Hosts Introduction and Show's Purpose

00:00:22
Speaker
Hello and welcome to Stay Sparked.
00:00:25
Speaker
I'm Betsy Finkelhoo, the creator of the Power Affirmation Project and Somatic Body Worker.
00:00:31
Speaker
I am John Halsey.
00:00:31
Speaker
I'm the host of the Hug Nation YouTube channel.
00:00:34
Speaker
And today we are so excited to invite our dear friend Tovin Sitara on today's episode.
00:00:41
Speaker
And we always love sparking you out there with inspiration.
00:00:46
Speaker
That is our core intention to just have authentic conversations with each other and invite our amazing friends to share in conversations that
00:00:56
Speaker
aim to light you up.

Moments of Gratitude

00:00:58
Speaker
And always we love starting with gratitude.
00:01:01
Speaker
So I will start with my gratitude.
00:01:04
Speaker
Today I am giving thanks for travel preparations.
00:01:09
Speaker
I'm preparing to go to Ireland and I'm getting to deep dive in the prep around international travel.
00:01:15
Speaker
And I'm so grateful for this opportunity.
00:01:19
Speaker
Amazing.
00:01:20
Speaker
Wow.
00:01:20
Speaker
Well, I'm grateful for a recent travel.
00:01:23
Speaker
I just got back from Oregon where I got to jump into a crisp, crisp creek, which was just so energizing and delightful.
00:01:31
Speaker
Awesome.
00:01:32
Speaker
Tovin, how about you?
00:01:33
Speaker
What are you grateful for this morning?
00:01:35
Speaker
I'm grateful for human connection.
00:01:38
Speaker
Yesterday, Nikki and I went to a yoga event down by a casino nearby.
00:01:47
Speaker
And it was just a random thing we wanted to do.
00:01:49
Speaker
We got invited by friends and we ended up meeting such cool new people.

Tobin's Background in Music and Lucid's Origins

00:01:55
Speaker
And just a reminder that like that new human connection is just amazing.
00:02:01
Speaker
very fulfilling and just grateful for that.
00:02:05
Speaker
And here we are getting to connect through technology too.
00:02:10
Speaker
How awesome.
00:02:11
Speaker
So I'm in Asheville, you're in Vegas and healthy and you're in San Diego.
00:02:15
Speaker
Yeah.
00:02:17
Speaker
Awesome that we can get to stay connected and get to share these conversations across the country.
00:02:24
Speaker
Yeah.
00:02:25
Speaker
And your gratitude just really highlights the reason we want to have a conversation with you, Tobin, is that we know each other, but the things that I know about you are all like tip of the iceberg awesomeness, whether it's your creativity and your art, your entrepreneurship.
00:02:42
Speaker
And what do you do when you have some free time?
00:02:44
Speaker
You go to a yoga event and meet new people?
00:02:46
Speaker
Of course.
00:02:47
Speaker
Of course you should be here.
00:02:48
Speaker
I'm so glad we're having this conversation.
00:02:50
Speaker
And I have a feeling you were probably sparking some people with your magic and your light, as well as your partner, Nikki, as you do.
00:02:57
Speaker
You know, we've known each other for, gosh, at least over a decade, I would guess, through just, you know, Burning Man culture and our San Diego and Vegas communities and just a lot of wonderful gatherings that we've done.
00:03:12
Speaker
It's been really awesome to watch you on your personal journey as a music producer and DJ, sharing your

Impact of Burning Man on Personal Lives

00:03:20
Speaker
music.
00:03:20
Speaker
I've danced to so many of your sets and have gotten down so hardcore to Kaz Tech, which is, for those of you that don't know, Kaz Tech is his music name, so look that up.
00:03:31
Speaker
And it's been so cool to watch you build businesses and create the CBD brand, the Vita Optima, and then most recently, the Lucid brand,
00:03:42
Speaker
drink that you have been making for the last many years.
00:03:44
Speaker
And it's for me personally, it's something I drink almost every day now.
00:03:49
Speaker
And I remember a couple of years ago, we were at our friend's 40th birthday party and you were mixing up a yummy concoction.
00:03:58
Speaker
And I picked your brain about it.
00:04:00
Speaker
And you were telling me all about mushrooms and nootropics and we're lit up and I felt the magic.
00:04:06
Speaker
And it's just been so cool to watch you just pour your love into
00:04:09
Speaker
into creating this product for the world that's now reaching far and wide.
00:04:13
Speaker
So I think that's going to be a big part of our conversation and our curiosities today.
00:04:21
Speaker
But before we ask you some questions, Halcyon, do you have any other hopes and intentions of things that you want to hear from Tobin today?
00:04:30
Speaker
Uh, well, I, before we started recording, we all mentioned that we're not going to Burning Man.
00:04:35
Speaker
So, you know, I think that we may have to touch on what is it like to be grownups who are so touched by Burning Man, but I now have the dust in us, but how does that affect, you know, what we, what we do in the world currently?
00:04:47
Speaker
Yeah.
00:04:49
Speaker
Long time burners.
00:04:50
Speaker
I mean, well, I mean, I'm, I'm probably, let's see, I would say
00:04:58
Speaker
10 years.
00:05:00
Speaker
So would you consider that like intermediate?

