Introduction to 'That Saturday Feeling'

00:00:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
Welcome to that Saturday feeling, your sideways glance at all things soccer or football, and we don't mind what you call it. We all love the game here, and it's brought to you by Global Sports Podcast Network, a unique listening experience that puts fans first. So I am your host, Ken Davis. I'm sitting in my office in the middle of the countryside of Derbyshire, and I'm joined by my co-host, my buddy,
00:00:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
My pal, my homie, my BFF. The elephant in the room. Nick, Britain, how you doing? Up in Edinburgh in some kind of conference thing or something, aren't you?
00:00:49
Nick Britten
Yeah, no i'm um'm I'm up in Edinburgh today, working up in Edinburgh. And very nice to see you again. It's very nice to see you. And every week that goes by, you're saying nicer and nicer things about me. So that's always good to hear.
00:01:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's the tablet I'm on. um Right.

Episode Agenda Overview

00:01:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
We've got a packed agenda. I want to talk about the World Cup. I want to talk about some lower league stuff. i one I'm going to ask you a random trivia question, which I'm going to make. I'm going try and make ah i something that we're going to repeat on an episodic basis.
00:01:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
But I want to test your your very random football knowledge, which are yeah hopefully yeah we see how how smart you are.
00:01:21
Nick Britten
Okay.
00:01:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
And we've got to talk about predictions because... It's getting very tight at the top or the bottom there's only two of us in there.

Derby County Performance Analysis

00:01:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
But we yeah we need to look at that Before we get into any of that, though, I need to know what's going on at Derby.
00:01:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
Just want to set the scene for everyone here because I appreciate not everyone will be following this as closely as me and you. Since Boxing Day, there have been 12 matches, 36 points up for grabs.
00:01:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, that can take you to the top of the league. But Derby have only got two of them. Two out of 36. They are now seven points adrift off fourth place.
00:02:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
Bottom of the league. Two crucial home matches to come. One this this weekend against Blackburn. there's some That'll be feisty. And on Tuesday against Coventry.
00:02:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
its Everything hinges on the next few days, Nick. what What's your take on it?
00:02:22
Nick Britten
I think two points is better than none, isn't it? ah So, you know, at least we've got two points out of it.
00:02:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:02:27
Nick Britten
ah But as you say, it's been ah it's been a catastrophic fall. I mean, a proper collapse from what was a quite comfortably mid-table position in the not-too-dim and distant past.
00:02:40
Nick Britten
ah It's going to be very, very difficult. I think most supporters are now thinking, yeah, it's going to be another season in League One. next season. not it is It's primarily because we just don't look like ever scoring a goal.
00:02:53
Nick Britten
And it's great to say, will we win another game this season? But I'm worried about, will we actually score another goal this season? ah Because it's just not creating anything. And then we're making silly kind of mistakes, which means we lose 1-0.
00:03:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hey.
00:03:05
Nick Britten
It's not like we're getting turned over.
00:03:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
No.
00:03:07
Nick Britten
It's not 4-5-0 every game. We're always in games. And then we'll make a mistake. The last two games, 0-0 against Millwall at home in the ninety sixth minute. and we make a stupid mistake and lose with the last kick of the game. 0-0 away ah last week up at Middlesbrough, which in the face of it is a good result.
00:03:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Doing well.
00:03:27
Nick Britten
Eight minutes to go, make a stupid mistake, let in a goal, lose the game 1-0. And it's just a pattern. It's a pattern.

Upcoming Derby Matches Preview

00:03:33
Nick Britten
As you say, two goals, two really difficult games coming up with added spice because, of course, Blackburn Rovers, who are not only pushing hard for the playoffs, the top of the league, and Their manager, who's doing a great job up there, left to come to Derby a couple of weeks ago amid quite a lot of controversy.
00:03:53
Nick Britten
Amid, it has to be said, a good deal of head-scratching from the the external world. Why would a manager leave a top-six club for a team that's going to be all but likely relegated this season?
00:04:06
Nick Britten
um And Blackburn are coming to town.
00:04:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think that was probably the commute, wasn't it?
00:04:11
Nick Britten
It was for lots of reasons.
00:04:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
There's nothing else.
00:04:14
Nick Britten
It was lots of reasons.
00:04:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
Maybe money and maybe the commute.
00:04:14
Nick Britten
I mean, it does. Maybe the money, maybe the commute. Obviously, he lives in Derby or around Derby. yeah Not in Derby, ah but he used to play for us.
00:04:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:04:22
Nick Britten
He lives in the area. I think he'd fallen out a bit with the Blackburn owners anyway, as as managers tend to. And he saw this as as an opportunity. ah But Blackburn will come tomorrow or Saturday and they'll want to win. They will want to win.
00:04:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
It will be spicy.
00:04:37
Nick Britten
They will want to prove.
00:04:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
It will be proper spicy.
00:04:39
Nick Britten
Yeah.
00:04:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then Coventry, and that's got its own managerial connection, hasn't it?
00:04:41
Nick Britten
Yeah. And then Coventry.
00:04:45
Nick Britten
It has because it's the return to for return of Frank Lampard to Pride Park, which is great.
00:04:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. Yeah.
00:04:50
Nick Britten
ah Frank obviously managed the team in 2018-19, got us to the playoff final. yeah We were one game away from being promoted to the Premier League. I know it seems a long time ago now, given our current predicament.
