Introduction and Host's Return

00:00:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome to the Daily Newcastle podcast. You are um being hosted by me, Nicola. Again, I feel like it has been a while since I've been on one of these because i'm and I like to go to bed early and the boys like to record late, so I'm never normally on.
00:00:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
But I'm up early.
00:00:28
Michael
Late is eight o'clock, by the way.
00:00:29
Michael
At the latest.
00:00:30
Iain
I am great, thank you Nicola.
00:00:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, but I'm up early. i am up early. Sorry.
00:00:34
Michael
Kev's newborn goes to bed later than you.
00:00:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Sorry.
00:00:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah ah no I know, I know, honestly, I'm pathetic.

Guest Introduction and Banter

00:00:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
And that kindly introduces me to my first guest, Michael, who has stepped in for Kev this evening. How are you? Good.
00:00:47
Michael
I'm doing well, thank you very much. How about you?
00:00:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yep, I am good. And then my second guest, Ian. How are you? Just staring.
00:00:56
Iain
bre i am great thank you nichla and Not quite as full of Sunday roast and wine as you allegedly are, of course. I'll save mine for later on.
00:01:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I did go for a carvery. Yeah, I did go for a carvery. It was lovely.

Newcastle vs. Brighton Game Analysis

00:01:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
We are recording after the Newcastle and Brighton game this afternoon.
00:01:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
So it's a Sunday. So as Connie just said, had a Sunday roast this afternoon. But when you listen to this, it will be Monday. we'll have forgotten all about the Brighton game, won't we? Everyone nod.
00:01:25
Michael
Well, not a lot to remember to be honest.
00:01:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
Everyone nod.
00:01:26
Iain
We'll be focused on next week for sure.
00:01:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
No. Right, let's just delve straight into it. So we all spoke during the week on our different recordings. I spoke with Jo about how important the last four games are of the season. And in true Newcastle style, they absolutely fold like deck chairs against Brian.
00:01:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:01:49
Michael
A
00:01:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, that's being mean. It was a game of what I thought of two teams that didn't do much, to be honest.
00:01:53
Michael
little bit.
00:01:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
But I will just come to you both and just simply ask, how are you feeling about that result? Obviously, it was a draw, 1-1. So we didn't lose any points, but we also only gained one. So, Ian, I will come to you first.
00:02:12
Iain
Yeah, I was quite disappointed watching it. I didn't think we... I don't think we attacked it with the sort of zest that I wanted to. We sort of stood off them a little bit. And as they were intent once they'd scored, standing off us to make sure that they didn't concede, it meant it was a really...
00:02:30
Iain
We had loads of the ball and we made some great passes and most of it was in front of there their team.
00:02:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:02:35
Iain
So we didn't seem to do very much. There was a little bit of spice added with a few... were penalties that were awarded, which even from my couch you could see weren't penalties, but, you know, VAR spent a minute or two deciding they weren't, ah until the last one, when suddenly it switched into a basketball game. That was that was clearly a penalty.
00:02:54
Iain
So, I was really disappointed. i thought we had the momentum. I really wanted three points, because I think the away game at Arsenal is harder than this one, and having watched Chelsea dismantle Liverpool this afternoon, i think the home game against Chelsea is going to be harder than this one.
00:03:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:03:02
Michael
Yeah.
00:03:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
I know.
00:03:09
Iain
But, anyway... I'm trying to to take the positive and the bright side, and that, a one-all draw, is actually our best ever result against Brighton in the Premier League at their place, because we've never beaten them. I'm guessing a one-all draw must be better than the 0-0 draw that we had before.
00:03:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm-hmm.
00:03:27
Iain
and So, no, look it's a bogey ground.
00:03:30
Iain
We could easily, I mean, you know, 85 minutes in, still trailing 1-0, two penalties overturned by VAR. I'm thinking it's a typical Newcastle 1-0 loss to a team that you shouldn't lose to.
00:03:40
Iain
So I'm absolutely delighted that we got that equaliser in the 89th minute and disappointed we couldn't get a winner in the last 10 minutes that were added for for injuries and VAR stoppages, etc.
00:03:54
Iain
But really, it's a point that I'm glad we've got because we could easily have ended up with none.
00:03:55
Michael
Yeah.
00:03:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. Yeah. I've got to be honest. I thought at one point it was obviously we had the two penalty decisions overturned, which quite rightly, they definitely weren't penalties. Then i'm obviously their defender got away with ah a a red
00:04:10
Iain
Thank
00:04:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
we'll touch on that in a minute. And I just thought there's no way it's one of these days when Newcastle are just not going to score. then obviously they did. and So thankfully I'm on the same page as you and I'm happy that we got the point in the end because I did think it was a game of where two teams just weren't doing much points. So, yeah, I definitely feel the same. Michael, do you agree, disagree? Yeah.