From Observers to Participants at Burning Man

00:05:03
Speaker
I think that's long-term.
00:05:04
Speaker
I think that's long-term.
00:05:05
Speaker
Especially compared to you though.
00:05:07
Speaker
Oh, compared to me, everyone is an infant.
00:05:09
Speaker
We got like the grandmaster sensei.
00:05:13
Speaker
Yeah.
00:05:13
Speaker
What?
00:05:13
Speaker
32 years or something?
00:05:14
Speaker
26, 26.
00:05:14
Speaker
Hey, whoa, whoa, whoa.
00:05:17
Speaker
See, I'm halfway.
00:05:18
Speaker
Wow.
00:05:20
Speaker
I thought I was doing pretty good with eight years under my belt.
00:05:22
Speaker
Yeah.
00:05:23
Speaker
But one of the things that has come up, you know, and like when I've been trying to explain to people like, oh, I've been going for 26 years.
00:05:28
Speaker
That's why you should listen to my advice or my tips.
00:05:31
Speaker
I'm like, there's going to the burn.
00:05:35
Speaker
There's a huge depth of what that can mean.
00:05:37
Speaker
You know, you're going to the burn, though, and included massive performing schedules, you know, like like deep gifting experiences that is way, I think,
00:05:48
Speaker
It's a whole different level of organization and commitment and gifting than just going to Burning Man.
00:05:54
Speaker
So we can't judge it by just the numbers of our years.
00:05:56
Speaker
It's by the content of our gifting character.
00:05:59
Speaker
Well, yeah, I think you turn from the observer to the participator over time.
00:06:07
Speaker
Because, of course, my first year, which was 2009,
00:06:13
Speaker
I didn't really gift too much.
00:06:16
Speaker
I was just learning that and over the course of the decades, you become more involved and more involved and more involved.
00:06:25
Speaker
And I think that's just like an innate thing for us that are just so inspired by this event that we're like, we want to, it's done so much for me.
00:06:34
Speaker
How can I be part of it and give back?
00:06:37
Speaker
When was your first year?
00:06:38
Speaker
Like, were you guys' first years?
00:06:40
Speaker
Mine was 2007.
00:06:40
Speaker
Yeah.
00:06:41
Speaker
And I had a similar experience too, where when I first got there, it was just like watching and diving into this playground that I took a little while to comprehend

Inspiration Behind Lucid

00:06:54
Speaker
the magnitude and the magic and the power of what I was experiencing.
00:06:57
Speaker
And then after my first year, I started to really see how to participate, how to give, how to contribute to this co-creative playground.
00:07:09
Speaker
Yeah.
00:07:10
Speaker
Yeah.
00:07:10
Speaker
My first year was 98 and my within my first day, I was like, really the gifting aspect of it really just hit me like, oh my gosh, everyone here is working to make this better.
00:07:23
Speaker
And I like I want to figure out how I can make it better.
00:07:25
Speaker
And I'm curious.
00:07:27
Speaker
So were you producing music before you went to Burning Man?
00:07:31
Speaker
Yeah.
00:07:32
Speaker
Yeah.
00:07:33
Speaker
OK.
00:07:34
Speaker
Yeah, I was already in that.
00:07:36
Speaker
Wait, was I?
00:07:38
Speaker
No.
00:07:41
Speaker
Well, yes and no.
00:07:43
Speaker
It's, it was, I, I was dabbling.
00:07:47
Speaker
Okay.
00:07:49
Speaker
Thank you for reminding me about this because it was like so long ago.
00:07:52
Speaker
And I, this was like such a pivotal point in my life that.
00:07:57
Speaker
After my first burn, that was when I had that moment to want to actually take that by the handle music and just like go with it and run with it on full speed and take it from dabbling to complete get on the surfboard and ride this wave.
00:08:16
Speaker
Thank you.
00:08:19
Speaker
It's like yes and no, but that was the moment where I wanted to see it through to do it professionally.
00:08:28
Speaker
That's so cool.
00:08:30
Speaker
Who would have thought it would have taken you this far?
00:08:33
Speaker
You've played for thousands of people.
00:08:35
Speaker
Some of the stages you've played on, there's thousands of people on your dance floors.
00:08:40
Speaker
It's just such an exhilarating, powerful experience and how beautiful.
00:08:45
Speaker
That was 15 years ago now.
00:08:49
Speaker
Yeah.
00:08:49
Speaker
Yeah.
00:08:50
Speaker
Amazing.
00:08:51
Speaker
Not as long as John's first burn, which is in the 1900s, technically.
00:08:55
Speaker
Wow, that sounds so old.
00:08:59
Speaker
Seriously.
00:09:00
Speaker
1900s.
00:09:01
Speaker
But I love that.
00:09:04
Speaker
I mean, that was so long ago for me that I can almost not remember what my mentality and my relationship to the world and my creativity was.
00:09:14
Speaker
And so I think that it's really interesting that all of us
00:09:17
Speaker
in this conversation, we don't have plans to go to Burning Man this year, but it sounds like
00:09:21
Speaker
a huge part of that deep down fire to participate, to gift, to create, find our gifts and give them to the world.
00:09:28
Speaker
Really, I mean, that fire got really burning hot at Burning Man.
00:09:32
Speaker
Yeah, absolutely.
00:09:34
Speaker
And you know what?
00:09:34
Speaker
I actually have a spark because of what we're talking about today.

