Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello, hello and welcome to Beyond the Pitch, Daily Women's Football podcast brought to you by the Global Sport Podcast Network. Today you have your two favourite Italians back again, me, Katarina and the lovely Pargina here with Al.
00:00:28
Paige
Padgett is sticking, you know, I'm telling you.
00:00:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah you but That's what you wanted to be, Italia.
00:00:33
Paige
but
00:00:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's what your name translated

FIFPro World XI Insights

00:00:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
in Italian. and Lovely. like So it's me and Paige and the topics today are going to be the list of 11 best players from fifth, bro.
00:00:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
final group games for the women's league cup and UEFA promising to raise technology standard at the Euro 2025 next year in Switzerland. But let's start with our first topic. So fifth pro list of 11 best players. Very excited. Five lionesses. Pretty incredible. Also, they were in there last year too. Great achievement. I think last year it was more lionesses.
00:01:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
um interest in that this year there is also a bit more variety in nationality.
00:01:22
Paige
Yeah, no, I think it's a ah good list. I think when you look at all the those that were nominated, I think. I wouldn't say that there's anyone, I don't think that I would have thought actually you probably deserved more a vote. And I think we've previously talked about things, awards that were voted for by fans, right? And now this one we're talking about is voted by the players themselves. And to me, that's like the biggest accolade you can receive is, you know, your fellow teammates, your fellow professionals giving you
00:01:53
Paige
that sort of nod of approval, if you will. um And I think that's a really valuable sort of little booster that you can get, isn't it? That when you're teammates or like players from around the world rate you and it's always nice to to sort of see. And yeah, as you said, having so many lionesses in there,
00:02:13
Paige
Even in a in a season where you know England haven't done anything from like a tournament perspective, we didn't participate you know in the Olympics, which would have potentially brought more pet moo players in. um i think yeah i think I think we should be proud of of the lionesses that have made it in for sure.

Celebrating Marta's Legacy

00:02:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, for anyone that is listening and maybe hasn't had the opportunity to have a look at the list, I'm just going to go through it quickly. So as a goalkeeper, we have Mary Herbst, defenders, Lucy Bronz, Olga Carmona, Alex Greenwood, midfielder, Aitana Bonmati, Alexia Putella, and Kira Walsh.
00:02:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
And forward, so basically the whole Barcelona team forward, Barbara Banda, and Linda Casado, Lauren James, and Marta.
00:03:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
Marta is Marta. That's it. Just one day.
00:03:04
Paige
Yeah.
00:03:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
You don't need anything else.
00:03:06
Paige
Nah.
00:03:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's like Marta. That's it. Marta.
00:03:09
Paige
Yeah. You know you've met legendary status. Well, to be fair, she entered the world legendary, didn't she?
00:03:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
but
00:03:15
Paige
Because she never even attempted to put another name in there. She's like a Rolandinho for that.
00:03:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:03:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
Very true, right? He's like, what's the name?
00:03:24
Paige
Brazilian, Brazilian standing.
00:03:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
They're like, you're what? It's just, that's just the way it is, isn't it?
00:03:28
Paige
Yeah. There's never a question. Who is that now?
00:03:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:03:32
Paige
Nah, it's Martha, mate. Martha, mate.
00:03:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, it's not very interesting to see some new ah entries in there. As I said, different nationalities as well. Nice to see Marta. It's just, I think, I don't know. I don't know if this, will we ever see another player like that? I have no idea. Like the fact that, you know, she's of a certain age, let's put it this way. And she still wins championships and accolades and everything. And it's just like she never gives up. It's just incredible, really.
00:04:08
Paige
Yeah, her story's a mad one. I remember, you know, growing up as as a youngster, obviously, because then I would be a grown up if I wasn't growing up, but I remember like looking at you know the women's game and stuff. and before Before we had you know all the infrastructure and stuff that we have now and Marta was still one of those players who you know you would you would Google up, you would search you know where she was, what she was doing, like how the game was kind of going for her because we didn't have the accessibility of social media as we do now.
00:04:38
Paige
um But it was still a name that you knew of, you know, she's, like you said, she's reached that legendary goat status where, you know, even in a list like this, where you think that there's so many potentially um talented other forwards that could make the list that are like peer rated, you know, she still gets in there and you know the stuff that she's done for Brazil but for women's football in general is just iconic and I hope this is not the last time because I hope that she forever continues but I think that you know should this be one of her last seasons you know
00:05:18
Paige
winning what she's won with Orlando Pride and potentially, you know, do more with them next season

