Introduction and Overview

00:00:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Welcome to episode five of That Saturday Feeling. I'm your host today, Ken Davis. Now, this is the podcast that reaches part of the podcast cannot reach. And today we've got a slightly different flavor to the podcast because we've reached the halfway stage of the season.

Global Sports Podcast Network
and in time honored fashion, it's time for the halftime report. So who's going to be on the Honors Board? Who's going to be staying back in detention? So to run the rule over all the teams, we are live today from the staff room of the GSPN Academy brackets special measures. And we've assembled all of our tutors to give their grades from

GSPN Academy and Team Introductions

00:00:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
top to bottom. And let me introduce those tutors to you. Firstly, Ex-Head Girl of St. Trinians, Head of Discipline at GSPN Academy. It's Kate Monroe.
00:01:11
Cate
I thought you were talking about Nick then.
00:01:13
Joe Forrester
ah
00:01:14
Cate
I had a vision in my head.
00:01:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
um I'm going to come to Nick.
00:01:17
Cate
Hi, yeah, I'm Kate. I am a long suffering, lazy United fan. Not doing, not feeling too bad about that at the moment, actually. Um, especially obviously Nick and I kind of met, didn't we?
00:01:28
Cate
Um, a few days ago in the, uh, in December when we met at pride park and, uh, unfortunately for you, we won. i quite
00:01:37
Nick Britten
Yeah, yeah, but at least we turned out this time because we didn't do it Alan road a few weeks ago, so you know Yeah, totally everything everything like that.
00:01:39
Joe Forrester
Ha ha ha.
00:01:39
Cate
but But it was a restful, wasn't it? Yeah.
00:01:45
Nick Britten
but No, it's okay. It was okay. I thought leaves looked leaves look pretty average We made them look pretty average in their return game having having made you look absolute world pieces Early on in the month, so we'll take it
00:01:45
Cate
yeah
00:01:56
Cate
Yeah. I can't deny it. It was, I was squeaking squeaky bum for most of that much, but yeah. Good to be here, Ken.
00:02:02
Nick Britten
That's just the pies at Pride Park.
00:02:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
Welcome, welcome Kate. We've got also in the house, in the staff room, head of football wizardry at Hogwarts, head of careers at GSP, GSPN academy bracket special measures. It's Jesse Sauer.
00:02:25
Jesse
How are you doing, Ken? um I'm good. I'm good. um I'm also the one of the hosts for the Daily Liverpool podcast. And I'm really annoyed because Joe Forrester sat. I can see him smirking. He sent a really, really gloating voice note that we had to play on the um on the podcast. ah But you know what? Anfield next, Joe. And so, you know, I'm getting that voice note ready.
00:02:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
And that's a nice segue to ex-head boy at Postecoglio College.

Team Performances and Managerial Changes

00:02:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Head of Arts, it's none other than Joe Forrester. How are you doing, Joe?
00:03:03
Joe Forrester
I'm very well, yeah, I'm very well. I'm good to be here and yeah, I'm the part of the team and on the Daily Tottenham Podcast, so I'm ah no stranger to a bit of corporal punishment.
00:03:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
And last, and by all means least, It's the ex-head of domestic science at Bath Street Comprehensive, now head of school dinner provision at GSPN Academy. It's none other than Nick Britton.
00:03:33
Nick Britten
What a rise to fame. What a rise to fame. I feel like Unai Emery coming from the depths to manage a Champions League team. I've got my Derby County slipper ready for all those naughty managers out there who have been massively underperforming. And it's very kind that you gave me Nottingham Forest to assess, Ken. that's That was just a little bit of a dirty trick, but I'm looking forward to getting into this. and Obviously you and I have been carrying on that Saturday Feeding podcast, Kenny and I. We've been keeping it alive whilst the others have been off doing other stuff. I'm surprised to see Joe back from his exodus in Saudi Arabia, where he was last seen pitching his tent ready for the World Cup.
00:04:07
Nick Britten
And a few years time ah now that leaves have beaten Derby twice Kate's finally decided to show her face ah But I'm quite I'm quite surprised to see Jesse who's Who's got to be on the receiving ends of some gloating stuff this week ah because he's done nothing but glow all season and I thought I thought you might not have the yeah you might have nerve to show up up there before lost so much It's good, it's good to see everybody
00:04:12
Cate
yeah ah
00:04:25
Jesse
Half time. Half time, Nick. It's half time. It's half time.
00:04:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
Great. So this is the format. Well, before we actually, well,
00:04:36
Nick Britten
Wait a minute, wait a minute, wait a minute. How do you introduce yourself, please?
00:04:38
Cate
your Yeah.
00:04:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah My name's Ken Davis, head of everything, really.
00:04:40
Cate
ah
00:04:41
Nick Britten
Yeah, toilet cleaner, a part extraordinaire.
00:04:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
I consider myself really the yeah the Chair of Governors at GSPN Academy. ah So just watch your step, everyone.
00:04:52
Joe Forrester
I can see that.
00:04:52
Cate
Yeah.
00:04:53
Nick Britten
What a surprise.
00:04:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, we're going to be off steady. We're going to be off steady next week.
00:04:57
Nick Britten
Yeah, self-appointed chair of governors, I may add.
00:05:00
Cate
yeah
00:05:00
Nick Britten
Nobody else voted for him.
00:05:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
So here we go. Before we get into the half-term reports, though, there there's hot news coming out of Goodison College that it seems that their head of sports and geography teacher, Mr, what is, Deitch,
00:05:22
Nick Britten
Oh, gosh, yeah.
00:05:22
Cate
John died.
00:05:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mr. Deitch, well, he's gone, he's gone long forgotten. Mr. Deitch has been sacked and everybody can breathe an enormous sigh of relief.
00:05:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
What's your thoughts about this?
00:05:32
Jesse
Ken, you went so far down that education rabbit hole, you forgot his name.
00:05:39
Jesse
um that yeah no In terms of him being sacked, long overdue, overrated manager, over to you.
00:05:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah
00:05:49
Cate
No, he is. He really is.
00:05:51
Jesse
ah massively overrated. um You know, he's got he's got some he's got some decent players that he could have got a better tune out of.
00:05:53
Cate
There was, they were muting him coming to lead, sorry.
00:05:59
Jesse
um I mean, look at Marco Silva. Look at what he's doing with Iwobi. Iwobi was a disaster at Everton. um I just think that there's this narrative ah around Sean Dyche that he's a safe pair of hands and he won't get you relegated.
00:06:14
Jesse
And what that does, it just gives a club an excuse not to go forward, not to be ambitious, and just to be satisfied with finishing in 15th or 16th place.
00:06:22
Cate
a
00:06:24
Jesse
As long as you don't get relegated. Well done, Sean. Great job. Let's move on to another disaster club.
00:06:30
Cate
I agree.
00:06:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
and So who do you reckon, who do we reckon Joe is the likely to be throwing their CV ah into, into Goodison Park?
00:06:42
Joe Forrester
Well, this is hard, isn't it? Because and firstly, can I just stick up for Sean Dyche a little bit? I do have a soft spot for him. um i like I like his gravelly tones. I like the fact that ah when he lost ah his job at Burnley, he was spotted outside an indie club in ah Nottingham, drinking a beer and wearing a fully buttoned up polo shirt.
00:07:01
Joe Forrester
I mean, I've got a lot I like I like the anecdote about when he was at Watford that apparently ate worms to intimidate younger players. I just I've got a lot of time for it. But yeah, I mean, as a football manager, I think I don't know, I'm not as scathing as Jesse, but if I just had a little look at the stats before the show, everything, everything's XG is minus seven um after 19 games, which basically means there's seven goal scoring opportunities, which they should have taken, which they failed to. um Dwight McNeil is the top goal scorer with only three goals. They've only scored 15 goals in 19 games. You can be as solid as you like at the back, but if you score less than a goal a game, you won't go very far. um In terms of manager, to be honest, I'm a little bit stumped because it would have been Graham Potter, wouldn't it? But obviously, as of today, he's officially at West Ham.
00:07:44
Joe Forrester
um So I don't know. There's part of me that thinks Gareth Southgate.
00:07:49
Cate
Oh no.
00:07:50
Joe Forrester
But but I don't know.
00:07:51
Cate
No, no, no, no.
00:07:52
Joe Forrester
i don't i In all honesty, in all honesty i don't I don't really know what viable candidates are out there. So it might be time that we...
00:07:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mr. Moyes is still around.
00:07:59
Jesse
It's only one man, it's David Moss.
00:08:00
Nick Britten
Yeah, the two the two the two names that are coming out of the bookies are David Moyes and, unbelievably, Jose Mourinho.
00:08:07
Joe Forrester
I thought i thought David Moy said that he that he wasn't going to take a job.
00:08:07
Nick Britten
yeah
00:08:11
Joe Forrester
But apparently he's going, so so back to Everton, is it?
00:08:11
Cate
and
00:08:12
Nick Britten
Now... Well, you're always you're always not going to take a job till you get offered a job that you want to take, so...
00:08:17
Joe Forrester
That's very true. Yeah. Yeah.
00:08:19
Nick Britten
Football's like that, isn't it?
00:08:19
Cate
I agree and Potter wouldn't take anything else till, till West Ham would he?
00:08:24
Cate
Cause he was, he was mooted for quite a few sort of jobs before them.
00:08:28
Joe Forrester
There you go.
00:08:29
Nick Britten
Yeah, I mean, the danger the danger is whoever takes it, the danger is that that they have the spectra of relegation absolutely hanging over them. Wolves have made the change and it's