Lucid's Creation and Lifestyle Integration

00:09:39
Speaker
And I'm looking at your shirt, Tovin.
00:09:41
Speaker
It says Lucid.
00:09:42
Speaker
And this is the brand that you started, Lucid.
00:09:44
Speaker
And my experience of being on the playa at Burning Man is like a dream.
00:09:51
Speaker
a waking dream.
00:09:53
Speaker
It helped me to start to see the magic of living lucid, to be able to manifest my reality in every single moment.
00:10:02
Speaker
And it really changed everything when I started to see the capacity that I had to live from that place of eyes wide open.
00:10:11
Speaker
And to be able to create from that place.
00:10:14
Speaker
And so I love this name of your brand, Lucid.
00:10:19
Speaker
And I'm so curious to kind of like fast forward to now, how did that name come?
00:10:24
Speaker
And also, I guess for some of the listeners too, if you can just describe a little bit around what Lucid is.
00:10:35
Speaker
It's pretty much what you just described.
00:10:38
Speaker
Yeah.
00:10:40
Speaker
where taking in these nutrients, the functional mushrooms and these nootropics and putting them into your body was the feeling that I got when consuming it.
00:11:01
Speaker
And it is really that eye opening.
00:11:06
Speaker
getting your morning routine and just kind of like waking up for the day and drinking this really make me feel like, wow, I'm actually like, I have like this inner eye that's waking up that I'm like focused on what I want to do for the day, how I want to be productive.
00:11:27
Speaker
And that's kind of where that came from, really.
00:11:31
Speaker
Can you take a couple of steps back to when you started experimenting or exploring or trying out different different stuff in your into your diet?
00:11:43
Speaker
I've always been into.
00:11:47
Speaker
You know, supplements, vitamins and just living healthy, you know, a healthy lifestyle.
00:11:55
Speaker
But it wasn't.
00:11:58
Speaker
It wasn't till 2015, so that's, you know, almost 10 years ago, where Nikki, my wife and I decided to go full in on keto for the summer.
00:12:13
Speaker
which is actually we wanted to look good for the burn yes can you just give a little insight like keto meaning it's a diet keto yeah the ketogenic diet right and which is very very calorie restricted and carb restricted and we used to eat you know eat breakfast every day eggs and the full you know just the full thing and um noticed that
00:12:44
Speaker
we would get like almost a hit a wall like mid day.
00:12:51
Speaker
And so we started drinking smoothies and in the smoothies, I discovered functional mushrooms and I discovered nootropics and it's over the course of like years, right?
00:13:03
Speaker
Functional mushrooms were the first thing.
00:13:04
Speaker
And I'm like, okay, well,
00:13:06
Speaker
what can I put in these smoothies that can act as like a meal replacement?
00:13:09
Speaker
And it was, you know, MCT oil, protein powder, maca powder, and then functional mushrooms.
00:13:16
Speaker
And it was a constant evolution of going through different mushrooms, different nootropics, and being a little scientist throughout our ketogenic diet.
00:13:28
Speaker
And our daily smoothies, which we still drink to this day, I literally have it in my hand right here.
00:13:35
Speaker
And still doesn't get old.
00:13:37
Speaker
We don't eat breakfast anymore.
00:13:40
Speaker
It really made an impact on our diet because it helped us eat less in terms of staying within the ketogenic diet.
00:13:50
Speaker
But within that, the nutritional...
00:13:56
Speaker
value that these functional mushrooms and nootropics also brought into the diet really helped me maintain the energy I needed to get through the day.
00:14:06
Speaker
So it was like almost a moment of clarity for me.
00:14:08
Speaker
I'm like, okay, well, not only do I not need as much food, I can actually get my energy and the things my body needs from functional mushrooms, from nootropics to be able to operate through the day.
00:14:24
Speaker
That's sort of how it started.
00:14:25
Speaker
And, you know, we've been drinking these over the course of, you know, five years, six years, seven years.
00:14:31
Speaker
And then, you know, in 2019, 2020, that's when I felt called to drink.
00:14:40
Speaker
create something out of it like take the take everything that i've learned from all of this and make the ultimate team the avengers of every of all of the things that i've tried because obviously you can't put it all in one right so you gotta carefully select the best and um from what i've learned that's what i chose that to that to be part of lucid uh so that's sort of the uh the evolution of it yeah
00:15:07
Speaker
Amazing.
00:15:08
Speaker
So basically, you're saying you started because you wanted to look good, and then you realized you wanted to feel good.
00:15:13
Speaker
And now you get to feel good and look good.
00:15:16
Speaker
So for those of you who are watching on YouTube, you know, but if you're just listening, like Tovin is glowing, your skin is just radiant, you are healthy, you're vibrant, you're strong, you've always known, I've known you to be someone who's
00:15:30
Speaker
who's very fit and healthy and strong.
00:15:32
Speaker
And so how amazing that you started to explore how these mushrooms and nootropics and ingredients could actually contribute to you rocking your Burning Man body and beyond.
00:15:45
Speaker
And then also to be able to think clearly, to live from a place of lucidity every day.
00:15:52
Speaker
It's pretty amazing.
00:15:53
Speaker
Yeah.
00:15:53
Speaker
And I am a very, very strong believer in the power of mushrooms, the power of nootropics.
00:16:00
Speaker
I mean, I literally have been taking them every day for the last decade, over the last decade.
00:16:06
Speaker
So at what point do you...

