Liverpool vs Southampton Crossover Episode

00:00:42
Speaker
Hello and welcome to the Daily Liverpool and Daily Southampton crossover episode ahead of this weekend's match between Liverpool and Southampton. My name is Louis Easton.
00:00:55
Speaker
Joining me today is, I mean this has to be a GSPN first, Oscar Easton. There we go, like my cousin, my actual cousin is joining me on an episode. I never saw this coming.
00:01:06
Speaker
Well thank you very much for joining me Oscar. and No problem. thanks thanks pat Thanks for inviting me. And Zach Ingo Finch, the man who has been at Daily Southampton since the beginning of the season and has been supporting Southampton all his life, just like Oscar.
00:01:20
Speaker
Suffering is actually top versus bottom this weekend, so we're going to have... It may feel like a very disrespectful episode of the Daily Liverpool Daily Southampton podcast, but thank you very much for still turning up. I do admire your resilience.
00:01:39
Speaker
Do you feel resilient for the rest of the

Southampton's Managerial and Tactical Struggles

00:01:40
Speaker
season? Let's start off with that question, Zach. Do I feel resilient for the rest of the season? i would like to not watch us get beaten by more than five goals every game for the end of the season. and If that happens, I think I'll be happy.
00:01:55
Speaker
Will it happen Saturday? Probably not. I could see us getting a drubbing. especially considering our current manager seems to just roll the dice on what position and what lineup he's kind of playing.
00:02:06
Speaker
Sentiment has very much turned on him in recent but like weeks, us included, because he's just been odd decision-making. I think even he's kind of noticed now that his time is up and is kind of like, yeah, I'd probably, i would like to stick around after the season.
00:02:23
Speaker
In the week, It's kind of been come out that he will be potentially replaced with Danny Roll at the end of the season, which you know we've kind of discussed about a little bit.
00:02:34
Speaker
But yeah, it's just yeah we we keep going to the games and we keep hoping something different going to happen. And it tends not to. Yeah. for This poor broken soul.
00:02:47
Speaker
i So we visited Southampton twice this season. Liverpool and winning 2-1 in the League Cup and winning 3-2 in the Premier League. but Pretty close results. And...
00:02:59
Speaker
and I've i've watched i watched Southampton really take the fight to us in both of our visits to St. Mary's. Oscar, did you see it that way? Did you see some fights? And is that just the minimum of what you're hoping for this weekend? I don't want to write Southampton off. It does seem like a bit... I'm not going to say anything, actually, because I predicted that we'd be 4-0 up against PSG at halftime.
00:03:22
Speaker
Now, that word you use, resilience, is interesting because that's something that I don't think we've seen in any way, shape or form this year from the team. Actually, probably a bit more so under Russell Martin, to be honest. And I think both of our games we played you was with him as manager.
00:03:38
Speaker
i think we are and not necessarily playing worse now, but are definitely worstly placed to play you this time. The way we play now, I am very nervous for

