Nathan - Aston Villa
you
00:00:05
Mikey
Hello and welcome to another episode of the Daily English Podcast here at GSPN. I am today joined by two wonderful people overseas. We've got Nathan, the Villa fan. How are you, Nathan?
00:00:20
Nathan - Aston Villa
I'm good, thank you. A little bit salty about the the wolves' loss, but we have to get over it and we move on, right?
00:00:29
Mikey
Absolutely. And we're also joined by Ishan Fonten, a Germany shirt today, Ishan, is it?
00:00:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, ah got a rep, Tony Cruz from the Euros, um fresh kit. I had to, had to cough this one. Not my favorite.
00:00:44
Mikey
Very nice, very nice.

Arsenal vs City: Early Dynamics and Key Moments

00:00:46
Mikey
how are Well, we've got a full fixture list of games this weekend, and a lot has happened, and there's so many things that we're going to talk about. But we're going to start at Arsenal, and who has played City, and it was a huge game for Arsenal. It was a difference of going six points behind Liverpool, and they managed to do that. The game was very, very interesting, in my opinion. They went ahead very early and with Mike Nordgaard,
00:01:14
Mikey
And for the rest of that half, it seemed fairly fairly dominant, not very much happened. Early in the second half, City hit back and with their talisman, Erling Haaland. And then after that, the demise of City happened, which was beautiful to watch in so many ways as a United fan. However, the the I thought the finishing Although looking at some points like the partly goal was quite lucky with the deflection. Other than that, the finishing of that of of the Arsenal goals I thought were very, very good. I'm going to come to Isham first.

City's Inconsistencies and Vulnerabilities

00:01:48
Mikey
What were your thoughts on this game?
00:01:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
I thought it was interesting how last week a City conceded early um fought back and then pushed on like a previous City would and how this season they'll concede early or not concede and maybe fight back but crumble in the second half because I think What we're seeing now with City this season is the fear factor is not maybe not gone, but it's it's almost obliterated. Because this this what happened today happened exactly in the PSG game. As soon as they equalized, as soon as they like had that little bit of momentum, Arsenal pushed, Arsenal pushed, and PSG pushed.
00:02:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
And they got the fruits of their labor. And I think that was that' reflected in the score line. And it's reflected in the 40 minutes after Holland's goal of just, it was just Arsenal. It was just Arsenal.
00:02:44
Mikey
Yeah, agreed. like City c held on to the draw for 60 seconds ah before Arsenal regain the lead. which you It a lot about their team at the minute. Nathan, what were your takeaways from that game?

Arsenal's Strategy and Key Performances

00:02:58
Nathan - Aston Villa
um Yeah, I thought the the early goal and the the way that they just give them the ball, the Arsenal all tend to start games really, really aggressive and intense. And it just felt like they did wasn't ready to play the game. And they when you go 1-0 down so early, it sets that narrative that you've got to come back and you've got to push on. I just felt, yeah, they got they got the equalizer. It was a really good ball in from Savino, who's had a little bit of an upturn in form.
00:03:28
Nathan - Aston Villa
and Yeah, I feel like the the Harlan thing, when the last game when he threw the ball at Gabrielle, and there's a little bit of needle between the two teams. Maybe like because Harlan scored it, it spurred them on a little bit. And yeah, I like what you said about the quality of goals. Lewis Skelly's goal was amazing. He's had a really good starting campaign for Arsenal. And then I thought Havertz was linking the play very well. He got his goal in the end.
00:03:58
Nathan - Aston Villa
And then just to put the the cherry on top, Nuanieri hitting that goal, when you have one of your own scoring goals like that in big games, it's it's really really good for you, especially yeah your whole old club.
00:04:15
Nathan - Aston Villa
It demonstrates how good your youth academy is.

City's Defensive Weaknesses

00:04:18
Nathan - Aston Villa
But I think think defensively, ah ah Man City have really, really showed vulnerabilities this season.
00:04:18
Mikey
Yeah, definitely
00:04:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:04:25
Nathan - Aston Villa
And that game today highlighted that. um especially down the left side within Nuanieri, Golguvar, Diard and Savini. They don't look in sync or they don't know how to and how to defend that wall as a pairing. so
00:04:40
Mikey
Yeah, I know I agree. Can I have this goal reminding me of Lucas Podolsky back in the day? Firing it across goal, whipping it into the corner. I feel like it was testament to the form of both teams at the minute. Arsenal took advantage of games where maybe it could have gone either way and City showed that they really are struggling to maintain like they did the They had a similar game to Chelsea at home, I thought, where it could have gone either way, and the Chelsea game happened to go City's way, and whereas the Arsenal game definitely hasn't. So we move on from two teams that are doing really well, and all this is going to annoy people because I'm moving about. and So I'm going to go to another team that are significantly struggling,
00:05:29
Mikey
ah trying to stay out of the relegation battle and that is Man United. All Trafford was, yet again, a horrible place to be as we we saw United lose 2-0 to Palace.
00:05:44
Mikey
I'm going to go to our fellow Man United fan first.

