Introduction and Host Updates

Global Sports Podcast Network
Welcome, welcome everybody, sit down, get yourself cup of get yourself a biscuit, join us for That Saturday Feeling, episode 20. You'll see Nick and I, we're normally wearing our Derby top or our Wrexham top, we're both in work clothes.
00:00:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's been a busy work day, hasn't it, Nick?
00:00:25
Nick Britten
It has. I've literally walked onto the microphone and ah following a three-hour journey back from London. And I walked, i got the train up this afternoon.
00:00:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
It
00:00:33
Nick Britten
I've been working in London all day. Got the train up, drove back from the station. You'll know this, Ken. And anybody who's ever been to Derby UK will notice driving around Derby UK is a pain in the backside.

Football Focus: Key Questions and League Standings

00:00:44
Nick Britten
So it took me almost a third the amount of time to drive three miles back from the station as it did to get up on the train from London. um I literally walked into the house, sat down straight on the microphone.
00:00:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
it is horrible.
00:00:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
What a pro. What an absolute pro you are. And I'm not talking professional. Right. Okay. We've got, uh, we've got a lot to talk, lots to talk about today. Um, but first, as we always, as we're tending to do, uh, at the moment is we just reflect very briefly on the most important question in football, which is are Leicester Derby and Rex? I'm going to end up in the same league next year.
00:01:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
Leicester are confirmed crap. They are relegated. Um, but But how bad are Derby? Are they going to survive in the championship?

Easter Weekend and Derby County's Challenges

00:01:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
And are Wrexham going to come up? So over to you, our Derby correspondent. What do you reckon? It was a funny weekend, wasn't it?
00:01:40
Nick Britten
Everybody knows who knows anything about English football knows that the Easter weekend is absolutely pivotal because we play two games in a very short space of time. And when you are in a league like the Championship, which is obviously one level below the Premier League, it has been named, for very good reason, the most competitive football league in the entire world.
00:01:59
Nick Britten
And it probably is. And this season more than ever, because you've got teams at the top fighting to go up. You've got teams at the bottom fighting to stay up. And down at the bottom, you've got six or seven teams who could still get relegated with two games to go. It's incredibly tight down there. Derby had a very mixed weekend.
00:02:17
Nick Britten
um It started off on ah Good Friday, with a very dispiriting and rather miserable home defeat 1-0 to Luton Town, who are one of only, who are three teams at that stage who are below a single table.
00:02:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
That was abysmal.
00:02:31
Nick Britten
That was abysmal.
00:02:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
As a neutral, that was one of the most abysmal first-half performances of any team in the history of football.
00:02:36
Nick Britten
Yeah, it was. It was... You're not far off. But then, against all odds, although maybe perhaps not, we went to West Brom on Monday and won against a team that was fighting for the playoffs. And the extraordinary nature of the championship will tell you that...
00:02:55
Nick Britten
Until quite late on, when Cardiff were pegged back, um up until that moment, all bottom seven teams were winning, which is unbelievable. it's unheard of. These are seven teams who are the worst seven teams the league. They were all winning.
00:03:08
Nick Britten
Cardiff got pegged back. So six out of the seven teams ended up winning, which means for a club like Derby, and Luton will say the same, and... and Hull will say the same that you think, fantastic, a really important win, but actually it doesn't take you anywhere. It just kind of keeps you where you are.
00:03:22
Nick Britten
So we haven't we haven't gained ground, but we haven't

Charlton Athletic's Rise and League Implications

00:03:24
Nick Britten
lost ground. um There are two games to go. we sit one place above the relegation zone.
00:03:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
Same number of points, just better goal difference.
00:03:31
Nick Britten
We've got the same number of points as Luton Town, but we've just got a much better goal difference. so and and And it rolls on. And this this coming Saturday, um we've got Hull City away, and Hull are another one of the teams who are in it. So we could go above Hull if we beat them on Saturday.
00:03:49
Nick Britten
ah Luton play before us.
00:03:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you.
00:03:51
Nick Britten
ah But the reality is also that if Luton lose... And we win. And we'll know what Luton do by the time we kick off, by the way. If Luton lose and loser we win, it's all over. We stay up. We stay up for next season.
00:04:03
Nick Britten
Because although the the the teams below us could catch us, the maximum they could do is draw a level with us. And we've got a far superior goal difference to any of them. So it could all be over. Equally, the the chances are it'll go to the very last game of the season.
00:04:15
Nick Britten
and
00:04:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think we're looking at two draws. think Luton will draw, and I think Derby will draw at Hull. Now, in in League One, something strange has happened. All we've been talking about recently is Birmingham have won it, but then it's Wrexham-Wickham, Wrexham-Wickham, Wrexham-Wickham, Wrexham-Wickham-Wickham.
00:04:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
And that's how it's been for 20 weeks, until the emergence of the dark horse that is Charlton Athletic, who have come from nowhere and are now only four points behind Wrexham and only two points behind Wickham.
00:04:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
So Wrexham are in second, two points ahead of Wickham, and then it's Charlton. But here's here's the kicker.
00:04:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
Charlton beat Wickham 4-0 at Wickham at the weekend. Absolutely destroyed them. One of the best performances I've seen in cha end in League One for quite some time.
00:05:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
Problem is, who have Wrexham got on Saturday? Charlton. So Wrexham unbeateen and and haven't lost in six against Charlton, who have won five out of the six, who are absolutely on fire.
00:05:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
So the horrible scenario is, I think Wickham aren't going to get up there now because they've got two very hard games to come. they are ah They're away at Laney Orange, who are in six, who have won the last four games.
00:05:38
Nick Britten
Yeah, they're on form. Yeah, Oriental on
00:05:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, they're good team. Stockport, ah last game the season at home, Stockport at the fifth. ah I just don't think they're going win either of those games, actually. But Charlton beat us at the weekend at Wrexham, suddenly Charlton are one point behind us.
00:05:48
Nick Britten
Yeah.
00:05:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then we're away at Lincoln. Can't see that. We can't see us getting more than a point there. Charlton have got Burton Albion, who are either safe or relegated. ah By the last day.
00:06:05
Nick Britten
yeah
00:06:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
So I've got a horrible, horrible feeling that Charlton are going to come on the rails where the two front runners are are looking at each other, trying to get ahead, and there there comes the Charlton steam train down the rails to pimp us in the end.
00:06:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
i mean, I can see

