn't have a bad game at all. um Defensively, very solid. And I don't believe there might have been one off the top my head where he tries to play that cross field ball and it doesn't pay off.
00:13:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
um But his passing was pretty decent today. um But the question I do have to ask is, when we have Italy's first choice free kick taker on the pitch,
00:13:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
why do we ask the man who's not even maybe be Switzerland's third choice? Uh, I might be wrong. Um, he's definitely not first choice and I don't think he's second.
00:14:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
Um, so maybe third, maybe worse. Why do we pick him, uh, to take a set piece, a shot late in the game and a good position when we have Sandra Tonali on the pitch who takes these kinds of free kicks for, for Italy all the time.
00:14:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Um, Frustrating, but again, not going to let that dictate the rating. Overall, over 90 minutes, very good. Seven. um That leaves Dan Byrne. Solid defensive performance again, to be honest. He he wasn't great. He wasn't bad.
00:14:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Could have had a goal. Great stop by David Raya. Saka got the better of him a couple of times after... Tino Livramento had bombed forward, so then Byrne was left one-on-one with Saka, which, if we remember the four one ah where Willick scored the consolation a few years back, Byrne and Saka are against each other as a a recipe for disaster.
00:15:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
But Byrne did well. He coped quite well to, that I'd say, 6.5, not quite as good as the other two, um but still had a solid game. And then the final defender, that is Tino Livramento, who...
00:15:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
Is Tino Livramento, by the way, better on the left than he is on the right? Because I swear when we signed him, he'd never played maybe he played twice on the left.
00:15:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And i remember I remember people saying when we signed him, oh, well, he played on the left at youth level, so Kieran Trippier will play right back, and then Livramento will play left back. And I remember looking and going...
00:15:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
that There's no chance that's happening, but he's fantastic on the left, at least defensively. um
00:15:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
Offensively, he kind of worries me a little bit with the end product. um His energy is fantastic, but his end product isn't quite there. um Reminds me a little bit of um ah It's probably a bit harsher of me to say Davide Santon, um who absolutely fantastic player.
00:16:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
Defensively, i would say Livermetto is a little bit better, um but great energy, but end product just isn't really quite there. um But yeah, today he was pretty good against Bakai Osaka.
00:16:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
He had a handle on him just like he did Mohamed Salah. On these big occasions, Tino Livermento does tend to thrive. I am going to give a 7. um Probably harsh not to give him a 7.5. To be honest, he had a really good game.

Midfield Impact: Bruno and Tonali

00:16:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then into the two in midfield, you think a midfield two against an Arsenal three, you always expect the two to struggle.
00:16:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And that didn't happen today at all. I thought Bruno and Tonali were but fantastic. And I thought... The first 30 minutes when we were the better team, it was because primarily of Bruno Gamares grabbing the game by the scruff of the neck and being the best player on the pitch. um In the second, I think Arsenal won the midfield battle comfortably.
00:17:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And I think... The reason Arsenal ended up winning the game is because of that change at half-time, by the way, where Saliba comes off, Calafiori comes on.
00:17:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
And while Saliba's a brilliant defender, he wouldn't have had to do that much defending in the second half. Calafiori's much better with the ball at his feet, which ultimately meant another player coming forward, and it was practically four versus two.
00:17:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah in that central midfield. And that's why Arsenal had such a dominating start to that second half. But a good performance ah from Bruno, should I say. um And to be honest, it could have been a lot worse if it wasn't for him and Sonali in central midfield cleaning up and giving Newcastle an outlet more often than not because those two were above and beyond a lot of players today. And I don't i think if those two were missing...
00:18:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
it would have been worse than having Isaac missing today. Um, but yeah, Bruno 7.5 for me, uh, to gnarly was all tidy as always. I'd say he was a little less effective and I don't know if that's just because I'm comparing them to Bruno G who had a lot more of the ball, uh, in comparison to tonaline.
00:18:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
Usually it's the reverse. Um,
00:18:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's tough one. I'm going to give Tenali seven just because I do think there should be a little bit of difference between him and Bruno. um And I can't give an eight to Bruno when we've lost the game because that's tin pot Sunderland behavior.
00:18:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I'm not having that. um And then finish off the front three, um not a good day for them at all. Um, We'll start with Harvey Barnes.
00:18:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm maybe going to be a bit harsh here. We'll give him a 5.5. I know you'll be sitting there saying, oh, well, he was unlucky not to score in the first half. Good run in the deflection. ah But without the deflection, it's probably bread and butter for Raya.
00:19:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
um He was largely ineffective throughout the game. um And then when he did end up getting shots away, they ended up in row Z, Z plus. I imagine there's something like that at the top of the Emirates. I don't know. I've never been.
00:19:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
um But if there was ZZ+, Barnes probably cleared it with a lot of his shots today, unfortunately. um I really don't like that combination of Harvey Barnes and Jacob Murphy on the right.
00:19:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm not sure why. I think maybe both are not the same player, but they're both defensively focused players um but you'd call them a right midfielder rather than a winger or ah fullback or and i think maybe because they're similar players focused on that distribution um rather than getting down the line and they do help back the fullback maybe it's just having two square pegs in two circular holes
00:20:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
um it doesn't really work but it it's how i'm feeling about the two and i'm not sure i like it um i do want kieran tripia back and who would have thought we'd be saying that six months ago um but actually i've always been a fan of tripia but i do have to say for example when kev said he'd be player of the season i i've i've I gave him grief for about three months and then Trippier turned around and been absolutely fantastic. And we did miss him today. So I can only apologize to Kev for that. I'm sorry, buddy.
00:20:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
You were right. um But yeah, back onto the topic at hand. And that's, um I'm going away from it because I don't really want to talk about Wilson and Gordon who both had poor games.
00:20:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
Wilson decent for the half an hour, um missing for the rest. Who knows? Maybe if we keep him for another season, we can get 60 minutes of a good performance.
00:21:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm being really harsh, and I really like Callum Wilson as a player. I just think his body's gave up on him, and it's just not up to scratch, unfortunately, ah for the level that Newcastle want to be at.
00:21:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think if we're still in that relegation battle, Callum Wilson probably has 75 goals for us by now because Izak's obviously not there. um But yeah, I think he'd still be a useful player.
00:21:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
so And there's no surprise that leads are linked for that reason. um But yeah, if Izak isn't fit next season, surely Newcastle start Osula instead of Callum Wilson.