Everton's Struggles and Relegation Threat

00:08:39
Nick Britten
working.
00:08:39
Nick Britten
Nipz, which is starting to pick up, you know, Lester and Xanten look like they're not going to make it, but that third spot is absolutely there for the taking, and right here, right now, I would say Everton are, you know, right in it in terms of that third relegation space.
00:08:53
Cate
It's about time though, isn't it? It's about time.
00:08:57
Jesse
Absolutely.
00:08:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
It is about time.
00:08:58
Nick Britten
well
00:08:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
i mean they They've not been at the Premier League since dinosaurs roamed the earth, have they?
00:09:03
Cate
Yeah, same old, same old.
00:09:04
Jesse
Now they're the only club that haven't been relegated actually from the top division, from the top flight, even in the first division, they've never been relegated.
00:09:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
No.
00:09:11
Jesse
But I think this is why the new ownership has acted because they are they are odds on to go down and they just cannot afford to get relegated with this new stadium about to be open, which will be the best stadium in the championship.
00:09:27
Jesse
And that's why they've e acted now. And it ah the the latest reports are that Mourinho is not going to be taking this job. but And that David I think Mourinho would take it.
00:09:36
Cate
Well, would you want it? Would you really want it?
00:09:42
Jesse
I think Mourinho would take a job in the Premier League. He he said as much in a press conference in um in Turkey that he'd take a lower level Premier League club and get back into the Premier League.
00:09:49
Cate
for this
00:09:49
Nick Britten
Thank you.
00:09:53
Cate
Really?
00:09:55
Jesse
Yeah, I think he'd take it.
00:09:55
Cate
It's poison chalice. So I mean, I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole personally.
00:09:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
You're not going to be asked, Kate, to be honest. but I mean, you're not.
00:10:02
Jesse
cry
00:10:02
Cate
How do you know?
00:10:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, that would be amazing for the GSPN network if you were.
00:10:07
Cate
How do you know?
00:10:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
But I don't think there's a lot of money coming in at Lab Brooks for UK. I'm sorry to break it to you like that, but I think that's true.
00:10:17
Nick Britten
David Ornstein, who's a very well-respected journalist, has tweeted that talks are ongoing with David Moyes.
00:10:20
Joe Forrester
Yeah.
00:10:23
Cate
oh like
00:10:23
Nick Britten
So there's going to be something in there.
00:10:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, something in there.
00:10:24
Nick Britten
Whether or not it gets to go, there's something in there.
00:10:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
Okay, so that's that's Everton and you are listening to the Global Sports Podcast Network. ah The only network that brings you exclusive daily news and views on your Premier League team and the Premier League team as a whole and women's football and it's a unique listening experience and it puts fans first bringing you the very latest news from your team so subscribe wherever you get your podcasts make sure you're one of our first listeners every day and we're very grateful to those thousands of people who are

Global Sports Podcast Network
So, and pass the word around and look forward to you listening to Global Sports Podcast Network into the distant future. So now we have got some reports to write here in in the staff room at GSPM Academy. And what we're going to do, the way we're going to do this is we're going to start with Arsenal because as in registers of, odd do you remember the register at school?
00:11:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
It was always in alphabetical order, and we're going to do this in alphabetical order. You were always near the top, Britain, weren't you?
00:11:40
Nick Britten
very much so in all manner of ways.
00:11:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Always, always near the top, Forrester, I think, no, Davis, Davis next Forrester, Monroe, Sawa,
00:11:50
Jesse
right at the bottom, as usual.
00:11:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
right at the bottom, one the last two or three. Anyway, let's get going. So Arsenal, and we've divvied these up in no particular order, but so everybody's got, I think, four teams to comment on, give their give their grade four for their first half of the year, and also maybe give a prediction the way you think they're gonna finish. So Kate, over to you, and what is your half-yearly report on Arsenal?
00:12:19
Cate
Okie doke. Well, obviously I've done my research, um, because I'm not a fan, but, uh, I don't mind watching Arsenal to be honest with you. Um, so obviously this is a third year in a row that they're going for the Premier League title.
00:12:33
Cate
Um, back in, uh, the last transfer window, though, they only signed two players over the summer, but, um, plus Raheem Sterling, if that counts, who hasn't really done anything.
00:12:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
There's no...
00:12:43
Cate
Um, They haven't actually lost a Premier League league game this season, um, which is pretty good going at home, I should say at home. And they've only conceded 17 goals. so Um, and that is actually equal to, uh, Liverpool's record. Jesse isn't not, uh, for the tightest events in the league. Um, they've achieved most of their points against the big six teams, which is pretty good. Um,
00:13:10
Cate
Obviously, big injuries as well. Odegard had a big impact where they had a ah dip in form and now of course, Saka. They've also lacked discipline at times. They've given away cheap points against Bournemouth and