00:04:35
Michael
Yeah, I agree that I'm delighted with the point.
00:04:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:04:39
Michael
think the Amex is a a tricky place to go, although it hasn't been as tricky this year for some teams as it has others, but it's always difficult for us.
00:04:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm-hmm.
00:04:47
Michael
don't think many of us expected to walk over Brighton.
00:04:47
Iain
And
00:04:49
Michael
We know they're a tough team. They're in the fight for Europe as well.
00:04:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. Mm-hmm.
00:04:53
Michael
am... i am disappointed with the performance, if I'm honest. you said, there was very little there, and I think there's very few players who had a good game. Tenali, all the build-up this week was, oh, have we ever seen Sandra Tenali have a bad game?
00:05:09
Michael
Well, now you have. Bruno, still the best midfielder in the world.
00:05:11
Iain
in
00:05:13
Michael
Well, he wasn't today. Joel Willock got a lot of stick today as well, and I actually thought he was the better of the three midfielders. At least tried to make something happen. they're All round for it, wasn't a great day, but the result, great.
00:05:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:05:27
Michael
If you can play poorly and still get a good result, it's a sign of a good team. Move on to Chelsea. I'm happy.
00:05:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
you're happy you're good okay yeah we'll forget about this result
00:05:35
Michael
Yeah. Convincing myself, I'm happy. Yeah.

Team Performance and Player Selection

00:05:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
tomorrow this could be please yes
00:05:41
Iain
umm Sorry, Nicola, can I just add that i'm only happy I'm only happy for us to get our point having watched the game start and unfold because I listened earlier in the week to the guy from the Brighton Argus and Telegraph or whatever it's called, talked to the Newcastle Chronicle man and he predicted that Newcastle would win 3-1.
00:05:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
please
00:05:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
yes
00:06:02
Iain
He didn't think that Brighton had a prayer.
00:06:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's what protected.
00:06:05
Iain
It's his wildest dreams. He was hoping it would end up as a one-all draw. because Brighton have been in such poor form, they've been so leaky in defence, they had so many players out injured, still today, no Matoma I don't think was there, and this development wasn't fit enough to get start, so I i know we've never won there, but I thought like it at the Arsenal game, like at Manchester United, it is a season where we
00:06:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:06:14
Michael
Yeah.
00:06:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
Nope.
00:06:38
Iain
rewrite the record books and we don't get hung up on these long-standing records. So I really expect us to win today.
00:06:42
Michael
yeah
00:06:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:06:44
Iain
So I am disappointed with that result like Michael is, but having watched the game unfold, I'm absolutely delighted that we've escaped with a point from it.
00:06:53
Michael
Yeah, absolutely.
00:06:54
Iain
A really important point given that City and Chelsea have both won,
00:06:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah ah No, no. Yeah, we're going to touch on the City and Chelsea results probably in the second part. Because, yeah, they haven't really gone our way at all, have they?
00:07:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
let's just focus on the lineup first obviously before the games unfolded um me and joe the other day we were speaking about who we expected to obviously come in and replace obviously um big big joe because obviously he's out with um an injury and i don't know if we're gonna see him by the end of the season probably not but and we were discussing about who do we think he's going to pick do we think it's gonna be joe will it do we think it's gonna lewis miley blah blah were you guys surprised to see that joe will it was the one to be picked I actually originally said that I'd like to see him start.
00:07:38
Iain
Thank
00:07:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
Michael, did you think we would see someone different or were <unk>re not surprised to see Joe Willock?
00:07:45
Michael
was I was ah ah was Joe Willock all the way. I mean, I would love to see Lewis Miley start.
00:07:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Me too. Yeah.
00:07:51
Michael
I think out the three, he's the one that's going to be there for the longest. He's got a really good future with Newcastle. But like for like, Joe Linton...
00:07:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:07:59
Michael
When you're in these final four games and you can't really afford to take risks, you need the most like-for-like player. And that is, unfortunately, who a player that hasn't been on form this season, Joe Willock.
00:08:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:08:11
Michael
I do think he was a lot better today than what we've seen previously. thought he was one of the few players that decided to drive with the ball and actually put the defence under pressure at Brighton.
00:08:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:08:23
Michael
ah ah but But we can get into that later. I think, yeah, I wasn't surprised to see Joe Willock at all. you
00:08:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah Ian, I know you're a massive Lewis Miley fan.
