Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello, dear listeners, and welcome to the Daily Newcastle podcast, where for the first time ever, it's a Mac and Mickey mashup on a Tuesday.
00:00:21
Michael
Oh, beautiful.
00:00:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's me, your host, Ian Mackay, having a chat with my good friend, Mr. Michael Grameslaw. Michael, how are you today?
00:00:31
Michael
Absolutely fantastic, mate. Thank you very much. And I am very much looking and forward to the first ever Mac and Mickey Tuesday mashup. Let's go.
00:00:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yes. It should be a Macamickie Tuesday mashup because then that allows us to have a Wednesday mashup or a Thursday mashup in other weeks. And it doesn't have to be a special occasion. We can just have a mashup.
00:00:50
Michael
No?
00:00:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
Anyway, all good. um Three separate topics really for us to to dive into, I think. And it was a little bit of a change of scene away from the Premier League because the championship is coming to its climax.
00:00:57
Michael
Yeah.
00:01:06
Michael
ye
00:01:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
Leeds and Burnley have already assured themselves of Premier League football by taking the first two automatic promotion places, although they're still to decide who's going to win that that division.
00:01:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And Sheffield and Sunderland have assured themselves playoff places. But there are five teams vying for those last or two places in order.
00:01:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
Bristol City, Coventry, Millwall, Blackburn and Middlesbrough.
00:01:36
Michael
Nailed it.
00:01:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
Did I get it? Oh, good.
00:01:38
Michael
You got it.
00:01:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah In our dry run, did forget Blackburn altogether. Sorry, Blackburn.
00:01:43
Michael
They're only Premier League winners.
00:01:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
But so yeah, I know, I know.
00:01:44
Michael
It's fine.
00:01:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
What can you do? Michael, Michael, do you want to go through who's got who left to play and who is likely to be in the frame to knock Sunderland out in the semi-final, which I think is the team that finishes fifth, isn't it?
00:02:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
The way this works.
00:02:01
Michael
Yep, 100%. Yeah, that's the way it works. Third, Sheffield United will play whoever finishes sixth, and Sunderland will face the team that finishes fifth. Now, at the minute, that looks very likely to be Bristol City, who play tonight against Leeds United.
00:02:14
Michael
It is at Ellen Road, he and Leeds are fighting for the title, so not likely that they'll get anything there, but they are the team that's drawn... almost the most in the set in the division. I think West Brom have more than them, but that's it.
00:02:27
Michael
So don't be surprised if they do come away with Elm Road with a draw, which would put them in good position.

Bristol City & Playoff Insights

00:02:32
Michael
They're already on 67 points, potentially could be up to 73 with a win in both the last two games. They do play Preston as well on the final day.
00:02:40
Michael
They would be the team to play Sunderland, in the semi-final. And I don't know about you, Ian, but Bristol City in the Premier League, it would be it would be quite nice, a bit refreshing to see a new team come up rather than Sheffield United, Burnley, Leeds. I'm not going to say something.
00:02:57
Michael
Teams who yo-yo between the two leagues. What do you think?
00:03:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, it's interesting you say a new team because you're probably too young to remember the last time Bristol City were playing in the top division. I, however, as a schoolboy, this is what i used to do.
00:03:08
Michael
Yeah, little bit.
00:03:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
but I had my Observer's Book of Association football, which had a page for every one of those 92 league clubs, which included the address.
00:03:19
Michael
Yeah.
00:03:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
So I would regularly write to football clubs asking them to send me a set of autographs of the squad. And you know i could i would get i would get a photocopied sheet with the autographs because they must have got asked for those loads of times. However, I do remember the Bristol City boys got a piece of head of notepaper and passed it around because they were all real signatures.
00:03:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't remember but Jerry Gow.
00:03:45
Michael
oh
00:03:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
He signed it. and But yeah, I was very, very proud of the Bristol City signatures about 50 years ago. Sad, really, isn't it?
00:03:54
Michael
aye I love that.
00:03:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
There you go. That's how... that's that's why that's how Bloody obsessed I was with this stupid game even way back then. and Yes, so good old Bristol City coming up. That would be excellent. And they've not done badly at all, actually, have they? They've they've been playing very well this year.
00:04:12
Michael
Yeah, 100%. I think it's it's one of those where they don't really have that many players who are notable. You'd look at them and go, oh, wow, I know he's good. like I know Narky Wells plays for them, and his most his biggest achievement was making the FA Cup final ah for Bradford when they got battered by Swansea, him and James Hansen up front.
00:04:31
Michael
What a partnership that was for anyone that, for some reason, was watching League Two at the time like me.
00:04:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
that
00:04:36
Michael
um But yes, Bristol City are the team in pole position to to get the playoffs. Then you're looking at Coventry City, who on the final day of the season play Middlesbrough, who realistically should have been in this position ages ago.
00:04:50
Michael
Both, they lost Latte Lath, who went to Atlanta alongside Miggie Almiron, and both have been relatively poor. It's painful to say for Miggie, but Middlesbrough have dropped down the league then. so But if they beat Coventry...
00:05:05
Michael
they'll actually be in pole position to get sixth with Millwall facing Burnley at Turf Moor