00:05:04
Nick Britten
and And we lost to Aston Villa, and look what's happened Aston Villa, and look what's happened to Derby in between times. But Frank coming back, I think he'll be welcomed back. I don't think there's any hard feelings with Frank Lampard.
00:05:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh, everyone loves you,
00:05:17
Nick Britten
He did leave Derby after only one season, but he left to go to Chelsea and nobody's going to begrudge him going to that.
00:05:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:05:24
Nick Britten
I was a big fan of his. I remain a big fan of his. He's done a terrific job, by the way, at Coventry since he's taken over.
00:05:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
You really have turned it around.
00:05:30
Nick Britten
They've been in a really good run. And other than Tuesday night when Coventry comes to Derby, hope he does really, really well. but it's going to be of another very, very difficult home game. Two home games together.
00:05:41
Nick Britten
Two home games with added spice and two home games we've got to get something out of.
00:05:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
this the The whole season hinges on these two games, in my opinion. If they don't get four points out of these two home games, the boat is sailed. How many points do you think they will get?
00:05:53
Nick Britten
having your but but but Well, I haven't got two out of the last 36. Thanks for that. As you are highlighted at the top of the programme, um I can see us getting no points, frankly, because I don't know when i don't know whether we're going to score another goal.
00:06:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
Right. It's got to be a tough ask after that then, isn't it, to get out of this predicament? that Well, good luck, Garby.
00:06:14
Nick Britten
and We might get a draw. We might get a draw. I think i think one point out of six would be realistic. We're all hoping for six out of six, but look at the current form.
00:06:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
You don't know.
00:06:24
Nick Britten
Look at the way we're playing. Look at the lack of chances of creating. and car i yeah
00:06:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
Bless them. Well, we've got your fingers see we've got your fingers crossed.
00:06:30
Nick Britten
You're whistling in the wind sometimes.
00:06:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
We've got our fingers crossed. We've got a collective, GSPN, That Saturday Feeling, fingers crossed for Derby County.
00:06:35
Nick Britten
like
00:06:38
Nick Britten
It's not every part of my body crossed, I believe you mean.
00:06:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Right.
00:06:41
Nick Britten
And it hurts.
00:06:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah Okay, let's let's move on.

World Cup Halftime Show Debate

00:06:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Right. So ah there's been a revolt, Nick. I've been all over social media and the media of the general legacy media channels, let's put it that way, ah recently. And this week, in the UK at least, there's been a revolt. And the revolt has been against Gianni Infantino's madcap, some would say, idea.
00:07:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
to create a show, a halftime show, in the middle of the World Cup final. Now, I'm really interested views on that for number of reasons. Firstly, because last week in your rant, and there'll be another rant today, ah you were bemoaning halftime. You said halftime's too long.
00:07:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, you can't do anything in halftime. it's true it's either It's in the middle, it's not long enough, or it's too short. Now it's going to be much longer and it's going to be filled with stuff.
00:07:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
So what's your ah what'd you take on that?
00:07:50
Nick Britten
garbage is my take on that it's a so i mean what what is he thinking mean why would you want this is not american football this is not the super bowl where the whole yes yeah ken's wearing his his top it is it's your bengal's top right here um this is not that okay uh american football goes on for hours and hours and hours you can have
00:08:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
Cincinnati Bengals, Joey Burrow top.
00:08:16
Nick Britten
You can have a an hour-long break halfway through it if you want, and nobody will know that you've even stopped. ah the the this is This is not that. ah Football is is a game that is is short, it's fast-paced, and you don't need... i mean As I said last week, for anybody who listened to my rant last week, 15 minutes for half-time, in my opinion, is too long.
00:08:37
Nick Britten
The professional game game needs to take a leaf out of the grassroots game, whereby the referee blows for half-time, you go to the side of the pitch, you have a quick cup of tea or an orange or a drink,
00:08:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
Open orange.
00:08:45
Nick Britten
ah five minutes and you get back on a pitch and get on with it. ah What's going to happen here under this proposal is there's going to be a half-time show, which means they've got to get everybody off the pitch.
00:08:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:08:56
Nick Britten
You've got to get a stage on the pitch and lighting and all of that kind of stuff. You've then got to have a performance of whatever it might be. and and and and then dismantle all of that and then eventually the game will restart.
00:09:08
Nick Britten
If you want a little bit of an insight into what this might look like, ah Shakira did a half-time performance for the 2024 Copa America and that extended half-time to 25 minutes.
00:09:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
I remember that.
00:09:21
Nick Britten
Now, there's two bits to this. Firstly, Football fans just, they're just not interested. Football fans, I mean, football fans want to go and watch football. It's not like say, it is not, this is not American sports where it's all about the event.
00:09:34
Nick Britten
Football sports want to go and watch football and they're just not bothered about anything else. and And they certainly don't want a 25-minute halftime break. And what will happen is there'll be the all these great performers going on the stage. Everyone will just be downstairs having a beer and nobody will be watching.
00:09:48
Nick Britten
and And secondly, players want a 25-minute break where the muscles are getting cold
00:09:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
but be watching it at the end at the at the Super Bowl the players the players often watch it
00:10:00
Nick Britten
Yeah, but again, they're all kitted out and they're this and that. It's just a different, you know, players at Super Bowl don't have to come out and run around at full tilt for 90 minutes straight afterwards, do they? Which is what football players have to do.