Development and Demand for Lucid

00:16:12
Speaker
decide this is the formula I'm going to package this I'm going to turn this into not just something that I make for myself and my close friends but I'm going to make this available to the public yeah I would say that I
00:16:34
Speaker
I know the impact that Functional Mushrooms has made on me, and that was when they were very new in 2015.
00:16:42
Speaker
I mean, like, there was one company that made a mushroom coffee, and that was Four Sigmatic.
00:16:48
Speaker
I'm sure you guys are familiar with it.
00:16:51
Speaker
And I watched the market grow and the popularity of it grow.
00:16:57
Speaker
And I watched a lot of large companies enter the market.
00:17:03
Speaker
And at the same time, a lot of my friends were asking me for advice on, what do you drink every morning?
00:17:12
Speaker
What do you put in your smoothies?
00:17:15
Speaker
And I would, you know, give advice to all my friends.
00:17:18
Speaker
Hey, you should take this.
00:17:19
Speaker
You should take this.
00:17:20
Speaker
And more and more friends are constantly texting me.
00:17:24
Speaker
Hey, what about this?
00:17:25
Speaker
And, you know, what do you think about this mushroom?
00:17:26
Speaker
And I'm like, okay, I think that this is probably a good time for me to now just make a product.
00:17:32
Speaker
So you guys can stop bugging me about all this and my advice.
00:17:35
Speaker
And I'm just going to make something for you to buy.
00:17:37
Speaker
How about that?
00:17:38
Speaker
Yeah.
00:17:39
Speaker
that's wise right there that's that's real wisdom no yeah and i i think that there there's just that there's something there where i it's genuinely some that something that had works had worked for me so i have no problem giving this to my friends because i'm like this is this is what made an impact on me i'm not trying to sell you on this
00:18:03
Speaker
you don't have to drink it if you don't want, but this is what it's done for me.
00:18:08
Speaker
And, you know, it's purely, it's a genuine, it's a genuine feeling that I have, that I'm just sharing what has, you know, just made such a difference in my health that I'm happy to.
00:18:27
Speaker
And I just, I felt compelled to create a product and share.
00:18:33
Speaker
so it's such a cool like an interesting i think frontier and evolution of you know burning man principles you know because when you're first gifting you're like giving away little trinkets and things and then you start to realize that gifting is figuring out like what skills or knowledge or talents or do you have that can fill in the cracks in the world and make the world better and i think that as burning man has become something more than just a week in the desert there's been this really interesting
00:19:01
Speaker
figuring things out of like, well, it can't be anti commerce, Larry Harvey was very clear that, you know, decommodification does not mean anti commerce.

Lucid as a Gift and Health Product

00:19:09
Speaker
And so you can be in a gifting mindset, as you are marketing a product, because you know, in your mind that this product is something that is a gift to the people that are going to use it.
00:19:22
Speaker
And I love that that is kind of the path that you took.
00:19:25
Speaker
I think it's this thing, a lot of burners struggle with it.
00:19:27
Speaker
So I love hearing that you figured it out.
00:19:29
Speaker
And it does, I mean, you hit it, you really like hit it that I feel like it is a gift.
00:19:34
Speaker
I feel so good when I gift like it to people or at least open their eyes to it.
00:19:41
Speaker
I'm like, hey, have you ever heard of Functional Mushrooms?
00:19:43
Speaker
No.
00:19:43
Speaker
Well, here, try this.
00:19:44
Speaker
Here's a little sample.
00:19:46
Speaker
And they'll reach back out to me and be like, wow, this is really good.
00:19:50
Speaker
I didn't think that it would taste like this.
00:19:53
Speaker
And that it made me feel really good.
00:19:56
Speaker
And just the feedback loop also is something that's gratifying as well.
00:20:02
Speaker
To know that people, how much of an impact it does make on people as well.
00:20:07
Speaker
I'm like, yes, awesome.
00:20:09
Speaker
Yeah, that's the spark that keeps you going.
00:20:11
Speaker
It is the spark.
00:20:13
Speaker
Yes, it's like the fuel for the fire.
00:20:16
Speaker
When you see whatever it is that you're putting out into the world, making a positive difference and being received, then it's like, okay, keep going.
00:20:24
Speaker
Confirmation.
00:20:25
Speaker
This is working.
00:20:26
Speaker
Okay, I can keep going.
00:20:29
Speaker
I think I can guess where that comes from on the music side, where I play a song that, you know, that comes from me that I've made and I've shared with the hundreds or even thousands or maybe even less than that people.
00:20:45
Speaker
It doesn't matter.
00:20:47
Speaker
But to be able to witness something that has come from my heart, from my mind, and to share it and see the feedback come, you know, like them...
00:20:57
Speaker
smiling, dancing, dancing with each other.
00:21:00
Speaker
The joy radiating from them is what fills my cup.
00:21:05
Speaker
And I think maybe there's a relationship there between the two.
00:21:10
Speaker
Next up, I'm starting to see a vision for you headlining a show and everyone drinking Lucid.
00:21:16
Speaker
Yeah.
00:21:19
Speaker
Lucid flowing, people dancing, sober dance party, just functional mushrooms and nootropics.
00:21:25
Speaker
Kind of happened actually already.
00:21:26
Speaker
Yeah, this last Groove Cruise.
00:21:30
Speaker
You guys know?
00:21:32
Speaker
Oh, yeah.
00:21:34
Speaker
You guys should go.
00:21:35
Speaker
It looks amazing.
00:21:38
Speaker
It's like if you graduated Burning Man and now you get to have that experience with
00:21:48
Speaker
but without the radical self-reliance.
00:21:54
Speaker
Nice.
00:21:55
Speaker
Because now you just have to go to the buffet and eat whatever you want.
00:22:00
Speaker
You go back to your room, but everyone is dressed like they're going to the bird.
00:22:04
Speaker
Right.
00:22:05
Speaker
You don't want to bring your own water.
00:22:06
Speaker
The same vibe.
00:22:08
Speaker
I mean, it's on the opposite side of the spectrum, but it's also incredible as well.
00:22:15
Speaker
And so at Groove Cruise, we did an event called Deep House Brunch with a dear friend of mine, Scotty Boy.
00:22:23
Speaker
I think you guys know Scotty.
00:22:25
Speaker
And at this, the party, which was like on a Sunday on the ship, we actually did have a Lucid activation in which it was behind the dance floor and we were serving everyone Lucid while Nikki was playing and then I played after her.
00:22:44
Speaker
So in a sense, that did kind of happen.
00:22:46
Speaker
That's amazing.
00:22:47
Speaker
Wow.
00:22:48
Speaker
I can imagine it was a liftoff.
00:22:50
Speaker
What a way to get the party going.
00:22:53
Speaker
And what a cool, I mean, again, this evolution, you know, there's so many things that were perfect for opening our minds and hearts when we discovered the Ten Principles and Burning Man.
00:23:06
Speaker
And...
00:23:07
Speaker
After a decade or two decades or more, it's like, how do you integrate these things into a year round life?
00:23:14
Speaker
And you can't party like you're around like that.
00:23:17
Speaker
I tried for 26 years, but eventually the body says, hey, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
00:23:23
Speaker
And slow down.
00:23:24
Speaker
Yeah, and so like finding these evolutionary branches of health information
00:23:31
Speaker
and expansion and creativity and gifting.
00:23:35
Speaker
I think it's just, it's a really beautiful role modeling of how this can all work in a healthy way.
00:23:40
Speaker
Yeah, you know, I remember some of my early days on the playa, I didn't know how to take care of my immune system.
00:23:49
Speaker
I mean, I didn't even think about that.
00:23:51
Speaker
But as the years went on, I started to realize that I could actually have a much better time when I was taking better care of myself, right?
00:23:58
Speaker
And this is a perfect example, the learning that functional mushrooms and nootropics can actually help our brain function, help our immune systems, help us just feel so much better in our bodies.
00:24:13
Speaker
And we'd go into these places that
00:24:16
Speaker
we might not be able to reach when we're depleted, for example.
00:24:20
Speaker
And so how awesome that here we are as veteran burners or adults learning the value of actually if we want to keep playing as hard as we love to, then we got to make sure that we're taking really good care of ourselves and how amazing that
00:24:36
Speaker
that you now have a product that can reach far and wide and people can actually enjoy

