Is it hard for you to celebrate your wins?  Does it feel weird to say you are proud of yourself?  Why is it so much easier to commiserate than to celebrate?

In this SPARKLE SNACK (shorter episode) @Betsyhoo and @HalcyonPink share some of the ways they practice highlighting achievements - and why it is so important.

Speaker
Hello and welcome to Stay Sparked, this series of sparkle episodes here to inspire a little sparkle into your day.
00:00:13
Speaker
I'm Betsy Finkelhoo, the creator of the Power Affirmation Project and Somatic Bodyworker.

Meet the Hosts: Betsy and John

00:00:19
Speaker
I am John Halcyon Stinn, the host of the Hug Nation YouTube channel and the Heart Centered Men gatherings.
00:00:25
Speaker
And we always love starting with gratitude.
00:00:27
Speaker
And today I will just share, I am grateful for technology to get our message out into the world.
00:00:35
Speaker
And I am grateful for houseplants.
00:00:37
Speaker
Woo!

The Episode Theme: Celebrating Wins

00:00:39
Speaker
And today we are going to offer a little bite-sized inspiration for you all on the topic of celebrating wins and what that actually means.
00:00:49
Speaker
And so why don't you spark us off, John?
00:00:51
Speaker
Love to hear your inspiration on this topic.

Sharing Wins in Men's Groups

00:00:55
Speaker
Yeah, I just had a men's group and we had a opportunity to share our wins.
00:01:03
Speaker
And it really struck me how many people in the group struggled with the very concept or the act of sharing something that they were proud of.
00:01:13
Speaker
And it made me think about how often we are discouraged from boasting or bragging.
00:01:20
Speaker
And so we end up creating an environment where we encourage and support people to share what they are struggling with and their disappointments and their frustrations.
00:01:30
Speaker
But we don't really encourage people to share their wins.
00:01:34
Speaker
And I really want to hear people's wins because I find it so much more inspiring.
00:01:38
Speaker
Because I know they're happening.
00:01:39
Speaker
So tell me what's good.
00:01:41
Speaker
Yes, absolutely.
00:01:43
Speaker
I think that's such a great question to ask people when you see them.
00:01:45
Speaker
So what's good in your life or what are you celebrating about this past week?
00:01:49
Speaker
That's one of my favorite questions to ask friends that I get to see.

Weekly Wins Practice with Sister

00:01:53
Speaker
You know, and my sister and I actually practice this every week.
00:01:57
Speaker
We get together on a Zoom and we share our wins for the week.
00:02:01
Speaker
And we also incorporate our growth as well.
00:02:04
Speaker
And what ends up happening is when I hear her wins for the week, not only does it create a sense of intimacy and understanding of what's going on for my sister, but it also sparks my inspiration around the wins and the things that I've accomplished that week.
00:02:20
Speaker
And so when she's in her joy of like, hey, I went to Pilates three times this week, it reminds me, it's like, oh, yeah, I got on my yoga mat four times this week and I celebrate that.
00:02:29
Speaker
I'm like, OK, it reminds me, OK, I'm doing good, even though there might have been some challenges that we both got to work through.
00:02:36
Speaker
It just is so uplifting and so inspiring to do as a regular practice, especially.

Focusing on Wins and Positivity

00:02:42
Speaker
And so important considering the biology of our minds and how we are so easy to focus on what we're doing wrong, what's in the way, and what we failed at.
00:02:54
Speaker
And so it's the reason why I do gratitude practice every day for the same reason, that I need to have an appointment with myself to get my brain focused on what's going right, what are the wins.
00:03:06
Speaker
And then when I hear other people, as you said, you're like, oh, I'm
00:03:09
Speaker
I also did that today.
00:03:11
Speaker
Or, oh, that's another realm of my day that I have been dismissing or even not even giving any attention to.
00:03:18
Speaker
And if I look back at my day without consciously focusing on the stuff that went right, I will have a narrative without it.
00:03:27
Speaker
And that's unfair to myself.
00:03:29
Speaker
Yeah, absolutely.
00:03:31
Speaker
I know we're productive beings and sometimes our success is measured by how productive we are.
00:03:36
Speaker
And sometimes if we're not particularly productive in a day, we can get hard on ourselves.