Man United's Struggles Against Palace

00:05:48
Mikey
Ishaan, what went wrong today?
00:05:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
of you I think it's just yet another example of um us having the quality and none of the efficacy. It's it's so frustrating to see these footballers that are paid millions and millions of pounds like flutter. And I guess it's a point to the how much confidence and momentum has in football.
00:06:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
and like you hope once Reuben Amorim gets his tactical set up in that like it's ah it'll be a different story. But if we continue to see stuff like this, you're gonna lose the fans. it's It's only a matter of time. you know ah That is my biggest frustration with all of this is that
00:06:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
After so many years of being a United fan, after Post-Fergie, I think the fans are starting to lose hope season after season, manager after manager. I think when a lot of fans, when they saw 10-Hog and saw what he did with IX, there was this notion of, okay, finally we have our men, finally we have our men. And like, it felt very much last straw. And then now with Ruben Anamurim, you don't want to be too harsh because it's still the start of his journey, but you're creating foundations, you know? so
00:07:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
Today's game was um one team having a striker that was putting away their chances and another team that was still messing around with tactics. I think putting my new up, I'm a big fan of pushing my new up for for the up the field. But I don't think we can afford to do it in place of ah of ah our number nine, you know, like, how how can we have the output of goals if we don't really have that figure out help top. I know it can be done. City have won the Premier League with this team, but that's when they had supreme confidence in the system. That's when they had supreme confidence with the wingers to do their job and push in. And Liverpool have done it. It's the same thing. though like once If you have supreme confidence in your wingers to have the output, then you can have a nine that is a false nine and drops back.
00:07:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
So I think that's what I would point to more than anything. It it also shows you how ah United have been linked with Matthias Tell for good reason. you know We need more attacking options. If Ahmad gets an injury, if Garnache gets an injury, we are so ridiculously thin up top that we need reinforcements.
00:08:15
Mikey
Yeah, and Lissandro Martinez went off with another knee injury, which could arguably be one of United's most consistent players over the last few games, leaving Amherim with a platform that is significantly struggling.
00:08:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
and
00:08:29
Mikey
But talking about platforms that don't struggle, here at Zencaster, we'd like to share with you an advert of how and why you should use your platform service at Zencaster.

