Speaker
Welcome to Stay Sparked.
00:00:03
Speaker
On this show, we explore how to stay inspired in the modern world through the most profound lessons from Burning Man, relationships, entrepreneurship, psychedelics, spirituality, travel, and more.
00:00:16
Speaker
On today's episode of Stay Sparked, we are continuing the conversation on money mindset.
00:00:21
Speaker
Yes, what sort of mindsets are we holding on to?
00:00:25
Speaker
What sort of mindsets is it good for us to embody and how do we apply that out into the world?
00:00:32
Speaker
We looked at some of the teachers who have helped us, looked at healthy skepticism and also the positive attitudes of generosity that can keep the constriction down and the flow going.
00:00:45
Speaker
Enjoy the episode.

00:00:53
Speaker
So we are here to share conversations aimed to inspire and light you up.
00:00:57
Speaker
Thank you so much for listening.
00:00:59
Speaker
If you've been enjoying them, leave us a message on Apple Podcasts, like Brett did when he said, each episode takes you on a captivating journey of inspiration and motivation.
00:01:09
Speaker
The hosts have a natural ability to engage listeners, making every topic relatable and thought provoking.
00:01:16
Speaker
Brett, it looks like you hit four stars instead of five, which we really want five stars because you kind of brought down our average and we're trying not to hold it against you.
00:01:23
Speaker
We're a little angry, but maybe that's something we'll work through in another episode.
00:01:25
Speaker
Anyways, thanks for your review.
00:01:26
Speaker
Please leave us more reviews.
00:01:34

Sharing Gratitude and Nature Experiences
00:01:56
Speaker
And we always like to start off the shows with a little bit of gratitude sharing.
00:02:00
Speaker
So, Betsy, would you start us off?
00:02:04
Speaker
I, today I'm really grateful for the new habit that I'm forming for a summertime eating practice, I'll call it.
00:02:13
Speaker
Um, so I have been getting to incorporate some really, um, fun ways of getting,
00:02:19
Speaker
fresh food into my diet and simplifying a lot.
00:02:23
Speaker
And so I've been focusing on making sure to get a garden vegetables as much as I can.
00:02:28
Speaker
So I have, um, some different vegetables in my garden and I've been connecting with some other friends that have vegetables in their garden and we've been getting to share food for right from the land.
00:02:39
Speaker
And so that has felt really good.
00:02:41
Speaker
And I'm so grateful to experience the abundance of nature and learning how to eat right off the land.
00:02:49
Speaker
nice oh that's great that's great for sure so cool my gratitude for today is i finally got to get some nature time it's been a while i think i've mentioned before that i've been needing that and i finally got it with a handful of friends out in joshua tree which was the hottest weekend of the year so far but uh those early you know those early mornings and around you know
00:03:18
Speaker
sunrise sunset hours out there were just magical and sublime with a nice breeze going through it and it was really perfect and like just being out overnight under the stars which i haven't seen stars like that in a long time so it's the last time i was out there so it was uh really nice to just drop in relax and feel my breath for a couple days so uh with some really lovely friends as well so that was that was a good time and still still buzzing from that so definitely feeling the gratitude
00:03:46
Speaker
Well, I'm going to continue this nature appreciation.
00:03:49
Speaker
I got to visit Esalen for a day last week.
00:03:52
Speaker
And Esalen is a retreat center on the cliffs in Big Sur, where redwoods meets cliffs meets ocean meets hot springs.
00:04:02
Speaker
And it is a just absolute magical place where the natural world kind of converges.
00:04:09
Speaker
and has a history of humans coming together and sharing their paths of growth and teaching one another.
00:04:15
Speaker
And it's just, there's something about the energy there that I just was absolutely inspiring.
00:04:20
Speaker
And so I'm super grateful for the location, the nature and the people that have added their energy to it over, over the many, many decades.
00:04:32
Speaker
And so I said, you,
00:04:35
Speaker
Had you been there before?
00:04:36
Speaker
This was my third visit.
00:04:37
Speaker
My previous two visits were Burning Man based.
00:04:39
Speaker
I went to a Burning Man staff retreat there.
00:04:42
Speaker
And then I went and took a class for a week on Burning Man history there once.
00:04:47
Speaker
This is my first time coming back, just enjoying the hot springs itself.
00:04:53
Speaker
You're sparking me.
00:04:53
Speaker
Makes me want to go.
00:04:56
Speaker
Yeah, it's something else.
00:04:58
Speaker
It's really, I would say if you were on the edge of Woo, that place will take you way over.
00:05:06
Speaker
It is so incredible.
Exploring Influential Financial Thinkers and Books
00:05:11
Speaker
So, uh, we have been having an ongoing conversation about money and money attitudes, and we're going to continue that today.
00:05:19
Speaker
We've got so much to talk about.
00:05:20
Speaker
We've even got guests coming in our future episodes, but today we're going to, the three of us continue talking about, uh, the impact of money, some of our teachers of money, and maybe we can start with that as either of you have a, a, an influential voice in your evolving attitudes about money.
00:05:38
Speaker
Yeah, well, I love continuing this conversation with you guys because we have Money Mindset Episode 1, and we just had so much to talk about.
00:05:49
Speaker
We had to cut it off early.
00:05:50
Speaker
So I'm really excited to keep this conversation going with you guys.
00:05:53
Speaker
There's so much to...
00:05:54
Speaker
learn and discover.
00:05:56
Speaker
And I know I personally have been on a journey of wanting to study money mindset and learn about financial literacy and explore my own belief systems.
00:06:06
Speaker
And one of my inspirations for learning about money mindset is that kind of an unassuming name that maybe you've heard of, maybe you haven't.