Middlesbrough & Playoff Predictions

00:05:12
Michael
and Blackburn away to Sheffield United.
00:05:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
okay
00:05:16
Michael
So Sheffield United might not be, you know, they'll they'll have one eye on the playoffs. No one will want to get injured. So Blackburn could easily do something there. But when you're looking at it, a win for Borough,
00:05:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
A draw is no good for Blackburn if Borough win at Coventry, is it? Because Borough just a point behind? hold
00:05:35
Michael
Yeah, so they wouldn't ah ah basically a draw for Blackburn wouldn't do them at all because Coventry are one point ahead. um And then if Middlesbrough won, they'd be on 67, which a draw for Blackburn would take on 66, or a draw for Coventry would put them on 67 as well. So a win is needed for Blackburn at Bramall Lane, but...
00:05:57
Michael
the Sheffield unit United have lost four out the last six. And, you know, their form is a bit like Sunderland's. So you have to think whoever gets that fifth and sixth spot, they might be fancying their chances at Wembley.
00:06:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Interesting stuff. and Yeah, because I think Blackburn really fell off a cliff during the early part of the year, but they're on five straight wins at the minute, I think, to get themselves back in it.
00:06:18
Michael
yeah Yeah, they're doing fantastic at the moment.
00:06:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Because it looked as if they had gone, but then they've sort of had a second win and come right back. So, what's your gut feeling, Michael? Are we going to go with Middlesbrough winning at Coventry? Is that the big game?
00:06:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Michael Carrick, his... game experience with Manchester United going to pull through
00:06:40
Michael
ah So ah I'll be honest, I can't see it for Middlesbrough. I don't mind Middlesbrough as a club, um you know, for local rivals, in quotes.
00:06:53
Michael
theyre not they not There's not really a rivalry there. Maybe when we both went down, there was a little bit of one, but that was a long time ago, and I don't see Borough too much of a threat. So i'll i'd like as much as I'd like to see them come up,
00:07:05
Michael
just for a closer game. I can't see them getting anything against Coventry City and Frank Lampard. you know I thought his career was done after Everton, but what a resurgence he's had with Coventry, who first start the first part of the season were relegation candidates. Now they're, what, four games, three games?
00:07:25
Michael
four games, sorry, away from Premier League status, which would be one hell of a story.

Sunderland's Playoff Path

00:07:30
Michael
Then I do think it'll be Bristol, who beat Preston, and then Coventry, who I believe will get a draw against Middlesbrough, but neither Millwall or Blackburn will win to send them up.
00:07:40
Michael
So that leaves Sheffield United versus Coventry City, and then Sunderland versus Bristol City as the playoffs. And I'm going to turn it back on you now, and I'm going to ask who out the two semifinals makes the final?
00:07:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Sheffield United against Coventry on current form has got to be Coventry. and ah And we're talking about Michael Carrick's big game experience.
00:08:02
Michael
That would be a big one.
00:08:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
Frank Lampard's got even more big game experience with all of his time with England and Chelsea, etc.
00:08:07
Michael
Yeah, just a little bit. 100%.
00:08:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
So, yeah, I think that is going to be a Coventry and...
00:08:11
Michael
Dreadful.
00:08:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
Sunderland lost to Oxford. They were beaten at home by Plymouth. Sunderland's form is in the toilet at the moment.
00:08:23
Michael
Dreadful.
00:08:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
So that has got to be that's got to be a Coventry-Bristol City final. And I'll go one step further and to say I would hope Bristol City would win that because the opportunity to use the euphemism Bristol Cities when talking to Nick and Joe is just too good to not have.
00:08:45
Michael
I've just laughed absolutely horrendously. To be honest, you're absolutely right.
00:08:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
that
00:08:49
Michael
bre Laughing on and in, just ah I'm glad i'm sorry don't I don't sound like Jimmy Carr.
00:08:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you.
00:08:54
Michael
um But to be honest, I do ah do agree, but I do also fear that Sunderland, it's not often you lose so many games in a row. And The playoffs is just the kind of time they'll turn it on.
00:09:07
Michael
But I do think, what I hope happens, and hopefully this doesn't happen to Bristol, maybe they don't beat Preston and Coventry go fifth and play them instead. Sunderland get to the final of the playoffs, just like they did in League One originally, and then they lose in the playoff final.
00:09:22
Michael
And then we can have another, why is it never us moment? Because that on Sunderland Till I Die was a heartwarming moment for every Geordie. But... Yeah, I think Sheffield United are a lot better than what their current form has insisted.
00:09:37
Michael
I think since they've
00:09:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
In
00:09:39
Michael
since then you know they've basically lost out on the title and promotion, I think the the the nerves have

Survival in the Premier League?

00:09:47
Michael
calmed a little bit. But I do think Leeds and Burnley are you know levels ahead of everyone else in the league, and Sheffield United...
00:09:54
Michael
you know It's hard to forget that they had a two-point deduction as well. So realistically, they're on 91 points, which would keep them in touch with Leeds right now, maybe not after tonight.
00:10:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
contention.
00:10:06
Michael
Yeah.
00:10:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, Sheffield United narrowly lost at Burnley a game or two ago to to put them out of it, didn't they?
00:10:07
Michael
So...
00:10:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
Lost 2-1. um Final question in this section, Michael. Will any of them stay up in the Premier League next season?
00:10:25
Michael
I think if anyone is going to, it will be Leeds. And it is only if They sack Daniel Farker before the season starts, like they're rumoured to.
00:10:37
Michael
And I'll be honest, it'll be really harsh because he's got them promoted. But last year, he was the best manager where he was manager of the best team in the league and they didn't get promoted. I thought for sure he was going to be sacked.
00:10:51
Michael
And every time he's got at the Premier League, he's looked out of his depth. So... think if Leeds sack Daniel Farker and they manage to bring in a capable Premier League standard manager, which Leeds are more than capable of doing so, I do think they'll stay up.
00:11:06
Michael
Burnley, the record is fantastic defensively. most The least scores conceded in ah in a championship season is 30. They've conceded 15. Second place leads could break the could break the record themselves if they keep two clean sheets.
00:11:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
mental isn't it
00:11:22
Michael
But Burnley have more than halved it and that's absolutely fantastic on Scott Parker's behalf. But again, when it comes to Premier League experience, Scott Parker's just never done it. And I really hope he does because I have fond memories of him growing up. Him and, I hate to say it, Emery in the middle of midfield for Newcastle. Obviously, one's gone on to do a little better than the other, although they're both managing now.
00:11:45
Michael
um So I can't see either of them staying up. and i Well, I can't see Leeds staying up if this is Zach Farger. And then you look at all of those teams in the playoffs, even in contention, I don't know how any of them stay up because the gulf in quality between Premier League and Championship now, it's bigger than it's ever been.
00:12:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
It is tough. It is tough. My yeah pal, who is a Sunderland fan, when he says, we'll just come straight back

