Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome to the Daily Southampton part of the Global Sports Podcast Network. My name is Greg Elliott and once again joined by a full team today. Oscar, how you doing?
00:00:19
Oscar
Yeah, well, good, thank you.
00:00:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, Zach, how you doing, mate?
00:00:22
Zak
Not in life mate.
00:00:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
Good. We are here to preview our f FA Cup match tomorrow against Burnley.
00:00:29
Oscar
I'm not sure, to be fair, I think he's going to want to be desperate to build on our second win of the season.
00:00:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
It should be a nice straightforward game, right? Championship opponents should be competitive. Oscar how do you see it playing out? You think we're gonna make many changes?
00:00:40
Oscar
i'm not sure to be fair i think he's going to want to be desperate to build on only our second win of the season only win of the year, so I'd imagine he'd want to build on it and I wouldn't ah for i wouldn imagine there would be wholesale changes, but I think it's a good opportunity to maybe see what some ah some others could offer.
00:00:59
Oscar
Will we finally see Bella Koch app? Might be a nice one to see, especially given that we've got quite a few setbacks out of injuries at the minute.
00:01:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
I feel like we've said that every Cup game since the start of the season and that is yet to come to fruition.
00:01:13
Zak
No, we saw it we saw of in the Cardiff game, if you remember rightly.
00:01:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh yeah, for what, about 15 minutes? It wasn't a lengthy appearance, was it?
00:01:21
Zak
la
00:01:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
What about you Zach? You think we'll go with four guns blazing or what are we going to be
00:01:29
Zak
I'll call it a bit obscure in the fact that we need to kind of keep momentum, whether or not that means that some other people get a go, who knows, because but like if you're treating it how they should treat it, which is it's a game in between games. It's not like we've jammed it in on a Tuesday and are playing again on a Thursday, right? I'm pretty sure how long's the next game, the gap afterwards. I'm relatively sure it was.
00:01:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
We're home to Bournemouth on Saturday after we've got a whole week.
00:01:56
Zak
Yeah, so so youre like if you're ah ah where I'm at is don't change a winning formula. I would play exactly the same way that they did. the other week, because, you know, why would you want to rock the boat a little bit? It might be an opportunity, as you said, to start some people and change some stuff, but, like, what's the point at this rate? Like, we're gonna if we're going to do that, you wait until it's we're actually properly relegated, and and then you mess with stuff when we know that it's not going to matter, when there's still an outward side chance, you know, we should actually...
00:02:28
Zak
Obviously, one of the big differences is that the bench will probably be slightly different now that Armstrong's out on loan, so that's a bit of a wedge one still.
00:02:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. Do you think it's more of a good opportunity as well for a couple of new signings like Grumbach and Wellington? It's another championship opponent, I'd say another, ah maybe a bit premeditatively, but to sort of ease their footing before some of the tougher Premier League games. Is it important that they stay in the picture just to build up that expectation?
00:03:00
Oscar
I think so. I think think it's important for them to sort of get an idea of how how he wants to play and just to start to build those connections in the team. So for me, it would make sense to give them both as much time as possible. Obviously, you've got to be a bit cautious with Wellington given that he's just come back from a fairly long stint out. its again, it's not as if we haven't got cover in those areas, but I think i think you're right. Start strong, get yourself into a good position. I'm certainly going to be tough opposition. They're doing pretty well in the championship as it is. I know we know what sort of game we're probably anticipating from them and what sort of style they're going to play. But maybe adding a couple of their additions in January have probably bolstered them a little bit. So I don't think it's going to be i think it's going to be a really competitive game to be fair.
00:03:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
It feels like it should be right back at that level that we're expecting to be at. Burnley full of nil-nil draws pretty consistently. Is that a concern that we're going to struggle to break them down? Or does that actually think now that Paul's popped off that that's him on on an unstoppable binge now?
00:04:08
Zak
i'd love I'd love that to be the case. Are we better at scoring than most championship sides, is the real question. I would say no, but then when we have come up against championship opposition so far this season, if we take it surely it's like surely stats based on Cardiff, we scored five against. It didn't feel like it was going to be a five goal game at the start. Swansea did well at as well. so Can we put something past Burnley who are lining up apparently boring and defensively? Maybe. Has Paul now started scoring? Yes. Are they beautiful goals? No.
00:04:47
Zak
do I think that we have more of an opportunity in this game to do stuff than some of the other games we've played? Well, yeah, I still wasn't convinced by what everyone said, including myself, about how we should win against Ipswich, or it is one of our best opportunities to win. Because you know that other kind of opposition we're going to be coming up against in the future, and probably the kind of opposition that are on our level now, and we did, we we beat them. So you know we should go into that.
