Introduction to Beyond the Pitch

00:00:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome to Beyond the Pitch, a daily women's football podcast brought to you by the Global Sports Podcast Network. I'm Catherine and I'm joined today by Nat. Hello.
00:00:19
Nat
interesting we are having some ah issue here can see I'm here but I'm not here but actually here but hello everyone um
00:00:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, you're there now.
00:00:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
but you You're here, that's the important thing, and you are here.
00:00:34
Nat
yeah
00:00:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
We're both here, okay. So today we're going to talk about the weekend's WSL action, a slightly controversial

Weekend's WSL Highlights

00:00:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
penalty. We'll have a peek down at the third and fourth tiers of English women's football, and we'll review some weekend's results and news across Europe and the NWSL.
00:00:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
So, firstly, with the WSL, just to set the scene. It's been a big weekend, big games at both ends of the table. At the top, we've had the clash between Chelsea and Manchester City. The Merseyside Derby, Brighton meeting West Ham, the North London Derby. But I think we should start with the Merseyside Derby. um So just to set the scene, coming into the game, Liverpool were beaten by Chelsea 3-0 last time. Everton drew with Crystal Palace.
00:01:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
They both needed a result for different reasons, Everton to move away from the relegation battle and Liverpool to try and edge their way into the top four, which I really hope they don't as a United fan. They can stay well away if it's up to me, but it's not. um What were your thoughts on the multi-side derby? Can I guess what you're going to start with?
00:01:43
Nat
and Do I have to start with? Well, I'm... ah ah So I had a a soft tie for Everton, first of all, because they ah there is Aurora Gali that is in the roster, so she's out right now for an unfortunate injury to the ACL. They also had Martina Piemonte until last season, so I have a soft spot, let's say,

Merseyside Derby Analysis

00:02:08
Nat
there for Everton. Nevertheless,
00:02:11
Nat
I have to say, I still i have to understand how they play. I i don't really understand the plan there. um I don't understand the vision um and the structure in terms of play. um So every time they play, i give like whatever comes out, I think it's a surprise for them as well. I do agree that they needed a good result. um However, how they got today a good result,
00:02:39
Nat
um To me, it looks more like a thief getting the good bank and some money from there because they had, I would say, a couple of occasions and they got the gold through a penalty. I don't know what you think about the pen and we can spend a lot of time there, but it wasn't a pen.
00:03:06
Nat
ah she she for two reasons not even one uh first of all it but it wasn't in the area so you cannot have a penalty when the the foul is not in the area but that's me am i a referee cap there uh second of all and she no one touched her no one hit her uh she just tripped and fell down and went on on the ground and that's a pen and i do appreciate that
00:03:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah
00:03:36
Nat
you know, the ref might have not seen that. um And that's why there is all the other signs like do we want to introduce a VAR to the WSL as is happening already in the Premier League and all the Jets.
00:03:49
Nat
So yeah, ah but go on.
00:03:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
But I was just going to say it's interesting. Matt Beard talked about

VAR Debate in WSL

00:03:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
um in his post-match comments, he talked about VAR and just said that isn't the money in the WSL to implement it. But I mean, I agree with you. It was no way a penalty. And if there was VAR, I can't imagine they wouldn't have overturned it. I mean, she didn't. There was no contact. There was literally it was inches away. It wasn't even close. There was no contact whatsoever.
00:04:22
Nat
And that is, you know, and that how could that have been the rest of the game after that? in in For both teams, I'm not just even talking about about Everton or in specific or Liverpool, but Gade for the Liverpool result. I think they have quite a good team. I think the work that has been done done behind the scenes to be in the top four.
00:04:46
Nat
has been amazing the last two seasons. However, at the very end, that is for what we say but when we play, right? That is football. Good for Everton, that they are taking another breath. But again, I have the feeling that for Everton specifically, they need to come up with a strategy because there is no strategy. like It looks to me, I don't know what were you got from there, but it looks to me like every game, reset, let's see what's coming up, like it's a little bit youthful, but reset, let's see what's coming down the way, try to put your best, off you go, you know?
00:05:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, trying to be very kind ah to the Everton staff, I would also say that I think because they had, what was it, two ACLs in two games at the beginning of the season.
00:05:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
um I mean, I think they probably had planned for something different. um But no, I do agree with you that there's not really much of a style of play.
00:05:51
Nat
yeah
00:05:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
okay
00:05:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
um So dodgy penalty there. um There were a few other dodgy calls around ah this weekend, but let's go through some of the other games. So Arsenal won the North London Derby.
00:06:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah So there's been a lot lot more