Newcastle's Midfield Dilemmas

00:12:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
down again. Although, he says, although if we can hang on to all of our kids and they get through this hard period and they get promoted, they might just have enough.
00:12:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
So let's be honest. They're not going to hang on all of their kids. Chris Rigg, he's already got a ticket out of Sunderland somewhere, hasn't he?
00:12:30
Michael
No.
00:12:33
Michael
Yeah.
00:12:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I think the story will be repeated two or three times before August and the kickoff of the 25-26 season.
00:12:41
Michael
Of course.
00:12:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's grand. Thanks, Michael. Let's have a listen to Kenny Davis.
00:13:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
And what is right for us right now, Michael, is that we try and work out who is going to take Joe Linton's place on the left side of midfield for Newcastle's last four games if this reported knee injury that kept him out of the Ipswich game proves to be something that he needs.
00:13:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Maybe an operation, but anyway, needs at least a couple of weeks rest. He's going to be out until the summer then, isn't he um I think there are three candidates.
00:13:48
Michael
Yeah. 100%. Yep.
00:13:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
On Saturday, it was Joe Willock that picked up the mantle.
00:13:58
Michael
yep
00:13:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
And Joe Willock was replaced after about an hour by Lewis Miley, who I'm so pleased. he He looks like he's going to get a chance to get a little bit more game time.
00:14:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
And the third man came on as first choice sub against Crystal Palace, I think, which was Sean Longstaff. So there's three guys vying there.
00:14:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
All have got their pros and their cons. in taking over the Joe Linton role. Do you want to go through them individually or if you want to just tell me who you think should be taking and why?
00:14:33
Michael
Yeah, I think I'll go through them individually because I also want to say sort of how I think we might go about with each player at the end of the season. and I think it would typically dictate my thinking on who should play, but with such crucial games coming up, maybe not.
00:14:49
Michael
But I'll start with Joel Willick, who started against Ipswich. um yeah i He hasn't had a good season, really, has he? I think we all expected a lot more from him. He looked good in the game against Birmingham, but when it's come to playing against Premier League opposition...
00:15:05
Michael
He just hasn't really hit the heights that we would have expected. And maybe that's because he's one of these players, and I think this might be the same with Sean Longstaff as well, who needs consistent game time to get up to the level that they're at.
00:15:19
Michael
And that's every player, let's be honest. They're not going to be 10 out of 10 every game coming off the bench.
00:15:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:15:25
Michael
But I think... Willick, that explosive sort of power and pace that he has, he needs consistent game time to be able to do that. and Unfortunately, that's not something that Newcastle can offer him when you've got Joe Linton, Bruno Gamares and Sandro Tonali in ah as your three midfielders. But Joe Willock is the most like-for-like replacement for Joe Linton. So I think that, given Eddie's tactic board, that is probably where it goes. And that's shown with Willock having more minutes than Longstaff and Miley.
00:15:59
Michael
Not quite combined, but close enough um this season. And i think, I don't know, do you think Willock has it for the rest of the season?
00:16:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, first of all, I'm very disappointed that they've used the word tactics when we deliberately said this was not going to be tactics Tuesday by another name.
00:16:16
Michael
I tried to link.
00:16:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
but Well, Joe Willock, I'm a great fan of Joe Willock. He was my tip for the player of the season at the start of the season. He's going to have to pull it out of the bag if he's going land that one, let's be fair.
00:16:26
Michael
Yeah.
00:16:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
um ah thought I think he does a great job. I think when he's a a consistent run of the team, but you know certainly that season where the fantastic through ball for Isak to score against Tottenham and he was the first choice.
00:16:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think Joe Linton was out on a long-term injury at that stage.
00:16:44
Michael
Yeah.
00:16:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
He was excellent and he had the telepathic understanding with various members of the side and he's fast. Great runner with the ball. I think you're right. I think if he's just stepping in where the pattern of play has already

Lewis Miley's Potential

00:17:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
established the game.
00:17:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
He finds it quite difficult to be able to impose how he would ordinarily be playing into into that game that's already got the the rhythm set.
00:17:07
Michael
Yeah.
00:17:12
Michael
yeah Yeah, I thought you played well.
00:17:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think he was better on Saturday where he started. And so he's in the game at the start. He didn't do badly at all. um But it's not as good as I've seen him play.
00:17:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
So when maybe that is because he's he's not had a proper...
00:17:26
Michael
No.
00:17:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
first team run since he came back from his injury. I was delighted when he came off that Lewis Miley came on because I think, if I'm honest, just to switch away from Joe Willock at the minute, Lewis Miley is the future in my book.
00:17:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think he's a ah wonderfully talented lad, except calling him a lad.
00:17:43
Michael
Yeah, a hundred percent.
00:17:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's six foot four now and he certainly bulked out since he was thrust into the limelight a year and a half ago.
00:17:52
Michael
Yeah.
00:17:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
i mean, this is a kid with seven or eight games Champions League experience. He played 28 times that season.
00:18:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's got Premier League experience. This is somebody who is blooded in the Premier League and I think is ready for a bigger role. And certainly when we saw the flashes of when he's got the onus on him to take responsibility, scored a fabulous goal against Bromley, he scored a great equaliser against Nottingham Forest,
00:18:02
Michael
Something that, yeah.
00:18:25
Michael
Yeah.

