Speaker
Hello and welcome to Better Betting. my name name is Eric Rubin, and I'm here with my partner, the King of Timonium, Gary Quill. GQ, how be you?
00:00:25
Speaker
Doing well, Eric. Reboot part two of the our little podcast. I guess we had at least a a couple listeners other than yourself and me listening. But i goty I'm the one who wants to keep this short. So enough of the small talk.

Planning the North Jersey Horse Racing Trip

00:00:46
Speaker
um We are heading to North Jersey this weekend.
00:00:53
Speaker
We're going to meet up with Big T, our horse racing friend, and some of his buddies who are they do this annually. I think they've been doing it for 20-some years or maybe more. So we're crashing their party for that wonderful Friday card at Monmouth, the big six-race card.
00:01:14
Speaker
um But we're going to have fun. So looking forward to that on Friday.

Saratoga Races: Analyzing Races Seven to Eleven

00:01:21
Speaker
We are recording on Wednesday, and thankfully the Saratoga Morning Line came out about an hour ago. So oh that's good news because we will be going through the late pick five races at Saratoga for this Saturday, July eleventh races seven through 11. before we get into dissecting those races, Eric and I have tossed around, you know, we want to try and do a segment or whatever. And I threw out a suggestion that maybe ah before each podcast, we can kind of do a quick review of what we talked about last week, our successes, our failures whatever.

Race Recap: Hits and Misses from Last Week

00:02:07
Speaker
So um without a better intro or name for this, I figure this could be the good, the bad, and the fugly. So quickly, last week, um the Blind Squirrel, a.k.a. myself, wound up having the top pick winner for the first two races we covered. whipyoo There were 92 morning lines going off at 5-2, but a winner's a winner, so I'll take it.
00:02:35
Speaker
The bad is that the $32 horse from race 10 last week, it was a 0 for 7 maiden, um carried one of my favorite angles that someone kids me about, but I like it anyway. I failed to mention the horse was second time flanker, so he won, so shame on me.
00:03:01
Speaker
And the fugly is the Toddster. Todd Pletcher is an unbelievable 0 for 34 to start the Staratoga beat. So before we get into races, you want to add anything to the good, the bad, and fugly?
00:03:16
Speaker
No, you you told me about this segment a day ago. so I threw out my pee-pee, so I don't remember too much. But um I know made money race eight. We covered races seven to 11 on Friday.
00:03:29
Speaker
Race eight, I like that seven horse who โ€“ I can probably look up the name. it's not a big deal. And the 11 horse, I think, was a Bill Mott horse. So it came 7-1. That was a race where you had that four-horse spell that Podcom's now suspended for an infinity amount of days for doing nothing wrong. But that's another story. Actually, I check shouldn't say that. I don't think he did anything wrong. I was watching that replay.
00:03:49
Speaker
He was, after it happened, I went back because I was just curious. Once I heard the Hordes were okay and jockeys were okay, so that's good. Otherwise, I don't want see it. But Paco is three wide up at the leaders. didn't think he did anything wrong. now I didn't watch it several times, but I didn't think he did anything wrong. Maybe I'm way off, so I should go back and watch it again maybe. But anyway, yeah, that race I did pretty well because I keyed the seven to a flame and the 11 pillar of beauty in that race. And They came in at $33 exactly for a buck. So I had that several times. I missed the triple. didn't like the 10, well, sort of Pletcher Horse code. It was, i guess see he was suspended for like two weeks or something and his assistant took over. So he was technically the trainer, but it was another time who came in third. Cost me a lot of money in the triple. But anyway, yeah, and I know the last race, I liked a horse that didn't run, I assume, very well. It was that three horse. What was the name of that horse? The three. Salt Princess in the last on Friday at Saratoga. I didn't get to watch the race, but was not in the top four that I saw. So I guess the worst didn't run well. Who knows? Maybe I had a lot of trouble. I'll take some solace in that and pretend that that's the case. Don't ruin it. One thing I do want to mention that before we start the races, if you could ah like us here on Spotify or Apple Podcasts or wherever you're listening, if you rate us,
00:05:09
Speaker
Highly. If you're not going us highly, don't rate us, but no, i'm kidding. But yeah, if you can rate us, that be great. Guesses out there and more people. I never expected to get many people listening to our podcast when we started, and I was shocked with the numbers of people that we were able to get listening pretty much every week despite our very poor marketing skills or no marketing at all.

Podcast Growth and Listener Engagement

00:05:31
Speaker
So I really was impressed, and I wasn't expecting โ€“ anything for the reboot and you know we weren't near where we used to be but it wasn't a terrible start but if you guys can spread the word that awesome although if 100 people listen or 3,000 people listen or 10,000 probably doesn't matter to us but it would be nice so if you can it that's great also GQ is at horse racing what
00:05:53
Speaker
On Twitter or whatever it's called now, Horse Racing Nut, I'm Bbandits. So Bbandits. No, Bandits BB. See, don't even know him. I was going to say, who's Bbandits? I knew were Bandits BB. BB on Twitter as well. I'm not a social media guy, so you can tell that. Anyway, that's all. We won't talk about anything else, but we can get into the races if you want and get this puppy started.
00:06:18
Speaker
Yep. And to to um talk about the following and all that, I know people these days are visual people whatever. And even though we both have faces for radio and just audio, i i would like to eventually get, upload these podcasts to YouTube. So people are visual and who knows, Eric's kind of... um savvy with putting up, uh, visual stuff and race replays and all that good stuff. So, without further ado, we'll head into Saturday's late pick five at, uh, Saratoga, which starts in race seven, which is a one mile on the inner turf and optional claim or 80,000 nine winners of two other than, uh,
00:07:11
Speaker
I wound up settling on three-horse, five-in-one morning line Wally World for the 0 for 10 at the Saratoga Meets, Safi Joseph Barn.