North London Derby and Arsenal's Dynamics

00:06:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
calls for Renee Slegers to get the top job permanently. Alessia Russo scored within the opening 10 minutes. She really likes doing that. She did that against ah the Republic of Ireland as well for England within the first five minutes. And yeah, she likes coming out very strongly out of the blocks, doesn't she?
00:06:29
Nat
I think Aliserous is having a second life, I would say, in a positive way after the international break there they had a month ago. I think she is three I think she had she had the second, i really second a life, but and I think she's doing very well.
00:06:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, ah no, I agree with you. I think I think she's really she's probably since. I double has gone. I think she's probably the most improved of the last few games. And I wonder if that's just she just seems to be playing with freedom. um It's like you can see that she's been kind of shackled previously. And now they've released the shackles and just said, go, just have fun. Go and play.
00:07:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
um
00:07:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
go and play some football.
00:07:22
Nat
I think it's the vibe of the whole team. I don't know what you think about that but ah it seems that there was a problem there. It might not be just the ah the coach.
00:07:33
Nat
um It might be a problem within the team and the coach that something broke down in
00:07:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
and
00:07:40
Nat
in sort of relationship trust of something, ah but definitely seems the end of the team. And we also saw them during, we I mean, I saw them playing in the Champions League and I was i was one of the the people say, oh, you went to so this year, it's going to be to us, you know.
00:07:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
no
00:07:58
Nat
And then that was, i have to on my um ah on my side, I have to say, I say that um a month and a half ago, yeah.
00:08:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, there's no chance for next week, for this week.
00:08:06
Nat
So it's not,
00:08:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
and this came from
00:08:09
Nat
Yeah, no, i think i i think I think what I've seen is the completely another arsenal.
00:08:15
Nat
I think they are in a way more relaxed, more as you describe, more free yeah like the freedom is much wider. um I think it they just seem more more as a team instead of a happy team to play.
00:08:31
Nat
I don't know what how to describe. I just hope that You know, and then the and interim coach said five games under her spell, but I hope they really consider more than that.
00:08:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I mean, my I'm not an Arsenal fan, disclaimer. My fear is, as a Manchester United fan of the women's and men's teams, we've seen this before when a coach leaves and an interim comes in, does very well, everyone gets kind of spellbound and they offer the interim the job.
00:09:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
I agree with you. I think they need to take these games out of the equation and make sure they're getting the right person, the best person for the job. Obviously, I mean, it's all very rosy at the moment.
00:09:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah That's what Leah Williams said this week, but I just fear we've kind of gone down this road before with the Manchester United men's of
00:09:30
Nat
Mm

Coaching Dynamics in Women's Football

00:09:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
offering an interim, uh, the job and it not working out.
00:09:32
Nat
hmm.
00:09:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I just think was that interim really the best person for the job? um or were they just kind of they're doing quite well it's kind of an easy decision to to go for the interim.
00:09:49
Nat
don't know in the sense that there are there are rumors that because of the results of course René's leg seems to be the one but yeah I just hope they get women coaching
00:10:10
Nat
been whiching
00:10:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:10:14
Nat
But I just ah hope that ah they get a women coach because I think that in their history there has been a lack of women coaching and I wonder if that is one of the components that is working now.
00:10:27
Nat
um But I'm also curious because that they have a they really clearly had the set time of five games.
00:10:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:10:36
Nat
So I'm very curious of who they have in mind after those five games and if there are already talks going on. um But I guess we will see after the international break who as this person is eventually or allegedly.
00:10:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
Absolutely. I just have a couple of more points on the WSL before we move on. ah Firstly, can I just say Sonia Bombasto is being bombastic. wo ah She just keeps winning and I've been trying to think about