Premier League Survival: Leeds and Burnley's Prospects

00:06:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
it happening.
00:06:25
Nick Britten
Other than Birmingham City, it has only been Wickham and Wrexham for a long time. ah For a long, long time.
00:06:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
Amazing.
00:06:30
Nick Britten
it's been It's been those three with Birmingham being way ahead most the time. Do you know what my dream scenario is, Ken?
00:06:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
Don't.
00:06:36
Nick Britten
know what dream is, Ken?
00:06:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
What? well
00:06:38
Nick Britten
My dream scenario is on the last day the season with Charlton one point behind you, they beat Burton Albion. And then it's nil-nil between Wrexham and Lincoln until the 90th minute when substitute and on loan Derby County striker James Collins...
00:06:53
Nick Britten
Comes onto the pitch, as he did at Reading last week. He came onto the pitch and scored within 10 seconds and ah to to give Lincoln the win. He comes on with 10 seconds to go.
00:07:05
Nick Britten
Heads in a goal.
00:07:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
And their own Well, strange things have happened.
00:07:08
Nick Britten
No, no, no, no, no. A real goal, ah which sees Charlton promoted. Wreckson put in the playoffs, and it's all thanks to a Derby County strike.
00:07:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
There's a lot strange things going on in that league at the moment. Anyway, ah talking about the championship and hurrah and congratulations and all those things to Leeds and Burnley because they've been promoted from the championship.
00:07:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
First question in everybody's lips. We talked about it a couple of weeks ago. Are there any chance of staying in the Premier League?
00:07:41
Nick Britten
not as things stand because they are neither of them are ah particularly good sides. Look, they've done very well this season, but they've done very well in arguably the poorest championship season four or championship league for quite some time.
00:07:54
Nick Britten
And I think that's yeah notable by...
00:07:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
agree with that.
00:07:57
Nick Britten
by the amount of teams beating each other ah in terms of top teams being being beaten by bottom teams. I referred to it just a few moments ago. Anybody can beat anybody in this league. But fair play to them. They both sit on 94 points with two games to go.
00:08:10
Nick Britten
So they could both actually reach 100 points, which is amazing.
00:08:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:08:13
Nick Britten
And on the face of it, looks incredible. But as we've seen in the last couple of years particularly, the gap but between the Championship and the Premier League is huge.
00:08:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:08:25
Nick Britten
It is huge. I mean, look at what's happened to Southampton, who went up last season. and and And a lot of people, myself included, thought of the three teams who are going up, Southampton actually play the better football and have got a chance.
00:08:37
Nick Britten
And look at them. They've been relegated and they've got the joint worst record in football history, Premier League history anyway. As things stand, they've still got a couple of games to, or a few games to go before to try and get another point ah to to get over that 11 point mark. But
00:08:52
Nick Britten
I don't think Leeds are that good. I don't think, I mean, Burnley have been, they be they've been, let's be honest, really, really, really pleased for Scott Parker because I like him.
00:09:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, everyone likes him.
00:09:02
Nick Britten
but My goodness, they have bored their way to success. 11-0-0 draws.
00:09:08
Nick Britten
this season. ah They have been, they have just been the the the draw specialists, the ball specialists, winning games by a very narrow margin. They've scored 61 goals, which is 28 less than Leeds.
00:09:19
Nick Britten
Leeds have scored 28 more goals this season.
00:09:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, they just don't score goals.
00:09:21
Nick Britten
um
00:09:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
They don't succeed.
00:09:22
Nick Britten
And yet, amazingly, amazingly, well, they've scored, they've scored in 44 games.
00:09:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
They don't succeed.
00:09:27
Nick Britten
they've they've They've let in 15 goals.
00:09:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
Astonishing now.
00:09:31
Nick Britten
I mean, 15 goals conceded in 44 Championship League games.
00:09:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, that's remarkable. What that cries out to me is is they've got no chance to stay in the Premier League because they just won't score enough goals.
00:09:43
Nick Britten
Well, there's two things, really. one One, they won't score enough goals. And secondly, it's very likely their goalkeeper, who's been their absolute bedrock upon which everything is built, is going to go to Newcastle.
00:09:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's great kid. Yeah.
00:09:53
Nick Britten
He's going to go to Newcastle. So they've been after him for ages. And this summer... Nick Pope hasn't really been that...
00:10:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
hasn't worked out.
00:10:00
Nick Britten
No, not really. He hasn't been as good as as people expected, I think. And James Trafford, the Burnley goalkeeper, I think is very much now in the sights of Newcastle United.
00:10:09
Nick Britten
So he's really, really good keeper. Really good. So Burnley, I think, will struggle. They won't score enough goals. Their defence is going to have to be reshapen if they lose their goalkeeper.
00:10:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's a hot property.