Sean Longstaff's Future

00:18:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't think we've seen enough of that. I do think sometimes he's a little bit overawed still when he walks into a midfield that's got Bruno and Tonali playing alongside him and there's too many square balls to one of the big players.
00:18:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
He should just have the confidence to do it himself, I think, and that would come with him playing.
00:18:38
Michael
Yeah.
00:18:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
What do you think about Lewis Miley?
00:18:45
Michael
Yeah, I think he's the future, as you say. I think he's one of those players that could walk into most, let's say, bottom half Premier League sides and still do a job and look fantastic.
00:18:56
Michael
I think... ah Compare him to Willick is what a lot of people thought Willick was going to be when he was 18-19 of fantastic player coming through. Obviously, Willick was a little bit more pacey than what um Lewis Miley was.
00:19:09
Michael
But when he was coming through, Arsenal fans were saying he's the you know he's the next big thing for us.
00:19:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm go
00:19:14
Michael
And it looked like that in FA Cup games. But injuries were what set Willick back. Miley's had one relatively large injury so far, nothing major.
00:19:25
Michael
And he came back from that. It looks like what people thought was his biggest weakness. He's turned into a strength and that is his strength. and He has bulked out. So he's took that time off as an injury.
00:19:36
Michael
And he's improved on what he's weakest. So for me, that's fantastic because there's no doubt with his ability at the bolt with the ball. um I just want to see him have more minutes. He's had less minutes this season than Lloyd Kelly and Emile Kraft.
00:19:50
Michael
and it's In fact, he's had less than Callum Wilson. And you're looking at it and going, he's are he's our next big thing. a Give him more than 240 minutes in a Premier League season.
00:20:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
Absolutely.
00:20:03
Michael
ah um it's It's horrible to see him get so little.
00:20:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, there there was there were people talking about whether he needed to go out on loan, and I was delighted when Eddie did come back from his bout of pneumonia in his first press conference. He was asked about that, and he was very, very adamant that neither Lewis Miley nor Willis Sula were going to go out on loan because they were a very big part of the current squad and and would be would be taking a bigger part as as time goes on.
00:20:26
Michael
yeah ah Well, ah let's switch that question.
00:20:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
So that's very good. and What about your Sean Longstaff, though? This sounds like a really nerdy footy version of Snog Marry Avoid, doesn't it? Let's get on to avoid.
00:20:45
Michael
Ian, Shagmar... Not Shagmar, it is Shagmarry tonight.
00:20:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
No.
00:20:49
Michael
Ha ha ha ha!
00:20:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
Snog, Michael, snog.
00:20:53
Michael
Right, i've I'm just quoting the Chris Ramsey and Rosie Ramsey podcast.
00:20:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
What, I think there was a little bit of,
00:20:57
Michael
If anyone asks, it was a quote, and I did not mean what I just said. You know what? Keep that in, because that'll be funny. But yes, Sean Longstaff, as a footballer, not as a human being, I think his time at Newcastle is probably close to being done.
00:21:14
Michael
Yeah. I think the only reason he does stay will be because of Champions League homegrown quota. um If he does stay, it's because of that.
00:21:24
Michael
It's not the ability side of things. I'd probably have him down as... what, he'd be that's fifth or sixth choice. Whatever you put Lewis Miley as, he's neck and neck there.
00:21:36
Michael
And I think, realistically, you want Miley in the next but in next season to be overtaking those players quite easily. And they're not going to do he's not going to do that if he doesn't have game time.
00:21:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:21:47
Michael
So, long staff, last year, think that was the year where we can go, right, homegrown boy, did fantastically. This year it's right, now it's time to move on.
00:21:57
Michael
And if Longstaff does leave, he's got some fantastic memories at the club. But much like Joe Willock, I look at him and go, if you're getting consistent game time at other Premier League clubs, you could still be fun you could still be a very good player And ah hope they do.
00:22:14
Michael
I hope it doesn't come to bite us in the bum, but I would love it if they went to other Premier League clubs and did fantastically. And I do think Longstaff, not really the good fit for Newcastle right now.
00:22:26
Michael
Willock and Miley are probably ahead of them in the pecking order for me. But I think you'll leave in the summer and I don't think you'll get much minutes before the end of the season.