00:08:32
Iain
Now, I am a massive Lewis Mally fan. I wasn't surprised that Wilk started because he was first pick up last week. And i to be honest, though,
00:08:43
Iain
Joe Willock is not light for light for Joe Lin. Joe Willock is much more pacey, dynamic, up the wing. He's far more an attacking winger, left-sided player, than he is shoring up the defence on the left-hand side. Lewis Miley is far more suited to that, because we've seen him play a holding midfield role in the Champions League games when everybody was out injured.
00:09:10
Iain
I don't know if it might be a little bit of curveball to throw into a game like that, to put Lewis Miley and make him play as the six and give Tenali a little bit more freedom to go forward with Bruno. And that could completely bamboozle what Brighton were thinking we were going to line up with. Because we've become very predictable when we pick the same team week after week after week, however good these players are.
00:09:35
Iain
I just think, you know, us mixing it up a little bit, could just Even if it takes them 10 minutes to adjust, we could be two up after those 10 minutes.
00:09:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:09:43
Iain
So yeah, I think i think that Miley can play a whole in midfield role and let Tonali burst forward a little bit. In patches, why not try that?
00:09:54
Iain
It was so obvious what was going to happen. Willock was well marked, Tonali was well marshalled. That's why Tonali and Bruno didn't really get much of a kick. They did the same job on them at home as they did when They played them at played them at St.
00:10:07
Iain
James's Park, which was to get really tight on them and push them over all of the time.
00:10:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:10:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, it's a difficult...
00:10:14
Iain
Disrupt the game.
00:10:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's a difficult player to replace, if you like, Joe Linton, because he's one of them players that just...
00:10:20
Iain
Yeah.
00:10:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, all the pundits say it, like, particularly... I mean, obviously, we're going back a month or two now, but on the Carabao Cup final day, everyone was saying he must be an absolute menace to play against because he's just everywhere. He's everywhere on the pitch.
00:10:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
Like, no one does it like Big Joe, does he, sometimes? So he's just definitely a difficult player to replace. Let me break here for the first ad, and then we'll talk about... bit more about missing joelynn the second part so just gonna play our sponsor by by anik which is read out by the lovely ken
00:11:08
Iain
Thank you.
00:11:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
but if anyone's watching, but Michael and Ian have just been playing a game of charades while that advert's being read out.
00:11:37
Iain
I don't
00:11:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
I will put the web link into the show description notes so you guys can check out Bionique. And we're back for part two. Bravo.
00:11:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
So I don't know if you guys, you guys follow like you know Twitter? and But it's now X, isn't it? Yeah.
00:11:56
Michael
Yes.
00:11:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
but yeah I know you do Michael because i I see you on it quite a lot but if anyone that was banging on about Newcastle finishing second over the weekend before the Brighton game if you could all just deactivate your accounts that would be absolutely fantastic because that hasn't gone way Ian what's happened to our run to be in second
00:12:01
Michael
Yikes.
00:12:15
Iain
Well, do you know what? I still think we'll finish ahead of Arsenal. I just think Man City will finish ahead of us.
00:12:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah yeah well
00:12:20
Iain
Yeah. That draw means Man City have got a point ahead of us instead of us being a point ahead of them. But I think Arsenal will lose at Liverpool and I think we'll beat them. And, you know, yeah, they'll pick three points up against Southampton.
00:12:32
Iain
But I think we'll i think we'll finish a ahead of them. I do.
00:12:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh, I wish I could be this confident.
00:12:39
Iain
But think City will win. I think City will win all of their next three games and be a point ahead of us at the end.
00:12:43
Michael
Yeah.
00:12:45
Iain
I don't mind, really.
00:12:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
Okay.
00:12:47
Iain
You know, I never could have cashed out my £400 winnings for finishing second for any more than £20. So I'm happy to have let it run.
00:12:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
Fair.
00:12:55
Iain
And it's still on, you know. The Man City might be decimated by bubonic plague or something for the next game um and not be very well and lose.
00:12:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, it is.
00:13:05
Iain
Who knows?
00:13:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
True. Right. Let's just touch on, just spoke about Big Joe being missing. Let's be honest. He's probably not going to be, he's been recommended to rest. Hasn't he?
00:13:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
His rest, he's got a knee problem. We don't know how serious it is.
00:13:19
Michael
Yeah.
00:13:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
And obviously now we've only got three games left. So the chances of us seeing him again, I don't know, but obviously Eddie Howe said, we're just going to take it game a week at a time. And, It's games like today, in my opinion, and for all of that counts, is where obviously it's players like Big Joe that we miss.
00:13:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
And you can obviously evidently see it on the pitch. So my question to you guys is, how do we now approach the remaining games if Big Joe is missing?