Liverpool's Strengths and Southampton's Challenges

00:03:49
Speaker
Saturday. I think this could be an absolute pasting because I'm pretty convinced he's going to stick with the this man-for-man marking suicide football, which against Salah, Jota, the attackers that you've got is going to be a problem.
00:04:07
Speaker
So, well yes, not particularly optimistic. Well, that's that's this. yeah I'm trying to make this interesting. You know, I'm trying to offer a hand to Southampton, but something very interesting I saw in your match against Chelsea last time out.
00:04:27
Speaker
Joe Aribo at centre back. You talked about those random positions. Zach, that's quite the animated response from you. What do you make of Joe Rebo at centre-back? Are you interested at all by Ivan Juric's experimenting or do you just want it to end?
00:04:43
Speaker
but I can understand that we've got a bit of than an injury crisis at the moment, but we also did have players that could have played in those positions and just actually playing players in their correct positions at the moment just seems like a fever dream.
00:04:56
Speaker
And that is is a problem. You know, to to be clear, Greg makes this point quite a lot. He is our top goal scorer. And he has dropped back and back and back. We've put him centre-back. And, like, he did an okay job, considering that he's not in that natural position.
00:05:10
Speaker
full But it just seemed like a bunch of bizarre decision-making try and, you know... it would be interesting to see what he would be like with a full squad with no injuries.
00:05:21
Speaker
But I also don't think that it would be that much different how it is now. Because all of the players that we've got our injured, whilst collectively are good for 85 minutes, are also the same sort of players that have made the small mistakes that have put us in the position we're in so far this season.
00:05:37
Speaker
like like yeah I think we're still top of the table for the most individual errors that led to goal-scoring opportunities. i but yeah with This is the thing, right? I understand it's going make it interesting to make it exciting. we We're just kind of done now.
00:05:49
Speaker
like Sorry, I shouldn't be laughing. We literally did an episode, Greg did an episode on what the future is going to look like in the championship. we We did a bit of a reminisce, you know, and Oscar did a bit of a reminisce yesterday as well, wouldn didn't we? on the On like old transfers that we've been linked with. and and I think we just kind of have to live in those days where you are actually poaching our players. Whereas now, you know...
00:06:12
Speaker
Who do you want from our team? six it's It's a good question. and and I was just going to mention Joe Rebo, also your top goal scorer this season with three goals in the Premier League.
00:06:23
Speaker
Anyway, moving on. So I would like to... I think our second and top goal scorer is also a centre-back for the record. So... Oh, well, yeah, someone that's not going to be playing. Bednarek. And yeah, you have got a few injuries. I'm just looking at it now. Fraser, Lallana. I mean, that would have been amazing see Lallana play at Anfield again.
00:06:43
Speaker
Bednarek, Stewart, Ugo Chukwu all out. For Liverpool, we're just missing Gakpo at the moment, still coming back from an injury.

Liverpool Players as Potential Assets for Southampton

00:06:51
Speaker
we' We'll talk more about Liverpool later, I'm sure.
00:06:53
Speaker
and But just moving into comparison of the squads. I do this thing with crossover episodes whenever I'm hosting them.
00:07:03
Speaker
One player that you could have from each other's side. and I'll go with your team first because, I mean, this let's face it, you're going back into the championship next season probably with a look to regroup and rebuild probably.
00:07:18
Speaker
From each of you now, if you could have one of our players to help you in that rebuild, what's the position you're looking to strengthen the most? And is there anyone from the Liverpool side that you think would be a massive catalyst in that rebuild? Oscar, I'll start with you.
00:07:30
Speaker
Do Do you know, probably position wise, we need a goal scorer. We need a striker, which is actually probably something you guys are looking for as well. It's true.
00:07:40
Speaker
I'm not saying I wouldn't take anyone because at this point I probably would take anyone. I think Gakpo, I mean, I would have been interested to see what would have happened with Gakpo if he had come here before he came to Liverpool. Because we were quite heavily linked with him at the time. And I think it was just the fact that he didn't score.
00:08:00
Speaker
If he scores one, he's going to Saints. If he scores two, he's going to Leeds. If he scores three, he's staying or something like that. Yeah. So he might have been one one that would have been of interest.
00:08:10
Speaker
I think for us, what we need as well is we need someone with a bit of character that's going to help, that's that's just going to help rebuild a crumbled morale. and And so again, you know, maybe maybe Van Dyke would have been another, you know, it sounds silly, obviously, you're obviously going to take Virgil Van Dyke, but someone with a bit ofing yeah yeah of might have helped, even though he's a bit of a controversial figure around the club. but Oh yeah, I can imagine. za He was really trying not to punch his monitor at the mere mention of Virgil van Dijk going back to Southampton. You say that though, that's what I take back in heartbe like as a As a rebuild, as a central figure, as probably one of the best players I've ever seen in a Saints shirt, it would be van Dijk.
00:08:53
Speaker
And like as much as I'm still mad about the stupid private plane Instagram photo that he uploaded in the, ja just when he what he got his initial move denied and he was having secret meetings in hotel rooms and he was uploading photos he was like, you know, you look at him up as well. Yeah. yeah like you but But you look at what came out of that for for you and you look at the career he's had now and you look where he's at and it's like, yeah, I'll take him back in heartbeat.
00:09:17
Speaker
And other than that, strengthen up the midfield, Shaboslai or Endu, just anyone to just sit in that midfield area because that is where we're going to struggle. and And that is where we've struggled massively. We keep getting overrun in the midfield and the yeah results in our centre-backs have to do probably far more work than they should.
00:09:34
Speaker
so they they've but But yeah, if it was if it was I had a dream and it i could I could start from scratch, it would be Van Dijk. and so yeah i mean you we look at van dyke and we're just we just think every time he plays thank god we have this man he has bailed us out of so many difficult situations especially under klopp when it would just be van dyke and matip or canate or lovran at times as well just left back another one that we took from you i genuinely didn't realize that until i said it out loud remember van dyke was his replacement yeah
00:10:08
Speaker
You bought the guy and his replacement. We bought three players from you at the same time. I remember Lallana, Lovren and Lambert all in the same transfer. we also got the Around the same time, we got Klein, Sadio Mane. It was just an absolute bugging. i I mean, obviously, our director of football must have been a massive Saints fan at the time. They all seem to work out relatively well for us, barring Lambert, but he never was meant to be. He even spent several registration rolls, wasn't he? And he did. Yeah, he probably was. I don't know how true it is, but I'd heard rumours it was make-weight with the Lallana deal, but I don't imagine that's just sentimentality, to be brutally honest. It 100% was. And, you know, if we ever needed a penalty at crucial moment in the game, he was pretty good at those, wasn't he?
00:10:56
Speaker
and We are going to take a short break. We'll talk more about Liverpool