00:10:12
Nick Britten
They've got to cut out got to come out from a break and go full tilt for 90 minutes.
00:10:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
controversial
00:10:17
Nick Britten
Your muscles need to be warm. You need to be mentally switched on. is that how How easy or difficult is that? I'm going to find some footballers I know. I'm going to talk to them about this and come back to you next week and find out what their opinion on this is.
00:10:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
What a...
00:10:29
Nick Britten
Because I think they'll all think it's stupid.
00:10:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
I love it. So, and... and you
00:10:34
Nick Britten
Well, you would, because if they had a halftime show at Wrexham, it would be the most entertaining thing on offer.
00:10:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
It'd be amazing, wouldn't it? Amazing. i think i don't I don't know what the halftime show at Burton Albion or Tramier would be like. Well, I do. But I'm all in favour of it.
00:10:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
okay i yeah you know we've It's not our game anymore. We've given it to the world. The world has improved it. And this is just the next step on that. I don't think we can avoid it.
00:11:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah I love the razzmatazz. I think it's going to be... it's the It's the ultimate spectacle of the of the succer of the soccer calendar.
00:11:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I think, hey, extend it. Make it 45 minutes. I don't care. It's fine as i'm as far as I'm concerned. It does...
00:11:26
Nick Britten
So do you mean make the break longer than the game?
00:11:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, yeah. I mean, i' this... Yeah.
00:11:33
Nick Britten
Do you remember, Ken? Do you remember back in 1994 when the World Cup was last hosted in America?
00:11:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah,
00:11:38
Nick Britten
they had these There were a couple of really great madcap proposals going into that. ah One of them was to make the goals bigger. And this was kind of the these these are things that IFAB have to kind of consider.
00:11:49
Nick Britten
You know, when they have their meetings every year, of course, all year long,
00:11:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah, yeah.
00:11:53
Nick Britten
and they meet up, so whatever it is, three, four times a year. And they always have kind of new rules to consider. ah This is where VAR started all these years ago. New rule that somebody had a bright idea. Well, back but ahead of the 1994 World Cup, somebody had a bright idea to make the goals bigger so more goals were scored, so it would be more entertaining to the American public.
00:12:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's thinking outside the box.
00:12:13
Nick Britten
Yeah, you'd like that as well.
00:12:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
The Americans like a lot of scoring.
00:12:16
Nick Britten
Fair.
00:12:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
They like a lot of scoring.
00:12:19
Nick Britten
Yeah.
00:12:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's why basketball is so popular, because someone wins 156-92.
00:12:22
Nick Britten
yeah
00:12:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm. ninety two That's the kind of home and away advantage.
00:12:25
Nick Britten
Yeah. Actually, thinking about all this and go taking one step back, maybe we can introduce that tomorrow at Pride Park, but only into the goal that Derby are shooting in. So Blackburn get a really small goal and Derby get a really big goal.
00:12:38
Nick Britten
Well, that it? Yeah, I can see that working.
00:12:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Physically. i Maybe you should...
00:12:43
Nick Britten
We'd only lose 3-0 then.
00:12:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, yeah it's still a nil-nil, to be honest. it's ah Yeah, i'm I'm all in favour. I think everyone who's against this are the same dinosaurs and I'm going to rant about this properly next week, who go mad when they hear people use the word soccer rather than football, like it's, oh no, my world's caving in, someone's used the word soccer.
00:13:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah Same dinosaurs who do that, correct Americans for calling it soccer when we were calling it soccer 100 years ago. I'm all in favour Knock yourselves out, America.
00:13:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
Knock yourselves out. have have have the Unless it's Gianni Infantino performing himself for 45 minutes, which I would be against, i I'm really looking forward to it. And have a great have a great half an hour doing something miraculous. I think it's but great for the World Game.
00:13:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
And by the way, they are going to try to incorporate. it's not just going to be music. It's going to be culture and media. This is the bit that worries me.
00:13:49
Nick Britten
Thank you.
00:13:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
When they start doing it by by a committee, saying we've got to have a little bit of art in it, we've got to have a bit of sculpture in it, we've got to have a bit of music, and we've got to have a bit of media, it's got to be rubbish.
00:14:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's got to be boring. It's going to be people waving sticks with ribbons on for 10 minutes, isn't it? We don't want any of that. That's got no place in football at all. So so it's a great opportunity to do something amazing.
00:14:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
My worry is they'll do something dreadful. But there you go. Right, moving on. Right, a few things I've got to tell you about here at Global Sports Podcast Network. We spent a lot of time selecting our delivery platform and Zencastr.
00:14:29
Global Sports Podcast Network

00:14:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
Zencastr. Now, just want to extend this little idea a little for five minutes on American sports. Are there other things that you've seen in American sports that you think we might be able to introduce into football as well?
00:15:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I'll start you off with this. i I'm not a massive fan of ice hockey. But what I am a massive fan of ice hockey is the organ that plays halfway through. that In certain gaps, you get... di la they And someone's playing the Wurlitzer for like 30 seconds whilst the ice hockey players are either fighting or picking up the bits of each other that have been knocked off with the hockey sticks or generally there's a break.