00:13:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
Because I do agree with you guys that Joe Willock did do a good job, but it's still a massive gap for me of where obviously Joey Linton's experience is to obviously...
00:13:55
Iain
Thank you.
00:14:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
the subs, if you like. So Michael, do how, how impactful do you think Joey Linton is being missing to the team? Because for me, it's quite huge.
00:14:09
Michael
Yeah, Big Joe's one of our biggest players, no pun intended. it's it's he's one of those where he's such a unique player that he's really hard to replace.
00:14:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:14:19
Michael
And when I said Joe Willock was like for like, maybe it's most like for like out of the options available. And I think... that's just because of the box-to-box style. And I think you can't change that when you've only got three games remaining, when they're such pivotal games, because you make one tactical tweak and it goes wrong.
00:14:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. Yeah.
00:14:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:14:37
Michael
It could cost you Champions League football at the moment.
00:14:39
Michael
So how's a bit of a sticklefer knowing what he wants to do And yes, he will tweak things. He's not an idiot. He's ah a, he's, I'm not going to say a tactical genius, but he's very good at that side of things. And he overworks himself day and night on weaknesses and strengths.
00:14:55
Michael
So he'll know where we are. He'll know where, what maybe needs to be changed. But I actually think, I actually think it might be the wings where we see any potential change. And we can get to that a bit later, but I do think we don't change anything in midfield going forward. I don't think.
00:15:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
No. Ian, do you agree?
00:15:16
Iain
Well, i agree. i certainly I certainly think the tactics that we use are, I'm saying we're obvious for for Brighton to be able to deal with when we're playing away from home. They work at home.
00:15:28
Iain
Crowd act as the 12th man and they like work at home against everybody. And two of these games coming up are at home. So definitely no changes on that. Away at Arsenal, if you remember, he totally we revamped our tactics to beat them 2-0 in the Carabao Cup semi-final.
00:15:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. Yeah.
00:15:43
Iain
And
00:15:44
Iain
if Is Botman coming back? Is Botman going to be fit for that game? Because we could see three at the back and another tactical masterclass from Eddie Howe to win at Arsenal in a fortnight. I don't know.
00:15:58
Iain
That's the only one where I might consider that he should change his hand and surprise Arteta.
00:16:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
Change. Yeah. We do like upsetting our tattoo, don't we? Hmm.
00:16:08
Iain
We love it.
00:16:08
Michael
Just a little bit.
00:16:08
Iain
Yeah, we love it.
00:16:09
Michael
it's quite fun.
00:16:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
It is. I really want to beat them. I'm going to touch on that game in the last part. But... Oh, forgot my kit.
00:16:17
Iain
Can I just observe at that point, because it works, because they lost they lost to get at home to Bournemouth, didn't they?
00:16:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
Played.
00:16:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Ole Miss.
00:16:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:16:23
Iain
And if live if Liverpool beat them at Liverpool next week, and they lose in Paris to get knocked out of the Champions League just before that, we could inflict their fifth successive loss on them when we turn up to play them at their place.
00:16:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh dear.
00:16:39
Iain
and I don't think Arsenal haven't lost five in a row for don't know how long. They're not Manchester City, are they?
00:16:44
Michael
No.
00:16:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, no, very true.
00:16:45
Michael
And the way Liverpool played today, you wouldn't be surprised if they ended up losing every game from the rest of the season.
00:16:50
Iain
Yeah, I was out with slots. Slot played all of the second string, didn't he?
00:16:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Second team.
00:16:57
Iain
He's having a look to see who's goingnna who's going to be sold, I think.
00:16:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Teams hung over still.
00:16:59
Michael
Yeah, Endo's in there. I mean, there was still Alisson, Trent, Van Dijk, Salah, Jota Gakpo, Van Dijk.
00:17:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
Of all the days where I was rooting for Liverpool just to do with a little bit of a favour, they didn't.
00:17:08
Michael
Still a lot. Yeah, that was never.
00:17:11
Iain
Yeah.
00:17:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
That was great.
00:17:12
Michael
but It's Liverpool.
00:17:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:17:14
Michael
They're never going to do us any favors.
00:17:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
Never. No, I know. Absolutely
00:17:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
Just while we're talking about, ah still obviously focus on the Newcastle-Brighton game. Players like, I don't know, I think I could give Callum Wilson a hard time because he did come close to a second chance. So I will ease off him a little bit. But players like Oshula, what are players like this got to do to get on the pitch? Because we have spoken about this before and I don't understand why, like we have seen him a few times this season, but for me, sometimes Callum Wilson just isn't the answer to come on. I don't know if he's as impactful as what he once was or once.