00:11:41
Speaker
So just before I hand over to you for your questions about Liverpool, I think, I mean, I completely forgot to answer the whole who would I take from Southampton thing in the Liverpool team. I'm just looking at your squad.
00:11:53
Speaker
I probably you're laughing, but I'm genuinely trying to concentrate here. It may be Onuatu just because we need a clear striker. i yeah i was going to say he's an aerial threat, but he hasn't scored many from corners this season, has he? Not that I can remember.
00:12:10
Speaker
He is the... He can't hit a ball, so... To be fair, did nearly score header against Chelsea, but considering his size, he he has excellent chest control.
00:12:21
Speaker
And as you might have seen I think it was the 3-2 game, or maybe it's come, I'm not sure. He can do a few step overs, but that's about it. I'm not sure if you need a goal scorer, he's your man. The height is just futile at this point, if he can't head a ball.
00:12:35
Speaker
That's basically what you're saying to me. Pretty much. probably In that case, I'd probably try and, I mean, Trent's probably off in the summer and it looks like Connor Bradley will be his replacement. But I think Kyle Walker-Peters is a terrific player under the right system, though, I will say, because he's very good with his feet and his energy is brilliant. I've seen him play live for England as well, back when he was playing for England, recently.
00:12:59
Speaker
before we had a plethora of right backs. I thought he was going to be fantastic. And I was amazed that you held on to him when you went down as well. i don't know if you felt the same way at the time. Very much so. Yeah, great player. Anyway, I'll hand over to you now. as I'm done talking.
00:13:14
Speaker
and So, it's it's yours to lose, right? Yeah. Tell me, how do you feel about it? How do I feel about it? Well, I mean, look at it this way. We come to this game... Well, we both come to this game after a rest because neither of us are in the FA Cup anymore. am I correct in saying? I can't remember.
00:13:34
Speaker
Yeah, okay, good. so But we've had to play midweek football, so I just don't want us to put all of our to have put all of our energy into PSG and then left nothing for Southampton.
00:13:47
Speaker
I will just say, as a disclaimer, the p sg is happening the PSG game is happening at the moment. It's half-time, it's nil-nil. Come on, Liverpool, let's get a good second half. Anyway, just get that out of the way. I've got my beer right here as well.
00:14:00
Speaker
Uh, but it is definitely a game to lose for Liverpool. I mean, first versus 20th. I think it says it all.

