Introduction and Hosts' Background

00:00:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello, you are listening to the Daily Liverpool podcast on the Global Sports Podcast Network. It's just me and Tom today, the two Surrey boys.

International Break Opinions

00:00:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
Tom, ah good to have you here um on a very boring occasion because there's no football to talk about because it's the international break.
00:00:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
So are you bored or do you enjoy watching these Moldova games?
00:00:34
Tom Goward
Absolutely not. I hate the international break, to be honest with you.
00:00:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
thought.
00:00:38
Tom Goward
I just think we have that long summer with no football. I know the Club World Cup was on, but we're not counting that.

Birthday Blues and Football

00:00:43
Tom Goward
And then you come back for three game weeks and it's like, off they go for two weeks again. that I hate it And then they go again in October. And do they go again in November? I'm pretty sure.
00:00:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't know and I don't care.
00:00:53
Tom Goward
do. I do. i know i know when it's an international break because um my birthday is on the 6th of September, so there's never any football on. There's always an international break since I was young.
00:01:05
Tom Goward
So um it's a bit of a boring time it's it this week for football.
00:01:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
We'll do, I'll tell you what, in a few days we'll do a birthday celebration episode for Tom Goward, courtesy of GSPN. How about that?
00:01:15
Tom Goward
ah Brilliant.
00:01:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
Where we talk about Curtis Jones for a full hour.
00:01:18
Tom Goward
That'd be great. That is my ideal podcast. Yeah.
00:01:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Unfortunately, I mean, I used to love the international break um because I used to go to all the England matches. um um i'm i'm I live in London, so it's just a tube away. But when it's games like Andorra and it's happening in Villa Park because they know that they wouldn't be able to sell out Wembley and then they've got another match over in Serbia, you just don't have any interest,

World Cup and Euros: International Break Highlights

00:01:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
really. You just kind of want to see, you know,
00:01:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
players like Joe Gomez, see if they get into the team and see how they fare in international football. But ultimately, it's just the World Cup and the Euros and maybe at a push the Nations League that you're um looking forward to when it comes to England from my perspective.

Curtis Jones' England Squad Exclusion

00:02:05
Tom Goward
ah can we Can we just point out quickly, just so we're talking about and Liverpool players in the England squad, how Curtis... I know but there's a running joke on here.
00:02:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
go
00:02:14
Tom Goward
But no, no, no, no. I'm going to say something good at about him. I'm going to say something good about him.
00:02:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
okay
00:02:17
Tom Goward
but How Curtis Jones has not been called up to the England squad and Ruben Loftus-Cheek has.
00:02:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah okay go um
00:02:22
Tom Goward
Like, I don't watch much of him, but surely Jones is slightly better.
00:02:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Okay, right.
00:02:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
Loftus-Cheek is a great player. I'm not going to discredit him at all, but I did see Curtis Jones in the England team against Ireland, I believe. um I can't remember when that was. It was either this year or last year.
00:02:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
And ah he was great in that midfield. Absolutely terrific. Just slice the Irish midfield apart. um Anyway, we're we're talking about international football quite a lot. Let's talk about Liverpool now um with the very limited news coming out about Liverpool.

