Introduction and Welcome

00:00:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome back to the Daily Southampton, part of the Global Sports Podcast Network. My name is Greg Elliott and I'm joined by my wonderful friends today. Zach, how you doing?
00:00:20
Zak
Yeah, not too bad, mate. Hopefully a little bit more positive than I was yesterday because I was pretty miserable. And I'm sorry to anyone that listened and just thought, wow, we have no hope at all. Because, like, I don't know, it's really, really getting to me.
00:00:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
And joined by Oscar. Oscar, how are you doing? Are you feeling positive about tomorrow?
00:00:43
Oscar
I'm not sure positive is the word, but yeah, I've i've had a sort of bit of a breakaway. So haven't thought about Southampton for a while. So yeah, also positively optimistic at the moment, comparatively at least.
00:00:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
well, we we're in that wonderful phase where we've just had the press conference from Ivan Juric.

Flynn Downs' Return

00:01:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
some interesting tidbits to come out of it. Seems that Flynn Downs is back in the mix and they seem to have made up and hugged it out.
00:01:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
So that can only be a good thing, right, Zach?
00:01:15
Zak
Well, where I'm at is that that's the ideal solution, right? The ideal outcome, and it's not an outcome that in my opinion, you see often in the current sort of times. you know You've very got to look at places like Lamina, Wolves, basically refusing to play and then getting sent off to Galatasaray, Rashford and the whole Man United saga.
00:01:37
Zak
So for me to have an amicable outcome for a you know difficult spell for players and manager is nothing but a good thing. like It's nice.
00:01:47
Zak
There's some positive news to come out the cup for a game.
00:01:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
and
00:01:50
Zak
It's all right, Matt.
00:01:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
And Oscar, do you think that that sort of conflict becoming so public now gives the sort of person that Flynn Downs is like a real kick to go on and prove that he is the quality that we thought he was at the start of the season and step up?
00:02:07
Oscar
Yeah, I think it has to, right? I mean, if it would have carried on, I really don't know who it would have benefited. It's not going to benefit him because if he thinks that he's of a Premier League level or whatever the disagreement was, he's not going to prove it if he's sat on the bench or not even playing.
00:02:22
Oscar
So I think it's just the the best outcome for everyone, really, in the grand scheme of things.
00:02:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, absolutely. It'll be interesting to see what sort of a role, if any, he plays in the game or if he'll just make it as far as the bench for now and work his way back from there.
00:02:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
Other team news, Jack Stevens is sort of back, but not in a way that he wants to be rushed. I feel like Juric learning from Ipswich.
00:02:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
What does that mean for our left centre-back,

Defensive Lineup Challenges

00:02:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oscar? Eddie? Any idea what the best decision is so far? Because I'm not sure Juric does.
00:02:59
Oscar
I mean, I think every time we, no, I think every time we sort of think we've got a solution to it, something changes. So I think it's i think we know that Benaric and Bree are the two that he's going to go with.
00:03:11
Oscar
And it's just who that third one is. I don't think Wood necessarily covered himself in glory in the last game. So, you know, unless we see Jair Webo back in there, it makes sense to bring Steven back in, I think.
00:03:20
Zak
but he He seems to think that's an option, right?
00:03:23
Oscar
Yeah.
00:03:24
Zak
said that He said two solid 45-minute performances.
00:03:24
Oscar
Yeah.
00:03:27
Zak
you know What if he puts him in there for a 90? If Down's back in contention, you have Down's and Lugachukwu in defensive midfield.
00:03:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, could work.
00:03:35
Zak
Would it? does that help this i still I find it baffling that we spent on the like we had so many defenders, so many defenders, and now apparently we've just got none.
00:03:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
could work.
00:03:46
Zak
It's so weird. Hey-ho.
00:03:48
Oscar
It was ours when Eribo was brought in as probably an attack attacking a striker slash right mid.
00:03:53
Zak
just Just dropping him further and further back until he's in goal.
00:03:56
Oscar
And he's literally flipped to the opposite position. Yeah, that's madness.
00:04:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
Look, whatever works. if If it's crazy and we win, all of those questions go away, right? So it's sometimes... But i mean, based off of what we've seen the rest of the season, maybe it's going to take something a bit crazy that we all look at and go, what?
00:04:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
But if it works...
00:04:18
Zak
Right, let's look at the crazy things we've done this season, all right? Let's look at the games where we started without strikers, or the games we've also started without strikers, or even the game that Russell Martin fiddled with to try and go four at the back with putting Sulemane on, where we were four nil down in 25 minutes.
00:04:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you.
00:04:34
Zak
It's... It's always risky, but like again, as we keep also talking about, at this point, what is there to lose? like If they mess about with stuff and then eventually find a winning formula, stick with it. But also, the the the sort of range of opposition we're coming up against.
00:04:48
Zak
don't don't know. it's some Every single team sheet, I think, in the last sort of couple of months, most of us have gone... okay, sort of, at least at some point, or even if it's just one player.
00:04:58
Oscar
Mm-hmm.
00:05:02
Zak
And obviously, it's only really worked out for one game. so it will be what it will be. i think it's I think that it's difficult to try and essentially, you know, I don't think that he knows what his best 11 is because I don't think there is currently a best 11.
00:05:18
Zak
And I think that we'll continue to see changes and tweaks probably right up until