Liverpool's Title Race and Team Form

00:14:07
Speaker
Liverpool haven't lost in any of their last five. Southampton have lost four of their last five. And since Juric came in as manager, he's lost nine out of 10 in the premier league. So that's not a great stat, for the new manager. And it seems like the sacking of Russell Martin really just, it, it just made no difference at all.
00:14:27
Speaker
I think it that to answer your question short, yes, it is our game to lose. Thought as much. So obviously we sorted out the game. So is the title yours to lose?
00:14:36
Speaker
Because i'm I'm looking at title race right now and I i genuinely don't see how the the rest come back in at this point. And I don't know if anyone realistically predicted at the beginning of the season, did you... feel that way?
00:14:47
Speaker
Did you feel with new manager that you were just going to suddenly storm ahead? Or did you feel like it was going to Arsenal? And it it seems even now, like, just the gap just seems, I don't know, it's not as exciting up the top, because I think you're just running away with it.
00:15:01
Speaker
And at the bottom, also, it's the three teams that have come up are going straight back down. Yeah, it's disappointing. It is a very weird year, especially when you look at how tight it is in that battle for the top four as well. I think that's where the most interesting part of the season is still to be played. But yes, I think it definitely is ours to lose. We've only lost once all season. I can't believe I'm saying that with a new manager.
00:15:24
Speaker
It's mental, isn't it? And that game was actually at Anfield, which I find even stranger to believe. And Van Dijk was playing, so that it feels like if you have... If you have a game with Van Dijk at Anfield, you shouldn't really be losing.
00:15:37
Speaker
But we did against Forest. But, yeah, 13 points clear going into this weekend. One game played more than Arsenal, granted. But it's not Pep Guardiola's Manchester City in 2019, 2020, those years. It's...
00:15:55
Speaker
it's arsenal who haven't been champions before that's why i think we have an edge i know slot's first season but when you look at the figures that have been around the club through it all it does feel like it probably is done now the title race i don't like saying that but it probably is i i also i also actually still feel that even though this is going to sound, and I'm not saying for for a minute, I think they're going to win the title.
00:16:21
Speaker
I don't think, us I think if you lose the title, I don't think it will be to Arsenal. I think the only person it would be to would be City. I still, I just think, I know City have been terrible this shit i'm not saying they'll do it, but I just don't think Arsenal have got it in them personally. I just, but something in me says, and I'm not a massive Arteta fan as it is, I just think they are serenial, maybe not use the word, but yeah.
00:16:46
Speaker
I'm sure they would love you for saying that. yeah Well, City can get a maximum of 33 points from the rest of the season. We can get a maximum of 30.
00:16:57
Speaker
thirty And we are 19 points ahead of them at the moment. It's possible. i don't think they'll catch you. yeah i just think I just don't think Arsenal will either. i just I can't see a world at Arsenal.
00:17:11
Speaker
Maybe you just don't want to see a world that Arsenal win the title. Not a mention of Forest, maybe? is No, don't think so. would be It would be the most unbelievable Premier League title story in at least eight years.
00:17:25
Speaker
But it I would, as a neutral, I would absolutely love Forest. but And as a neutral, I'm hoping for them to win the f FA Cup as well, just because their season has been unbelievable. And I think some silverware is definitely something that they deserve at least something, or at least a final from this season.
00:17:45
Speaker
They have... They have been the story. But if you told me Liverpool would be this far clear ahead at the beginning of the season, I wouldn't have believed you.
00:17:57
Speaker
It's because it's his first season and I really didn't know what to expect. I thought we didn't look fantastic towards the end of last season as well. it There's a massive, massive change and a massive shift, but it seems to have been for the better, which is crazy to think. That midfield has been revolutionised for us. Gravenberg, McAllister, Sobosly, even at times Curtis Jones this season, I have watched it and I've thought, wow, we are good.
00:18:23
Speaker
We are very good. and Yes, you are. Thank very much. I think Gravenberg has been the biggest story of our season in terms of his his switch from last season. I mean, people will say Salah just because he's gone on that crazy run of goal assist or goal and an assist in x amount of games this year.
00:18:46
Speaker
But i I think Gravenberg has been phenomenal. His play in between the lines... switching from defense to attack and that counter-attack his pace his decision making have all been second to none and when you look at the maybe the struggles we've had up front with diogo jota returning i think uh he has been still trying to provide and darwin nunez as well he's been providing and i just think if they could uh get their finishing boots back or
00:19:19
Speaker
with Darwin Nunez, just get his finishing before he leaves in the summer, which is what it looks like will happen, then he would have his numbers recognised. And I think Salah would be, he would probably have already broken the record for most goals and assists in a season.
00:19:35
Speaker
So I think that's a position that we will invest in in the summer. a new striker, and I think we're looking at Milos Kerkhez as well for the left back, which worries me a little bit about Robertson. Maybe he's being moved on, and I don't really want to see that yet. but an interesting time to be a Liverpool fan. I'm very optimistic towards the end of the season.
00:19:51
Speaker
Maybe you we win all three. you I'm going to say at least two at than for that at the moment. by the first half so You never know, you've got a tough hurdle to overcome on Saturday.
00:20:05
Speaker
if you can if you can overcome that then you can do anything out of interest and I'm sure you've been asked this question quite a lot this year so forgive me if it's a boring one for you i know gaveve your your your your holy trinity of players that have contracted the end of season do you think do you who do you think will sign on and if you could choose one of them to keep which one would it be i said It's actually Virgil van Dijk. That's the thing. like I'm trying to say it with a straight face, but I can't because I'm saying it to two Southampton fans who have both been betrayed by him.
00:20:35
Speaker
But I think he has been ho yeah it's it was it's a long time ago now and he's been holding our defense together that entire time If you look at who he's been joined by, you know, Trent's had his own defensive criticisms.
00:20:51
Speaker
I think that's fair to say. And Van Dijk and Canate at times have just both been bailing him out. And I think Canate... has become good under the guidance of Virgil van