00:05:17
Zak
with not the expectation, but I think we should go back into the game with the confidence that we could probably beat Burnley. And I don't know, maybe a positive cut problem isn't the worst thing in the world after what's happened so far this season. That has not been a huge amount to scream about or enjoy. Again, the small wins, the small moments. But other than that, it's been pretty dire. So if we get a win, it can only be a good thing. That's kind of where I'm at.
00:05:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
Is winning the cup and finishing on 12 points in 20th place a success?
00:05:51
Zak
nice No.
00:05:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
Fair enough.
00:05:54
Zak
No.
00:05:54
Oscar
I'll take it to be fair.
00:05:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. hey That annual trip to Wembley I'm scared of getting the kids expectations up for. It's possible. It's not that far away.
00:06:02
Zak
To be clear, I take it the answer to your question of is it considered success?
00:06:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:06:07
Zak
A success? No.
00:06:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah i guess more pointedly would it at this point of the season would it be considered so i guess only getting three more points out of our remaining games would be pretty devastating
00:06:21
Zak
we we would Again, it's beat beating not being the worst Premier League team in history at this this at this rate is a success, right? This is like the objective in Football Manager where it comes to like fight relegation bravely.
00:06:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
and
00:06:37
Zak
That's that's basically it, right? ah We haven't done that so far is ah is it' entirely in my head. about beating that points record. It would be lovely to win a cup. i just dont I just don't think I can have that level of delusion, mate. That's all it is.
00:06:54
Oscar
You still get a European place, right?
00:06:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah,
00:06:56
Oscar
If you win the cup.
00:06:58
Zak
is it Is it still Europa or is it conference now?
00:07:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah I think it's still Europa. I think it's still interested in qualifying.
00:07:04
Zak
God, that would be wild, us having European nights and then going away to Sheffield Wednesday a couple of days later.
00:07:05
Oscar
you That would be funny.
00:07:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
God, that schedule of congestion would be horrible.
00:07:11
Oscar
If we managed to get in the Europa League and...
00:07:15
Oscar
Oh, it wouldn't be.
00:07:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
Championship at Europa League would be like...
00:07:20
Oscar
If we were to get in that and Bournemouth being the conference league, that would be quite entertaining as well.
00:07:23
Zak
That would be so funny.
00:07:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
and
00:07:24
Zak
Oh my lord, that would really spark a rivalry. And yeah, though you're you're right, Greg. yeah I imagine it's how it feels to be like a Celtic fan, where like you completely dominate your domestic league and then like you come up against like a third-tier Romanian side in the run-up to the Champions League and get beaten like 4-0. That's the only allegory I can imagine it would be like if we got to Europa League. No offence to Celtic fans, i actually. They've been the equivalent of our feeder team for many years.
00:07:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Crazy. all right Well, we're going to move on to predicted lineups after the break. But first, a message from our partners at Zencaster. Global Sports Podcast Network
Okay, so before we came on air, Zach, you were talking about the last time we played Burnley and that there were not a lot of players left in either squad from from that meeting to take into account. So how do you see it starting off tomorrow?
00:08:49
Zak
there's There's some of your mainstays, I think the the big question mark, for which probably for all of us, and we were recording this before the process, so we don't really know if some of the injury news from last weekend isn't as bad as we thought it was, but it's going to be the defence, right? like I know that he didn't want to play a humble bellicott chap because he thinks that, yeah I think it was like, oh, no, he's better out on the right, but Breezy was doing fine.
00:09:16
Zak
But that meant that we did play a tired Joe Aribo in centre-back. And I don't think that that's OK to start with. So like, who else is there?
00:09:27
Zak
Unless he does something really left field and pulls out one of the under 21s, which would really, really, in my opinion, cement that his career is over. Because he's now, I don't know, a bar a couple of places with the their transfer windows still open.
00:09:40
Zak
Like, he's staying put now, right? So I guess at this point,
00:09:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:09:45
Zak
He can play play he can't. he can' but yeah
00:09:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm seeing come out of the press conference that both Stevens and Harwood Bennett are confirmed, not available for this weekend. so
00:09:55
Zak
so so yeah like Unless Woods come back, that's the only person I could see coming in, but I think he was also out kind of long-term. Of all the positions that we had,
00:10:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
It does say Nathan Wood is back so maybe we see him flying instead.
00:10:06
Zak
Okay, so then, yeah, I imagine it would be, I mean, actually it would be Wood in his place then with Brie and, yeah, Bednarek. It was kind of funny that centre-back was really a position that I didn't think we would have trouble with, ah ah considering we seemed to sign so many, like, centre-backs, and shout-out to Ronnie Edwards, who is winning over every single QPR fan, who, I don't know, maybe would have fit in better here, seemed like a really strange sign for us to supposedly bring someone in for sort of the future, once again, quote-unquote.
