Introduction to Solarpreneur and Taylor's Journey

00:00:03
Speaker
Welcome to the Solarpreneur podcast where we teach you to take your solar business to the next level. My name is Taylor Armstrong and I went from $50 in my bank account and struggling for groceries to closing 150 deals in the year and cracking the code on why sales reps fail. I teach you to avoid the mistakes I made and bring in the top solar dogs of the industry to let you in on the secrets of generating more leads, following up like a pro and closing more deals.
00:00:31
Speaker
What is a solar printer you might ask? A solar printer is a new breed of solar pro that is willing to do whatever it takes to achieve mastery and you are about to become one.

Door to Door Con Highlights and Networking

00:00:41
Speaker
Hey solar printers, today I'm going to be giving you my recap and review of door to door con eight almost said solar con. Um, so if you're wondering if you should go next year or whatever questions you have, then this is the podcast for you. Welcome to the show. My name is Taylor Armstrong. We're here to help you close more deals, generate more leads and referrals.
00:01:02
Speaker
and hopefully have a much better time in the solar industry. I'm recovering from a little sickness here, been grinding too hard, I guess. Um, so apologize if I sound a little out of it. Hopefully I make it through this whole thing without having a coughing attack.
00:01:18
Speaker
That's what happens when you have kids, they get everyone sick, been running through our whole household there. But we're going to bring this episode to you and excited to give just some feedback that I got from door to door con and ah just highlight a few of the speakers I saw. There was some great content there. So I definitely think it is worth it to go to these things. And hopefully you gathered that I've been, in I've been to, I think every one, every ah door door con event.
00:01:47
Speaker
Except for maybe one. So it must be pretty good if I keep going to them. Part of it is just the networking and ah doing podcasts. They like to get done there.

Melissa Romiza's Workshop: Effective Blitz Strategies

00:01:58
Speaker
But I think it helps to have a goal when you go to the events. Is your goal, is it more networking? Is it looking at different products, um different tools you want to check out for your team?
00:02:11
Speaker
If you have a goal, then it makes it easier to figure out what speakers do you want to go to? What vendors do you want to check out? Do you want to be more networking? Um, definitely great things to identify before you pull up to the event. Okay. So I'm going to, um, pull up a few of my notes. The, uh, I got there, the event, it was a little different this year. and They did it's Tuesday through Thursday.
00:02:38
Speaker
which usually it's Thursday through Saturday. So a little bit of unique schedule. I actually like that because as door to door people, we all know that weekends are the king of door knocking. So when people are home, so I actually prefer that cause I made it back for the weekend. Um, actually was able to close, um, a deal or two on the weekends just because of the prime knocking availability and being back for appointments so that I did like that they changed it um but uh yeah and I guess side notes if you're flying in these things I got there at like 2 30 in the morning to Utah on a Tuesday and uh yeah maybe don't fly spirit okay got the cheap spirit fight there
00:03:24
Speaker
And I paid the price for that. I stayed with my parents. My parents there are there in Utah. So shout out to my sister for coming and getting me at two in the morning. Went to a few speakers and I'm going to give you just highlights of the main two. I'm not going to make this an hour long podcast going to every single highlight, um but I will give two highlights of the um workshops that I went to on the first day. yeah And the first one.
00:03:50
Speaker
was ah Melissa Romiza. She's one of my favorite people in door to door. One of the top female reps in ah door to door. I have a ton of respect for what she does with her team. So I went to the first day she did a workshop on just how to run a perfect blitz.
00:04:08
Speaker
I think was the name. And ah let me tell you, I thought I was running decent blitzes, but after I saw her workshop, after she went into the level of detail, level of attention that she puts into these blitzes into the organization, I'm like, man, my blitzes suck compared to her. So um I picked up a ton of tips. So just to give you a few highlights.
00:04:30
Speaker
She organizes these blitzes months and months beforehand. Okay, she figures out the number of recruits she wants. It's not just a free for all. She's figuring out how many recruits she wants at the blitz. She's figuring out obviously the housing before she's running interviews with the recruits coming on. She's not just letting it be a free for all. She's making sure that there's not exceptions made for people showing up late to the blitz.
00:04:55
Speaker
her leaving early if you're doing a blitz with the team you gotta be there the whole time no exceptions and you gotta be there on time and then she went through a bunch of different steps um but the highlights where she delegates every step of the blitz um as far as like recruiting interviews Car group assignments, announcements, housing, onboarding agenda, slicks, food, ah gear, area management training, training calendar, a whole bunch of other things. Um, she delegates and she assigns a leader to that. So she's doing a few of the categories, but then she's assigning leaders to take over the delegation.
00:05:34
Speaker
of each specific theme there. And then she's creating Google Docs to to share with the leaders and reference all aspects of the Blitz. So that was really cool detail. Housing, she makes sure that if she's getting multiple Airbnb's, she's getting them close to each other. She told a story where um she One time didn't pay attention to how far away the houses were and one airbb Airbnb to the next. It was 30 minutes. So they would run correlations um out of their main air Airbnb. The other reps had to drive there and come to find out.
00:06:12
Speaker
they had to pay for a toll road. So ended up being, I think she said a couple thousand between everybody that they spent just in the toll roads um to get to the correlations every day in the other blitz house. So yeah, definitely didn't think about that one, but that is a good point. and We haven't really had to worry about that here in California, but hey, a lot of places they got toll roads and something you want to think about.