Impact of Virgil van Dijk and Contract Debates

00:21:03
Speaker
Dijk.
00:21:03
Speaker
Just that calmness, that ability to not make any mistakes from the back in so many games and also provide that attacking threat with those long balls and with that aerial threat in the box when he goes up for corners as well.
00:21:17
Speaker
Yeah. it's it's i i honestly think he's top three center backs ever i think it's him maldini and ramos honestly like they are just a level of above everyone else i think trent will go just because i think his head's already out the door he hasn't been putting up the best performances recently got destroyed by docker against man city granted he did nothing with it afterwards I think he's gone. i think Bradley will become the long-term replacement for him.
00:21:48
Speaker
And I have so much trust him. Salah, I think 50-50. And it's worrying me that there's not been much talk about anything being proposed at this point.
00:21:58
Speaker
I've heard about... Yeah, think the thing. Once you get into that last year, it's usually fairly indicative. and Maybe it's different with Van Dijk. But yeah, I think certainly for Salah, I know the Saudi saudi league was...
00:22:10
Speaker
rumours were rumbling last year and for me that that makes sense you know for for them as in an Arabic speaking player to come in he'd almost be the poster boy for that league if they could get him Trent as I say yeah Real Madrid you know I think he's best meant to do Bellingham as well, isn't he? So yeah, yeah probably agree with you be fair. Let's talk about salad going back to Italy. I think I heard intermentions.
00:22:36
Speaker
I can't remember what the source was or if it was trustworthy or not, but that's the club being thrown around. i think salad wants to stay. I think Van Dijk wants to say, I don't think Trent does. And I think he's probably going to leave.
00:22:49
Speaker
It'll do a McManaman, go to Real Madrid, win the Champions League, and then have a split fan base in Liverpool for the rest of his life. and Maybe he'll come back, who knows. But he's he's probably the one I wouldn't mind losing out of the three.
00:23:04
Speaker
Salah would just be so annoying, though. when he's when he clearly he clearly wants to stay he loves playing at liverpool and he's been our best player since steven gerrard and i don't want to lose him i've got such an attachment to him and he's such an icon now in liverpool and egypt and world football so we can teach you all about loss mate no yeah You get attached to a Saints player and you keep him for half a season, if that.
00:23:36
Speaker
But, you know, Tyler Diplin rumours after he started about two or three games and people had already had him sold to half the clubs in England. So it gets easier, I promise, if he does go. But I would be ob iaging surprised.
00:23:47
Speaker
I've had my fair share of heartbreaks. I think the thing is with Trent, though, is the fact that he came through the academy. So it's not like we paid anything for him and then he's leaving on a free. It's the fact that it's to a club that...
00:24:00
Speaker
what it's the fact that we are a massive incredible team at the moment and he's choosing to still go to Real Madrid and and he's from Liverpool as well and it was we got so used to talk about Gerrard rejecting all of these clubs to stay at Liverpool when we weren't that good know Chelsea were desperate for him and then I mean we want the Champions League I suppose but yeah but we weren't we we really shouldn't have.
00:24:30
Speaker
But yeah, well I think what happens for the rest of the season will also have a lot to do with it. If we win the Champions League, I think he stays.
00:24:38
Speaker
With an asterisk on the end. Anyway, that's enough contract talk for this one. I want to hear something soon, but until then, I really don't know anything. But we'll take another short break now, and then we'll get into our score predictions.