Arsenal to Chelsea: Season Assessments

00:13:24
Cate
Brighton, which they shouldn't really have done. um But after their first 20 league games ah last year, they had exactly the same points as they do now, which is, but they obviously didn't have Liverpool Hill are obviously in red hot form so I think overall
00:13:44
Cate
They're having a good season, um, bit more disciplined. I think they're in a good, good place. I don't personally think they're going to win. They're going to, they're going to catch, uh, Liverpool. They've got 40 points. They were put on 46 of course. Um, but I think they're giving it a good go. I think with a few more sort of didn't get maybe a couple of couple more players in, which I i don't know whether they're going to do or not. So I'm going to give it a B plus for Mikel and Arsenal.
00:14:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
Sounds very fair.
00:14:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
Next one, Aston Villa, Nick Britton. You've been asked to run the rule over Villa. What's your, ah what's your ratings?
00:14:25
Nick Britten
Well, I'll tell you something. Unai Emery, again, for the second season running, continues to be Teacher's pet with his smart suit and his tie on the touchline, the maniacal behavior as he's leaping around like some crazy frog. And that slight look of the night around him, which can be both endearing and unsettling at the same time. What's not to love about what Unai is doing at Aston Villa? Because they're doing it again this season. They're eighth in the Premier League, they're fifth in the Champions League.
00:14:53
Nick Britten
and pretty much certain to qualify for the knockout stages barring a complete and utter disaster. Would they have taken out at the start of the season? Well of course they would have done. However, there are things to watch out for.
00:15:06
Nick Britten
Emery, as you're sitting in front of me now, just be careful and watch that league form. Six in the form, guys, have only won three in the last six. Two of them was Leicester, Southampton, they had a good win against Man City, but they have had damaging defeats to teams around them in Forest and in Newcastle. And Villa, please stop charging people £100 to watch European football. You're not that good.
00:15:32
Nick Britten
so We don't like that. We don't like that in the headmaster's office. But on the upside, John Duran and Morgan Rogers have emerged as real stars this season. Ollie Watkins, he's still the top goal scorer with eight in 20 games, but he's doing it sort of under the radar. Everybody seems to have forgotten about him. And that's a good sign for Villa. So they're doing very, very well.
00:15:52
Nick Britten
So I'm going to give Villa a grade of A- It would have been an A, but they get a minus because their league form is a little bit iffy. They are at risk maybe of not qualifying for the Champions League next season, unless of course they win it. And all those accusations are ripping off the faithful. I mean, who would you think you are? Tamworth charging so much for a price of a ticket to a football match. So Emery, get out of the office. You're doing well, but there's still a little bit of work to do.
00:16:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
Very good, very good. ah I've got Bournemouth and Bournemouth in a way I think have been one of the very exciting surprise packages of the season and if I was Mr and Mrs Bournemouth I'd be happy with my little child's efforts. It's made very satisfactory progress this year.
00:16:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah passing test after test that we thought maybe too much for him. But he's risen to the challenge. And there are some difficult tests ahead. Things are going to get more difficult, I think, for Bournemouth. They've lost in the space of two days their center forward and their replacement center forward. So I think things are going to get a little bit tougher. But with dedication and resolve, I think their season is going to continue on the trajectory that it's on. They've invested in young talent, allowing them to push on to a new level. Some great signings, great work rate, really good watch.
00:17:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
excellent well-funded ownership there's not a great deal to dislike about the performance of young Bournemouth this season so I have to with all seriousness give them an A for outstanding effort in the first half of the season I suspect things won't stay that way, so I would imagine you're going to end up about tense, but Bournemouth, you've been very, very good. So that's Bournemouth. Brentford. Joe Forrester. How have you assessed Brentford?
00:18:20
Joe Forrester
Yeah, I think I think obviously one of the hardest things about being a teacher is dealing with the kind of ah entanglements that the kids have out of s school.
00:18:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:18:28
Joe Forrester
And I think there was a little bit of concern in the staff room, as we understand there was some kind of highly publicized breakup that Brentford went through um in the summer. And obviously, it's it's a little bit difficult to bounce back from that.
00:18:40
Joe Forrester
However, we have been pleasantly surprised. And we do think that that Thomas Frank is a very good influence on the group by and large, so we would advised them to maintain that relationship. um Look, obviously Brentford are kind of in the post Ivan Tony era. And that was always going to be the thing that governed their season. And I think when people kind of looked at ah where they might be aiming for, it took five or six league positions off what people might predict.
00:19:06
Joe Forrester
The reality is that their standout player has probably been Brian and Buemo, 13 goals and three assists, and Yo-M Whistle with 10 goals and two assists, really pitching in with the goals that they're lacking now through Tony. They sit 10th in the league. um To be honest, a for a pretty ah good performance from Brentford you say so far this season, as I say, kind of tipped to maybe be in that bottom half of the table and looking pretty solid in mid table. One disappointment would probably be ah Fabio Carvalho. Two goals and three assists in 20 games across all competitions and they paid 30 odd million quid. um
00:19:44
Joe Forrester
Yeah, a win there for Liverpool. But but yeah, ultimately ah Thomas Frank doing a good job. His kind of tactical acumen keeps shining through. a Lovely 5-0 win.
00:19:56
Joe Forrester
um for them as well in December. And yeah, do you know what? I'd give them a B. Sitting 10th, probably finished 10th, grade B.
00:20:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
Fair enough. ah Jesse Brighton.
00:20:10
Jesse
The definition of mid-table. They are literally 10th in the Premier League as we speak. I had a decent start under the new manager, Fabian Herzler, but they may be going through a bit of a sticky patch at the moment. Last six games, reads five draws, one defeat. So they need to get back to winning ways soon if they want to secure one of those European spots.
00:20:36
Jesse
Overall i think it's been ah a good season so far new manager they've had a few injuries to deal with well back has been out for a while jal pedro is out for a while but a word of caution for brighton they're well run club that you know they pride themselves on good recruitment, you know good business. They've got very little room for error and they can look to Southampton who not very long ago, under Pochettino and others, they were also very well run and yeah run as a very effective business with buying and selling their best players at the heart of that model. So in terms of a mid-term report, I'd say after making a bright start,
00:21:19
Jesse
They've taken their eye off the ball, maybe beginning to coast, no pun intended, and need to focus more this coming in year. So Brighton get a C plus and they can do better, kick up the back four. Position, I'd say ninth.
00:21:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Wow. Harsh. Harsh. Right. Kate, you seem to get all the... Above all, you get all the good teams. You've got Chelsea.
00:21:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
How how have you assessed Chelsea?
00:21:52
Cate
Oh gosh.
00:21:56
Cate
Yes, I have got all the good teams apart from Man United that you gave me. Thank you very much. e But we'll we'll come to that um a bit later on. So, look, Chelsea started really well. um Currently fourth in the table, obviously they've got 36 points. um and Everything was going really good until they suddenly had a dip in form, really, because they um literally, I don't know, they were disorganized. Cole Palmer, I think, wasn't being,
00:22:31
Cate
Fed the ball, you know, as often as you should be. And I think, um, I dunno, they just lack confidence really. So, um, they've got, they've had two points from the last 16, last 12, 12 points possibly, I should say.
00:22:39
Nick Britten
Thank you.
00:22:46
Cate
But in Europe, of course, they have looked pretty impressive. They got six wins from, from six. Um, and they're qualified now for the last 16, which is good. Um,
00:22:58
Cate
And I think they're pretty, pretty, they've got a pretty good chance of, of, um, lifting that trophy in May. So that is good. Had an early exit from the Carabar Cup, but you know, who's bothered about that? Um, they're playing lead two side more come on Saturday in the FA Cup. So they should walk that, which could give them another pathway to a cup. Um, so like I said, yes, like a consistency, um, that's letting them down. Um, and.
00:23:28
Cate
I don't think they've got a chance, but you know, top four is a great aim for them.
00:23:31
Jesse
Thank you.
00:23:33
Cate
And I think the they've done really well. Enzo Mareska, Breath of Fresh Air, obviously coming from Leicester. So I am giving Chelsea a B.
00:23:50
Cate
Yeah, I'm quite harsh, Jo, you know.
00:23:51
Joe Forrester
i
00:23:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
That is quite, I'm thinking again that's a little bit harsh.
00:23:52
Jesse
I think that's very harsh.
00:23:52
Joe Forrester
It's quite harsh,
00:23:55
Jesse
I think that's very harsh.
00:23:57
Joe Forrester
yeah.
00:23:57
Jesse
That's coming from me.
00:23:58
Joe Forrester
Couldn't happen to a nicer kid though.
00:24:00
Jesse
yeah
00:24:01
Cate
Yeah, I know. I just think, I think the the lack of consistency, you know, without that, you know, Liverpool, obviously Jesse would, would for me get a, get an A, you know what I mean?
00:24:15
Cate
That's, that's the sort of level you need to be to be getting an A in my book.
00:24:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mmm.
00:24:20
Cate
Or the championship, you know.
00:24:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's why she's head of discipline. That is why she's head of discipline. She does not take any message.
00:24:27
Cate
Joking on you.
00:24:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Right.
00:24:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
Is your old stamping ground, stomping ground, whatever it is, Nick, in South London? The Crystal Palace. What's so what's going on down there?