00:15:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
So I think, this is my idea... VAR, when there's a decision being made, when we're waiting for that 90, after there's a goal being scored and we don't know if it really is a goal, we've got a minute to wait.
00:15:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
Let's wheel out someone on the organ doing da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da for 45 seconds. Keep us entertained. um' i'm all I'm all for that. What do reckon?
00:16:07
Nick Britten
okay I think it's a great idea. so And where there, just to just i going to follow follow, that is a great idea.
00:16:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you.
00:16:15
Nick Britten
And you could actually do that in in kind of lower league football, if you like, in in where there is no VAR right across the world.
00:16:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:16:21
Nick Britten
Because normally, you know, where there is VAR in leagues across the world, it's normally the top divisions. There's millions of football games going on. and you could You could also introduce it for, don't know, bit of time wasting or when we're taking a throw in, because it takes a good 45 seconds to take a throw in these days.
00:16:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. yeah
00:16:38
Nick Britten
Yeah, or or and yeah when the goalkeeper kind of picks the ball up and puts it down, then walks back and then picks it up again and puts it the other other side of the six-yard box and walks back. and You could do all that.
00:16:49
Nick Britten
You could do it as kind of sign of ah a bit of time-wasting and get the crowd.
00:16:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
what Well, if if the organist had a set little thing to play that took eight seconds, and if the goalkeeper had not actually distributed the ball in that time, it's a penalty and he's sent off.
00:16:53
Nick Britten
Get the crowd.
00:16:58
Nick Britten
Yeah.
00:17:03
Nick Britten
All right, because it's quite right too. Yeah, yeah. Quite right, too. And depending on... But according to your rule of two weeks ago, ah depending on where he had the ball at any one time, would it be a penalty?
00:17:15
Nick Britten
or would it yeah Where is the penalty taken? It's taken from the edge of the box.
00:17:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
It'll be a new style penalty kick. So I'd have one them.
00:17:20
Nick Britten
and like We're inventing the rules of football.
00:17:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
Anything
00:17:22
Nick Britten
Yeah, we're inventing the rules of football brilliantly.
00:17:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah We could revolutionize the game, to be honest. So is there anything else in American football or or any kind of American sports that you've seen and you thought, you know, that's got a place?
00:17:34
Nick Britten
Well, it's the same sort of theme in a way. And we used to have this in football, but it's kind of gone by the wayside because of the culture we now live in. ah But I'm glad to see that one Premier League club club has kept it alive and very much kicking.
00:17:47
Nick Britten
and that's And that's cheerleading. I think cheerleading is a great idea.
00:17:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, yeah.
00:17:52
Nick Britten
And at every and hit free break, because let's face it, football games can be quite dull. I know the Premier League is the most exciting thing in the world and the Bundesliga is brilliant and La Liga is great. and And the MLS is becoming really exciting now.
00:18:05
Nick Britten
but But football, well there's also sort of times where it's just a bit dull. And I think we could do with a little bit of cheerleading on the side to get the crowd whipped up and a bit of half-time entertainment that doesn't take 15 minutes. Whilst you're having a five-minute break for half-time, cheerleaders can nip on, do bit of cheerleading, get the crowd excited again and and nip off.
00:18:25
Nick Britten
um Crystal Palace in the Premier League in England. still have cheerleaders as the teams come out.
00:18:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
The full pom-pom thing. The full pom-pom.
00:18:30
Nick Britten
Yeah, they're called for a press conference.
00:18:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
Come on, Palace. Come on, Palace. Score a goal.
00:18:35
Nick Britten
Yeah. Well, I don't think that's quite what they're doing.
00:18:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
I wonder what the derby would have been.
00:18:39
Nick Britten
but But you get the general idea.
00:18:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha. Ha, ha, ha,
00:18:43
Nick Britten
Yeah. um I mean, look, you know, I quite like some cheerleaders. at the my ground. And to be honest, I prefer it if they stayed on the pitch because they're better than the players. and And so they could have a game whilst they're there. there so but But just to give that credit, because sometimes the crowd just gets a little bit dull a bit bored and the atmosphere just drops.
00:18:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
ha, ha.
00:18:59
Nick Britten
So it needs a bit of, you it's been...
00:19:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
every Every game isn't like a derby game, Nick.
00:19:04
Nick Britten
No, no, but I've watched loads of...
00:19:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
They're special.
00:19:05
Nick Britten
I've watched a lot... No, I know that. But I watch a lot of Premier League football. A lot. And I'm increasingly watching a lot of American MLS soccer. and I watch some European games, and even the top teams, they can just be dull games.
00:19:19
Nick Britten
Or even within exciting games, periods of dullness.
00:19:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
this
00:19:22
Nick Britten
you know what i mean? It's not all hell for leather, 19 goals each, let's face it.
00:19:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:19:26
Nick Britten
So in those periods where it's a little bit down, or when there's an injury break, or or something like that, get the cheerleaders on, get the crowd entertained, keep the atmosphere going. We could do with a little bit more of that, really.
00:19:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's true.
00:19:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
Fantastic. I want to throw a really quick one in this. You'll like this one, Nick. um In American football, the coaches have a challenge flag, a red challenge flag. So if there's a referee's decision they disagree with, they they can challenge two times in a game.
