Liverpool's Dramatic Victory Against Newcastle

00:00:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome to the Daily Liverpool podcast brought to you by the Global Sports Podcast Network. I'm Jesse Sawa. It is the Wednesday edition of the Daily Liverpool podcast and I think we're all still catching our breath from Monday night's absolute humdinger of a game against Newcastle United. The Reds coming away with all three points with a last gasp winner.
00:01:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
from teenage sensation Rio Ingemoa in the 100th minute of the game. I wonder if Alexander Issac celebrated that winner for the team that he so desperately wants to play for.
00:01:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
Cracking game, the the team yesterday at the Daily Liverpool, Adarshan Michael, really did a great job in going through the game with a bit more kind of tactical analysis, an in-depth look at how the two teams shaped up and and how we got the win eventually. But I think overall, we've got to be happy with coming away with three points in such a tough fixture.
00:02:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
it's It's always difficult going up at's Newcastle. I think historically, Liverpool and Newcastle, they just have these kinds of matches. For as long as I can remember, we've had great, great games, goals, incidents, red cards.
00:02:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's just one of those games which really kind of... ah ah It's just a great advert for Premier League football around the world. I'm sure the Premier League just love this game.
00:02:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
And that's why it's always televised. It's always a live game. know normally under the lights and it's just always a great game so i think we're really really happy to come on with three points a little bit concerned with the kind of way in which we've started defensively we're scoring goals but we're conceding goals as well which look I guess if we carry on doing you know we'll win the league but have a terrible defensive record but
00:03:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think that doesn't really happen very often.

Defensive Challenges and Adaptation

00:03:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's normally the team with the best defence that tends to to win the league. So think there's a lot for Arnie Slott to work on. There's a lot for him to to look at and to tinker with.
00:03:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I think that is where we're at at the moment with this team because we have had a very, very active transfer window, much, much more active than...
00:03:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
We're used to as Liverpool supporters. And whilst on the surface in terms of making headlines and the kind of excitement that transfers generate in the close season, i think that's all great.
00:03:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
And it gives a real kind of positive feeling in and around the club. But think what it does, though, it it does mean that players need time to bed in, especially if you've got more than two, three players that are new.
00:04:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I think it's no coincidence that defensively, we're just not quite there at the moment. And it's defensively where we probably arguably had, you know, most of the change. We've got two new fullbacks in Minos Kerkhez and Jeremy Frink, who wasn't playing,
00:04:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
And Connor Bradley was not quite fit enough to start. And so we had a midfielder in Dominic Sabosline starting at right back. And don't get me wrong, he was absolutely fantastic. And I think he's one of those players that Arnie Slott, he's one of the first teams on the on the first names on the team sheet. And it's because he can just play in so many positions and...
00:04:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
he's he's just such a work course he'll he'll just keep running and keep plugging away and it always makes something happen goal, whether it's a goal but there was a direct assist or an indirect to assist, as was the case