Financial Strategies for Premier League Success

00:10:21
Nick Britten
and and And likewise, Leeds and whoever goes up with them is going to be even harder. So I, unless, look, the only way to do it, the only way to do it is to spend big, unfortunately. And I hate saying that because it kind of goes against every principle.
00:10:36
Nick Britten
But look at what Nottingham Forest have done.
00:10:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, we adopted that at Wrexham and we we believe in that.
00:10:40
Nick Britten
Well, that's what you do. And that's why nobody likes you.
00:10:44
Nick Britten
Nottingham Forest did it a couple of years ago.
00:10:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, look at men.
00:10:46
Nick Britten
i spent two hundred They spent £200 million pounds in the first season, just about stayed up, spent another £200 million and now look at them.
00:10:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
now Yeah, absolutely.
00:10:52
Nick Britten
Third in the league and doing brilliantly. So the that's the only way to do it, I'm afraid, in that is is to chuck money at it because championship play is very, very hard.
00:11:03
Nick Britten
Ipswich romped the league last year. They're going to get relegated this year.
00:11:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, they are.
00:11:08
Nick Britten
you know so I mean, I say they romped the league. they were probably the best team in the league, even though they finished second. Leicester finished top. ah But I actually think Ipswich were the better footballing side out of the
00:11:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, there's surely a better footballer side than Leicester at the moment. so But it just raised a question. I was looking at the teams who were coming up with them, and it looks like it's pretty settled now. ah Sheffield United,

Playoff Teams and Promotion Hopes

00:11:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
Sunderland, Bristol City and Coventry in the yeah in the playoffs. Yeah.
00:11:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
All of them in terrible form. So Sheffield United have won two out of six. Sunderland have lost the last three. Bristol City have won three out of six. Half decent. Probably the form team.
00:11:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
Coventry have won two out of six. it chokes It speaks again to the the the competitiveness of the championship. But the teams in third to sixth, every team lost on Easter Monday. Just like we said, every team in the bottom seven won.
00:12:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
Every team in the top six, or certainly in three to six, lost. So none of those teams really inspire confidence. But you've got to pick one, Nick, who are going to go up with Leeds and Burnley. Who's going up with them?
00:12:17
Nick Britten
Well, the surprise package of those four is is undoubtedly Bristol City.
00:12:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
yes
00:12:20
Nick Britten
And out of them, they're probably the form team. they They have been a real, nobody expects them to really be where they are. Coventry, likewise. i mean, look, when Frank Lampard took over, they were nowhere.
00:12:31
Nick Britten
And they've had a really good run under Frank. And they've got a good front line. you you you would expect them to score goals. Sheffield United, you know can they recover? What's been what's been a massive collapse at the end of the season?
00:12:43
Nick Britten
It's not long ago they were top of the table and looked like they were going to storm it. There's been a massive collapse by Sheffield United.
00:12:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's a popular manager, Wilder, isn't he? Not.
00:12:50
Nick Britten
Absolutely not, no. no and And actually, for that reason alone, I hope they don't do it.
00:12:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:12:54
Nick Britten
but Literally for that reason alone. i'd like to see I'd like to see Sunderland back up there.
00:12:59
Nick Britten
they've got a really They've got a young, vibrant, energetic squad, but you wonder whether they've just run out of legs. And also, you and I both know, Ken, at this stage of the season, experience counts for everything. And they don't have the experience. It really doesn't. When you go to playoffs, playoff games are unbelievably
00:12:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah

Promotions and Partnerships

00:13:15
Nick Britten
tense and very, very difficult to maneuver your way around.
00:13:19
Nick Britten
So it may be, listen, it may be Bristol City as a surprise package, the team with momentum or or Coventry. And they're the two teams have come in into the fray quite late and they've come into the playoffs on on a broadly on a decent run of form over the last 10, 15 games.
00:13:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yep, think that's right. It's a poor quality it's a poor quality ah competition ah to go up in third place. I don't think any of them are going to trouble anybody in the Premier League. But that's for another day.
00:13:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
Now, ah quick mention about Zencastr, because here at Global Sports Podcast Network. Of course, I didn't say that Saturday feeling. It's all part of Global Sports Podcast Network.
00:14:00