Chiesa and Champions League Squad Decisions

00:02:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'd say the big one today is Chiesa and it's for the wrong reasons, unfortunately, because once we, mean, this season we've started to see a little bit more of Federico Chiesa and suddenly he's now not in the Champions League squad.
00:03:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah uh this is a difficult one because we've just got isak him and he plays in a pretty similar role to kiesa because kiesa came on uh when ekatike wasn't finishing the match and he would sort of play as a striker for a bit um are you at all worried about federico kiesa's role in this future liverpool team
00:03:36
Tom Goward
ah No, not really. i think i think for the Champions League, I think I read that obviously you have to have the homegrown players, isn't it?
00:03:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:03:45
Tom Goward
And obviously we've included Engamoa, Danza and Nguyenyi.
00:03:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
Quota. Yeah.
00:03:50
Tom Goward
So, um yeah, Nguyenyi, sorry.
00:03:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
Neony.
00:03:53
Tom Goward
Yeah. um ah Yes, I believe that's the reason. But... um No, I'm not worried at all. Look, he barely played a role last season, right? He's somehow managed to stay this season, um if that's through his choice or through Slott's choice, I'm not sure.
00:04:11
Tom Goward
Obviously, he got that goal against Bournemouth, which sort helped him maybe a little bit, but I don't think Chiesa's winning us the Champions League, do you know what mean?
00:04:22
Tom Goward
So, as much as I like him and stuff, I don't think it's going to be a massive loss in terms of sort of our Champions League run.
00:04:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, with regards to Chiesa, I feel like a lot of his criticism comes from him not settling into the Premier League yet.
00:04:36
Tom Goward
right.
00:04:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
I know he hasn't had much of a chance. I mean, he's only, i don't think he's ever even started a match for Liverpool ah in the Premier League. Maybe one or two, but he usually comes on with 10 minutes to go um or when we have a bit of a shortage up front as we have had this season before we got Isak.
00:04:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And this sort of environment where we are playing European football, um in this case against Atletico Madrid, where in La Liga they play a bit more slowly and Atletico Madrid particularly are quite defensive and play on the counter-attack. And I think when you've just got more time on the ball as you would have playing against Simeone's Atleti, I feel like this would have benefited Chiesa.
00:05:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
You know, i say it's weird.
00:05:24
Tom Goward
yeah Yeah, potentially. but Yeah, you make a good point, potentially. But I think also... we've, there's just a lot of, we've just got too many better players now ahead of him um with the, and you know, with Isak coming in.
00:05:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, it's true.
00:05:38
Tom Goward
I think, I think with that slower play, I think Verts will do well. You know, we've, we've seen Verts proven in the Champions League, won multiple man of the match awards, player the match awards in the Champions League.
00:05:49
Tom Goward
um You know, that sort of format might suit him a bit better. he's not the best to start at Liverpool in the Premier League, but there's a long way to go yet for the rest of the season for Verts. But, um Like I said, Chiesa wasn't going to be the guy that was going to make or break our Champions League campaign.
00:06:05
Tom Goward
um Yes, of course, you want to see everyone included, but can only take 22 players. And unfortunately, you know, we've left out a guy who barely paid for us last year and cost £13 million. pounds So, you know, it's sad, but it's not the end of the world, to be honest with
00:06:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
the
00:06:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah ah But, you know, three goalkeepers, three goalkeepers for a Champions League game, and you can't have someone who... ah would be beneficial in this sort of game, in my opinion. I mean, we can go around in circles talking about, is he good enough?
00:06:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah Is there just too much competition? And yes, there is very, very healthy competition in this new Liverpool team with the attacking um prowess that we have. But it's it's strange because I don't get it.
00:06:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
22 players for the Champions League squad. is Has it always been 22? so Because I thought it used to be a 25-man squad.
00:07:03
Tom Goward
Yeah, I think it's come down, isn't it?
00:07:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
Is that... ah hi ah It must have come down.
00:07:05
Tom Goward
looked like It looked like less names on the sheet. But and the three goalkeepers, I guess we haven't had Alisson's yearly injury yet, um you know, that he sort of picks up at some point during the season. So, you know, maybe they're just preparing that Alisson picks up. And then, of course, if your then backup keeper gets injured or is sent off or whatever, you need to...
00:07:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's such a hypothetical though.
00:07:25
Tom Goward
ah I know, i know, but like if it's going to happen, right, it probably will happen at Liverpool. So, um yeah, third keepers is a strange one, but I can see why they've done it.
00:07:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
and i Yeah, yeah.
00:07:37
Tom Goward
um But maybe Keiser not being in the Champions League squad means that as' we're going see more of him in the league and the cup competitions. you know we've We've got Saints in the first round or you know the third round of the League Cup.
00:07:50
Tom Goward
He's probably going to play in that. We might have an easy FA Cup couple of fixtures.
00:07:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:07:55
Tom Goward
you know Maybe you're playing the lesser Premier League games. um you know I'm talking about playing sort of a bottom half teams. um Maybe not starting. Like you said, i think I can't recall him starting in the Premier League.
00:08:07
Tom Goward
um He might have done, like you said, once or twice. but um So maybe we'll just see more of him