In-Depth Review: A Saratoga Race Analysis

00:07:21
Speaker
I think the horse, well, the horse does have ah the best brisnet turf figure out for of this bunch.
00:07:31
Speaker
And I think ah with the addition of Tyler Gaff-Leon in the saddle, there's enough pace that this closing style a runner could get the job done if he comes home around five to one.
00:07:50
Speaker
Eric, what are your thoughts just on the race, who you like, why you think Wally World doesn't have a shot? Yada, yada.
00:08:02
Speaker
It's funny. As ah an educator, I used to have a co-teacher, and he was a jokester, I guess you can say. And when we head back to school night, I would tell the parents that Mr. K, that was his ah name. I won't say his full name.
00:08:19
Speaker
embarrassing but he would teach the first half of class and then i'd spend the second half correcting everything and that's what i feel right now i'm kidding gq i don't know said 10 don't know that that's a big deal but do you have different numbers um well no i think it goes back to oh yeah then That little meat thatarrato had that figures that Briznat gives you. Oh, and so Briznat, that's interesting. Maybe that the other race informant just uses this meat. So that's interesting. But anyway, I'm not totally against Wally World 3. I do disagree with you about the pace. I just, first of all, Saratoga, we have tough races, so no one knows. But um I think the 4-Yinzer is lone speed potentially in this race.
00:09:05
Speaker
um So I i don't, No, maybe the one has some speed to go with him. I'm not great at judging pace, so it's not one of my strengths, although it can be very important, obviously. According to time form, Nefor is pretty much the lone speed here. I feel bad not going with Yinzer Nefor just because of what the name means. Are you familiar with that term, Yinzer?
00:09:28
Speaker
Yinzer? What is a Yinzer? No. Something to do with the city in Pennsylvania.
00:09:36
Speaker
Nope, sorry. Someone from Pittsburgh. They're known as Yuenzer. You would know that. I would know, due the fact that I'm a Pirates fan. My brother, who's a pirate, who lives in Pittsburgh, you'd think I would pick Yuenzer. But um I'm going to lean against Yuenzer, the fourth three to one. My other favorite unit economics is five to two.
00:09:56
Speaker
He interests me a little more, although he's off a layoff as well. So, I can see going against that horse too. The other one's not against users. and I just feel it's been up on fairly either soft paces or paces that held together at this level down at Fairgrounds last time. The horse that he actually beat but then got DQ'd from, legalized, was 19 to 1. So they were kind of, quote, dueling on the lead, but they both held. So I don't know. He's capable, especially when he gets long lead.
00:10:23
Speaker
But in a short-price horse, I don't love. i don't want to just because he might be the long leader. Because if someone goes, be like, why did use this horse? The two hasn't run since February of 25, so a year and a half almost, on the bench. But it's Chad Brown, so...
00:10:38
Speaker
I wouldn't worry too much in a survey layout, but the horse is six years old now. Ships at every single race I've upgraded based on something going on. Like, his last race was in a grade three, first of all. Was bumped at the start, shuffled some road on the backstretch. But each race has either had something go on at the beginning of the race had a wide trip or two back at this level, lost an unlucky bob. again, this was a long time ago. So, you know, layoff words at short prices are often good horses to bet against. These ones I like, which I talked about before I had all the spotlight here. And that's the seven candy town at eight to one.
00:11:16
Speaker
These are words who last year, i've probably wouldn't love the horse so much, but I do think that the last race that this horse ran last year, November 1st at Gulfstream was pretty good.
00:11:27
Speaker
on And I upgraded that race, saved ground, but had to wait on the turn and and the stretch for a while, I thought. And really was visually impressive closing. mean, that was a really sharp close. and I was excited for this horse to get back in June. The problem was it was a short price off a layoff at a similar level, or maybe even a little tougher, but very similar level.
00:11:50
Speaker
I think those are numbers of two optional cleaning allowance, optional cleaner, but I think they allow horses who haven't won in the year to also run. So you could get horses who won many times, but maybe off-runs anyway. So it's a similar level. Anyway, the horse probably needed that race and also had a slightly these slow start, almost three wide the whole way. So...
00:12:10
Speaker
The fact that he needed that race, now I'm getting a better price. I love the field. I kind of love Kingentown here at 8-1. That's the rest I'm going to key in. I'll let you add anything or rebut me or anything you want, and then i'll just talk briefly about how I'd bet the race, and then we can now we can move on after.
00:12:27
Speaker
Right. ah Yeah, I stand corrected on the the hope that there's, you know, speedy pace because actually Yinzer, I have that one third and my comment was potential load and speed.
00:12:42
Speaker
I'm just hoping that the one horse with Reilu Gutierrez, Starship Titan, ah realizes is he's on the rail and breaks sharply and can at least quicken the pace, wishful thinking. um And a horse that you hadn't mentioned that I like neck right under the three Waui World is the eight at six to one Plenza, ridden 41-year-old Jose Lasgano, which is one for his mounts at Saratoga so far.
00:13:19
Speaker
And I just, so you know, you look at this horse, the horse ran nine times has, has earned $1.2 million. dollars But I guess when you win a $2 million dollars race at Kentucky downs, that kind of helps with your bank roll.
00:13:34
Speaker
ah I just think that last race coming off the bench, you can improve off of again, unfortunately he's a closer ah and, know,
00:13:46
Speaker
is probably pace dependent. So hopefully, as you had said, uh, Yins are maybe low speed, but hopefully comes up short and some of these horses off the pace, uh, can get the job done.
00:14:00
Speaker
Um, Do you have anything else to add? Yeah, just talk about how I bet the race. And I do like the one little bit, even though he's off a layoff as well. I thought that last race was really impressive. Yeah, stepping up and layoff, but he won't even price on the one, so I don't mind taking the horse off a layoff with a price.
00:14:17
Speaker
I thought he'd be in a pretty good field for that level. A bunch boys came back to win, or at least a couple of them, against good competition. But anyway... I'm trying to try and keep the famous in this race. Maybe I'm wrong. and Maybe it's two four and you can go home. But I'm keeping 7 a lot in my bets.
00:14:32
Speaker
But i'm going use a combination of the 1, Starship Titan, the 3, Wally World, the 8, Plensa, and obviously the 7, Camrytown, I mentioned. I'll even throw in the 9 a little bit, Ranger Battalion. I don't really care for the words too much. But Omaha Beach...
00:14:48
Speaker
Pretty good church sire from what I gather. And I don't love the favorites. So I'm just trying to find someone to beat them. So what I'll actually do here, which I know a lot of people scoff at, i might even box those five horses. I know a five horse box is crazy. But when you're not using the two heavy favorites, I don't mind doing that for a buck. It'll cost me 20 bucks.
00:15:07
Speaker
But then I'll key down on the horse I like. So after that, I'll probably box 1378. seventy then I'll box one, three, seven. And then what I'll also do is seven with all those horses, and then seven with the one, the three, the eight, a little more than the nine, et cetera. So I'm spreading, but then I'm keying the seven. So my banking is at the two and the four and not in the top two or three, because I'll do similar tries. And if there are, then you know I'm screwed and I lose. um Depending on the budget, some people might miss a lot of money to bet in the race. So depending on your budget, you might want to cut it down a little bit, maybe
00:15:41
Speaker
You don't need that nine or something like that. You just box four horses or three horses if you want. And again, I'm not usually a fan of boxing several horses, but when you're not using the two favorites and have all prices, that's not a bad thing.
00:15:54
Speaker
Like, yes, most of my bets will be king of seven with those horses. So I'll have maybe a two or three or $4 exacto, maybe even more if he comes in. And if the others come in together, I might only have a dollar, but I'm willing to do that.
00:16:07
Speaker
and try get these two favorites. Even though i know the two can win, I know the four coin, but I'm not in love with either the one. One for the last one, because I just think has been up on paces that haven't been that sharp and i don't know what he's been running against. So that's my two cents on the race. I'll probably spread in the pick five. We'll talk a little bit more about that as we go through. But as far as pick five, I try and spread and beat the two and four here.
00:16:27
Speaker
Okay.