Ishan, can you press the ad for us?
00:09:16

Forest's Dominant Victory Over Brighton

00:09:42
Mikey
forest against Brighton.
00:09:43
Mikey
and and what a response. I said it in the ah Friday preview show that this was a huge game for Forrest.
00:09:52
Nathan - Aston Villa
eight
00:09:53
Mikey
If they wanted to be regarded as a team in the top four today, this weekend they had to go to Spark and they did exactly that.
00:09:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
welcome
00:10:00
Mikey
They smashed seven goals against Brighton. Chris Wood with a hat trick a shout out from me personally from Anthony Alanga I thought he was excellent throughout and he stood out ah yeah I think he got a hat trick of assists actually um yeah I think it sends a clear message and and also to top that off when your team are performing well in an attacking sense it's very very vital that you're defensively strong as well and I think
00:10:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
Okay.
00:10:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm going to move on. I'm going to move on.
00:10:29
Mikey
goalkeeper and the save against Welbeck onto the bar that nearly crossed the line, it was testament to that.
00:10:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
don't know how
00:10:36
Mikey
I'm going to go up to Nathan on the forest game, can you tell us really about that?
00:10:42
Nathan - Aston Villa
Yeah, I echo um things that you said about Nottingham just, a they just kept pushing and pushing and pushing in the first half and they just didn't have any answers.
00:10:54
Nathan - Aston Villa
And I thought Gibbs White was amazing in that first half. I think he's really strengthening his England and and ah credentials.
00:10:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
i
00:11:02
Nathan - Aston Villa
He was just everything, he all the passes he made was coming off. um the with They kept releasing Alanga down the right, and I think they had Tariq Lamptey, a left back, who's not a natural left back. And it was showing like how one the 1v1 matchup there was, he was getting the better of him. And yeah, just I just think there were 3-0 within the space of 20 or 30 minutes, and it was really was really damaging to see like how defensively brighten this season has been.
00:11:34
Nathan - Aston Villa
been so weak like Lewis done with the own goal as well ah that's not like him he's been a good Premier League player over the years but yeah just think Nottingham Forest state this the embodiment of just intensity aggression and with Chris Wood up front having the season of all seasons it's just everything just clicking into place for them I noticed Danilo came back as well and he's a brilliant player also so they've got a lot to
00:11:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
fire
00:12:01
Nathan - Aston Villa
They've got a lot to and look forward to as a nothing in the forest fans, especially not relegation battles anymore.
00:12:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
no
00:12:08
Mikey
Yeah, definitely. I think one of the questions that I did want to ask both of you today was, so Chris Wood's performance and season so far has been phenomenal. ah But I wanted to ask you guys what level of football do you think he is? Where would where where is the pinnacle for Chris Wood's career? Because as you both said, as we've said, he's playing phenomenally well.
00:12:30
Mikey
in ah in a forest side which are exceeding their expectations. But realistically, where where could he see his career is resist? Is this the pinnacle of it? Or do you think he could be playing in a bigger team?
00:12:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
Personally, I think i mean he's 33 years old. you know He played in the 2010 World Cup for New Zealand at 18 or something like that. He's had a long, long career. And I think what we're seeing is the pinnacle. um Just because I think it's an accumulation of all of his experience, he's in a good age where he can still use that experience and um really well.
00:13:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
and I hate to say it sometimes, but is there really a better league than the Premier League? 17 goals in the season. is is People would win top goal scorers with 18 goals, you know, like in previous campaigns. So it's it's quite a high bar. If he gets better, all glory to him, great for him, but um I think we could be seeing the pinnacle of his career.
00:13:28
Mikey
Do you agree, Nathan?
00:13:30
Nathan - Aston Villa
Yeah, um his age especially, and ah I just think that who would want to pay premium price for a striker of that age, but saying that you pay for what you get right now, that's especially the the the sense with Watkins, that his' he's pushing 30. But I just think not in good faith can get into Europe, um and he can have a run at Europe. I could see that being in the pinnacle.