00:10:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:10:34
Zak
not actually really play him other than in one comp competition.
00:10:37
Zak
I don't think he had the best game but so far like he's another one of those ones like Shay Charles where we've led him to probably what is going to be an opposition team next year and he's having a really good time with his football and it'll be interesting to see what happens again but yeah that's the only big question mark for me but I kind of feel like if Wood's back it will be Wood in place of you know just just because of the trust shown so far. But yeah, the only three players from our team that are still technically here from the last time we played Burnley, if in case people were curious, is Jan Bednarek, Kyle Walker-Peters, and Adam Armstrong, who technically isn't here, but is still a Southampton player, obviously, on the confirmed now to be on loan to West Brom. And on the other side, you had characters such as Maxwell Cornay, who I've never heard of that guy, Charlie Taylor,
00:11:29
Zak
Another guy that didn't get hit his championship move. so yeah It's a stranger, and obviously J-Rod, sorry, never never forget J-Rod. but it It kind of shows you how long it's been since we've played as well, because the last time we played them was like 2022, which feels almost like a lifetime ago at this point.
00:11:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
What about you Oscar, at the back do you see wood over Bellacott Trap or do you think this might actually be the time we see Bellacott Trap step in?
00:11:49
Zak
they
00:11:56
Oscar
No I think so because because he said already about about he sees bellicott chappas more over a central centre back or a right-sided centre back he seems to he seems to like Bre being there so that's the only way I could see him being in but if he's putting a Rebo at left centre back ahead of ahead of him he obviously doesn't see him there maybe he wants a left-sided player there or someone that's competent on their left foot I don't know if bellicott chap is or isn't I can't remember actually the last time I saw him play to be honest. so so but But Woods played there a few times this season already on the left side so he must be seen as competent enough to do a job there so that if he's fit enough that's that makes sense to me.
00:12:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I think, I think it makes sense. And I feel like if I was better caught up, I'd be upset that that pecking order was so firmly set, but it does feel like the way it's going to go. I think it's coming out and saying that he wants to play the strongest level. We haven't got a game for another week, so why wouldn't he? So be interesting. Do you think further up the pitch, we see Tyler Diblin back in the mix?
00:12:58
Oscar
I think you'd like to see him. ah It's one of those where it depends on how how fresh he is back from his injury or how he's doing after that. I mean, he was, I believe, about to come on last week, wasn't he, before?
00:13:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, yeah, he was.
00:13:11
Oscar
So he must be fit enough to at least play a part in that at last week. So you'd like to think he would be, and it would be a good opportunity for him to go out to get to get some minutes in the tank.
00:13:21
Oscar
So, yeah, I'd like to see that.
00:13:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
And do you think we stick midfield wise, Zach, with this sort of trio of Grombeck Fernandez and Arribo? to see him mix it up.
00:13:35
Zak
Yeah, I can't really see why you'd want to again like why we'd want to change much from a game that we won the other day, and regardless of whether or not the you know the second goal goal was scored later on. And there was a lot of that game that I had a problem with. I'm not going to lie. But I don't think that was due to personnel choices and positioning i think it's more to do with classic saint stuff and and classic martin ball hangover right and i think that the more you play the sort of new signings you haven't been quote unquote tainted by that style of football uh the more we're going to start to gel into a better position so yeah i kind of i don't really see why we would want to change things up massively don't know if dibbling would start again just because if they can rest him and give him a bit of
00:14:22
Zak
he's going to be vital if we do want to stay up is where I'm at. And although I know that we want to play the strongest sort of 11, I feel like he is one of our strongest 11, but we also have maybe 13 players now that are kind of strong. It's it's really nice to say that I feel like we actually have a bit of squad depth. Not a lot, to be clear. I'm not saying that like, you know, there's a couple of games where you bring people often, but I think me and Greg have discussed before you joined us, we used to talk about how important it was that we had some sort of like impact players. And I think that dibbling and like Solomana, you saw the impact they had when they came on. and That was an impact. And starting them sometimes means that their tank runs out. And when you swap out sort of like a Solomana for a Ryan Fraser, it's a bit more upsetting. So that's that's like, i I wouldn't really be upset to see any of the the players that have played in the last couple of games b be upfront.
00:15:20
Zak
But like I'm also very, very worried about us risking further injuries considering we already have a so seeming a slightly brewing injury crisis at the centre back right now because i'm I'm also worried that although wood might be fit enough, I don't know how much I trust our physio department to decide if someone is fit enough anymore after Steven's managed all of 10 minutes last week. So, swings and roundabouts.