Newcastle's Premier League Prospects

00:22:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
What about Joe Willock for the summer? if if we are If we've got a big war chest and there's a fabulous midfield player that pops up, or someone like Cunha joins who can play in midfield as well if he still want to play Izak at the same time, does that mean that Joe Willock has spent his time here as well?
00:22:42
Michael
Mm-hmm.
00:22:48
Michael
Yeah.
00:22:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Because we do have to start looking at upgrading the general quality of the squad, don't we?
00:22:55
Michael
and
00:23:00
Michael
Yeah, unfortunately, I think Joe Willick has played 29 times for Newcastle in the Premier League this season and hasn't got a thousand minutes yet. So I think it tells you a lot about his injury record. And I think it's one of those that Howe's getting a little bit, not annoyed with, but he's aware of.
00:23:17
Michael
I've got a centre midfielder here who I just can't rely on to keep fit.
00:23:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
frustrated with.
00:23:21
Michael
And I think in a year where hopefully we're back in the Champions League, we're guaranteed Europe. So we can say that. Yeah. I think he's not going to be able to rely on Joe Willick. And if someone like a crystal palace come in, who I think he'd be absolutely incredible for crystal palace. And we'd, I think people would ask the same questions about Willick as they're asking of Elliot Anderson now of would we regret selling them?
00:23:46
Michael
Um, but I think if you went to somewhere like crystal palace, you'd probably accept what we bought them for the 20, 25 million range. Um, um and he'd go on to be fantastic I don't i wouldn't want him to go because I love the lad I think he's fantastic but you've you said it there you've got to look at improving the regular squad players at some point and if you can sell one for 20-25 million in upgrade it's almost a no-brainer in the PSR era
00:24:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
for For both of those guys, let's be honest, a move could get them first-team football every week instead of bit-part players sitting on the bench.
00:24:20
Michael
yeah
00:24:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I think both those lads have had way too little football this season.
00:24:26
Michael
Yeah, unfortunately.
00:24:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
You mentioned what my final point in this section was going to be. What a shame that we don't still have Elliot Anderson on the bench because i think he would be I think he would be the first change if it came to having to replace Joe Linton.
00:24:35
Michael
Yeah, 100%.
00:24:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
because he's better than all three of those players.
00:24:42
Michael
Yeah. and so
00:24:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hopefully Miley will move we'll accelerate up to him or past him. But Anders has been wonderful for Nottingham Forest. Fair play to him and curses to PSR. Right, I'm going to pause there um and ask you, Michael, to give us the Zencastr advert.
00:25:01
Michael
Absolutely fantastic. Here at the Global Sports Podcast Network, we've spent a lot of time selecting our delivery platform. And Zencastr, well, Zencastr came out a clear winner.
00:25:12
Michael

00:25:23
Michael

00:25:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well done, Michael. Not reading, eyes on the camera. Looked like a newsreader there. That was brilliant. Have you got an autocue?
00:25:36
Michael
lovely stuff yeah it's just behind ah not quite professional the dreams are there but unfortunately my dreams are about the same as sean longstaff winning the champions league so yeah it's not happening sorry sean that was that was unnecessary
00:25:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
I know you're a professional journalist and everything. Have you got your own autocue?
00:25:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, he had his chance.
00:25:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
and Anyway, part three. I'm going to revisit something that you and i chatted about in the pre-mash-up days, um because we've got four games left in the Premier League.
00:26:05
Michael
Ooh.
00:26:09
Michael
Yeah.
00:26:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
And we i think we both predicted Newcastle going to be finishing in the top five to get Champions League.
00:26:15
Michael
Yeah, we did.
00:26:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's got closer and closer and fewer and fewer games.
00:26:22
Michael
OK.

Arsenal's Title Race Challenges

00:26:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Let's revisit that. Because... I still, after I mean, I don't know how many times I'm going to announce this. I still have my fiver on Newcastle to finish second but at 80-1.
00:26:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
and So I'm holding out that we pick up maximum points out of these these last four games. But I'm not sure that's what everybody would choose. um
00:26:45
Michael
Maybe not.
00:26:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
What's the situation, Michael? Is that Arsenal are five points or in second five points ahead of us on 62 points. Then it's City on 61 points.
00:26:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Chelsea and Nottingham Forest, or is it the other way around, on 60.
00:27:02
Michael
Both on 60, yeah.
00:27:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
And Aston Villa in seventh place on 57.
00:27:03
Michael
Yeah.
00:27:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
So they've all got 12 points to go for. How many points are Arsenal getting?
00:27:17
Michael
Oh, Arsenal. So their games are Bournemouth at home, Liverpool away, Newcastle at home and Southampton away. Well, the last one's pretty much a given.
00:27:30
Michael
That's three points. Oh, you're saying four points.
00:27:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yep, watch. Bournemouth draw. Because Bournemouth are for the eighth place, which could easily get the Europa Conference League place.
00:27:39
Michael
They are.
00:27:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I think Liverpool will want to do them. And I know we will be trying to make it four wins out of four against them this season.
00:27:50
Michael
yeah
00:27:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
So if Arsenal got four points, how much does that make they end up on?
00:27:56
Michael
they would have 71. was it was yeah
00:27:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
which is what my prediction was back when we looked at 10 games left, believe it or not.
00:28:03
Michael
it was yeah
00:28:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Right. So third place, Newcastle.
00:28:09
Michael
yeah
00:28:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
How many points are we going to get out of these last four games? Cool.
00:28:12
Michael
Right. Us. um So we have Brighton away, Chelsea at home, Arsenal away, and then Everton at home on the final day. I think six points there is guaranteed not guaranteed, but it's expected as a minimum.
00:28:26
Michael
You beat Chelsea and Everton at home. Chelsea aren't great. Everton have hit a tough ru a rough run of form recently.
00:28:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
A rough, tough road of form, yeah.
00:28:33
Michael
So, ah Exactly. and then I'm sounding like a dog there. um And then we've got Brighton, who are a bogey team um at the minute.
00:28:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
but
00:28:43
Michael
ah They've beaten us quite twice this season, um both narrowly as well. We've got them at the Amex on Sunday and then Arsenal, who we're the bogey team of. at the Emirates, but they do have PSG around about the same time as well.
00:28:57
Michael
I think it actually might be the seventh, the second leg. so But they've still got Liverpool and us at the same time. They might have nothing to play for. um So who knows? We might get something at Arsenal. But I'm going to go with seven points for Newcastle. I don't know about you.
00:29:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, Michael, I'm and i'm going for... OK.
00:29:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
Do you know what? i think I think... No, I think the Brighton game will be horrible, like the West Ham game was, and we will win it narrowly, 1-0.
00:29:18
Michael
You're going to go for 12, aren't you?
00:29:24
Michael
Yeah. Ooh.
00:29:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think we'll stuff Chelsea, because we always do.
00:29:30
Michael
Yeah. Yeah.
00:29:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
I do think Eddie will out-tactic... I mentioned that word myself tonight. Sorry, sorry folks.
00:29:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think Eddie will out-tactic Arteta, who will have his eyes on the main prize, which is going to be the Champions League. Either... because they're all feeling suicidal because they got knocked out by PSG, or they got through when they've got the final to look forward to.
00:29:37
Michael
It's the Lynx.
00:29:52
Michael
Hopefully the former.
00:29:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And then we play Everton at the end, which will be, because we'll already have leapfrogged Arsenal when we beat them.
00:29:56
Michael
yeah
00:30:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
that will be ah That will be a celebration of our runners-up spot, Michael. I think you'll get 12 points, and we finish, therefore, on 74. Compared to...
00:30:11
Michael
I mean, that is...
00:30:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
compar to and well We could even draw the last game against Everton. We'd still finish second.
00:30:16
Michael
Well, yeah, sure.