00:19:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
And they throw the the red challenge flag, and yeah that decision has to be reviewed. I think that's a great idea, by the way.
00:20:01
Nick Britten
So they throw the flag at the referee. It's like chuck it out.
00:20:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
you You would get fined if you did that. But it's it's quite a thing.
00:20:07
Nick Britten
But then you could wave your flag and appeal it. So you'll be all right.
00:20:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
And to be honest, they don't really throw it. They just kind of drop it. Almost they do it in a very nonchalant way. But but it's if it's if it comes out of his pocket and it's thrown on the floor, there has to be a review.
00:20:15
Nick Britten
ah
00:20:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think that's really quite an interesting idea.
00:20:21
Nick Britten
on. you know you know we know, a little segment on on rules, yeah rule changes that we should bring into football that we do. I would save that. I would save that for that because that's quite a good idea.
00:20:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
um It's quite a good idea. Okay.
00:20:31
Nick Britten
although Although in soccer as soccer, you just get somebody who's waving a flag permanently because everybody disagrees with every single refereeing decision ever.
00:20:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
Honestly, if it was in soccer and someone threw that flag and it brushed against a player, he'd be rolling around, wouldn't he? Let's be honest. He'd be stretched it off. Right. Okay. Well, that's all.
00:20:48
Nick Britten
likely if it Particularly if it hit his foot. Particularly if it hit his foot because then he can roll around clutching his face.
00:20:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh.
00:20:53
Nick Britten
That's it.
00:20:56
Global Sports Podcast Network

Before I start, I'll give by a week.
00:21:55
Nick Britten
Now, look, it's dropping off you, mate. It's dropping off you.
00:21:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thanks, mate. All American football shirts are massive, though. One of the things I've learned when I'm ordering merchandise from America, Americans are big people. So if you're ordering a medium, you could live in it, literally.
00:22:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
Right, okay. So that's that's the first half. We've got a couple of other quick things to get through because we're, as always, it's taking longer than we normally expect. We've got prediction to do. That's important.
00:22:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
First thing i want to say, I've got me thinking you the myself the other day about some of the players I've seen who kind of have not, let's say, made it to the height that their talents could have propelled them to.
00:22:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
I've got certainly a couple in mind, one in mind particular. ah Is there anyone player-wise that you've kind of seen over the years thought, what, he's a genius, ah but wasn't so didn't quite get get to the levels you might have done?
00:22:56
Nick Britten
Yeah, when we were talking about this in our ah in our pre-production meeting, ah one
00:23:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
Which we do have, by the way. You wouldn't think it, but we do have this.
00:23:03
Nick Britten
ah one one name sprang out, absolutely sprang out of me. And it probably sprang out because I've seen him play ah for my club. But it's ah it's a player who was touted when he was younger as being yeah the the greatest talent of his generation. He came through the ranks Manchester United, along with ray Wayne Rooney and others.
00:23:22
Nick Britten
And he was meant he was touted by Sir Alex Ferguson as one of the greatest players who's going to play the game. And it just never, ever, ever happened for him for a whole load of reasons. And I'm talking, of course, about Ravel Morrison, who is a fantastically talented player, but for all sorts of reasons and off the pe off the field shenanigans and and and on the field,
00:23:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you.
00:23:48
Nick Britten
issues outside of him actually playing football and getting on with teammates and just his general attitude, just never quite made it. And it was just he's had a career where he's been at clubs and just permanently sent out on loan and loans are cut short and contracts are cut short. In fact, one of the one the only title he came to Derby in 2021, which was 11 years after he made his debut for Manchester United. And he only came because Wayne Rooney was manager at that time.
00:24:11
Nick Britten
And actually he had a year's contract at Derby. He saw out that year's contract. That's one of the only times he's actually ever seen out A contract. Normally, he's been either ah but ended early.
00:24:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
Maybe he's changing. Maybe he's maturing in his
00:24:23
Nick Britten
Yeah, yeah. But he didn't. He left Derby after a year. He's now is's now playing, by the way. He's now playing for a club called Precision FC, which is ah in the UAE, second division.
00:24:35
Nick Britten
I mean, you can't really go much lower without turning up, you know, on a pitch on a Sunday morning with a load of lads who have just come in from the pub, can you? ah But Ravard Morrison was a great player.
00:24:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
wouldn't be doing that in the U, are you?
00:24:43
Nick Britten
He's got an amazing touch. And even playing in the, when i saw him playing the championship in real life, uh, when he was, you know, late twenties, um, or early thirties, he was, he was, he had a real talent, you know, he was a really, really talented player.
00:24:57
Nick Britten
And if you watch his highlights reel, you'll see the amazing things he can do with the football, but it's really sad. And a bit it's it's just one of those sort of stories that just think what might've been, because he, if he'd had it mentally in the right place, he could have been one of the greatest players I think we've seen in this country play up,
00:25:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's pretty sad. And he's had a few brushes with the law, hasn't he? Let's to be honest. it
00:25:17
Nick Britten
he's had a few yeah He has had a few brushes with the law and and and quite, you know, one or two unsavoury ones. Although the the last one, the last sort he had with the law was quite comical.
00:25:28
Nick Britten
And he was done for fraud in late 2023 for and so essentially buying for 50 quid a blue badge parking spot. Now, for people who don't know what that is in the UK, ah essentially it's you can buy a badge which allows you to park in a disabled bay.
