Introduction and Liverpool's Season Start

00:00:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello, you are listening to the Daily Liverpool podcast on the Global Sports Podcast Network. My name is Louis Easton and joining me making his return for the twenty twenty five twenty six campaign, Mr Tom Goward. Great to have you back, mate.
00:00:27
Tom Goward
Yeah, it's good to be back. I'm um'm back with a bang, hopefully, on this episode. I've i've missed quite a few the start of season. You know, working and holiday season, isn't it, in August? So, in a way, but it's good to be back and it's good to be saying that Liverpool are six points in two games already.
00:00:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:00:44
Tom Goward
So, it's it's looking a good start for us.
00:00:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, great to have you back, mate. And some great matches that have happened already this season as well. But we're not going to be talking too much about that because there has been plenty going on off the pitch over the course of today.

Transfer Talks: Mark Gay from Crystal Palace

00:00:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
We'll start off with um what I think is the biggest story of the day, and that is that Liverpool are remaining in active talks today.
00:01:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
to sign Marc Guéhi immediately. This is from Fabrizio Romano. ah Liverpool are ready to pay over £30 million pounds now to get the deal done, but it depends on Crystal Palace.
00:01:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
If Palace find a replacement and let him go, Marc Guéhi has already said yes to Liverpool. um So, Tom, obviously you've seen a couple of the Liverpool games ah from this season, the first two, and I think it's pretty apparent that we do need a new centre-back, isn't it?
00:01:34
Tom Goward
yeah I don't know Konate's got one foot in Spain already, I'm not sure, but um it's not like the Konate we've seen of a couple of years ago. We've also got to think that Van Dijk is 34 now.
00:01:45
Tom Goward
um as well. And I know he's not declining anytime soon, but you do have to build for the future. And I think Marc Guéhi is that. He's probably England's starting centre-back for the World Cup next year, as long as he has a good season this year and there's no injuries, I would assume. I can't think many people would argue with that. So to be signing to be signing an English centre-back ah for £30 million, £35 million not not a bit of bad business. you know i know he's got a year left on his contract,
00:02:11
Tom Goward
um He's probably worth, what, 60, 70 million maybe if he had a couple of years left on his contract. So to be getting him for half that price is is, again, great business from Liverpool. um And lucky that he wants us. This is a pool of of being Premier League champions and being in the Champions League as well this season.
00:02:28
Tom Goward
um And he wants to play for a top club. he's He's done his time at Palace. He's captained them to an FA Cup and a community shield against us, but we won't talk about that. And... ah and Yeah, I think if Kanate stays or decides to go next season or or whatever the plan is with him, um we've we've got a great a great replacement in Mark Gaye.
00:02:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, look, and obviously you mentioned the fact that he is a starter for England. We saw him at the Euros. You know, this is a player who is very comfortable in high-pressure situations, great on the ball, great going forward as well for a centre-back.
00:03:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
But this whole sort of waiting to see if they have a replacement with four days left of the window, Liverpool kind of going high-risk, high-reward with this one, hoping that Palace will be able to get a new centre-back in by the...
00:03:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
by deadline day.
00:03:20
Tom Goward
Yeah, I mean, this sort of these whole clubs that want to replace players, I get that. And of course you need to replace them. But, you know, you're you're losing for a free next year. You know, you'll lose your club captain in England starting centre-back for a free next year.