Current Form and Relegation Concerns

00:05:21
Zak
the end of the season at this point.
00:05:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:05:42
Oscar
Yeah, I think for sure. I think our depth is probably more than adequate for the championship. And I think let me go when we go back down, I think it's a when, not an if now. I think it has been for a while. But I think all of a sudden we're in we're in a pretty good position for the championship. And it's and another one of those difficult things where we're sort of stuck in limbo between because we've got a squad that should be strong in the championship but just not enough that that can hack it at this level how they address that i'm not too sure because the likelihood is that few that are probably ready which i think you can count on one hand what's the likelihood of them actually being here next season in there then
00:06:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. Oscar, we haven't heard much of your reflection this week on on the Bournemouth game. Will Smallbone got in the starting line-up last week. Do you think he's done enough to stay in there this week, or is that going to instantly change about, do you think?
00:06:40
Oscar
I still think for me, I don't think he's the answer if you're going to play midfield two. I think he's too lightweight and he's he's got to be in with the three if you're going to do it.
00:06:50
Oscar
And it looks more like Juric favours there, the 3-4-3. So if it were me, I personally wouldn't. I think you need, I think a good shot is a 100% must. You have to have him in there.
00:07:03
Oscar
And then maybe you can carry a small bone but for me I would go a good ship when downs but I just think he he offers something but he's another one that's probably in that bracket where yes he's good enough to play in the championship is he good enough to have does he have the quality to play in the Premier League does he have the athleticism but i just I don't know necessarily know we spoke about I think we spoke about in the past him being a bit of a jack of all trades he's good at lots of things but what what does he bring to the table that's That's where I'd be with it.
00:07:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I mean, for me, the midfield was a definite point of concern last week because, you know, you can can say about the shape or lack thereof at the back with this back five, but but there was no time for them to deal with anything because we were just getting... There was nothing in front of them.
00:07:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
They were just getting absolutely run all over the park and it was... Yeah, it was concerning for sure.
00:07:58
Oscar
i think
00:08:01
Oscar
I think it depends on who we're playing against as well. If we're likely to be playing against a team that we're can have more possession, which I don't think there's many, or more control, then maybe you go with a small bone. But if not, then I think you're more going with someone that can break it up, if that makes sense.
00:08:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
It certainly does. Okay. So, uh, after we come back from the break, we're going to, uh, dive into some predicted 11s and see if we can work out what's going on in Evanderich's head.