00:14:07

You mucked up the intro well and truly.
00:14:08

I did, didn't I? But you know what I mean. ah so But here at Global Sports Podcast Network, we spend a lot of time, or we did spend a lot of time, selecting our delivery partner. And our delivery platform we use is Zencast.
00:14:20

00:14:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's super easy to start a podcast that sounds great and is efficiently delivered. So when you're ready to tell your story, you're ready tell your story, Nick.
00:14:43
Nick Britten
Always ready to tell my story, my friend.
00:14:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Excellent. Check out the link in the show notes then and learn more about Zencastr. So I heard a weird rumour earlier, and it's not about you, Nick. it's ah It's about Daniel Farker.
00:14:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
I read that there is a rumour that as soon as the season's over, Farker is going to get sacked from Leeds. The reason being, although he got them up as champions, probably, the general view is he's not a Premier League manager.
00:15:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's a very harsh perspective, if it's true. It might just be, you know, hearsay. But if it's true, is there a case for a club taking an absolutely harsh, cold business decision and saying, thanks for getting us where we you've got us.
00:15:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
See ya. We need someone else in the Premier League.
00:15:38
Nick Britten
I think it's becoming much more than just a rumor you've read on the internet. there's a lot of There's a lot of chatter about this now. And if it was completely utter untrue, it would have been shut down. It's not been shut down. There's a growing sense that it's going to happen.
00:15:50
Nick Britten
And um it doesn't surprise me. His record in the Premier League is six wins out of 49 games. It's abysmal. And Leeds are a club that are now owned by 49ers Group.
00:16:02
Nick Britten
They're a massive massive club. They're a big industry. They've got high hopes for Leeds United.
00:16:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm.
00:16:07
Nick Britten
And they won't want to see them come straight back down again. They'll want to see them progress. They're very, very ambitious. And this will be cold-hearted business decision. Do you know what? It doesn't surprise me.
00:16:21
Nick Britten
And I think there is a case to say this should happen more often.
00:16:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
who
00:16:25
Nick Britten
I wonder if leadeds i wonder if Leeds have had a look also at what's happened in this year's Premier League. Southampton kept faith with Russell Martin. They're getting relegated.
00:16:36
Nick Britten
Ipswich Town kept faith with Kieran McKenna. they've got They're getting relegated. Leicester, who are the other team who have gone straight up and and are coming straight back down again, slightly different because Enzo Maresca left his own accord and went to Chelsea.
00:16:48
Nick Britten
But they employed Steve Cooper, who had previously taken Nottingham Forest up, had just about got them to just survive, but got sacked nonetheless.
00:16:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
Should have kept him.
00:16:59
Nick Britten
And, and ah well well, can you argue against Nuno Espirito Santo taking them to third?
00:17:05
Nick Britten
Would Steve Cooper? No, you can't.
00:17:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
No.
00:17:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
no
00:17:07
Nick Britten
You can't. I mean, it was a very harsh decision at the time. There was a lot of head scratching. There was quite a lot of anger amongst Nottingham Forest fans. The reality is, look at the mail.
00:17:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh, no, I'm not talking about Forrest should have kept him. I'm talking about Leicester should have kept him rather than rather and they they get
00:17:19
Nick Britten
ah I think, ah look, it it might not have been enough, but I think they would have had a better chance of of survival under under Steve Cooper. Yeah, I think that was a harsh decision. And ultimately, it's been proven to be the wrong decision.
00:17:31
Nick Britten
So I wonder if Leeds have looked at that and they know and they can see managing and managing in the Premier League is very, very different to managing in the Championship. Everything is different. The skill set is different. what the The spotlight is different.
00:17:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
yep
00:17:43
Nick Britten
The profile is different. The money is different. Everything about it is different. And there is a reason why there are only, but two, I think, two maybe managers of Premier League teams who have what I would call done well, i.e. survived. And I'm thinking of Nuno, who did very well in Wolves and took them up from the Championship. But he but yeah since then, he's been at Tottenham and elsewhere, and he's now at Forest.
00:18:05
Nick Britten
ah Eddie Howe, who obviously did it with Bournemouth and did a great job, and he's doing a brilliant job at Newcastle. beyond that Beyond that, when you look down the Premier League table,
00:18:17
Nick Britten
There aren't managers who manage in the championship because it's it's very, very difficult. And Leeds and the 49ers, they're not in this for the fun. They want to build Leeds.
00:18:30
Nick Britten
Anybody who remembers Leeds in the 90s when they were competing in Europe and at the top end of the Premier League, that's why they want to get them back. They've got the capability. They've got the finances behind them. They've got the support behind them, undoubtedly.
00:18:41
Nick Britten
Leeds United could be a very, very big club, but what they don't want to do is take the risk of them coming straight back down. And unfortunately, Daniel Farker's record, whatever he's done this season, his record in the Premier League, would suggest that is the direction travel they're going to take.
00:18:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think that's the case. It'll be very interesting to see. one of the things, when I was thinking about this item, when it was the last time ah Premier League club hired a championship manager from the championship?
00:19:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
You know, someone who been was doing really well in the championship and someone at the Premier League level said, let's give him a chance. I can't remember that happening. It must be years ago.
00:19:21
Nick Britten
That's a great question. um That's a great question. I'm going to have a think about that in the time that we've got left because there will be one, but I can't think what it would be. I'm looking i'm looking down the table now and I'm um i'm thinking...
00:19:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
None of the current ones are that. um And, you know, is there but it's sad, really, that a Premier League club, if someone is doing a brilliant job in the Championship, a Premier League club doesn't say, hey, there's a manager of for the future. Let's get him into the Premier League.
00:19:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
The stakes are too high. They don't do it anymore.
00:19:50
Nick Britten
there was a lot of There was a lot of talk about Kieran McKenna going to Brighton, and he was actually living the Man United job, but that was what after he got Ipswich promoted.
00:19:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:19:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yep. I'm talking about before people get promoted, just on their skills as managers.
00:19:59
Nick Britten
So was after he got Ipswich promoted.
00:20:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
just doesn't happen anymore.
00:20:06
Nick Britten
It doesn't happen anymore, and and you could argue with good reason, because if you're a manager that can't get a team out of the Championship, what chance have you got of surviving in the Premier League?
00:20:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yep, I get it. ah I see it. But it it used to happen, and it doesn't happen anymore. It's just...
00:20:23
Nick Britten
ah Well, I'll tell you what. now I'll tell you what I'll tell you what. Here you go. Frank Lampard. There you go. I knew there was one. Frank Lampard managed at Derby and got poached by Chelsea.
00:20:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
There you go. There you go.
00:20:31
Nick Britten
It was slightly different starly different circumstances. But yeah, he was manager at Derby. Took them into the playoffs. Lost. ah We're going back, what, two thousand and eighteen nineteen Lost to Aston Villa in the playoff final. Villa went up. We stayed down. And Frank left to go to Chelsea.
00:20:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
There you go. We've nailed it.
00:20:46
Nick Britten
There you
00:20:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well done, Nick.
00:20:47
Nick Britten