Crystal Palace to Forest: Mid-Season Reviews

00:24:40
Nick Britten
Well, fellow teachers, fellow teachers, I need your help here. And by the way, I say fellow teachers, as opposed to self-appointed board of governor who I don't recognise. So I don't need your input in this, thank you. ah Fellow teachers, I need your help. I would like to summon a Crystal Palace head boy Oliver Glazmer to the office because I think somebody needs a word with him because I'd like to know from Glazmer what on earth is going on they had a great second after last season everybody expected them to do well this season there was a great deal of optimism kicking off and it just simply hasn't happened now we saw Michael Elise leave in the summer ah which is obviously a big blow we also saw and this has kind of gone under the radar a little bit we saw Joachim Anderson go
00:25:24
Nick Britten
And all the talk was about Margahey going to to Newcastle. Anderson, in the end, almost as sort of ah lightweight in that deal, went to Fulham. But he was a really good player.
00:25:35
Nick Britten
He's one of those players who who's really understated and you miss him a lot more when he's gone than you realise at the time. And Palace's defence have never really recovered.
00:25:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you very much.
00:25:44
Nick Britten
Lacroix has come in and it hasn't quite been the same. So defensively they're not looking great. um Up top, you know, the goals just haven't come. 30 million pounds spent on Eddie and Kettier. Zero league goals. Yeah, Ezzie. Two goals.
00:26:04
Nick Britten
Mateta is leading the charts again, and thank goodness for the emergence of Ismaili Saar, who so started scoring goals in the recent period of Christmas games.
00:26:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you.
00:26:14
Nick Britten
But Paris fit 15th in the Premier League, and five points from safety. and I'm afraid that is not good enough. Okay. Thankfully there are there there are opportunistic signs here. So they've only lost one in six. They've beaten Brighton recently. That's always a, always buys a little bit of time, you know, always a bit of time. It's always a good win, but I'm afraid I'd like with your permission fellow teachers to summon Glasgow to the office, uh, because he's not doing well enough. He's going to get a grade E from me with a flea in his ear.
00:26:49
Nick Britten
He's got to go away and do better or punishment might not come from the Derby County slipper, but might come from the Steve Parish boot.
00:26:57
Cate
Oh, nice.
00:26:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
but Very well put, but very harsh. Well, that's what the chair of governor thinks. What does everybody else think about the hardships of that particular one?
00:27:05
Cate
I think they're not performing at the end of the day.
00:27:09
Joe Forrester
e
00:27:09
Cate
You can't soft soap these things. If they're not performing, there's no point in pretending they are. You know, I think that's pretty fair to be honest. They should be doing a heck of a lot better.
00:27:17
Joe Forrester
and And they were great at the end of last season, weren't they as well? So what's gone wrong?
00:27:22
Nick Britten
Well, there's a piece there few there's there's a few things. um but I think it's probably fair to say. That that they were in that little bit of sort of poor form ahead of ahead of a pickup in results They were actually playing pretty well.
00:27:22
Jesse
And they should be scoring more goals.
00:27:34
Nick Britten
They weren't playing badly. They just couldn't score the goals The disaster really has been in keti who they've spent a lot of money on they can't find the right position from the team They can't find the right play and what they've gone back to they've gone back to last season with motessa leading the line And we saw one side where at least they was and there's a the other side and that's led to a sort of a pickup I think in results, but
00:27:38
Jesse
you
00:27:41
Cate
And.
00:27:53
Nick Britten
but they just haven't kicked on the way I think everybody expects them to kick on Adam Wharton who made such a huge impact the back end of last season got himself in the England set up around the Euros just just sort of fallen away a little bit and and I've just you know Palace normally do quite well get to 40 points and then got to get on a beach this season it's the other way around they need to get to 40 points they do they need to get to 40 points because they can't risk getting sucked into this relegation battle I think they are a much better team than the league position says they are.
00:28:25
Jesse
And they should be scoring a lot more, they should be scoring more goals with the kind of attacking options they've got.
00:28:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
Very interesting.
00:28:28
Cate
Just tell them.
00:28:30
Jesse
Um, but I think you're right. He's smiley. So I think he could be the one that kind of, um, kick-starts things for them. Um, but, um, yeah, no, I, I agree with Nick's overall assessment.
00:28:44
Nick Britten
Thank you very much, Jesse.
00:28:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
queen
00:28:46
Nick Britten
That's the first thing we've agreed on in five podcast.
00:28:47
Jesse
Yeah.
00:28:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Why me? Something's going seriously wrong. Right. Okay. Number eight. Everton. Everton. What do you say about evert and Everton? Everton. I was about to summon Mr. Deitch and ask for an explanation as to the dreadful performance of this season.
00:29:04
Jesse
but probably still you know you'd get through now
00:29:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah
00:29:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
huh
00:29:07
Jesse
you probably could still like yeah
00:29:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah probably probably he's not he's probably a Nottingham uh in a polo shirt to be honest um so uh so but they've got an opportunity now because of course they're moving to the big school next year
00:29:09
Jesse
clear from now
00:29:11
Joe Forrester
ah ah 100%. 100%.
00:29:17
Cate
probably been there too much. That's why he's got been given the boot.
00:29:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
And they need to get their act together before they move to the big school. Now, I think, obviously, Mr. Deitch is now gone. I think we're going to end up with Mr. Moyes coming in. And Mr. Moyes is a safe pair of hands. He knows where the levers are. He knows who the troublemakers are. He knows who the people he can rely on are. He's going to keep order. There's going to be no tittering at the back.
00:29:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's going to bring a little bit of, I think, discipline ah to bear. I think that's what's going to be required. I think, clearly, new owners, they're unhappy. They want to make this change before the yeah the before the the big school next next year.
00:30:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
But Joe put his fingers on it earlier. They are a very dull watch, Everton.
00:30:18
Joe Forrester
Thank you.
00:30:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't know how much we've all seen of Everton, but it is not ah the great... It's it's like the equivalent of doing 100 lines for 90 minutes watching Everton.
00:30:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
Lowest XG in the Premier League, 15 goals in 19 games. As Joe was saying earlier, that's not going to take you anywhere. So something significant is going to have to change. And Mr Moyes, if it is Mr Moyes that comes in, is going to have to really instill that kind of passion, instill that kind of belief that they're going to need in order to escape. So we can only judge him, though,
00:30:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
on what's happened so far and what's happened so far has been desperately bad. It's always fairly bad at Everton, let's be honest. ah They always think they're going to be smart enough to be doctors, but they're only ever going to be medical technicians.
00:31:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
But they are still disappointing this season. So I'm afraid the report card says an E.
00:31:21
Joe Forrester
Thank you.
00:31:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
I do think with this with this new leadership, they're probably going to get out of special measures. They're probably going to escape relegation. Just, I think they're going to end up 16th. So that's my assessment of Everton. So here's an interesting one, Nick. The avid Derby fan. How do you think Forest are doing?
00:31:50
Nick Britten
Well, there's always one smart aleck in the class, isn't there, who suddenly surprises everyone absolutely out of nowhere. They've been lurking at the back of the classroom for two years, picking their nose, sticking gum under the table and annoying all the other kids. Suddenly, they find themselves in front of the class, getting all the answers right and leaving every other pupil a gog, mouth wide open, wondering what on earth has happened. Well, the posh kids have turned up,
00:32:20
Nick Britten
Chris Wood has happened, Morgan Gibbs-White has happened, Nicola Milankovic has happened, Alex Moreno has happened, Ilanga, Hudson Adoy, they've all piled in at the same time, and on it goes, even Ryan Yates, by the way, even Ryan Yates, who is the archetypal snot-ridden schoolboy bully in the back of the playground, is starting to look like an actual footballer.
00:32:34
Jesse
Thank you.
00:32:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you.
00:32:43
Nick Britten
And there you go, second in the Premier League, top of the sixth-game form league, It's come from nowhere. It's come from nowhere. And Nino Espirito Santo is a god ah in certain parts of the East Midlands. so but Not this part, obviously. But he's doing a fantastic job. He's doing a fantastic job. He's got the tactics right away from home. They've had brilliant wins.
00:33:07
Nick Britten
at so Liverpool, sorry jesse but they have and i know you're still moaning about it ah Manchester they broke Brentford's home form ah record this season. They look so good away from home.
00:33:21
Nick Britten
And now they're starting to look very, very good at home. and And they've got Liverpool next week. That's going to be a massive game. It's going to be such a good game. ah So Forest are doing brilliantly. And I think it's all down to the manager, finding the right players and putting them in the right positions and coming up with the right tactics. You can't believe that only seven months ago, knowing what we know now, people still want to see if Cooper back. So well done. Yeah. Well done to Forest. Will they win? Will they win the league? Nope.
00:33:47
Nick Britten
Will it get top four? Quite possibly. That fourth spot might just be theirs. Will Brian Clough still prefer Derby? Yes, of course. We know. The half-time report is very positive. A magnificent effort. Well done, the tricky trees. Keep up the good work. Here's a lollipop or two and a big fat hay star.
00:34:09
Cate
Wow.
00:34:10
Joe Forrester
Nick, you love to see it though, don't you?
00:34:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Very good.
00:34:13
Joe Forrester
Because a massive club, by far the biggest club in the region, by far. um Great fan base, likeable club. it must be It's just great to see, isn't it?
00:34:21
Nick Britten
I know I go every Saturday. I know we're in the carapace here. Things will get better eventually.
00:34:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
Right, moving swiftly on. ah And this brings us to the 10th team in the yeah in the league. We're going to Fulham. Fulham is yours, Joe.
00:34:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
um How are things going down at Craven Cottage?
00:34:39
Joe Forrester
yeah
00:34:42
Joe Forrester
Look, we all know that the Premier League can be a pretty rough school, so it is sometimes a bit of a surprise that we do have such a likeable posh lad in there in Fulham. They're basically just will from the in-betweeners, aren't they? Kind of just bumbling their way along. Everybody likes them. um Quite amusing, quite good fun. Do

