Nick Britten
I'm not going to talk to you later. I'm not going to talk to you later. not going to talk to you later. I'm not going to talk to you later.

Global Sports Podcast Network
It's Nick Britton. How are we doing, Nick?
00:00:33
Nick Britten
I was waiting. I was waiting to see what was coming to come out there.
00:00:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello.
00:00:38
Nick Britten
That's better than last week. So I'm pleased to be here. It's very nice to see you as always, Ken.
00:00:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
Did you see that miss, Nick?
00:00:44
Nick Britten
It was horrendous. It was horrendous. It immediately reminded Rosenthal's miss back in the day where he just ballooned it over the bar.
00:00:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh.
00:00:54
Nick Britten
over it was It was dreadful. It's cost Liverpool two points. He should have scored. He was an absolute sitter.

Episode Preview: Worst Forwards & New Rules

00:01:00
Nick Britten
and But it's given us some good food for thought for today, hasn't it?
00:01:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
It certainly has, because we're going to be talking about three things today in this episode.
00:01:04
Nick Britten
You said, man, I just want
00:01:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
We're going to talk about who is the dodgiest, the worst, the most inept, is the nice word, forward that's ever graced the pitch in the English Premier League.
00:01:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's number one. Secondly, something that me and Nick have been thinking about for a very long period of time, which is...
00:01:21
Nick Britten
ah
00:01:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
rules you would change in football.
00:01:29
Nick Britten
but
00:01:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I'm not talking about minor things here.
00:01:30
Nick Britten
well
00:01:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm talking about major structural changes to the rule book in football.
00:01:34
Nick Britten
the I'm sorry.
00:01:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
So we're going to talk about our ideas for that. And we've got a bumper set of fixtures coming up for the weekend and into next week. So we've got 20 20 fixtures to predict.
00:01:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
So that is what we're going to do today. But we start with one

Listener Correspondence: New Manager Bounce

00:01:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
thing. We've had some correspondence, Nick, that I just wanted to let you know.
00:01:54
Nick Britten
i
00:01:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
It was directed to you, Nick. It's from a Mr. P. Warne of 17 Railway Sidings Cockermouth. And it says, Dear Nick, love the show.
00:02:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
We often hear about a new manager bounce.
00:02:13
Nick Britten
i
00:02:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
But what happens when that doesn't happen? What could he be referring to?
00:02:19
Nick Britten
i I've no idea. I don't know what he could be referring to. i genuinely couldn't think. mean, he certainly would not have been referring to, as Paul is sitting in Cockermouth there, watching watching John Eustace take over his formal role last week.
00:02:35
Nick Britten
And in in his, absolutely in his first game, we saw that new manager bounce and went down to our heaviest defeat of the season, fourial to QPR. maybe that i don't Maybe that's what he's referring to.
00:02:47
Nick Britten
I don't know.
00:02:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
Might be. I don't think it's Paul Warren.
00:02:49
Nick Britten
It's nice to get the thing.
00:02:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
It might be Peter or Philip Warren. Peter Warren. Pierre Warren in Cockimuff.
00:02:54
Nick Britten
Oh, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know Pierre.
00:02:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
Might not be monday one we're talking about.
00:02:59
Nick Britten
I know Pierre Waller who lives in Cockybeth. That'll be him, yeah. That'll be him.
00:03:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I know you love it in Cockermouth.
00:03:03
Nick Britten
Nice man.
00:03:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
Right, okay. So we are we are now going to move... What? It's a place in Cumbria, Nick. It's an actual play it's natural play i've been to Cockermouth. And I know you have.
00:03:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
So, right, moving on.
00:03:15
Nick Britten
yeah, yeah, I know.

Discussion: Darwin Nunes' Performance

00:03:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
we So we all saw Darwin Nunes make an absolute fool of himself.
00:03:20
Nick Britten
speak So, you know, I'm sorry.
00:03:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
And it got us thinking, well, who are the dodgiest ones that we've seen in the Premier League as forward?
00:03:25
Nick Britten
I'm sorry.
00:03:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Now, we've not compared notes on this. We may have may have the same. But this...
00:03:31
Nick Britten
I don't think... there's a few rocks, there's been plenty of them. I've gone down a particular road on this, by the way, because what there have been been loads and loads and loads of really poor and rubbish strikers in the Premier League.
00:03:42
Nick Britten
But it's not um it's not really fair to pull out players who play for Blackpool Bolton or, dare I say, even Darby in their miserable stints in the Premier League, because they've got players that...
00:03:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
I agree.
00:03:52
Nick Britten
Well, I've gone down a road of big, high-profile players who play for the big clubs, who are expected to do it brilliantly and just failed catastrophically.
00:03:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
Right. I've taken a slightly different tack.
00:04:00
Nick Britten
Yeah. I think that's been center. It has been a center.
00:04:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
As you'd expect. but it's that But I have got some big players in there and one that isn't.
00:04:06
Nick Britten
think been a center.
00:04:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
But we will I think what we should do with this is go with our third choices, then our second choices and then our first choice.
00:04:09
Nick Britten
think it's been center. I think it's been center. think it's been center. I think it's been center.
00:04:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
And now I'm going to hand over to you.
00:04:15
Nick Britten
so he
00:04:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
So what is your what's your third choice of dodgy forward?
00:04:22
Nick Britten
so my my uh my third choice um here is a young man who was probably better equipped to be a model than he was a footballer uh the babyface sweden assassin or or the misfiring assassin thomas brolin arrived in the uk to a huge fanfare in november 1995 signed for leeds united
00:04:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh, yeah.
00:04:45
Nick Britten
for 4.5 million pounds amid ah lot of hype he came from palmer he'd won the european cup winners cup there in 1992 he got and helped sweden to the quarterfinals of the world cup absolutely and he was a great player and he was a great player there was a huge he was he announced himself for the world
00:04:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Who scored that goal against us, didn't he, in 92? scored the winning goal against England, didn't he, in 92, remember.
00:05:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
was being operative word.
00:05:10
Nick Britten
And was a very, very exciting move. But he came over to Leeds and it all went wrong very, very quickly. fell out with Howard Wilkinson, because Howard Wilkinson wanted him to defend. Surely not.
00:05:21
Nick Britten
And he wouldn't defend. And they all, they they sort of fell out. ah George Graham took over. He fell out with George Graham. And at one stage he refused to play. And... and The kind of the soap opera of him being at Leeds and falling out with managers and not playing and was he injured, was he not and all that far overshadowed his professional career there.