00:13:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm.
00:13:59
Nathan - Aston Villa
But I definitely think, given his career, I mean, he was at Burnley and he he did chip in, probably got close to 10 Premier League goals. I know he was in, he was a good championship

Newcastle vs Fulham: Gameplay Highlights

00:14:09
Nathan - Aston Villa
striker as well.
00:14:09
Nathan - Aston Villa
But yeah, I definitely say this is his ceiling.
00:14:12
Mikey
yeah yeah
00:14:13
Nathan - Aston Villa
He's found the right club.
00:14:16
Mikey
Fair enough. So we're going to jump on to the Newcastle Fulham game um and for anyone who who loves football, genuinely in this game I saw one of my favourite things that I could possibly see on a football pitch and it was the Tonoli half-bolly that leathered the crossbar And ah it just makes it just gives me ah such a warm feeling inside when I see something as beautiful as that.
00:14:39
Nathan - Aston Villa
All right.
00:14:41
Mikey
I didn't go in and I think it's even better when it doesn't go in. it's just It was stunning. I think it hit the bar as well in that game ah with a beautiful effort, but because it was on the half poly, I'm giving it to Sonoly for me.
00:14:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:14:48
Nathan - Aston Villa
Yeah.
00:14:53
Mikey
um
00:14:54
Nathan - Aston Villa
and
00:14:54
Mikey
Gordon's run for the first goal was was a standout, ah created this space and and and took full advantage of it. He had the bit between his teeth and I've not seen that for a few games now. Full of move though for the goal was a very two-touch, one-touch training ground, training ground-esque and I think it was almost impossible to defend against.
00:15:17
Mikey
um and the subs obviously coming on and making a difference and the Munes finish I thought was so classy very very clever um touch to to see it go past the goalkeeper ah Nathan you you said you you were quite interested in this game
00:15:34
Nathan - Aston Villa
Yeah, because I just think on paper, yeah Newcastle, and up until the loss to Bournemouth, they've won nine games in a row. So they they're a team that are high up on a team that is watchable, especially with Isaac up front, who's been amazing this season. um And I think it was, I read a stat that it was Fulham's first win at St. James's Park since 2009. So 16 years of not getting any results at St. James's Park.
00:16:01
Nathan - Aston Villa
Well, I just think it's signified Marco Silva's time at Fulham and how he's assembled the squad. That is, I mean, they lost Paulina in the summer and I was a fan who thought, Oh, that's going to really hinder them. They might be down the bottom end of the league, but they've accumulated Smith row. They've got Muniz and Raul Jimenez. Um, they've, they've not spent, this just signifies a spent a ah not a lot of money on good Premier league players. And it just shows that recruitment is so key.
00:16:30
Nathan - Aston Villa
especially with Anthony Robertson, I think he's the top assists for a defender this season. So they've got a very strong base of defending and then they were very threatening on the attack with the Wobe and Smith row. And I noticed um Harry Wilson's injured, so Adama Troyore came in and he had a big input in the game.
00:16:51
Mikey
Yeah, absolutely. Are you showing anything you wanted to add to that game?
00:16:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, agreed. I think it was um a good testament to that one the quality of both teams when we look at a United who's struggling who with recruitment ah being the I would argue the focal point to see two teams that have done a really fantastic job. We made a mention in a prep for the episode that this is Fulham's first win at St. James Park since what, 2008, 2009? And correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure that's the season that Alan Shearer took over Newcastle at the end and they still got relegated. So pretty good testament to both the longevity of Fulham, how
00:17:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
they're still competing. you know like in In a Premier League where the costs are so high, the the quality of the league is fantastic. I think we see them in the Champions League. like If Forest qualify for the Champions League, we could we could see them competing. right So for a 10th place team to come to Newcastle and stamp their credentials for the quality of their team. was It was fantastic to watch. I thought it was a great Premier League encounter. i like I'm so glad that Mikey brought up the Tonali hit. I like was gobsmacked when I saw that. I can't believe it's not getting enough love on the internet because it's just so sweet in the way it swerves.