Race Predictions: Boson vs Gypsy Art?

00:16:28
Speaker
Sounds good. Three, eight, four for me. I might have a pick five as a suggestion at the end of the podcast. um On to race eight, the second leg of the late pick five Saratoga on Saturday.
00:16:43
Speaker
it's a five and a furlong turf event, to allow on a $120,000. Now I'm going to win one other than allowance on the turf with the two-horse Boson, the lukewarm seven-to-two favorite here.
00:16:59
Speaker
I actually went to the outside with to Gypsy Art, four-to-one second choice. I just think she should, this time around, this is the race where it should have a decent pace to close into. um His turf numbers continue to climb off of the layoff. This is his fourth fourth start after the layoff.
00:17:24
Speaker
And he's always been well backed. He shows up every race. And that's why i think he's the one who hopefully will finish on top The eight Gypsy Heart, four to one. I do like the the the two Boson underneath. um And the other horse that I like is Quandro, over the four, six to one morning line. Non-winner of two life.
00:17:55
Speaker
ah broke its maiden in its 16th start. And again, Jose Lascano, the hopes ride on Jose Lascano with this mid mid-priced horse. So I'd go 8-2-4 with the 8 as my top pick. Eric?
00:18:17
Speaker
What do you say? Yeah, and I forgot to say last race, the horse I liked, Camrytown, the seven in race seven, was a plethora horse who was ice cold, we said. So maybe that's good thing. But yeah, I'm getting the price. I'm not going bet him a two to one or something like that or or three to one. All right. Anyway.
00:18:33
Speaker
Uh, I thought I was going to be a little clever with the two and then I see he's a morning line favorite. So it didn't excite me as much. this like ah I can be quicker because it's not a race. i would bet vertically. Um, I do like the two, I guess, boatsin if that's how you say it, yeah, last race, better than looks. The one at fairgrounds, it was back in January. So it's been a lot off, but, uh, same grab, but got checked and, uh, shuffled back during the race um significantly during the turn i should say which is during the race uh but this horse loved saratoga i mean the two lings at saratoga were really really strong races yeah i guess new york brands but still uh speed figures were superior as well if you were to those but um yeah i think this hor horse for the course has a little speed and a ton but a little speed and stay close so you know i do like boasting other than that i
00:19:19
Speaker
I'm not putting this race vertically. would probably just try and get through this race with either two or four horses. The other ones I would use would be the five mission in probable. And I know this horse is stepping up in class, coming out of an optional claim or starter allowance. right And this is a regular allowance for example. But...
00:19:42
Speaker
The horse ran really well, I thought. um Often gets off to a slow start, that's an issue, so that's something to worry about. and Needs a little pace here, but it was his first sprint since way back in his first start, I wouldn't count back on him at the start and just worked out. so Low sprint. I thought it pretty good. I don't love the words in this field, especially at this level. So why not take a horse who I think might be improving and also run a really good race. And the other one is seven I would use. Grunge, who does have some speed here. Yeah, on the Maidens, two back, and this is allowance one X, but it wasn't an easy lead. It didn't get pressed some. It wasn't the toughest and held okay. In the last race,
00:20:23
Speaker
um was uh on the synthetic so i don't know if you want to ignore that or or not um it was a race that really fell apart and this horse was pretty close to that really strong pace and you the stakes race i mean those are famous don't how tough the stakes race but so the seven grounds i want to use especially in new york where so many times no jockeys go and i can definitely see in a race where there's like you you a little bit speed, Kondo's got some speed, the three sweeping shadow. I can see the seven Jamie Rodriguez getting aggressive and just going and, you know, wanting this field potentially.
00:20:57
Speaker
But he also has a better to sit. So I'd like to set an up front in my second pick if I was wonking them ah behind the two. And then the eight, I use Gypsy Art. I'm kind of chalking out here, but I'm trying to beat the chalk in the first leg. I'm going to try and beat the chalk in the last leg so of a pick five. So I'm okay you know adding that horse as well. on gpsy out You kind of talked about the horse.
00:21:15
Speaker
I had a little trouble early last time. I don't know. The horse loses at short plays a lot, but in this field, makes a lot of sense. So I'm just going to spread here a little bit in the pick five and hope I can get through it with the two, five, seven, eight.
00:21:28
Speaker
That's pretty much all I got. vertical best for me in this race. Okay. Don't have to belabor that point. um Interesting. On the leg three, race nine, Saturday at Saratoga.
00:21:41
Speaker
One mile on the main track for New York's bread allowance. ah One other than $105,000.
00:21:53
Speaker
Oddly enough, it's our third morning line favorite. That is the deuce. a Tricky business at two to one. I'll let you go first as far as your opinions, if you wish.
00:22:04
Speaker
Well, this is a favorite that I like. So I'm on tricky business here. This is a single for me in this race. Tricky business. I only had two races. First race, May 10th.
00:22:16
Speaker
Again, state red, moving special weight. That ran really well first out. Just kind of dominated that field. A couple of Moons horses were in that field as well. Then went to the Pegasus last time. Now, I'm not going to say it was the toughest Pegasus, but it was a significantly tougher than this race.
00:22:32
Speaker
And I liked the horse that day as well. I bet Tricky Business in the Pegasus. There were two words I liked. actually had the winner, too. I can't remember. want to say it was... a Was this horse a six? I think it was a six horse, but it doesn't really matter. I'm just trying to jive my memory.
00:22:46
Speaker
But Tricky Business had a lot of trouble in that race. Checked significantly at the start and then shuffled back on the first turn and really lost all chance. ah To me, that's ah ah either a throw race, an upgrade, whatever you want to say. I'm a big fan of Tricky Business. They're adding blinkers. The horse has speed, so should be able to make his own trip.
00:23:06
Speaker
If he decides to sit off of the other speed here, which I guess is the five is the main speed, King Pharaoh. So the horse can sit, it can go after him if it's slow. I like tricky business, and that's my single in this race.
00:23:19
Speaker
I'll throw it in you, and then maybe I'll talk for a second at end if to bet the race. Go ahead.