Types of Lucid Products

00:24:42
Speaker
it.
00:24:42
Speaker
So I'd love to have you give a little spark out to our listeners around the different types of lucid that are available and what's actually in these drinks.
00:24:54
Speaker
So yeah, the lucid comes in three different forms.
00:24:59
Speaker
It comes in the form of coffee.
00:25:02
Speaker
It comes in the form of chai and matcha.
00:25:05
Speaker
Ceremonial grade matcha, which is the best.
00:25:10
Speaker
And it's really, really, really good.
00:25:14
Speaker
The core of Lucid that's underneath those flavors or the form that they come in is the mushroom stack, which is lion's mane, cordyceps, tremella, and turkey tail.
00:25:29
Speaker
Have you guys heard of those?
00:25:31
Speaker
Are you familiar with them?
00:25:32
Speaker
Tremella I had not heard of.
00:25:33
Speaker
The other ones I've heard of.
00:25:34
Speaker
Tremela is something new to us here in the States, but has been used by the Chinese culture for hundreds, maybe thousands of years.
00:25:51
Speaker
And they call it the beauty mushroom.
00:25:55
Speaker
And the reason why is that it's serving for your skin complexion.
00:26:00
Speaker
It helps your skin cells retain moisture and helps your skin glow.
00:26:07
Speaker
And which makes sense that, you know, like the Asian cultures, they all look very young.
00:26:13
Speaker
Yeah.
00:26:15
Speaker
And literally, based on research, it has been part of their culture for as long as they can even remember, which is interesting because I haven't really seen many products here that have it.
00:26:26
Speaker
So those are the four mushroom stacks.
00:26:29
Speaker
Now, on the nootropic side, nootropics, just to give a little sidebar on those, nootropics are...