Sabozlai's Key Play in Victory

00:05:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
on Monday night. night I mean, Mahmoud Salah will officially have that assist for the winner, but it's all about Sabozlai's dummy that he plays, which completely takes out the Newcastle United defender and leaves you know a chance open for for rio
00:05:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
to put it away. So I think that's where we are at in terms of the team, in terms of the balance of the defence. It is going to take a bit of time for them to gel.
00:05:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
But I think if you look at it positively, the fact that we haven't started great in terms of performances, we haven't looked to be that much in control, we're giving up chances.
00:05:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
But we've got two wins. And if you can keep picking up points while you're finding your feet, while you're waiting for players to gel and to hit top form, I think that that's got to be a good sign. and Because sooner or later, this team is going to click.
00:06:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
And those new signings are going to click. And yeah look out the rest of the Premier League. So I think Newcastle, you know, they made it tough for us.
00:06:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
And, you know, we always knew that it was going to be a physical game with the likes of that midfield really, really kind of getting stuck into us.
00:06:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think Arnie Slott was right. I think they went too far. I think it was, you know, it was great entertainment. It was great viewing. But... They weren't really playing much football.
00:06:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
They were looking to stop us playing football and to be really aggressive. And that's fine. You know, that's what makes English football, you know, the the the success that it is. it's It's, you know, it's blood and thunder. It's all or nothing. And that's great.
00:07:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
But I think when you when you cross that line, as Anthony Gordon did, with a tackle that was a straight red card. And I really can't understand why the referee didn't see it as such immediately and how some of the commentators, particularly here in England, were saying that was a yellow card.
00:07:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
It was a straight red card and it was a potential leg breaker. And it was it was right that Gordon went off and you could see that coming, whether it was Anthony Gordon, whether it was Gimerez, you know, one of those players was just going to over the top, cross that line and get sent off.
00:07:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
And once they went down to 10 men, then you saw the set pieces. And as, you know, the boss said, as Arnie Slott said, yes, they're down to 10 men.
00:07:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
But does it really matter when your goalkeeper is taking all the free kicks and launching it into into the penalty area? It doesn't it doesn't matter then if you dance 10 men. It really doesn't.
00:08:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
So I'm not that surprised that Newcastle made it difficult for us. I think it is a concern that at 2-0, we didn't put the game to bed.
00:08:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think that... i've heard that I've heard the criticism that Liverpool were complacent. I don't think that's the case. I don't think any of those players thought, OK, this game is done.
00:08:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
Let's kind of take our foot off the gas. I don't think that was the case. But I ah do think that sometimes in their desire to kill the atmosphere of the game by keeping the ball, I think what that does is it it kind of slows the game down.
00:08:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
And whilst you might want to do that, you might want to slow the game down, you've got to look at you've got to look at where you're at in that moment. And Newcastle United were not going to slow that game down.
00:09:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
they Whether they were down to 11 or 10 men, they were going to harry and press and be physical and keep being in the faces of each and every Liverpool player that was on the ball.