Assessing Manchester City's Fixtures

00:30:20
Michael
I'm not sure I see us beating Brighton or Arsenal, but I would love it. I would love it if we did.
00:30:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
Of course.
00:30:27
Michael
um So I said seven, you said 12. Should we go a happy medium and say nine?
00:30:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
and
00:30:34
Michael
Which would put us on 71 as well.
00:30:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Depends if that means we've... Would it? Nine.
00:30:38
Michael
Yes.
00:30:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, Arsenal have got a better goal difference, though.
00:30:41
Michael
We can make up 13 goals, that's why.
00:30:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's only two games. Okay, right.
00:30:46
Michael
Yeah.
00:30:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, I predicted 71 points. If you remember, I had four teams finishing on 71 points. I don't think the last two are going to be the same, though.
00:30:53
Michael
Yeah.
00:30:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Manchester City. Now, my gut feel is that they've got four very winnable games.
00:30:59
Michael
Yeah.
00:31:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
boat But, but, when I'm starting to, again, I'm wishing Newcastle into second, and I don't want City to I don't want City to take advantage of us dropping any points.
00:31:03
Michael
Very much so.
00:31:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
They do play Wolves first up, don't they, at City, but Wolves have won six on the bounce.
00:31:18
Michael
Yeah.
00:31:21
Michael
Yeah, so Wolves are the only team ah who have won six on the bounce as well.
00:31:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
So I'm hoping...
00:31:25
Michael
We're second in the forum table. They're first. And then it it is City in third, but we don't talk about that.
00:31:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, but I think that's going to be a very yeah close game. And Man City have come out on the right side of very close games in... against Forest in their cup match, against Villa with a goal in the fourth minute of injury time.
00:31:47
Michael
yeah
00:31:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
So they can't do it every week, can they? I um think Wolves take something off City there. Who else have they got? but Three...
00:31:54
Michael
So it's Southampton away, so unfortunately, again, that's three points.
00:31:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's a weird...
00:31:59
Michael
And then... The tricky one will be Bournemouth at home, which looks like it's going to be moved ahead. So it'll be, they'll play Southampton away on the Saturday, likely Bournemouth at home on the Wednesday or the Thursday.
00:32:16
Michael
And then they'll have the FA Cup final against Crystal Palace on the Saturday. So all eyes could be on that final if they're already confident of top five.
00:32:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh yeah.
00:32:24
Michael
So Bournemouth could, Bournemouth control our fate here basically, um but they could do a lot.
00:32:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
They do.
00:32:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
They do. Bournemouth are a tough old team. And as I say, they do still have something to to go for because I think they're ahead of Fulham and Brighton in that chase for the eighth place.
00:32:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
And
00:32:43
Michael
Yeah.
00:32:43
Michael
So
00:32:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
the different combinations of who can finish via the league in Europe. It could easily drop down to eighth place, getting into the Europa Conference.
00:32:50
Michael
yeah
00:32:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
So were the last two games for City? Did you say Bournemouth?
00:32:57
Michael
the last two were Bournemouth at home and then Fulham away. So Fulham away is a very tough game.
00:33:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's a tough game.
00:33:04
Michael
Yeah.
00:33:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's the Fulham team that just beat Liverpool, isn't it?
00:33:09
Michael
um
00:33:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:33:10
Michael
Did they just beat Liverpool?
00:33:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, they beat Liverpool 3-2. three two about a month ago. It's Liverpool's other defeat other than Forest.
00:33:18
Michael
My memory's not that good.
00:33:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yes, so what do you think?
00:33:22
Michael
So yeah, very difficult team
00:33:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
City will get, well they've got a win against Southampton haven't they? um I think they'll draw Wolves.
00:33:29
Michael
Yeah, easy win there.
00:33:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
drworves Draw Wolves, draw Fulham.
00:33:32
Michael
Yeah, i could like could's see I could see them getting a draw against Wolves on Friday night. Wolves, the in-form team, they've got nothing to play for, but that seems to help them out.
00:33:44