Marta's Possible Retirement

00:05:24
Paige
and stuff. I think, yeah, what a way to sort of end your career and to be nominated and to make this list is a really true accolade that, yeah, she is just gonna add to her like bow of strings of bow, whatever the phrase is, where she's just won everything basically. So go ahead, well done you.
00:05:45
Paige
Uh, Linda is one I want to raise, but you can, if you have...
00:05:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. i yeah i mean there's there's a side of me that there's a There's a part of me that thought she was going to retire, to be honest.
00:05:56
Paige
Yeah.
00:05:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
I was like, okay, she won the league with Orlando Pride, great achievement, et cetera. Maybe she will retire at the top of her career in that way. And then I thought, nah, they are playing the World Cup in Brazil in two years.
00:06:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
That girl is still going to play.
00:06:11
Paige
Really well.
00:06:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
She's going to be there. She's going to be a part of it, or something that maybe be she will completely retire after that and it would be great what a great way of of as you said you know of ending the career but um interesting for me to see also ah you know the fact that for example Lauren James is there she's been out for quite a bit from from the game now during two injuries etc and exactly as you said you know the lionesses didn't really do incredible this year let's say but there's no much that you know they've achieved or anything so um it's nice to see them still there and the people still
00:06:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
um, you know, appreciate their work. And and for me, it's like one of the player I would like to see more recognize it's always Kira Walsh. I always feel like she doesn't get enough credit for the type of player that she is, what she does on the field, the difference that she makes. Uh, I think probably really one of the best in the world in her, uh, position.
00:07:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
um So nice to see her there as well. What do you think?
00:07:25
Paige
Yeah I think i think she's a obviously a player ah that's really talented and I think we may have touched on it um when we discussed the lionesses and their performance against the USA but she's certainly a player that you recognise isn't there but she's also a player that you recognise when the tactics have been shaped to stop her service to stop her ability to get on the ball because you know countries have have had to realise and I'm sure teams within Spain have had to realise that the play just goes through her naturally so often and even if it's just the you know the most simple of connecting the dots kind of thing she's just always a part of it and I think that
00:08:11
Paige
you know, we've we've kind of said before that there's maybe no real challenge to her position um within the lionesses squad but like who is going to be that next person or do we just try and adapt the way she plays slightly and adapt the tactics so that she has a bit more of an impact now that clubs are starting to figure you know her out a little bit or figure the tactics that especially Sarita Beekman puts in place. But yeah, I definitely think she she's a major talent and she does
00:08:43
Paige
she does sort of go under the radar just slightly with that with um that in terms of not getting major limelight, but like everybody recognises how much of a technically talented player she is. um But Linda Quesada was one that i like I loved watching her um in the in the World Cup and I've loved watching her you know throughout the season in parts and she's just such a talent and I think You know, you can see that she wears especially like the Columbia shirt with like such pride. And I think that as, you know, a young player who is certainly still learning her trade, probably in