Lineup Predictions vs Brighton

00:08:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
First, a message from our partners, Abayneek.
00:09:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
Okay, so we are back and we're going to jump straight in. Zach, I'm going to come over to you. What back five do you, or back four, do you think we'll see tomorrow against Brighton?
00:09:25
Zak
Sogawara, Carl Walker-Peters, Bree, Bednarak.
00:09:30
Zak
but Let's roll the dice. a Rebo? Sure, why not? A Rebo. Apparently, he is now a central defender.
00:09:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
No Wellington?
00:09:39
Zak
but Because apparently...
00:09:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
Wellington gets left out in your pick?
00:09:42
Zak
i like the idea of him coming on a bit later. And I know that Sogawara is hungry. a little bit. He's had an interview or two. And I think that Wellington has come in after not playing for a while.
00:09:58
Zak
Injury has kind of come off after sort of 45 minutes a couple of times. So I'm like, just bring him on later if you want that kind of dynamic option. Again, they stuff off the bench, it would be slightly more exciting.
00:10:09
Zak
Plus, I think that Kyle Walker-Peters, despite being our best right back, is also sometimes still our best left back. Yeah. Just got to worry about it. Just something different. If we're rolling the dice on everything, we're rolling the dice on everything...
00:10:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:10:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
What about you, Oscar? How do you see see the back five lining up?
00:10:25
Oscar
yeah i'd be i'd be pretty similar again i think we spoke about i think you know obviously ramsdale is going to be a dead site you'd like to think you'd like to hope and then i agree but narek would Is there an argument to say? And, you know, I don't, I haven't been watching it too closely recently anyway, but but could you maybe give Sigawar on the right and Wellington on the left to go and give Walker-Peters a bit of a rest or maybe push him a bit higher?
00:10:51
Oscar
Is that something we could possibly look at? I'm not sure, but I agree. I'd probably, if Downs can slot into that centre midfield, then why not give Arriba a rebo go there? I don't think we'll see Belicot chat, put it that way.
00:11:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah
00:11:02
Zak
ah ah still I still find it really exciting that people put put him in their best 11s, despite the fact that he's played like once this season against Cardiff, where we shipped like three goals.
00:11:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
But Zach, he's a full German international for that one 10-minute appearance he had.
00:11:16
Zak
No, no, no. He had two games in Euro 20-something. 2020. Was it the 2021 and 2021? think... twenty twenty twenty was it the twenty twenty wat it twenty twenty onet ah think Again, like I feel like we we always hammer this up point home.
00:11:32
Zak
Conspiracy theories aside, which I think we might have discussed without you, Oscar, that Greg has heard a conspiracy theory that apparently we're not playing him due to some weird contract stuff.
00:11:44
Zak
like They're either going to play him or not.
00:11:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
if he makes his 25th appearance, we owe him a bonus or some nonsense.
00:11:48
Zak
Which, again, we would have just sold him in any of the times that any club came in if that was the case. but Because that would have just made more logical sense.
00:11:56
Oscar
Yeah, I think that's probably well-fetched.
00:11:57
Zak
If it is as simple as that the only place that he's going to be played is where Bree's playing and Juric prefers Bree, then yeah, I don't see him making you know a change.
00:12:08
Zak
Bree gets injured. I think it's a different story. But that left-hand side seems to be... in the back three, the problem that Juric has and has tried Wood there. And I think, yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if he plays at Rebo, but I don't think we'll Balakotcha unless Bree goes out.
00:12:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
I tend to agree. I think maybe what Oscar said was right about seeing Wellington and Yuki and maybe seeing Walker Peter pushed up slightly further to to that right wing role where we've been bit lacking.