00:20:50

00:21:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I... By the way, I should say to you I went...
00:21:29

yeah The counter would be absolutely rammed if every product was on the counter. You'd walk into the shop.
00:21:33
Global Sports Podcast Network

00:21:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I said to the lady ah on the counter, do you sell Viagra? She says, we do. Let's just come, can I get it over the counter? And she says, well, you need to take two for that.

If you're going to start with your rubbish jokes, I'll find some tumbleweed for next week.
00:22:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Right, here we go. So you keep nagging. Oh, my word, Leslie. You can't believe it He's nagging the time. Oh, certain rules, you've got to change these rules've got to change these rules. here really They really you know just goes on and on and on.
00:22:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
But here's the opportunity, Nick. Tell us what rules you want to change in football because I know you've got a couple.
00:23:04
Nick Britten
This is a

Rule Changes in Football: Innovations and Critiques

00:23:05
Nick Britten
ah fairly irregular-ish kind of feature. where um And it ought to be more regular, but we might run out of rules. Look, football's a great game, but it's still still suffering from the fact the rules were written in 1884.
00:23:16
Nick Britten
And quite a lot of them haven't changed. And one of the rules that has changed quite a lot... ah down the years. It generally involves goalkeepers. And we we all remember times where goalkeepers could handle a back pass and that all got ruled out.
00:23:32
Nick Britten
It was after one of the World Cups, wasn't it? Where where teams were just playing back, just kicking, they're just wasting time.
00:23:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
i think that I think it was that West Germany-Austria game.
00:23:41
Nick Britten
think it was exactly that. I think that's that's exactly what it was.
00:23:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
Notorious game.
00:23:45
Nick Britten
And and So obviously that rule that rule changed and we've had various rule changes ah down the years and involving goalkeepers. so I am going to propose another rule change involving goalkeepers because I'll tell you what's been happening quite a lot in the championship this season.
00:23:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Here we go.
00:24:02
Nick Britten
And obviously I watch championship football every week. I've got season ticket. And there's been ah kind of tactical timeout happening this season where on about 25 minutes or so,
00:24:14
Nick Britten
The goalkeeper, normally whilst the ball's right up the other end, just sits down and starts kind of holding his knee or rubbing his leg or something like that. And what happens is all the players alert the referee to it. The referee says, oh, goalie's injured.
00:24:29
Nick Britten
The trainer comes on. And when the trainer comes on, both sets of players sprint over to the dugouts and have a team meeting.
00:24:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's a time out then.
00:24:37
Nick Britten
Yeah, it is a timeout. It's a tactical timeout caused by a goalkeeper who is not injured.
00:24:43
Nick Britten
and then And then the then the game starts. ah Last week, and this is I've been thinking about this for a while, but it kind of really came to the front of my mind last week when I was watching Derby and Luton. um Every few minutes, the Luton goalkeeper just went down.
00:24:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
00:24:57
Nick Britten
for no reason whatsoever. Literally, there might have been a slight bit contact. He might have actually kicked the ball, god God forbid, and hurt his leg doing so. ah just sort of went down. And the trainers came on and everywhere all the players went over and had a drink and had a chat.
00:25:09
Nick Britten
And the game resumed. Now, under the rules of association football, when a when an outfield player goes down and a trainer comes off, they then have to leave the pitch for a period of 30 seconds.
00:25:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
See where you're going here.
00:25:22
Nick Britten
okay You know where I'm going with this now, don't you? um That doesn't apply for goalkeepers because goalkeepers get a special dispensation from quite a lot of the rules because they are in a unique position. and And, you know, that's fair enough.
00:25:34
Nick Britten
However, I propose propose a rule change to stop this shenanigans, to stop this nonsense time-wasting, to stop these deliberate time-outs now where goalkeepers use as a tactic...
00:25:47
Nick Britten
Goalkeepers should be duty-bound to be included in the rule whereby if they go down injured and the trainer comes on, they have to leave the pitch just like any outfield player.
00:25:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Wow, that would stop it instantly.
00:25:57
Nick Britten
um Unless, yeah, unless, and there there has to be one caveat here. And the only caveat will be, ah unless they are facing a direct shot on goal. So it's a corner or a free kick or something like that.
00:26:09
Nick Britten
That would be unfair.
00:26:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah. yeah
00:26:10
Nick Britten
But if the play is in a neutral area, get him off the pitch, stop him time-wasting, and it'll make the game bit more exciting because everybody shoots from everywhere.
00:26:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
Even if they're genuinely injured.
00:26:23
Nick Britten
Yeah, why not? it married Listen, when a goalkeeper is genuinely injured, literally when...
00:26:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
look pouring off his face and you're saying no no go and stand by the corner flag for a week
00:26:29
Nick Britten
Well, yeah...
00:26:33
Nick Britten
But i no nothing ah wait a week, maybe too much. I was thinking 30 seconds.
00:26:38
Nick Britten
ah Well, look, when do you... write not yeah Count of times. What is the percentage? I need somebody to find me. If you're listening out there and you know this or you can find it out.