Chelsea's Tactical Evolution

00:11:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
what it is that she's kind of brought to the WSL and brought to Chelsea that's slightly different to what they had with Emma Hayes.
00:11:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
I've been trying to think about that but obviously I'm not a Chelsea fan either so I don't really, I watch them a lot but I don't, you know, know that much. Do you have any thoughts?
00:11:24
Nat
I believe that um they and the the way I play is much more aggressive ah than before. I think also, yeah, but also that like in the last third that they are not playing what I call it's my ball, it's your ball.
00:11:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm scoring a lot more goals.
00:11:42
Nat
Like ah with Emma Hayes, they had a lot of passing ah before scoring, which is a way of play or keeping possession.
00:11:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm.
00:11:49
Nat
I think here there are a little bit more ruthless and very aggressive ah to score. And no matter who does score, they want really to score. And there is this really...
00:12:00
Nat
ah fast pace and will to score. Also, I think um the way she utilised some players like Ramirez, I think it's ah very efficient.
00:12:13
Nat
And I wonder if it is because ah she had the legacy with some of the players that used to play at Lyon.
00:12:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:12:21
Nat
Those players that last season had been a little bit in um in the shade they seem to have an ah again they mean they seem to have found their way um but and considering that Chelsea like you look at the bench and you're like okay and then you look at the people that are coming almost out from inches like oh okay so it's a little bit like you know um i always find Chelsea quite interesting because if whenever you look you see talent but sometimes i think the hard way the harsh of of having so much talent and how do you make them work together
00:12:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
and
00:12:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm hmm.
00:13:02
Nat
where the ego doesn't just to show up, but is more at the service of the team. And I i don't know what is the format, I don't know, but Bon Pastor Simay found it. So we're done, I have that.
00:13:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I mean, that game against Manchester City, I think was just a masterclass in game plan. ah because they just neutralised Manchester City ah completely.
00:13:27
Nat
you were but ye You were able to see the face of a Bani show when at the end she was like destroyed because they they put her in a box.
00:13:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
and yeah
00:13:40
Nat
of yeah
00:13:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah Probably very much not used to that, funny, sure. um The Global Sports Podcast Network is changing the face of football podcasts for dedicated daily content for every Premier League team, women's football, fantasy football, and a daily Premier League wrap-up broadcasted in five different languages. 00:14:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
Okay, so moving into our second topic, this is a NAT specialty. This is a look a little bit further down in the leagues to the the third and fourth tiers of English women's football. So tell me

Grassroots Women's Football in England

00:14:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
about it.
00:14:21
Nat
Well, you know, I got interested in TF3 and TF4 mainly because I started to ah work in the youth side of the game ah in one of the TF4 team which is QPR.
00:14:35
Nat
but also because last year I was fortunate enough to be part of the ah coaching program ah led by the f FA in FA W&L um ah team, which is QPR for C. So I got a little bit passionate to understand how it works. And I had also the opportunity um to speak with coaches of ah other teams that are in tier three, because QPR is in tier four.
00:15:03
Nat
so um it's It's very different. like I think there is a huge gap on my opinion. as ah there is a We are aware that there is a huge gap between championship and ah WSL and it's visible with the the teams that are coming up from the championship and struggle to stay up ah in the WSL because it's just the rhythm is different.
00:15:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm. Hmm.
00:15:25
Nat
There is a also a huge gap further down. and Whereas in the championship there are teams that are already professional well you will be surprised by those in tier 3 and 4 there are of course ah different level but there are and in several several tier 4 and tier 3 are linked to the main side of the clubs so ah That's to say, for example, QPR is linked to the QPR club, so to championship men's side, the not they ah not the trust. and there And some of the team are getting semi-pro, so that is a testimonial of the fact that the game overall is ah ah is growing. And those are also other avenues for young players, but also coaches, and anyone, any expertise in football,
00:16:17
Nat
to have a career.
00:16:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm.
00:16:20
Nat
And I think i think and not much ah has been said ah or as ah or they are not they are more local clubs. So i today I had the opportunity to attend QPR Women Against Norwich, QPR 121, which was so much need. And it was played at the Loftus Road Stadium, so at the main stadium of the QPR men, which is, I found it very interesting and very um empowering because ah also this weekend, as you will know, WSL teams and championship teams played in the big stadium. So I think there is a legacy there and I would really encourage you ah if you have a local team, because there are so many, to attend one of those games. Cheap prizes, 5-10 quid to get in, and ah good atmosphere.
00:17:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm hmm. I just wanted to point out one thing. Sorry, I was on TikTok today scrolling as I normally do. um

Challenges and Support for Local Teams

00:17:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
And there was ah some man who was talking about how we're trying to kick the men out of their stadiums and talking about them being the men's stadiums and the women should have their own.
00:17:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I know, it's ridiculous. I just wanted to say, what badge are the players wearing on their chest? What badge are they wearing on their shirts? If it's a QPR badge or if it's a Southampton badge, then why can't they play? And besides that, what's it even got to do with, you know, these men? Like Leah Williams said, she doesn't like rugby, but she doesn't go online to talk about how much she doesn't like rugby.
00:18:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
Why do you have to comment on it? Why can't you just not go to the game? If you if you disagree with women's football being in the main stadium, just don't go. you know There's no, why do you have to go and comment about it and say, anyway, yeah, sorry.
00:18:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
I just wanted to bring that in there.
00:18:28
Nat
but it was There was no other game played, so what is, I don't understand, what is the...
00:18:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, exactly.
00:18:35
Nat
ah
00:18:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
They, well, it's a thing of um the comment was, ah the caption was that women were trying to um get the men out of their own stadiums. I was like, yeah, absolutely. No, absolutely not.
00:18:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Anyway, so how many teams are there in ah the third and fourth tiers?
00:19:02
Nat
That is a good question. so in the I think there are two different sides, the north and the ah the