Ipswich to Newcastle: Insights and Predictions

00:34:59
Joe Forrester
you know what?
00:34:59
Joe Forrester
Not too bad so far. I think everybody was kind of hoping for for big things from Marco Silva's team this year, and they've looked pretty decent. That being said, and I'll get onto to this later, they're currently sitting at ninth in the Premier League, which I feel is a little bit of an underperformance given where they thought they might be.
00:35:16
Joe Forrester
um In terms of standout players, Raul Jimenez with eight goals, Anthony Robinson with seven assists, Alex Awobi's got five goals, three assists as well, Harry Wilson with five goals. So the goals are coming from everywhere, as we know, kind of silver likes to play that attacking brand of football. um But the results really are up and down. They're very capable of losing against teams that you feel like they should comfortably beat. So, for example, Wolves, but then again, of course, standout moment of their school year so far, of course, is the two-one away win on Boxing Day at Chelsea. So very, very hard to predict. um In terms of pupils who've disappointed us, ah probably say Rodrigo Muniz, so great last year, um kind of making up for, and the idea was that he was going to make up for Lacan Mitrovic this season. um However, he's managed just three goals and one assist in 19 appearances.
00:36:05
Joe Forrester
And while Fulham are getting goals, 30 so far in the Premier League this season, you would hope to see them get a little bit more. And if Moonis can relocate his scoring boots from under his bed somewhere, then you would like to think that that would help them. um Ultimately, to be honest, I kind of, in in my little self-predictions at the start of the season, I kind of had high hopes for them and thought maybe seventh or eighth. Currently, as I said, sitting in ninth.
00:36:33
Joe Forrester
so ever so slightly underperforming as far as I'm concerned, it's a B- for Fulham.
00:36:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
Makes a lot of sense. Now, so that's 10 teams, doing 10 teams to go, but here at Global Sports Podcast Network, we spend a lot of time not only grading these teams, but selecting our delivery platform and Zencaster came out the clear winner of that little competition with 4K video recording from your phone and AI editing that automatically removes all those ums and r's. You won't have heard any of those on this particular episode. It's super easy to start a podcast that sounds great and is delivered efficiently. So if you're ready to tell your story, just like we were, check out the link that's in the show notes to learn out to learn more about Zencaster. Right, okay. So,
00:37:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
Ipswich, we're off to East Anglia with Jesse Sauer.
00:37:32
Jesse
a
00:37:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
How are things support Monroe?
00:37:36
Jesse
Relegation candidates, since they were promoted, really, they've come up with a good young, you know, progressive coach Kieran McKenna, um theyve obviously had a tough time in the Premier League, but then they get a massive win against Chelsea and follow that up with a ah really hard-earned draw against Fulham, which you know, really showed their fight and they their commitment. um I think that they've got probably the best chance out of that bottom three to get out of trouble. ah One of the reasons being Liam Dilapp, good, strong physical striker, absolutely ideal ah for the Premier League. And, you know, I just think he gives Ipswich that chance to maybe survive the drop.
00:38:23
Jesse
I can't be too harsh on them. I tip them to go straight down. um And they're only doing what I expected them to do. So if I was writing out a report card, I'd say recently moved up a set that seemed to be struggling to keep up with everyone else. Have made improvements recently, but a long way to go to get to where they need to be. Grade a D. Position 18. Sorry.
00:38:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
Sounds very fair, Mr. Sarwar. Right, Leicester City. ah The decision to replace earlier in the season, the old haggard, scarred woodwork teacher, Mr.
00:39:06
Jesse
Okay.
00:39:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
Cooper, ah seemed to be paying dividends. ah They cast their net widely and brought in the new
00:39:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
language teacher Mr Van Nistelroy to steady the ship to take things in a completely different direction and that promised an improvement in standards particularly in homework I thought but unfortunately that seems to have been something of a flash in the pan and the old sloppiness the old silly mistakes have started to reappear in their coursework. And Mr Van Nistelroy, having initially put a bit of a stop to that, they're starting to reappear. And because Mr Van Nistelroy comes from
00:40:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
the front, if you like, of the of the team, the attacking third of the team, clearly. I'm not sure his focus is on the area which is going to be a continuing problem for Leicester.
00:40:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
So there are some bright spots. Buonenote, I think is an excellent play. He's not theirs, of course, but he's is is contributing well.
00:40:23
Joe Forrester
Thank you.
00:40:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
But always you feel with Leicester there's There's a mistake around the corner. You know you're going to turn over the paper. There's going to be inkblots all over it, blue ones. And so you have to think that unless they really pull their sleeves up and pull their socks up,
00:40:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
and pull their pants up, they are going to struggle for the rest of the season. I think we all thought it would be a struggle for them coming up to the new school and being given much more stringent tests than they've ever had before.
00:41:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
But even so, it's clear to see that they are not going to make the grades.
00:41:05
Joe Forrester
Thank you.
00:41:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
My graded assessment for Leicester is a D-minus. I think my prediction for them for the rest of the season is 19th.
00:41:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
And it's goodbye to Leicester as the only other East Midlands team in the Premier League and the Qatari are going to make it. It's going to be forest on their own.
00:41:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
So that sir that's So moving on. at
00:41:38
Nick Britten
Sorry, can i just can I just raise a point here for our listeners here?
00:41:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:41:42
Nick Britten
and I'm slightly alarmed that the chair of governors, the self-appointed chair of governors is coming from nowhere, ah starts talking about our pupils pulling their pants up. I don't think we run that kind of school anymore.
00:41:52
Cate
Yes. How does he know that? That's what I wanna know.
00:41:55
Jesse
Any more?
00:41:55
Joe Forrester
Yeah.
00:41:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
I borrowed your Slepper.
00:42:02
Nick Britten
I thought we were grading these teams A to F. hey If we're grading them A to F, and Lester is second from bottom, I haven't lost all their games recently, how do they only get a D?
00:42:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well only because I think everybody knew they were going to be poor or everybody expected they were going to be poor.
00:42:14
Nick Britten
i gonna have to give i'm gonna ask you if If you're giving Lester a D, I'm going to have to up my palace grade to a C-minus.
00:42:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I thought you were very harsh on Palace Thursday, but there you are. But, you know, that's why I'm not a teacher. That's why I'm chair of governance. I've got a slightly more kind of holistic opinion and view on it.
00:42:28
Nick Britten
Well, you're the only one who thinks he is chair of governance, but anyway, on you
00:42:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
OK, moving on.
00:42:32
Cate
janitor isn't it
00:42:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
I can see Jesse Sauer with a great big grin on his face because.
00:42:33
Cate
um
00:42:36
Nick Britten
Do we have to do this?
00:42:38
Joe Forrester
Oh, should we go and put the cattle on everyone?
00:42:38
Jesse
ah
00:42:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah
00:42:39
Nick Britten
Yeah, we'll come back in an hour.
00:42:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I think you should. Yeah, let's make this a quick one. How Liverpool doing?
00:42:42
Jesse
hello um Hold up.
00:42:45
Nick Britten
Always frozen.
00:42:50
Jesse
Yeah, go ahead.
00:42:50
Cate
i don't think I don't think people should have done their own teams, actually.
00:42:51
Nick Britten
Somebody unpacked his mic.
00:42:53
Cate
I think it would have been more objective
00:42:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Um, yes.
00:42:57
Nick Britten
Right, come on Jesse, you've got 60 seconds left. Get on with it.
00:43:02
Jesse
What can I say? I mean, it's been a ah good start to the season. um You know, we're top of the Premier League, we're top of the Champions League, one foot in the Carabao Cup final um with the obviously, yeah you know, the second leg against Spurs coming up. um Look, everyone predicted a drop off.
00:43:21
Jesse
ah for liverpool ah with what I consider, quite frankly, a very tired, very lazy narrative of, look what happened to Manchester United after Ferguson left. But, you know, the irony is is that all the reasons that people like Gary Neville gave us to why United have been unsuccessful since Ferguson left the club, are the very reasons that made it unlikely that we were going to drop off. um You know, we've got a sporting director, we've got a ah very well respected recruitment team. ah There's no scatter gun approach in terms of buying and selling players. And I think it's reflected in the way that Slott has taken over from Klopp. You know, he can manage Klopp's players. And when Slott goes,
00:44:08
Jesse
whoever we take take on, they'll be able to manage um slots, players. So continuity.
00:44:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh gosh.
00:44:17
Jesse
Sorry, Sean Dyche, absolutely, yeah. yeah
00:44:18
Cate
No, it'd be somebody that rhymes with pop. We've had clop and slot. So it's probably like plop next or somebody like that.
00:44:24
Jesse
Yeah, well, hopefully not.
00:44:25
Cate
know
00:44:26
Jesse
Hopefully not, because then we are in trouble. So in terms of ah a report card for Liverpool so far this season, I'd say new kid on the block, Arnie Slott has done very well to fit in into his new surroundings.
00:44:41
Jesse
He's immediately won the respect of the seniors around him and you know and they've been there those seniors that have been there for a long time and he's rallied everyone to the extent that even the school bully whose dad lives in Abu Dhabi is now a quiveral wreck. So full marks I'm giving Liverpool an A. He just needs to help that young Darwin find that barn door every now and again and the 11A star.
00:45:11
Jesse
and position, I've got to say one.
00:45:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't think any of us would disagree with any of that, Jesse, to be honest. Right. ah Joe Forrester.
00:45:20
Jesse
um
00:45:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mmm. Man City. That's an interesting report card. What what you've got on there?
00:45:28
Joe Forrester
Yeah, well, I'm i'm glad Mr. Sawa mentioned ah the parents, because obviously it's impossible to to think about this child without thinking about um the family. like I mean, look, they're the rich kid whose' whose parents are a bit dodgy, and they now have got a few legal problems. I mean, boohoo. To be honest. Yeah, so City, obviously, it's been a dicey season for them, kind of as dicey as it ever gets. They're currently sitting at six in the Premier League. um Little upswing in form, of course, as we know,
00:45:58
Joe Forrester
ah It's really interesting if you kind of look at their goal scorers. So Erling Haaland has scored 16 goals this season, which is as many as all the other city goal scorers combined. So in a way, Pep Guardiola is a real innovator. In a way, we've kind of gone back to late 90s football and it's hit the target man because without Haaland, there are no goals. Their second top goal scorer is Yosco Vardio with four goals. In terms of disappointments,
00:46:26
Joe Forrester
um I think we all had high hopes for kind of likeable little cheeky chappy Phil Foden, the reigning Premier League player of the season. But it really hasn't happened for him this year, as many yellow cards as he does goals with only two goals and one assist in 19 games.
00:46:43
Joe Forrester
um Obviously, a slight concerns I think, as as Ken said, from that holistic point of view, which obviously we're very big at at this school over Mr.
00:46:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you.
00:46:52
Joe Forrester
