Podcast Introduction & Match Update

Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome to the Daily Liverpool podcast brought to you by the Global Sports Podcast Network. Liverpool 1, Stoke City 0. nell ah Sorry, let me say that

Critique of Arsenal's Performance & Spending

00:01:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
again. Liverpool 1, Arsenal 0. But if you saw the game, you'd forgive me for mistaking Arsenal for the Tony Pulis version of Stoke City.
00:01:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
They were terrible. Absolutely terrible. um and if they've got any any designs on winning the Premier League, which um which they do every season,
00:01:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
um they're They're just going to have to do much, much better um than just launching it into the penalty area like some lower division team. I thought it was, I thought overall, I thought it was an embarrassing performance from Arsenal. and i think if you're an Arsenal supporter and you watch that game or worse still, you travelled,
00:01:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
to watch that game, I think i think you've you've just got to be embarrassed. You've got to be embarrassed that after a summer of spending £250 million. pounds And I know that Arsenal fans are going to say, well, you've spent exactly the same amount.
00:02:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
And we have. OK, we have. We've spent £250 million as well. ah But we've recouped £170 million. And Arsenal have recouped £5 million. So they've got a net spend of £245 million. pounds um and and And that's the football that they produce.
00:02:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, why bother?

Liverpool's Victory & Arsenal's Set-Piece Strategy

00:02:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
Why bother with spending that amount of money for high quality footballers, high quality footballers?
00:02:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then all you do is that you give it to to your goalkeeper to launch it into the penalty area. Save yourselves 200 million pounds. Save your your yourselves 200 million pounds and buy League two, League league three players, League two players.
00:02:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah go Go and buy some players from Grimsby Town. because that they were they were pretty good the other night. um But we, you know, Liverpool, I thought were, i mean, we I thought we were quite poor in the first half, and that was partly down to the way that Arsenal played.
00:03:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
um But look, you know, we've come away with three points. Dominic Saboslay smashing home an absolutely stunning free kick in the 84th minute.
00:03:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And it was building, i i I had no doubts that we were going to score because it was just coming. I knew that this game was not going to finish nil-nil.

Arsenal's Title Capabilities Questioned

00:03:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
And you know what, Arsenal, if you want to score from a set piece, do it with a bit of class. That's how you score from a set piece. um I mean, the only Arsenal player in danger of scoring from a set piece today was their goalkeeper, given the number of times that Rhea launched the ball into the Liverpool pen penalty area from the, quite frankly, ridiculous number of free kicks that were given by the referee.
00:04:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Arsenal, just the really a horrible team diving at every opportunity in the penalty area, trying to get a penalty at every corner, every set piece, just falling down, trying to get a penalty.
00:04:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I think that I think that desperation, and you saw that desperation even in the first half, to get a goal via a set piece, trying to buy a penalty, I think belies one of the limitations of this Arsenal team.
00:04:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
And regular listeners of this podcast will know my view of Arsenal. This is not something new. This is not something I've just made up today. I've said this over the last couple of seasons. And even now, even this season, I do not see them as a credible title threat.

Contrasting Mindsets: Liverpool vs Arsenal

00:04:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't see them as a credible title threat. And what do I mean by that? Are they going to be there or thereabouts in a month's time? Yes. Are they going to be there or thereabouts come January the 1st?
00:05:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
I believe they will. And are they going to be there or thereabouts in February and maybe even coming into March? But I don't think that they'll be able to see it through. And I think that the really, really critical moments are the ones that expose the fragility of this Arsenal team and of Mikel Arteta.
00:05:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And this is the game. This is the kind of game that Arsenal would have to win in order to really, really, truly believe that they are going to win the Premier League.
00:05:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
Not that they're going to challenge for the Premier League, but that they are going to win the Premier League. But they just don't do it. They always seem happy to kind of rock up to Anfield or today to the Etihad and just try and get a point or try and get their noses in front and then try and hang on, which you could see that's what they were trying to do in this game. Get a set piece, get a goal, get ahead and then try and shut the game down.
00:06:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
And ah just don't think that that is the mentality of champions. And you've you've seen that over the past few years with both Liverpool and Manchester City.
00:06:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
And that's in the Premier League and in the Champions League is that Liverpool will not go to the Etihad. to try and get a point. They just won't do that. They will go there to try and win the game and and really show that they're looking to win the game.
00:06:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
You could say everyone says pre-match in the press conference. Oh, you know, the most important thing is three points. so We just want to win the win the game. But in terms of Going out and playing the game on the front foot, being positive, showing that mentality that not only do we want to win the game, but we believe that we can win this game. We we have the right to come to the Etihad and expect to win the game.
00:07:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
And Liverpool have done that consistently over the years when they go to the Etihad. They do that when they go to um to the Emirates, Arsenal. They do that at Old Trafford. I know that Manchester United haven't been a a title rival, but they are our historic Rival.
00:07:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
um that that's the That's the big game. That's the game that every Liverpool supporter looks for when the when the fixtures come out. And that's the game that Manchester United fans look for when the fixtures come out, irrespective of our um um our positions in the league.