Game Management Under Pressure

00:09:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
And so then... If you try and slow the goal the the game down and if you try these kind of sideway passes from fullback, from right back to centre back to from centre back to left back, invariably you're going to get pushed back and then you will then pass the ball back to your goalkeeper, Alison Becker. And what's Alison Becker going to do?
00:09:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's only got two choices. He's going to launch it long, in which case it's a 50-50 in terms of whether we keep possession or not. Or he'll have to pass it to one of the defenders that has been pushed back in the first place and that they're just a few yards away from goal, which kind of invites even more pressure.
00:10:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think Liverpool, really, at 2-0, they needed to think, right, let's just carry on trying to get another goal. It doesn't mean being gung-ho and just being completely irresponsible in attack, but I think you've got play a normal game and And know that Newcastle have got to come out.
00:10:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
They've got to come out because they're 2-0 down. They need a goal, which is which is going to leave gaps. And we've got a man extra. So play your game. Play your game and get another goal and then kill the game.
00:10:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
so But I think the Newcastle game, if anything, is going to be good practice for the upcoming game against Arsenal on Sunday. you know Because we dealt with so many set pieces, so many long balls into the box.
00:10:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
And, you know, that's what we're going to face against Newcastle. Now, don't want to be disrespectful against Arsenal. Arsenal are a good team. They've got good players and they they they can play on the ground as well. But their main threat is going to be in those set-piece areas.
00:11:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
And, you know, the defence, in particular Ibrahim Akarnate, and this is provided he's he's picked on Sunday. But he's really got to up his game.
00:11:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think that Arnie Slott has... He's got a lay down the law on Canate because he's had a horrid start to the season. He's had a stinker against Bournemouth.
00:11:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
He had a stinker on Monday night against Newcastle United. And it's it's causing so much instability in that back line because what you were hoping for is that with new two new full-backs...
00:11:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
at least you've got that core base of stability, which would be Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Kanate, and then your goalkeeper, Alison Becker. That kind of mini triangle in that back five.
00:12:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
But if one of those linchpins at centre-back is not performing and is a bit wobbly, then you know it's just invariably going to cause problems.
00:12:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
And i just thought he looked he looked indecisive, very indecisive against both Bournemouth and against Newcastle, which is so strange because he looked so assured you know last season next to Virgil van Dijk in what was a title winning campaign.
00:12:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
And the drop off has been really, really alarming. And you cannot help but wonder if the ongoing contract negotiations, obviously Canate being in the final year of his contract, if that is impacting his game, his concentration.
00:12:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think Slott is, he's got a decision to make. i don't know whether he's got a decision to make right now, but certainly if this form carries on into the Arsenal game,
00:13:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
then I think we've got a problem because that game is going to be a real test. And, you know, both for Canate and for Liverpool. And if he continues that kind of form, if he continues to be indecisive, then Arsenal do have the firepower. They've got the quality, ah ah again, particularly from set pieces to to punish us.
00:13:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
mean, the goals that we conceded against Newcastle, Kirk, as we all know, at left back, is not the biggest guy. But he's got to be more aggressive and he's got to be more proactive in the challenge on Gimenez for that ball, for that first goal.
00:13:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, any kind of challenge and... you think that Gimenez is is he's just not get he's not going to get enough purchase on that header to beat Alisson.
00:13:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
Because it wasn't a cross that was whipped in with pace. One of those where you whip it in with real pace and all you've got to do is just direct the ball and it goes in. This was floated in.
00:14:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
And, you Gimenez had to generate generate the power in that header to beat Alisson. And he could only do that because there was no challenge from Kerkis.
00:14:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
But I think the second goal for me was even even worse because, you know, Canate is a physical, tall centre-back. And he's got an age to watch that ball come down and make a challenge.
00:14:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
And, yeah, yeah he's he's up against, you know, the BFG, Dan Burns, or the big unfriendly giant. But again, you you can't just watch the ball and not make a challenge.
00:14:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think if Canate gets anything on that ball, even the slightest header, it doesn't fall into the path of the Newcastle player to score. So I think Slott has got work to do with that defensive unit as a whole.
00:15:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think possibly Connor Bradley, you know he's got some more minutes under his belt and I would expect him to start on Sunday against Arsenal. So i think that should give us a bit more stability in that back line.
00:15:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
And you know with with the injuries to Frimpong, and to Connor brad Bradley. It is understandable to extent that there's been a bit of instability in in the back four.
00:15:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
And obviously we had a makeshift right back in Subozlai playing there. But I just think that that whole thing is just being massively exacerbated by Kanate's poor form. I mentioned Milos Kerkhez at left back.
00:15:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
excellent who's come in, he's obviously our number one now, who started both games ahead of Andy Robertson. And I wouldn't call it a bad start in terms of his Liverpool career career. I think that some of the criticism has been way over the top.
00:16:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
But I think what is clear is that playing for for Liverpool is a step up, a big step up from playing for Bournemouth.
00:16:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
you know Here, you're expected to to defend. You're expected to not concede. But you're also expected to be yeah to play an integral part of the team's attacking play.
00:16:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
And i think just the pressure and the expectation is just amped up to a whole other level. you know he's His performances in a red shirt...
00:16:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
are going to be so heavily scrutinised now in a way that it wasn't the case at Bournemouth. He's every tackle, every missed tackle, every interception that he makes or misses, every loose pass.
00:17:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
You know, he's now in the spotlight like never before in his career. And that's like that's all part and parcel of being a top player and and making it that top like club like Liverpool. So he's still young.
00:17:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think he's one of those that will grow as as the season goes. But while he's finding his feet, I think teams will have a go at him. And I think i think he's very very, very fortunate to have someone like Virgil van Dijk next time to to guide him, to back him up, to clean up.
00:17:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
which he did on more than a few occasions on Monday night at St James' Park.