By Unique. Don't settle for off-the-shelf solutions made for just anybody. Get what's right for you right now. Right. So we'll do score predictions. But the foot before we do that, I'd just like to know, like I'll come to you first. What are you hoping for out of this game?
00:25:38
Speaker
Because I know that it's a very uphill battle, to say the least. And, you know, for you to get anything out of this game would be quite, would would be nothing short of a miracle, I think, as well.
00:25:51
Speaker
So what what are you hoping for from this? Oh, The damage minimised to like four or five goals and maybe we score so we have something to talk about.
00:26:02
Speaker
That isn't just getting battered again. At least, you know, there can be a slight amount of positivity because obviously, i think you pointed out previously, like we played well in our first two games against you this season.
00:26:14
Speaker
And they showed fight. And this is one of the big problems, I think, of of a team like ours anyway, is we seem to play, we throw our heart and soul into games against big clubs that we lose.
00:26:24
Speaker
And then the next week get battered by literally anyone we play. And that that's always been the case. And I think from yeah from my personal perspective, it's to, I guess, show a reaction to how docile we've been. It feels like we're just deer wandering into a field looking for the hunters to get shot rather than actually, you know, at least running or doing something. And and I think that's what I would like to see out of it. It's like, look, you are on the world stage. You will be playing currently the best team in the world.
00:26:53
Speaker
i Show it. Like, do something, you know. The last time, so of like, sort of last couple of times Suleiman has been out against you, you know, last season was, well, last season we played two two seasons ago technically.
00:27:05
Speaker
which was the the end of the season 4-4 draw where there was nothing to play for for everyone. So it kind of got a bit hectic. He scored two goals there and it's like, yeah, just i guess I guess what we want to see is a reaction from the players. And, you know, I won't entirely put that all on their shoulders. Juric is probably going to and do something weird.
00:27:25
Speaker
Maybe it's an opportunity for him to not do something weird. But yeah, just to... just to not be humiliated, which is, I know, a really low bar, but we need to keep it low because at the moment, genuinely, like, I just want to have something to not be horrifically disappointed about at the end of the game.