00:06:17
Speaker
Her name is Florence Scovel Shin.
00:06:20
Speaker
And she is one of the pioneers of mindset work.
00:06:25
Speaker
So she started with The Word is Your Wand is one of her books.
00:06:30
Speaker
I think it was in the early 1900s.
00:06:32
Speaker
And she spoke a lot about money, mindset, wealth mindset, prosperity mindset, how we speak to ourselves, how we relate to the exchange of money in our
00:06:44
Speaker
hands, how we open ourselves to opportunities, also scarcity, how that, you know, kind of comes in and out of our consciousness.
00:06:53
Speaker
And so she has definitely been one of my sparks of inspiration on my own personal journey of discovering my prosperity mindset.
00:07:03
Speaker
So if you haven't heard of Florence Govachin, she's a really fascinating woman.
00:07:09
Speaker
She was actually the mentor of Louise Hay.
00:07:13
Speaker
who Louise Hay is many more people usually have heard of that name.
00:07:18
Speaker
She's also a pioneer of affirmations in the sixties, seventies, eighties, nineties, even.
00:07:26
Speaker
I'd have to look her up.
00:07:28
Speaker
Um, for me, the, the money, the money mindset people early on in my, you know,
00:07:37
Speaker
I guess my seeking of that kind of fell upon the speakers that we're all familiar with.
00:07:43
Speaker
Let's say Tony Robbins, T Harv Eker was like, I think he had like the millionaire mindset, something like that.
00:07:53
Speaker
And definitely feel like I got some good, good perspectives on there that that started to help shape and form a positive money opinion with that.
00:08:01
Speaker
So I wouldn't say that they're certainly for everybody, but I do feel like I got some some good stuff out of there.
Healthy Skepticism and Financial Decision-Making
00:08:09
Speaker
More recently, I came upon an old book.
00:08:14
Speaker
called it works by an author of this anonymous author i think they found out who he was but he went by the initials rhj and it just had a it wasn't specifically about money but kind of just calling in the things that you're looking for and really pretty precise information it was a it was a short book but i definitely found it effective as well to um a
00:08:38
Speaker
apply a positive mindset towards attracting the things that I wanted to attract.
00:08:42
Speaker
Sometimes that was money.
00:08:44
Speaker
And we can also get into the idea later, I would like to, about how we're not so much interested in money, but we're interested in what the money represents to us.
00:08:55
Speaker
None of us are looking to be like Scrooge McDuck, like diving into a swimming pool filled with dollar bills or looking to be a dragon sitting on top of a big pile of gold in the back end of a cave.
00:09:10
Speaker
There probably are people like that.
00:09:12
Speaker
I know there are people like that.
00:09:13
Speaker
But I think a lot of us, we just want the things that the money would provide us, security, abundance, things like that, which we can definitely get into as well.
00:09:21
Speaker
But that book, It Works kind of focused on that.
00:09:25
Speaker
And recently I read a book that was really pretty cool, recommended by a friend by an author named Tasha Silver.
00:09:34
Speaker
And the book was titled It's Not Your Money, which was a definite interesting spin on how.
00:09:41
Speaker
the you know we we are we we exist in this ocean of you know financial energy much like a fish is in the swims around the ocean like describing water to a fish would be very hard because what do you mean this like this thing i'm swimming in and breathing through it's like yeah we're surrounded by by this money energy and it's not that challenging to just have it kind of flow your way but as long as you're not
00:10:08
Speaker
looking to the mindset this book kind of kind of teaches was you don't want it to flow to you want it to throw to flow through you you want to keep the current flowing and once you kind of adjust your life and your outlook and perspective for that you'll find that's like oh oh it's like this money just kind of keeps coming and i'm not trying to hold on to it i'm paying my bills and i'm doing the things that i want to do with it but you got to keep you got to keep it moving and keeping it moving
00:10:32
Speaker
Meaning, you know, donating, you know, to certain causes or supporting friends' businesses.
00:10:36
Speaker
And you kind of get out of a scarcity mindset.
00:10:39
Speaker
It helped to get me out of the scarcity mindset that has a way of just kind of creeping in if you're not careful.
00:10:46
Speaker
And it's like, no, okay, yeah, it's not my money.
00:10:48
Speaker
It's just flowing through me.
00:10:49
Speaker
And I've definitely seen an uptick in my, you know, income of my financial abundance this year as a result of, uh,
00:10:56
Speaker
kind of bringing, kind of making that one change.
00:10:58
Speaker
So Tasha Silver, It's Not Your Money is a good book.
00:11:02
Speaker
I love thinking about in terms of the flow of, you know, if, if my hands are clasped holding onto what I have, then they are not open to receive what's possible.
00:11:13
Speaker
And so that, that image or that visual of, of being constricted around money versus the flow and being open to money has kept me able to avoid that scarcity kind of constriction that I think you're talking about.
00:11:25
Speaker
I wanted the book that was the most influential for me early on was Rich Dad, Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki.
00:11:35
Speaker
And this idea that was just hit me so hard, this kind of difference between
00:11:44
Speaker
acquiring abundance via working hard versus acquiring abundance versus by having your money work for you.
00:11:53
Speaker
You know, and that this idea that I grew up with, if you want to make more money, you take on more work, you work harder, you take on more work, you work harder.
00:11:59
Speaker
And it just never quite clicked that that's not scalable.
00:12:03
Speaker
You can only have so many hours of your own labor.
00:12:06
Speaker
And that book really just snapped me out of that headspace, which is such a big difference.