00:05:43
Nick Britten
He only managed 20 appearances in a couple of years. he only scored four goals and it was a complete and utter miserable flop. So, Thomas Brolin, you're my third biggest failure in the Premier League.
00:05:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't think anyone could disagree with that.
00:05:56
Nick Britten
I think it's been a big deal.
00:05:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
He obviously liked fish and chips. He liked the diet of Yorkshire, didn't he?
00:06:02
Nick Britten
Yeah, you
00:06:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
Because I remember him in Sweden. I remember when he scored that goal against England thinking this lad's a world beater. You could play for Rex in this lad. And then he came over and he seemed to put on a bit of timber, didn't he?
00:06:11
Nick Britten
did.
00:06:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
if And I'm being unfair, but but and and you know I'm obviously in no position to point the finger at anyone.
00:06:14
Nick Britten
Yeah, you did. No, you made great for that. No. No. as one
00:06:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
But it did look like he wasn't necessarily at the forefront of nutrition.
00:06:21
Nick Britten
no and like so
00:06:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Let's put it that way.
00:06:29
Nick Britten
But you're in no position to ever have been a footballer, so nobody's going to blame you for that. Yeah, it was exactly that. he went to Palace, actually. He had a spell at Palace. and It was equally terrible there. So, yeah, but i want to know who you've got in your three.
00:06:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, my third one is I was torn.
00:06:42
Nick Britten
um like that one. think it's a good one.
00:06:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
um was torn between I nearly went for Diego Forlan of Man United, nearly did.
00:06:46
Nick Britten
it's
00:06:48
Nick Britten
so know
00:06:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah but went in the end for ah Shevchenko, Andrei Shevchenko. ah Obviously, big money buy.
00:07:00
Nick Britten
ah yeah what you
00:07:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, you smile. Have you got Shevchenko on your list as well?
00:07:05
Nick Britten
and when you see some might
00:07:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
Right, I suppose I will.
00:07:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
But no, he was 31 million quid.
00:07:08
Nick Britten
i
00:07:11
Nick Britten
yes
00:07:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think it was 2006, 2007, he scored four goals.
00:07:13
Nick Britten
yeah traffic lost
00:07:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
2007 and 2008, he scored five goals. But obviously, this was Jose Mourinho's team. And no one ever had the impression that Shevchenko was there because Mourinho went into Roman Abranovic and said, you've got to get me Shevchenko.
00:07:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
you get the impression went the other way, where Abramovich went into Mourinho's office and said, I've got an idea.
00:07:36
Nick Britten
first
00:07:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Why don't we get... Shevchenko over from the Ukraine. And I'm sure Mourinho would have said, nah, nah, nah, nah. He's not going to fit you into the Premier League.
00:07:53
Nick Britten
but
00:07:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Too late, I've done it.
00:07:57
Nick Britten
of
00:07:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
I imagine it's that kind of conversation.
00:07:59
Nick Britten
you know
00:07:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
Anyway, I never got the impression Shevchenko was Mourinho's player.
00:08:00
Nick Britten
we
00:08:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
He was always Abramovich's player.
00:08:03
Nick Britten
but good
00:08:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
and it And it never worked out. What you reckon?
00:08:07
Nick Britten
Yeah, he was... No, I agree. I mean, at Milan, where Chelsea bought from, he was one of the best strikers in the world. mean, he scored 175 goals, 322 games.
00:08:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yep.
00:08:17
Nick Britten
He was a Ballon d'Or winner. He was sensational. But by the time he signed for Chelsea, he was about 30 years old. And his best years were quite clearly behind him. £31 million, move 2006.
00:08:29
Nick Britten
move in two thousand and six And as you've just said, what, nine goals in two years at Stamford Bridge. and The thing with Cecho is a sensational player, but he relied very, very heavily on his pace.
00:08:41
Nick Britten
That was his thing. And as soon as he kind of got to his late 20s, early 30s, his pace just just deserted him.
00:08:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
I found that myself.
00:08:48
Nick Britten
And he was never the same player, was he? He was never the same player. No.
00:08:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, I was never the same player after 13, it was for me.
00:08:52
Nick Britten
That was crazy.
00:08:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
But one of the things that is a recurring theme in this is the fact that players seem to do fantastically well outside the Premier League, often.
00:09:01
Nick Britten
don't know what that is. don't know what that is.
00:09:06
Nick Britten
don't know what that
00:09:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
They score a million goals in Holland or in Switzerland, they're absolute world beaters.
00:09:06
Nick Britten
I don't know what that I don't know what that is. don't what that is. I don't know what that
00:09:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
or even Italy, and they come to the Premier League and suddenly it doesn't work for them.
00:09:12
Nick Britten
I don't know what that is. I don't what that don't what that is.
00:09:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
Now, is that simply because the standard Premier League is so much higher than those other leagues? Or is there something about the game in the UK which kind of suit, or England, that suits certain players and really doesn't suit others?
00:09:22
Nick Britten
I don't know what is. don't know what that is. don't what that is. I don't know what that don't that don't what that on It's both, really, I think. It's that the the pace of the game is very different still.
00:09:34
Nick Britten
It's changed a bit in Europe, but the pace of the English game is still absolutely relentless. The number of games we play is is absolutely relentless. And I think when you're comparing us to countries like Switzerland or Norway or Sweden or Teamfight, you know, the league standard, not the international standard, but the league standard is much higher in England.
00:09:55
Nick Britten
So unless you're coming from... the Bundesliga or Serie A or the Liga, you're not, or even maybe PSG in the French versus, you're not going to be used to the standard of the Premier League.
00:10:08
Nick Britten
Because even the rubbish teams in the Premier League are good teams compared to, say, rubbish teams in some of the smaller European countries, top divisions who are truly terrible. so So, yeah, it's a bit of both.
00:10:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah That makes us... Well, we better whistle through this. So who have you got number two?
00:10:23
Nick Britten
Well, I've got number two. The player to whom Clyde Tilsley famously reported when he was doing his commentary, the joke of English football now needs a new punchline when he finally scored his first goal after nine months.
00:10:36
Nick Britten
And you've mentioned him before, actually, but my number two is Diego Fulham, who moved to Manchester United for £6.9 million January 2002.
