Life Hack: Treating Events as Data

00:00:18
Speaker
Okay, well, you just mentioned the life hack. I had to hit the record button. Life hack for people. What is it?
00:00:26
Speaker
Hi there guys, so life hack for people. When we experience inputs from our environment, that could be anything. A life hack is whenever we have an experience, try not to assign an emotion to it. Instead, register it as an unemotional data point. You see a friend, they greet you, unemotional data point. You are in traffic, rush hour traffic, and someone cuts you off. That's a data point.

When we assign emotion, there's an energy cost. One of the life hacks is you want more energy, you've got chronic fatigue, chronic stress, chronic anxiety. Start to be mindful of the inputs and moment to moment experiences you have and how much do you assign emotion.

You know, I love that. We just gave a talk recently to a big group of people. It was about sticky situations. Great talk, roundtable discussions, blah, blah, blah. You had mentioned about

the windshield versus rear view mirror. I think one of the things that I hear you talk about that life hack, if you are so focused on what's just happened, what's behind you because you can't detach from the emotion of it, you're not looking out the front windshield and bad things happen. You get cognitive overload.

The Role of Running & Exercise

00:01:45
Speaker
You can't concentrate on the next thing that's going to happen.

Speaker
People ask me all the time, oh, you run so much. That must be why you have so much energy. No, that is not true. I have tried to not have an emotion assigned to every input through the day. No one's ever come up to me and said, oh my gosh, you run so much. They've actually kind of said, maybe you should start running.
00:02:12
Speaker
Although if you are going to take up running, I would say it does give you a little bit of an energy boost, but none as more important, especially if you're like me and you're used to signing emotion to everything, you see life in a flurry of emotions. Well, and what I would say to pivot into exercise,
00:02:32
Speaker
There's lots of data that shows when you exercise, the endorphin rush you get, the things it does in your brain, the rest of your body, you are generally much more capable of dealing with a whole lot of things that life's gonna throw at you. Well, listen guys, we love what, well, I don't know, we love what we're talking about.