Michael
They're fantastic at the moment. I do think they'll get a draw. Southampton, they'll batter. I do think they'll end up beating Fulham on the final day, and then I'm hoping for a draw against Bournemouth with one eye on the cup final.
00:33:58
Michael
So that would give them it eight points, yeah.
00:34:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
eight 8. Yep. And up to 69 points.
00:34:06
Michael
So two less than what between us we thought Newcastle would have.
00:34:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. Yeah. and Forest. Now at this, I think. It's hard to predict because those Forest Boys look absolutely depressed when they got beaten in that FA Cup semi-final. That was what they were.
00:34:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
That was the real prize. They really did because they have never won the FA Cup, have they?
00:34:26
Michael
They wanted Wembley.
00:34:28
Michael
Yeah.
00:34:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
That was a massive historic moment for them. and And to be fair to them in the second half, they deserve to get something out of the game.
00:34:34
Michael
yeah
00:34:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
So they hit the bar on the post. They hit the bar more regularly than Richard Burden. ah No, they they hit the bar three times, I think it was, in the second half at 2-0 down.
00:34:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
And City were fortunate not to get drawn into one of those games, in which they've had at the season of of throwing away.
00:34:52
Michael
Yeah.
00:34:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
They're very good at losing 2-0 leads, Manchester City.
00:34:58
Michael
Yeah. 100%.
00:35:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
So, Forest, I think, have got a pretty awkward run in as well. I know they finished playing away at Chelsea. That's going to be like its own little cup final.
00:35:10
Michael
At home to Chelsea.
00:35:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
Sorry, the last game is at home to Chelsea.
00:35:13
Michael
That's yeah. Yeah.
00:35:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
Who have they got before that Michael?
00:35:16
Michael
So Thursday, um the 1st of May, they play Brentford at home, which tough tie. Brentford are a lot better away from home now than what they are at home.
00:35:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
Absolutely.
00:35:25
Michael
ah They play Crystal Palace um away on the following Monday, the 5th.
00:35:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:35:31
Michael
Then they've got a an easy three points, you would say, at home to Leicester, unfortunately. And then they do play West Ham at the London Stadium on Sunday the 18th. So two games in there you would expect them to win, particularly with the way West Ham have been under Potter.
00:35:46
Michael
But then it is going to be the games against Chelsea, Palace and Brentford that you know could see them not, slip well, maybe even slip out of the Champions League spots, which a few games ago it was unthinkable.
00:35:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
a It was. So I've given them two wins against Leicester and West Ham and three draws.
00:36:05
Michael
Mm-hmm.
00:36:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's seven points.
00:36:07
Michael
Ooh. i do think one of those yeah I do think one of those draws, at least they'll turn into a win.
00:36:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's 67.
00:36:16
Michael
um I do think Palace beat them. I think Palace against us were nothing like what we'd normally see of them. At Selhurst, They do you have a cup final coming up as well, so maybe ah the players should be bouncing. We have just mentioned that that will impact City, um but I think Selhurst, Crystal Palace, great bunch of fans. They'll get behind the team ah between now and then, surely.
00:36:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
10. Yeah.
00:36:37
Michael
So do think they beat Brentford, I think, um at their own stadium.
00:36:41
Michael
They lose to Palace, beat Leicester in West Ham, and then I actually think they beat Chelsea on the final day, but I'll go for the draw because i can't see it potentially ending as a stalemate, which would give them um seven, eight points.
00:36:59
Michael
No, not eight points. ah
00:37:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
ten
00:37:01
Michael
10 points. Yeah. I've gave them a draw in there when I've had them to win.
00:37:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:37:05
Michael
Yeah. 10 points, which would.
00:37:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
Where are they now?
00:37:09
Michael
So they're currently on 60.
00:37:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
60.
00:37:10
Michael
So they would be on 70. So still below Newcastle.
00:37:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
Good stuff, boys. um
00:37:17
Michael
ah
00:37:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think that's a tough run. I think Brentford at home is a really tough game. Brentford, they must be up near the top of the yeah away form table.
00:37:22
Michael
Yeah.