Harvey Elliott's Loan to Aston Villa

00:08:12
Tom Goward
in elsewhere. you know it's just Just because he's been left of the Champions League squad doesn't mean we're never going to see him um again.
00:08:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I know what you mean. And it's it's a good rule, in my opinion, that ah teams can only have 17 non-homegrown players in their team. Speaking of a homegrown player that we have just gotten rid of, Harvey Elliott.
00:08:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah Obviously, he's on loan at Villa ah with an obligation to buy for £35 million. But there is a buyback clause in his contract upon signing for Aston Villa. so That is, i know you're a big fan of Harvey Elliott.
00:08:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's got to be great news and ah extra sense of security in that, for sure.
00:08:58
Tom Goward
100%. I was a bit happier seeing that today, um seeing that news. It'd be interesting to know what that figure is, um the buyback clause figure. um But 35 million maybe is a little less. I think you know if you look at some of the other players that sort of left, um you know sort of made moves this summer, like ah James McAtee and Amari Hutchinson and players like that that played in the under-21s or the one or the twenty three so
00:09:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah,
00:09:28
Tom Goward
And they went for similar prices. I'd like to think Harvey Leeds a bit better than that and had way more experience in the Premier League. um So £35 million, I feel, is a little tad bit low if you base it off that.
00:09:40
Tom Goward
However, it's still £35 million for a young player.
00:09:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah I agree.
00:09:43
Tom Goward
um And if there's a buyback in there, even if it's £30 million or £35 million, I don't know what that thing is.
00:09:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, if if Nani Madawaka is 50 million, then surely ah Harvey Elliott is ah even more than that, in my opinion, because he's a far better player.
00:09:49
Tom Goward
Yeah.
00:09:53
Tom Goward
Yeah.
00:09:58
Tom Goward
Yeah.
00:09:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
Not to mention that Fulham just signed Shakhtar Donetsk left winger Kevin for 40 million, someone we've never heard of.
00:10:05
Tom Goward
Yeah, there we go.
00:10:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
someone who plays in the Ukrainian league, not to mention Chelsea signed another Ukrainian player for 80 million and he's dreadful and now has been done for doping offenses.
00:10:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
So, you know, 35 million is peanuts when it comes to top quality talent, especially someone as young as Harvey Elliott, who was the best player of the under 23s Euros tournament in any team.
00:10:19
Tom Goward
Yeah.
00:10:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Um, So, yeah, it's it's a weird one for me, but I'm glad to see that there is a buyback clause in there for him, especially with his versatility as well. He can play in a number 10, he can play on the right wing, and he can score goals, he can assist. He doesn't give the ball away too often.
00:10:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
Very good in tight spaces, and he will be a huge, huge ah move for Aston Villa for sure. And ah obviously, never forget when Harvey Elliott was... um but He refused to meet Sergio Ramos because he ah didn't like what he did to Salah.
00:11:05
Tom Goward
Yeah, exactly.
00:11:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's a man who loves Liverpool.
00:11:08
Tom Goward
Exactly. And I think as well, don't forget, Salah is not going to be there probably beyond the next two years. um If Harvey sees him in that right wing area, if that's the way you think he'll play, obviously he's a completely different player to Salah, not as quick. But, you know, go and smash it for two years at Villa and then we'll buy him back.
00:11:26
Tom Goward
what I Buy him back. Salah's gone. There might be, you know, he's got two solid years of first team proper football in the Premier League for a,
00:11:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm.
00:11:36
Tom Goward
side that are playing European football as well this year, don't forget. So he's still got that element. And then, you know, he can come back when he's 24, 25. then, you know, he's still signing for six years at 25.
00:11:49
Tom Goward
Sounds crazy, doesn't it, considering he's here for so long?
00:11:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
and just yeah i'm just I'm just trying to work out who would stand in his way of starting in that team. because <unk>t I don't really know if there's anyone that plays in his exact position at Villa because he's sort of number 10 role. and they Was it maybe to replace um Jacob Ramsey?
00:12:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Maybe because they gave him one.
00:12:10
Tom Goward
Yeah, potentially. Obviously, you've got Morgan Rodgers there,
00:12:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, but he's more on the left-hand side.
00:12:16
Tom Goward
Yeah, yeah, I reckon you're right.
00:12:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