Debate on Health Product Ingredients

00:26:39
Speaker
cognitive enhancers.
00:26:40
Speaker
So fun fact, caffeine is a type of nootropic, right?
00:26:45
Speaker
It increases alertness in the brain.
00:26:49
Speaker
L-theanine helps calm the brain, which is part of the nootropic stack.
00:26:56
Speaker
Alpha-GPC is another.
00:26:59
Speaker
Helps you focus.
00:27:01
Speaker
L-tyrosine helps with mood.
00:27:05
Speaker
And ginkgo biloba helps...
00:27:08
Speaker
With blood circulation, it's a vasodilator, so it helps move all of these nutrients in your body.
00:27:15
Speaker
And the last is creatine, which has a stigma for being a gym rat supplement.
00:27:26
Speaker
But studies show that at a low dose, creatine is actually a very powerful nootropic because it's fuel.
00:27:35
Speaker
It's fuel for your brain.
00:27:38
Speaker
So it helps your brain just fire on all pistons at a low dose.
00:27:45
Speaker
You know, a regular dose of creatine is almost like a protein scoop is worth.
00:27:49
Speaker
But, you know, in Lucid, it's literally like a quarter, a quarter teaspoon.
00:27:54
Speaker
So despite the stigma, which is one of the things that we have to kind of get through because a lot of people are like, oh, creatine, like that's, it's a workout supplement.
00:28:02
Speaker
And it's like, no, we're going to educate you on this.
00:28:04
Speaker
It's actually also at a low dose, really good for your brain health.
00:28:09
Speaker
It helps you like really think at the maximum level.
00:28:14
Speaker
So those are the two stacks.
00:28:16
Speaker
Those are the two stacks.
00:28:18
Speaker
It seems like the, I mean, the, the,
00:28:21
Speaker
articles and discussions online about creatine and caffeine are like, you know, changing and shifting pretty rapidly, you know, like the health guru people are including these things in their in their daily recommendations pretty consistently, which is, you know, it's such a different world.
00:28:42
Speaker
Like I remember
00:28:44
Speaker
like, wait, we're supposed to have butter in our coffee now?
00:28:46
Speaker
Like, wait, what?
00:28:47
Speaker
That's like, but I'm glad that people like you that have done the research and done the personal laboratory testing and saying, this is what works best.
00:28:55
Speaker
And it's something that you can do daily.
00:28:57
Speaker
It's something you can do daily, yeah.
00:29:00
Speaker
And it's one of those where you just gotta educate people and just push past that stigma, right?
00:29:05
Speaker
And some companies are too scared to, but what we can do is just educate people.
00:29:13
Speaker
And just a quick, another side note too, our next generation, Lucid, that's coming out, will have prebiotics in it.
00:29:23
Speaker
So now it's mushrooms, nootropics, and prebiotics.
00:29:30
Speaker
A deeper focus on gut health.
00:29:34
Speaker
Lucid already focuses on gut health, but this actually further deepens that focus.
00:29:41
Speaker
Yeah.
00:29:42
Speaker
Well, and you know what I realized you left one out.
00:29:45
Speaker
That's actually my favorite is the dream.
00:29:48
Speaker
One of your newest product dream, a lucid, which is like a nighttime beverage that has all of the good stuff in it too.
00:29:56
Speaker
It doesn't have the same stack.
00:29:58
Speaker
No, no.
00:29:59
Speaker
So lucid dream, yeah, helps your body optimize your sleep.
00:30:06
Speaker
It helps your nervous system land the plane.
00:30:10
Speaker
So it's not sedating.
00:30:12
Speaker
It is more, I guess you would say, neutralizing or calming.
00:30:18
Speaker
So it allows your body to naturally feel better.
00:30:23
Speaker
the state that it should be in.
00:30:25
Speaker
If you're tired, then yes, you should be tired.
00:30:29
Speaker
So it'll help bring it into that state.
00:30:33
Speaker
And then it also helps your body restore while you sleep.
00:30:35
Speaker
So the mushroom stack in that is reishi, chaga, oh my gosh, king trumpet,
00:30:48
Speaker
And it does have an overlapping mushroom, which is the tremella, because the more tremella you can take, especially while you sleep, now you're getting your beauty sleep.
00:31:01
Speaker
And then the nootropics in that is...
00:31:04
Speaker
Bacopa monyari, which is a nootropic that helps with building cognitive function, brain health and memory and passion flower extract, jujube extract and magnesium.
00:31:24
Speaker
Magnesium.
00:31:26
Speaker
Wow.
00:31:26
Speaker
Magnesium 3 and 8.
00:31:27
Speaker
There's different types of magnesium.
00:31:28
Speaker
Magnesium 3 and 8 is the most bioavailable.
00:31:32
Speaker
Yeah.
00:31:34
Speaker
So those help calm the nervous system and help you kind of towards the end of the day.
00:31:43
Speaker
And you know what, I've actually drank in the I've drank the dream sometimes in the middle of the day, if I am noticing, I need to calm down because I'm like a hummingbird sometimes and I'm like getting shit done and I'm like, running around and all the things and then when I have a break in the afternoon, sometimes it's nice to just go.
00:32:01
Speaker
okay, Betsy, time to just chill out a little bit, like just relax.
00:32:06
Speaker
And then I will drink some of the dream to just feel my, and it really does help me feel centered and calm, but not sleepy.
00:32:14
Speaker
Yeah.
00:32:15
Speaker
And the same thing too, like I know at first I was a little hesitant to drink it before bed because it has cacao in it.
00:32:23
Speaker
But it actually doesn't keep me awake.
00:32:26
Speaker
Whereas other types of drinks that have cacao in it kind of elevates.
00:32:31
Speaker
Well, it's cocoa.
00:32:34
Speaker
Oh, that's why.
00:32:36
Speaker
You flip the O and the A. Oh, no wonder.
00:32:40
Speaker
Flip the O and the A and then... You know what that means?
00:32:42
Speaker
You don't have caffeine.
00:32:42
Speaker
Yeah.
00:32:43
Speaker
Well, but do you guys know the difference between cacao and cocoa?
00:32:47
Speaker
Nope.
00:32:49
Speaker
So raw cacao is what you're referring to, which does have stimulating effects because it's high in theobromine, which is a stimulant that's in chocolate.
00:33:05
Speaker
You eat a bunch of chocolate, even as a kid, and then you're...
00:33:08
Speaker
you know, Halloween time, and you're just like running around the house, that's the theobromine in it.
00:33:13
Speaker
And cocoa is dutched cocoa, meaning that it's alkalized.
00:33:23
Speaker
And it's a process that roasts the cacao beans.
00:33:29
Speaker
And when you roast them, it cooks away the majority of that theobromine.
00:33:35
Speaker
And you're left with a more deeper, just richer, chocolatey flavor that is not so bitter, as bitter as cacao.
00:33:47
Speaker
And so it doesn't have that stimulating effect.
00:33:50
Speaker
I mean, it's got trace amounts, but it's, I mean, we're talking like fractions.
00:33:57
Speaker
That's why.
00:33:58
Speaker
Oh, I love that.
00:33:58
Speaker
Okay.
00:33:59
Speaker
The little two cents.
00:34:01
Speaker
Yeah, just change the letters.
00:34:05
Speaker
That's amazing.
00:34:07
Speaker
But we have gotten that before, that people are saying, oh, yeah, I think it's going to keep me up because of the cacao.
00:34:11
Speaker
Right, yeah, but it's cocoa.
00:34:13
Speaker
That's awesome.
00:34:14
Speaker
Well, I love learning from you.
00:34:16
Speaker
And one thing that you actually illuminated into my awareness that I'd love to see if you could speak on is the value of having the fruiting body.