Forest & Chelsea's Fixture Challenges

00:37:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
don't know if it was five five wins.
00:37:27
Michael
100%, yeah, they're they're very good at the minute.
00:37:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
out the only The only match they've lost in six games was at Newcastle, wasn't it?
00:37:34
Michael
Away from home, yeah.
00:37:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. So I think that's tough. And you've given that to Forrest. And then you've given them the the decider. You've given them a win against Chelsea. So I think you've been quite generous.
00:37:44
Michael
ah I gave them a stalemate there, to be fair. I gave them a stalemate.
00:37:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
Did you?
00:37:47
Michael
I said I wanted them to win, but we'll change it to stalemate because I can see it happening.
00:37:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
All right. OK.
00:37:51
Michael
So that's still 10.
00:37:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
OK.
00:37:53
Michael
But, yeah.
00:37:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
OK. Well, that's them on 17.
00:37:56
Michael
Yeah.
00:37:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
What a Chelsea. Well, Chelsea have got such a tough run in. Away at Newcastle.
00:38:00
Michael
Chelsea aren't.
00:38:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's a defeat straight away, isn't it? I think they lose at Liverpool.
00:38:04
Michael
Yeah, you've...
00:38:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think they lose at Liverpool.
00:38:07
Michael
Hopefully, but Liverpool might be on the the old celebration train um and Chelsea might just keep them off, get them off guard. But at the same time, Chelsea have an away trip to Sweden um on Thursday.
00:38:21
Michael
So they're not going to be in the best of fettles going into the Sunday's match either. So, yeah, maybe, you know, I do agree. I do agree. Liverpool, but I think it'll be very close.
00:38:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't think Liverpool will want to lose again this season when they've gone through the season with just two defeats. I think they're professional enough to see it out. So we've got Chelsea losing at Liverpool and losing away at Newcastle.
00:38:43
Michael
protection obviously
00:38:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
Drawing at Forest. And they must have one other game, which must be the one that they can win.
00:38:52
Michael
yeah yeah they do have a very winnable game against Manchester United on Friday the 16th of May and let's be honest pretty much everyone beat United this season so the Sorry, Manchester United. They're not United.
00:39:09
Michael
um So that is four points, which would take Chelsea to 64 points. And, well, that very much, I think, solidifies them in seventh place.
00:39:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
Right. And finally Villa.
00:39:23
Michael
Yeah.
00:39:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
Now Villa were heavily beaten by Crystal Palace, which was a massive shock to me.
00:39:32
Michael
Yeah, same.
00:39:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
um i I thought they were going to get through that. foot were Nailed on. Odds on. But they lost. And I hear today that Marcus Rashford has done camstring and unlikely to play again this season.
00:39:43
Michael
Yeah, that's right.
00:39:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
Largely because the last game he's got to play is is meant to be against Manchester United and he would be um excluded from that anyway.
00:39:54
Michael
Yeah.
00:39:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
So how many points are

Aston Villa's Premier League Journey

00:39:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Villa getting? To be fair, they've only got four games, and to get up to Newcastle 71, I think they need to get 14, do they not? No.
00:40:04
Michael
Um, yes, they would. Yeah, they would.
00:40:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
They need to get... Right.
00:40:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
So we don't care.
00:40:08
Michael
57 to 71.
00:40:08
Michael
14, yeah. We don't care a call comes true, but I do think they get 12 points.
00:40:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
We don't care now.
00:40:15
Michael
um
00:40:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:40:16
Michael
I think... Fulham at home. If it's away, I think it's a tough game, but I think they beat Fulham at home. and They'll also want to bounce back from Wembley disappointment. Bournemouth away, tough game, but the way Villa are playing in the league at the moment, they're untouchable.
00:40:31
Michael
And they're better away from home, if I'm honest, with the pace of Watkins up front. And then they finish the season off with two of the easiest fixtures you can ask for. And I'm not talking Southampton and Ipswich. I'm talking Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United.
00:40:43
Michael
And yeah, neither of them look likely to lay a glove on Villa, unfortunately. So I could really see them picking up 12 points, which makes it so important that Newcastle get above 70.
00:40:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, absolutely.
00:40:56
Michael
Or 69, actually, because goal difference would do us a solid, but yeah, ah minimum two wins needed for the Toon.
00:41:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, think we've got them. I think that means we're going to be Champions League.
00:41:06
Michael
Hmm.
00:41:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, you know, I'm dreaming of second place. Realistically, if we didn't beat Arsenal and I took three points off our 71, that still makes us at 68, which puts us in, what, fourth behind City?
00:41:20
Michael
ah behind Villa as well Villa would have 69 but we'd still be 5th
00:41:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Right. Oh, that is too close, isn't it? We're going to have to win against Arsenal.
00:41:30
Michael
oh actually no witby we'd be 6th because we've picked we predicted Forrest to pick up 10 and be 71 we've just predicted we get you yeah if we don't get anything against Arsenal we've predicted that we'll get Europa League this has gone horribly wrong
00:41:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
Really?
00:41:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
That is tough. No, it's not. This is why we're doing it, because it is that close. It is that close, and every game is really, really important.
00:41:51
Michael
Yeah, it is.
00:41:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's why, um what did we give ourselves? Did you give us eight points? but We give ourselves eight.
00:41:55
Michael
Yeah, it's massive.
00:42:00
Michael
Yeah, so...
00:42:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
So we need a win at Brighton. That's a game that we can win if we if we turn up.
00:42:07
Michael
Oh, wait, eight points would put us on 70. So we'd be ahead of... um
00:42:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
so like
00:42:13
Michael
So, yeah, so nine points would put 171. So, yeah, so if we even if we draw against Arsenal, we'd still have 69, but the better goal difference would mean we'd finish above Villa.
00:42:24
Michael
So, yeah, we're fine.
00:42:26
Michael
Breathe.
00:42:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
um But we can't, but we can't i mean that's got us winning against Everton and Chelsea hasn't it? And drawing somewhere else.
00:42:33
Michael
St. James' Park is a thoughtress. We're fine.

Final Thoughts & Farewell

00:42:36
Michael
It's not the fortress it once was, but yeah, we'll be fine.
00:42:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
I hope you're right Michael.
00:42:40
Michael
Look, we always turn up when we're not expected to.
00:42:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
The thing is that it's just it's just very, very interesting each game week. And in fact, but the individual games that get played in between the game weeks are also interesting.
00:42:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah yeah I punched the ceiling when Crystal Palace scored that fabulous goal at the end of the match at Arsenal and meant that Arsenal only drew at home against them.
00:43:01
Michael
Great
00:43:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
I know. I'm sitting watching matches every night as soon as they're on.
00:43:05
Michael
goal.
00:43:08