Premier League Title Prospects

00:07:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
And whether or not we're going to win the league or or not, or whether we're challenging or not, or whether we're just trying to get into Europe, that is the big game for both Liverpool and Manchester United is is each ah each each other's matches.
00:08:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
So that that's a massive game for Liverpool. And we would never go to to Old Trafford. and just not try and win the game or try to squeeze a game and and try and nick it 1-0.
00:08:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
You've got to show that confidence. You've got to show that desire that you have what it takes to win this Premier League and to show the rest of the teams in the Premier League that you are serious. And I just don't think...
00:08:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't think that Arsenal are capable of doing that. And I think that one of the reasons why that I truly believe that Mikel Arteta and those players, when it really, really comes down to it, I don't but i don't think that they believe that they will win the Premier

Squad Depth: Arsenal vs Liverpool

00:08:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
League.
00:08:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think that they think that they can win it. but only if all the conditions are there. So Manchester City you have to falter and Liverpool have to falter and everything has to go their way and then they'll win it.
00:09:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
But they're not capable of... of prizing that Premier League trophy out of our hands. I don't think they are. And so, you know, as I said, I don't think they're a credible threat to our title this year.
00:09:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think the biggest threat to to Liverpool Football Club retaining the Premier League title this season is Liverpool Football Club. and And that is, I thought that that was born borne out really well when the substitutions took place in this game.
00:09:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
um You know, i've i've I've just spoken about what Arsenal don't have, but what they do have is squad depth. They have very, very good squad depth.
00:09:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
And yes, so they've had injuries. They've got Saka is out and Odegaard was out, or at least he didn't start. But look at the substitutes that came on.
00:10:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
Odegaard eventually came on, but they've got Eze that's come on. um you know Martinelli played out on on the left. Maduiki played out on the right. So they've got very, very good squad depth, whereas our substitutions...
00:10:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
You know, Curtis Jones, very good player. He's, you know, he's done really well this season. he's I think he's had a really good start to this season. And when he came on, I thought he was very, very good. Academy player. um You know, Endo.
00:10:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
We all love Endo. Absolutely love Endo. But he's he's he's not in the he's not in in the class of any of the Arsenal midfielders in terms of their value or how much they paid for him.
00:10:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Chiesa. yeah what, 10, 11, 12 million pounds we bought him for. all ah bit part player. So I think that the um the the thing, and that's why I said that I think that the biggest threat to Liverpool winning the Premier League title this season is Liverpool FC.
00:11:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
We have to seal all the deal on both Alexander Isaac and Mark Gay, both of them. And that's not being greedy because we are very, very light, particularly going forward.
00:11:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
um you know the the fact that chiesa was really the only kind of recognized forward um that we had to bring on um that that's not enough to sustain a title challenge this season it's not enough to get us through the cup campaigns it's not enough certainly not enough to see us mount a challenge um for the champions league so You know, we've got ah another day deadline days looming now um in the transfer window. So let's see what happens ah with those ah transfers.
00:11:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
I thought that the players that did play, though, um ah special mention to a few players, I thought Ibrahim Khanate was was it's really impressive until he went off injured, which is, again, you know, that's one of the concerns with Khanate.
00:12:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
But bearing in mind that the games, the two games that he started off the season with against Bournemouth at home and then away to Newcastle, where he was so, so poor in both of those games.
00:12:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
And it was a real concern, lot of talk that, you know his contract situation, um you know, it has been a cause, um you know, for distraction.
00:12:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
But he came back with a really strong, solid performance, much more like the Ibrahim Khanate um you know, that that we all know from last season, from that title winning campaign.
00:12:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
So I thought that was really good to see Klarte, you know, back to some kind of form. And it's just obviously it's a worry. We don't know what kind of injury um he sustained. It looked muscular.
00:12:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
um which again, this is this is how I categorize players that are injury prone. It's not the players that get the impact injuries. It's not the players who even get serious injuries like an ACL because those are generally there, yeah know you know, you twist your knee or it's an impact injury.
00:13:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
For me, the the the players that are injury prone are those that, you know, always pull a muscle or calf strain or a thigh muscle or hamstring. Those are injury prone players.
00:13:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
And Canate has been that last season. I thought he was really good, even with his fitness. The only time that he had out was an impact injury that he suffered against. I think it was Real Madrid in the Champions League.
00:13:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
And, um you know, and and that was an impact injury that kept him out for, I think, four to six weeks.