Structure of Lower Women's Football Tiers

00:19:11
Nat
south, for the tier three.
00:19:13
Nat
And then there are four sides for tier four, so they are divided in region. And depending on the numbers, ah honestly, I am bad. I haven't done my research properly.
00:19:26
Nat
But let's say several.
00:19:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
This way.
00:19:29
Nat
But London has a lot, because even some of the ah clubs have um are from grassroots.
00:19:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
like
00:19:35
Nat
so For example, Cuppiara has a history, but, um like, Actonians just to know named another one. doesn't have really a history behind, if not ah is a grassroots club. So I think it's the the variety is quite ah is quite important as well. And these girls, but you know, it's travel quite far because, you know, ah southeast it might be quite big. ah and And most of them have a full time job. And on the top of that, they do that on the side. They train three or two times a
00:20:10
Nat
ah per week so my interest when I was ah ah supporting that was like how can you manage it to someone that has a full-time job that needs to come delivered during training and also in the weekend needs to come and deliver during the weekend and maybe they have families so it's it's very some some of them aspire are young talent that aspire to go higher some other are talent that are
00:20:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:20:36
Nat
coming back from the ladder you know that they can't but for for what required the game they cannot keep up ah anymore for age to the WSRO championship.
00:20:47
Nat
So it's it's quite a broad and different kind of plays that you have there. So um that's why I encourage it. But the atmo atmosphere is very unique. You can almost go to the pitch, get pictures with them.
00:20:59
Nat
So, you know, it's like old style in a way, women's football.
00:21:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:21:03
Nat
And when I say old style, like before it was so professional, but I'm um i'm envisioning not more than five years and it would be exact, like it would be much bigger. and possibly but if not semi pro if not pro at least semi pro pro for everyone and not just the expenses paid.
00:21:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Wow, that is an amazing thought. And yeah, I hope we get there. I can just, yeah, I was just thinking about like, if you have a really bad day at work and then you have to go to training and you have to try and put your all into training. And what if you've just kind of been shouted at by your boss or just had a really bad day at work and then you have to go and perform. It must be. yeah
00:21:49
Nat
so And then I wrap up with saying that some of the girls I met during my journey, they had were engineering, there were ah you know they had were managers, they were doctors, they were um nurses, and then they took everything out and come and performed two hours in the pitch, go home, start again the next day, and then go to jail. It's just ah is the dedication is second um to no one.
00:22:16
Nat
um Yeah, it's just amazing what is behind the scene.
00:22:21
Nat

Global Sports Podcast Network
Okay. So for our last topic of today, uh, we're going to go and do what has become my kind of favorite part of podcasts, I think is having a look at leagues around the world today. Um, and see what's been happening. So starting across the pond in America, Jonathan Giraldes