Liverpool's High-Risk Transfer Strategy

00:03:35
Tom Goward
And that's not how Palace do business. We've just seen the money they got for Eze and the way they've done business before in the past. And so I get that they want a replacement, but at the same time they've got to weigh up...
00:03:46
Tom Goward
um losing him for free. It's the same with Isak, I'm sure we'll get onto it briefly, and the whole podcast and the whole Liverpool fan base the whole football media industry has been talking about Izak this summer. But it's the same with Newcastle. It's like, well, sell him this summer, cash in now, where you can still make the money. I mean, um i get that clubs want to replace him, I get that. You can't just sell one of your best players and not replace him, I totally get that. But, you know, at the end of day, it's, like you say, it's high risk, high reward. And, and,
00:04:16
Tom Goward
ah I don't see why pallet the the longer the Palace leave a decision on they're going to do with Gehi, the longer it will take them to replace him. and yeah And we've only got till Monday and it's and we're recording this on Wednesday.
00:04:28
Tom Goward
So, you know, it's it's a strange one, but um it's weird that they've left it this late, you know, because they probably knew that he'd want to leave. And, ah you know, this interest has been going on for weeks now, but from what we know in the media.
00:04:41
Tom Goward
So why leave it now with four or five days to go and then suddenly go, we need to find a replacement first before we sell him? i just That's a bit strange from Palace, in my opinion.
00:04:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, it's ah it's going it's setting up for a huge deadline day if we leave it this late, because we know what Liverpool like. We've seen us do this sort of thing before where it suddenly goes from zero to 100 really quickly. And then before you know it, it's a here we go. He's announced at the time at ah the AXA training ground.
00:05:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's just one of these situations where is this a player that we absolutely can't do without? And when you look at Canate's recent performances, it kind of does worry you. I mean, we've got Leonie in already.
00:05:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't know too much about him. His stats look pretty good. He's young. And ah I mean, he's absolutely massive. So he's good from that perspective ah that we've managed to get in some backup.
00:05:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
But... You know, with this talk of Canate maybe going next summer, as you alluded to, i think it is a transfer that we do need.
00:05:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
And he's still quite young, Mark Gay, but he's got experience. He's got such a good mindset. And this would be such a good signing for 30 million, 35 million, whatever it's going to be.
00:06:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
Um...

Defensive Concerns and Player Fit

00:06:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I'd like to touch on Isak now as well, because this is a sort of similar situation where we're looking at a player and sort of we know that they might sell him, but it's whether or not they can get a replacement in.
00:06:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
And we've seen this sort of movement happening with Strand-Larsen, where Newcastle were reportedly offering them 60 million now. That's how desperate it's got. 60 million for Strand-Larsen. um But when they've got a player who's desperate to leave and he's sticking to his guns, he wants to join Liverpool.
00:06:29
Tom Goward
Uh.
00:06:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
um It does look like it could also happen. With regards to our striker position, do you think Isak is a must buy?
00:06:48
Tom Goward
I would argue, I think at this moment in time, i think Gehi's probably a more important buy than Izak. um We... Yes, all right, we've lost three attackers and we've only replaced two. You know, we've brought in Eketike and Verts, but...
00:07:03
Tom Goward
um The thing is, right, E-Zach is quality and we know his quality, but I think this saga has gone on too long now to to for me to not be as hyped about it anymore. I think when the news came out and then we put the bid in and it was rejected, it was like, okay, this is cool. like We're going in for E-Zach.
00:07:25
Tom Goward
And the longer this has gone on and on and on, and and then the statements came out last week, and and i didn't I wanted to touch on that quickly last week because I didn't get a chance to, but that sort of that statement he put out and the Newcastle put out last week ruined what was a great night for Mo Salah and potentially his future team-mate.
00:07:43
Tom Goward
in terms of it was the only player to win the PFA award three times. And I feel like it was totally overshadowed in the media by Ezek and Newcastle's statements.
00:07:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm.
00:07:53
Tom Goward
I had talks on the following morning going to work and all they were talking about were those statements. No mention of how historic it was, Asala winning these awards, how deserving he was. And yeah they briefly touched on it, but that should have been the headline, not these statements.
00:08:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm.
00:08:06
Tom Goward
And I just sort of was driving and thinking, I've lost all the hype now. um But he's still important. but i don't But it's been interesting because we spent a lot of money on Eketike and he's not there to be the backup.
00:08:18
Tom Goward
And how do you fit both of them in, two wingers and verts?
00:08:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:08:21
Tom Goward
And it's all these decisions. It's like that's a lot of money to be throwing at with a guy that started the season them well, you know, scored his last three games and got an assist, if we know if we include the Palace game. So, you know, he's not he's not come to play second fiddle, Isaac. He's come to play the starter.
00:08:39
Tom Goward
And so to your point, is he a must-buy? I don't think he's a must-buy. i think Gehi's a must-buy. You know, we... we Leone is the Kwanzaa replacement for now. And Gomez, you know, with his injury struggles, and he's not the Gomez that we knew four five years ago, is he?
00:08:56
Tom Goward
And Canate's been off it in the first couple of games. And like you said, he might be moving on. So um I think that is the must buy is Mark Gahey. I don't think I don't think Isaac is the must buy.
00:09:07
Tom Goward
It's a nice buy, you know, and it's an expensive buy. And yes, it will it will help us out even more in attack. But judging by the first two games this season, yeah we've been 2-0 up in both Premier League games and you know gone back to two two and i know we've gone on to win the games, but that just shows you where the issue is. The issue is not in the goals. We've scored...
00:09:26
Tom Goward
what seven goals in two games, but then conceded four. So that shows you where the issue lies.
00:09:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:09:31
Tom Goward
It's in the defence. It's