00:17:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't know. Is Eddie Howe seeing something different in training and to what we're seeing on on the pitch? Because for me, I really want to see Oshula come on. It's a bit like you, you Ian, with Lewis Miley.
00:18:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
You want to see Lewis Miley get more minutes, whereas I want to see Oshula get the experience.
00:18:05
Iain
I want Oscar to get some more minutes as well.
00:18:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I don't understand.
00:18:08
Iain
I just think Eddie has has has years and years and years of trust that has been repaid with Callum Wilson.
00:18:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
True. Yeah.
00:18:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:18:16
Iain
And if he's seen Callum Wilson looking sharp again in training, knowing he's coming back from injuries, but there's not showing very much of that, then he's trusting him to bring him on and thinking, you're going to show it in a game at some point.
00:18:16
Michael
Yeah.
00:18:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:18:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, true.
00:18:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:18:28
Iain
Personally, I just think they take their toll. I don't think he's as fast. I've never seen him make that many sprints, unless he's making lost cause sprints to <unk> close down the goalkeeper and before the goalkeeper clears it, but he gets nowhere near.
00:18:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:18:44
Iain
and
00:18:45
Iain
i don't know. I'd like to see, I think Osceola should be the first change now. Sorry, Callum. and i would like I'd love Callum DeWaltzson to get one goal before the end of the season, so he scores 50 for Newcastle.
00:18:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:18:55
Iain
Then he can be released with a clear conscience, can't he?
00:19:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
A clear conscience. Michael, do you agree?
00:19:04
Michael
I might upset a few people here, but I actually understood Wilson over Osula today.
00:19:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well.
00:19:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm?
00:19:11
Michael
think when you look at the game, Wilson was brought on, they were very much 10 men behind the ball.
00:19:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:19:17
Michael
Osula, when he comes on, I'm not saying he's a headless chicken, but he's very much, very active, very, very much like, I hate to say it because I ridiculed a post for it earlier, but he's a bit like Joe Linton where his touch isn't fantastic, but he gets around the pitch very quickly and he's very strong.
00:19:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:19:37
Michael
But he's more like that in a, in a striker form. what I will say is when you've got 10 men behind the ball, You don't really want to be giving away those silly fouls that eat he does do. And you also need someone who's just a bit more clinical.
00:19:50
Michael
We were getting the ball in and around the box.
00:19:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:19:52
Michael
We just kind of needed someone to have a clinical touch. And that's what Callum Wilson has done for Newcastle for years. it's It's not the player he is now, but...
00:19:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, true.
00:20:02
Michael
In comparison to the last five or six games where he's come on and I've completely agreed with you, Osula should have come on first.
00:20:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:20:09
Michael
Today was the first time where, i mean, i was I was in the pub and Wilson came on it. Every single person in the pub went, oh, and I was there going, oh,
00:20:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
I made that exact noise.
00:20:20
Michael
I actually, and sorry for anyone wearing earphones listening to this, because that can't have been pleasant.
00:20:24
Iain
of
00:20:25
Michael
But I was actually sitting there going, you know what? This is the kind of game where Wilson could actually do something. And I'd be...
00:20:31
Iain
And he didn't, Michael. He didn't. He missed a sitter header, which fortunately he got away with because we got a penalty instead. But that ball from the handball bounced to him three yards out. And his header was so powerful from three yards, the keeper got over and saved it.
00:20:46
Iain
He's a spent force. And I know Osula might look like a bit of a headless chicken, but he scored a fantastic header last week. And he also... a fantastic step over, had a shot.
00:20:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
um its
00:20:56
Iain
We needed a goal. We needed, we needed a goal.
00:21:01
Michael
I'll be honest, I'm surprised both of them didn't come on because I thought, oh, Wilson comes on and then I thought 85th minute, if you' still not you haven't got a goal, take off Bruno because Tonali was still went to do a lot of running.
00:21:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I am.
00:21:15
Michael
I didn't think he was brilliant, Tonali, but he still did a lot running and got a couple of good interceptions, especially when they were trying to break and bring on Osceola then.
00:21:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:21:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:21:23
Michael
So I would have personally brought on both, but I can understand why maybe Eddie didn't.
00:21:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
He didn't.
00:21:28
Michael
But yeah, it's It's the end of an era for Wilson, and probably rightfully so.
00:21:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:21:33
Michael
But yeah, the today was the only time I think I'll ever sit there and go, yeah, Wilson should have come on instead of Osula. It didn't work out, but I understood at the time. And hopefully we see the young man banging a lot more goals for Newcastle, maybe even this season.
00:21:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. I love his unpredictability. I love the fact that he'll just come on and just teams just don't know what to expect because you haven't seen him like play that much. So I just love him. Like I love his unpredictability.