Guardiola's behaviour at times, this season slightly seems to be taking it all a little bit too seriously. For example, squaring up to to cheeky Liverpool fans outside hotels and that kind of thing. But ultimately, let's face it, this is City. It's a very expensively assembled team with some fantastic players on the bench. It's worth saying that ah Jack Grealish has one assist and three yellow cards this season.
00:47:17
Joe Forrester
so despite the fact that there are some huge disappointments, there's still an abundance of talent in there. um They battered West Ham in December, maybe that's kind of green shoots of recovery. At the end of the day, they probably will still finish in the top four, because this is Man City we're talking about. They probably won't have enough to catch Liverpool, but you never know. But ultimately, at the moment, given their very, very high standards, I would give them a D.
00:47:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mmm. I think that's very fair. Anybody else got any comments on the Man City grade?
00:47:54
Nick Britten
only that Only that they would, I think they've got a real challenge to get in the top four. I think it's actually going to be very hard for them. and Liverpool are ensconced at the top.
00:48:04
Nick Britten
You've got Chelsea and Arsenal who are there. You've got Forrest who are on form, who will challenge. You've got Newcastle who have really come up on the rails. I think Man City might have fallen a little bit too far behind.
00:48:17
Nick Britten
I don't think we're going to see that long unbeaten run that they're going to have to have if they're going to break into that top four.
00:48:22
Joe Forrester
That was my only rationale, just go just being very lazy and just thinking, well, they always have a period where they win 15 in a row.
00:48:29
Nick Britten
Yeah, but let's say bye.
00:48:30
Nick Britten
They don't have the team to do that anymore.
00:48:30
Joe Forrester
Yeah, yeah, yeah, it's very true.
00:48:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
so So they've lost the fear factor a little bit, haven't they? you and Teams do this.
00:48:37
Joe Forrester
Definitely.
00:48:37
Cate
And.
00:48:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
United lost the fear factor.
00:48:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
The school bully just you're taking a few cracks to the jaw and suddenly people aren't quite as scared of him anymore. Is that going to dog them for the rest of the season, do we think?
00:48:53
Joe Forrester
Ken, do you know what, once you see behind that curtain and you see that the Wizard of Oz is just ah just a sad, scared little man, then suddenly anything's possible.
00:49:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
yes That's me.
00:49:02
Nick Britten
but where
00:49:03
Joe Forrester
I didn't mean you, Mr.
00:49:03
Nick Britten
Mr. Forrester, where have you pulled that from?
00:49:05
Joe Forrester
Governor.
00:49:06
Jesse
yeah
00:49:06
Joe Forrester
ah Sorry, I didn't mean you.
00:49:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
a
00:49:09
Nick Britten
It's like he pulls his pants up.
00:49:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
and Yeah.
00:49:12
Cate
God, don't.
00:49:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I am actually sitting behind a green screen at the moment. So, okay. So that's about it. We all agree with that, Kate. Manchester you not United.
00:49:23
Cate
Yeah, there's only one United and it's not Manchester. Um, that'd be Leeds. So yeah, thanks for this. Um, as a Leeds supporter, pardon.
00:49:31
Nick Britten
I'm glad you have to clarify that, by the way, just in case nobody had heard of them.
00:49:36
Cate
Yeah, thanks for that. As a lead supporter, I've got to give him an F and then we'll move on, right? No, I'm joking.
00:49:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
well No.
00:49:42
Cate
I'm joking. I'm joking.
00:49:44
Jesse
But surely it should be.
00:49:44
Cate
um Pardon?
00:49:45
Jesse
ah You're not joking. It should be, F.
00:49:48
Cate
No, let me, let me, is I'm not going to give him an F. So the first thing that came into my mind I was thinking about Man United is basket case.
00:50:00
Cate
I think they're just a basket case club at the moment.
00:50:04
Joe Forrester
Woo
00:50:04
Cate
They're currently in their lowest Premier League position since 1989, and that is 14th, you know, which is four more formal positions and they they might be joining Derby in the Championship next year.
00:50:07
Joe Forrester
-hoo!
00:50:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
and Rexxum.
00:50:21
Cate
but yeah Oh, yeah. And Rexham. That'd be good, wouldn't it?
00:50:24
Nick Britten
i'll be quite glad I'll be quite glad if Derby are in the chamois ship next year, by the way.
00:50:27
Joe Forrester
Yeah.
00:50:27
Nick Britten
Don't think that's an insult.
00:50:29
Cate
I think everybody thought that Cameron was going to be a quick fix um over at United when he came, obviously in November, but that hasn't happened. And I think basically you've got players um at the club who who think they're bigger than the club um and who who aren't engaged. um Like, for example, um mar ah Marcus Ratchford, who could still possibly ah leave. I heard today that he's um ham ah West Ham are interested in in him.
00:50:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Be that.
00:50:58
Cate
So I think that'd be a good thing, to be honest. And I think they've got their eyes on Victor Jokaris, who was at Coventry. Leeds tried to get him last season, but he went to sport in Lisbon instead.
00:51:11
Cate
I don't blame him. but um So that they need a ah clear goal scorer, basically. um And as a result of not having one, they're doing really, really badly. There's also that the fans aren't happy with um Jim Ratcliffe at the moment. They've put a flat ticket fee out of 66 quid. um that They've done away with child tickets and concessions and everybody's really like miffed about that. um So to be honest, I'm being very generous here, but I'm going to give them an E at the moment.
00:51:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
i think that's I think that's fair.
00:51:51
Jesse
No, it should be it's got to be F.
00:51:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
Anybody else got?
00:51:53
Jesse
It's got to be an F. There's been an absolute disaster this season. And bear in mind, it's not it's not since Amorim came in. I've actually, I've got a lot of sympathy for Amorim.
00:52:04
Cate
Yeah, me too.
00:52:04
Jesse
I don't think that you can be a manager. If they brought a manager in that was a 4-3-3 manager that played a relatively similar style to Ten Hogg. Now I think you could be more critical of him, but he's coming in with a radically different um set of principles and a playing style.
00:52:20
Cate
Yeah.
00:52:22
Jesse
And to bring him in midway through the season, ah you can't expect anything from him. But from the start of the season, they invested still a lot of money on a lot on, you know, Xerxes, I think, you know, they spent a lot of money
00:52:35
Cate
who Who might be going as well?
00:52:38
Jesse
he might be going.
00:52:38
Cate
Isn't it Jonathan Zierke? Yeah, they they want him gone, I think.
00:52:41
Jesse
But in terms of you if you look around the players that they've got, they they should not be anywhere near where they are right now. And, um you know, you you meant so mentioned Marcus Rashford, and this is one of the players ah problems with Manchester United.
00:52:56
Jesse
Marcus Rashford thinks that he is a player good enough to play for Manchester United. Well, look at the clubs that are in for him. Look at the clubs that are in for him. Just, you know, West Ham.
00:53:07
Jesse
And that's one link. But apparently last summer, they couldn't, they couldn't sell him.
00:53:12
Cate
I couldn't get rid.
00:53:12
Jesse
No one would come in for him. Yeah. So I think that you're being very generous.
00:53:14
Cate
Yeah.
00:53:17
Jesse
For me, it's enough.
00:53:17
Cate
I do think though that a lot of their problems stem from the fact that they didn't get rid of Tenharg in the summer.
00:53:25
Jesse
Yeah, agreed.
00:53:25
Cate
and and start the sort of rebuild from then. And it's just sort of festered, hasn't it, all or season. And they're just an absolute basket case at the moment. So, yeah. But the positive being Jesse, which is probably why I gave them an E, that, you know, they brought Amer in him, but he he needs he needs the tools to work with and he hasn't got them at the moment. and
00:53:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
Right, okay, interesting. So, interesting case this, Nick, um coming up to you, Newcastle, I mean, you've got connections there. So, what's your view on things in Newcastle?
00:54:03
Nick Britten
Well, they're a lovely pupil, aren't they? They're a lovely pupil in Newcastle, Eddie Howe, lovely, lovely Eddie Howe.
00:54:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
Everybody's favourite little beautiful.
00:54:09
Nick Britten
He's so sweet, he's so nice.
00:54:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
Milk monitor.
00:54:13
Nick Britten
Melt monitor extraordinaire, butter, wooden melt, bless him. Yet it all looked, it all looked not that long ago that it was all going south. There were even fans calling for his head, and I include an out my brother-in-law in all of that.
00:54:28
Nick Britten
But what a turnaround. What a turnaround since the rather pathetic defeat to Brentford at the GTEC at the start of December. There's been a very well publicised sort of get together. There were strong words and honest words set in the dressing room after that. There's been a lot of media around that, but it's done the job.
00:54:44
Nick Britten
done the job, five league games, one on the spin, one foot in the league cup final after a comprehensive win at Arsenal this week, silverware is beckoning for the first time since the late 1960s. So how has this happened? Literally how has this happened ah in a short space of time? Well, Alexander Isak is a key to this. He is now fit after having a spell on the sidelines earlier in the season and he can't stop scoring um and he's now he's currently I would say the most feared striker in the league 13 goals he's still five behind Salah and three behind Ireland but I would say right here right now he is the top striker in the league ah but there's been a really clever tactical switch here I think from Eddie Howe and that is giving a regular spot on the right hand side for Jacob Murphy
00:55:31
Nick Britten
who I've always been a big fan of, and but he's come into the team now on a regular basis and he's given Newcastle's attack. much added emphasis. And as of as things stand, he now sits right at the top of the assist table for Newcastle with seven assists. So that's really impressive. um At the back, Lewis Hall has been a revelation at full back. He's played really well. And even recently, even Dan Byrne, big old Dan Byrne, you know him, like the Bash Street kids, the big lad at the top, 18 foot tall, wear shorts, cap, teeth sticking out, what a player.
00:56:04
Nick Britten
He looked like he might have been on the decline but he suddenly had a real renaissance in the last few games and he's been putting in some proper old-school centre-half performances and suddenly Newcastle were right on the up. So after looking like their season might be might be drifting harmlessly down the time to the North Sea, is Champions League football back on for the Toon army?
00:56:27
Nick Britten
You bet it is. You bet it is. But there is a caveat here because January is going to be an important month for them. And this is where I worry slightly because they need another striker because if his act gets injured again, they're left without a striker as they were earlier on the season. Anthony Gordon had to fill in in a nine. Didn't really work. Wasn't really happening.
00:56:46
Nick Britten
They've indicated, edies Eddie is indicated through talking to us here in the headmaster's office, ah that so unless we give him some cash, he hasn't got a lot to spend. So maybe outgoings have to happen before they buy, but they desperately, desperately need a striker. If they can get one in, Champions League football is a real reality. If they can't, it puts a little bit of jeopardy. The season has been a bit of up and down, a bit of down and up, but at the half-season point, Eddie, I'm going to give you a big, fat, sweet A, you lovely, lovely young man.
00:57:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
o Any thoughts?
00:57:21
Cate
Love that.
00:57:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
A little generous, I think, from my perspective.
00:57:22
Cate
I agree. I agree with that.
00:57:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
Maybe a B from me. or and Anybody else got any thoughts on that one before we move on?
00:57:29
Cate
I'd go with definitely an A.
00:57:31
Joe Forrester
Yeah, fair enough.
00:57:31
Cate
Yeah. I love watching them.
00:57:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
Fair enough.
00:57:33
Cate
Yeah.
00:57:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Okay, Jesse, Southampton. How do you grade Southampton?