Players' Aspirations and Moves

00:09:24
Paige
the same way that Lauren James was like a couple of years ago.
00:09:27
Paige
um And I think that, you know, she's just a real major talent and to be up there with, you know, the likes of Puteus Bobmati, like there are massive names to to be up next to, even at her really like young age. um But I think it's still very, very well deserved. So I think she's got a really massive bright future. And it's just a like a shame in some ways that we kind of don't see more of her because she's not from like a European country so we kind of only see her every four years unless you like tune into you know the South American tournaments and stuff but
00:10:04
Paige
Yeah, I really rate her. I think she's she's a massive talent and I think she's only going to improve within that Real Madrid team and I'm excited to see sort of where her next move could be, what that could look like. I'd love to see her playing in the WSL and I think maybe in the next couple years, um depending on how things go over in Spain, like that could be potentially her next move.
00:10:26
Paige
And it would just be interesting to see which club decides to to sort of make that swoop for her and who she suits most. But yeah, seeing her in the WSL would be be pretty and mint mint.
00:10:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah I don't think i don't mean the Spaniards like to come here to play, to be honest.
00:10:41
Paige
Well,
00:10:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
There's not many of them.
00:10:44
Paige
no
00:10:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
not I think it's really hard to convince them, and let's also not forget that um you know Madrid is, um Madrid, Spain in general, but Madrid especially, it's like it's such a multicultural city, but there are so many Latinos in there.
00:10:45
Paige
I know. I know. I just think it's difficult.
00:11:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah So you like you're away from home, but you're at home, if that makes sense. and i think that And I think that makes such a difference because that is not, how can I explain?
00:11:08
Paige
Yours, yours.
00:11:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
you're You're not talking about millions of pounds of difference. It's not like she's going to come to the WSL and she will get like so much money to make it worth it. And I think it'd be like, well, I play for an awesome team.
00:11:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. We have ah awesome opportunities. This feels like home. It's really hard to convince them to come here.
00:11:35
Paige
Yeah, ah I just think that the the growth of the WSL might start to become a draw for people a little bit more because of you know, all the great things that it's doing.
00:11:45
Paige
And yeah, like, I don't know. i just I just think I would like to see her. I don't necessarily know that she will, but like, it would be good to see her, you you know, in WSL and just bring in some Latina flair to it.
00:11:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:12:00
Paige
And, ah you know, who knows?
00:12:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
sure
00:12:03
Paige
Who knows? Maybe her dream is to land in London or Liverpool.
00:12:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah yeah i'm north saying no i'm just i'm yeah i'm I'm not saying no, I'm just drawing a conclusion that it's really hard to bring the Spaniards here, the Spaniards or anyone who's playing in Spain, to just really convince them to to leave that country and come here.
00:12:14
Paige
yeah Yeah, exactly that.
00:12:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
But as you said, you never know, you never know.
00:12:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, so the women