Importance of Mushroom Extracts

00:34:27
Speaker
in this product versus maybe some other mushroom drinks that don't use the fruiting body.
00:34:33
Speaker
Can you speak a little bit to that?
00:34:36
Speaker
Yeah, it's something that a lot of consumers don't have a lot of awareness around when people are buying products with fortune mushrooms, especially now that the trend is so big and there's like
00:34:58
Speaker
so many products out there.
00:35:00
Speaker
And just because it says mushrooms on the label doesn't mean you should, you know, not look at the label.
00:35:07
Speaker
So my best advice is to look at the label and look at the type of mushroom that is stated on the set label.
00:35:19
Speaker
So the two things that are important, one is what you just said, is the fruiting bodies or the type of mushroom extract that's in it.
00:35:27
Speaker
And two is the dosage.
00:35:29
Speaker
A lot of people think that just because it says on the label, that means they're getting full dosage.
00:35:35
Speaker
we clearly state like you are getting 2000 milligrams of mushroom extract per serving.
00:35:43
Speaker
And so that's important too.
00:35:44
Speaker
I just wanted to highlight that real quick as well, but to also focus on the type of quality of the mushroom extract itself is,
00:35:55
Speaker
fruiting body is literally what it is it is the fruit the fruiting mushrooms that are being harvested off of the block that it grows on so do you guys know how mushrooms grow
00:36:11
Speaker
On a log?
00:36:11
Speaker
Not well.
00:36:12
Speaker
On a log?
00:36:14
Speaker
Fairies come and sprinkle seeds, something like that.
00:36:17
Speaker
Fairies?
00:36:17
Speaker
Okay, so we got a log.
00:36:18
Speaker
Fairies and a log.
00:36:22
Speaker
In the forest?
00:36:24
Speaker
There's some truth to both, maybe?
00:36:27
Speaker
At least what it feels like.
00:36:29
Speaker
The log, yeah, some mushrooms grow on a log.
00:36:34
Speaker
When cultivating them, actually it's sawdust.
00:36:38
Speaker
So it could be sawdust, it could be grain, it could be oats.
00:36:42
Speaker
And so when you are cultivating it like on a farm, you have blocks of these oats or grain, and then you inoculate them with the mushroom spores.
00:36:57
Speaker
The mushroom spores then turn into mycelium, and mycelium is like this white network looking fiber that grows over the block.
00:37:10
Speaker
And then once it grows all the way around the block, it's like the whole thing turns white.
00:37:17
Speaker
And then once it fully colonizes, then it knows, oh, okay, it's time to grow mushrooms.
00:37:23
Speaker
then it will grow the fruiting bodies.
00:37:27
Speaker
So there are a few types of ways to make mushroom extract.
00:37:32
Speaker
The cheapest way is to make it with mycelial biomass, which means that block that I just talked about is mycelial biomass.
00:37:43
Speaker
So without even waiting for the mushrooms to grow, they just, you take that and then you throw it into a blender and then you make the extract out of that.
00:37:52
Speaker
Now there's an argument saying that there's nutrients in there that can be extracted, which is true, but it's also being mixed with all of the grains and the oats or the sawdust or whatever.
00:38:11
Speaker
It's being put into that vat that is being extracted.
00:38:16
Speaker
So the potency isn't there.
00:38:17
Speaker
It's super cheap because you don't have to wait for the mushrooms to grow.
00:38:22
Speaker
And so a lot of people do that, take that route.
00:38:27
Speaker
The in-between is waiting for the mushrooms to grow and then taking the whole block, throwing it in the blender and making an extract out of it, which still has that mixture of like the oats and the grain and all that.
00:38:39
Speaker
And it's a very starchy process.
00:38:40
Speaker
So if you have ever drink in a mushroom coffee, I don't know if you've tried other brands, you'll notice that there's a lot of sediment at the bottom.
00:38:50
Speaker
It's because there's a lot of there's the remaining starch from the grain and the oats and all that.
00:38:58
Speaker
the highest potency, the highest route is what I just said, the 100% fruiting bodies, because you're literally taking just the bodies, which now gets dried up and then ground up, and now you're just left with this, just the ground up mushrooms.
00:39:19
Speaker
Then that's being put into a vat, and then it's being extracted.
00:39:23
Speaker
So you have...
00:39:26
Speaker
the pure highest amount of beta-glucans, polysaccharides, all of the nutrients that are in the mushrooms that are being extracted.
00:39:35
Speaker
So that's sort of an overview.
00:39:38
Speaker
I mean, you can really go deep into it all, but that's kind of the quick overview of the type of mushroom extract that you can get.
00:39:45
Speaker
the mycelial biomass, the middle one is called full spectrum.
00:39:50
Speaker
And then the highest is from fruiting bodies.
00:39:53
Speaker
And that's the highest potency.
00:39:54
Speaker
The difference between the lowest and the highest is about half the potency.
00:39:58
Speaker
Just so you guys know.
00:40:01
Speaker
Awesome.
00:40:02
Speaker
Yeah.
00:40:05
Speaker
Well, I feel thirsty.
00:40:10
Speaker
I know I've been chugging my lucid right here.
00:40:13
Speaker
I'm like, wow.
00:40:14
Speaker
Do you guys drink it hot or iced?
00:40:16
Speaker
I haven't done it iced.
00:40:19
Speaker
Me neither.
00:40:19
Speaker
I haven't even thought of that.
00:40:20
Speaker
I've only been doing it hot.
00:40:22
Speaker
Do you like iced coffee?
00:40:23
Speaker
Yeah.
00:40:25
Speaker
Okay, maybe try it iced.
00:40:27
Speaker
Yeah, summertime.
00:40:28
Speaker
Yeah, all right.
00:40:29
Speaker
Tomorrow I will do it iced.
00:40:32
Speaker
There you go.
00:40:33
Speaker
Yeah.
00:40:33
Speaker
Part of this conversation was inspired by the fact that Betsy and I have been
00:40:41
Speaker
really enjoying this product for months and months and months and months and months and