Midfield Strategy Concerns

00:12:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
Suda Mano seems to prefer the left. so
00:12:43
Oscar
I think again he's he's been quite creative when he's played Walker-Peters so again why not give it a go, it's a different option.
00:12:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Absolutely. What about the middle of the park? Do you see Flynn Downs coming straight back in?
00:12:53
Oscar
I'm not sure that I do, I think as much as I don't necessarily think he should, I think he probably will stick with Smallbone and Oguchukwu but I would prefer to see Downs in there. But yeah I think those two or or i mean then you've got the question about mattie fernandez as well so maybe could you see a good trip with fernandez and then you've got onuachi walker peters and sulaimana in front of him maybe that's a two that works
00:13:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
we've sort seen Matty Fernandez pushed more forward almost into the front three or into like that sort of false nine role maybe we'll see that what about Grombeck think maybe gets an appearance it was kind of strange that he was left out last week Zach think much of that
00:13:25
Oscar
yeah
00:13:38
Zak
I didn't think much of it. Again, I still think we're wait doing things in a weird way. I think he's trying to put individual plans in place for each team without really sticking to a rigid philosophy.
00:13:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you.
00:13:51
Zak
And there's lots of genuine Honestly, genuinely, it's a struggle because this weve we've started to do, like you know at least at least under Russell Bide, what we'd have these conversations, it was significantly easier.
00:14:01
Zak
It would just be personnel swapping it out. But at the moment, it does sort of seem that we will come up with sort of an 11 like this. and that that would be that. But I feel bad for the guy considering if he came in to get first team minutes and he's now had a start and a bit of an appearance and it is now just going to be sort of bench warming for the rest of the season in a team that's going to go down the worst team in Premier League history unless we get another win or a draw.
00:14:25
Zak
It's a bit bizarre, in it, really?
00:14:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, it is strange. Did you see any particular reason, Oscar, that you might have seen him drop to the bench or you think it was just for the sake of trying to squeeze everyone in?
00:14:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, do you see any reason, Oscar, that Grombeck was left out? Anything that maybe I missed?
00:14:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, it's a really strange one. Okay. And moving into the front line, the front three that he seems to prefer seems to be a combination of Ohanachu, Fernandez and Sulemana.
00:15:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
We talked a bit, Zach, about Cameron Archer maybe be getting more of a shot. Do you see it changing or do you think we're going to stick with the same?
00:15:12
Zak
say one of those if it's not broke don't fix it sort of consider situations whilst we might consider it to not be to not be like the most tactically astute thing to do clearly he's kind of happy with that front line and again I think that
00:15:29
Zak
the only The only reason I could see him swapping people out is literally at this point for fatigue or injuries, if I'm totally honest, rather than anything to, you know, the midfield and the defence is partly the same sort of issue, right?
00:15:40
Zak
It's that if he's messing around with Joe Aribo, he's moving Joe Aribo back or alternatively having better, stronger options off of the bench.
00:15:48
Zak
So yeah, I don't really see anything, foresee anything more exciting.
00:15:51
Zak
I think Torpoor gets a start. I think as much as we'd like to see it, Greg, like the problem is, is that
00:15:58
Zak
realistically, what the front three that you'd want to see is Torpo, Archer and Solomano, right?
00:16:03
Zak
But how do you make that work in terms of positioning for them that actually makes sense for all of those players? unless Unless we just do what we do when we're off the ball, on the ball anyway, which is give up all hope of a formation and just make the three of them man-mark each other so whenever one of them gets the ball, they can just pass it between the three them.
00:16:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
You end up in what like and like a sort of rugby style huddle where you sort of guard your way through it.
00:16:23
Zak
Who knows?
00:16:28
Zak
Yeah, exactly.
00:16:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
you got the blood of
00:16:29
Zak
Apparently we need
00:16:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
but We called for something crazy. Maybe that'll work. Who knows? about

Changes in the Front Three

00:16:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
the front three? Maybe even Tyler Diblin coming into the mix? Or is at this point he more effective for us off the bench because he is a glimmer of hope off the bench and not the rest of the team?
00:16:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, it'll definitely be interesting to see what happens when the team sheet comes out. At this point, I don't think there's much that can be put on the team sheet that will strike me as a surprise.
00:17:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
So we will see. Okay, when we come back, we're going go through some score predictions and how we see the game playing out. But first, a message from our partners at Zencaster.

00:17:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
Okay, so we are back.
00:17:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oscar, as the the one of us who we didn't hear from yesterday,
00:17:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
How do you see the game going tomorrow?
00:17:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's it. I'm there for it. Absolutely. That's a lot of goals. I don't know.