00:10:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:10:44
Nick Britten
in january two thousand and two and A couple of years later when he left, 17 goals in 98 appearances. it was It was a disaster. He didn't score for eight months.
00:10:58
Nick Britten
When he did score, he went through little bit of o spell, but then didn't score again. And he became more famous for his hair than anything else. But a curious...
00:11:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
Great hair. he had one of those hairband things in, didn't he?
00:11:07
Nick Britten
Yeah, he wore a headband, yeah. Interestingly, though, he did become a bit of a cult hero with Manchester United supporters, who used to sing, I think, sing his name for for years and years, years later, because during that tiny little purple patch, he scored two goals against Liverpool.
00:11:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah remember.
00:11:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
And they were great goals. think remember.
00:11:22
Nick Britten
i
00:11:24
Nick Britten
Yeah, and and that did endear him to the Manchester United supporters. and But essentially, to everybody else, he remains an absolute joke.
00:11:35
Nick Britten
And, you know, with the best intentions coming from Maccabi Haifa, get that right? It was ah it was a disaster. But there is a great story about Diego Forlheim.
00:11:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm.
00:11:46
Nick Britten
Kind of why he he's never intended to become a professional footballer. a and And it was only after his sister was paralyzed in a car ah that he turned to football as a way of raising money to pay for her um medical looks.
00:12:04
Nick Britten
Because he' died his dad was a great footballer in South America. He was very well-known.
00:12:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:12:07
Nick Britten
um And actually, it was Diego Maradona who helped the family raise money. And Diego Foreman went into football because it helped him raise money to pay for his
00:12:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, good luck to him then. I remember him playing in the for Argentina in the World Cup and thinking, you know, really, really, really good player.
00:12:20
Nick Britten
Thank you.
00:12:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
But, you know, obviously he never scored. He scored his first Man United goal after 34 games. Imagine trotting out on your 33rd appearance or trotting back in at the end of your 33rd appearance.
00:12:35
Nick Britten
but
00:12:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
Still haven't scored.
00:12:37
Nick Britten
good
00:12:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
You must be thinking...
00:12:37
Nick Britten
I watched it earlier on, actually, when I was researching this, and it was a penalty. And you can see him. United got a penalty in his European Cup game. And United have got a penalty, a Champions League. Sorry, I didn't fall in the European Cup, I'm all kind of game. United have got penalty. Beckham's got the ball take the penalty.
00:12:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah
00:12:56
Nick Britten
And Foyle's answer is like, please, please, please give it to me, give it to me. So Beckham does. And fair play. He sticks in the bottom corner. And he's up and running. He always came across as a nice guy.
00:13:06
Nick Britten
And what I liked about him and what Manchester United fans liked about him and what every football fan should like about him is he worked unbelievably hard.
00:13:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I remember that.
00:13:14
Nick Britten
He would run and run and run and run, which is great. The sort of downside of that is A bit like under sevens. You know, when you run around the pitch, you're normally completely out of position and you're not meant to be... When the ball comes across to you to tap it into empty net from six yards out, you're 55 yards away you know on your own goal line because you've been running that way. He's one of those sorts of players.
00:13:36
Nick Britten
But fair play. He was a bad buy. I like the guy. So with a bit of sympathy and with a touch of regret, Diego Forlan is my number two.
00:13:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, hats off to Diego Forlan. I quite like him after that description of him. Right, my number two. And again, bit of a theme developing here.
00:13:51
Nick Britten
um
00:13:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
Players who play well in the World Cup get it attracted by Premier League teams, get attracted by them. They bring them over and absolutely do nothing. And one such player was Josie Altimore.
00:14:01
Nick Britten
I do, yeah.
00:14:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
Do you remember him?
00:14:05
Nick Britten
cool ah i do Yeah,
00:14:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
The American.
00:14:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah
00:14:08
Nick Britten
could show
00:14:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Decent, decent player, decent international record, 42 goals in 115 for the USA.
00:14:11
Nick Britten
right but
00:14:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
And the USA were playing, you know, good teams at that time.
00:14:19
Nick Britten
ah
00:14:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah He was at Hull. In 2009-10, he scored one in 28. Now, that's clearly you've proved it's not working.
00:14:30
Nick Britten
this
00:14:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
So he goes over to Alkmaar and Sunderland, see him smashing him in for Alkmaar, go and pick him up in 2013 for 9 million quid.
00:14:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's already got one in 28 for Hull.
00:14:45
Nick Britten
No.
00:14:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
He then proceeds for Sunderland to get one in 47.
00:14:50
Nick Britten
the
00:14:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
So he has the record in the Premier League of having scored two goals in, what is that, 75 games, two in 75 games.
00:15:04
Nick Britten
but
00:15:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
I reckon I could do that. Do you reckon I could get two goals in 75 games, Nick, in the Premier League?
00:15:08
Nick Britten
oh three hundred no No, I don't think you can get two goals in 75 games if you went into your back garden and had an empty little net, of those kids' nets, and tried to kick your ball into it.
00:15:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
LAUGHTER
00:15:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
Okay. okay well
00:15:22
Nick Britten
OK, thank you.
00:15:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, to be honest, what one of the things I know I wouldn't be able to do is then get a transfer to Toronto FC in Canada, like Dozy Josie did, and get 62 goals in 139 games.
00:15:29
Nick Britten
like ah and
00:15:35
Nick Britten
well
00:15:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
So clearly he was a player, but he had to find his level, and his level wasn't the Premier League.
00:15:42
Nick Britten
Yeah, no, 100%. It was one of those. It was one of those. And we've seen them so many times down Premier League. You buy somebody, because I've got a good showreel, and a big highlight, good highlights on YouTube, and had a good season, and that'll do.
00:15:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:15:56
Nick Britten
No. Never have happened.
00:15:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Okay. So what have we got for your number one?
00:15:59
Nick Britten
Never have happened.
00:16:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
Your number one dodgy forward.
00:16:04
Nick Britten
I'm going to shoot my number one because we've already had it. You've already had it. my My number one bo worst striker in Premier League, given all the circumstances ah around it, was absolutely Andrei Shevchenko for all the reasons we've discussed.
00:16:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:16:19
Nick Britten
So just a very, very brief, in that case, very brief honourable mention to Mr. Kenny Miller. And there's a good and there there' a good and bad reason for that.
00:16:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh, yeah.
00:16:29
Nick Britten
The the bad reason was he played for the Derby County side of 2007 to 2008. which managed a measly 11 points and which still makes them the worst training league club in history.