00:12:12
Speaker
I think, you know, you can really tell someone who
00:12:15
Speaker
who, you know, when you're a kid, you try to, well, some kids, you know, you want to get, do more chores and some kids go, who can I hire to do some chores that then I can, you know, charge a price for and then hire more kids to wash windows
Personal Financial Breakthroughs and Mindset Shifts
00:12:30
Speaker
for me or something like that.
00:12:30
Speaker
And I think that was a huge snap.
00:12:33
Speaker
Now I should say before I finished my praise of that book that I tried to start listening to YouTube videos and
00:12:43
Speaker
a podcast of the same author recently and really was turned off by what I felt to be the coldness and the lack of humanity towards people struggling.
00:12:58
Speaker
And there was this kind of gamification of making money that had no compassion for the people that were being kicked out of their homes, for example.
00:13:09
Speaker
And there was a story he told specifically where he was kind of laughing at the frustration of a tenant who he was evicting.
00:13:16
Speaker
And I was just like, wow, wow, that seems like an incredibly high cost for wealth.
00:13:22
Speaker
to be closed off to the pain of your fellow human beings.
00:13:25
Speaker
So that's, I'm not a student of this author, but before I could suggest the book, I would say that I'm not a fan of that person any longer.
00:13:35
Speaker
I know the video where you speak.
00:13:38
Speaker
I saw that and had kind of the same reaction.
00:13:40
Speaker
And on the one hand, I mean, that was the same perspective I had.
00:13:46
Speaker
And I definitely also, and that's the one I still have, but I definitely also held the perspective or the outlook like, well, I mean...
00:13:56
Speaker
this is capitalism.
00:13:57
Speaker
This is the thing we're all doing.
00:14:01
Speaker
Or that is just like, you know, the idea of you are going to do capitalism or capitalism is going to do you.
00:14:07
Speaker
That's going to happen.
00:14:08
Speaker
So you can either play the game or get played by the game, which is a super cynical, crappy outlook, I think.
00:14:17
Speaker
it's got a lot of validity to it as well so i don't know maybe we can touch on that a little bit as well um i don't know if that's part of this whatever we're trying to do here or this conversation but
00:14:27
Speaker
Yeah, well, I think that goes right into our belief systems, right?
00:14:31
Speaker
How do we carry ourselves through this system that we're part of?
00:14:36
Speaker
Because here we are, this is how we live.
00:14:39
Speaker
There is capitalism in our experience of this life.
00:14:42
Speaker
And so how do we navigate it?
00:14:44
Speaker
And then also what I'm hearing from you guys too is coming from a place of healthy skepticism.
00:14:49
Speaker
with our certain teachers or people that we follow or the system itself, right?
00:14:55
Speaker
You know, the four agreements is a really powerful book as well.
00:14:58
Speaker
We're on a book train here and that's the four agreements.
00:15:01
Speaker
And then there's the fifth agreement, which is the healthy skepticism.
00:15:04
Speaker
And so that is coming from our own inner authority around what we're choosing to believe or not, or subscribe to, right?
00:15:11
Speaker
And so we may listen to a book or read a book
00:15:14
Speaker
And this is coming from a person, right?
00:15:17
Speaker
And we have a choice to be able to take in their belief systems or not.
00:15:22
Speaker
And so I think that's really powerful that you were able to take from that rich dad, poor dad book, what really supported you.
00:15:30
Speaker
And then also kind of turn off some of the other values that that person holds, because it's not based on what, what you hold.
00:15:38
Speaker
And so I'd love to actually inquire a little more about some of our own personal breakthroughs in our own money mindset or our own process of becoming more wealth conscious, more in the prosperity flow, currency flow, as you were talking about.
00:15:57
Speaker
I love just the term currency, S-E-A, allowing it to flow through.
00:16:03
Speaker
So yeah, any personal inspirations or sparks that you've had on your journey?
00:16:11
Speaker
I would love to speak to that skepticism for a moment because it really, there's something lit up for me with that, which is, I think, you know, in terms of finances, there's, there's every, most people, you know, want more.
00:16:24
Speaker
And there's a lot of people that prey on that desire for more.
00:16:28
Speaker
And there's a, there's a lot of people who are trying to sell schemes or products or plans.
00:16:33
Speaker
And I know that I,
00:16:35
Speaker
I was raised with a real thick skepticism for anyone that is trying to sell you a plan to make money.
00:16:41
Speaker
You know, why is this person not doing the thing that they are doing?
00:16:47
Speaker
Why spend all their time trying to sell a program for real estate investment instead of doing real estate investment?
00:16:51
Speaker
and there are answers for why people would do that.
00:16:54
Speaker
But there's also a lot of people that are preying off that desire to make money.
00:17:01
Speaker
So I think skepticism is a huge, has to be in there.
00:17:03
Speaker
Now, the flip side to that is that I was raised with so much skepticism around
00:17:09
Speaker
people trying to sell you ways to make money that I have been very resistant to pay for trainings over the years, many of which I think could have been very helpful to me.
00:17:20
Speaker
I think I could have invested in myself a lot more, but because I was so afraid of people taking advantage of me,
00:17:29
Speaker
that I was unwilling to take risks.
00:17:32
Speaker
So it's somewhere in that area of like, what is healthy risk?
00:17:35
Speaker
What is investing in yourself?
00:17:37
Speaker
And what is healthy skepticism as far as you just trust everybody that says, pay me money and I'll help you.
00:17:43
Speaker
Some of them will, and some of them are out there to try to prey on you.
00:17:49
Speaker
Well, that goes right into, you know, choosing our teachers as well, right?
00:17:54
Speaker
And being able to use our inner authority and discernment on who we want to give our money to, who we want to give our time and attention and, you know, be a student of, right?
00:18:06
Speaker
There's certain teachers out there that you just don't really resonate with.