Introducing the Solar Scout App

00:06:39
Speaker
So some of you already know that I run my own door to door sales team here in San Diego. And as we are gearing up for the summer, I realized if we do the same thing we always did, we're going to get the same results. But if I want to increase my deal flow, I need to do something different to get an advantage. Then we discovered an app called Solar Scout. But it's not a door knocking app. It's a data platform that shows us who is likely to go solar in our market.
00:07:04
Speaker
It shows us who has previously applied for solar but later cancelled the deal, who has moved in recently, and even how much electricity the homes are using in a given neighborhood. It's been working for a lot of teams across the country and now I'm on board too. I'm going to be one of the first to use Solar Scout in San Diego so I decided to partner up, but I told them hey, I'm going to talk about Solar Scout on my show, you need to get my listeners a great deal, and they did.
00:07:28
Speaker
So go to solar scout.app forward slash Taylor and book a demo with them and you'll get 10% off your first month when you sign up. That's solar scout dot.app forward slash Taylor. Okay. Back to the show. Um, the other step was she does training calls up until, uh, three weeks prior to the blitz.
00:07:52
Speaker
Um, and then the calls it's more or less the first one overview of product offerings, market insights. The second call is script memorization walkthrough of the CRM calendar set up. And then the third call is finalizing housing assignments, car groups.
00:08:11
Speaker
rules, goals, and expectations. um And again, she's creating Google Docs for almost every every rep that that comes on the Blitz. They have access to ah sort of a training guide, just a shared Google Doc that has all the details of the Blitz. It has exactly who they should contact for their needs, whether it's area, whether it's um help with the script, whatever. They know exactly who they need to contact.
00:08:39
Speaker
and who's going to be available for them. And then it has ah the script and everything they need to know for training. um And then last couple of things on that, just to keep it concise, is she does she makes sure everyone has proper gear. I think this is something we overlook, whether it's a Blitz or whether everyday working in our home markets. Make sure you have the correct gear for your people.
00:09:06
Speaker
Yeah, especially for I hear this from women reps is that ah sometimes they don't have like women polos, right? You want to make sure you have proper fitting gear. You want to make sure you have shirts for the ladies on your team and just make sure you're taking care of everybody. um And then another last couple of things is she collects feedback from the participants after every blitz.
00:09:30
Speaker
And she makes adjustments. um So so good. I've been on blitzes where it is just total chaos, total disorganization. No wonder I mean, it is it is a girl running the blitz. So you would expect a little bit a higher level of organization. But hey, even for just the all guys blitzes, I think we can all do better. We shouldn't have 20 people sleeping in.
00:09:53
Speaker
all over the floor. That's another thing. I've been on a lot of blitzes where I'm just sleeping all over the floors. Um, last one I was sleeping in the closet. Hey, so, uh, yeah, I have a level of organization. If you are running blitzes and, um, yeah, definitely hit up Melissa. If you want to hear more about how she runs the blitzes, but got a ton of good takeaways from that.