Harvey's up more on the right-hand side.
00:12:18
Tom Goward
I reckon you're right. I reckon Jacob Ramsey's probably their replacement. And obviously they've got Sancho in as well. um They needed a left winger and Lindelof as well.
00:12:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh goodness, yeah. Completely forgot about Sancho.
00:12:28
Tom Goward
Yeah, so, no, Villa sort of had an interesting game.
00:12:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
but Not bad window actually for Aston Villa.
00:12:33
Tom Goward
Yeah, well, they needed to have one, didn't they?
00:12:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
Big
00:12:35
Tom Goward
I mean, they're struggling. They're second bottom of the league in the three games, so.
00:12:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
like time
00:12:39
Tom Goward
Yeah, interesting.
00:12:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, they did. They really did. And they need more depth after going into European football again.
00:12:45
Tom Goward
Mm-hmm.
00:12:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
um I wanted to talk more about the Champions League squad. I mean, while Chiesa misses out on the flip side of that, Rio and Gamora is in. um Is that a big confidence boost for someone who's just turned 17 years old to be included in the Champions League squad, despite the fact that they needed him for homegrown quota?
00:13:07
Tom Goward
Yeah, i I think he's in there for his talent, not for that reason, you know. um i mean, that boy must be pinching himself. He he makes his Premier League debut, he scores, he turns 17, he signs his professional deal and now he's in the Champions League squad, you know, travelling to the likes...
00:13:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:13:24
Tom Goward
of of Atletico Madrid, Real Madrid are coming to us. He's going away to Galatasaray and Marseille. You know, some hostile stadiums that that will really show his test of character. But, no, good for He does that.
00:13:39
Tom Goward
they've they've seen something in him, right? We've seen glimpses of him, but they know they've got a player on their hands, um Liverpool.
00:13:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:13:45
Tom Goward
And what better way than just to look at Laminia Moura. not saying he's gonna be as good as him, but, you know, he was lighting up in the Champions League last year at 17 years old. So um maybe that's who he sort of looks up to and thinks he can be like.
00:13:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'd just like to see him in a big match at an atmosphere of an environment where he's playing against some of the best defenders in the world.
00:14:02
Tom Goward
Yeah.
00:14:06
Tom Goward
Mm-hmm.
00:14:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
Um, just for a moment, because I always thought this about Ben Doak as well, before he left, I'd love to see him come on in a match against ah proven defender and I remember when Ben Doak just completely sat down Luca Dean with a body feint on the right wing in the final moments against Aston Villa one match and I just thought this this guy is going to be insane and now he's gone I don't know if we put a buyback clause in his contract I can't remember off the top of my head but if we have okay that makes me feel a bit better um because that man is going to go on to great things um so I'd like to
00:14:32
Tom Goward
yeah
00:14:36
Tom Goward
I think we did. i think we did you
00:14:44
Tom Goward
But but but when you think that we sold in for sorry when you think we sold him for 25 million and yet we sold Harvey Elliott for 35 million, like there's there's more than a 10 million van like difference between those two players, I feel.
00:14:56
Tom Goward
But yeah, it's just a weird one.
00:14:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
There's got to be a sell-on clause. ah There has to be.
00:15:01
Tom Goward
I just think Liverpool have been so good at their business all summer and I feel like they've rushed to get Harvey out the door on the last day and just accepted the first offer that was thrown at them.
00:15:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, i I don't know. Well, there were links of him going to Tottenham Hotspur as well, I suppose, but...
00:15:16
Tom Goward
me that would have been good yeah I would quite like to see him there to be honest under a good manager um
00:15:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
um
00:15:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, it would that would make sense, yes. We'll take a short break now and then we'll talk about some of the other stories that have been happening around Liverpool Football Club. But first, it's time for you to hear from our sponsors, Bionic.
00:16:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
So, um, ah in the wake of the deadline day drama that we had a couple of days ago, ah Apparently Mark Gay is extremely unhappy after being denied a move to Liverpool at the last minute and feels he behaved correctly by continuing to play for Palace ah before they pulled the plug on that deal. And also ah there are reports from Ed Ahrens from the Guardian newspaper that he is planning to release a statement to