00:21:58
Michael
Yeah.
00:21:58
Iain
Even in the little cameos that he's done, every single one of them, the goal against Bromley, the way he took that ball down from Pope and turned and skinned the full-back in one movement, the step over and the shot that hit, I think it was Bruno that knocked it. It went out for a goal kick. It hit one of the own players.
00:22:17
Iain
It hit it so hard. And the header, there's enough there. I mean, he's done all of that in about 25 minutes this season. Get him on. Let's see what he can do. Give him a proper goal.
00:22:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah,

Referee Decisions Debate

00:22:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
I agree.
00:22:29
Iain
I think.
00:22:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. Just to end part two, ah ah this would be probably the last sort of time we speak about the Brighton game. Speaking of 10 men, Michael, should Brighton have had their defender sent off?
00:22:40
Michael
yeah
00:22:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yes, is the answer to that.
00:22:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
LAUGHTER
00:22:46
Michael
Yes, but as I just mentioned, I can understand Wilson of Ossola. I can understand why the referee hasn't given ah ah red card and why it hasn't happened because the referee hasn't initially given the yellow card.
00:22:59
Michael
If the referee gives the the second yellow, he's off and it doesn't get retracted. It doesn't get changed by VAR at all. But when it goes to VAR, they can't change it and say, yes, give him a second yellow.
00:23:09
Michael
It either has to be a straight red or nothing at all, which is a stupid rule.
00:23:10
Iain
Mm-hmm.
00:23:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:23:14
Michael
But we'd have VAR every two minutes if it was for yellow cards as well.
00:23:17
Michael
So maybe be careful what we wish for. But yeah, Matthias Wifer, not Matthias Wifer, Wifer comes in, he slides in, takes out Tenali,
00:23:28
Michael
He gets the ball first, which is the saving grace. Why the referee doesn't give the yellow card, but the studs are above the angle. Realistically, it should have been sent off. Should have been a second yellow. Would it change the game?
00:23:39
Michael
And to be honest, it would it impact the game a lot more than two penalties that got ruled out by VAR. So for everyone saying we, bra well, Brighton were getting done by the ref, it was actually us.
00:23:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
I agreed.
00:23:51
Iain
come
00:23:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
i agree.
00:23:52
Iain
Who's ever said that Brighton got done by the ref?
00:23:55
Michael
It's all over social media.
00:23:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
All over social media, especially Twitter, Brighton fans.
00:23:57
Iain
Brighton were done by the ref.
00:23:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:23:59
Michael
Yeah, because we got three.
00:24:00
Iain
Why? Should that not have been a hard goal?
00:24:02
Michael
but The ref tried to give us three penalties when two of them clearly weren't penalties and the third one, well, no one could argue with that.
00:24:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Can't argue that. He's playing basketball.
00:24:12
Michael
Yeah.
00:24:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I know.
00:24:13
Iain
Honestly. Well, all I can just say is I'm surprised there's enough people interested in Brighton to go onto social media, given that the people who do the podcasts
00:24:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
Stupid.
00:24:21
Iain
Couldn't be asked even to start the crossover podcast I'd organised to on Friday night to put out on Saturday morning. I was sitting waiting for a Zancaster ad and still haven't heard anything from them.
00:24:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh, Ian.
00:24:33
Iain
A Zancaster link. I know, but was organised.
00:24:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh.
00:24:37
Iain
Yes.
00:24:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, that kind of leads us into our second advert from Zencastr.
00:24:42
Iain

Sponsor Ad and Upcoming Fixtures

00:25:31
Iain
Thank you.
00:25:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
going to take out the YIs, but anyway, here we are. Right. We are in the third and final part of the review pod. And I want to focus on the Premier League table because I know I said we're going to forget about the Brighton game, but am just going to mention it one more time.
00:25:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
It was an infuriating game for many reasons, but it could be a goal and a point that we look back on in three weeks' time. And it could be the point that got us into the Champions League. It is literally that tight on the Premier League table.
00:26:05
Iain
Thank you.
00:26:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
So as we know, Liverpool kindly folded like deck chairs against Chelsea and got beat 3-1.
00:26:10
Iain
the
00:26:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
So fantastic. City also got a result this weekend. So as currently stands, we have got Man City currently sitting in third on 64 points. And then we have got Newcastle and Chelsea,
00:26:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, we're fourth, Chelsea are fifth, but we are sitting on joint points. And then we have got Forest in sixth on 60 points. They have a game in hand. When do they play? Tomorrow.
00:26:34
Michael
Yeah, tomorrow against Crystal Ballas.
00:26:34
Iain
Tomorrow.