00:16:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
And they didn't score many, did they, that season?
00:16:43
Nick Britten
No, they didn't. No, no, no, no. Kenny played 30 times and scored four goals. Utter garbage. He was a terrible team, terrible player. Never worked it out. He was brilliant at the Rangers. Terrible at Derby.
00:16:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
He was.
00:16:54
Nick Britten
But that's all the bad stuff. But I would just like to give him an honourable mention because in my household, he's an absolute legend. Because in...
00:17:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
wife.
00:17:03
Nick Britten
In those in that that worst, horrible, terrible season where we just we only won one game all season.
00:17:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
I know where we're going with this.
00:17:13
Nick Britten
You do. And that one game that we won. we' beat newcast
00:17:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
remember.
00:17:19
Nick Britten
who my wife and all her family are big Newcastle fans.
00:17:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
I was there.
00:17:22
Nick Britten
And Kenny Miller scored the goal that beat Newcastle at Pride Park.
00:17:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
remember.
00:17:26
Nick Britten
And I went to that game, obviously, but better now, Mrs. Brim went to the game as well. And she got in such a bad mood. obviously it my fault that Newcastle lost.
00:17:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, it was your fault.
00:17:35
Nick Britten
my fault time So it was a double victory for me that night, Kenny. It was a double victory. Not only Derby win their one and only game that season, but I got three or four days peace and quiet because my wife refused to speak to me.
00:17:48
Nick Britten
So, Kenny Miller, thank you very much indeed.
00:17:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:17:50
Nick Britten
Thank you very much.
00:17:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
Spare bedroom, I reckon, that night. So, well, well done, Kenny Miller. Well done, Shevchenko.
00:17:55
Nick Britten
but
00:17:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
think we're definitely on the same page on that. My number one, and there can only be one, and it doesn't quite tick the box of being in ah with a big club, but Ali Dia.
00:18:00
Nick Britten
to
00:18:07
Nick Britten
Oh yes! Oh yes!
00:18:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
Ali Dia. you remember Ali Dia?
00:18:10
Nick Britten
to hundred how do
00:18:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
Ali Dia, a guy who claimed to be George Weyer's cousin.
00:18:17
Nick Britten
oh yeah ah but
00:18:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
So Graham Souness, Southampton boss, he's already been rejected, released by three lower...
00:18:21
Nick Britten
and has to be um if um
00:18:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
Gillingham, Bournemouth, Rotherham have seen him on trial and said, guilty, get out.
00:18:29
Nick Britten
like
00:18:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, you're not a football player. But then Souness gets a phone call from someone.
00:18:37
Nick Britten
ah
00:18:39
Nick Britten
how do have
00:18:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
We need to do some investigative journalism.
00:18:40
Nick Britten
to I'm I'm sorry.
00:18:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
They can find out who that someone was.
00:18:42
Nick Britten
I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm I'm sorry. I'm sorry. sorry.
00:18:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
And he says, ah purporting to be George Weyer himself ringing up Souness and saying, play this lad.
00:18:46
Nick Britten
I'm sorry. I'm I'm I'm sorry. sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry.
00:18:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's a great player.
00:18:53
Nick Britten
sorry. I'm sorry.
00:18:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's played for, I think the claim was that he's played for Paris Saint-Germain.
00:18:54
Nick Britten
I'm I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry.
00:18:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
Anyway, he comes on.
00:18:59
Nick Britten
I'm sorry. I'm I'm sorry.
00:19:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's supposed to have a reserve team game.
00:19:01
Nick Britten
I'm sorry. sorry. I'm sorry. sorry.
00:19:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
It gets washed out because it's flooded the pitch.
00:19:03
Nick Britten
sorry. I'm I'm sorry. I'm
00:19:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
And he goes on as a substitute. And he's on the pitch for nine minutes before he's substituted off. He's got a month's contract, though. He makes thousands of quid. But after two weeks of his contract, he's kicked out.
00:19:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
So I i think, the and he was a forward.
00:19:21
Nick Britten
um um but So you
00:19:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
He actually replaced on the pitch Matt Letiziae. So I think we have to say that the dodgiest, crummiest, worst footballer forward that's ever played in the Premier League is Mr Ali Dia.
00:19:39
Nick Britten
so
00:19:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
Would you agree with that, Nick?
00:19:42
Nick Britten
That's an absolutely inspired choice. That is an inspired choice. You've dug that out of nowhere. You've literally...
00:19:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah We have to find him. I think we have to find Ali Dia and get him on the podcast.
00:19:51
Nick Britten
ah ah I think we should, shouldn't we? Yeah, we should.
00:19:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, think it's doable as well.
00:19:56
Nick Britten
Right, John, let's go on.
00:19:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think it's in Dubai somewhere.
00:19:57
Nick Britten
Let's get away at some.
00:19:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's probably earning £10 million pan a week.
00:19:59
Nick Britten
Get away at some. Yeah. yeah
00:20:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
Right, okay, so that was dodgy footballers. Right, we better move on. It's 20 minutes already. in the out Why does this take so long to do? Because we natter so much. Tell me about ah rule you'd like to change.
00:20:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
out No, before you do that, um good to i'm goingnna I'm going to play an advert.
00:20:16
Nick Britten
That's not the first.
00:20:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
Here we go. going to try and play an advert anyway.
00:21:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
He goes on a bit, doesn't that fellow?
00:21:03
Nick Britten
Right, half time.
00:21:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
Goes on a bit.
00:21:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
Now, tell me about a um tell me about a rule, because you're a ref, you're a qualified ref. Tell me about a rule that you would desperately like to change, and I'll tell you one that I would like to.
00:21:17
Nick Britten
right half time Half times are so annoying football. They go on for far too long. They're absolutely pointless. Nobody really wants them. You can't do anything.
00:21:28
Nick Britten
So my proposal to you, Ken, in terms of rules which you change in football, is take a lesson out of Sunday league football where the the referee blows half time whistle. so Both teams go and stand on the touchline, have a natter five minutes, have an orange or a cup of tea and come back out again.
00:21:44
Nick Britten
None of this going into the dressing room, hanging around for 15 minutes, getting stiff and and and losing your momentum in the game, coming out and pulling your hamstring.
00:21:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
Next.