Critique of the Solar Sales Panel Q&A

00:10:15
Speaker
Okay. And then the last Um, the one other, uh, panel I went to that day was the solar panel pun intended, right? The solar cells panel and they had the panel of, you know, solar pros up there answering questions. And so at one issue I had with this is they just let it be a free for all people ask, ask their questions. And I actually liked how solar con did it. If you went to solar con last year, um, they didn't let it just be a free for all for the questions. They had like exact valuable questions that they're going to ask cause
00:10:47
Speaker
The problem with letting it be a free-for-all is some people just, no offense, ask dumb questions, ask questions that aren't relevant to many people. And I thought this solar panel unfortunately turned into into a little bit of this um with questions that weren't super relevant, um that didn't apply to out to everyone that was i'm listening in, right? And so that was one problem that I noticed with that. But one takeaway I did get, speaking of takeaways, loving my transitions today, um but they talked about how should you do a pullback or a takeaway, whether you're setting an appointment or whether you're in a sales presentation in the home. And they talked about a lot of newer people, a lot of
00:11:31
Speaker
um reps aren't having as much success. They'll do these takeaways. They'll do these pullbacks. Hey, you might not qualify. Hey, I don't know if we can do this, um but they won't give any reason. They'll just leave it at that. So a takeaway I got um is that you need to give specific reasons for why aren't they going to qualify? um Why can we possibly not service their home?
00:11:54
Speaker
And if you get specific reasons, hey, because of your electric panel, hey, because instead of drying up, hey, because Trump's going into office and there's going to be a lot of potential changes coming with the energy credits, the tax credits, you know, whatever specific reasons you want to give for doing a takeaway, that's going to help you. Okay, so those were a few. Yeah, a few just notes I took from the conference.

Evaluating VIP Tickets at Door to Door Con

00:12:21
Speaker
And um that I'm excited to bring you guys the podcast did record a bunch of content and bunch of great podcasts. So you guys are in for a treat.
00:12:31
Speaker
Those are going to be absolute fire. They're going to be dropping over the coming weeks. So stay tuned. We got some great guests coming up for you. One other thing that I'll say is this year, um, if you did get a VIP tickets, then in my opinion, probably wasn't worth it this year. I was looking at the difference between VIP in general, and I did tell a few people, I'll get a VIP ticket if you can. I just didn't see a ton of value added to justify getting a VIP tickets.
00:12:59
Speaker
So Sam would probably, Sam Tiger would probably kill me if he's listening to this, but hopefully they make some improvements in the offering for people that buy a VIP ticket. Cause those tickets, they're over a thousand bucks. Um, you get the VIP dinner one night, which was cool. And then you get so-called VIP room. This will staff snacks.
00:13:20
Speaker
But the problem with that, I did go into this VIP room that I noticed no one was even blocking it off. So it looked like anyone could go in there at any time. And they just had some bags of chip ah chips, a couple drinks.
00:13:36
Speaker
Um, they did have guys that were doing kind of a soda bar type thing, which was nice. Um, but I don't know if it's because they're just not verifying who was going in there or if they were out of it. When I went back on the second day, they were pretty much wiped clean of everything. They didn't have any chips left. I think they had a few other snacks. They didn't have any of that left. All their drinks were mostly gone. So if you are considering getting a VIP tickets for next year, maybe unless they change up, make some adjustments to that.
00:14:05
Speaker
I would probably say it's not worth the extra money that you would spend um unless there's you know something specific you want to get out of going to the VIP dinner. Yeah, I would say probably not worth the money right now. But overall, great events, you know always some tweaks that they can make, always some

Promoting SolarCon and Podcast Resources

00:14:22
Speaker
improvements. But ah speaking of next events, we've got SolarCon coming up.
00:14:28
Speaker
And at the time of this podcast, they just decreased the discount level a little bit. I think it was a 30% discount. We can get you, I think it is down to 20 or 25%. And then that discount level is, I think it's available for another couple of weeks before it goes down again. So if you have not gotten your tickets to solar con go grab them it's going to be a dope event it's in vegas this time around and um just the premiere event for solar pros right now always look forward to that one as well as door to door con so i hope you got a few
00:15:01
Speaker
Takeaways and a few insights on whether if you should attend door to door con next year or if you didn't attend I hope some of the um notes I took helped you if you're running blitzes and um Stay tuned for the guests we got coming up and we will see you on the next episode What's up, solarpreneurs? Hope you enjoyed the episode. Before you run out and start selling more solar yourself, wanted to let you know about an exciting new cheat sheet we created specifically for you in mind.