Collaboration Announcement with Lucid

00:40:44
Speaker
months.
00:40:44
Speaker
And so we reached out and said, could we kind of work together?
00:40:50
Speaker
And could we like make it official that we love this product and could you be our sponsor?
00:40:57
Speaker
And so part of this conversation is for us to kind of announce that, hey, we are super proud to be sponsored by Lucid.
00:41:06
Speaker
It is a...
00:41:08
Speaker
I think it is really critical for us to, if we, it's related to the origins of this conversation with Burning Man and gifting and integrity and like the goal here.
00:41:20
Speaker
And sparks of inspiration.
00:41:22
Speaker
Right, sparks of inspiration.
00:41:23
Speaker
The goal here wasn't like, can we squeeze transactions out of some company?
00:41:28
Speaker
It's like, can we,
00:41:31
Speaker
share gifts.
00:41:32
Speaker
Can we, can we, and so I'm super stoked, really, really happy to be consuming this with a little extra warmness inside.
00:41:40
Speaker
So thank you so much.
00:41:42
Speaker
Yeah.
00:41:43
Speaker
And also like to spread sparks far and wide.
00:41:46
Speaker
That's our main intention for this podcast.
00:41:48
Speaker
And when we find something amazing, we want more people to know about it.
00:41:52
Speaker
And so for those of you who have been listening and maybe it's your first time listening, you will be hearing us speak about Lucid more regularly on future episodes, giving the shout outs, wellness hacks, and a lot of inspiration that Lucid is putting out.
00:42:08
Speaker
And if you're watching us, you'll see a fancy lucid mugs.
00:42:12
Speaker
Love the branding.
00:42:13
Speaker
Mine's a little different.
00:42:14
Speaker
Yeah.
00:42:14
Speaker
Well, so cool.
00:42:18
Speaker
And also like the lucid package, I always get so excited because there's a sticker and it comes with this cool spoon and a little like frother thing and the box even is cool.
00:42:28
Speaker
It's just like you guys just so have so much attention to detail on this product line.
00:42:34
Speaker
Not only is it amazing for us to be ingesting, but the whole experience in itself, like I even a couple of months ago did an unboxing video because it was so beautiful.
00:42:45
Speaker
So, yeah, I'm really excited to get to just work with you, collaborate with you guys.
00:42:52
Speaker
And it's so your co-founder and then Mark DeVoe and Kurt.
00:42:59
Speaker
Yeah.
00:42:59
Speaker
So the three of you.
00:43:00
Speaker
Right.
00:43:02
Speaker
The three of us, yep.
00:43:03
Speaker
Yep, amazing.
00:43:06
Speaker
So huge shout outs.
00:43:07
Speaker
We're so grateful for this friendship and for this collaboration, for this opportunity to make our skin glow.
00:43:16
Speaker
We can get healthy and fit while having fun doing it.
00:43:20
Speaker
And while voting with our dollar for things that we think matter and for companies that we believe in and that have integrity.
00:43:28
Speaker
So this is just one of those win-win-win things.
00:43:31
Speaker
We are endorsing from a very personal place this.
00:43:36
Speaker
Give it a try.
00:43:37
Speaker
Yes, we'll of course put the link in the comments.
00:43:41
Speaker
And so in Stay Spark tradition, we always love doing a closing sparks.
00:43:46
Speaker
And that can be like if there was anything that was mentioned that is like we want to highlight extra or if there's like something that wasn't mentioned.
00:43:53
Speaker
So do either of you have a closing spark?
00:43:58
Speaker
My closing spark is just the inspiration of seeing the way that
00:44:05
Speaker
you, Tovin, have put energy into these multiple paths of creativity.
00:44:11
Speaker
And that, you know, as we talked, I could just really feel the Burning Man dust, you know, as deep in the motivations.
00:44:20
Speaker
And it's something that is...
00:44:23
Speaker
a challenge and it's like that, how do you stay connected to your, the sparks of inspiration and how do you maintain and be a part of the default world?
00:44:37
Speaker
And I'm super inspired by the way that you're doing that.
00:44:40
Speaker
So thanks for sharing with us.
00:44:42
Speaker
Oh, thanks.
00:44:45
Speaker
I gotta, I gotta, I gotta still, I gotta, I gotta pull from my inspiration here.
00:44:51
Speaker
Well, I have one if you want to think about it.
00:44:52
Speaker
Okay.
00:44:54
Speaker
Okay.
00:44:55
Speaker
So yeah, I'm feeling my closing spark is really about how inspiring it is to hear your story around just getting really in touch with your own journey of health and vitality and, you know, doing that research and working with different ingredients to find something that really worked for you and to be in that listening environment.
00:45:16
Speaker
of people asking for what you know and then choosing to follow that as guidance to create something.
00:45:24
Speaker
And now here you are.
00:45:26
Speaker
You spoke to jumping on the metaphorical surfboard for your music, but you also have done that with nootropics and mushrooms.
00:45:34
Speaker
And it's just really cool to see how this kind of like spark turned to a flame and now it's just really helping a lot of people.
00:45:42
Speaker
So I'm really inspired by you and the way that you're choosing to put your magic out into the world.
00:45:48
Speaker
Oh, thank you.
00:45:49
Speaker
Yeah, I appreciate that.
00:45:51
Speaker
Well, I'll bring this closing spark into the fold here where, you know, these stories don't go without challenges.
00:46:04
Speaker
Right.
00:46:05
Speaker
And so I also want to bring that into light that all of these journeys do have a challenge and into the stories, but for me,
00:46:19
Speaker
what i've uh what i how i navigate through my life is that every challenge that i see is an opportunity for growth and every mistake is an opportunity for a lesson and to learn something a little bit more about yourself and that is something that has led to the growth and the manifestation of
00:46:42
Speaker
my music with lucid and any of the endeavors right if you hit a challenge it's instead of being like why is this happening to me it is what is the lesson here that the universe has to present to me so that i can walk through that door and grow from it so yeah
00:47:06
Speaker
So good.
00:47:07
Speaker
Oh, so grateful.
00:47:09
Speaker
Yes.
00:47:09
Speaker
I love this conversation and we'll wrap it up with just letting people know how to find every one of us.