Women's League Cup Review

00:12:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
league's cup final fixtures for the group games. Okay, impressive results. Some of them like, wow.
00:13:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
And a lot, a lot, a lot of goals again, a lot of them. So to name a few, your team buttered Everton.
00:13:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:13:15
Paige
If only the game wasn't cancelled last week, it'd been the same result.
00:13:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't know. We don't know. my Is it?
00:13:23
Paige
aye I'd like to think so.
00:13:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
Okay.
00:13:26
Paige
I'd like to hope so.
00:13:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
Okay. I don't know. Maybe you were saved by the by the storm. I don't know. I have no idea.
00:13:32
Paige
Saved! Wow, you sound like a real Tottenham fan right now.
00:13:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh, well yeah. and I don't think we need to go, you know, boat our boat.
00:13:40
Paige
I mean, we can go there.
00:13:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
at all
00:13:41
Paige
We can go there.
00:13:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
i don't I don't think we should. i don't think i think I think all of us are still very like, what did happen on Sunday. what it's got like
00:13:49
Paige
OK, cool. We'll leave it there then.
00:13:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
and
00:13:52
Paige
We'll we'll park the bus.
00:13:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
honest Honestly, even I was there working at the stadium and we were like, wait a minute, what's going on? like Is this really happening? It is happening.
00:14:03
Paige
It was just cold, mate. It was just cold. That's all I can say.
00:14:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
what
00:14:07
Paige
And Tottenham just, just between Tottenham.
00:14:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
who Yeah, I mean, he's incredible. he's ah I mean, we spoke about ah last week when, you know, he won the to PFA award and hes he's my favorite player, so I cannot hate him. It was just shocking. Anyway, um um I'm quite happy in a sort of way that Chelsea's success is again due to an Italian being there. So that's that's quite, you know, that makes me a little bit proud. But anyway, let's let's go back to the um to the Women's League Cup. So, yeah, ah Liverpool, Everton, Fournier, Manchester, United, Newcastle, United, eight goals in that game.
00:14:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah
00:14:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't know. Did you watch any of the highlights or did you go did you were you able to watch any of the games?
00:14:59
Paige
I wasn't. I was at training and then straight to bed because I was ill, but um I think they're definitely highlights. I'm going to want to watch all these goals. Like there's often times where I just wish the WSL had, you know, more goals per game because some of the goals that, you know, the girls are scoring are are unreal, but I just think, you know, obviously goals are the most exciting part of any game, right?
00:15:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:15:21
Paige
But
00:15:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
ye
00:15:22
Paige
Yeah, eight goal thriller. I'm surprised, you know, I didn't concede in as many as they are, to be honest. um I'm surprised by that because I thought, you know, first and foremost, the focus would be on securing, you know, being a bit more defensively robust and defensively secure. But I think, you know, we've we've kind of mentioned it before, but, you know, Newcastle on their day, I think are a really good team and I just,
00:15:50
Paige
Yeah, maybe maybe that showed, and just United showed their quality at times, but goals, goals, goals. We love to see it.
00:15:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. And also ah very happy for West Ham. Another win after a really good win at the weekend as well. So I think he's going to boost their mood a little bit more. Very excited about the London City Lionesses winning 5-2 with Portsmouth. As I said, again, soft spot for them. Really hope to see them in the WSL next year. Brighton trash in Bristol 6-2. So another a game with eight goals.
00:16:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Leicester City, big, comfortable win birming with against Birmingham, sorry, 5-2. And then my team winning again, yay! We won at the weekend and we won again, yeah. So just mood booster. So we went to, sorry, apologies. We went to the home of Crystal Palace and we came away with a victory, only 2-0.
00:16:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
considering the amount of goals in all the other games, we were the easier one, let's say, but as we say, a win is a win. And then Aston Villa winning 4-1 with Charlton Athletic. Very interesting. So ah top of the groups, we have United and Liverpool for Group A, Durham and Blackball Rivers for Group B. For Group C, we have Western United and London City Lionesses.
00:17:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
Group D, Brighton and Leicester and Group E, Moytame and Aston Villa. So I guess the next round will be very interesting too.
00:17:34
Paige
I'm sure it will be. Do we know in terms of the draw? like is that but Obviously they've played all of their games, so is it now it would just be an open draw from group A to E?
00:17:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think so.
00:17:49
Paige
Okay. Who do you want? Predictions?
00:17:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh, I'm have to say probably like we're going to play easier.
00:17:53
Paige
Hopes? Yeah.
00:18:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't know. Durham or Blackburn Rovers, maybe. ah I don't know. Leicester, we did it last year in the FA Cup. So I don't know.
00:18:14
Paige
You know, fancy a London City Lioness' visit, and then you can get yourself down to and be completely conflicted.
00:18:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't know. I wouldn't want to see it like, I don't know. I wouldn't want to see La London Derby again. I mean, I hope not.
00:18:32
Paige
Okay.
00:18:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
I hope not. Brighton, maybe although Brighton is doing super well, so it would be quite a, quite a scary opponent to have.
00:18:42
Paige
true
00:18:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
What about you? What about you?
00:18:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
I just want us to get to the final and win it, but that's it. Really?
00:18:51
Paige
and and then then then I don't know I think from my for me if you're gonna want to be the best you've got to play the best so I'd welcome you know a tough draw early on just because I think the boost of confidence that it could give us in this tournament but also in the league which is honestly I think what we need right now um we just need ah ah a thorough win and a good win over a good side and ah a real complete performance So, you know, I'm i'm happy to take um any of these big teams, bring on Spurs, bring on Villa. I think Villa game could be quite interesting, obviously, with Missy Bo-Kerns there. And I think that, you know, it could be a good game. um I don't think I'd want to draw anyone, like, so I don't want to play United. i'm I'm over having to play them bored of it.
00:19:45
Paige
and I think, yeah, I'd like to play, I'd like to play you lot, you know? I just think it would be, could be a good competitive game.
00:19:56
Paige
And like I said, if we can get a win against, you know, a good ah top team, it could be, it could be a good game and a good, a good moment of our season, really.
00:20:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
As a lot.
00:20:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Okay. Now, if you play as a lot, you know, especially if you play down here and not up there, then we, we, we can go and watch the game together.
00:20:12
Paige
Yeah.
00:20:18
Paige
Yeah, all right, let's go.
00:20:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
Right.
00:20:20
Paige
ill be the You can join me in the Liverpool end.
00:20:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's a deal.
00:20:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
Sure.