Southampton's Hopes and Lineup Changes

00:27:43
Speaker
yeah There are a few moments in there as fight and we lost because we just got battered by the best team in the world. That's fine. Like, I'll take that. If we just but get scored against once, down tools, and then it becomes another 9-0 situation and a horror story, that's when my brain, that's when I really get a bit upset. So I'm sorry to anyone that thought I was ever going to give an optimistic answer to that.
00:28:05
Speaker
We need Greg here, don't we? We need Greg. as you just remember he isn't He's out of this one because I don't think there's any way, shape or form, he could have predicted a win. So maybe that's why he's unavailable. He did last time I was on with him, to be fair. He has never predicted a loss and I think he only predicted a draw once and then got halfway through predicting the draw, got annoyed with himself and then changed it back to a win. So, you know...
00:28:30
Speaker
remember that point yeah i remember there being a very weird refereeing decision last time out. I can't remember what it was was. It was either a penalty shout or a red card shout or something like that.
00:28:43
Speaker
And then you genuinely could have got a draw from that game. subject so we have had That's the thing. We have had a couple of, especially in the early Russell Martin days, we did have a couple of... couple of shouts go against us, but I think there was so much like focus on how we've been caught up. And a admittedly, Russell Mott had, I want to say, two or three meetings with Howard Webb on the back of weird decisions that have gone against us. But that kind of, I guess, shielded us from the fact that we were also just bad. like that wasn't going There were a couple of times where maybe we would have got a couple extra points.
00:29:16
Speaker
I don't think that refereeing decisions are why we have nine points the entirety of the season. but I don't, but I think it's contributed to why we are so far behind, because I think we're not squad-wise, and lacking a goal score as well, but we're not squad-wise that far behind Ipswich and Leicester, in my opinion.
00:29:33
Speaker
And there's not that many. I think I'd take two of Ipswich's players and maybe a couple more of Leicester's. But, you know, that didn't help. But no, I can't remember the exact one against Liverpool, to be fair. No, I remember messaging Greg after the game because he was there, obviously.
00:29:49
Speaker
Speaking of which, I've just had him recommend as a friend suggestion on Facebook in my notifications for the first ever time. That's interesting time. Anyway, sorry, that's besides the point. No, I did message him after the game and then we aired his thoughts in a WhatsApp voice message and just completely tore into him. I feel bad now about it, but it was very funny at the time.
00:30:07
Speaker
But, you know, it from what I've seen, Southampton can definitely bring the fight to Liverpool. And who's to say?
00:30:17
Speaker
It's the Premier League. Who's to say? Trying to keep it interesting. Oscar, I'll come to you. What are you what are you trying to... What are you hoping for out of this game? Same question as that. I think similar in a similar vein, just...
00:30:30
Speaker
a performance that we can take something out of and actually build on, which we've been looking for since Juric has come in and probably, can't think of actually many games, even the Ipswich game, we didn't play that well.
00:30:44
Speaker
I would snap your hand off for for a one, maybe a two-gold deficit, to be honest, still losing. I just think at this point it's it's a free hit.
00:30:53
Speaker
go out, show a bit of fight and build on something so that we can at least pick up a couple more points until the end of the season. I think we have to understand the qualities out there. I'd also like to see Juric actually change something rather than just, we've spoken about it before, we've gone from one stubborn manager with a philosophy to another stubborn manager with another philosophy, neither of which work.
00:31:14
Speaker
And if I... I'm concerned, as I said earlier, if we stick to the the same thing that we've been doing, it's going to be a real problem because I think it plays so perfectly into Liverpool's hands.
00:31:26
Speaker
So, you know, maybe a little bit of a change. He said he was going to do it before the last game and he didn't. Maybe he changes it a little bit and we can, you know, have a plucky defeat. We've had a few of them this season and, you know, they were a concern under Martin. Now, i take it.
00:31:42
Speaker
but the But also, you you mentioned a change in team. Erivo started the last match at centre-back, as we mentioned. But Jack Stephens was an unused sub. Would you like to see him back in? Because I think he shows a lot of character. I don't know what his injury situation is, if he's had any yeah recently. There must have been reason for dropping him.
00:32:02
Speaker
Yeah, he's just come back from injury. And before that, he was serving his band for pulling Cucurea's hair. So he's had his moments this year with discipline. and which has been an issue. But you're right, he does wear his heart on his sleeves and he does play like he cares.
00:32:16
Speaker
I think the reason for Eribo playing there is he wants left-sided balance. But actually, Harba Bellis came back in on Chelsea. Yeah, off the bench, yeah.
