Introduction of Hosts

00:00:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello ladies and gentlemen and welcome back to the Daily Newcastle podcast. My name is Michael Grameslop, I'm your host today and I am joined by Joannez and Ian McKay. Ian, I'll start with you. How's it going bud?
00:00:23
Iain
It's going great and it's going slightly better than I thought, knowing that we're talking to some ladies and to some gentlemen. And there was me thinking it was just football fans, but you know, how it's going good, Michael.
00:00:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh!
00:00:32
Jo
ah
00:00:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
Degenerous.
00:00:33
Iain
Thank you very
00:00:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah Absolutely cracking stuff. And don't worry, if I'm not calling anyone a degenerate, I'm on about myself. But I'm also joined in the team by Joanne. How's it going, Jo?
00:00:49
Jo
I'm good. I'm also degenerate, so we're all good. It's fine.
00:00:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:00:54
Jo
We all worked well together, yeah.
00:00:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
Cracking stuff.
00:00:55
Jo
yeah
00:00:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, there's a reason we've all got put together on the team and it's worked out very, very well.

Newcastle vs Arsenal Match Review

00:01:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
But in today's episode, we're going to be giving a full review of the the Arsenal defeat on Sunday afternoon.
00:01:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
As it turns out, three was indeed the magic number. We couldn't beat them a fourth time in one season. Maybe a little bit too much to ask for. But we'll start prior to the game.
00:01:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
Two bits of big news with the lineup. um and that I somehow missed the Alexander-Izac being out injured when I saw the initial lineup.
00:01:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
I went, oh, Botman's back. Happy days. And then got a massive surprise when Kev went, Izac's out.
00:01:34
Iain
I and so
00:01:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
like, No, he isn't. I would have seen... Oh, no. But we'll start with the good news. Sven Botman, back-to-back starts with the Dutchman now. How do you think he performed overall, Joanne?
00:01:51
Jo
Um, well, again, he's been out for a long time, hasn't he, really? So, um, he was never going to be on top, top form, but I think he had a good outing, if you want to call it that. Um...
00:02:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
No.
00:02:03
Jo
I find it really hard to break down individual play the minute. It's like, um I'm more of a, we had a great first half and then not such a great second half type of thing. And I'm talking about overall team, obviously at this point, but if we're just told about Bachman, it was nice to see him back at the end of the day, it was.
00:02:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:02:16
Jo
And I was quite excited to see the lineup. And even though Izak was out, um strange enough, right before the lineup was announced, I was just like, well, if Izak's going to be playing how he's been playing recently, I'd rather him not play.
00:02:29
Jo
And then literally like two minutes later, the the lineup comes out and he's not playing.
00:02:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:02:32
Jo
i was like, all right then. So curse that one.
00:02:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah I didn't mean it, I swear.
00:02:36
Jo
I know. I know. Sorry.
00:02:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, what about you, Ian? Glad to see Sven Botman back and has he impressed from what you've seen?
00:02:44
Iain
Well, i'd certainly first half performance, we looked solid. um That three at the back with Murphy and Livermento as marauding wing backs is a fabulous line-up because we can push one of the centre-halves, whether it's Byrne or Schaar that comes running out to to join the midfield.
00:03:07
Iain
it is It's a killer. Chelsea couldn't get through it.
00:03:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah
00:03:11
Iain
Arsenal couldn't get through it the last time. um And they didn't really get through at this

Impact of Izak's Injury

00:03:15
Iain
time. They were really quiet in the first half. um
00:03:19
Iain
I know what you said there, Joe, about Izak's not being very good. in the He's been off it because he's been carrying this injury, presumably.
00:03:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:03:27
Iain
But it's so close to kickoff when it's announced that he's not playing. um I was deflated. I can just imagine and the rest of the lads being deflated here in that news.
00:03:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:03:34
Jo
Yeah.
00:03:40
Iain
And Callum Wilson's coming on. They're going, great Cal, yeah.
00:03:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:03:44
Iain
But I think there would be an ah an opposite and opposite reaction in the Arsenal camp as well, who would have been very nervous playing us.
00:03:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
but
00:03:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:03:56
Iain
But then to hear that Izak's not coming out, what a shot in the arm for them to to get started.
00:03:58
Jo
yeah
00:04:02
Iain
But yeah, anyway, I thought Bottman did as well as he did when he played against Chelsea.
00:04:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, 100%. and to so
00:04:08
Iain
He doesn't look like he's carrying any injury at all.
00:04:09
Jo
Mm-hmm.
00:04:11
Iain
It's probably match fitness that got him substituted when he was substituted. um and And that's good. I hope he's over everything and we've got him full pre-season and he's fit and firing and in the first team, probably with new centre-back partner on the first game of next season.
00:04:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah 100%. And to be honest, he's one of those players that every single time he plays now... When he goes down, number I'm a little concerned. Even against Arsenal, he clear the he cleared a cross.
00:04:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I could tell it he just hit him a bit hard and he fell backwards. But I was like, if he's fallen backwards, he might have tweaked his ankle or something. It's stupid because it would never happen.
00:04:47
Jo
Yeah.
00:04:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
But it's it's just one of those. But yeah, bottom and back, very happy about that. Isaac, it's been confirmed that it was the the minor groin injury, um which you might remember is the injury he picked up last season, which led to a missing 10 games for us.