Southampton to Wolves: Managerial Impacts

00:57:40
Jesse
Oh, when the Saints go marching in to the championship. i Southampton, Southampton, Southampton. What can you say? One of the biggest acts of week in, week out footballing suicide that I've ever seen in the Premier League.
00:57:58
Jesse
I know that Derby hold the record for the lowest points record with 11. Was that the trophy there, Nick, that you had there?
00:58:07
Nick Britten
but but
00:58:09
Jesse
There it is.
00:58:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
I thought that was something else.
00:58:12
Jesse
Saints
00:58:14
Jesse
Saints are on six points after 20 games. Can they get another, you know, a few points to get to 11 or 12? Look, Russell Martin, honestly, I really don't respect managers like him. Extreme ideologues who show, that you know, they don't show any care for the fortunes of their club. The only thing that matters is not being flexible and having a kind of my way or highway attitude.
00:58:41
Jesse
ah yeah He's probably seen Vincent company being unmitigated disaster at Burnley end up at buying Munich. so he's you know He's probably waiting for a call from the Burnabout any minute. um so In terms of a report card, I'd say Need to show more flexibility and a willingness to learn and listen. Never seems to pay attention and head always in the clouds. For this half term, they've suffered from borderline delusion in terms of what can be achieved. Maybe too late to pull it back this year, but signs that lessons may be learned for next term. Grade and unclassified.
00:59:23
Cate
What about the new guy?
00:59:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's not a great, he's he's not a great appointment, is he? we've The guy from from Italy that's spent all his time, I'm not not sure he's gonna pull things around.
00:59:35
Cate
yeah
00:59:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
Anybody else got a view on that?
00:59:36
Cate
Couldn't happen to a nicer club.
00:59:36
Nick Britten
but can well could i Can I just could i say from ah ah ah every single Derby County fans' perspective, we really hope the Southampton get more than 11 points because ah we're very proud, we are very proud of our 11-point record.
00:59:50
Nick Britten
It still keeps us relevant in modern football and and it's one of those things that we don't want anybody to beat, thank you very much.
00:59:52
Joe Forrester
Hmm.
00:59:56
Nick Britten
So I'm rooting for the new guy, I'm hoping they pick up a few wins and get to 12 points somehow.
01:00:02
Jesse
But in in in many ways, Nick, you can always forgive Derby because Derby were terrible. But the way that set Southampton played, they just gave points away. They just gave goals away.
01:00:12
Nick Britten
I completely agree with your assessment.
01:00:13
Jesse
yeah right
01:00:15
Nick Britten
I think you've absolutely spawned. it was It was just footballing suicide. And I totally agree with your assessment of Russell Martin. And yeah one of these managers, and you do see them you know these days, who just will stick to...
01:00:27
Nick Britten
He's just got such an ego that he will stick to what he's doing, even though it fails week after week after week. Can you get what you deserve?
01:00:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
Right, we better move on. Because talking about managers that fail week after week after week, ah we're off to Spurs.
01:00:36
Jesse
So.
01:00:38
Joe Forrester
Oh, come on.
01:00:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
And Joe Forrester, who of course runs the Daily Spurs podcast on GSPN, so he knows all about this. So what's the yeah what's the grade?
01:00:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
What's the temperature? What's the what's the vision?
01:00:54
Joe Forrester
Well, look, I hate to say it, and it's kind of one of those old cliches to write in a school report, but sometimes you have to so that the parents really take it on board. um Top number of the class clowns, aren't they? They really are. um It's Yeah, it's I'm sure for everybody else, it's been an incredibly amusing season.
01:01:14
Joe Forrester
For Spurs fans, it's been teeth-pullingly painful and baffling at times.
01:01:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh sorry, I laughed out loud though.
01:01:24
Joe Forrester
Jesse kind of talking about those inflexible ideologues. And I just had i just had that picture of a sour-faced Anj posta coglio in his big coat glaring from the touchline.
01:01:35
Joe Forrester
And yeah, look, do you know what? Tottenham are currently 12th in the Premier League, which really puts into perspective because there's a part of me that kind of thought, oh, third, fourth at Christmas, on track for Champions League football.
01:01:46
Joe Forrester
very nice, kind of be top of our Europa League group. um None of those things are true. So yeah, very, very disappointing ah season so far for Spurs. If you look at your standout players, um offensively, of course, there are good things happening. Eight goals for Madison with four assists, seven goals for Brennan Johnson, ah seven for Solanki, five goals for Kulesevsky and four assists. And I think his form has been kind of a ah revelation this season as well. um In terms of disappointments, despite having five goals and and six ah goal assist to his name. Sun Hyung Min probably set some very high standards for himself, doesn't quite look the player that we know he can be. It's really kind of coming home to roost the the value of that partnership that he had with Harry Kane and how much he relied on Harry Kane and this Spurs play a different way and I think it's just frustrating to see a player who everybody knows has a higher level maybe not be there. Posse Koglu has
01:02:45
Joe Forrester
I mean, he's not covered himself in glory in the last few weeks. But that being said, despite all the belligerents and ranting and raving and kind of having the vibe of a guy in a corner of a pub, it's like, oh, God, I got stuck talking to Ange last night.
01:02:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you.
01:02:59
Joe Forrester
He's that bloke at the moment. But he has actually, under the radar, showed a little bit of tactical flexibility. um And in Tottenham's barnstorming 1-0 demolition of Liverpool ah on Wednesday night,
01:03:14
Joe Forrester
he actually was a little bit more defensive and held the full backs back and the midfield sat a little bit deeper, which I kind of thought something must be very wrong at the start of the game. But that that maybe is him showing a little bit flexibility. Because as Jesse said, maybe it's time for him to realize that there are larger things at hand than your ideology when preserving the fortunes of your club. Like, look, one one of the only things that keeps this grade from being rock bottom is the fact that Spurs have had a pretty rotten injury crisis.
01:03:44
Joe Forrester
um no recognised centre backs at the club currently and there haven't been, well there's Radi Dragas in but he went off against Newcastle so there was two right black ah bright backs playing at centre half and that's been a perennial problem, I'm supposed to be hit by injuries, sickness bugs, all this kind of thing and that is the only thing that stops it from being a rock bottom grade as I said but but look, um they really need to buck their ideas up if they still want to want to be part of this educational institution at the end of the season and at the moment they're sitting on a D.
01:04:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
So I mean, you can even talk to me more.
01:04:16
Jesse
Quite harsh, I think.
01:04:18
Joe Forrester
yeah
01:04:18
Jesse
yes yeah i I think a C, because the injury crisis at Tottenham has been so, so big.
01:04:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
Ash book fair.
01:04:24
Joe Forrester
Yeah?
01:04:28
Jesse
um And look, you know, at the end of the day, Spurs, they got to a semi-final, you know.
01:04:35
Joe Forrester
but Well, they might get to a final still. I i know what you're doing there.
01:04:37
Jesse
um it
01:04:38
Joe Forrester
that's like Yeah, he darre he tried to dare and brown me.
01:04:39
Nick Britten
but Don't try those mind games, Jesse. I think a question to ask, talking about the suppose injury list, a question to ask is how much of this is self-inflicted?
01:04:48
Jesse
Yeah.
01:04:49
Nick Britten
How much, if Van de Ven particularly, he's an unbelievable athlete, he's incredibly quick, but the pressure and the strain on his hamstrings caused by angiball and this you know desire up and down, up and down, up and down, yeah know how much is self-inflicted and how much do you kind of have to take responsibility for that as a manager?
01:05:06
Joe Forrester
Well, the problem is the entire the entire system is predicated on having the fastest player in the league playing centre half for you, which long-term isn't a viable option, I would say, which is nice to see him that he he's decided he does want to keep his job. And he looks like he may have gone a little bit more pragmatic because who knows if we can be pragmatic when we need to be, then we'll be an infinitely better side. But yeah, I'll believe it when I see it. It's a D.
01:05:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
So that's it that's a D for West, for Tottenham and probably very well deserved.
01:05:35
Jesse
Okay.
01:05:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
So West Ham, I've got West Ham. Again, there was promise six months ago, just six months ago, ah when new head of humanities came in, Mr Lappetige.
01:05:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
promised a great deal, promised a vision, a world vision, a vision of flair, a vision of creativity, and a vision of passion. But that really, things never gelled. Him and his pupils never connected in the kind of way that a teacher and the pupils have got to come together.
01:06:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
to move everybody forward. And what we see now is, of course, he's gone on to Pastures New, or will eventually go on to Pastures New, he's going to be replaced, he's been replaced by the science teacher, Mr Potter.
01:06:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mr. Potter. It still, it sounds more appropriate, doesn't it? Hello, Mr. Potter, rather than hello, Mr. Lopetige. It's got a solidity to it that I think is gonna be required. I think the parents are gonna be happy under Mr. Potter's tutelage. Ex of Chelsea College, of course, fairly recently. But now that's ah at the London Academy.
01:07:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Now, Mr Potter's got a job to do, though, because he's got to set a standard that is a little bit higher than Mr Lopetakey was able to bring about. The confidence he's shot You know, they keep getting these tests, they keep failing these tests. to keep that The revision isn't strong enough. So that's why we need to bring in Mr. Science teacher, Mr. Potter, go back to basics, build themselves up again. ah Another team where the parents maybe have got higher expectations than the actual capability of the pupil. And I think that's gonna have to be managed to a certain degree as well.