Is Tricky Business the Next Big Winner?

00:23:23
Speaker
Yeah. I think there's enough pace in here that I, that i with a wing and a prayer, i landed on the โ€“ Six-horse Sunday boy, morning line.
00:23:36
Speaker
I like the fact that ah he's coming back. He's going to run on Lasix again at this level two back. That was on the turf, though. And I like the jock upgrade to Jose Ortiz.
00:23:53
Speaker
When he did run on the dirt, ah of know he won a registered New York Stallion series race, ran third, second. So he's competitive ah against the these New York breads.
00:24:10
Speaker
Still looking for his first win against winners, as ah everyone in here is except for the one, the three, and the four.
00:24:22
Speaker
So ah just trying not to play the chalk, even though I kind of agree with you, Eric. ah Tricky business is the one definitely the one to beat.
00:24:36
Speaker
I'll go with the six, Sunday boy in race nine. Anything else you want to add? Yeah, i mean, I'm going to try and beat the four Toscano here. So i understand the horse is capable of winning this race, but if the five to two morning line is correct, I'm going to be against that horse. I just thought had a very good trip last time. Yes, it was a layoff, so the horse couldn't improve, but it's only five-year-old, and I don't know. I just think the two are significantly better. So I don't want to take a short price on a five to two horse here with the two. So, If I bet vertically, I would keep a two on top, and I'd try and get a few prices with them. While the seven looks okay as well, the seven actually ran against Judge Bruchet, I guess. ah The seven, Judge Bruchet ran against the two Tricky Business in that maiden race, but that was a third race for Judge Bruchet. While he did have a slight lunge at the beginning, i don't think it was a huge excuse, and I thought Tricky Business was much better, and Tricky Business...
00:25:38
Speaker
was it was his first start sorry and the seven already had a couple starts under his belt so i just think the two a better horse than the seven so um i could be wrong but i'm gonna keep the two and i'd probably try and get the five and six in there you already spoke about the six sunday boy uh the five king farrow who yeah coming off a maiden win but uh broken last time so had a slow start because of that and changed a solid pace and stills in now pretty easily I don't know what he'd meet necessarily, but could be the loan speed. So if the two doesn't go after him, I can see the five hanging on for, you know, definitely a piece of this. So I'm mostly going to do two over the five, six in bets.
00:26:16
Speaker
And while I don't condone betting short prices to win, if trading business is two to one or higher, I'm, I'll probably make a win bet as well. I'll single him in pick fives and any multi-laced bets that I see. So I'm running a lot on tricky business here. Short price, yes, but hopefully not an overwhelming favorite in the morning line is correct.
00:26:35
Speaker
that's Awesome. Wonderful. three Three legs down, two to go. And this should be a spirited conversation in this race. ah It's on your 3-5 winning line. I'm trying to figure out. I'll get there. I'll get there. Hold on.

Fort George's Chances in the Bowling Green Stakes

00:26:51
Speaker
Yeah, just ah this is ah we're talking about race 10, the fourth leg of Saturday's Saratoga Late Pick 5.
00:26:59
Speaker
It is the feature, the grade 2 bowling green stakes going one one mile and three eights on the turf.
00:27:09
Speaker
And um I know the Bowling Green stakes refers to the Bowling Green in New York. Now i I'm hitting Eric blind with this question.
00:27:20
Speaker
In which state is the University of Bowling Green or Bowling Green State University? Well, you're hitting blind. i could swear there are two Bowling Greens. And I want to say there's at least one Ohio and one's in Kentucky, but I could be way off.
00:27:39
Speaker
um You're correct on both. Oh, I didn't look that up either. Yeah. yeah that that The Bowling Green Ohio is just due south of Toledo, which is in the extreme northwest of Ohio.