Impact of International Break & Key Performances

00:13:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
but he didn't have any of those kind of thigh strains, calf pulls, all that kind of things that used to plague him before.
00:13:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And so, you know, credit to him. He was really good last season in terms of form and fitness. So it's a bit of a worry that he's, um you know, he suffered a what looks like a muscle injury.
00:14:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
um It could be a good thing that obviously it's just now before the international break. So we've got two weeks off. um I'm presuming that wouldn't mean that he's now going to pull out of the, of the French national team, which is good news for us.
00:14:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
um I, you know, not a big fan. ah Most of the fans are not big fans of these international breaks, especially the first one of the season, just, you know, three games in, into a Premier League. You're just getting up and running. You're just getting into the groove of things.
00:14:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then you have this kind of ah really annoying two-week international break. um But he went off injured. And then Joe Gomez comes on. He comes on and reminded us all, if if anyone does need reminding,
00:14:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
what an important player he is for us because he came on and he completely bossed the likes of Goikarez and all the Arsenal um attackers.
00:15:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
And he dealt with that you know, that kind of aerial bombardment, particularly in that kind of last 10 minutes where they were just launching everything into the penalty area. And Gomez just was just winning everything, winning everything in the air, winning everything in terms of blocks and tackles.
00:15:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
I thought it was absolutely fantastic. And it's... um Again, it's a reminder of how important he is. I know that there's all this speculation about Mark Gahey coming in.
00:15:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
And if Mark Gahey does come in, it means that we've got five centre-backs. And you just think that maybe, just maybe, that Gomez might be surplus to requirements and that he moves on. I certainly hope that that is not the case.
00:15:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
I honestly believe that he's really worth keeping because, Because you might not get, you know, you you might not be able to rely on Joe Gomez in terms of playing week in, week out um in terms of because of his fitness.
00:16:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
But I think that he's one of those players that can slot into any of that back line and just do a job. So if your centre backs are injured, he can come in and do a job at centre back. If you're short on right backs, he can play at right back. He can do that at left back as well.
00:16:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
And he's an experienced player. He is our longest serving footballer. He's won everything at Liverpool Football Club. Never causes a problem. Never, ever ah rocks the boat.
00:16:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
He is the model professional. And you can see he's got the respect of all of his peers, um both the senior players and the younger players um One, because he's done it all with Liverpool. And, you know, people forget that he had that partnership in the those early years of of Jurgen Klopp with Virgil van Dijk. And nobody got through those two.
00:17:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
Two absolute speedsters. um You know, nobody would get ah through those two centre-backs. And so he's a really experienced player. I was really pleased that he came on and did a really, really good job.
00:17:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
But as well as he played, no one played as well as Dominic Saboslite, man of the match. Man of the match even before that free kick because he was everywhere. Another Dominic Saboslay, all action um performance.
00:17:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's so dependable. He can play in, and just like Gomez, you know, he's very versatile. He can play an attack in attacking midfield. He can play out on the on the right wing. He's played the double pivot role and now he's at right back.
00:17:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's just unbelievable. And... Apart from the goal, there was a pass that he ah the executed. um ah long, raking cross-field ball absolutely fizzed it into um Florian Wurtz.
00:18:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
And, i mean, yeah reminiscent of, dare I say, Trent Alexander-Arnold. um So, you know, if if you want someone at right back who can ping a pass and take free kicks, then I think we've found our man. But so I just see his all-round play, the way he covered that right flank.
00:18:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
He dealt with Martinelli. He dealt with Eze when he popped, when he came on as a substitution and then pops up with that free kick. And what a free kick it was.
00:18:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
It was a good, what, 30, 35 yards out. And he absolutely pinged it into the corner off the post. Just, you know, just for that kind of added aesthetic, you know, always looks better when it comes off the crossbar or off the post.