International Women's Leagues Update

00:23:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
Washington spirit beats the defending champions Gotham in the semi-final of the championship. So.
00:23:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
Over there, I think, it I think this is how it works. So you have like the normal league and then you have the top, I think it's six teams or play in kind of like a competition with each other, where they go through the quarterfinals, semi-finals, and then final and whoever wins the final wins the league, essentially. Um, so Washington spirit beats the defending champions Gotham in the semi-final. Esme Morgan was playing who's a lioness who we'll all know it was Jess Carter against Esme Morgan.
00:23:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
Um, it ended up going to penalties. There was a masterclass by the spirit keeper, Aubrey Kingsbury. She saved every Gotham penalty. There were, um, three failed pens from Gotham. And yeah, they were not very good penalties, I must admit, but she, and they were good saves. Um, it was, yeah, it was quite an amazing game to watch.
00:24:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
Esme Morgan played, I think 106 minutes. Uh, Jess Carter played a little bit less, but it was great to see them both, um, out there doing well. Over in Germany, Bayern won five nil today. Uh, an interesting one, Georgia Stanway, my favorite Lioness, so I will talk about her, was subbed off quite early on the 66th minute. She normally plays 90 minutes. So especially with the news about Ella Thun today.
00:24:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
who's gonna be out for at least six weeks. um Yeah, I really hope Stanway is okay and that's not injury related. um There's also some, I won't go into this too much, but there was also some sad news at a buy-in that their number one goalie, Marla Gross, who is one of my favorite players as well, um has been diagnosed with a malignant tumor, so will be out um indefinitely. But a big thing to actually,
00:25:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
focus on is how Bayan have been supportive to her. So as soon as they found out about this, they extended her contract. So of course, she'll continue to have access to the medical facilities and really good doctors and continue to get paid. um So they did that as soon as they came out. It was very touching today. There was kind of lots of tributes. And yeah, it was just really nice. She is like she seems to be just a brilliant person as well as a great goalkeeper. She um really kind of shouts out about women in STEM, so science, technology and engineering, um as well as football. I think i think she's at uni to become an engineer of some kind as well. um So yeah, just a brilliant player. So all the best to her. we won't We won't do any speculation or anything, but yeah, just all the best.
00:26:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
So over in Italy, Napoli Fiorentina finished goalless straw. Juve I Fiorentina are in second at the moment. Over in France, PSG I to keep top spot ahead of Lyon. Mary-Ups again playing so we can firmly put this. Mary-Ups isn't their starting keeper to bed. She is their starting keeper.
00:26:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
In the Netherlands, there's been some interesting results. So Iax beat Utrecht 1-0 with a goal by who I think is going to become a much bigger name in the future, Lily Johans, who was deciding between the US and the Netherlands national team. She decided on the US national team. ah There's been a lot of talk about her. she's I think she's 19 or 20 and just a brilliant emerging talent.
00:27:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
PSV are currently top on goal difference. ah It definitely looks like a three horse race between IX, Twent and PSV. So I think that's pretty much a roundup of the European leagues. Was there anything else that we need to pick up on that we haven't talked about from either the WSL and WSL?

Let me say that Roma won the Adobe Rome against the Lazio 2-1 so I'm just very proud of that because I'm a Roma fan and also that means that there and also I think Assimilan lost today against Como

So in the Italian League, there are some interesting results. I'm very baffled that Fiorentina and Napoli was a draw simply because where Napoli is in the in the table, which is quite low and there has not been performing greatly, ah whereas Fiorentina, I don't know what happened there because they were quite ambitious and they did very good games. So I just wanted to add that that
00:28:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, that is really interesting. So where are Roma in the league?
00:28:27
Nat
I think they are... they I think they're second?
00:28:33
Nat
but
00:28:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
quite interesting. I don't, it's the one that I don't really know that much about.
00:28:37
Nat
But... Yeah, yeah, um but it's but... It's a little bit complicated. No, actually, see, I'm lying. Roma is full. I'm always put at a second, but Fiorentina is second, to be fair, bad on me.
00:28:54
Nat
but Roma is now 21 points whereas Juventus is 26 and Fiorentina is 22.
00:29:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm-hmm.
00:29:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh, wow.
00:29:12
Nat
And Como is 5th. So very close to Roma as well, so watch out to them. i wouldn't I didn't expect them to be in the middle of the table and very close to the first fourth spot, but here you go.
00:29:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Maybe if I just say Manchester United a second, then they'll just be second. pat yes
00:29:27
Nat
Mercury 13.
00:29:35
Nat
oh Let's try that. Let's try that. You know, like, unfortunately, you know, yeah I had to Google it, but I'm just like a fan of Roma.
00:29:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah oh
00:29:44
Nat
So for me, when Roma win is up on the table, right?
00:29:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
but
00:29:46
Nat
That's my mentality.
00:29:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, of course.
00:29:47
Nat
That's what fair mentality is, right? yeah you

Maybe I'll finish with a little bit of talk about Manchester United's game today then. ah They won 2-0 against Leicester. ah Goals from Elizabeth Turland and Salim Bizet.
00:30:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
And yeah, it was a similar performance than we've been seeing quite a lot of the season, which was quite, um I would say, muted from United. We're very unbalanced in midfield.
00:30:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
um I think we've made some great signings. I

love Janssen, Dom Janssen, who we got from Wolfsburg. She's become one of many favourites, but I just think we're not utilising her correctly. I ah don't think that Mark Skinner knows exactly where to put her, um because she has to be playing, because she's got that quality. She's so good, so she kind of has to be starting, but then it's where does she start?
00:30:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's just not really clicking at the moment, I think. And going forward, it feels like we have quite often you have Elizabeth Turlin, Grace Clinton, Celine Bizette, just kind of almost in the graveyard shift where we're kind of just lumping long balls up to them and kind of hoping they do something fantastic, which quite often they do. And today they did. So I'm not going to complain too much. um But so, yeah, that was United and Leicester.