Celebrating Small Wins

00:03:42
Speaker
But when we actually choose to look through the lens of celebrating wins, we can start to find things that we actually are doing that are contributing to a good life, such as I rested today.
00:03:55
Speaker
That could be a win if needed.
00:03:57
Speaker
Or I went for a walk today.
00:03:59
Speaker
That's a win.
00:04:01
Speaker
Or I finished my book.
00:04:02
Speaker
Maybe it's a huge one.
00:04:03
Speaker
You know, and I think that it's so valuable to keep coming back to that inner celebration as well as sharing with others.
00:04:10
Speaker
But, you know, I had mentioned before my sister and I doing it, but we also write it down.
00:04:16
Speaker
And I notice in my journal, when I go back and look at what I was celebrating weeks ago, it gives me more insight into my growth as well.
00:04:26
Speaker
And to see what I've been focusing on, what I've been working on, kind of as a tracker in a way to through the lens of celebrating.
00:04:35
Speaker
Oh, I love that.
00:04:35
Speaker
I mean, and I think that's a great practice because when you have those times when you really are down on yourself and you can't think of anything good that you're doing, it's so nice to have a record of evidence of

Documenting Achievements to Combat Self-Judgment

00:04:50
Speaker
here, all the things.
00:04:50
Speaker
Oh, no, I can do things.
00:04:52
Speaker
I have done things.
00:04:53
Speaker
I actually have a private blog.
00:04:55
Speaker
that I copy-paste things when I get some praise or I get something that reminds me of accomplishments or feeling good that I can go to as like a document to disprove my self-judgment.
00:05:11
Speaker
And we know mental health these days is so important.
00:05:14
Speaker
There's a whole month dedicated to it.
00:05:16
Speaker
There's so many therapists and so many things out in the world now that show the importance of mental health.
00:05:24
Speaker
And when we can really go to the gym and tend to the strength of our mental attitude, it is so important.

Mental Health and Positive Attitude

00:05:33
Speaker
It has a ripple effect on how we feel in our bodies and our emotions and our lives.
00:05:38
Speaker
And so why not cultivate celebrations as a daily practice?
00:05:43
Speaker
And so that's my spark.
00:05:45
Speaker
I would just love to spark all of you out there as a reminder to celebrate yourself and to ask people in your life, what are you celebrating this week?
00:05:55
Speaker
What are you celebrating today?
00:05:57
Speaker
Because there's a lot of heaviness in the world.
00:05:59
Speaker
Unfortunately, there always has been and there always will.
00:06:03
Speaker
And it's really important for us to keep coming back to the good things that are happening as well.
00:06:08
Speaker
Yeah.

John's Productivity Approach: Love and Small Wins

00:06:10
Speaker
And I guess my spark will be that reframe the productivity.
00:06:17
Speaker
The way that I do it is I say, I want to add love in the world today.
00:06:22
Speaker
And if sometimes all that means is self-care, sometimes all that means is rest, sometimes all that means is...
00:06:29
Speaker
forgiving myself for being in bed all day.
00:06:31
Speaker
That's the love.
00:06:32
Speaker
It's the love towards me.
00:06:34
Speaker
And sometimes I'm more resourced and I can be spread a little bit of love to the person, the cashier that I'm interacting with.
00:06:41
Speaker
Or I can send a few texts saying, hey, I'm thinking about you.
00:06:44
Speaker
And sometimes I'm super resourced.
00:06:46
Speaker
And then I get out into the world and I give a gift or I'm just prepared when the opportunity comes to be more of service comes.
00:06:54
Speaker
But avoiding the dangerous trap of feeling like
00:06:58
Speaker
Those wins need to be grand.
00:07:01
Speaker
The wins can be teeny tiny and they can be as little as self-forgiveness.
00:07:06
Speaker
I forgave myself for not doing the thing that I said I was going to do yesterday.
00:07:12
Speaker
So beautiful.
00:07:14
Speaker
I love that so much.
00:07:15
Speaker
Yes.