00:25:47
Nick Britten
in on a street or in ah in a car park, which obviously nearer to shops or wherever you're going to go. um And you can only have one, obviously, if you're registered disabled and you go through an application process. Well, he bought one off what he described in court as some bloke in Old Trafford for 50 quid.
00:26:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
wery
00:26:04
Nick Britten
50 quid, stuck it on his car, ah parked in the disabled bay and and and got caught. Got caught because the traffic warden came around, saw the thing had expired, did some checking, go, hang about, the badge that this belongs to The chap died a couple of last year what have you.
00:26:20
Nick Britten
And Morrison's just bought it off somebody.
00:26:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
let he'd bought a dead person's disabled card.
00:26:23
Nick Britten
I mean, that's just... Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:26:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
i it's not a great advert for a player, is it? If you're turning up for your next year's contract with Precision in UAE and you've got a disabled badge in your front window.
00:26:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
um it's not exactly saying an athlete at the height of his powers, is it?
00:26:45
Nick Britten
no, no. But he got a £1,000 fine for it, by the way. He pled guilty to to fraud. And, yeah, that was that was that. And he's off to the UAE to play football.
00:26:55
Nick Britten
And if you'd ever thought that...
00:26:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
We need to get him on. We need to get him on the show. ah ah I'm going to make it my my my job this week to to try and make contact with Ravel Morrison and ask him where I can get disabled badge.
00:26:59
Nick Britten
love to get him on the show.
00:27:06
Nick Britten
but I met him. um I met him a few times. Yeah, I met him a few times when for Derby.
00:27:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
You met him.
00:27:11
Nick Britten
He's nice bloke. He's a very nice bloke. Quite quiet. Quite unassuming. and and yeah came across came across well. the yeah the fans The fans generally kind of liked him, so there we are.
00:27:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
Good old Ravel. Right. We better, we better push on.
00:27:23
Nick Britten
What might have been, eh?
00:27:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
Um, now I am going to make an executive editorial decision. Uh, we're going to, I'm going to talk about my player that, uh, that should have got to a greater heights next time.
00:27:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
I want to ask you a question.

Listener Interaction Invitation

00:27:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
Um,
00:27:39
Nick Britten
you
00:27:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
What invention... This is a trivial question. Interestingly, if the viewers know the answer to this. If you do know the answer to this, by the way, I want to hear from you. I want you to email me because we've got an email address and that email address is...
00:27:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
That Saturday feeling gspn at gmail.com. Dead simple. We're not reinventing the wheel here. It's that Saturday feeling gspn at gmail.com. Send me anything you want to know about the show, any questions or any answers.
00:28:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
So what's the answer to this one? What invention happened in 1889, which revolutionized which revolutionized Goal line technology.
00:28:32
Nick Britten
Right, give me that one again.
00:28:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
So, and there was an invention in 1889. It was patented. And it was an invention that revolutionized goal line technology.
00:28:46
Nick Britten
Right, wait a minute, because going to draw i'm going to draw this in my padding.
00:28:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh, no, he's drawing goals. No. no
00:28:51
Nick Britten
I'm drawing a goal, and I'm drawing a goal line. and
00:28:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm-hmm.
00:28:54
Nick Britten
And I'm thinking, so obviously 1889 was very much the start football. ah yeah The Football League was only formed in the in the eighteen eighty s ah in the u k and it was the first professional league in the world.
00:28:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:29:05
Nick Britten
So this is at the very, very start of football.
00:29:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
Very, very start-off.
00:29:08
Nick Britten
and
00:29:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well,
00:29:09
Nick Britten
So it's something to do with the goal line, which means it's something to do with the goal.
00:29:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
it's to with goals. I'll give you that. Something do goals.
00:29:15
Nick Britten
Yeah, something to do with goals. So it's either going to be replacing jumpers for goalposts, um So it's not going to be goalposts. but then But by then, by 1889, football had been played.
00:29:28
Nick Britten
I mean, yeah they clubs were formed in like the the early 1800s.
00:29:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, just to put a bit of context in this, Nick, the crossbar, just to put a bit of context in this, the crossbar, there wasn't a crossbar before 1882.
00:29:32
Nick Britten
Right. Right. that
00:29:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
So the crossbar was invented in 1882.
00:29:42
Nick Britten
case, what is addition to...
00:29:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
We're talking about seven years later.
00:29:47
Nick Britten
in that case what what is in addition to The goal, so it's not the it's not the post, it's not the line, it's goal line technology, so it's something about the ball going over to goal. it can only be It can only be, Kenneth, the introduction of because it's the only thing I can think of that that's in a goal that we haven't already talked about.
00:30:09
Nick Britten
So is it the introduction of goal nets?
00:30:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Excellent. Correct. He's done it. He's done it. Well worked out, Sherlock. um So what happened was there was a bloke called John Alexander Brody. He was at a football game in 1889. In October 1889, Everton against Accrington. He was big Everton supporter.
00:30:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
Massive disputed goal. All the players thought it had crossed the line and the ref didn't give it. And the game ended 2-2. I mean, they're still talking about it now in Everton and Accrington. So John Alexander Brody...