And I know there's a Bowling Green in Kentucky. And I always thought that that was the Bowling Green of the you know great Mid-American conference. Yeah. But I i digress. Go ahead. haven't watched much college football recently. i'm not a huge college football fan, but when I was younger, I was, and I seem to remember watching Bowling Green. I think they had some decent years, but I could be way off.
00:28:18
Speaker
I don't know which one that was. I want to say the one in Kentucky, but โ€“ that's what That's what I always assumed, let's say. yeah But okay, so so did that was just a little, you know, take a break from horse racing for a second. a little useless trivia. Maybe you can use the cocktail parties or whatever.
00:28:35
Speaker
But okay, so um before the mooring line came out um ah Myself, Eric, and our good friend, Big T, we were on this group text, and ay Big T ah mentioned this race, the fact that, wait a minute, there's a turf race, a grade two turf race at Saratoga, and there's no Chad Brown runners in there?
00:29:00
Speaker
And I responded by saying, well, that's because the horse in there should be three to five morning line. And they all laughed and told me I was full of it. So um at nine to five morning line is the horse that I think should be my single, ah the four horse Fort George.
00:29:23
Speaker
All I needed to see was that this horse ran behind Rebels Romance, a two-time Breeders' Cup turf winner. And then in its most recent start, these are all at Maidon back and in late winter, ran behind Ombudsman, who just wound up walking away with the Prince of Wales at Ascot and is probably...
00:29:48
Speaker
the best turf distance turf horse. ah And I assume that he may be coming to run in Brewer's Cup this year. So just on that fact alone, don't see any horses in here that have been running against that kind of competition.
00:30:08
Speaker
Now, the caveat is that, okay, the second choice, five to two, Maury in line, old crazy bones, the one, could probably go gate the wire. So that's, that's the caveat, but I'll stake my wonderful reputation ah on single lane, the four horse Fort George in this one. So Eric will now tell you why there's no way this horse has a shot to win this race. That's not what I'm going to do. I might poke a few holes, but you no shot.
00:30:43
Speaker
or Not saying no shot, of course not. You know the case, aren't you, Pete, who's run against Rebel Romance and Bedsman, if that's how you say it. You said it much better. The other ones who run well in some really tough races and seem to always get a wide trip. Last race had a three-wide trip.
00:31:00
Speaker
My question would be this jockey. Now, this might be the greatest jockey in Europe. I really don't know. I actually looked up some info and all I found was had some issues like eight years ago and got help for it, which is good. So I hope the job keeps doing well.
00:31:16
Speaker
But the shot keeps taking the words wide for no reason. And why, what is this, three turns assume? I got to look back. I'm pretty sure it's the three turns. Maybe going to go... three wide around these turns, and if so, it probably won't win. So, I actually prefer the one, all crazy bonus, between, you know, that and, also the fact that the horse has, well, I haven't watched the horse before, it's not that terrible, I guess, but, I'm really not familiar with the trainer, or the jockey, which, that might be great, I don't follow European racing, but,
00:31:45
Speaker
at a short of price. Yeah, the horse can win, but why is he that much better than the one? I mean, it was just competition camp, but I do like the one old crazy bones, or bone, one bone. This horse started running, and once this horse was claimed by Mike Maker, this horse has been, i don't want to say monster, but really good. It's had three stars for Maker. In Augustine Ellis, in the prep for the ah turf cup at Kentucky Downs, this horse ran really well. Three wide on the turns, loaded,
00:32:15
Speaker
lost momentum on the second turn. i can't believe the rest of that. After we hit the top the stretch, I major trouble that Ellis Park race through now. And then came and smashed it up at Kentucky Downs, ran a great race there. Then had the layoff until May, brought him back in May, and I thought I'd really well probably needed the race I mean, the horse has run well at a mile the 16th as well as longer, so not going say it was too short for the horse, but probably won the race and run well anyway. I mean, I just think this horse is going to run really the race. You mentioned the possible pace advantage for being predestive aggressive. This horse is either going be a long on the lead or sitting ground right behind a relatively slow pace, so I think this is a horse that I'm really fond of here. So I can even see singling Old Crazy Bomb. I love the two the race before, and it gets a little chalky over the second choice. Actually, Old Crazy is the third choice in this race. So don't want to say all over Old Crazy It's not like I'm going to love the horse, but because of the price, it wasn't for the price, I'd love the horse. So anyway, I like Old Crazy Bomb here. I guess we should mention the sixth, Minaret Station, who is the...
00:33:23
Speaker
I wanted to mention him as well because I thought maybe he'd be sneaky and exotic, but hell, he's two to one second choice. Never been you know this this far, but I think the horse just keeps getting better and better. He hasn't hit his ceiling.
00:33:44
Speaker
Yeah, I studied, but and I'm sure you did too, before the morning one came out. And I had this horse at 4 to 1 in the morning line. I'm sure I'm wrong because David, who does the morning one, is very good. But I was a little spondy. Wow, I'm looking actually happy. But it was 1-0. I mean, really well in the bourbon grade 2. I mean, that was a visually impressive race.
00:34:03
Speaker
That was in October of 2024. It always hasn't done anything wrong since other than been off a lot. But your team awards has to stretch out. I don't know, short price, doing something for the first time here. I'm not saying the six can't win, but I don't really want that horse at a short price. So I'm really leaning on the one here. And, you know, as far as betting the race, I don't know if there's a race I would bet. If the one's five to two, that's another race where might actually bet a win bet on a short price. But um as far as betting the race,
00:34:33
Speaker
I don't think I can bet them if I think the 1, 4, and 6 are the main players here, and they're going come in, like two or three of them are going come in the top three. I just don't like it. I mean, know some people going to go, oh, I'll bet 1, 4, and that's it.
00:34:45
Speaker
And that's fine if that's how you bet, but I'm not like a chalky bettor like that. If I think that's going to happen, i'll probably sit out the race because you have to be white so often to hit on two chalks in row or three chalks to get the triple. So if I want to add some long shots, it would be the two, Solal, Volant, who I thought ran pretty well last time with wide trip in Cape Hanlon, if that's you pronounce it. I don't know, whatever that is. Cape Hanlopen.
00:35:11
Speaker
Thank you. If it was a Mid-Atlantic area, would know that. You need to be a Mid-Atlantic resident to know how to pronounce that. Well, very briefly in the DRF here, the name, there's no vowels. Yeah.
00:35:24
Speaker
And my eyesight's not too good either, so I can barely see it anyway. But anyway, you have the two silver ones today. Coming off a wide trip, obviously class test here. I don't love the horse in this spot, but, you know, four-year-old improving. i think the horse has a shot. And then Carson's running the five, who used to run really well. Again, you're going way back to 2024. But the one or two times going this distance, ah one time,
00:35:49
Speaker
Was it twice? Yeah. It just went really well. One jockey derby, whatever that is, the JC, jockey club derby imitational. I don't even know what that is. up here Actually, it was at Aqueduct, sorry. And I think to turn mystical is proving to be a really nice horse as well. So I think the five has an outside shot too. So if I bet this race, I would just have to decide but the four and the six are not gonna run great.
00:36:14
Speaker
I don't know if I wanna do that, to be honest, so I might just sit out the race or let all crazy ones win, but if I decide that it's not worth taking the four and the six, then I would go one with the two five. i probably box the three of them just in case comes in two five. I don't, know, bombs away. I don't want to not have anything. I'll probably only have a dollar or two that way. And then keep the one with those two horses, probably box, and then put the one on top extra. And that's how i would play it if I decide to do that. And if I decide that the four and the six are not going to be beaten, then, you know, probably will not bet the race. I assume the morning line accurate. I'll take a small stab. I'm not going to bet a ton into this race, but, you know, I'll try the one and then the one with the two, five and hopefully the four, this is wild trip and something, you know, I don't anything to happen to the horse, but something's, you know, not right with the trip and hopefully the six can't go the distance, but I can easily even crow here and I understand that and it comes in, you know, four, six, one or something like that. That's it. Sorry.
00:37:09
Speaker
no No, no, no, no, no problem. All right. So, uh, Moving on to the last race, the last leg of the pick five on late pick five on Saturday at Saratoga.
00:37:24
Speaker
i don't know about you, but Eric, but I couldn't ah decide on one.