Technology in Women's Football

00:20:27
Paige
Now, I think it'll be a ah good next round and it'll be good to see who everyone draws and I'm sure we'll pick that up once we hear that draw.
00:20:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:20:41

00:21:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Right. Last but not least, I wanted to touch on the fact that Galactical yesterday published ah something about ah the UEFA raising standard of technology also for the women in Euro 2025, the tournament that will happen in Switzerland in July next year. ah They will implement the use of VAR, VAR, sorry.
00:21:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
goal-line technology and semi-automated offsides. Again, they're stating that they want to raise the standard of the games, the standard of everything, which is great.
00:21:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah But I just wanted us to touch on that a little bit. And obviously, you are a player, so you understand it even more. A player and a coach, if I'm not wrong, right?
00:21:52
Paige
I'm a referee, I'm triple threat.
00:21:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
And a referee! I didn't know you were also a referee. Wow! Okay.
00:21:58
Paige
Shuffle threat, anyway, triple threat.
00:21:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
Wow, then who better than speak about it than you? That is incredible. So anyway, what does it mean for the game and what do you think are the pros and cons? Maybe from all, so from like from a play and point of view and from a referee point of view.
00:22:17
Paige
I think it's just... Moving of the times isn't it? the It's such a now an expectation I think for you know all of these top level tournaments or top leagues to be implementing this sort of technology.
00:22:34
Paige
um I think everybody, male, female, men like men's game fan, women's game fan, will also will always have mixed opinions about VAR, the benefits or the sort of annoyingness that it can bring to any game, any league. But I think that just having it in there, you know, gives that opportunity for like, I don't know, just, I definitely think that there's there's benefits to it. I think obviously how it's done and how, you know, especially being alive in the stadium at times, you're very in the unclear as to what what's going on. um But from like a a game perspective, you know,
00:23:18
Paige
most people will always come at Liverpool for it but a lot of the goals that we've gained over the last few seasons seemingly are as a result of potentially VAR decisions but also there's been you know negatives that we've we've received also from it but I think that in a major tournament like this where you know the stakes are high where the interest is incredibly high why shouldn't we have the same technology that, you know, is used in all of the men's games, all of the men's tournaments, and it just seemed as a normal thing. um To me, the biggest exciting, and the the biggest sort of key piece that is the most exciting is the semi-automated offsides, because I was even watching a game last night, and just having that visual, I think, just completely changes. It was the Athletica Madrid game, and there was a