00:26:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
fair enough god you've been harsh today haven't you all the way through this
00:26:48
Nick Britten
What is the percentage of the amount of times goalkeepers go down injured in quote marks and they are actually injured? Like properly injured, so they require actually require the trainer.
00:27:00
Nick Britten
Not they go down and have the trainer on.
00:27:02
Nick Britten
They're properly injured. It's minuscule.
00:27:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
It is.
00:27:05
Nick Britten
It is minuscule.
00:27:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
i I agree with you.
00:27:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
We need to do something about it because at the moment, maybe the thing to do about it is to allow tactical timeouts. Happens in many other sports. You know, is that yeah is there a 22 and a half minute tactical timeout? Why not?
00:27:20
Nick Britten
Or have one, or have, you know, one, one per, one per team per half or something like that.
00:27:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. Yeah. Managing can call a timeout.
00:27:25
Nick Britten
ah there' what Yeah.
00:27:26
Nick Britten
Yeah. vol In volleyball.
00:27:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
Timeout.
00:27:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Timeout, Nick.
00:27:28
Nick Britten
Yeah.
00:27:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
Timeout.
00:27:28
Nick Britten
That's it. Are we having a time?
00:27:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
Timeout.
00:27:31
Nick Britten
Are we having a timeout now?
00:27:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, no, no, we're not having time.
00:27:33
Nick Britten
Oh, okay. Um, yeah, they do volleyball, tactical timeout and and each coach gets three, I think. And, uh, so yeah, why not? Something like that. But this has got to stop. This goalkeeper thing's got to stop. So that's my proposed rule change.
00:27:44
Nick Britten
I've got another one for next week, by the way.
00:27:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
Okay, I've got a quick one, by the way, which when when we started talking about this, i was just alerted to the ridiculousness of this.
00:27:46
Nick Britten
Uh,
00:27:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
And it might... Tell me if I'm barking up the wrong tree here, Nick.
00:27:59
Nick Britten
You're barking up the wrong tree, Ken.
00:28:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thanks for clearing that one up. Okay, we can work. No, it's it's not. It's about throw-ins. Aren't throw-ins a ridiculous invention when you think about it? might Who? when they were We talked about when they were inventing the rules in 1842 or whatever.
00:28:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
And someone would have said, what happens if it goes out behind the goal kick, ah behind the goal line? What's a goal kick? It's goal kick. You just kick it back in play. oh yeah Okay, great. What about if it goes out on the sidelines?
00:28:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah know we use our hands for that. What? It's football. No, no, no, no. it would It'd be great. Honestly, if it goes out of the side bit, we'll be throwing it in.
00:28:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, okay.
00:28:42
Nick Britten
Yeah.
00:28:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
Why not? ah Yeah, but you can't just throw it in. Like with just one hand, we throw it in. No, no, no, no, no. You've got to have two hands, and you've got to release it before the ball goes over the kind of crown of your head, like loopy.
00:28:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
And they all sat around that that table and said, yeah, okay, let's give it a try. and it's still And it's still there now. Now, you're a ref. You're a ref.
00:29:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
The rules...
00:29:10
Nick Britten
and I am. I think you should have your pipe out for this little segment. to it's got It's got Ken's pipe. Yeah, it is that.
00:29:17
Nick Britten
it's cool and look You look like one of the guys who in the 1800s was thinking up this rule right here, right now.
00:29:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
the rule
00:29:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
I wouldn't have thought it. It's ridiculous. Why don't they... The the rules around foul throws are stupid. If we want to throw it in, if we really want to use our hands to throw it in, I don't know why. don't we just kick it in?
00:29:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah Why don't we allow it to be one hand? And you can literally propel it 70 yards.
00:29:42
Nick Britten
Well, I think that's probably the point why they use two hands, because it's just a bit of an unfair advantage. But then I suppose if what you're arguing is that you put your pipe down, down ah if what you're arguing is so is the alternative being kick it in, well, you can kick it the same length that you can throw it.
00:30:00
Nick Britten
It's a really interesting one. I'm going to find this out.
00:30:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thanks, mate.
00:30:03
Nick Britten
um good I know, to be fair, it's not often you come up with something that stumps me. um But what is the history of it? Why is it throwing and not kicking?
00:30:10
Nick Britten
There will be reason for that.
00:30:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Stupid, isn't it?
00:30:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
You wouldn't find it in any other... Imagine going to play hockey and it goes out and they say, no, you can't use your stick, mate.
00:30:14
Nick Britten
Yeah.
00:30:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
You've got to kick it in.
00:30:18
Nick Britten
You just use your elbow.
00:30:19
Nick Britten
you got to elbow it in, yeah. and go Yeah, yeah.
00:30:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
<unk> got a kick to Yeah, you've got to nose it in.
00:30:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, it's ridiculous.