00:21:53
Nick Britten
No, keep yourself warm, short break, short and sharp, get it over and done with and get on the game. There's no reason to have 15 minutes halftime. As a supporter... You can't go down to get a drink because if you leave ah when the half-time whistle goes, you're going to miss the first ten minutes of the second half.
00:22:08
Nick Britten
Or you've got to miss the last ten minutes of the first half to get there in time. You sit there in the cold, trying to get a reception on your phone, and you can't get any reception on your phone because you're the middle a football stadium.
00:22:19
Nick Britten
So you're just twiddling your thumbs, waiting for something to happen. Just get rid of it. Nobody wants it. Nobody needs it. We can go back to the old days where football finished at 10 to 5 and get on the final nights.
00:22:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh, wouldn't that be nice? That's a cracker because half-time, 50, is it 50 minutes? Is it 15 or 10?
00:22:35
Nick Britten
well
00:22:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
What's the official? It's neither one or the other, isn't it? It's not long enough to do anything and it's not short enough to, to you know, it's too it just gets boring because you can't do anything, as you say.
00:22:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
You can't even have a wee because you're 84th in the queue by the time you get down there.
00:22:50
Nick Britten
i yeah
00:22:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
i mean
00:22:53
Nick Britten
um this is just it unnecessary and be done
00:22:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Right, great. I'm 100% behind that. I absolutely will second that motion. Here's my motion.
00:23:03
Nick Britten
like
00:23:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
And it's something we've talked about before. And it's more of a, I feel this is a campaign, actually.
00:23:08
Nick Britten
the online activity and
00:23:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'd like to start the campaign, which is a complete revision. And I'm talking a total change to penalties.
00:23:16
Nick Britten
And we've all those issues. we've got to do with the social media. And we've got to do with the social media.
00:23:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
I hate penalties.
00:23:21
Nick Britten
And we've got to do with the media.
00:23:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
I want a new sheet of paper because when you think about what a penalty is, and it's worth going back to absolute basics on this, is in my mind, a penalty is a compensation to a wrong team for the denial of a goal scoring opportunity through the use of foul play by the opposition.
00:23:24
Nick Britten
we've got to with the social media. And we've got to with the social And we've got to do with the social media. And we've got to do with the social media. And we've got to do with the social media.
00:23:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Now, that is what I thought a penalty is. It's not actually. The official definition is it's simply a foul awarded when an offence punishable by a direct free kick is committed by a player in their own penalty area.
00:23:45
Nick Britten
you
00:23:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
So that is the actual official definition. But actually...
00:23:58
Nick Britten
but
00:23:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
The problem comes with this, which is what is the value of a penalty?
00:24:01
Nick Britten
this
00:24:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, I'm grateful to Opta, who do all kinds of amazing analysis, certainly on football.
00:24:06
Nick Britten
post
00:24:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
but And we're going to use that weird term XG, which I know you're not a massive fan of, but it's useful in...
00:24:15
Nick Britten
yes but absolutely but i will
00:24:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
and It's useful in the context of this. So the XG of a penalty is 0.78.
00:24:20
Nick Britten
so
00:24:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
That means over that historical periods, 78% of penalties are scored.
00:24:24
Nick Britten
um
00:24:30
Nick Britten
cease for school
00:24:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
And that's getting higher and higher every year, by the way. Now, 78% of penalties being scored sounds quite low. If I if i would have thought 90% of penalties are scored, it's not.
00:24:41
Nick Britten
because that's what I'm doing so much more.
00:24:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
Historically, in the Premier League, 78%.
00:24:43
Nick Britten
And they lot of things coming up with a different model.
00:24:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
So it sounds low, but in fact is extremely high.
00:24:47
Nick Britten
And they're not playing. I'm so excited to be coming out of
00:24:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
Because if you look at all the shots that are taken in the league, all of them, and you take out penalties and you take out own goals...
00:24:51
Nick Britten
And see. I'm sure can walk this way out of here. I'm not going to able to out of this. not going to be able come out of this. But think it's going to be a lot fun.
00:24:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
Only 81 of 10,000 shots over a season have a higher XG than a penalty.
00:25:01
Nick Britten
I'm not going to be able to come out of this. I'm not going able to come out this. not going to be able to come of this.
00:25:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
So in fact, when in a penalty is awarded, you're being awarded something that is 99.2%
00:25:15
Nick Britten
um
00:25:19
Nick Britten
think that's what I'm saying.
00:25:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
better said than what you would have got, if you like, in the denial of that opportunity.
00:25:21
Nick Britten
I'm not going to be able do that. I'm not going to able to that.
00:25:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
So the point I'm making is this. The reward for a penalty so far outweighs what we've denied.
00:25:29
Nick Britten
I'm not going to be able to do that. I'm not going to be able to do that. I'm not going to able to do that.
00:25:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's all wrong.
00:25:37
Nick Britten
I'm not going to be able to that.
00:25:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
And it kind of creates certain things.
00:25:40
Nick Britten
I'm not going to be able to that.
00:25:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
So that's why players blatantly dive and try and engineer penalties.
00:25:42
Nick Britten
I'm not going to be able to do that. going to be able to do that.
00:25:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah Diving is one thing. I know you've got to think about engineered ah kind of initiating contact, haven't you?
00:25:51
Nick Britten
I want to say,
00:25:57
Nick Britten
Yeah, that's just a thing. And it was highlighted brilliantly by the other way. ah but Sorry, by the way, the other day when Liverpool played Woods, Diego Jota goes through, keeper comes out, Jota pushes the ball past them.
00:26:09
Nick Britten
The keeper makes no contact with Jota whatsoever. Jota makes contact with the keeper by deliberately sticking his leg into the goalkeeper and then going down. Referee awards a penalty. VAR, and here we go, people. Here we go. This is a praise of VAR. In praise of VAR.
00:26:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you.
00:26:25
Nick Britten
They looked at it and go, no, actually, it's a Liverpool player that's failed the Wolves goalkeeper and therefore it should be a free kick to Wolves, not a penalty. And I really have a bee in my bonnet when players go through, kick the ball around the goalkeeper and aren't going to get it. They know they're not going to get it.
00:26:40
Nick Britten
And as you quite rightly say, they know the chance then of a penalty far outweighs the possibility of scoring than what would have happened if they got a chase after the ball that's on the edge of the area or it's going to play.