00:26:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, they play tomorrow against Crystal Palace. Right. Fantastic.
00:26:38
Iain
Come on, fellas.
00:26:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
So come on, Palace. Yeah. My question to you is, how are we feeling going into the final three games of the season? Because I am i'm anxious, nervous.
00:26:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's too close for my liking. I don't like it. need Why can't we just do things properly and just secure things quickly? Why do we have to do it the Newcastle way? Michael, how you feeling?
00:27:03
Michael
There's no fun in that. You've always got to be in there on the final day.
00:27:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Don't like it.
00:27:07
Michael
There's got to be something to play for on the final day. I'll be honest, I'm a lot less confident than what I was at the start of the day. And despite us getting a good result, that is because of the Chelsea result, I am remembering that Chelsea have really poor, poor fixtures.
00:27:24
Michael
But if they play like they did today, they could easily get results from those, including the one against Newcastle. But I do think I'm confident that we can beat Chelsea. The late goal keeps it in our hands.
00:27:35
Michael
Not that it wasn't if we beat Chelsea. Anyways, but if Chelsea had got a draw at St. James' Park and we'd lost to Brighton, then all of a sudden, Forest, if they wouldn't have won the game in hand,
00:27:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Different story.
00:27:47
Michael
It's all ifs and buts, maybes, but it's still in our hands. We can still get Champions League quite comfortably. And I think we should just relax and let the boys take it from here.
00:28:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
I wish I could take that approach. Ian?
00:28:06
Iain
Yeah, i am I think we'll know by this time next week if we're going to get Champions League because if we beat Chelsea, I think it doesn't matter what we do at Arsenal then as long as we can get something from the Everton game.
00:28:16
Michael
Yeah.
00:28:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
Okay.
00:28:22
Iain
The saving grace is that Chelsea play Forest on the last day of the season, so one of them is not picking up any points that day.
00:28:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
Big game, that one.
00:28:33
Iain
I think six points gets us up there. If we can beat Everton and Chelsea, that's our home games. We'll be OK. of course, I'm still hoping that we can beat Arsenal for the fourth time in four games this season and get nine.
00:28:48
Iain
And Man City somehow draw against Fulham in the last game of the season and we do pinch second. That'd be great.
00:28:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Do we think we're going to get second?
00:28:58
Iain
I haven't cashed out my bit.
00:28:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, don't cash out the bet.
00:29:00
Iain
but i think i think I think City will. I think we'll be third and I think Arsenal will drop to fourth.
00:29:07
Michael
Oh.
00:29:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
Ooh.
00:29:09
Iain
chelsea Chelsea will probably end up fifth. I think Forrest have done. They've lost three and four. That's why I think they'll get hammered tomorrow at Palace who undressed Aston Villa last week.
00:29:21
Iain
i think Forrest have gone, to be honest. i am So who were left?
00:29:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
city have got the kind of fixtures haven't they
00:29:27
Iain
Left guy there. Yeah, villa Villa and or Chelsea to miss out as well. Maybe it'll be Chelsea because Chelsea lose our place and Forrest might take something off them. think Villa have got good fixtures too.
00:29:42
Iain
Villa could win all of their last three.
00:29:42
Michael
Yeah.
00:29:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah um well i'm kind of hoping
00:29:47
Iain
yeah, I'd far rather Villa were in rather than Chelsea because Chelsea are going to qualify for the Europa League anyway by winning the Conference League, aren't they?
00:29:58
Michael
Yeah. hundred percent.
00:29:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
year and also we're probably going to see either Tottenham or one Man United in the Champions League next year which is baffling I don't understand how that has happened from a 15th 16th oh yeah I mean from a what are they 15th 15th and 16th in the league by the way cannot believe it um and we're probably about to see one of them in the in the Champions League next season I cannot cope with that anyway
00:30:06
Michael
That's brilliant.
00:30:08
Iain
Here's hoping we get drawn against them.
00:30:11
Michael
Yeah.
00:30:18
Michael
Yeah.
00:30:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
So we're pretty much at the end of the pod, but let's just talk about how pivotal and important the win that we're going to get against Chelsea next week is.

Champions League Hopes and Chelsea Match Importance

00:30:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's huge.
00:30:41
Michael
Yeah. Well, put it this way, if we don't win, we're not getting champions league.
00:30:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
Why would you say that?
00:30:49
Michael
If we draw, might. we draw, we might. if we draw we might
00:30:54
Iain
If we draw we need something off Arsenal.
00:30:55
Michael
like Yeah.
00:30:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:30:58
Michael
So Villar, I can see getting 69. If we win both home games, we're on 69. But we would have much superior goal difference.
00:31:05
Iain
Better go difference.