Fulham's Historic Win at St. James's Park

00:18:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
But yeah, I think that also, like, this is a classic case of the game is on a knife edge, you know, like we we talk about Fulham and Fulham's credentials, but Newcastle were in this game, you know, if it it was really dependent on the last five to 10 minutes, I think it's a great example of what makes football so beautiful is you have five to 10 minutes to make a difference.
00:18:15
Mikey
Yeah, absolutely.
00:18:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
And it's just that one moment that's going to count. And unfortunately, for Newcastle fans, Fulham got it this round.
00:18:45
Mikey
Yeah absolutely it does and and and making it count is everything that matters and that's why here at the Global Sports Network we spent a lot of time selecting our delivery platform. Zencast came out as a clear winner with a 4k video recording from your phone and an AI editing tool that automatically removes all those erms and odds It's super easy to start a podcast that sounds great and is delivered efficiently.
00:19:11
Mikey
If you're ready to tell your story check out the link in the show description and learn more about Zencaster. Now to finish with you boys I would like to go to the Premier League table as it looks on this fine Monday morning.
00:19:26
Mikey
We have three teams holding the relegation zone and they are all teams that were promoted
00:19:32
Nathan - Aston Villa
and all.
00:19:35
Mikey
This season, Nathan, you highlighted this as being problematic for those teams. The only team that are in touching distance are Wolves, in my opinion. After that, you've got Everton who also have a game in hand. If they were to win that game in hand, they would go 10 points clear of Wolves, which means it's a four horse race, in my opinion, ah with the relegation battle. What's your take on it and what's your vibe about the gulf between the teams that are coming up?
00:20:04
Nathan - Aston Villa
Yeah, well, if we go through team by team, Southampton, you could argue and a lot of their fans would say that they shouldn't have gone up. It was a very, very closely knit player final that they had. And their squad that they've assembled just not Premier League ready. Like there's not many players who have got Premier League experience or they've got players like a Rebo and Adam Armstrong. It's it's a very um championship looking squad.
00:20:33
Nathan - Aston Villa
And then obviously the manager is still trying to play, hattin' out from the back, Pep Guardiola style, and he ends up losing his job. And look at the points they're on is nearly equalling Derby's lowest ever Premier League points tally. And then if you look at Leicester, they sat the manager when they're 16th. So two of the managers have lost their job. And he's been on a terrible run by an destroy up until the Tottenham win.
00:21:01
Nathan - Aston Villa
which dragged Tottenham closer to it, but you you you'd say on paper Tottenham are not going to get relegated with the squad that they have. And again, like you've got 38-year-old Vardy up front, Mavadidi players like this, who are decent young players, um El Canoos. Defensively, I think they've got the whole championship defence that they had, just investor guard, wild face.
00:21:01
Mikey
Thank you.
00:21:26
Nathan - Aston Villa
So it's it's it's hard to see how they've, I'm not saying they have to spend a ton of money, but it's hard to see how they're going to compete with the same players that they had. um And then if you look at Ipswich, I'd say they've probably give it the best go um and they've they've looked good in games. um de la There's a few shining lights to laugh. Hutchinson's look good.
00:21:49
Nathan - Aston Villa
But again, i I just think the golfing class is just it's really, really high. And I think any teams coming up really have to focus on these teams like Bournemouth and follow them with their recruitment and get it right to have any kind of chance.
00:22:02
Nathan - Aston Villa
It's really damaging for the league to see how hard the jump from championship to Premier League is.
00:22:08
Nathan - Aston Villa
Yeah.
00:22:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I think I would also add that like um you're also seeing teams trying to like even do this like aspect where they use like the yo-yo method, where they go up once and know that they're going to get relegated.
00:22:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
And the whole point is to get up that second season and use the parachute payments from the relegation into the championship. like ah ah like A good example of this is Norwich.
00:22:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Norwich went up, came down, went up and wanted to stay up, but went back down again. And I think that's what we're going to see more and more often is that there's going to be a set of six, maybe seven teams in the championship at the top that are just going to come back up, go back down, come back up like a Sheffield United, for example.
00:22:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And it's frustrating, because you want you don't want the issue to only be money, but the problem is, like um if you look at the example of Forest, Forest are doing fantastically now, but that's because they invested buttloads of money. you know They invested hundreds of millions of pounds, went into, um and broke the profit and sustainability rules, had the points deduction, barely escaped last season, and now we're profiting,
00:23:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
But after several really lucky gambles for being real, because like with a points deduction, odds on you're nailed for relegation, especially if you don't have quality in your squad. So thankfully, Nottingham Forest fans will rejoice and like enjoy the time now, but it so could have gone a hundred times worse. And I like, I guess it's the problem with the might of the Premier League is yes, we can compete in the European side, but I think it It lets down the football pyramid to a certain extent and I think that's troubling to see.
00:23:59
Mikey
Yeah, it's quite deep. um It looks dismal for the relegation zone and yeah, I do agree with you. It's sad that it comes down to some money and and I think recruitment is such a pivotal point to what you both said there.
00:24:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
so
00:24:12
Mikey
If you can recruit well, you can you can make Premier League status is sustainable, I think, but it is it is pivotal and you need you need a strong football club who's willing to back a manager that's right for that football club.
00:24:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Exactly.
00:24:27
Mikey
A quick touch on the title race. Six points in it, Liverpool with the game in hand, nine points clear. It looks as though if Liverpool can maintain consistency, and they will be title holders come the end of the season.
00:24:43
Mikey
I can't see any major shocks. Can you guys see anything going on towards to stop them winning it?
00:24:51
Nathan - Aston Villa
I can only see Liverpool winning it now to be honest especially with that game in hand so you're talking nine points I've got to lose three games and I just I just don't see it especially with their the only way I would see it is if they have major injuries especially van Dyck he's a he's the one of the key players who they can't play, they can't challenge without.
00:25:17
Nathan - Aston Villa
But yeah, I just think Slott deserves an amazing credit for, especially with the players they bought, they hardly bought anybody. So the whole ah squad he came in with was the same squad. So I think he he deserves a lot of credit for where he's got them to, especially with the Champions League as well, the top of the Champions League as well.
00:25:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:25:35
Nathan - Aston Villa
So that's that's That's amazing. I just think um maybe fatigue comes in during when Champions League comes back um and then they can hold up with injuries, which Salah is never injured.
00:25:48
Nathan - Aston Villa
Salah is probably the best one of the best players in the world. I can only see Liverpool winning it now.
00:25:52
Mikey
yeah Yeah, I've got to agree. And I think when he came in, a lot of managers like to put their own stamp on it and there was no knee-jerk reaction from him. He didn't even imp buy anybody. He kept it the same. He didn't try and change too many things. and full credit to him because he slowly created his own his own ethos and it's very very clear in what way that he wants Liverpool to play and it isn't exactly what Jurgen Klopp was doing but he didn't do anything drastic which I think it has been been really pivotal and the fact that other teams have dropped points and had a bit of incon inconsistency in form has probably played quite a big part