Defensive Strengths & Player Evaluations

00:18:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
And the keeper had absolutely no chance. And, know, You know, as ah as I mentioned before, the irony of us winning with a set piece against Arsenal, I thought was just, you know, brilliant.
00:19:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
um So, look, it was great three points. of the In terms of the game overall, I thought the first half was pretty, you know, it was pretty drab. And I thought Arsenal made it drab because it was just a physical battle. They obviously watched...
00:19:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
um the Newcastle game. And, you know, I said after that um Newcastle game post-match in the podcast that it was good practice um for the game against Arsenal because that's what we would have to face. But we'd have to face that with an Arsenal team that's just got better players.
00:19:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
And so massive credit to our back four and Alison Becker, um as well as the rest of the team, ah for nullifying Arsenal at set pieces because none of them showed up to challenge. Even the guys who were completely dwarfed by you know the Declan Rises and the Gabriels and all the kind of towering Calafiori, all the kind of towering six foot plus Arsenal players,
00:20:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
Even the likes of McAllister, Kerkhez, all of them, they all did their bit and they absolutely matched Arsenal for for their aggressiveness. ah But we were stronger.
00:20:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
We were stronger in the challenge. And I honestly believe that that's why they started resorting. to diving around trying to win penalties. um So that was really pleasing to see.
00:20:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I think that was really pleasing. I'm sure Arnie Slott would have absolutely loved, um you know, the fight and the commitment that the Liverpool players showed. The second half was a lot, lot better.
00:20:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
And, um you know, you had Curtis Jones, who I mentioned, I thought he had a really good game when he came on. He was excellent against a Newcastle last week. Came on for McAllister, who you can see still quite not there. um He's not quite match fit yet. He needs a few more games.
00:20:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
under his belt and maybe going away with Argentina that gives just gives him that extra kind of match fitness because, you know, he was injured through preseason. So, um you know, you can see that he's, you know, he's just a ah yard off it at the moment.
00:21:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
um But in that mid in that second half, you could see that we started it to assert ourselves um a bit more in midfield and we started playing more passes between the lines. And, you know, you saw Virgil van Dijk coming out of back four, getting into midfield, overloading that area so that, you know more kind of space opens up for the players ahead of him.
00:21:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
And it really caused Arsenal problems. And you can see also that Arnie Slott... really kind of drilled into his players that that, you know, the game plan was just do not concede, particularly at set pieces, because, you know, that that's going to be Arsenal game plan.
00:21:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I think once you shut them down in terms of set pieces, and they're going to have to play football. They're going to have to play football. And once they, anytime they try to play football, they just got shut down.
00:22:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
um So a good performance from the defence. I've mentioned Canate, you know, more like his his best, more like the season, the the form that we saw him produce last season. Van Dijk was his usual commanding player.
00:22:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
self-excellent in terms of the reading of the situation and just commanding that back four.

Season Outlook & Player Ratings

00:22:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
I thought Kerkhez was a lot, lot better. The first couple of games of the season, he's, again, new signing. You can see he's trying to find his feet.
00:22:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
Maduiki, to be fair to him, in the first half caused him problems. um But I thought he did really, really well to come back really strong in the second half. ah showed a really good mentality, came in some really crunching tackles. And what I love about him is when he goes forward, he's got a pass on him, a really good forward pass. So overall, you know, good signs um for the rest of the season.
00:23:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah We're going to go to a very, very short break. When we come back, we'll just finish off with some player ratings.
00:23:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
OK, let's get into some player ratings. um As I mentioned earlier, I thought the back five were but very, very good. I thought Alison Becker in goal, just no nonsense.
00:23:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
You know, no nonsense. Anytime he needed to make a save, He made the save. He made it efficiently. And another great thing about Alisson, know it sounds really basic, but trust me, you you can see every weekend you'll see a goalkeeper in the Premier League make a save and then parry the ball back into harm's way, back into the path of an um oncoming striker, back into the six-yard area.
00:24:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
Alisson Becker doesn't do that. He made the save. and pushes the ball always wide and safe handling excellent distribution excellent you know just calmness personified in that um you know between between the sticks so eight out ten for Alison um I thought Kanate, Van Dijk, both of them, again, thought that was just solid, you know, absolutely um commanded that um central ah defensive area, um headed away all of those crosses, all of those corners that we faced.
00:24:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
And they were just really strong. I thought they nullified Arsenal's attack. I think Roy Caress, you know, they hardly had a sniff. And so um i thought they did their job. um Kerkhez, I think, ah so they I'm going to give them eight out of 10, both of those centre-backs.
00:25:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
Kerkhez at left back, as I mentioned, um i thought you had an overall good game. I thought first half, Madwiki caused him a few problems. um But even when he was caused problems, I liked the way that he came back. He never gave up the chase.
00:25:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
Always got a last minute um tackle or a last ditch block in. But in the second half, I thought he really improved his game. And um I thought he was quite strong. So a good so solid seven out of 10 for Kerkhez.
00:25:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Midfield, Gravenberg, I thought ah thought it was okay. He had a good game and ah in patches. um I thought all of our midfield, I think in the first half, it was ah it was a difficult game for them because it was just one of those games where you just couldn't get your foot on the ball and impose yourselves. And so ah thought Gravenberg, I'm going to give him a seven.
00:26:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
McAllister, I've already mentioned that he just looked a yard off it and i and and and his passing was a bit off. And and that's just going to come with match fitness and games ah but he's such an important component of our midfield on of our team as a whole but on this occasion a six out ten similarly for flooring verts another player that you can see he's got you know some fantastic touches and he did You know, he caused a few problems in the second half. He might have scored in the second half. He had a great shot saved by the keeper.
00:26:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
um But I thought overall, you know, he he he's he looks like a player that, and again, needs games, needs minutes to find the pace of the Premier League.
00:26:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
um So a six out of 10 for him. Curtis Jones, I thought he came on. I thought he's very, very good. I'm going to give him a seven. And he's certainly someone that I think...
00:27:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
this season, in the first three games of the season, I think that he's but he's he's kind of cemented his position in this squad as i a viable option to be rotated