Callum Wilson's Role and Future Plans

00:05:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's also the one that led to him missing Liverpool. I did see a lot of um stuff after the game. Basically, people say, no, he's going to need surgery in the summer. How is confirmed that is not the case, ah thankfully.
00:05:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
um But it was Callum Wilson, as we said, who came in for Izak. um Yeah, Asula replaced him in the 64th minute. Joe, I know you've said you don't really like talking about individual players, but Callum Wilson, what did you think about his performance?
00:05:30
Jo
Yeah.
00:05:33
Jo
It wasn't great, was it? um I wasn't excited to see him start. I know obviously he's at the minute the obvious choice for hell. I would have loved to have seen him have a bit of a bit of balls and play Osula from the start. and you know It's not going to happen, but I want to see Osula start against Everton because I'm assuming that Isaac's now out for that game as well. but um No, I wasn't impressed. with Wilson didn't really do much.
00:06:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:06:00
Jo
I don't think he did anything wrong because he didn't do anything right. He just didn't do anything. was more my kind of overall synopsis of Wilson, unfortunately.
00:06:07
Iain
I thought in the but what I saw in that first half, I thought Wilson was actually never back to his real best, is he?
00:06:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah
00:06:15
Iain
Because he's two years older and he's carried something.
00:06:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
More mobile than normal.
00:06:18
Iain
But he was quite mobile. He was holding the ball up pretty well. he was He was given as good as he got with the two Arsenal centre-halves up his backside.
00:06:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:06:28
Iain
um i thought he did as well as we could expect.
00:06:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:06:30
Iain
and
00:06:31
Jo
Yeah. Mm-hmm.
00:06:32
Iain
Faded, obviously, and and and rightly was replaced with a decent run for Osula, was it 64 minutes?
00:06:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
ye
00:06:40
Iain
So he got half an hour plus. And I do like him. He's exciting, even against Arsenal, he's trying stuff. But one fantastic step over and cross through that was just too good for the rest of the Newcastle team and about 10 minutes from the end.
00:06:48
Jo
yeah
00:06:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:06:55
Iain
It'd be everybody. and So yeah, I wouldn't mind Osula starting at number nine position next week against Everton. I think that might just be the Maverick, um unknown that helps to unlock what will no doubt be a very stubborn defence that Pickford is doing everything not to let a goal in with
00:07:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:07:17
Jo
Yeah.
00:07:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
so are we all agreed then we'd want Azula to start against Empton's final game of the season if he's ex-injured absolutely
00:07:22
Jo
Absolutely. Yeah. Yeah.
00:07:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I think it's it's become a ah ah non-starter, really, with Callum Wilson. Unfortunately, it might be his last perform last game at St. and James' Park. I say that, unfortunately, because he's been a great player for us in past, but obviously, time catches up to everyone, and he is 33 right now.
00:07:41
Jo
Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
00:07:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And obviously, going in...
00:07:45
Iain
And he's stuck on 49 goals.
00:07:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
Sorry, go.
00:07:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:07:51
Iain
He's had so many so many cameos.
00:07:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
Really wanted to get him.
00:07:54
Iain
I mean, I know he scored against Birmingham, didn't he?
00:07:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
yes
00:07:58
Iain
um To go to 49. But how many times has he come on and played the last 20 minutes, half an hour? and he's a centre-forward. he's not He's not got one against Zipswich. He's not got one against Southampton.
00:08:12
Iain
He's...
00:08:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:08:14
Iain
Yeah, the ship has sailed, I think.
00:08:16
Jo
Yeah.
00:08:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
I actually struggle to remember I think he'd been brought to the pitch for the 3-3 against Liverpool when Fabian Shah scored late on but I actually don't think we scored from open play this season in the Premier League obviously c we scored against Birmingham but in the Premier League this season against top teams when he's been on the pitch I don't think we've scored from all by stats that is worry I can't remember it maybe I'm wrong that isn't the start of check but I'm pretty sure we haven't which I yeah
00:08:47
Jo
Michael, I'll be honest, if you don't remember it, I don't stand a chance. And I'm not being rude, Ian, but I'd be amazed if you do. Because Michael is the stat guy. So if he's not remembering this sort of thing, prove me wrong, Ian.
00:08:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah
00:08:58
Iain
I know.
00:08:59
Jo
Ian's looking at me like I'm going to prove you wrong right now.
00:08:59
Iain
We do, no.
00:09:01
Jo
Mm-hmm.
00:09:01
Iain
but To be fair, to be fair, we do score a lot of goals in the first half, don't we? Palace four in the first half.
00:09:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:09:08
Iain
Forest four in the first half.
00:09:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Less to the same, yeah.
00:09:11
Iain
Leicester three.
00:09:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, three, sorry.
00:09:13
Jo
Three.
00:09:14
Iain
um So, you know, we don't score a lot of goals once the substitutes are made. where We're usually just but solid and defending what