Classic Commander: The Choice for Race Eleven

00:37:30
Speaker
I do have a horse that I settled on a top pick, but I see anywhere from four to six horses that could possibly win this final leg. So maybe it's good that I'm singling โ€“ a horse in the race before and then my pick five will blow up and I won't have to worry about that. But no if i can jump if I can jump in on that, I think you did it right. I don't necessarily agree with the horse series, but I think you did it right by if you're betting this pick five singling Fort George. Yeah. Not that I agree with the horse, but in a race, we have three heavy favorites. Like you can lose all three and be like, oh I'll probably get through the race, but that really hurts you in other legs. So if you have,
00:38:11
Speaker
If you're beating like all the chalk in the other legs or most the legs, sure, you can do that. It's not ideal. and But if you're really confident that no other chalk is coming in or three ways you're going to beat a chalk, then sure, I guess you can do that. But if you're not beating chalk in every leg or just about every leg, then I would just single a horse there and or two. I'm single horse there. I'm sorry, in that leg and go whatever you want here. I'm just i'm curious to hear, he was 11. was seeking alternatives, and I just don't know. There's one horse I like a lot, but I just couldn't find alternatives even though wanted to. So let me hear who are the six who can win, or or tell me some of them.
00:38:48
Speaker
i Well, I settled on on the six horse before the win as my top pick, six to one morning line. Wow. Wow. I'm familiar with this trainer. She's a Maryland trainer. She, she actually owned and train a Philly that you just loved. I'm being sarcastic.
00:39:08
Speaker
Wound up winning Breeders' Cup, Speed on the Turf, Caravelle.
00:39:14
Speaker
She wound selling the horse to Bobby Flay, I think, way back. But I... I just think that, you know, it's a New new York bridge. Obviously, you know, loves bringing it up here for the New York money because of having the New York bread. and I think Jamie Rodriguez is going to be the Dylan Davis of a few years back in the Saratoga meet. I think he's going to do well, and he's not going to be riding favorite. So whenever he does win, you're going to be you're gonna get a decent ah ROI. So that's my bold prediction for the Saratoga meet. Jamie Rodriguez will finish in the top five.
00:40:00
Speaker
of the jockey standings, considering you have Jose, Irad, Pratt, you know, and then a dozen others. the same ah Shout out to our friend Dave, Big Dave in Virginia, and the sixth best Saratoga jockey, Junior Alvarado.
00:40:18
Speaker
So that's an inside joke. um But yeah, so ah I landed on the six as my top pick. But the more I looked, the more I ah gave excuses to others. Luckily enough, outside of, you know, the five, who is the three to one morning line favorite, I also liked the two, eight one classic commander. Yeah, you know, eight eight times a maiden. But it's like, you know, the horse โ€“ As you like to say, as it uses horses rank, uh, bumped, you know, pulled somebody has got to win this race. And I'm not sure if it's going to be a ah ah first time, or even though on the outside, I love any horse with street sense in the bloodlines going two turns.
00:41:07
Speaker
Linda rice, uh, one of her Achilles heel might be the turf. She doesn't win a whole lot on the, on the turf, but, um, that That's one of the later ones.
00:41:18
Speaker
A 20 to 1 that might raise your eyebrows is the 7 Tislawry. I just think second time Lasix. You go back um that second race back when you ran up the track 29 lengths by 5.
00:41:36
Speaker
I don't know if the DRF short comment has equine ambulance, uh, ambulance on there. So obviously something went wrong with the horse there, know, first start going six furlongs on the turf at aqueduct at nine to one, ran a nice race stretching out to a mile and sixteenth. I think it'll improve off of that first try. And if you're going to give me 20 to one, I definitely use that one. So,
00:42:06
Speaker
um In my pick five, which ah I would use the two, five, six, seven. If I wanted to go deeper, i'd throw in the 10 and 11. So I think I covered everybody except maybe ah the three and the four and the one. So you'll you'll like one of those.
00:42:28
Speaker
No, not necessarily. um yeah The horse I like here the most is the two, Classic Commander. He touched upon some trouble. This horse got squeezed really way back early last race. He then was ranked some on the back stretch as well, but you know that start, and it wasn't really his fault. Sometimes the horse just has trouble out the gate, but This horse wasn't really his fault and got checked back really far and was very impressive, I thought, to get up for a second in that race. I just thought this horse was going be a shorter price. I thought, I have 5-1 in my morning line, so I'm more worried won't get 8-1. But if I do, there's a horse I'll bet to win and keep that horse together. My problem with this race is I don't know the favorites. I just don't know. Usually when I'm betting a race, I'm looking at the favorites and deciding do I want to beat the favorite.
00:43:15
Speaker
Do I want to beat the second favorite? Do I like the favorite? Et cetera. So, these are the ways where I don't have a strong opinion on the favorites. And we touched upon them, but the five card stint with Fabian Pratt, 3-1. And that was in the same race as the two. First run five, got squeezed down early. was mostly sitting down with two wide. So, I mean, had a decent trip after that.
00:43:39
Speaker
But was a first time starter and could improve. The problem is, i don't know, I went way too into the weeds, but Jorge and Broly, I looked at second time starters going long in the turf for the second time. And it seems like all these horses run better or the same the first time out. They didn't improve second time out. So I don't know, the one where they go, first time I'm mad,
00:43:57
Speaker
second time should improve in this field that's good enough to win this definitely i just don't know his horses don't seem to improve sticking out not that he's a bad train right now but he probably has him pretty geared up for that first time so i'm a real iffy on him and the 10 coach riding at five to two on morning line that's a child brown who won some pretty good races and in fact my comments before the morning line was solid But way off, is it worth a short price? I still haven't answered that question, I don't think. But last time, I altered check rate on the second turn. Still got up for a second, so I a trouble trip. And in both of his ratings, there were really no speed at all the race, where it was controlled mostly on the front end, and you were really beneficial on the front end. So I've kind of looked at 10, but at 5 to 2, don't know. So I'm going to bet the 2 here. I'm not going to use a 5 on the 10. If I do bet the 2, I might use one of them, but i'm not going to use both. And I was trying to find out the horses. And, you know, we made a little bit of a case for the studding, so maybe I can throw them in. The four, who doesn't look very good on paper, I don't want to start on dirt, didn't do much. But, you know, on a race course or in a circuit where more never goes, i mean, the four you would think would be the speed of the race coming out of the sprint, but you never know turf.
00:45:12
Speaker
I hope to see the turf work report. Worked four and 53 and three, which sounds like you could run that. But, you know, dogs were up, so God knows why the horse was going. maybe it wasn't as bad as it looks, so I'll check the work report. But maybe throw in the four as a long shot here. You said the eight. I just, I don't know. mean, yeah, why didn't...
00:45:33
Speaker
Maybe 11 marks from here, the first time starter. Now, Linda's not great first time going long. She's one for 20. First time going long in the grass. And one for 10 with three rolls. But um the hoards are the outside, which is probably not a ideal, I would think, with the turn coming up fairly quickly. They start a little before the finish line, but still it's fairly quick to turn. And...
00:45:53
Speaker
Again, she's not great with firsts, but David made the 11 and 5 to 1 in the morning line, which implies that didn't think this horse is live, and he's pretty sharp, so maybe there's something to it. I don't know. So maybe I'll throw the horse in. Again, this is where you have to decide. Do you want one or neither the favorites? If you want both, to me, I'm not betting it. But if you can get rid of one, and I just don't know which one I want to get rid of, if not both. Usually if you're iffy, you just get rid all the favorites.
00:46:21
Speaker