Substitutes' Impact

00:21:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then to finish off, well, before I go into the subs, I won't give too much detail on the subs, so just give a ah number. um But then Anthony Gordon. Yeah, it wasn't his best day. um But I will say, as an attacker, he carried the ball forward and often ran the channels after long, long loose balls a lot better than Barnes did.
00:22:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
He was more involved in the game than Wilson. He was more involved than Murphy. know Murphy was technically right wing back. um But in regards to our attacking players... oh Gordon, up until the era, was probably the best on the pitch.
00:22:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
um I will say I'm not sure what happened at halftime because his head seemed to drop. um And I don't know if maybe there's an attitude issue there um like we saw at Everton.
00:22:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's been mentioned so many times at Newcastle that I don't want to think it's a thing. And to be honest, until something comes out, I'm never going to think it. um As I mentioned earlier, Gordon's been fantastic for us for 18 months, couple of poor months.
00:22:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
Let's put it behind her, focus on next weekend. um But yeah, we had a poor game today. He tried do too much for the the Arsenal goal, obviously got dispossessed and yeah, we were were punished for it. But it happens.
00:23:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's won us more points than he's lost us. And for now, because there's only a week left of the season, I'm happy to put it any anger and any anguishman anguish, anguish, angishment, any of that on hold. I'll even make up words to describe how I'm feeling.
00:23:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
Uh, I'll put it all on hold for a week just to make sure good vibes going into that final game at St. James's park. Um, for the subs, I'll give Miley a six.
00:23:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
Um, I didn't think he did anything fantastic, but when we had a couldn't much more control of the game, I did think that was one of the, he was one of the reasons why he came on in that triple substitution, Miley or Sula, uh, and craft. And I thought, you know, that did change the game a little bit.
00:23:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
Um, Miley got on the ball a little bit more than the other two. um Of course he did. He's central midfielder. But I thought he played all right. ah the He certainly doesn't shy away from the occasion.
00:24:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
um I just want him to get more minutes. And then speaking of all minutes, obviously, Osula. um He puts in a brilliant cross about five, ten minutes after coming on. And you almost want Alexander Rezac in there just to head it in. but ah yeah In fact, you want William Osula there to just head it in.
00:24:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
But, yeah, he was... I do get headless chicken vibes, um particularly when he does the... slightly awkward looking step overs which to be honest do you tend to get them where he wants to be um so ah how many times do we see winger try and take on the man and lose the ball Sula doesn't do that very often so I would I do want to see him play i think we saw enough of him to say or Sula should be above Wilson in the pecking order
00:24:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then, yeah, he wasn't great, but I'll give him a six as well because he did so much more coming on than most players in that attacking third. Emil Crafts, I'll just go with a simple 5.5. think was solid, but yes the first thing he does when after coming on is pick up the first yellow card of the game. He lets Martinelli in behind him.
00:25:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
um could have been uh if that free kick was a little bit better obviously you know you could say anything it could be 2-0 but yeah wasn't a great performance when he came on he was solid but you i was worried for the rest of that half that he was going to pick up the red and i think if martin elliot uh was a little better he probably would have uh and then joe willock um Can't really give him too much of a rating because he didn't really have that much time on the pitch.
00:25:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
um But I'll give him a 5.5. He wasn't great. um There was a moment he cuts in in the second halfway. Could have done a little bit better.
00:26:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
He isn't the tidiest player in centre midfield, which, to be honest, makes him a good replacement for Joe Linton. um But he lacks that physical presence that Joe Linton has. And, Yeah, you can really tell when Willock comes in for any of those midfielders. And then even on the left wing, like he did today, it wasn't very good.
00:26:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
But there are my ratings for the game. ah Tomorrow, I'll be joined by ian and Joe to give a full review of the game. Obviously, it's the last full week um of the season, which might mean that it's the last full week of the Daily Newcastle podcast for this season.
00:26:40