00:18:09
Speaker
And it's like, okay, I'm not going to
00:18:11
Speaker
I'm not going to put my time into that.
00:18:12
Speaker
But if there's somebody that really holds a similar value system, then it's like, yes.
00:18:16
Speaker
And I feel like that word investing in ourselves is such a powerful practice.
00:18:24
Speaker
And you were talking about Tony Robbins.
00:18:26
Speaker
Tony Robbins is an amazing teacher for learning how to make the biggest investment in ourselves.
00:18:32
Speaker
There's actually another book I'll just kind of plant the seed to.
00:18:35
Speaker
I think it was The Last Safe Investment.
00:18:39
Speaker
is a co-authored brian franklin and i'm not quite sure who the other author was at this moment but you can check it out in the show notes and it's really about alternate investments versus not just money or real estate or gold but really investing in ourselves investing in our community investing in our relationships and so i think that there's some really beautiful sparks and nuggets in that one too yeah and that
00:19:07
Speaker
what you kind of are speaking to is, you know, we are all familiar with that mindset of like, you know, we're choosing based on love or we're choosing based on fear.
00:19:17
Speaker
And that gets applied to so many parts of our lives and definitely gets applied to the realm of money for us.
00:19:23
Speaker
So whether or not we're going to invest in something or we're going to buy this training course, it's like, oh, I don't want to get taken advantage of.
00:19:31
Speaker
You know, it's like automatically a fear-based decision.
00:19:34
Speaker
So it's really important to
00:19:37
Speaker
Like we talked about before in the previous money episode, the first step in this whole process is to find out where our beliefs reside and just kind of examine our past and have we made money decisions based on love or based on fear, likely a combination of both.
00:19:55
Speaker
So it's been important for me to...
00:19:59
Speaker
switch that and have it be determined like, okay, so am I making this decision based
Financial Literacy and Gratitude in Scarcity
00:20:05
Speaker
on am I grasping at something because I'm fearful of scarcity or something?
00:20:10
Speaker
Or am I doing it based on love and being able to acquire more resources so I can live the sort of life I want to live?
00:20:19
Speaker
also provide like you know i've got like a family you know that is that is growing now so i've got some you know some different decisions to make uh that i've had in the past so but making sure that those decisions are coming from love it sounds kind of it sounds definitely sounds woo woo but i found in my own experience like those love-based decisions more often than not and sometimes literally pay off
00:20:44
Speaker
So I find myself, I rarely have ever have regretted a decision that I made based on love, even when it comes to the realm of money in our lives.
00:20:54
Speaker
So that's been a potent catalyst for me.
00:21:01
Speaker
Making decisions based on love.
00:21:07
Speaker
I would say, you know, I, I so love that direction.
00:21:11
Speaker
And I also, my skepticism kicks in and like, I feel like if I look at my,
00:21:16
Speaker
Facebook ads there it's filled with people trying to sell me programs to bring my gifts to the world and to learn how to sell my, you know, to, and I, it's, I know enough about sales funnels and marketing to know that they are trying to use the things that are, that resonate with me, such as love, such as being of service.
00:21:42
Speaker
And they're trying to sell to me in that way.
00:21:46
Speaker
That isn't to say that the programs aren't good.
00:21:49
Speaker
I just, I feel like I know of way more programs that are trying to convince me how to make money as a coach than are trying to teach me how to be a good coach.
00:21:58
Speaker
And those are the kinds of things that make me scared and kick in my fear.
00:22:02
Speaker
I know fear is not good, but that is, and I'll admit that I would like to be more trusting in these worlds, but I also, yeah, I'm going to say yes, love and skepticism.
00:22:16
Speaker
I love, I love that so much.
00:22:17
Speaker
Cause I have a similar feeling and I think you and I have talked about this before, um, just around finding ways to be able to share our gifts with the world in a way that is supportive to the lifestyle that we want to live without trying to take something or be in that scarcity mindset.
00:22:34
Speaker
You know, one of the things that's been really, um,
00:22:38
Speaker
a lot of skepticism and my end here too is like being an entrepreneur and wanting to serve and be a guide, a coach, a healer out in the world, um, from that place of abundance, not from a place of scarcity.
00:22:53
Speaker
Cause I do see a lot of programs out there that are just trying to make money.
00:22:57
Speaker
And I, I also see the shadow of that, of some of like some people I actually know that have to sell a certain amount of
00:23:05
Speaker
themselves in order to survive and thrive, you know?
00:23:08
Speaker
And so it's coming from that, like, Ooh, I have to fill my program.
00:23:12
Speaker
Otherwise I'm going to be like eating ramen noodles.
00:23:15
Speaker
And it's coming from that place of scarcity and not from overflow.
00:23:18
Speaker
And so there is a shadow side of that.
00:23:21
Speaker
And so I think that it comes right back around to, you know, the discernment on how we're choosing to share our gifts with the world.
00:23:29
Speaker
I know personally, I think I shared this in the last money mindset conversation just around
00:23:34
Speaker
knowing when that sort of creeps in, right?
00:23:39
Speaker
And Janice, you talked about that too, like tracking where the old scarcity programs might come in at different moments and being able to catch it and redirect the action, redirect the thoughts, redirect the intentions.
00:23:54
Speaker
For me personally, there's a couple of moments where I get to play around with that and I get to look at where those patterns come from.
00:24:04
Speaker
I think it's really fascinating to kind of go back on the lineage, look at what was taught to me from my parents, what was taught to them by their parents.
00:24:12
Speaker
So for example, if I am going shopping for food and I come to the register and I'm like clenching,
00:24:22
Speaker
And I'm like, oh my God, this food is so expensive.