Kostas Simikas' Role and Transfer Possibilities

00:09:32
Tom Goward
not in the attack. We've got the players.
00:09:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:09:33
Tom Goward
vtz hasn't Wurz hasn't started as well, but he'll settle in. He's adjusting the Premier League, and I think we need to give him a bit of time. And then when he settles in, yeah that is a world-class player we've got playing in that attacking position.
00:09:46
Tom Goward
And if we did have Izak, imagine if you're Wurz, you're feeding it into Izak, Ekotike, Gatpo and Salah. I mean, died that's a hell of a position to be in for him.
00:09:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm. Spoiler for choice, yeah.
00:09:55
Tom Goward
um So, say yeah, to go back to what you say, I don't think Izak's a must-buy. I think Gaye's a must-buy, but um I wouldn't say no to Izak joining, obviously.
00:10:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I don't think anyone with a brain or who watches any football at all would say no to Alexander Isak.
00:10:10
Tom Goward
Yeah.
00:10:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
um It's just so uncertain of what's going to happen at this stage late in the window. And the final bit of ah first team transfer news that I want to touch on is Kostas Timikas.
00:10:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah This is a left back who's been with us for quite a few years now, ah came in in 2020, believe, and... You know, he's never scored a goal in open play, but he's contributed going forward plenty down the left-hand side.
00:10:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah Now we've got in Kerkhez. So Simakas' days are very heavily numbered at a Liverpool Football Club.
00:10:39
Tom Goward
Thank you.
00:10:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
but And apparently Roma came in with a loan-to-buy proposal for him. And we rejected because we want to sell him immediately and we want to sell him for a higher price as well. I don't know the numbers. they're not They haven't actually been disclosed, I believe, yet.
00:10:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
um But Tom, when you look at Kostas Timikas' career at Liverpool, do you see it overall as positive?
00:11:09
Tom Goward
Yes and no. i think he never came in to be a starter, did he? was always coming in to be the backup to Robertson. um You know, I know he started if Robertson was injured and obviously scored that penalty, didn't he, in the ah the winning penalty in the f FA Cup.
00:11:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
and Yeah, FA Cup final.
00:11:23
Tom Goward
So he's had some good moments. The players seem to love him. You know, you see clips on social media, especially when Trent was there as well. You get some of a lot of players. Go on with Salah. You know, to say Salah's your best mate, probably not the the worst flex in the world.
00:11:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
Bye. Bye.
00:11:37
Tom Goward
so um
00:11:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
Bye.
00:11:39
Tom Goward
I think he's been nice to have around, but now that we've got Kerkhez in, Robertson's now going to be probably the backup. So and then you can't really have three left backs that probably all want to be starting for a club.
00:11:53
Tom Goward
um You know, he's not he's not bad enough to not be starting. um And i think I think maybe life in Italy or life in France would be good for him. and And can be a solid starter playing for a Champions League or Europa League team.
00:12:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, well, we'll see what ah how the situation develops. um You know, he'll be greatly loved for that penalty and for his character in the changing rooms, absolutely.
00:12:17
Tom Goward
Thank you.
00:12:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
We're going to take a short break now and we'll be back with more news afterwards.

Player Focus: Eketike's Transition to Liverpool

00:12:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
first, it's time to hear from our sponsors, Bionic.
00:13:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
Right, so we'll have a look at a bit more news. And ah the first thing I would like to speak about next is about a player that we mentioned briefly whilst talking about Alexander Isak, Ugo Eketike.
00:13:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
A very promising prospect in this front line for Liverpool. He's got his best years ahead of him. But that's not... But that's not enough at the moment for him to break into the France squad for the upcoming international break. The team hasn't been released yet, but Ugo Eketike is not going to be a