a goal and you know there was ah there was big questions initially and then as soon as you saw it with the technology it was just so clear and obvious and I think those sort of semi-automated visuals that you can get just just give you at least a little bit more confidence in the decisions and I think it gives maybe the refereeing aspect a little bit of a ah little bit more support and I think ultimately that's what these technologies are in place for, right? It's to you know give that referee that additional support and backing when you know ah there is or isn't a good or bad decision or a mis-decision in there and I think it will only push the the women's game along really.
00:24:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's interesting to know. I think it's um it's there is a massive debate about it, right? So sometimes you when ah when there is a goal happening and then there is like VAR check and people are like, oh, you know it it never used to be like that. It was just now it's like it doesn't feel the same as before, et cetera. But I remember going to watch my first rugby game and you know when when they go like that and it's like TMO and I remember watching it and I was like what is that and because because obviously I like my first very professional rugby game like I watched some games in Italy but they were more like grassroots kind of things obviously not TMO
00:25:25
Paige
Yeah.
00:25:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
And my friend was like, oh yeah, you know, they check the, they, they go back and they have a look at the video and they make, and I was like, that is so good. Like they should do the same in football because it's also much harder to then, you know, uh, how can I say, well, please remember I come from Italy.
00:25:45
Paige
Yeah.
00:25:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think the countries. in Europe probably where, I don't know, the the corruption of referees was the highest at a certain point in time, for sure.
00:26:06
Paige
Yeah.
00:26:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
Not that I was aware back in the days when I was there, but, you know, the more I go and the more I'm like, wow, that was so obvious. And they were like, especially when they saw, they show certain videos and they like, it was so obvious.
00:26:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think it also protects the referees from that type of things, if that makes sense, because it's like, hey, they might have done a mistake. They are humans. And, you know, I've never been a referee.
00:26:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
Like, I can only imagine you can't really be always somewhere, everywhere. We have a very different.
00:26:36
Paige
Yeah, there's more bias everywhere.
00:26:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
We have a very different vision from what you have.
00:26:39
Paige
You can't.
00:26:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
We also have a vision from like 30 different cameras around the stadium. So we can watch it from every point of view. And you are there and you have to make a decision in a split seconds.
00:26:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
And, you know, how many referees have made wrong decisions in the past, even though they were not corrupted, there was was nothing like that. Just human error. And I think, yeah, technology is there to help us.
00:27:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Then why not doing? Yeah, sure. Might take a little bit of away from the game but again as you said it's just question of getting used to it like now we are super used to it like sometimes we go and watch the games. Even on tv and straight away we are like oh this got to be a vr they have to check it is already started to get into our.
00:27:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
you know, into our culture of football because you're just like, I don't think that was a goal. I think that was offside. Okay, great. So VAR is checking it. So you make sure that it is in fact correct and right. But also with like red cards, yellow cards, all of that type of things, you know, as a referee, you might see from one side and you think like, yeah, all right. It was all right. And then everybody else is like, you man, that's a red card.
00:27:52
Paige
Yeah.
00:27:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
But but you you don't see from that side, from whatever reason, you know, once the TV sees from every different side and then you're able to make a decision. I mean, every other industry really based their decision on data.
00:28:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
So why not do any data as well? So for me, it's fantastic. And I think. In general, women are a bit more adaptable to these type of things. They are like, yeah, fine. This is the way it is from now on. That's the way it is. You know, sometimes it's going to be an advantage for us and sometimes it's going to be a disadvantage for us. But this is the way it is. Whilst I think for the men, it was a bit harder, A, because as I said, it's much harder to, you know, corrupt the referees.
00:28:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
And so to kind of like play the games as you want it, but also because, you know, before sometimes some clubs used to get away with a lot of things and now it's like, no, it just doesn't happen.
00:28:49
Paige
Yeah, I also think you know in the the grand scheme, like football for the longest time just wasn't changing at all.
00:28:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:28:56
Paige