Champions League Hopes

00:09:23
Jo
Salem.
00:09:23
Iain
we've got.
00:09:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:09:25
Iain
um so you might be right there, Michael. The late one at Brighton was a penalty, wasn't it?
00:09:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, 100%.
00:09:31
Iain
So I can't think of one.
00:09:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah hundred percent I do have another question that i want to raise sort of off the back of that, but what I'll do first is, because I know we're reaching that 10-minute mark, we'll go to our favorite, favorite sponsor, Bionique.
00:10:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
Absolutely fantastic. And I'm talking about Ian McKay, not the advert. ah home
00:10:32
Jo
that's
00:10:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
But the Arsenal game, back to it, it was always going to be a tough one, but it was actually made tougher by the fact of when we needed a little bit of help from everyone else, they just kind of sat back and went,
00:10:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
Nah, we're happy to get rolled over. And that was obviously Tottenham, West Ham and Manchester United. So three that have been rolled over pretty much every weekend this season.
00:10:58
Jo
True.
00:10:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
except for him when West Ham played Newcastle but we don't talk about that but yeah going into the final weekend a lot of teams are tied on 66 two or two on 65 and then yeah and then Man City obviously have a game in hand after the weekend are you at all concerned about our Champions League hopes what do you think Ian
00:11:08
Jo
Two on 65, yeah.
00:11:21
Iain
and Look, it's Newcastle, isn't it? And i sat through a very one-sided, one-all draw against Everton last season, where Paul Dummett gifted them a penalty in the last minute of the game for them to get a draw, and we've been all over them.
00:11:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:11:39
Iain
Pickford played an absolute blinder. So I'm concerned Pickford might play another absolute blinder. um And if we draw, that really puts us at risk I think City will win their two remaining games to finish third.
00:11:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:11:53
Iain
And then, it therefore, it's down to us, Villa and Chelsea. And we have to win, because if we draw that game and Villa and Chelsea win, we drop to sixth, which is shocking, given that I was all already counting my winnings for us finishing second 48 hours ago.
00:12:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:12:09
Jo
Yeah.
00:12:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:12:11
Iain
um I don't want that to happen. so we've to I mean, I think it's good. i think it's good that we have to win. Can you imagine if we only had to draw for champions? That's when we would lose the game if we thought we were just playing for a draw.
00:12:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:12:22
Jo
yeah
00:12:22
Iain
um So I think we've just got to go all out and and blitz Everton. um Everton, nothing to play for. Pickford might have, but I'm not sure the whole team is going to feel that way.
00:12:36
Iain
and So my natural Newcastle United supporter... experience of 50 years plus has got me concerned we have to win a game to get anywhere and but in reality we shouldn't we shouldn't be struggling we shouldn't be struggling against Everton not when Chelsea have got way at Forest to contend with that's a harder game
00:12:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
not
00:13:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. Obviously, if Forrest win as well, they could still overtake us. So it's one of those where realistically we're only secure if, well, we would need a draw if Chelsea and Forrest draw as well, which everything's on us just the way we would probably want it.
00:13:14
Jo
Yeah. yeah
00:13:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
But Joe, ah you are you concerned about the fact it's on our in all in our hands?
00:13:18
Iain
them.
00:13:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
Because we don't really do well in that situation, but...
00:13:24
Jo
Come on. We're Toon fans. Will we ever, ever, ever feel fully comfortable? Like, i don't know. I think we could be, ooh, I was about to say 12 points clear at the top. Wonder when we've experienced that one before.
00:13:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Don't say that.
00:13:36
Jo
um So, yeah, come on. You never fully feel comfortable, do you? But um I won't lie, right? There's probably other teams I would prefer to play it being my last game because Everton are just one of those teams that, yes, all right, we can beat.
00:13:49
Jo
But Pickford, course he's going a game because he's going to want to have a game because he hates us naturally.
00:13:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:13:54
Jo
We hate him. It's fine. um And he will play his heart out to do anything possible to not get us winning.
00:13:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:14:02
Jo
um I don't want to at all rely on anyone else. I like it to a degree that's in our hands. um because i would hate to be on the other hand it literally not be in our hands and was like praying that other results are going to go in our way because as you've just mentioned look at last weekend everything went against us so that would be the worst wouldn't it really but look if we go out there and we do what we can do
00:14:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:14:11
Iain
Thank you.
00:14:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:14:24
Jo
we'll win, but we just have to go out and absolutely fight for our lives.
00:14:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:14:29
Jo
But I'd hope that the players are willing to do that anyway. And Ian, off the back what you've just said, I'm now seeing a fourth place finish personally, um because I just see City being typical City and they've, all right, had a hard start to the end season, but now all of a sudden they can play again.
00:14:43
Iain
I'm saying that. but
00:14:46
Jo
So, yeah.
00:14:47
Iain
No, well, yeah, but that that's true and probably is what will come to pass. However, they have lost a very disappointing FA Cup final against Crystal Palace. They probably think that they've got two games that they should win, so they're all right for their Champions League qualification.
00:14:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:14:57
Jo
Mm-hmm.
00:15:03
Iain
But they're playing Bournemouth, and we know, I think everyone is still going for that place because if Chelsea finish sixth,
00:15:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:15:14
Iain
They will qualify for the Europa League not by league position, but by the fact that they then win the conference. If that happens, then the number of places in the Premier League that give European football drops down to not just seventh, but eighth as well.
00:15:32
Iain
So I think Bournemouth, Fulham
00:15:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:15:37
Jo
Yeah, they've got all to play for.
00:15:38
Iain
and Brighton have all got stuff to play for to get that last place, because I think Chelsea are going to win this conference league.
00:15:41
Jo
Mm-hmm.
00:15:45
Iain
And if Forrest beat them, it looks like they'll finish in a Europa League spot.
00:15:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
but Yeah, they've got a great record at home this season, but away...
00:15:50
Iain
So it's very likely. Anyway, those teams have got enough to be motivated to play for. So fingers crossed, Bournemouth. I think they beat City when they played them at home. So, yeah.
00:16:04
Iain
Right.
00:16:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, they did all right away at St James's, didn't they?
00:16:06
Iain
so Yeah.
00:16:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
LAUGHTER
00:16:08
Jo
but
00:16:09
Iain
and I like Bournemouth. I think they're a good team. And I know they they've not...
00:16:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:16:14
Iain
They've not had the consistency they had a few, but like a month ago, but they're but still getting results. So maybe they can take two points off City, get a draw, and that that brings them back down to us.
00:16:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. Yeah.
00:16:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
please
00:16:26
Iain
We've got the same goal difference, I think.
00:16:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:16:28
Iain
So then it might be down as to who scores more against Fulham or Everton, as to whether we can finish third. So it's all still to play for, and the the good news is a win for us gets us Champions League football, whether that's in third or fourth or fifth.
00:16:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah so
00:16:40
Jo
That's true. Well, that's it.
00:16:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:16:43
Jo
Look, come on, guys. At the end of the day, I know second would have been unbelievable. Let's get real. And I think it gives it was almost the kind of fairy tale of finishing second, having the cup. It just being our best season a very, very long time.
00:16:55
Jo
But are we not genuinely happy with fifth and above when it boils down to it?
00:16:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.