00:24:26
Speaker
I, you know, I can notice that in one of my current practices and has been for some time that has liberated me so much and has helped me feel so much better.
00:24:36
Speaker
more flow and the currency is to be able to watch when that starts to come up.
00:24:44
Speaker
And then instead choosing to think to myself, I'm so grateful that I have the money to buy this food right now.
00:24:50
Speaker
I'm so grateful that I have access to this organic, delicious food.
00:24:56
Speaker
I'm so grateful that I have people to share this food with, right?
00:24:59
Speaker
Instead of getting into that kind of clenched space of like, I don't know if I should be doing this and
00:25:05
Speaker
It's been an amazing practice to shift and I just feel so much better when I do that.
00:25:11
Speaker
And then watch more money come in.
00:25:15
Speaker
Yeah, it's interesting looking back on my life and the tools that I have used to do that, to get myself to that place.
00:25:24
Speaker
They sounded even in the moment they sounded a little like, OK, that's you know, I had nothing to lose.
00:25:31
Speaker
There's a good amount of my my younger 20s where I think I mentioned before in the previous episode, I've kind of found myself like abundant and then less than abundant and kind of back and forth, back and forth and got to a point.
00:25:44
Speaker
in early adulthood where I was like, all right, I need to, how do I break this cycle?
00:25:48
Speaker
And so I was trying to read all these tools and such.
00:25:51
Speaker
And one tool that helped a lot in this, you're, you're talking about grocery, your, your grocery runs kind of sparked me on this because this is how I did it.
00:26:00
Speaker
It's, you know, ultimately if you find yourself in a place of abundance where you can actually have a hundred dollars and not need to spend it, or does it need to go someplace right away?
00:26:11
Speaker
Take it and put it, I took it and put it in my wallet, based on this advice that I saw.
00:26:15
Speaker
So my wallet always had a hundred dollar bill tucked away in it.
00:26:18
Speaker
And then I would be grocery shopping and be like, oh, the price of that.
00:26:22
Speaker
And then that's like, then reminder, it's like, oh wait, I actually could afford this.
00:26:25
Speaker
I have the money in my wallet that I can afford this.
00:26:30
Speaker
And I would kind of have that moment like at the mall or something.
00:26:34
Speaker
It took a little while, not that long, but it took a little while where I just like that mindset or that thought, I can afford this.
00:26:42
Speaker
I can afford this.
00:26:43
Speaker
I actually can afford this.
00:26:45
Speaker
Just having cycling through that long enough, I found myself in a place where I didn't have to have the $100 bill in my wallet to believe and to know for it to be true that I can afford this.
00:26:58
Speaker
That belief literally changed things.
00:27:02
Speaker
Sure, it could be coincidental.
00:27:03
Speaker
Circumstances just changed in my life.
00:27:05
Speaker
I am a firm believer in the power of thought and the power of belief.
00:27:09
Speaker
And that I would just be like going through the store.
00:27:14
Speaker
I can afford this.
00:27:14
Speaker
I can afford this.
00:27:15
Speaker
And that coincided with going to the grocery store.
00:27:18
Speaker
Do not look at the price of the thing.
00:27:21
Speaker
Just get the thing that you want.
00:27:23
Speaker
And there was a couple of times where I overestimated and then be like, oh God, all right, can I take that off?
00:27:29
Speaker
Take that off at the check.
00:27:30
Speaker
Then your checkers, they go through this every day.
00:27:32
Speaker
So it's not a big deal for them.
00:27:33
Speaker
But that was a long time ago.
00:27:35
Speaker
And I just, I don't look at the price of groceries anymore.
00:27:38
Speaker
I just get what I want.
00:27:39
Speaker
I am grateful every day that I get to be able to do that in the grocery store.
00:27:43
Speaker
I definitely practice gratitude for that.
00:27:45
Speaker
And that I think also helps to keep the, the more gratitude we have, the more things we have to be grateful for.
00:27:51
Speaker
It's like all these like hippie sayings,
00:27:53
Speaker
You know, sayings that are not true fall by the wayside.
00:27:58
Speaker
There's millions of sayings that we don't hear about anymore.
00:28:01
Speaker
But the ones that we keep hearing about, we keep hearing about for a reason.
00:28:08
Speaker
And I'll have to add on to that.
00:28:10
Speaker
There's a balance.
00:28:11
Speaker
You know, like you said, I don't really pay attention to what the cost is of my food as much as I did before, right?
00:28:19
Speaker
I have that experience where I used to kind of like look at the price first and then buy the thing, you know, or at a restaurant.
00:28:26
Speaker
Like instead of looking at what I want to order, I'm looking at the price of what the price of the food is, and then I'm going to decide based on that.
Valuing Time and Balancing Time-Money Trade-offs
00:28:34
Speaker
And like finding the shift within myself to choose based on what I want, knowing that I have a balance, you know, of course, like choose what I want first and then see if it feels in alignment to what I want to spend.
00:28:46
Speaker
And then same thing with the groceries.
00:28:48
Speaker
I, I played with both or was like, I'm just going to get what I want and not really pay attention.
00:28:53
Speaker
But then that kind of bit me in the ass because then there's certain places that they don't, you know, like I'll give you an example.
00:29:01
Speaker
There was a, um, grocery store I went to that was really expensive and there was like a sweet potato that I had picked up and they had rung me up for like a $12 sweet potato.
00:29:12
Speaker
And I was like, wow, why is my bill so high?
00:29:15
Speaker
I didn't get that much.
00:29:15
Speaker
And I looked at the receipt and I was like $12 for a sweet potato.
00:29:20
Speaker
That must be a really good sweet potato.