Match Outcome Predictions

00:17:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
i don't know if I'm feeling that, Oscar. Zach, are you feeling more optimistic today? Are you seeing an outcome that's positive in our favour?
00:18:05
Zak
I'm feeling more optimistic as in looking forward to watching watching the game a little bit more than I was yesterday. still think we're going to lose three one like i'm I'm really sorry, but and like i I know that when we were talking to Joe from Brighton yesterday, it was funny because he was talking about the sort of like, oh, he's like, oh, I don't want to underestimate too many teams because like we did that Forest and they batted us 7-0. And I'm just like, mate, I don't think we've scored more than three goals in a game this season.
00:18:29
Zak
And apart from that one game that was a you know cup game against Cardiff, other than that, we're struck we we haven't scored more than two.
00:18:35
Zak
Joe Eribo is our stopt top goal scorer with three.
00:18:39
Zak
So, yeah, just I don't see Brighton being that defensively leaky.
00:18:44
Zak
I'm still where I'm at. I still think that it would be lovely to see Torpoor get goal at St Mary's and that would be the moment we look forward to in an otherwise normal route for a team that realistically at this stage in the season with where we both are in the respective positions in the table, it should be a relatively straightforward win for them, especially as they're a team that keep building from strength to strength.
00:19:06
Zak
But, you know, give it a few years and they'll probably end up in the same position that as us or at least maybe they won't end up getting abysmally mismanaged so they won't but they can't as far as I'm concerned you can't sell your best players every year and it'd be sustainable but they seem to be doing all right with it at least
00:19:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
Okay. Well, um look I'm still feeling optimistic. I'm still feeling a one nil win. If anything, I'm feeling it more. I don't know if it's going to be a, a tall pool winner with absolute scenes, uh, or Sulemana with a goal.
00:19:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
So you've got to buy a shirt, Zach, uh, Look, I would take a scrappy own goal that bounces in off the keeper's face, frankly. i think we're going to score.
00:19:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
i think we're going to maintain our mentality. I think we're going to hold on to the lead and not concede. We're going to keep a rare clean sheet and we're just going to grind out that result that takes us to not be the worst team in Premier League history.
00:20:06
Zak
Okay, buddy. And so there's there's these new things called bacon wings, Greg. It's because pigs have started flying now.
00:20:17
Zak
You can get a deep fried in most sports outlets. Really good, Blake. Really, really good.
00:20:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
but
00:20:25
Zak
Look, you need to have this level of delusion, right?
00:20:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
but we'll see. We will see on Monday who comes out. Right. And I'm telling you now, I'm feeling this one in my gut. Uh, I think, I think we're going to do it.
00:20:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's going to be a, a good day out at St. Mary's. One of very few, uh, this season, it has to be said, but I'm going a great time. We're going to win.
00:20:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
And that's, uh, then the pressure's off for the rest of the season. I don't know, what do we aim for once we're not the worst team in Premier League history anymore? What's the next target?

Post-Relegation Strategies

00:21:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
There we go.
00:21:01
Zak
maintaining Maintaining the fitness of as many of our players as possible so we can go into the summer without injuries. that that's That's where I'm at.
00:21:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
we
00:21:10
Zak
Alternatively, playing all of the fringe players that are probably going to go, that we could maybe maybe get like a million quid extra if they play like a half-decent game.
00:21:23
Zak
Other than that,

cheaper points at the Dell, I guess. The pub, by the way, not the stadium, alas. don't know.
00:21:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:21:33
Zak
It just it seems like such a... do you remember when we were joking that this was like a... Oh, at least we're going to... This was like a thing we talked at the beginning season. when we were like towards the first couple of weeks after the season, we were like, oh, imagine if we end up the worst Premier League team in history. We'll probably beat Derby's point record for sure though. And now we're sat here like, yeah, but seriously, come on. lucky just Just again, like I would also be happy for us to just start grinding out some draws or just to defensively shore up.
00:22:05
Zak
Like if we get past that 12... 12 i would and and we know we're going down so when it's been confirmed we're going down at that point what i'd really like to see is i guess a slightly more defensive mentality so that we can start to maybe get some clean sheets and start to like build up what it's like to not leak goals because even when we're the championship we still need goals and obviously that's now significantly larger problem like it was
00:22:33
Zak
It was put under a microscope on it as soon as we came back up. And if it's a thing we need to kind of try to train out of the team, but alas, that is not my job. It's just something I get sad about.

Global Sports Podcast Network
Okay, well, as we head towards the end of our time, have you got any any final thoughts, Oscar? Anything lot to close on for tomorrow?

Global Sports Podcast Network
You guys aren't just feeling the positive vibes. Look. Mathematically, we can still finish third.

Global Sports Podcast Network
Anything can happen.
00:23:04
Zak
it's It's like...

Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:23:07
Zak
Sometimes, mate, like sometimes I'm really with you and i love I love this level. But other times it's like, it feels like I'm talking to a conspiracy theorist. It's like, I know there are 9,999 studies that say this, but I found this one study that says this.
00:23:22
Zak
So that means that it's possible. And I'm like, yeah, arguably anything's possible. It's like, well, you know, physics is there to be broken. I'm like, no, that's not how physics works. But at the same time, i feel like it's nice to not have us all just be missionaries.
00:23:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm not saying that we're staying up. I'm just saying maybe we finished 19th and not 20th. Yeah.
00:23:41
Zak
There we go. i can get behind that.
00:23:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, yeah
00:23:44