Finishing Fifth: Success or Failure?

00:17:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh, 100%. Oh, yeah.
00:17:01
Jo
Come on. You know what i mean? it You know, I mean, we're talking like, oh, it would be disappointing we don't finish third in that. But we all agree, surely, that fifth and above at the end of the day, that's all that counts at this point.
00:17:12
Jo
It's an extra few quid in the purse if we finish one position above.
00:17:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
by
00:17:15
Jo
But you're talking pennies really in the grand scheme of things, aren't you? So fifth and above is main aim. That's it.
00:17:20
Iain
Well, I've got my 20 quid on at 92 for us to finish in the top four, Joanne. So that's 110 I'll get, which is a little bit of compensation for not having us finishing second.
00:17:26
Jo
When did you put that on?
00:17:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
oh
00:17:33
Jo
When did you put that one on, Ian?
00:17:33
Iain
Put that out before Christmas.
00:17:35
Iain
for
00:17:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
I remember that one to be fair.
00:17:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
I remember being told about that.
00:17:37
Jo
Oh, so like at the same time as you put the bit on for the second,
00:17:40
Iain
No, no, that was that was sad with when we'd done our chat with 11 games to go. And I suddenly thought, you know we we're going to end up winning nine of these.
00:17:48
Jo
Let's go for it.
00:17:49
Iain
I...
00:17:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
You know, the thing is, I was doing apologies on videos because I was like, Ian's right. up next
00:17:54
Jo
I know.
00:17:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm so wrong. I look like an idiot. Paul Haley and McCann. And then it's Arsenal of all teams that proved me right.
00:18:00
Jo
Good.
00:18:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm not even happy.
00:18:02
Jo
He had us all convinced though, didn't he, Michael? To be fair, Ian, you had us.
00:18:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:18:05
Jo
you had us I'll give you that.
00:18:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
I was convinced you were going to nail it.
00:18:08
Iain
hey look look Look how close it was. Look how close it was.
00:18:11
Jo
It was.
00:18:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yes.
00:18:11
Jo
It was.
00:18:12
Iain
It's down to Isaac's groin.
00:18:14
Jo
ah
00:18:15
Iain
That's what it is. If Isaac had been playing...
00:18:16
Jo
Well, I was going to say, let's not talk about that too much.
00:18:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
Just like most things.
00:18:20
Iain
Oh, you're thinking you thinkinge of Sven Botman's groin. And that's a different story altogether, Michael. um Yeah, that's down to that. I think if Isaac had played, we'd have been two up after 20 minutes and we would have coasted through to a win.
00:18:32
Iain
Because Arsenal would have been
00:18:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:18:34
Iain
so that we would have we we would just stayed on top. Those things would have run. Raya wouldn't have been quite so... Oh, God, did that save?
00:18:46
Jo
Yeah, he had a blinder, didn't he?
00:18:46
Iain
and Barnes goes through, has a shot. He's going to do really well to get down to save Barnes' shot, but then the defender deflects it past him, and he's already going down, but he somehow managed to reach further back and tip it round the post.
00:18:56
Jo
Yeah.
00:18:59
Iain
Man of the match, wasn't he?
00:18:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
He made a few
00:19:02
Jo
Well, Michael, was it not you in the chat that said when did Rhea turn into Prime Buffon or something? Was it you that said that?
00:19:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
kind of But I agreed.
00:19:08
Jo
Oh, was it Kev?
00:19:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
agreed.
00:19:09
Jo
Yeah, it was. I totally agree to that statement.
00:19:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
He got in there before me.
00:19:11
Jo
Like, yeah.
00:19:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:19:12
Jo
But yeah.
00:19:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
To be honest, he wasn't the only one from Arsenal who's my deemed as average. And I can say that because Arsenal planning on replacing him in the summer, um which is mental when you look at yesterday's game.
00:19:25
Jo
I think he's a good keeper, personally, but yeah.
00:19:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Great keeper, yeah. She's distribution's a bit like Nick Pope's, but, you know, it's it's it's one of those where I guess that's why he's...
00:19:33
Jo
Keeps you on your toes, man.
00:19:33
Iain
Thank you.
00:19:36
Jo
but
00:19:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah I get that in probably why they want to get rid of him. But yeah, he's a fantastic shortstop. One of the best in the league, obviously. And that's why he does so well. But it is a good omen ahead of the weekend's fixture of just how good we were in that first 30 minutes.
00:19:53
Jo
Yeah.
00:19:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
As you mentioned the save there, we could have been three or four up in 30 minutes. And if Iza was fit, I think you would be right, Ian. I think we'd be having a much better conversation right now about finishing second, nailing the coffin,
00:20:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
Happy days. We're going to have our best season in a long time, but it's still been a fantastic one. But one, Ian.
00:20:17
Iain
um but whatever happens, this is our best season in a long time.
00:20:22
Jo
It is.
00:20:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:20:24
Jo
Agree.
00:20:24
Iain
You know, because at worst kind worst case scenario, we're in sixth and we get the Europa League, plus winning the Carabao Cup.
00:20:29
Jo
Wish we can win, by the way.
00:20:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh, yeah.
00:20:33
Iain
That is a fantastic season.
00:20:35
Jo
Yeah.
00:20:35
Iain
um And we'd probably all have settled for that um at the start.
00:20:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
and so
00:20:40
Iain
So, you know, it's has has been a very good it has been a very good season.
00:20:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
100%.
00:20:42
Jo
If Manu and Spurs can be the finalists.
00:20:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
Very happy, yeah.
00:20:47
Jo
Yeah.
00:20:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
We can definitely win it next year, as you said, Joe.
00:20:49
Jo
Yeah. Oh, God, yeah.
00:20:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
Those two, atrocious.
00:20:51
Jo
All
00:20:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
If all we have to do is be Bodo Glimp and make a final while winning the whole thing.
00:20:55
Iain
yeah
00:20:56
Jo
Imagine.
00:20:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Of course.
00:20:57
Jo
It's a dream, that one.
00:21:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
Obviously, it wouldn't be a Newcastle defeat without some overreaction on the socials. um And as I am an idiot, I'm going to pick up on it.