00:26:51
Nick Britten
So they just foul the goalkeeper or dive or go, you make sure there's contact and hit the deck. It drives me mad. I really, really don't like And I hope the Diego Jota situation is a watermark moment whereby referees look at this a lot more clearly. at all Or should I say VAR looks at it? Because I don't blame the referee at all. so difficult in real time and at real speed to spot this.
00:27:15
Nick Britten
But now that VAR have done this, hope we see a lot more of it. And I hope it stops players from doing
00:27:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
I couldn't agree more. And that's great great evidence to support my argument. Everyone deep down knows that a penalty is worth more than what was denied by the foul.
00:27:28
Nick Britten
one
00:27:34
Nick Britten
It's a very good thing.
00:27:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
So that's, I think, a key thing. So what you find is players blatantly try and engineer penalties. There's a load of pressure on referees because loads of the frustration around referees in the in the game of football is around the award or the non-award of penalties.
00:27:45
Nick Britten
ah
00:27:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah yeah After every single game, every penalty is soft that was given if you're if you were on the receiving end of it.
00:27:54
Nick Britten
like
00:27:57
Nick Britten
no
00:27:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
And that that's just a massive pressure referees.
00:27:59
Nick Britten
yeah
00:28:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
And the second thing is penalties change games.
00:28:00
Nick Britten
that
00:28:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
You know, on average, there's only three goals scored, not even that, in a football match.
00:28:05
Nick Britten
that it's very hard to come from. And so then, you know, I think it's a great thing to come from the world.
00:28:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
Penalties change games. So that's my thing. I think we need to change the penalties rule. And this is my solution, Nick.
00:28:15
Nick Britten
I think that it's a great thing to
00:28:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I want you to ah want you to tell me whether I've got a good idea here or this is just more Ken nonsense.
00:28:20
Nick Britten
come from the world.
00:28:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
okay
00:28:22
Nick Britten
think that it's a great thing to come from the world.
00:28:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah yeah But wait wait wait till I've said it first, if you don't mind.
00:28:25
Nick Britten
I think that it's great thing to come from the world.
00:28:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
So this is my solution. Tell me whether yeah this would work.
00:28:29
Nick Britten
I think that it's great thing to come from the world.
00:28:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think penalties should still be given where a foul is committed, but they are...
00:28:32
Nick Britten
I think that it's a great thing come from the world.
00:28:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
the penalty kick is taken from where the foul was committed.
00:28:37
Nick Britten
constant right
00:28:41
Nick Britten
ah so
00:28:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
So if it's on the edge of the box, right in the corner, right over there, right on the edge of the the the corner of the box, obviously the XG of that person when he was fouled was low because he was miles away.
00:28:44
Nick Britten
oh but
00:28:49
Nick Britten
i
00:28:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
If it's right on the... on the goal line, then it's much higher.
00:29:02
Nick Britten
so
00:29:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
So I'm saying that all penalties should be taken from the place that the foul was committed.
00:29:07
Nick Britten
that one see. Absolutely.
00:29:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
And what would happen then, that would make the XG of the penalty much closer to the XG of what was denied by the foul.
00:29:18
Nick Britten
just
00:29:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
I rest my case.
00:29:20
Nick Britten
It's a great idea. It's a great idea. There's one flaw in it, though.
00:29:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh dear.
00:29:25
Nick Britten
In the gym, it's a great idea. There's one flaw it, and it's just what we were talking about. So if a player runs through on goal, yeah and he's and he's kind of in between the posts, let's say, yeah and he kicks the ball past the goalkeeper, but he knows he's got no chance getting it,
00:29:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
Okay.
00:29:39
Nick Britten
So he thinks, right, I'm going to kick the keeper and go down, or I'm going to dive over him, going to do something and cheat my way into a penalty. That offence still takes place in between the posts, if you like, whereas if he'd run after the ball, when he makes contact with the ball, he'll be nearer the goal line or he'll be you'll be outside the the width of the posts.
00:29:56
Nick Britten
So he would still benefit, if you know what I mean, from getting... a penalty to kick in that circumstances where where where that reward far outweighs where his chances of scoring from from where he would have collected the ball.
00:30:08
Nick Britten
Do you see what i mean?
00:30:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
I do. it's It's definitely a point and it's not a perfect system, but it's more perfect than the system we've got now.
00:30:10
Nick Britten
least ah people not
00:30:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:30:15
Nick Britten
I like it, i like it, because you know what, it'll stop. I'll tell you, when we see this a lot, you know, players barging their way into the penalty area, they're surrounded by two or three defenders, they're not really going to go anywhere, and they just hit the deck.
00:30:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:30:26
Nick Britten
They just hit the deck. And if they were then to have a penalty where they had to bend it in from quite a tight angle, they're not going to bother with that high, because they've got a very long time of strike.
00:30:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
And wouldn't it be more entertaining? Wouldn't it be more entertaining someone trying to hit you from 20 yards on the corner to than just against a keeper?
00:30:40
Nick Britten
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:30:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm telling you, that's the future.
00:30:43
Nick Britten
It's a bad idea. no It's great idea mate, I'm all um' more on board. I'm all on board.

Global Sports Podcast Network

00:31:35
Nick Britten
Yeah.
00:31:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
Just to let you know last week's results, I got 7 out of 11.
00:31:39
Nick Britten
um
00:31:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
You got 5 out of 11.
00:31:40
Nick Britten
that you yeah know you have good weight us yeah yeah yeah that affect like
00:31:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah First time, Joe got 6 out of 11. So now then the gap is narrowed to 7, and we've got 20 games to look at. So, right, I'm going to whistle through them because we've already had half an hour on this.
00:31:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Leicester, Brentford,
00:31:58
Nick Britten
but Yeah, um for me, it's a straightforward away win. Leicester are terrible. Brentford's away. Actually, Brentford's home and away forms flipped a little bit. They were terrible away, great home. But they've won the last two. They've won at Palace. They've won West Ham.
00:32:10
Nick Britten
ah They're going to make it three. They'll win at Leicester away with.
00:32:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
I've got an away winner as well, Leicester. Oh, Leicester. ah Everton v Man United.
00:32:19
Nick Britten
OK, yeah, after Elm and Everton, as we know, picked up the last two home games, they beat Tottenham. They had that thrilling draw with Liverpool. They're really heading in the right direction. Manchester United have got just very little about them.
00:32:32
Nick Britten
I'm going to go for a home win.
00:32:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
So have I.
00:32:35
Nick Britten
are
00:32:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
Bournemouth against Wolves.