Predictions Competition: Nick vs Ken

00:30:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
So anyway, so that's my thing on on throw-ins and it's just something I want to get off my chest, really.
00:30:30
Nick Britten
Well, i said no, I think you're quite right. And and interestingly, my my other rule a proposed rule change involves throw-ins.
00:30:36
Nick Britten
and And if it gets accepted, then your wish will be granted.
00:30:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
Ooh.
00:30:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm.
00:30:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Ooh. Looking forward to that. We're keeping that for next week. We should have a completely rule, a kind of a rules meeting. One of these things. and We just changed all the rules of football.
00:30:50
Nick Britten
Yeah, that's a very good idea.
00:30:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
Right. So predictions, predictions, predictions, I mean, we talked about Derby and Luton. We talked about Wrexham and Wickham.
00:30:58
Nick Britten
Yeah.
00:31:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
Nothing is tight. Nothing is as competitive as Nick Britton against Ken Davis in the prediction league this year.
00:31:06
Nick Britten
Oh, no.
00:31:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
70 plays, 72. ah We've got...
00:31:10
Nick Britten
am I still winning?
00:31:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
You're still winning by three.
00:31:12
Nick Britten
Oh, get in. Because I didn't know how how bad a week I might have last week.
00:31:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
It was...
00:31:15
Nick Britten
Because I can never remember what I say and I remember what you say.
00:31:18
Nick Britten
And I'm always convinced that you you give yourself an extra two points here and there.
00:31:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, it was...
00:31:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
but I use to my advantage quite regularly. So we've got seven games. No, we've got nine games. you got seven in the Premier League, got two in the FA Cup. So i'm going to whistle through them quickly.
00:31:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'll go first. Chelsea against Everton is a draw. Nick?
00:31:37
Nick Britten
Is this at Stamford Bridge?
00:31:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:31:40
Nick Britten
um I'm going to go... ah Yeah, draw. true
00:31:46
Nick Britten
um It could be...
00:31:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
Don't you be doing this to me.
00:31:48
Nick Britten
no no No, I don't mean to. I don't mean to ah was actually thinking about maybe Everton could win it. I mean, they a good away win at Forest the other day. And they're on really good form. Chelsea's season is just folding. But bizarrely, they're still kind of in the European places. They've still got someone to play for.
00:31:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's a two ahead.
00:32:02
Nick Britten
ah Yeah, okay, yeah, yeah. ah Draw, yeah.
00:32:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah I agree a draw okay you can go first on this one Brighton against West they've been poor all season they've been in a lot of trouble this year shocking
00:32:07
Nick Britten
Yeah.
00:32:10
Nick Britten
God, too poor size. The Graham Potter dream at West Ham is turning very sour. They really have. I mean, they they even allowed Southam to take a point off them last week.
00:32:21
Nick Britten
ah to Yeah, i brighton Brighton's season has fallen away as well, to be honest. It's fair, but I think I'll go home advantage here and home win.
00:32:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm afraid I have to go the same. Newcastle against Ipswich, even worth putting down. Though Ipswich, Ipswich.
00:32:35
Nick Britten
Well, well, well, well.
00:32:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
And Newcastle got battered, didn't they, against Villa?
00:32:40
Nick Britten
Newcastle got taken apart second part second half by Villa.
00:32:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
They did. thought Villa were very impressive.
00:32:44
Nick Britten
I mean, Villa absolutely ripped them to pieces. They were really good. Yeah, I thought Villa were great. No, it's all over for Ipswich.
00:32:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:32:52
Nick Britten
Newcastle have got far too much to play for still.
00:32:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:32:54
Nick Britten
Home win.
00:32:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. Here's an interesting one. Southampton against Fulham. You can go first on this one.
00:33:01
Nick Britten
Yeah. um
00:33:06
Nick Britten
Right. So, Hampton have been relegated. Now, that that can sometimes mean that... That can sometimes mean they play with a bit more freedom. It can sometimes mean that they they they take the shackles off. Equally, they're also pretty rubbish.
00:33:23
Nick Britten
Fulham... I mean, they drew they deserved a draw against Chelsea of the other day. I think they played pretty well. It's a difficult one. I think... I think I'll still go Fulham.
00:33:34
Nick Britten
I think I'll still go Fulham. I mean, they are just sort of ending up in mid-table now. and yeah Yeah, I think so. Away win.
00:33:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
I've got a draw. Right.
00:33:44
Nick Britten
Yeah, that's fair enough, yeah.
00:33:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
Wolves v Leicester. Home win. Nick?