Anthony Gordon's Public Perception

00:21:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah Anthony Gordon.
00:21:09
Jo
Go on, then.
00:21:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
So obviously he made the mistake, which led to the Arsenal goal. um But there's been a lot said, and I will say it wasn't just yesterday. It's been said a little bit beforehand as well about his attitude um in 2025 as whole.
00:21:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
Is that something that's beginning to concern you, Joe, the attitude of Anthony Gordon? Or do you just think, ah to be honest, I said yesterday, he's had 18 fantastic months, couple of months off the boil, given benefit the doubt.
00:21:35
Jo
No,
00:21:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
Is that how you feel as well? Or is it starting to be a bit, hang on, obviously in the Gordon of Everton?
00:21:43
Jo
I don't want to go over the top. and I know exactly what you're talking about, by the way, on the socials, because it's hard to avoid sometimes, isn't it, really? um And I'm not surprised at all that he's got hammered.
00:21:53
Jo
I've tried to avoid the socials, I'll be honest, today, to avoid kind of everyone's massive over... Not everyone, but, you know, the certain few that have will massively overreact on things about yesterday's game.
00:22:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:22:04
Jo
um But no, I wouldn't say I'm overly concerned about Gordon. I still think his heart's in it. All right, he has had times where I'd be like, well, I don't think he should play because of whatever. But I don't think there's anything untoward in it, if you know what i mean.
00:22:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
I
00:22:18
Jo
um Or I'd like to think there isn't anyway.
00:22:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
agree.
00:22:19
Jo
I hope I'm completely right here, obviously. and But no, i'm I'm not overly concerned, personally.
00:22:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
What about you, Ian? Any concerns building there or fully behind the the England winger?
00:22:27
Iain
Yeah. so i i I mean, yeah, you overhi he overhit the ball and had the ball taken off him and it led to led to a half chance that Rice put away superbly, by the way.
00:22:41
Jo
Yeah.
00:22:42
Iain
It could fall to any other player in the Arsenal side and that just gets knocked back to the halfway line for them to start to build again.
00:22:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
Brilliant. Yeah.
00:22:50
Iain
um But, you know, Anthony Gordon is picking the ball up in his own half. He's controlling it. he's He's going backwards and coming across to try and build something. And that's how so many of our attacks start.
00:22:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:23:03
Iain
And I think if once in a while he's robbed of that and it results in a chance to the opposition, it's a price I would pay.
00:23:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:23:11
Iain
It's price I would pay to encourage him to be Anthony Gordon and not to be some sort of pseudo Jack Grealish, too scared to say boo to a goose.
00:23:19
Jo
Hmm.
00:23:19
Iain
um And I have no... i have no problem with Anthony Gordon's attitude. If he's pissed off because he can't get in the team because Harvey Barnes has been playing so well, he's a team member and he'll know.
00:23:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
It was a great point.
00:23:32
Iain
You just have to watch when either of them score how the other is congratulating them. They're great pals, great teammates.
00:23:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:23:39
Iain
Anthony Gordon knows how it is. He just has to train harder to get in ahead of him, which I think he has done in the last in the last couple of games. So, no, I think Anthony Gordon is...
00:23:50
Iain
another one of our fantastic improved purchasers and was being talked about a month or two ago as being another £100 million player. This little bit of suspension and being out of first teams probably knocked him down to about £95 million now.
00:24:07
Iain
But, you know, that's still double what we paid for him.
00:24:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
100% and we'll definitely see the best of them next season and I think in a Newcastle shirt as well but before we get to next season we've got to finish that this one and before we finish this season we've got to get to another advert on this podcast which is given to us by Zencastle
00:24:14
Jo
Yeah.
00:24:27
Jo
Here at Global Sports Podcast Network, we spent a lot of time selecting our delivery platform. Zencastr came out the clear winner.
00:24:34
Iain