00:29:22
Speaker
And since then I decided I ended up returning it.
00:29:25
Speaker
I didn't really want to pay that for that.
00:29:27
Speaker
You know, and then since then I started to pay more attention to where my money was going and starting to look at my receipt when I, I'm very grateful to be able to buy these things.
00:29:40
Speaker
coming back to that like just paying attention i look at my receipt to make sure that i don't get overcharged because sometimes there's human errors too things get swiped multiple times and there's been so many moments uh when i check there is something that i do get overcharged for so one of the things that i've been cultivating in my own money practice is paying attention
00:30:02
Speaker
to the way that money moves through me, how it's coming into my life, where it's actually going to, how it's funneling, how I'm spending it, how I'm saving it, where I'm investing it.
00:30:13
Speaker
And this will kind of be a segue into why I'm so excited about bringing on a guest into our next money conversation is learning about financial practices.
00:30:23
Speaker
Financial literacy has really given me an opportunity to feel a lot more freedom in my life.
00:30:30
Speaker
And that's, and that's a good addendum.
00:30:33
Speaker
I definitely want to say that, that this is not, you know, to be talking about like having a laissez faire about your money, like budgets are important.
00:30:41
Speaker
And so, and, and being aware of the flow of money, how it's flowing in and out of your life is, uh, is key for all this for sure.
00:30:49
Speaker
I, I really resonate with what you guys are talking about.
00:30:51
Speaker
And I, it is a very new experience for me to, to choose something at the grocery store, not based on what is on sale.
00:30:59
Speaker
You know, like there I've started noticing myself just in the last couple of years, like I just saved a dollar and I'm buying something that I don't want or I'm buying something that is a compromise.
00:31:10
Speaker
So for every bite of this cereal, it is going to be a less enjoyable experience.
00:31:16
Speaker
what is that dollar worth?
00:31:18
Speaker
And so in trying to change my money kind of attitude of trying to save as much as possible, the game being save, save, save, save to wait.
00:31:25
Speaker
Now the purpose of all of this energy is to maximize my joy, maximize my freedom, maximize my appreciation of these things so that somewhere in there is this equation of like, okay, actually spending three extra dollars on toilet paper that I love, worth it, totally worth it.
00:31:48
Speaker
Another thing on mindsets that you're talking about having that gratitude for being able to purchase the groceries you want.
00:31:55
Speaker
And I think that that can be brought into so many ways that we spend money.
00:32:00
Speaker
When you are paying your bills, when you're paying for your electricity and saying like,
00:32:05
Speaker
I'm so grateful that I'm able to have electricity coming to my home.
00:32:10
Speaker
I'm so grateful I've got water coming to my home.
00:32:12
Speaker
I'm so grateful I can pay taxes, you know, so that I have enough money coming in that I can contribute towards the roads.
00:32:20
Speaker
Now, it can get deeper and frustrating when you realize what else your taxes are going towards.
00:32:24
Speaker
But, you know, just in general, that attitude of like, I'm grateful for this opportunity of I get to pay this bill because I'm a part of the system that's working for me.
00:32:35
Speaker
I got sparks on that one.
00:32:37
Speaker
So one of my biggest money breakthroughs, I've had a lot of but this is probably one of the biggest ones I had in my early days of discovering the power of thought in relationship to money.
00:32:53
Speaker
mid to late twenties and I was kind of navigating the new lifestyle in California where things are more expensive.
00:32:59
Speaker
Um, I was starting off my career, so I was, you know, pretty close to broke.
00:33:04
Speaker
I was getting by, but I was, I was at a very low point and I had just started really practicing affirmations.
00:33:10
Speaker
And, um, I had this affirmation on a sticky note that said, I appreciate all the money that I have now.
00:33:18
Speaker
And I had that there and I was, you know, at a place where like, how am I going to afford my shampoo?
00:33:26
Speaker
I'm running out of things and I have utilities and I was feeling really like scraping the bottom of the barrel.
00:33:32
Speaker
And so I sat down at my altar and I just started to kind of like tune into, you know, what was happening.
00:33:40
Speaker
And I saw that little sticky note and I looked over and I remembered that I had a piggy bank.
00:33:47
Speaker
I had been putting quarters in for like a year.
00:33:50
Speaker
And my idea of putting quarters in was like to save up for a vacation.
00:33:56
Speaker
And I don't know what I was thinking to make a vacation out of quarters, but
00:34:00
Speaker
It was a moment anyways.
00:34:02
Speaker
I took that piggy bank.
00:34:03
Speaker
It was one of those ceramic ones from Mexico.
00:34:06
Speaker
It just has a little hole in the bottom.
00:34:08
Speaker
So in order to actually get money out, you really actually have to break it.
00:34:12
Speaker
And so I was like, well, maybe I'll just take out some quarters to pay my utilities and buy the products I need.
00:34:19
Speaker
And so I'm sitting there shaking it, trying to get out just enough.
00:34:23
Speaker
And I see that little sticky note, like I appreciate the money that I have now.
00:34:27
Speaker
And all of a sudden it breaks and there was this huge pile of quarters in my lap.
00:34:33
Speaker
And I had this overwhelming feeling of, wow, look at all this money.
00:34:39
Speaker
Look at all this money.
00:34:41
Speaker
It's like a mountain of quarters, you know?
00:34:45
Speaker
And I was like, wow, actually I do have a lot of money.
00:34:49
Speaker
I appreciate all the money that I have now, even if it is in quarters.
00:34:53
Speaker
And sure enough, I started to attract clients.
00:34:57
Speaker
I started to attract these opportunities.
00:35:00
Speaker
Next thing you know, I was actually in the overflow and I really do attribute it to that moment.