00:30:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
is disgusted by this walks away he's an engineer and decides immediately to patent a goal net and he does literally a month later in 1889 and the patent was granted after a year takes a year to get these things through and everybody saw the sense in it it was first used at the 1891 fa cup final Later in 1891, it was deemed compulsory to have goal net. So well worked out, Nick. You get your three points.
00:31:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
And yeah, so goal net was invited invented in 1889 and compulsory from 1891. So that's a little bit of trivia for everybody. hope you enjoyed that.
00:31:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm going to make that a regular. I'm going to try and catch you out on the next one. now given I've given away the crossbow one already. Right, we need to talk predictions before the end of the show. It's getting tight at the top, Nick, because last week of the 14 predictions, remember we did halftime and full time last week, you got five out of 14, pretty dismal performance.
00:31:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
I got eight out of 14, quite a creditable performance, if I so say to myself. So the gap now is down to four. So you've got 49 out of
00:31:52
Nick Britten
Yeah, OK. Yeah.
00:31:57
Nick Britten
Right. So what rule are you going to introduce this week that's going to allow you to cheat and get more points? Is it the first timing of the first throw in perhaps?
00:32:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, nothing like that.
00:32:06
Nick Britten
Amount of beer sold? what would you what are you going to what are you going to throw in that will allow you to get more points and then wait till you're top of the league and then declare the end of the season over?
00:32:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
We don't need to do that yet. I feel I've made sufficient progress with that one. I think we'll probably revisit the Chinese Super League ah Division III if we need to.
00:32:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
At the moment, we don't need to because...
00:32:29
Nick Britten
In other words, if you're not winning.
00:32:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
If I'm not winning. So we're back to normal this week. So I'm going to we've got obviously the 10 games of the Premier League. I'm going to whistle through them. I want a home draw or away from you, Nick. I'll tell you what I've got.
00:32:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
Forest City.
00:32:45
Nick Britten
um Yeah, I'm going for, I can't ah can't really call these two. I think it's going to be quite close game. ah saw, obviously, Forest draw with Arsenal the week. and I think it might be similar thing. So I'm going for a draw.
00:32:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
OK, I've gone for an away win. Brighton v Fulham.
00:33:03
Nick Britten
Yeah, Brian have picked up now. Their performance against Newcastle last week was really, really good. and Fulham, we talk about every single week as being one of the Premier League star performers this year.
00:33:14
Nick Britten
and But I think home advantage might count, so I'm going to go for a home win.
00:33:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
Great home win for me too. Palace against Ipswich.
00:33:21
Nick Britten
Yeah, no the no no ah no such sort of time spent thinking about this, I don't think. ah Home win. ah Really sad to see, by the way, we should mention this,
00:33:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mateta.
00:33:32
Nick Britten
Yeah, that injury to Mateta, that challenge by the Millwall goalkeeper was horrendous.
00:33:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
Wow.
00:33:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's graceful.
00:33:38
Nick Britten
Absolutely disgraceful. And we hope that Jean-Philippe Mateta is back. It's good that Eddie Nketa is coming to ah bit of form in as much as he scored his first Premier League goal the week before he scored in that game against Millwall.
00:33:53
Nick Britten
So he'll be a natural replacement for Mateta. Palace will be far too strong for a switch, so home win.
00:33:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Ian. I think so. I think so. Right. ah Liverpool, Southampton. Can I put you down for an away win on that one?
00:34:04
Nick Britten
I think I might. you know Every week, i kind of as you know, I'm plugging for Southampton every week to get three points to take them above the 11-point mark. and So I think yeah Liverpool will be really, really complacent going into this game.
00:34:16
Nick Britten
In fact, they might just put out their under-13s. ah So on the basis that they do put out their under-13s, they'll still beat Southampton. So home win.
00:34:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
still win 4-0 Brentford Villa trick that's it that's an interesting one
00:34:30
Nick Britten
it is an interesting It is an interesting one. and It's a tricky one to call this, so I'm i'm sitting on a fence on this one. It could go, any any result, you go, yeah, fair enough. So I'll just go for a draw.
00:34:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
right I originally went for a draw but I've changed my mind I'm going for an away win so I've gone away you've gone a draw Wolves v Everton Everton have suddenly become ok
00:34:50
Nick Britten
I'll tell you what, you go first this time, because i know what you do. You wait for me to say it, then you copy me, or if you think you can sneak steal a stealer point out of me, you do that. And you change your mind halfway through like you've just done.
00:35:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, yeah, okay. i'll go I'll go, right, you've done the first five, I'll do the second five. Wolves-Everton, obviously Everton are definitely a different team now under Moyes, but i've i still think I still think Wolves have gone out of enough.
00:35:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
So I'm going for a home win.
00:35:21
Nick Britten
Yeah, OK. I listened to, yesterday when I was driving up to Edinburgh, and I listened to the Wolves podcast, the GSPN Wolves podcast, podcast, Daily Wolves, is very, very good. And they were just bemoaning the lack of atmosphere at Molyneux, the home games, empty seats, dull crowd, very, very quiet, which I was quite surprised at because they're in the midst of a relegation battle.
00:35:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
Wow.
00:35:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, me Yeah.
00:35:44
Nick Britten
ah you know I would have thought people would but turn up and and and create that atmosphere. Molyneux has always been a place with atmosphere. It's it's not one those grounds you associate with Subic Dan. So I was so i'm surprised to hear that.