00:24:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
Absolutely fantastic stuff. Blimey, that was great.
00:24:55
Jo
roy It was bloody great.
00:24:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
i but but
00:24:56
Iain
i
00:24:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
I just tried to drop a hint or just drop the bomb. And if anyone has no idea what's going on, that's probably about right. We're not going to tell you.
00:25:07
Jo
probably fair, yeah.
00:25:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
On to the man of the match. um So, obviously, it was a great game from one player. and Particularly, we mentioned David Raya there. I'm just wondering if there was any other players who you think maybe could have picked up the the award on the Arsenal side and then also a man on the match from Newcastle because we don't really care that much about Arsenal. Joe, you start.
00:25:30
Jo
Oh, don't come to me first. oh
00:25:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
All right, Ian, you start.
00:25:34
Jo
Ian, you go first.

David Raya's Performance

00:25:34
Iain
Raya, I think, correct. When you sit and watch the on on the on the Newcastle website, the extended 10-minute highlights of that first half, Raya made, i mean, not just that save where he tipped Barnes' deflected shot round the post.
00:25:38
Jo
Yeah.
00:25:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:25:52
Iain
There's a header from Dan Byrne, which somehow he gets his hand on from about three yards out.
00:25:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Like, blank yeah.
00:25:57
Iain
And then when Botman stabs the rebound in, he's lying on his back. but he's able to get up and kick a leg out to be able to to be able to save that as well.
00:26:03
Jo
Yeah.
00:26:07
Iain
is and It was an inspired first half from Raya. He's got to be Arsenal's man of the match. Otherwise, it'd have been three or four down at halftime.
00:26:15
Jo
yeah The man of the match, really.
00:26:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah Do you agree with?
00:26:18
Jo
Yeah, yeah, he is, yeah. Hands down. um I don't even want to think about the rest of the team because still hurts a little bit that we lost, right?
00:26:25
Iain
It's annoying.
00:26:26
Jo
um But no, come on, it's undeniable that Raya was a man of the match for me, for sure.
00:26:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:26:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah Just on that note, I wanted to give shout out to one of the Arsenal centre-backs, Jakub Kiwio. To quote what someone said to Joe Linton after, think it was the Norwich performance, I had no idea he was that good.
00:26:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
An absolute colossus in the game.
00:26:47
Iain
Yeah.
00:26:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
On his tops of stats, whether it's tackles, clearances, statistics, every single time we put the ball into the box, It felt like it was just a magnet on his head and it was just coming towards it.
00:26:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
He was absolutely fantastic. um Made a few really last man tackles as well that stopped us getting through. And if that if they end up losing Gabriela Saliba to Barcelona or Real Madrid or whoever does, unfortunately, they've got a really good, really good replacement there in QEO, which is a shame.
00:27:18
Iain
it Kivior, he's the pole, isn't he?
00:27:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:27:22
Iain
Well, he's he's virtually already out. Somewhere in Italy is buying him.
00:27:27
Jo
really
00:27:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh. Yeah.
00:27:27
Iain
Sorry, that's what I've been reading. um And if that's the case, maybe he' maybe it's him rather than Gahey or Huisin's gone, hasn't he? If we're looking for a centre-half, that's proven top-four quality with Kivior.
00:27:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:27:39
Jo
yeah
00:27:45
Iain
But I think, yeah, I think he's he's on his way out to Napoli or Atalanta. I can't remember which one it is. Napoli, I think. um
00:27:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Either way, he'll be doing fantastic next season, this particularly in Serie because he's great defender.
00:28:01
Jo
Yeah. Solid.
00:28:03
Iain
Newcastle, man of the match. Me and you tried to pick them on the preview, didn't we, Joe?
00:28:09
Jo
Mm-hmm.
00:28:11
Iain
I picked Dan Byrne. And I don't think I was actually that far off, to be honest.
00:28:13
Jo
I'll pick Tenali.
00:28:15
Iain
to be honest
00:28:16
Jo
No, you won't.
00:28:17
Iain
Talking about last-ditch defending, there's some fantastic scything, sliding last-ditch tackles from Dan Byrne, which I'm always impressed with.
00:28:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
That was good.
00:28:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah,
00:28:27
Iain
And then by the end, his Geordie heart on the sleeve that he's um wearing, he did knobble one or two of them really quite well at the end there, didn't he? and I just thought, I felt sorry for him being on the losing side because he just gives heart and soul every game.
00:28:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
he was good.
00:28:45
Iain
I thought he was excellent.
00:28:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
no
00:28:47
Jo
Yeah.
00:28:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
Absolutely fine. I agree. What about you, Joe? Who do you think?
00:28:50
Jo
I'll give my Newcastle one. I'm going to stick with the keepers, I'll be honest, because Paul made some great saves as well. And Paul, there's nothing you could have done about that goal.
00:28:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. That Schmeichelesque one where he does this.
00:28:59
Jo
Come on. It was. that's um He literally made himself massive and it's all he could do in that situation.
00:29:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:29:04