If they're in short price and they're iffy, get rid of them. I would tend to get rid of the five and keep the ten here, though. Again, I'm going to keep it two. So I'm going to something like two with five. four, seven, 10, 11, something like that. And I've key him in exactos triples with those horses. And assuming two is eight to one, I'll probably get more with the 10, I think is is pretty legit here, to be honest. So in the pick five, that's, again, it really depends on the other legs here. mean, we'll just, as we finish up, I'll let you finish on this race if you haven't, but then maybe we'll touch upon pick five tickets just for last two minutes.
00:46:57
Speaker
Okay, yeah. So, yeah, I guess I'll start with mine. So, ah based on the horses I had mentioned and whatever, since I had said i I'd single, I i would spread it a little on the first three races using i this this particular ticket would be a $36 ticket, where in the seventh race, I'd use the three, four, and eight.
00:47:25
Speaker
And in the eighth race, use the two and the eight. In the ninth race, use the two, four, six. And then it gets down to race 10. My single is the four.
00:47:38
Speaker
And then I would use four horses in this last race, the two, five, six, and seven. Now, If you want to go deeper and for our Wasabi friends who have shared tickets and stuff, if you want to invest in $81 ticket, I would add the four horse in race eight and also add in race 11, the 10 and the 11, and that would take you to an $81 ticket.
00:48:16
Speaker
All right. You know what? think this be a good exercise. I'll try and do really quickly. Can you walk through the ticket race by race again? I just want kind of comment on the efficiency, things like that, structure. Yeah. I'm not trying to rip you apart out. You went so quick. It wasn't bad what you did. I just, I had trouble falling because I was thinking about being. All right. So race seven first slide. What say there? Sure. Okay. So race seven, the first. Just what, you know, what you plan on doing here.
00:48:44
Speaker
Okay, so race seven, i have a three to one, a five to one, and a six to one I'm using. right, so we're using the four, three, four. and eight.
00:48:55
Speaker
and So out of the, so you're leaving out three, four, eight. So you're leaving out the two who is the morning line favorite. So it's not terrible. mean, you're using like the B, C, D, I guess the second, third, and fourth choice.
00:49:07
Speaker
But, you know, you're leaving out the morning line favorite. So it's not terrible. If you really feel confident, one those three is going to win. and And in reality, I originally just, I left out the four, but you tell me in your mind, if this is right or wrong,
00:49:20
Speaker
I threw the four because I'm thinking, okay, if this horse turns out to be low in speed and walks on the front end, then that's the only reason why I see that scenario where he wins.
00:49:35
Speaker
So... should i not go there with the four that's really up to you it depends on how you know what the likelihood of what happening is if you think that's fairly likely or you know 33 chance that happens or 30 then go for it if not then don't but um the fact that we're moving out the two It's not terrible. It's not the greatest structure of the world, but it's not a terrible thing. Let's go on to race eight, you said, and race second leg. Right, race eight. um know what you said I'm using the two, who's the lukewarm morning line, seven to two favorite.
00:50:11
Speaker
The four, which is six to one, and the eight, which is actually is my top pick at four to one. All right, so you're a little chalky there, but there's no heavy chalk. Yeah.
00:50:24
Speaker
Again, if you feel strong with those three, you're going to win. I would say that's okay. are using the two favorites. um But it's not the best line if you have prices elsewhere or getting favorites elsewhere. don't think it's terrible. We are leading up the one cycling nine to two there.
00:50:41
Speaker
But mom you're taking the the favorite, the second favorite, and the fourth favorite, which, again, depending on what you do in other legs doesn't always mean bad. But I prefer your first race structure the second race. I'm not even commenting on the horses that you're using, just the the structure. um Let's go to race nine.
00:50:59
Speaker
Race nine. So, yeah, um even though my top pick, the six, is six to one, I'm also using the first, you know, the morning line favorite and the second choice as well.
00:51:12
Speaker
Now, I, this is the leg. Is it the leg that I said? Oh no. Yeah. So it it was those three that I was using. So two, four, six. Yes. So basically the two of the and the two favorites then like the cold fourth choice. So here's where I'm starting to not love your your ticket. And again, it's not about the horse you use, but yeah,
00:51:35
Speaker
In this sequence, I mean, first of all, one thing, you're going three by three by three, which I'm not usually a fan of because โ€“ Well, hold on. Time out. In race eight, I was only doing two eight.
00:51:49
Speaker
Oh, okay. The four was for the bigger ticket. But either way, even with two, like... Three by two by three, so forth. Here's my issue. You're making it so you have to be that perfect here. Does that make sense? What's that? making it like you have to be almost perfect in your handicapping. Like, when you're using two to three towards the race, it's like, right, I got to right this race. I got to right this race. I got to right in that race. And there's only races where you aren't right and want to satisfied. I'm not saying you have to go, like, seven deep in the leg, but I'd rather...
00:52:19
Speaker
I know you have a single coming up, but I'd rather have or two singles even and then be able to, in a race where I'm not sure, spread a little more, especially don't like the favorites. So, like, I'm not saying have to do this, but maybe in the first leg, if the two is the favorite you don't like, maybe even add some long shots or whatever. Maybe have to make the two more expensive, but that's where you're losing the low on this ticket with, like, three by two by three. I'm really not spending a lot, so it's not terrible.
00:52:47
Speaker
um It's now you're spending 80, well, you're smaller tickets, it's not to be 80 bucks or like that. Close. So, what was that, race nine? That was race nine. Race 10 is my single, goal the four horse. Which is fine. I mean, it's the favorite, but it's okay. your single. And you I would say would have gone,
00:53:05
Speaker
1-4-6. I didn't mention 2-4-6, but even if you want, if you want to make 1-4-6, I'm not worried, man. This is, you know, first all, even if you hit this thing, not going to make a ton of money, and you're going to have to write, like, one out of every five tickets like this, and are you going to write on one out of every five, pick five tickets? Probably, I'm not. I mean, maybe you are, but most people aren't going to be. So, so that's fine if want send us a favor, but, you know, it's fine if you think the favor's going to win. And then the last race,
00:53:31
Speaker
That's where I spread on on the small ticket, which is $36. go which is ah a six to one a three to one an eight to one and a twenty to one All right, so you're not using the morning line favorite. The 10 you said is not being used. Correct. that ten The 10 would be on the bigger ticket with the 11.
00:53:56
Speaker
Right. I'm fine. Again, it's not about the specific course that talking about, just as far as the structure. I would be fine with that because you're trying to beat the favorite there, and especially Chad Don favorite would probably be on almost everyone's ticket. So I'm i'm fine with that. mean, you kind have co-favorites, but I'm okay with that, Link. So the last two legs I like more than your first couple legs, but it's not awful like that. So in two of the five legs, I'm not using the morning line favorites.
00:54:24
Speaker
so in in two of the five legs i'm not using the morningline favorite
00:54:31
Speaker
Correct. And those are the ways that I like a little better than the others for you. you As far as I go, like with seven, I'm just going to try and like when I'm betting a pick five, the same as vertical. And again, I don't want to come across as I know everything and I'm an expert. I don't want to say that necessarily. You know, I've had a lot of experience and learned from a lot of good people.
00:54:50
Speaker
But in the first log, I'm going to just try and hit the favorites. And I'm going to use as many words as I have to to beat the favorites in this case. So maybe the two or the four, win, win, seven, and I'm out. And then if I want better to pick four, I can, or I can be done and just by vertically. But I'm to spread to beat them. So going to use the one. I'm going to use the three. I'm going to use the seven. use the eight. And I'm not even throwing the nine. and So I'm four to five deep in that race. And yeah, like counting down the seven the most.