00:33:49
Nick Britten
Yeah, let's not even bother talking about it.
00:33:51
Nick Britten
Home win.
00:33:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
Fair enough.
00:33:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'll put you down for home win. Bournemouth against Man United. You can go on that first on that one, Nick.
00:33:58
Nick Britten
Yeah.
00:34:02
Nick Britten
Yeah, yeah. Well, Bournemouth, I mean, look, Bournemouth season's over. United season's over. Bournemouth now can't, I mean, look, yes, technically and mathematically they could get into Europe, but they are a long way behind Villa in seventh and Chelsea in sixth.
00:34:18
Nick Britten
Yeah, eight points eight points is a big gap to make up at this stage of the season.
00:34:24
Nick Britten
Man United are just totally and utterly unpredictable. i don't know. no idea how this game will go, so I'll go draw.
00:34:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
Draw, interesting. I'm going home win. ah Liverpool against Spurs, again, is that a formality?
00:34:40
Nick Britten
Yes.
00:34:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
Spurs away win for either?
00:34:42
Nick Britten
liverpool need Liverpool need a point so to to win the title.
00:34:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, home win for both.
00:34:47
Nick Britten
I think that's going to be like a 4-0.
00:34:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
Right, I just thought of a really interesting twist on this game, which you're going to apply at the end. you'll be You don't even know about this. I've only just thought about it two seconds ago, but you'll like it. Right, FA Cup, two games in the f FA Cup, 90-minute rule applies, as always.
00:35:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Palace against Villa.
00:35:09
Nick Britten
ah Well, my heart says Palace, obviously.
00:35:13
Nick Britten
I've got you know a great great emotional link to the club. and My head says Villa. I think they're on really, really good form. And the way they took Newcastle apart last week, I thought was amazing.
00:35:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yep.
00:35:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
Impressive.
00:35:24
Nick Britten
ah thought they played I thought they played well against Man City and were unlucky to lose in the dying seconds there.
00:35:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:35:31
Nick Britten
So Palace of Palace, they ah you know they're coming on strong. they played ah by the way, i don't know if you saw this last night. They played really well against Arsenal.
00:35:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:35:40
Nick Britten
And I mean really well.
00:35:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
They did great to come back in that game twice.
00:35:44
Nick Britten
Yeah, so um it's going to be tight. It should be a really good game. I'm really looking forward to it.
00:35:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. Yeah, true attacking teams.
00:35:50
Nick Britten
I think it'll be the... Yeah, I think Villa i think viilla will have the edge.
00:35:55
Nick Britten
as much as i't As much as I don't like to say it, I'm going Villa.
00:35:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Okay, so you're going...
00:35:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
Okay, I'm going draw 90 minutes. Forest against Man City, another real tight one.
00:36:04
Nick Britten
Yeah, again, ah this could be a cracking game. This really could be a cracking game. i'm looking forward to this.
00:36:12
Nick Britten
I'm going to go Man City because I just don't want Forrest to win.
00:36:17
Nick Britten
It's as simple as that.
00:36:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's not really a very street way of going about it, but fair enough.
00:36:21
Nick Britten
Hey, it's as scientific as the rest of it, quite frankly.
00:36:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
Fair enough. And I'm going to go for a draw 90 minutes there. Now, here's the twist.
00:36:30
Nick Britten
You're just sitting on a fence, aren't you? Blimey.
00:36:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, no, no. These are well-reasoned predictions. Here's the twist, Nick. You can change one of mine and I can change one of yours. That's a great twist, isn't it?
00:36:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
We're going to do that for the rest of the season. You can change one of mine. Which one do you want to change?
00:36:47
Nick Britten
Okay. i'm going to change ah I'm going to change Wolves versus Leicester to an away win.
00:36:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
And we can't, the other rule is we can't change the same game. So I've now got Leicester to win at Wolves. Well, therefore, you're having Ipswich.
00:37:03
Nick Britten
Yep.
00:37:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, you're having, oh, I'm attempting to Forest to win. No, I'm having, you can have Spurs to win away at Liverpool.
00:37:19
Nick Britten
Okay.
00:37:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
Isn't that a great, this that's a great twist, isn't it?
00:37:22
Nick Britten
That is a great twist. And do you know what? If your change of my prediction is right and Spurs win at Liverpool, it'll be really funny.
00:37:30
Nick Britten
It will be really funny.
00:37:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, I'll never do it again.
00:37:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
Right. So brilliant.

00:37:55
Nick Britten