00:35:07
Speaker
And I started to see, to give thanks for even the small amount of money that is coming in into my life.
00:35:13
Speaker
You know, every time I find a quarter or a penny, even on the ground,
00:35:17
Speaker
taking that moment to be with it like thank you universe i'm open to receive money in unexpected moments i appreciate all the money that i have now that comes to me and flows through me and that's yeah that is a hugely important kind of thing where people you know i've had friends who were servers and they would get tipped let's say less than 10 percent of them so they get five dollars um
00:35:44
Speaker
a tip, which is a small, smaller than they feel like they should have gotten.
00:35:48
Speaker
And they would also bark.
00:35:49
Speaker
Actually, now that I remember this, I was a bartender and somebody that I was working with and they would get super bitter about that.
00:35:55
Speaker
And on the one hand, I get it.
00:35:56
Speaker
On the other hand, it's not nothing.
00:36:00
Speaker
If you were walking down the side, if you're working on the sidewalk inside a $5 bill on the ground, you would pick it up.
00:36:04
Speaker
Like you would, you would put some effort towards that.
00:36:07
Speaker
So having that gratitude for even the smallest amount, you know, in that way, I look at it, money's money.
00:36:16
Speaker
Thank you for this quarter that I've just found on the ground.
00:36:18
Speaker
Thank you for this quarter I found in my cushions.
00:36:20
Speaker
Thank you for this $20 bill that somehow landed under the tire of my car in the parking lot.
00:36:25
Speaker
It's all, you know, it's all, it's all worth, you know, having gratitude and getting thanks for it.
00:36:32
Speaker
And that's, you know, that's about the, you know, the energy that we've, that we put into this whole realm of money and something that has come my way as I've gotten older, a realization that has helped me out a lot is the, the idea that really the most valuable thing that we had, that all of us have is time.
00:36:55
Speaker
and honoring our time and having that applied to the realm of money.
00:37:01
Speaker
Like, okay, so what is worth my time?
00:37:03
Speaker
Is it worth 10 minutes, me driving 10 minutes across town to get the better price on gas because it's 15 cents cheaper per gallon?
00:37:12
Speaker
It's like, how much of my time is it going to take to save, what, $2 to do that?
00:37:17
Speaker
So making these quick...
00:37:21
Speaker
time cost benefit ratios when it comes to money has helped me immensely because that really is the most valuable thing.
00:37:29
Speaker
When we're younger, you kind of just feel like you're going to just be around forever.
00:37:33
Speaker
But getting to the point I'm at in my life right now, it's like I am likely in the second half of my life.
00:37:41
Speaker
If not, I'm really close to it.
00:37:44
Speaker
That whole time, that perspective kind of be like, okay, what am I choosing to do with my time right now?
00:37:50
Speaker
And this comes to making money, being like, okay, is this what I want to do to earn money?
00:37:56
Speaker
And it's like, no, I'm running out of time.
00:37:59
Speaker
I got to find a way to...
00:38:02
Speaker
you know, create a life for myself where the money is kind of coming and it's going to free up my time.
00:38:09
Speaker
So that, that definitely, that realization helped me.
00:38:12
Speaker
I wish to goodness I had had that realization sooner that like time is this finite resource that we all have and it is tick, tick, ticking away.
00:38:19
Speaker
So that getting that download helped me a lot in the realm of money.
00:38:28
Speaker
I think that that's a, like,
00:38:30
Speaker
I very early, I witnessed my dad offer something on this pre-Craigslist, but he like listed something in the paper and basically said, come pick us up.
00:38:40
Speaker
And I was like, dad, why don't you offer it for sale?
00:38:43
Speaker
Like we could, that's worth 80 bucks or something like that.
00:38:46
Speaker
And he's like, I'm an attorney and I charge this much an hour.
00:38:50
Speaker
If I have to sit through three people coming to look at this thing, it just costs me way too much money to deal with this.
00:38:58
Speaker
And I was like, oh, like, oh, okay.
The Power of Giving and Abundance Mentality
00:39:03
Speaker
Like it's so there are a lot of times when it's not worth it to make the money when it's, and it is worth it to overspend because you save yourself time.
00:39:14
Speaker
It's a massive paradigm shift for me that I think we would, all of us could benefit from at least giving it some consideration.
00:39:22
Speaker
I remember the first time actually just,
00:39:27
Speaker
My friend just yesterday mentioned that he has to go across the border a few times a month.
00:39:33
Speaker
And there is a $65 pass that gets you through the line in 20 minutes versus three hours.
00:39:40
Speaker
And he was sharing this exact sentiment with me is that he knows that he is able to value his time enough to be able to see that that's worth it because that extra two hours, he can actually be putting forth into the
00:39:54
Speaker
serving in his genius and also contributing and also making money.
00:40:01
Speaker
And I, and I want to give, I want to give, um, you know, prop proper due to the concept, like, you know, I have more time than I have money.
00:40:09
Speaker
So I need to, you know, stand in line for three hours because I don't, I really can't afford a $65 to spend on that.
00:40:16
Speaker
That is a real thing for sure.
00:40:20
Speaker
And it's important to, like I said, have that process and make that part of your self-examination.
00:40:29
Speaker
And what's your time worth?
00:40:31
Speaker
I think it's important to put a dollar amount on our time and then live our lives accordingly.
00:40:40
Speaker
So, on that note...
00:40:43
Speaker
you know, our time is valuable.
00:40:44
Speaker
So let's, let's, let's get let's get let's get back.
00:40:47
Speaker
Let's get back out in the world.
00:40:49
Speaker
Betsy, do you have any closing sparks for us to send us off with?