It was very was very stagnant. It was very stale. um And then obviously the Premier League came in and you know completely reinvented what football was in England.
00:29:10
Paige
like It was literally down on a slippery slope. And now the reinvent the reinventing of you know of football in the Premier League. and that's always been something that they've pushed is like being at the front of you know new adaptations, new technology, you know changes to laws of the game. Obviously like from a like a player and club perspective as well, like that we've we've always seen the Premier League being at the the front of all of these changes, so why when it comes to a technology and technological advancement would we not expect the same from UK domestic leagues here. I think the biggest thing from a VAR perspective, and i I do hate talking about it only because I just think it draws away from the rest of the 90 minutes that occurs in a game, but it to me it's the it's the lack of communication that occurs
00:30:01
Paige
from like the referee or you know from anyone around the stadium. And correct me if I'm wrong, you you mentioned going to watch rugby games. The refs are mic'd up, right? So when there's like a VAR decision or TMO decision, are they then communicating that with the stadium? And then is there an next explanation as to what is being checked and why it's being checked or why it's being changed?
00:30:23
Paige
or is it still a bit lost within the stands and the stadium as a whole when you're live in there? Because I'm assuming I'm like in the background and on the TV and stuff, yes you'll be explained as to you know what they're looking at because you get preview clips or whatever it might be but that to me is the biggest part where there's there's such ah a missed opportunity to just explain the decision a little bit.
00:30:43
Paige
If you're going to spend 10 minutes checking the decision you know through VAR at Startley Park then
00:30:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:30:47
Paige
take 30 seconds to just explain what is being checked, why it's being checked and then it just gives sort of everybody is is in the know unless people are like vexed about VAR taking so long because they're actually up up to date with what's occurring.
00:31:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I agree. I mean, yes. i If I think about it, yes, when I've been to some of the, I don't think all of them, or maybe I was just distracted because I don't particularly care.
00:31:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
But I think the referee does say, so it's like, it's a try, it's not a try, not a try because, I don't know, the player didn't touch the ball or whatever.
00:31:27
Paige
Yeah.
00:31:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
There is a short explanation of saying that. But to be honest also, they are shown on the video, like, you know, on the big screen in the, yeah, so you can you can see.
00:31:35
Paige
All right. So the VAR is shown live kind of thing as to what the question.
00:31:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
And now ah they they repeat the repeat of what they're looking at is shown so that you can see it straight away.
00:31:43
Paige
Ah.
00:31:45
Paige
Right.
00:31:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
But I think they do the same. Don't they do the same at some of the football games as well?
00:31:51
Paige
No, they've changed it now.
00:31:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
OK.
00:31:53
Paige
So there is an opportunity to see it, which is, I don't know, again, a bit of a question mark kind of thing. Like why have they done it? If there's, you know, if there's all transparency with it, but yeah, I just think it, you know, it's always going to be, you're always going to have people that are for it, people that are against it, but also that's football. You've got people that love aspects and hate aspects. They love teams, they hate teams, they love players, they hate players. like that's football so we're never ever ever ever ever going to agree on something but I think as long as we can see the positives and they're consistent and the approach is consistent that's where we should always be sort of happy and satisfied with the outcomes and I think for a tournament like the Euros it's a massive thing and teams will
00:32:38
Paige
Teams, I'm sure during it will love it. Teams during it, I'm sure will hate it. But ultimately, as long as we come out you know in on that final game and both of those teams in the final have experienced you know positives and negatives as a result of it, and it all balances out, they're not going to say, oh, we won the Euros, but we hated VAR. They're going to focus on the fact that they've won the Euros, right? And that' that's football. there's There's always going to be things that we disagree on. so Yeah, bring on the, bring on the tech, do it in the right way. Try and make it transparent when you're, you know, you're talking with the crowd or, you know, fans, you know, behind the TV screens. But yeah, let's move with the times and let's get women's football, you know, up with the technological advancements that we've we've got in the men's game.
00:33:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, that's great. But I think it's all we have time for today. So thank you for joining us on another episode of Beyond the Patch. And we look forward to welcoming you to the next one.
00:33:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's a goodbye from me.
00:33:38
Paige
and as a child from me
00:33:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh, yeah, the Italian way.