Jo
It was brilliant. He saved it. But...
00:29:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
Brilliant.
00:29:06
Jo
No, i e had a good game and and the goal, nobody's going to, you know, we've talked about how good that goal was anyway, but no keeper was getting to that anyway. He was literally at full stretch and he still wasn't getting it. So, um no, I'm going to stick with the keepers on both sides personally.
00:29:20
Jo
And I wasn't right at all. I don't think Tenali was at his best personally. I'm not saying he had a shocker, by the way, before anyone says anything, but um he wasn't the man of the match beast that I shouted him to be on the last pod, put it that way.
00:29:29
Iain
up
00:29:33
Iain
was I was pleased Bruno stepped up in that first half. He seemed to boss it, and then he came back into it towards the end of the end of the game.
00:29:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
was excellent.
00:29:41
Iain
But but who who else is also just there every game so far? Tino is such a fantastic marauding left back.
00:29:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:29:51
Iain
And and was like there was a lovely link-up with Anthony Gordon with the back heel.
00:29:51
Jo
Yeah.
00:29:56
Iain
where Tino could have had it two or three yards either side, he would scored, but he put it straight into Raya's chest.
00:29:59
Jo
Oh, yeah. Mm-hmm.
00:30:02
Iain
What a good move that was.
00:30:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:30:04
Jo
It was a lovely move, wasn't it?
00:30:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
was another one There was another one just afterwards, like five minutes afterwards, between him and Bottman, where Bottman breaks, basically walks through the Arsenal defence, puts it through to Livermento, and it he's one-on-one.
00:30:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
The defender's probably catching him, but he just slows down to try and like yeah like let Wilson catch up. And, you know, Wilson maybe not get in, but Wilson's just not quick enough.
00:30:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
The defence got back, and yeah it looked like that was the moment where you were going, oh,
00:30:28
Jo
No.
00:30:29
Iain
Thank you.
00:30:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's just not going to work for us today.
00:30:34
Jo
Yeah.
00:30:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
But, ah yeah, yesterday I gave it Bruno. I thought he was fantastic. But to be honest, I gave both Liverpool and Bayern pretty high marks as well. So either one could have been.
00:30:43
Jo
Yeah. Yeah.
00:30:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
um But, yeah, Raya, probably man of the match. Kiwiho was fantastic. And there was a lot of names on our side that were good as well.
00:30:51
Jo
want to speak.
00:30:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
But if we look ahead Sunday Obviously, Kieran Tripp, yes, looks that he's still going to be injured. Izak could be injured.
00:31:01
Iain
Mm-hmm.
00:31:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
The question I do want to ask you both is, it's been 5-2-3 for the last two games.
00:31:02
Jo
Yeah.
00:31:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
Everton at home. Do we go back to the 4-3-3, Joe? 5-5, yeah.
00:31:11
Jo
No. 100%. Yeah. I want, I need, I want, I need, yeah, give you both of those. 4-3-3 back for the Everton. go back to, i was going to say what we're good at, but that's a bit harsh because we've played some great games, obviously, in the positions that we've now played in the last two games.
00:31:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
but the five yeah
00:31:27
Jo
But no, I think the Everton, we we need to go back to 4-3-3. um And it was a shame, you know, I watched, i don't know if I'd mentioned it, the group, but I watched the game with Dan Burns' dad, just saying, yesterday.
00:31:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
Alright.
00:31:39
Jo
um Not like with him, he was on obviously a different table. But, you know, I was but in my drunken state and Yeli went over to see him at the end of the match, but he looked foaming.
00:31:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
Ah, okay. but
00:31:48
Jo
Something went wrong. Apparently threw his phone on the table he paid his bill and like shop exited out.
00:31:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
Sam
00:31:53
Jo
So would love to know what happened there, by the way, because I'm just nosy. But yeah, so, um, I know exactly.
00:31:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Bird's dad, get in touch. but
00:32:00
Jo
And it's funny, you know, cause I told someone, they were is he massive? And i'm like, nah, he's quite small compared to Byrne.
00:32:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
Where does the height come from?
00:32:07
Jo
Like, where does the height come from? Yeah. Facially, could tell it was his dad, if you know what I mean. But yeah, he's nowhere one near as tall as Byrne. But um no, that was my only other side bit. But yeah, he wasn't a happy bunny at the end of the match.
00:32:18
Jo
And I would i would love to know what it was about. But then again, Byrne was kind of involved in that old ruckus and stuff as well. So I wonder had anything to do with that.
00:32:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. the The first thing I saw that ruckus was literally one of the players were wearing a shirt like that.
00:32:25
Jo
Oh.
00:32:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
So um it might have stemmed from that.
00:32:30
Jo
Yeah.
00:32:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
But Ian...
00:32:33
Jo
Mm-hmm.
00:32:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Back to the the question, 4-3-3, would you want to play it against Everton or are you happy with the five at the back?
00:32:41
Iain
i I love the i of the