Global Sports Podcast Network
talk of Mr Rashford coming in it and maybe adding a little bit of strength and a few more goals to the game. Kind of Rashford's place I think, I think that would be a probably a ah good move for both parties but I think they're going to be fine.
01:08:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think they're going to end up probably 13th, 12th, pretty similar to where they are now. I think Mr. Potter's going to instill a little bit more discipline, a little bit more savvy into that team.
01:08:18
Joe Forrester
Thank you.
01:08:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah But where are they today? Well, certainly perennial underachievers, nothing's changed on that. I didn't have massively high expectations of them anyway.
01:08:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
So I'm giving them a C. Any thoughts? Fair or unfair?
01:08:44
Joe Forrester
Mm.
01:08:44
Jesse
I think a D, but
01:08:45
Nick Britten
I think, ah yeah, I thought D, I thought D would be more realistic. I think they've massively underperformed this season.
01:08:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
01:08:51
Jesse
also I do want to say that I genuinely, genuinely want West Ham to get relegated.
01:08:59
Joe Forrester
Me too.
01:09:00
Jesse
I want them to get relegated. No, let me explain why.
01:09:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
Why? Why?
01:09:03
Jesse
Let me explain why. I think they've got one of the worst fan bases in football in the sense that They had David Moyes. And yes, I know you want to play free-flowing football. i know I know you think that you're like some kind of Barcelona knockoff for the ah for the Premier League. But he gave you top 10 Premier League finishes. He gave you memorable cup runs.
01:09:30
Jesse
He gave you a European trophy and they were still calling Moyes out. They were still chanting Moyes out. So just for that reason alone, I would love to see West Ham get relegated and just keep dropping down and then long for the days of David Moyes.
01:09:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you.
01:09:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
We'll just get off the fence, Jesse. OK, OK, so right, so that's where we are in West Ham. That brings us to the 20th team.
01:09:59
Nick Britten
but no
01:10:01
Nick Britten
I'm not sure teachers should harbour such ill thoughts about any of our pupils.
01:10:01
Cate
d
01:10:04
Cate
No, me too.
01:10:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, yeah, it's been noted in the in the governor's office, right?
01:10:08
Cate
In the Gibbons report.
01:10:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
So Kate Wolves, your final to 20th of the 20. So what's your thoughts on Wolves? What grade are you going to give them?
01:10:18
Cate
Okay. So I think under Gary O'Neill, of course, they were clearly struggling. They won two out of 16 games and obviously the morale amongst, amongst, uh, world players and the fans, it was dreadful. Um, clearly heading towards relegation. Um, and they're now a fourth, I think, uh, joint fourth on goal difference with, um, Ipswich.
01:10:43
Cate
um But then they appoint um Vitor Pereira in December and they are literally a different team.
01:10:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
head of Portuguese head of Portuguese because they all speak Portuguese don't
01:10:53
Cate
Pardon?
01:10:56
Cate
Oh, yeah. Yeah. Of course. Head of Portuguese. Absolutely. Yeah. Came in as a substitute teacher in December. Um, and they are a different team. They've got energy. They've got fresh ideas of playing. They're playing three at the back now, which seems to really suit them, especially with Matt, Matt, Matt, notice, uh, moved from a, um, a wing back position. Um, and the fans of, of kind of.
01:11:22
Cate
you know, rallied around them and the results are reflected it, you know, they they'd be Leicester Man United and they drew against Spurs. Joe, I'm sure you remember that.
01:11:31
Joe Forrester
Mm hmm.
01:11:33
Cate
They're more compact, there's no glaring gaps between um midfield and attack, which there was before. um And they lost 3-0 at Forest last week.
01:11:44
Cate
and last weekend, but I think, you know, Forrester on Fire at the moment. And I think overall, they're more organized and more positive, playing with confidence. And I really like the way that they are, you know, going at the moment and I really hope they stay up. I really want them to stay up. but I don't want, they don't deserve to go down, really. I think, I think Gary O'Neill was a, wasn't a great manager, to be honest with you.
01:12:12
Cate
So I'm going to give them a C plus.
01:12:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
Fair.
01:12:19
Nick Britten
Yeah, I don't think there's any way wolves are going to go down.
01:12:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
No. They're going to end up 15th, 16th.
01:12:25
Nick Britten
yeah Yeah, they'll end up around there. Yeah.
01:12:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Right, well thank you everybody. Thank you all the staff of ah GSPN Academy for those grades. I think generally we've been pretty fair. I think we've only had one unclassified, ungradable.
01:12:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
We've had a couple of A's and most of the people have been B's, C's and D's. Brilliant. ah Now we need to move on quickly because this has been a longer episode than normal to our predictions. And these are not predictions for the weekend, but the predictions for next week because there's a whole roster of Premier League games coming up. I'm going to whistle down them and I'm going to go across in terms of asking people whether it's going to be a home win and a way you win or a draw. That's all I need to know. So first one is Brentford v Man City, Kate.