International Call-Ups and Player Confidence

00:13:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
part of it. Tom, nothing to be worried about there, surely. i mean, he's got so much healthy competition going going on in that France team.
00:13:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's not something to get down on.
00:13:48
Tom Goward
No, absolutely. And he's just set's you know still settling into a new club. um And these international breaks, i I think, are good for new players to sort of stick around, do a bit extra of training, so feel more sort of relaxed at home um you know at your new club. and And I don't think it's a down... you know he He will get into that France squad if he keeps this up eventually. But you know give him...
00:14:11
Tom Goward
there's no rush. I think a lot of footballers today, it's always a rush for them to do stuff, you know, to make an international team or to hit the ground running when they join a new team or whatever. And he's done that.
00:14:22
Tom Goward
But, if he went the first 10 games without scoring, I don't think there's anything to panic about the same way that there's nothing to panic about with Verts, you know, but I think we forget Verts is 22, 23.
00:14:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:14:33
Tom Goward
And, you know, he was the most, like, I think he was most transferred player out of FPL teams after game week one. It's like, Like, just everyone just needs to relax. Like, there's not this rush to sort of put these players in the limelight, you know. um And i'm I'm all for it. I'm all for, I mean, I'm always fought for Liverpool players not going on international duty, especially the South Americans. um So, yeah, you know, let Mbappe and Dembele and Barcola or whoever they're playing up front for France, let them go and do the business in September and let Eketiko stay in Liverpool and settle in a bit more.
00:15:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
And on the flip side of that, we have got a couple of players that are getting a call-up that we may not have been expecting. ah Both of them are Italian. And, well, that already narrows it down to two for Liverpool. Federico Chiesa will be returning to it to Italian international football. There we go. I managed to get it out.
00:15:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Of course, what do you think of when you think of Chiesa's career? His best times are with the Italian national team. Think of Euro 2020 at Wembley sliding towards the corner flag.
00:15:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, this is fantastic, isn't it? For a football perspective to see Chiesa back it with Italy.
00:15:44
Tom Goward
yeah
00:15:47
Tom Goward
Yeah, from a football perspective and his confidence as well. Like you just said, he's had some of his best moments in an Italian share. So what way when you go and score the winner on the game on the first Premier League weekend of the season and then you go and get a call up? I mean, I honestly think that could be the changing and the making of him for this season.
00:16:06
Tom Goward
even Even if he plays 20 minutes, half an hour, i mean, he's back in with his fellow countrymen. He's, you know, he could get to play international football again over September, come back and then he comes back at sort of mid-September, end of September. And then it's only a couple of months before Salah goes off to AFCON.
00:16:23
Tom Goward
You know, just keep that confidence up for the next two, three months. And that right wing position, why Salah's gone, could be all his during January.
00:16:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yep.

James McConnell's Loan to Ajax

00:16:29
Tom Goward
um And I honestly think it starts with this international break coming in September and and very good for him. And obviously Leone as well, um you know, good for him.
00:16:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:16:39
Tom Goward
you that Like, again, we like you said, we don't know much about him. We haven't seen him yet, um but great on him. He's 18 years old. He's been picked for his national side, you know, the say two weeks before, two weeks after joining, you know, the Premier League champions.
00:16:53
Tom Goward
So what couple of weeks for him.
00:16:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, and and the centre-back position in the Italian national team is hotly contested. You think of all the great players that have played there before him, like Chiellini, Barzagli, Bonucci. And even now, you've got a couple of fantastic players like Mancini, who's there, Romagnoli. Fantastic competition. So good for him to get in. Really, really buzzing for him.
00:17:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah We've got so one more thing that i like to speak about, and that's our sort of backup in midfield that... we have complained about before, but it's not really been too much of a crisis.
00:17:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
Uh, Neone said to be staying. We've already seen Tyler Morton head off to Leon and put in a man of the match performance in his first match. And, um, now we've got another player leaving on loan.
00:17:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
Uh, James McConnell signed a new contract with Liverpool and he'll be out at Ajax, uh, for this season, taking Jordan Henderson's spot is, uh, this, what's going to happen there.
00:17:50
Tom Goward
Yeah.
00:17:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
So James McConnell to Ajax. When you think of clubs for development, you think Ajax, you think Dortmund, just the perfect place, breeding grounds for talent. ah This is such a good move for him, isn't it?
00:18:05
Tom Goward
Yeah, and he needs to be you need to be playing first-team football. um He's also going with you know former a assistant coach from last season, John Heiting as well. you know He's down the coach at IAXA.
00:18:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:18:17
Tom Goward
He'll probably know him from last season. um And yeah, it's a great move for him. He needs to be playing regular first-team football. Hopefully can keep his fitness up, um but you know at least play 25 games next season, have a good season, then come back to Liverpool next year. And who knows what his position could be in the team.
00:18:33
Tom Goward
um But, yeah, pleased for him. We've seen glimpses of him in sort cup games, haven't we? And obviously he played that Carabao Cup final at Chelsea, you know, when we had all the kids out. um And if I remember rightly, he was class in that.
00:18:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, the tactical foul at the end.
00:18:45
Tom Goward
And so there's we've seen glimpses of him. So now go and put that into into proper first team football.
00:18:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
oh Tom.
00:18:52
Tom Goward
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:18:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah you
00:18:54
Tom Goward
And then come back.
00:18:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh, your connection went for a bit there. Sorry, on my side.
00:18:57
Tom Goward
Oh, that's all right. No worries.
00:18:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
that
00:18:59
Tom Goward
Yeah.
00:18:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
Sorry, I can hear you now.
00:18:59
Tom Goward
yeah
00:19:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
Keep going.
00:19:01
Tom Goward
ah yeah I was just saying, and you know go and put that sort of talent that we've we've seen in him, go and put that into first-team football in the Dutch league, a competitive league, a tough league at times. you know There's PSV and Ajax and Feyenoord as well. They're sort of the three big teams. and And yeah like you say, take the Jordan Henderson role and and then come back and see where his pace is next year.