00:32:26
Speaker
So, and he came back on and he actually looked like he was okay. So maybe we see, and I think Ben Narek actually might be back. I don't know. I think he said he was potentially going to be back. So maybe we won't see a revo there.
00:32:41
Speaker
You also had young Nathan Wood on the bench as well. Yeah, again, a player that we, I think we all agree, we quite like him. He was doing quite well under Martin. He was one of Martin's signings because he was an ex-Swansea player.
00:32:53
Speaker
hasn't seemed to have been in much favour with Juric. We also spoke about about the fact he did this before when he was at Roma playing a... I think it was... it Was it a left wing or a left wing back?
00:33:04
Speaker
Left centre back and dropped Max Hamels. So he obviously has... a bit of a penchant for or something or something that fits in his system reason for doing it. So I don't know with the Uribe thing. For me, it's not even that's not actually even really the issue. It's just this ludicrous man-marking system where they go man for man with players.
00:33:23
Speaker
So we saw Bella Kochap on the halfway line with Neto. we it was Nkunku on the right-hand side with James Bree. and a back three completely split across the middle, leaving it one-on-one.
00:33:36
Speaker
You do that with a rebound against Salah, it's going to be a problem. Yeah. Or any of our forward players, to be fair. Well, exactly. Yeah, take your pick. Not to mention Soboslai playing as that sort of backup striker at times as well.
00:33:51
Speaker
Yeah. But yeah, it it will be... it know it it does seem like the way you put it there, it could just be a matter of how many. And for your sake, like you mentioned, one or two deficit you would take all day.
00:34:08
Speaker
Which is a strange thing to say when you play five at the back. Anyway, we'll get into our predictions. what What do you think the deficit will be? Zach, I'll start with you.
00:34:18
Speaker
I think I said previously anything less than five and they stand by that. So let's go with all one because I feel like we need to do something.
00:34:27
Speaker
We need to have something to talk about. We need to do some sort of attack maybe at some point. Maybe you're caught napping because you're like, you consider it to be so easy and a ball comes into Oduachu and he manages to head in.
00:34:39
Speaker
you know and He gets to leave with at least a slight amount of montage of some of the clips of him playing for Southampton. but yeah That's my unfortunate, sad, best-case scenario. It's 4-1 loss to Liverpool.
00:34:54
Speaker
He's so likeable, isn't he? Right, Oscar. Oscar, you next. I'm probably even a bit bit more pessimistic. I had 4-0 down because I just don't see us scoring.
00:35:06
Speaker
We struggled to score against terrible defenders, let alone against world-class. So I had 4-0 and I think there's some stat where, is it 15 of the last 27 games we've conceded more than three goals?
00:35:20
Speaker
Quite a few of them have been So we've got Brentford, Brighton, Chelsea, chelsea yeah get Let's get the highlight reel out. Let's get the story reel.
00:35:31
Speaker
So let's let's back let's add another 4-0 on there. Again, i would go that's what my head says. I've gone with my heart before. I think I went with my heart 3-2 win against Brighton and we lost 4-0. So I'm going to ignore my heart and just go with the Right, okay. so From my perspective, I mean, I'm looking at this from the opposite perspective to you.
00:35:50
Speaker
I always find these matches the hardest to predict because, you know, you go in thinking, well, we should batter them and then we just never do. i mean, look at what happened against Plymouth. All of the Liverpool fans were saying, oh, we're going to absolutely smash them up and then we lose.
00:36:06
Speaker
I know we had a completely different squad for that one, but the same principle. And I honestly think it will be one of those games where we see this so often on the slot.
00:36:18
Speaker
it i if this It's one of two things. Either we get one or two in the first half, and then we look threatening for the rest of the game and just don't score.
00:36:28
Speaker
That happens so often, but we get over the line. Or we score in like the 50th to 65th minute. That's happened a lot. And then we just defend for the rest of the game.
00:36:39
Speaker
And Southampton look like they could come close. So I think it's one of those situations. And I think it will be the first. I think it will be a 2-0 win. And it will be like, oh, we should have had a lot more.
00:36:52
Speaker
that that happens a lot, especially when we don't have an actual good striker at the moment. and We just rely on our wingers too much. And if Gakpo plays, I don't think he'll be back to his best yet. So I'm going to say 2-0 from a Liverpool perspective. I'm sure you both take that after your pessimistic count. Yeah, 100%.
00:37:12
Speaker
We've been called a banana skin multiple times this season by multiple other teams, and then they end up battering us like 4-5-0. So this is the problem, is that like, previously i'll be like maybe we will be a banana skin and then and then i watch us play for five minutes again i'm like oh yeah championship we're going down and straight back up Well, maybe you will go back up next next season in the championship. We'll end the podcast there on that note.
00:37:38