Mark Gay's Transfer Disappointment

00:16:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
soon too. Um...
00:16:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Now, I'm not sure what he's hoping to achieve by releasing this statement, Tom, because the deadline day is shut. And yes, he did behave professionally and he didn't get any success from doing so, which is, you know, it's quite unfair on him, to be honest.
00:17:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah But why release his statement?
00:17:13
Tom Goward
Yeah, I guess at the end of the day, you have, there will people out there that want to know what's happened and what better way to hear it than from the person themselves.
00:17:25
Tom Goward
um
00:17:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:17:26
Tom Goward
That's the only reason I could think, I don't think he'll be throwing anyone under the bus. I think maybe he'll just be clarifying what's gone on maybe because We've gone on to an international break now and you might not get the chance for two weeks to explain what's gone on.
00:17:38
Tom Goward
With the power of social media that we've seen it with statements from all sorts of players trying to force moves and all this stuff all summer. um I did interest interestingly, someone at work today showed me, has a friend who's sort of in and around Palace.
00:17:52
Tom Goward
um That's all he said, he's sort of in and around Palace. And um he had a screenshot of a statement that was actually from Gehi if he was going to leave. um And basically he was going to go up on his social media and it was like,
00:18:05
Tom Goward
thank him for the memories they made special times he'll always have a place in his heart for palace but you know saw that generic stuff and obviously the the video that screenshots of the video but of you know it said like thank you skip and so i believe this thing was quite real um and it was like sort like an image and yeah
00:18:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, of course.
00:18:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, the package.
00:18:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, no, i saw the ah so I saw the whole video. The whole video was leaked. It wasn't just screenshots.
00:18:27
Tom Goward
all right okay i only saw screenshots interesting okay i didn't know the whole video
00:18:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
The entire thing. Yeah, and so the entire video was released. It was like compilations of him, ah you know, laughing around his teammates, celebrating on the Open Top Bus Parade after winning the FA Cup last season. All of the great memories. It was a really emotional package.
00:18:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then for all of this to be ready to be launched and then for that to be pulled from him in the last minute with Oliver Glasner, I don't know how reliable this story is, but apparently he was threatening to walk out if Mark Gay was to leave.
00:19:02
Tom Goward
ah I just,
00:19:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I just I it just shows you how much of a mess they made that into. And I completely understand why he is upset.
00:19:10
Tom Goward
there' There's no way there's no way a manager who's just got his team into Europe after winning the FA Cup in Community Shield is going to walk over one player, which has made it quite clear for all summer without being acting unprofessionally that he obviously wanted to move to Liverpool.
00:19:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:19:25
Tom Goward
Also, if you're other players in that squad, how would you feel that your manager's walked out on you because one player's left? like you you
00:19:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, no, it's crazy.
00:19:32
Tom Goward
is And I also read, again, I don't know how true it was, that apparently Steve Parrish was in a fitness class until six p m um and got out.
00:19:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
I feel this as well, yeah.
00:19:41
Tom Goward
and And I don't know the full story. I don't want to say things. But I think he said something like he got out of a fitness class and after six o'clock and then they realised they basically not signed a replacement. So he called the deal off.
00:19:52
Tom Goward
I mean, yeah, yeah he must have been sat waiting for hours after his medical appointment.
00:19:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
There's no way he wasn't... No...
00:19:57
Tom Goward
on his news, and now he's got to go away with England and and can go back to that Palace squad.
00:19:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah...
00:20:02
Tom Goward
but that It's probably kind bad time, right? Because you probably just want to get back to your Palace teammates, explain what's happened and get straight back into it. But they're going to sit on that for like two weeks now. And then they've all got to meet up after being away with their so their own countries. and and And now I'm worried that we're going to be rivaled by other teams. you know if if a Madrid or someone come in next year for him,
00:20:25
Tom Goward
For free, are you going to say no? Probably not. you'd never say You never say no to Madrid, it's regardless of how good they
00:20:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's it's it's hard. I mean, I can't see Madrid coming in for him, ah to be honest. And, you know, he's always made it quite clear that he wants to go to Liverpool as well.
00:20:39
Tom Goward
are.
00:20:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
I also heard on TalkSport. This is from quite a reliable source on TalkSport. They had someone in that was well informed of everything going on. Apparently, Gaye, after completing his medical and having the meeting with Parrish, all of this, all which was going on at the time, there was a black cab outside of the building with Hazard's light on waiting for him ah to to go up to Liverpool.
00:21:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
And...
00:21:09
Tom Goward
Well, yeah, that's what i read. I read that the so system some senior people from Liverpool got down and were going to go back with him at sort of 6.5.6. um If that was going to drive up or fly up, I don't know what they were going to do.
00:21:20
Tom Goward
But um yeah so it was all sounded like and yeah it's all sound like it was in place.
00:21:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, maybe the cat was to take him to the airport.