00:40:58
Speaker
I feel like for me, the closing sparks is around mindset and being able to notice when there is a contract, a contraction within the body.
00:41:08
Speaker
And when it comes to feeling, uh, that sense of scarcity and using that as a signpost to redirect and to shift and to adjust.
00:41:17
Speaker
So for me personally, being able to listen to those, uh,
00:41:21
Speaker
those little clenching moments of like, like Halcyon was talking about, like trying to hold onto money and watching when I can let go and soften and shift my awareness and start to open up to an abundance mindset, a prosperity mindset.
00:41:38
Speaker
And for me, of course, as many of you know, I am an affirmation enthusiast.
00:41:43
Speaker
So using affirmations to be able to direct my focus and to watch how the world reflects back to me, that prosperity
00:41:57
Speaker
I guess my closing spark is related to that constriction.
00:42:01
Speaker
And one of the best tools that I have found is to hold on to an idea of tithing or of, you know, in some faiths and some beliefs is, you know, give 10% of your earnings to charity or your church or your
00:42:14
Speaker
community or to others.
00:42:17
Speaker
And I find that it can be really difficult to give when you are feeling scarcity and you want to hold on to everything you got.
00:42:26
Speaker
But if you can change your headspace to be like,
00:42:30
Speaker
part of my budget is giving no matter what.
00:42:34
Speaker
You can start to let go of that clenched fist mentality.
00:42:38
Speaker
And so like I give something to every Kickstarter, every fundraiser I see.
00:42:43
Speaker
I mean, it might be five bucks, you know, it might be more, it might be less, but just,
00:42:48
Speaker
energetically i want to have my hand open so that i am contributing because there's a there's an energetic to the people receiving you're establishing that i live in a world where the money is flowing the money is flowing the money is flowing and i think that you cannot receive it until you act in the world in that way and that has been my experience
00:43:12
Speaker
I got to just like interrupt with a affirmation on that one.
00:43:15
Speaker
The more I give, the more I have to give.
00:43:19
Speaker
That's what you're talking about.
00:43:20
Speaker
The more you give, the more there is to give.
00:43:23
Speaker
The more I give, the more I have to give.
00:43:27
Speaker
I'm going to send you some friends, Kickstarters there, Halcyon.
00:43:31
Speaker
I've already given to Joy of Souls.
00:43:34
Speaker
How about you, Yannick?
00:43:36
Speaker
Let's hook her up.
00:43:37
Speaker
Yeah, the idea of keeping that energy flowing and giving.
00:43:40
Speaker
There's a lot to be said for showing up in the world, choosing how we want to show up in the world.
00:44:01
Speaker
you know, a sort, a source of, um, of positive energy for people.
00:44:05
Speaker
And that, yeah, that involves giving your money to like good causes or giving you, giving your energy and time, like I said, time is valuable, but can, you know, contributing to, to making this world a better place.
00:44:16
Speaker
And that's ultimately what we're, I think that's ultimately what we're trying to do with the whole concept of money.
00:44:22
Speaker
Like I want to have enough to have my own needs met so that I can then, you know,
00:44:27
Speaker
give to the world, give to my friends, give to my community.
00:44:29
Speaker
It's like, you know, well, otherwise, you know, why, why else are, why else are we here?
00:44:34
Speaker
So, um, I think, yeah, just, you know, just kind of combining the two, the two closing sparks of what you guys had shared.
00:44:43
Speaker
And for me, realizing that given that, that, that giving mindset,
00:44:49
Speaker
We can do that no matter what our level of finances and income and no matter what our balance looks like, our bottom line looks like.
00:45:00
Speaker
That can be finances, resources, or whatever.
00:45:04
Speaker
That being of service, that giving to the world,
00:45:08
Speaker
is rewarded in a lot of different ways.
00:45:10
Speaker
And it's often not a one-to-one like a direct, so I'm going to do this thing for this person and they're going to do something for me.
00:45:15
Speaker
It's like, no, it comes from all different directions and nature abhors a vacuum.
00:45:20
Speaker
Like if you leave it, clear all the stuff off of your table in a house and there's something that's going to be on that table very quickly.
00:45:27
Speaker
Create that space in your life for, you know, that, that lets, like that, like,
00:45:31
Speaker
Let go of that grasping mentality.
00:45:34
Speaker
Be that empty table and allow the universe to just like, okay, you're supported.
00:45:40
Speaker
You're interested in supporting others.
00:45:41
Speaker
You are supported as well.
00:45:43
Speaker
So that's my closing spark for today.
00:45:55
Speaker
Reverend Red Moon is now off the top.
00:46:00
Speaker
Well, so grateful to get to be in this conversation, this ongoing conversation with you guys.
00:46:04

00:46:56

00:47:13
Speaker
As mentioned, I've got a nutritional supplement company called New World Nutritionals, spelled N-U-World Nutritionals.com.
00:47:21
Speaker
And our main product is a microdose product that is designed to help elevate and support a higher state of mind, a healthier state of mind.
00:47:30
Speaker
So definitely has been shown to improve and alleviate symptoms of things like ADHD,
00:47:38
Speaker
even PTSD, anxiety, depression, helps with forms of dementia, MS, Parkinson's, all things neurological.
00:47:46
Speaker
And ultimately, most people are using it to just kind of improve their outlook, improve their state of mind.
00:47:51
Speaker
It started as me wanting to do that for myself, my friends seeing the benefits of me,
00:47:56
Speaker
So I started shaving, saving it to or sharing it with my friends and then started sharing it with their friends and so on and so on.
00:48:03
Speaker
And so, yeah, it's really getting some good, doing some good work, getting some great feedback from all sorts of populations across the country, across the world, really.