Rio Ingemoa's Rising Star

00:17:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
But let's talk Rio for for a bit.
00:17:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
Liverpool's bright new thing. 16 years old, he becomes Liverpool's youngest ever goal-scorer top flight. I mean, what an impact he's had. there was There was a lot of talk about Rio, particularly during that pre-season period, where he really impressed him.
00:18:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
But obviously that was pre-season. You know, those are friendlies. They're not competitive games. But for him to come on a late stage in a Premier League game, a really hostile atmosphere at St James' Park.
00:18:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
And Liverpool under the cosh somewhat, right? Under pressure. They've come back from too long down. It's too two The Newcastle fans are absolutely up for it. You know, trying to push their team on for a winner.
00:18:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
and Newcastle playing a really direct, aggressive style of football, for this 16-year-old to come on and provide that kind of finish in the 100th minute of the game, absolutely phenomenal. And it was such a good finish.
00:18:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
And not an easy finish. I mean, he made it look easy. But, you know, when that ball is bouncing, and to take that as a side-foot finish first time,
00:19:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
and hit it firmly with conviction. I mean, that was the finish of a seasoned striker. And what a way to announce yourself. And I think you'll get game time this season.
00:19:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think if Arnie Slott is prepared to put him on in that kind of out of atmosphere, in a big Premier League game, then I think that you'll see him play in more Premier League games, maybe less intenses intense games,
00:19:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
and certainly some of the cup games, yeah League Cup or FA Cup games. And then it's up to him. It's up to him as a young player to force himself into the manager's thoughts, to force himself into the conversation through his performances.
00:19:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
And he's already doing that. And and he's he's again, he's so young and it's we don't want to put too much pressure on him, but it's in a way kind of inevitable that when a young talent comes off the bench and makes the impact that he made in such a dramatic way on Monday night as he did against Newcastle, then we're going to talk about him and I'm sure he doesn't mind.
00:20:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
Okay, it's time for a very short break and when we come back, we'll go through all the latest transfer news during the rounds.
00:21:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
Right, let's get into some transfer talk. with We've just got a few days now left of the summer transfer window.

Transfer Speculations as Window Closes

00:21:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mark Gahey may be a target for Manchester City as we approach deadline day.
00:21:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
Both Manuel Akanji and Nathan Ake could be set to leave the Etihad with Galatasaray and Everton respectively.
00:21:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
looking to secure deals for those Manchester City defenders. Now, if that does happen, it may force City to move and move quickly for Crystal Palace's captain.
00:21:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
And reports are suggesting that they may well be willing to meet Palace's valuation of their captain. It has gone a bit quiet in terms of Liverpool's interest in Gei.
00:21:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm not sure if that's because we've secured Giovanni Leoni from Parma in the last week or so. but with Ibrahima Canate's performances causing a bit of concern, obviously, with his contract situation, we may be short in that department if we don't move for another defender.
00:22:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
so that's that's the situation that is going to develop in the coming coming days. the And then the other big one is Alexander Issac's situation.
00:22:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
The Chronicle newspaper, which a newspaper is a newspaper that covers all of the football in the northeast of England, they are reporting that a meeting was held yesterday between Alexander Issac and the club's owners.
00:22:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
They were very visible on Monday night at St James's Park. for such a big game against Liverpool, but obviously the speculation was that they were also in town to speak to their star striker.
00:22:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
And it appears, according to these reports, that Alexander Isak has reiterated his desire to leave Newcastle United and join Liverpool. So he's not budging, he's not moving from his position, and he's insistent that this is the move that that is best for all parties concerned. so that one of the reasons that this sale to to Liverpool has stalled is that Newcastle have just had knockback after knockback in their attempts to sign Stryker.
00:23:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
Because let's let's not forget that they... They have to potentially replace Alexander Issac, but they've also got to replace Callum Wilson, who's already left the club.
00:23:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
They've missed out on Hugo Eketike, who hilariously, it has to be said, scored against Newcastle on Monday night after being roundly booed with every touch.
00:23:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
They missed out on Benjamin Sesko, and they've just had a £50 million pound bid for Wolves as Jürgen Strand-Larsen rejected as well.

Alexander Issac's Potential Move to Liverpool

00:24:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
But there are some cogs that are now moving ever so slowly, so that could open the way for Isaac to Liverpool move.
00:24:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
According to Sky Sports here in the UK, Brentford are now targeting Borussia Dortmund's Max Baer, which could greenlight the Joanne Wisse move to Newcastle.
00:24:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
And Newcastle also expected to go back in for Larson with an improved offer to Wolves. So a lot of things need to happen if the Alexander-Issac deal becomes a reality and to beat that Monday 7pm UK deadline and you know become a Liverpool player.
00:24:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
So we've got a few days to see what happens. That is all for today. You've been listening to the Daily Liverpool podcast. brought to you by the Global Sports Podcast Network.
00:25:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
We'll be back tomorrow as we start our build-up to Sunday's big game. It seems like we say that every week in the Premier League, but this one is a big one.
00:25:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
The Reds are hosting one of the title challenges this season, Arsenal. So please support the show by following us wherever you get your podcasts. Until next time, thank you for listening.