00:31:08
Michael
Chelsea, I can't see getting two wins from the last three. Forest have a decent schedule. They would need them to till well pick up nine points from four, which is possible.
00:31:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
when yes We need, we need Palace to do a favour tomorrow.
00:31:21
Michael
But let's be honest. yeah Let's be honest. City, as Ian said, their probe that they could win their next three very easily. End up on 73. Arsenal, I have to be honest, they're beating Southampton and I think they maybe beat us, unfortunately.
00:31:40
Michael
Hopefully not, but i think they may be I think they might, which would lead to them finishing above us as well.
00:31:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
No.
00:31:45
Michael
And then, even if we drew against Chelsea, Villa would be above us, but fifth place would still be ours. Providing forests don't turn up again.
00:31:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, they've dropped off a little bit, haven't they, Forrest? It doesn't
00:31:58
Michael
Yeah. But i've I've started that sentence saying it's a must win, and then I've gone, actually, if we draw, might be all right.
00:32:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
matter.
00:32:05
Michael
So...
00:32:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
I need us to secure it before the last game of the season, to be honest, because and what was going on around...
00:32:12
Iain
yeah
00:32:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
on your camera,
00:32:14
Iain
We've still got We've still got We still have won 20 games in the last 27 now Right And one of them was a draw So we've only lost 6 We're still way at the top In the last 10, last 15 games We're in great form And we've played poorly today
00:32:20
Michael
Yeah.
00:32:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, that one.
00:32:29
Michael
Oh yeah.
00:32:33
Iain
And got the best ever result at that Boga ground. So be confident, Michael.
00:32:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
We did.
00:32:38
Iain
Be confident. We always hammer Chelsea.
00:32:40
Michael
I'm saying we're going to get it.
00:32:42
Iain
We always beat Chelsea.
00:32:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
We need to hammer Chelsea, particularly because I am coming up for the Chelsea game and I don't want to waste a three and a half hour drive, to be honest.
00:32:44
Michael
True.
00:32:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
So they need to win.
00:32:53
Michael
What was the score at the last game you went to?
00:32:53
Iain
Seems reasonable.
00:32:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
We won.
00:32:56
Michael
Did we win? Happy days.
00:32:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, we're not in the forest. 4-3.
00:33:00
Michael
Oh, I can't handle another one of those.
00:33:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
Was that my last game? Was that the last game I went to? Yeah, I was sat with Joe at the top. yeah Yeah, neither can I.
00:33:06
Michael
Yeah, I can't handle another one of those.
00:33:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
So if we could just wrap up 5-4-0, that would be great. and But I also need us to wrap up the Champions League
00:33:11
Michael
Yeah.
00:33:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
by the last game of the season.
00:33:15
Michael
We're not winning that.
00:33:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, I mean, like, to curing it, because I'm not watching the last game of the season because at my best friend's wedding, so I can't sit there at the wedding and be on my phone.
00:33:23
Michael
They'll understand.
00:33:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
So that's what I'm trying to say, people.
00:33:27
Michael
They'll understand. It's fine. Some things are more important than a lifetime of marriage.
00:33:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, the groom is an Arsenal fan, so I don't think he's going to really care.
00:33:32
Michael
And I learned when my wife listens to this that maybe not.
00:33:38
Iain
Yeah, Michael's only got got to that point of view where some things are more important than a lifetime of marriage since he's been married, strangely enough.
00:33:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
oh
00:33:45
Michael
Yeah.
00:33:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
Me too, Michael. Don't worry.
00:33:48
Michael
It's alright. We all understand.
00:33:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
We're a year in. It's fine.
00:33:52
Michael
I'm dragging you both down with me.
00:33:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
and
00:33:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hilarious. Right. That is it for the pod. We're done. So whether you enjoyed it or not, but it's done.
00:34:02
Iain
Loved it.
00:34:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
So it's done.
00:34:04
Iain
Loved it.
00:34:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
So we will be back on Tuesday with a but another episode. I don't know who's on on Monday night.
00:34:11
Iain
might be It might be another Mac and Mickey Tuesday mashup.
00:34:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
So
00:34:13
Michael
who's
00:34:15
Iain
We never know.
00:34:17
Michael
It is it is supposed it's supposed to be me, you, and Joe, Nicola.
00:34:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
Is it?
00:34:17
Iain
That replaces the tactic.
00:34:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
Right. OK, I am free, obviously, because I'm on the schedule. So, yes.
00:34:25
Michael
Well, hope so. No.
00:34:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
See you tomorrow then. Thank you both for joining me.
00:34:31
Michael
No.
00:34:31
Iain
Play the tune.
00:34:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm playing it.