Tactical Formation Debate Against Everton

00:32:47
Iain
degree of control and security without there being any sacrifice in attacking quality that I saw against Chelsea in the first half and I saw against Arsenal in the first half so maybe I would still keep the three lads at the back give Liveramento and Murphy licence to go forward um It's just who we've got up front. We've got people that can take those chances.
00:33:14
Iain
Let's get Osulo with the number nine on his back, figuratively. um And Gordon and Barnes, why not?
00:33:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:33:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:33:23
Iain
I think that's really attacking. With Bruno and Tonali pulling the strings.
00:33:29
Iain
And as they shuffle across, either Shah or Byrne being the extra man in midfield. Chelsea never got a vote kick. Jackson got sent off because he was so frustrated. The ball hadn't passed the edge of our box in that first half.
00:33:29
Jo
yeah
00:33:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:33:44
Iain
And Arsenal were hamstrung in a similar way for the first 30 minutes. um That just gives us a half an hour to go to blitz them with load of mad Geordies at four o'clock on the last game the season.
00:34:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:34:00
Iain
And let's switch to 4-3-3 with a few substitutions when we're three or four ahead after an hour.
00:34:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:34:07
Iain
I'm happy with that.
00:34:07
Jo
I'll tell you what I would like to see on the 4-3-3 by the way if he's not going to start Asula I'd rather him stick Gordon in the middle quite frankly and put Barnes out left and Murphy on the right um just um nothing against Wilson but maybe a little bit yeah against Wilson I just don't want to see him start personally so if he's going to insist on that I'd rather him stick bloody Gordon in the middle instead but
00:34:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:34:23
Iain
Well,
00:34:28
Iain
Gordon should be well up for it, shouldn't he, against Everton?
00:34:30
Jo
oh god yeah should be
00:34:31
Iain
Particularly in that away game, we missed a penalty.
00:34:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, he was supposed to be last time.
00:34:35
Iain
we We missed a penalty.
00:34:35
Jo
I know, right? that's That's what I'm concerned about. Hmm.
00:34:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:34:40
Iain
I think he was he was over up for it the last time. um But yeah, ah you've got to we've got to start him. But what do you think? What do you think about this? I don't think it's a... I mean, it just makes us super secure.
00:34:52
Iain
But I don't think we sacrifice a lot of our attacking strength by playing the bottom and the middle.
00:34:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't think we...
00:34:57
Jo
yeah.
00:34:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't think we do against bigger and better teams that are going to attack us. I think when we're up against an Everton who are probably going sit... not 10 men behind the ball, but eight, nine behind the ball and try and break, give it a battle and then have the wingers running off and die probably more than anyone else.
00:35:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think it might be one of those that we struggle because we just can't break them down because we just don't have that extra number in midfield potentially.
00:35:17
Jo
Yeah.
00:35:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
um I like the five. I think when you play the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea and stuff, it's it's brilliant. But I do think against Everton, we maybe need a bit more creativity in the midfield. But I do get where you're coming from because against those bigger teams, we haven't lacked any, we haven't lacked the quality.
00:35:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
We should have scored three or four against Arsenal.
00:35:41
Iain
if that If they're sitting back, then Charles is alongside Tonali as a double pivot, let's say, and Bruno is playing number 10, right off the shoulder of Gordon at centre-forward.
00:35:44
Jo
yeah
00:35:54
Iain
There's a lot of creativity there to be able to get through that defence. I don't know. I don't know. Maybe you have to switch to it. Maybe it's not plan A.
00:36:06
Iain
Everton won't be expecting it, that's for sure. They will be expecting 4-3-3.
00:36:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
True.
00:36:11
Iain
They could probably pick our team if it was 4-3-3.
00:36:14
Jo
Mm-hmm.
00:36:15
Iain
You know, they'll be wondering whether it's Willock or Miley that plays alongside Bruno and Tonali. They'll be assuming that it's Murphy, Gordon and Barnes.
00:36:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:36:24
Iain
So they're training for it all this week. Let's mix it up.
00:36:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
but ah Just, yeah.
00:36:30
Iain
That's why like Azula starting.
00:36:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
I completely agree with the Seelah Star. and And you mentioned there Willow got Miley. If we do go to the 4-3-3, which, hypothetical, Miley came on first against Arsenal. Maybe that's because Willock wasn't 100% fit.
00:36:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
But do you think there's a chance that we see Louis Miley in the start and midfield if we do go at that 4-3-3 over Willock? Or do you think, because it's the final game of the season, there's a lot of pressure, he'll go with Willock, who, let's be honest, he does trust a little bit more.
00:37:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
What do you think, Joe?
00:37:04
Jo
my Miley's got such a level head. i would start Miley. Like this pressure thing.
00:37:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. Yeah.
00:37:09
Jo
Miley can handle the pressure. So yeah No. I'd 100% start Miley. We've had this conversation before when he hasn't still started. But yeah. I would love to see Miley start personally. And I'm sure Ian agrees.
00:37:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
no
00:37:21
Jo
Because Ian loves Miley right?
00:37:23
Iain
I would start Miley. I think Howe will start Willock because I think Willock could be playing on the left side of midfield, doing his lovely runs and overlapping and linking up with Barnes, let's say, and Tino.
00:37:25
Jo
go
00:37:28
Jo
Unfortunately yeah.
00:37:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:37:29
Jo
Yeah.
00:37:37
Iain
It's tailor-made for him. He's not playing out of position there. um So I think that's where Howe would go unless he's still carrying an injury, in which case he'd trust Miley.
00:37:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:37:49
Iain
He would trust Miley to do drop in alongside Tenali and push Bruno further forward, I think.
00:37:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I agree, to be honest. And that is that is pretty much all for our show. um Thank you very much for joining me, Ian and Joe. It's been a pleasure. It's our last cup final of the season at the weekend, Sunday, 4pm.
00:38:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Make sure you get there for half three and you've had plenty of drinks beforehand because even though our place in the Europa League is pretty much secured, Sunday will be the difference of, is this the way to Barcelona are we off to Bologna?
00:38:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Good night.