Crystal Palace's Transfer Drama

00:21:26
Tom Goward
and The medical was obviously booked down in London. They had the documents ready. Everything was in place. and Palace have the right and fair play to them and they've managed to keep hold of him. But um from a player's point of view, and mentally as well, from a player's point of view, that that can't be good.
00:21:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, ah by the way, that is a reliable source because it's come from Fabrizio Romano. Glasner told Crystal Palace he was going to resign if they accepted to still sell gay without a new signing.
00:21:51
Tom Goward
Well, well they would have they've missed out on more money now than they would have done with letting Glasner go, I'll tell you.
00:21:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's just...
00:21:57
Tom Goward
so
00:21:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah like yeah i Yeah, maybe that's what swayed it.
00:21:58
Tom Goward
um maybe they were worried that
00:22:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's what must have swayed it because you havent you've lose you lose your captain and you lose your manager, both on the last day of the transfer window.
00:22:02
Tom Goward
Amen. Okay.
00:22:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
But this isn't unusual for Palace. They always wait until the final... stages of the transfer window to sign their players and it's not sustainable and now it's created this internal mess in the club I'm very interested to see if Gaye does release a statement obviously he's with the England squad at the moment ah preparing for the ah matches against Andorra and Serbia um but we'll my My question is, do you think we'll see the same Mark Gay this season?
00:22:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Do you think he'll be deterred by everything going off the pitch?
00:22:44
Tom Goward
Yeah, yeah. yeah
00:22:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Or do you think he might not even play?
00:22:50
Tom Goward
No, i think no he will i think he's too professional. We've seen that from him during this transfer window and as a player over the last few seasons. I think he's too professional to let something like that affect him.
00:23:01
Tom Goward
Obviously, it will always be in the back of your mind. He's human at the end of the day. So, yeah, he's going to play on him.
00:23:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:23:06
Tom Goward
But he's captain of a side that are playing in conference you know Europa Conference League football. And he's got a job to do. you know If he wants to get paid to deal from Palace, he's got do that job, but let's see what happens in January, right?
00:23:20
Tom Goward
We either poach him in January or he signs a pre-agreement.
00:23:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah Yeah, would you rather...
00:23:24
Tom Goward
I don't know how it all works, but we could still get him in January, right? Like, 20 million in January, 25 million in January.
00:23:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:23:29
Tom Goward
I know that's a lot for a player that's got six months left at that point, but at least he's yours then. Do you know what mean?
00:23:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
But it's 15 million less than we were going to pay anyway.
00:23:36
Tom Goward
Just pay the 25 million and Yeah, exactly.
00:23:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
So I think that would...
00:23:39
Tom Goward
And he's yours. And then you've got him for the important run-in in the rest of the season. January is what? What we are we now? September. So it's only three, four months away.
00:23:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:23:48
Tom Goward
So if you can just hold on that time.
00:23:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
and And also...
00:23:50
Tom Goward
but that time
00:23:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
Also, I wanted to ask you, if you're a Crystal Palace player and you're seeing this entire saga go on with your captain and now things are coming out that he's upset, very upset so that he couldn't leave the club, does that not become terrible for the team dressing room?
00:24:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm.
00:24:12
Tom Goward
No, because I think live Liverpool's a step up, right? Like, if Palace were at the top and he was going down, then maybe, because you'd be like, why would you want to leave a top club? But Palace is Liverpool on a whole other two levels than Crystal Palace, right?
00:24:27
Tom Goward
I know they've done that in the community shield, but forget that.
00:24:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:24:31
Tom Goward
But it's like with Newcastle, you know, the fans crying over Azak. You are not the top team. You are not the top team. City, Liverpool and Arsenal, and maybe Chelsea at the moment, are a whole other level or two up from where you are, regardless if you're playing Champions League football or not.
00:24:47
Tom Goward
You are not the top team in the country. And so, you know, the same goes with Palace. They're good and they've got good set-up. But I'll tell you who I'd be... I'll tell you, if you're walton if you're Adam Walton or as or Mateta, you're you're thinking, well, I'm probably going to get a big move in the next year or two.
00:25:08
Tom Goward
is this behaviour from Palace going to affect me? Alan Walton is not going to be at Palace forever. right He's going to get his move to one of the big sides. In fact, it ends up being Arsenal, Spurs, City, whatever.
00:25:20
Tom Goward
um I'm surprised no one really came in for Mateta this year, but you know he's probably one of their bigger assets as well.
00:25:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:25:27
Tom Goward
and We've got Ismail Assar, who you know could probably move potentially move on. I know he's at Watford and whatever, but...
00:25:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
I doubt that, to be honest.
00:25:35
Tom Goward
No, yeah.
00:25:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
don't think you've seen enough.
00:25:36
Tom Goward
You know, they're probably two big assets are probably Walton and and definitely Adam Walton.
00:25:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
but i But I understand your point about ah players wanting to move up.
00:25:41
Tom Goward
um
00:25:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
So that is quite a good point.
00:25:45
Tom Goward
Yeah, yeah.
00:25:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
The last thing I wanted to speak about, um and this is completely different from what we've been speaking about, you know, important things going on at the club. This is something off the pitch that is absolute