Squad Depth & Transfer Reflections

00:27:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
by Arnie Slott. So I don't think there's going to be this um worry that we can't play Gravenberg, McAllister and Sabozlai.
00:27:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
every single week in those three midfield positions. We've got Florian Verts in now, but I think Curtis Jones now is a is a bona fide option now for midfield. Up front, I thought Mohamed Salah, again, you know, it's not his best game.
00:27:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm going to give him a ah six out ten. Again, partly because we just didn't get the ball enough to him. um You know, the midfield was a bit lost in that first half. And so...
00:27:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't think you can um put it all all on Salah. um But I thought he improved, as did the most of the front line in the second half, because the midfield got into the game more in that second half.
00:28:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
Eketike and Gakpo, I think, again, the same. They just didn't really see much of the ball. So a six for Salah, seven for Eketike and Gakpo.
00:28:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
I thought Chiesa, when he came on, I thought was really good. You know, he again, he just did his job and and you cannot fault this guy for in terms of effort. He comes on, he's got such a great attitude. And I think, again, that's why the Liverpool fans absolutely love the two players that I'm going to mention next. One is Chiesa.
00:28:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
um You know, he got next to no minutes last season. He's got more minutes now than he had for the entirety of last season. And I think he's going to play more, um you know, partly because I think in terms of bodies, we just don't have the numbers up front. And so I think that's a good thing for him because I think that he will get more game time. But I thought that he was really effective.

And, you know, you want us some important um corners and, you know just when, ah you know, we needed to run the clock down to secure the points. And then the other a guy ah is Endo.

Global Sports Podcast Network
Endo comes on ah for the last few minutes and Endo does what Endo does, which is gets a very, very good yellow card um ah to ah to break up Arsenal's um you know arsenals attack. But...

Again, I think he's going to be an important part of the squad. And again, he's another player that we love because of his attitude and he just doesn't complain. And but if if he comes on for 60 seconds in a game, he is going to you know you you'll put his neck on the line for that 60 seconds.

Global Sports Podcast Network
um Was it seven goals, I think, scored? Yeah. six or seven goals scored and none conceded complete, you know, clean sheet, great record. um But they had to come to Anfield.

Global Sports Podcast Network
They had to come to Anfield and put down a marker and show that they are genuine, serious title contenders. And instead it's Liverpool that has put down a marker and,

giving everyone a ah reminder that this is the home of the champions and you're going to have to go some way to beat this team and to finish ahead of them.
00:30:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
And, you you know, both obviously we beat Arsenal today. Manchester City lost earlier in the day. um That's one win out of the first three games for Manchester City. So three three points out of a maximum out a possible of nine.

So, you know, we are the team to beat, ah but, and it is a big but, we do need reinforcements. And, you know, the next day or so, Monday 7pm UK time is the deadline for ah the summer transfer window closing.

Global Sports Podcast Network
And, you know, fingers crossed, I really, really hope that the next time we're on the podcast, we'll We're announcing that Alexander Isak and Mark Gay he have joined, um you know, joined Liverpool because we really, really do need those reinforcements, particularly up front.