So if I want to get ballsy and if you're someone who know can afford to get extra tickets and press and this and that, you know maybe I'll get an extra with the seven single on the ticket. In race eight, this is the one where I'm not that efficient. I'm going to go probably two, five, seven, eight. So I'm using four horses. I'm not using the second or third. No, that's not true. I'm using the, guess it was like three co-favorites, if you will. I'm using two of them, and then I'm not using the fourth favorite. So I'm in the top four.
00:55:44

I'm in the two of the top four, the two eight. I'm also throwing the five, seven. So I think I'm okay there in that leg. So I'm i'm about five by four. Then in race nine, I'm signaling the two. Yes, he's going favorite, but I'm just signaling similar similar to what you're doing with race 10. So you know I'm still, what's that, five times four for 50 cents, we're 10 bucks here. And then in race 10, the bowling green, I like one old crazy bone. I can see even signaling him as well.
00:56:11
Speaker
This is where I have to make a decision. This is what's going to keep me maybe from betting this pick five or or really having trouble. I kind of just want to get through this leg. So I'm tempted to go like one, four, maybe even the six.
00:56:26
Speaker
But I know that's not efficient. I don't know that have more prices. So if I single the two in race 11 at eight to one, then I'll use the one, four, six here. And I'll probably, because it won't be much, I'll probably throw the two and the five also, which I know is an inefficient leg. But I feel I've been fairly efficient up to now. And I'm signaling eight to one last leg. So that's one option.
00:56:48
Speaker
The other option is I can single old crazy bones and go really deep in the last leg. My only problem with that is i hate singling two ways in a row in a pick five because maybe me just bet the double instead, but I'll probably bet a double also if it's not really cheap from race nine to 10. So I looked at, you know, definitely old crazy bones. Then I got to decide, do I want to just survive this thing and use the four? Yeah. maybe in the six but i'd probably need more four than six i'd probably go one four if i was being inefficient here and then two and five i can add mean again i i just got this out on race 10 11 do i go short race 11 with the two and spreading race 10 a little bit which is inefficient but i'm Again, I'm sitting on the long shot, so it's okay. do I just single old crazy bone? Maybe I'm throwing because it's cheap, like old crazy bone. Throw in the two, so they're volant, and maybe even the five cars is run, and then see what I do in the last leg, and maybe just go 210 in the last leg. That's a possibility. So those are what I'm playing with. It's tough to say when I'm going to three days out, but that's kind of where i'm at in this pick five. And again, am I beating the favorite, or do I like the favorite? And that's kind of how I'm approaching each race. If I don't like the favorite,
00:57:55

If I really like someone else, I can narrow down, great. If not, I'm going to use whoever I think has a chance to beat the favorite so I can get through that leg. The problem sometimes is not in this sequence I run into where, um you know, I mean, if I don't pay like $30,000, $40,000 when this happens, if I'm right,
00:58:11
Speaker
there's like four ways where i want to beat the favorite, but I don't know to use. I can't spread five or six deep in four legs. It just makes it so expensive that, you know, how long can you survive doing that if you don't hit a big one? So um in this leg, I'm not necessarily like that. There's really only one, maybe two races where i really don't like the favorite that I'm trying to beat. So if I better pick five, which I probably will, it'll be it on the smaller side here. I won't invest a lot. It's not like I love it, but I do love some of the races vertically. So hope that makes sense. and if you're listening out there, feel free to reach out at bandits BB just let me know if I am talking to you quickly about this. If it's a waste of time, if you have any other questions for one of us, you know, feel free to reach out because we want to do this to help people and, um, be more efficient at what we're doing.