Mo Salah Defends Former Teammates

00:25:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
class. And that's from Mo Salah.
00:26:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Anfield edition, the Twitter page, ah puts a graphic up saying name a bigger upgrade in footballing history. It shows a picture of Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez at the top in black and white after leaving.
00:26:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then it's got a picture of Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak below them signing for Liverpool. Name a big upgrade in footballing history, of the scat is the caption.
00:26:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mo Salah replies, how about we celebrate the great signings without disrespecting the Premier League champions? How powerful of a statement is that from Mo Salah?
00:26:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
Because and you don't really, it doesn't strike me as, is um i was just saying, he doesn't really strike me as someone who would look at this sort of thing that with a lot of, um
00:26:39
Tom Goward
I mean, yeah, yeah. Go on. Carry on.
00:26:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, he he just he doesn't seem to me as someone who would look at these articles on Twitter. And then for him to put a statement out like that, it's such a good reminder that these footballers can see the stuff that these hooligans on Twitter are posting.
00:27:08
Tom Goward
Maybe that's why he's done it. Maybe he's just seen enough now. and And, you know, regardless of what you thought about Nunes or Diaz, he's right. Like, they're Premier League champions. And at the moment, you know, there is no upgrade. All right, we spent a lot of money, but Verts has not hit the ground running.
00:27:26
Tom Goward
And we haven't even seen the exact play a minute for Liverpool yet. So talk about an upgrade. Like... oh right, yes, I know they probably will be an upgrade, but currently right now, you can't call them upgrade because Diaz and Nunes did their jobs for Liverpool.
00:27:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, it's pre-empting it.
00:27:41
Tom Goward
you know what I mean? Diaz and Liverpool have done their jobs for Liverpool. Diaz and, sorry, yeah. Diaz and Nunes have done their jobs for Liverpool. um You know, Nunes, look, it didn't work out. We know what happened there. We got some money for him, fine.
00:27:55
Tom Goward
We've also got some decent money for Diaz for a 28-year-old with two years left on his contract. So, you know,
00:28:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
Who, by the way, is looking phenomenal at buy-in at the moment.
00:28:02
Tom Goward
Exactly.
00:28:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
and
00:28:03
Tom Goward
So, you know, that's that's these pages, these fan pages, not just Liverpool, but all these football fan pages just really need to think sometimes about what they're doing because it does affect, you know, as you can see, like Mo Salah has responded.
00:28:16
Tom Goward
and And if youre if you're that account, you're probably buzzing because Salah's retweeted your post. But at the same time, you know... these players do see this stuff and it can not affect them on the pitch, but, you know, just remember what Diaz and Nunes had done, you know, regardless of what you thought of them, they were, they were game winners for us at some points.
00:28:37
Tom Goward
And Diaz really, you know, scored a lot of goals for us last season that probably ultimately helped us win the league. So I just think all these fan accounts just need to relax and just, just enjoy the football that's being played and just report on any news and matches.
00:28:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:28:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:28:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
I've... I've never understood people who slander Diaz, by the way. I mean, Slandering any player outwardly on Twitter for everyone to see who you are, I just think that's ridiculous in the first place.
00:28:54
Tom Goward
Ah, it,
00:29:04
Tom Goward