00:32:36
Nick Britten
oh yeah and Yeah, um again, I'm going for a away win here. I kind of, well, I kind expect Wolves to pick up. I think they were very good in the transfer market.
00:32:47
Nick Britten
They've solidified their defence. I think they're a good side, but equally Bournemouth are fourth in the in the form table at the moment. They've won four out the last six. They're good away from home. They're difficult team to play against.
00:32:58
Nick Britten
So I think it's going to be tight, but I think Bournemouth going to sneak it.
00:33:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's... Oh, Bournemouth at home.
00:33:03
Nick Britten
Yeah.
00:33:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
I thought Bournemouth were at home rather than away there.
00:33:07
Nick Britten
Oh, I thought, oh, right, okay, fine. You tell me.
00:33:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Are you going for Bournemouth?
00:33:09
Nick Britten
You're the one who...
00:33:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
I, too, am going for Bournemouth. too, am going for Bournemouth. Arsenal against West Ham.
00:33:15
Nick Britten
Yeah, home, you're right. Well, in that case, definitely definitely a Bournemouth win.
00:33:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yep.
00:33:22
Nick Britten
Home win.
00:33:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yep, and for me.
00:33:23
Nick Britten
and Yeah, yeah.
00:33:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
Arsenal against West Ham.
00:33:26
Nick Britten
Arsenal, yeah, home win. West Ham, I'm really doing much. Arsenal will be too good.
00:33:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
No. Here's an adjustment. Palace. ah Sorry, Fulham versus Palace.
00:33:35
Nick Britten
I working out my way. I've been feeling well in the back of some good form. They had a very good win against Forest last week. They're good at home. They're entertaining to watch. Palace's away form is really, really good. It's been excellent all season.
00:33:48
Nick Britten
They're a difficult, difficult team to play against at home. Hard one to call, so I'm going to sit on a fence, score draw.
00:33:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Great. I've gone for a home win.
00:33:56
Nick Britten
Great. Thank you having me.
00:33:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Ipswich against Spurs.
00:34:00
Nick Britten
Yeah, home win. Sorry, no, not home win, away win. Tottenham to win this. Ipswich are really, really struggling. They're bottom of the form table. Their last six away games, sorry, their last six games, shall I say, they've lost four and drawn two.
00:34:15
Nick Britten
They can't buy a win. They're starting to look like a relegated side. Tottenham had a good win against Man United last week. I expect them to carry on, and I'll go for Spurs win.
00:34:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yep, same here.
00:34:25
Nick Britten
Thank you.
00:34:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you, Brighton.
00:34:28
Nick Britten
I found this one a little bit difficult Brighton are up and down a little bit. um They beat Chelsea yeah really, really well last week. Good 3-0 win. But that was on the back of a seven ni defeat against Norwich Forest.
00:34:39
Nick Britten
um And they lost equally the last away game before that. They lost Everton So their away form's not great. I do expect them to be too good for Southampton on the day, though. Could be an entertaining game.
00:34:51
Nick Britten
Could be high-scoring game. But I think... Once Brighton get into their rhythm, and maybe in the last half an hour of the game they'll come good, and I'm going to go for an away win. I think Chelsea just
00:34:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
Okay. I've gone for a draw. I think Southampton aren't going to lose every game from now the rest the season. And I think that's one where they're going to pick up a point. Villa v Chelsea. Interesting one.
00:35:09
Nick Britten
seem to be a little bit... i went it ah think chelsea just seemed to be a little bit all over the place at the moment. They're not really hitting any kind of rhythm. ah The league form's pretty poor.
00:35:21
Nick Britten
they were play They were really meek against Brighton in their last outing. and Really meek. And Villa are very good at home. So, yeah, home win.
00:35:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, they push Palmer up front, haven't they, I think?
00:35:31
Nick Britten
Yeah, it looks
00:35:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I think he's taken something out of his game.
00:35:33
Nick Britten
yeah
00:35:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
It'll be interesting to watch ah what happens there. um Newcastle v Forest. Interesting game.
00:35:40
Nick Britten
very interesting game. This can go either way. Can go either way. you know, Forest's last couple of games, 7-0 against Brighton. so But then they were largely outplayed in the last away game against Fulham. 2-1, I don't think Fata Fulham.
00:35:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
No.
00:35:53
Nick Britten
I think Fulham should won that by a little bit more.
00:35:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
No.
00:35:56
Nick Britten
Forest were hanging on. i was talking to the guys at the Forest, GSPN, Forest pod yesterday about this fixture. They're a bit worried that Forest is starting to run out steam and just look a tired team. They're just looking tired.
00:36:08
Nick Britten
They're
00:36:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Told you.
00:36:10
Nick Britten
I'm expecting... No, didn you didn't. You said, before his bubble has burst, 24 hours before they put seven past Brighton. So don't look at me like I told you.
00:36:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
it's i just had more foresight than the next day.
00:36:19
Nick Britten
yeah
00:36:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
as simple as that.
00:36:22
Nick Britten
escape
00:36:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
So what are you going Newcastle of the Forest?
00:36:23
Nick Britten
Well, I'm expecting a Newcastle reaction after their 4-0 battering at Man City. And they were poor Newcastle that day. Eddie Howell wanted a lot better. So i've kind of I'm going to go for a home win, but it's going to be tight.
00:36:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
I've gone for a draw. I think there's two evenly matched teams there.
00:36:37
Nick Britten
It's going to be tight.
00:36:39
Nick Britten
Yeah, it could be the...
00:36:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
And talking about two evenly matched teams, Man City against Liverpool.
00:36:46
Nick Britten
They're not evenly matched, or a way
00:36:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
And the same for me. Right, let's whistle through the Tuesday and Wednesday and Thursday fixtures.
00:36:50
Nick Britten
yeah
00:36:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
Brighton v Bournemouth.
00:36:55
Nick Britten
win. Yeah, um I'm going to continue with my Bournemouth theme on this and go for an away win. I'm going to go for an away win.
00:37:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
Okay, I've gone at home win. Palace v Villa.
00:37:08
Nick Britten
Score draw.
00:37:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yep, same here. Wolves against Fulham.
00:37:11
Nick Britten
ah Okay. ah i just look Genuinely, Wolves have got to pick up. This is a sort game they'll look out home and think, we've got to start winning these games. I think they will start winning games, and I think um this this might be one for them to pick up three points.