Stefan Bajetic's Return and Future Development

00:19:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
And finally, um one last player that some fans may have forgotten existed. Stefan Bajetic, our young Spaniard. Still only 20 years old, would you believe?
00:19:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
that's his It's astonishing.
00:19:36
Tom Goward
Thank you.
00:19:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
he's been it it just goes to show how young he was a couple of years ago when... He was getting into the first team. ah So he was out on loan ah for the second half of last season at Las Palmas, where he sort of struggled to get into the team a little bit there.
00:19:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. And he was also on loan at Red Bull Salzburg as well last season. ah So he he was playing at centre-back for some periods of Les Palmas' campaign. And, um I mean, they were relegated 19th of 20 teams.
00:20:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
So it's a little bit of a worry for me ah seeing him now back at Liverpool, and he'll now be staying here for the entire season because I don't think he's going to get anywhere near the first team.
00:20:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
What I'm wondering is if he's going to be back with the sort of under-23s sides, under-21s sides, and his development will continue in youth football. Maybe that's the right thing for him, but it just seems a bit at straight bit of a strange thing when, ah obviously, that match against Real Madrid, he started in midfield.

So what's your reaction to this?
00:20:53
Tom Goward
Well, it actually three years ago today that he made his debut for Liverpool. So, yeah, and he's still only 20.
00:20:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh, wow.
00:20:58
Tom Goward
So that shows that how young he was. But i think I think you're right. I think youth that football, probably under 23 levels, you know, Liverpool got control of him then. They can keep an eye on him.
00:21:09
Tom Goward
And then maybe on the old cup game, um you know, if we get maybe a League One or League Two side, he might play. um But going, you know, I think... it's one of them where they obviously don't want to let him go.
00:21:21
Tom Goward
know, we've seen sort of Ben Doak leave this summer, Kwanzaa leave, you know, sort of young players who, like Kwanzaa, had a bit more first-team experience than Ben Doak. But the Liverpool are obviously happy to let them go. They're obviously not happy to let him by Tetic go because they obviously want him and they'll see a future for him.
00:21:38
Tom Goward
But that would be my only reasoning. But instead of sending him out on loan and and playing for a team where he was playing centre-back and they get relegated, you know, that's not a great... loan spell.
00:21:49
Tom Goward
um So I think i think under 23 level, be playing there. Liverpool can keep an eye on him. He'll be training, probably train your time with the first team. You know, players know him, especially the longer players.
00:22:01
Tom Goward
You know, maybe three years ago. So the likes of Virgil and Mo and people like that, Robertson, will will know him.
00:22:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:22:09
Tom Goward
So, you know, i think I think it'd be good. I quite liked him and I didn't want him to go this summer. um So I'm glad that sort from a personal point of view, that's that's how it's played out.
00:22:21
Tom Goward
um It just depends how well he does this season. Maybe if he doesn't have a good season, maybe they look to sell him on that next year.
00:22:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. Obviously, he did have that massive injury, that adductor injury had a couple of years ago, and I don't think he's ever actually been the same since.
00:22:32
Tom Goward
Yeah.
00:22:38
Tom Goward
Nice.
00:22:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
um So hopefully he can get back to those levels that we all ah remember for, like just those tackles he was making ah in midfield. Yeah, I think we'd all like to see the old Stefan Bajetic comeback. That's about all we have time to talk about today.