and And also, and and then i credit the credit sorry their credibility as an account now, because Liverpool's greatest player in the last five, ten years sort of dissed you on X.
00:29:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Because, yes, we're football fans...
00:29:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm.
00:29:17
Tom Goward
Like, credibility as an account now, you're just going to be like, well, why would I want to follow that?
00:29:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. um
00:29:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
Exactly. um I mean, I don't look at these football pages anyway, because Twitter is just an absolute cesspit of horrible people.
00:29:28
Tom Goward
Yeah.
00:29:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
But um i I do really think that Diaz was a terrific player. And even if he wasn't, for you to outwardly with it by the way this account is verified on twitter so more people can see their posts because that's what elon musk did to that app um for you to post that online making an agenda against a player is not the great yes we're all fans of the sport yes there are some players that we're all guilty of slandering um but
00:30:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
you do not need to diss one in order to like the other it's like do you like apples also you hate oranges sort of thing it's it's just stupid um and you know mo salah he's always been a class act hasn't he more people should learn from him as um as he just makes a great example for an ambassador of the sport and
00:30:19
Tom Goward
Yeah.
00:30:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's just a man who gets on with it and sets the examples for everyone else. He is the level that people aspire to become, you know, and that's both his football ability and just him as a person off the pitch because he calls stuff out.
00:30:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
And that's what I love about him.
00:30:53
Tom Goward
Yeah, yeah, exactly. And you just summed it out perfectly. To be honest, I don't think I could put that in any better words. um yeah The thing with Salah is he barely... He's active on social media, but he never writes captions on his Instagram posts or anything.
00:31:08
Tom Goward
Obviously, he retweeted that thing the other week about the the player that was killed.
00:31:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:31:13
Tom Goward
um You know, sort of outing at UEFA, I think it was, wasn't it?
00:31:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh, in the the Palestinian player, yeah.
00:31:18
Tom Goward
Yeah, yeah. And also, he's done

Mo Salah's Social Media Presence

00:31:20
Tom Goward
this. So maybe this is sort of a new mode where he's just going to start calling out stuff he doesn't like because he's had enough of staying silent. Yeah.
00:31:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's achieved it all. You know, he no one's going to challenge him on anything.
00:31:28
Tom Goward
Yeah. Yeah.
00:31:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's the he's basically like the king calling things out.
00:31:34
Tom Goward
Yeah, exactly.
00:31:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
that's what That's what it is. But it's in the football world. um Yeah, I just i I feel like he's achieved so much in his career now that he feels like he doesn't have to take things as seriously when it comes to towing the line.
00:31:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
and And I absolutely love that. And on that note, on that nice positive note at the end from Salah, I think we'll end the podcast there. um I was worried before we started recording this, Tom, that we wouldn't have enough to talk about to make a full episode. But we've actually gone two minutes over.
00:32:08
Tom Goward
I told you you'd have stuff to talk about.
00:32:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
So that's all worked out. Yeah, it always just works out that way, doesn't it? So you've been listening to the Daily Liverpool podcast on the Global Sports Podcast Network. We'll see you in the next one.