00:37:27
Nick Britten
So, you know, Fulham, I keep saying this every week, Fulham are joy to watch. They're good sign. Wolves have got to win sooner or later, so I'm going to go for a home win.
00:37:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yep, so have I. We ah agreed on that one.
00:37:37
Nick Britten
Okay.
00:37:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
Again, evenly matched teams. Chelsea against Southampton.
00:37:41
Nick Britten
three You know what? This is it.
00:37:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hey.
00:37:50
Nick Britten
I'm going to go for a Southampton win in this game.
00:37:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.
00:37:54
Nick Britten
I'm going to go for Southampton win. I've just got a feeling Chelsea's season is starting to capitulate and Southampton will go there with nothing to lose. They'll be massive underdogs. They play good football when they're on it. The problem is they concede the problem is they can seede They can see sloppy goals, but Chelsea aren't really scoring goals.
00:38:12
Nick Britten
So, go on. Away wins, Sam's to win it. And in doing so, by the way, beat, they'll get up to 12 points.
00:38:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
way
00:38:21
Nick Britten
Beat Derby's record. Derby will remain the worst team in Premier League history.
00:38:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
As we know. So, well, I tell you, I reckon that might be your ah your Nottingham Forest moment.
00:38:27
Nick Britten
Good night.
00:38:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
I can see Chelsea putting seven past Southampton. Right, Brentford v Everton. Interesting game.
00:38:36
Nick Britten
trust Yeah, Brentford's home form's dropped off. Everton are picking up. a Yeah, they'll they'llll they'll be they'll be good. They'll be good for a point here, Everton. They'll be good for a point. So let's give them a point and score draw.
00:38:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
Okay, I've got an away win. I'm not backing anyone against Everton at the moment. They're looking decent. Man United against Ipswich. I mean, surely.
00:38:57
Nick Britten
great Yeah, well, yes, home win, surely. No, don't say that with any confidence, but surely home win.
00:39:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
No? Oh, they've got to win that. Amarim's in trouble if they're not winning that one. Forest against Arsenal.
00:39:11
Nick Britten
Arsenal.
00:39:14
Nick Britten
I think Arsenal's lack of goal threat is going to come to the fore against teams that are in and around Forrester very much in and around Home win.
00:39:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
Wow, I've got an away win for that one.
00:39:24
Nick Britten
anyway
00:39:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
Spurs v Man City. Interesting game.
00:39:28
Nick Britten
Yeah, I can't. It's very difficult. I mean, I know Man City thrashed Newcastle last week, but I'm not going lie that Newcastle are terrible. Man City didn't have to do that much. They'd have the game wrapped up within half an hour.
00:39:40
Nick Britten
I can't get over the fact that sooner or later Tottenham are going to start playing well. I think Matty Stel is a good player. I think he's going to add a lot to their front line. I think their season's going to pick up, the form's going to pick up, and I'm going to go for a home win.
00:39:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
I've got a home win too.
00:39:52
Nick Britten
I don't know.
00:39:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
i And didn't Spurs put four past them at the City?
00:39:58
Nick Britten
no
00:39:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
then then They smashed them at City, didn't they?
00:40:00
Nick Britten
yeah
00:40:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
and city
00:40:01
Nick Britten
Yeah, yes yeah, yeah.
00:40:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
hu Liverpool Newcastle.
00:40:03
Nick Britten
and Things haven't got much better for City since, I think.
00:40:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
No. That's true.
00:40:07
Nick Britten
It's true.
00:40:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
So Liverpool Newcastle.
00:40:11
Nick Britten
Yeah, we remember the days, Kenny, you and i don't we? have Those classic games between Liverpool and Newcastle.
00:40:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh. Oh, yeah.
00:40:18
Nick Britten
Four fours and four threes and this and that.
00:40:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh, yeah, game of the season.
00:40:20
Nick Britten
Last minute the Dole's won. Stan Colleymore and Kevin Keegan ducking behind the the board when they let a goal in right along. I mean, they're classic. They're always great games. They're always great games. This should be another cracker to watch. um But Liverpool at home are too strong, I think, and they'll theyll come out. Victors are going to go for a Liverpool win.
00:40:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Nunes Hattrick.
00:40:41
Nick Britten
wouldn't go that far. Dole's probably perhaps, but not Darwin, Eunice.
00:40:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
I reckon in 10 years when we do that, worst footballer, Nunes might be right up there, you know. Anyway, ah
00:40:53
Nick Britten
Yeah, okay, maybe.
00:40:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
what West Ham v Leicester, just to finish it off.
00:40:58
Nick Britten
Yeah. It's difficult to know about West Ham because they're just a kind of they're just sort of sunk into of nothingness, haven't they? They're not winning games. They're not really doing anything. um And if you can't beat Leicester, what hope is there for you? But I just think there's a lot of discontent going around there.
00:41:16
Nick Britten
Leicester have got to pick up points. you know what? I fancy a draw here. I fancy a draw.
00:41:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'd already written down home win for you there, but I've happily changed you to draw because I need all the points I can to make up.
00:41:23
Nick Britten
I don't
00:41:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think West Ham will win that one because you just think Leicester, you can't back Leicester at the moment.
00:41:32
Nick Britten
think you can back West Ham either.
00:41:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
So that's it.
00:41:34
Nick Britten
this is true.
00:41:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, this is true. This is true. So ah big game tomorrow at 12.30, Millwall against Derby. That's going to be an interesting one. But yeah so that's on the telly as well.
00:41:45
Nick Britten
but
00:41:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
So if you if you want to understand why people watch the Premier League, watch that game tomorrow and that will explain why.
00:41:49
Nick Britten
so
00:41:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah
00:41:51
Nick Britten
So, yeah, i'll be that I'll be there, as always, and I'll be looking forward to it.
00:41:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
Give us a wave. So brilliant.
00:41:55
Nick Britten
but
00:41:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, that's been when we set out this podcast. day you say ray It's going to be a really quick 30 minutes. And here we are, 42 minutes just clocked by ah because we could just natter about it all day.
00:42:04
Nick Britten
i
00:42:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
But we won't. It's time to say goodbye. You have a fantastic week.
00:42:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you for listening.
00:42:09

00:42:15
Global Sports Podcast Network

00:42:25
Nick Britten
that
00:42:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And
00:42:26
Nick Britten
We don't have one from Mr Eustice next week.
00:42:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
we might do.
00:42:30
Nick Britten

00:42:30