00:35:55
Nick Britten
and Yeah, i Everton really solid at the back, and I think that will do him a favour. I can see this being a draw, so i'm going for a draw.
00:36:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
Okay. Chelsea-Leicester. ah Chelsea are not on the greatest run of form ever. Leicester are on a Derby-esque run of form.
00:36:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah It's just, it's not going to be a great watch. I don't think there'll be loads of goals. I think it'll be one niil Chelsea. So I'm going home Chelsea.
00:36:25
Nick Britten
Yeah, look, ah you just you just see the word Leicester and you just go the other way. home
00:36:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
Correct. Okay, interesting one here. undenard about this. Spurs v Bournemouth. ah Spurs just can't continue to be rubbish. And, I mean, Bournemouth, a decent team. And i was I was, is it going to be a draw? No, it's going to be a home win. Eventually, things going to revert to the mean.
00:36:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
Spurs going have a decent run of form. I'm going home win on this.
00:36:56
Nick Britten
Yeah, i this is probably the one game that I looked at and and thought, this is I've changed my mind about five times on this. I've gone home win, I've gone away win.
00:37:07
Nick Britten
ah don't I've gone draw, but then I thought, well, it should be entertaining because they're both really attacking sides.
00:37:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, yeah.
00:37:13
Nick Britten
And it's just a question of who might get that goal. In the end, I actually settled on ah on a Bournemouth win. I've gone for an away win there because I just think Bournemouth are really, really good. going forward. I think they are one of the more entertaining teams the Premier League going forward.
00:37:27
Nick Britten
um and And their strikers are better than Tottenham's strikers. So, on on that kind of flawed logic, yeah, I'm going for an away win.
00:37:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
You were better than Tottenham Strogers.
00:37:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
Right. Very good. Ravel Morrison probably could do a job. but Right. Okay. Man United against Arsenal. I mean, Amerim.
00:37:46
Nick Britten
so
00:37:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, we need to have a we need to have a proper conversation about Amerim. something going Something's going wrong there. So, Man United-Arsenal, what reckon?
00:37:57
Nick Britten
um Well, yeah, Arsenal, they have no they no strikers. They can't score goals unless they go away in Europe and score seven against PS3.
00:38:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, that shut us up, didn't it?
00:38:05
Nick Britten
ah That was truly extraordinary. Man United, ah we we we because of time purposes, you took the editorial decision to cut my rant today. So I'm going to save my rant.
00:38:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
what
00:38:16
Nick Britten
I'm going to save my rant for next week because it's going to be just as relevant after this game. Yeah.
00:38:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, we'll have a double rant. You can have a rant and I'll have a rant next week.
00:38:24
Nick Britten
Yeah, and Manchester United can't defend. And that that gives you a clue as to what my rant is about all of this. Arsenal will be too strong for them. It's going to be an away win.
00:38:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
I've gone for a draw. west And I did say I was going to go first on this. So I'll go first the last one. West Ham v Newcastle. ah Can't work either these teams out, really.
00:38:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
Both are very inconsistent for me. ah But I'm going to go for a home win.
00:38:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Because it's a long way from Newcastle.
00:38:56
Nick Britten
Yeah.
00:38:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's the only reason. It's just too it's far to go and win.
00:38:59
Nick Britten
It's a They're a very funny team at a minute, in Newcastle.
00:39:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
So I think it's a home win.
00:39:07
Nick Britten
I've watched them a lot. ah um An awful lot. I've watched pretty much every single one of their games and because my wife is a big Newcastle fan. So I've got a kind of a good interest in them.
00:39:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. You married into it, didn't you?
00:39:18
Nick Britten
Very much so. And and they are they during games, they can have periods during games where they're great. and periods where suddenly they're unrecognisable. And it normally happens after half-time. The last couple of games, they've great the first half and really poor in the second half.
00:39:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
Wow.
00:39:33
Nick Britten
and And it's just a but it's just a bit it's a bit weird. I think, like all things in Newcastle, it kind of depends on the fitness of Alexander Isak. If he plays, I'll back him to win most games out out of anything.
00:39:44
Nick Britten
If he's not, then they don't really have a goal scorer. You know, Anthony Gordon is now suspended after getting sent off last week. Callum Wilson's passed his best with the greatest respect. so um It's a really hard one to call. I think they'll get us something out of it. i hold um I'm going to for a draw here. I think a point of peace is a fair result.
00:40:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
Very good. Well, we've got an interesting mix of results. One way or another, the top of the table is going to get affected this weekend because we yeah we disagree on quite a few of them. So that's that's it.
00:40:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah We always try and make a Global Sports Podcast Network and that Saturday feeling something that we finish in half an hour. We never manage it. ah The problem is me and Nick could talk about this for about another 40 minutes as well.
00:40:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
But that's it. Nick, thank you. Enjoy the rest of your day in Edinburgh, whatever you're up to up there. What are you up to up there?
00:40:33
Nick Britten
i won't Well, I won't be because in about three hours I'll be in Newcastle.
00:40:36
Nick Britten
Because I've been working Edinburgh for the last couple of days, then I'm heading to Newcastle for um work tonight. um I'm comparing a charity event tonight in Newcastle, so I'm looking very much forward to that.
00:40:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
All right.
00:40:48
Nick Britten
And then back to sunny Derby first thing tomorrow morning.
00:40:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