00:15:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't know if you can place that on the physio department though or on his clear willingness to force his way back into the team.
00:15:49
Zak
so it's ah ah It's a bit of both, right? like You can hide stuff if you want to hide stuff. I don't know if there's really ways around that. It's like anything in life. So, yeah, my bad. Not specifically the physio department.
00:16:01
Zak
It's just...
00:16:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
We can't be slandering the busiest medical team in the whole of the Premier League, let's be honest.
00:16:06
Zak
What you mean? They're they're rebuilding Ross Stewart tendon by tendon at this point. like but
00:16:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
Okay. Yeah, I think, I think you're right. I agree. Uh, I don't think we'll see many changes. Maybe we'll see Sulamana from the start instead of off the bench is the only change I maybe see coming into play, but I think if it ain't broke, don't fix it. And but we've struggled enough to find a winning formula this season. So I don't see it changing too far from that, uh, in an effort to try and keep some semblance of, uh,
00:16:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
of momentum going. Okay, so after the break, we'll come back and get some score predictions and see how we think it's going to play out. But first a message from our partners at the Global Sports Podcast Network.
00:16:58
Zak

Global Sports Podcast Network
OK, Oscar, I'm going to throw you under the bus today. You can go first. I see it playing out.
00:17:22
Oscar
Yeah, um I think Burnley fans can get excited because I think there are going to be a couple of goals. So I think I'm going to go 2-1 Southampton. I think we're we're at home. We've got, I think they've got a little bit more about them with the signings that they've made. So I don't think we'll keep a clean sheet and let's burn a snapshot. We're particularly good at it anyway. and But I think we should have enough to win the game. So I'm going to go 2-1.
00:17:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
Who'd you see scoring for us?
00:17:49
Oscar
Ooh, I reckon Toolpool. Let's get another one. And Suleimana, I think, is going to finally get his...
00:18:01
Oscar
Does it count your bet if it's in the cup?
00:18:04
Zak
no specifically made sure it is a league game by design
00:18:05
Oscar
Oh.
00:18:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh.
00:18:11
Oscar
Yeah, fair enough.
00:18:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
that reeks of a through Lamada hat trick coming in then, doesn't it really?
00:18:12
Oscar
Yeah, you'd like to think... Yeah. You'd like to think Silamano, in his new found vein of confidence, would with this would be ah an opposition that he would want to want to come up against more than the Premier League players he's been playing. So, yeah, 2-1.
00:18:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
Nice. Loving the optimism. Zach, what are you thinking?
00:18:32
Zak
I was thinking exactly the same, and I almost had exactly the same goal scorers, but i instead of Solomana, I'd say Grommak. I reckon, you know, what better way to kind of start your sort of, probably, of going into a Premier League career, kind of,
00:18:47
Zak
silence some of the doubters like myself, which is like, hey, why are you leaving a bottom of the league French club to come to a bottom of the league English club? And oh, OK, it's just for game time. I'd like to see them get a goal. But obviously, the other goal coming from tour pool needs to happen at St Mary's. And it's not going anywhere until at least summer now. So we need to start seeing these goals. We need to start, you know, because I think that could genuinely be the thing that turns St Mary's into a a more of a powerhouse. So, you know, you felt quite a bad front.
00:19:17
Zak
not criticising the atmosphere at Saveris, but it can turn toxic quite quick, which is, ah ah again, understandable. I get why, like I have also been there and been participating in the part of why it turns toxic. But I just, the absolute love and adoration for Toolpool, for me, means that if he gets a goal at Saveris, regardless of what competition it's in,
00:19:40
Zak
everyone there is going to go crazy, could even result in a third, but I reckon it'll be the second goal. And yeah, I can't see us keeping a clean sheet, especially if Wood's been out for a while and it's not the level of communication that there is between sort of Yann and Taylor Harbour-Bellis, or I'll be completely wrong and it'll be too nil to us and we will keep a clean sheet because maybe they'll all be able to hold their heads a little bit better. But but ah ah yeah, again,
00:20:08
Zak
Burnley are going to be harder than I think but we expect them to be, um um like I thought with Ipswich, because there weren't any opportunities that Ipswich had to put the game to bed. They just didn't have the finishing at the end, which was surprising, considering how much we all like talked about in the lap.
00:20:25
Oscar
I don't know if you watched Burnley the other night but I saw some of the highlights and some of their finishing was interesting to say the least.
00:20:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I did notice that their goal was, in fact, an own goal and didn't actually come from a Bernie player, so...
00:20:38
Zak
so so So what we're actually saying, Greg, is it's going to be a nil nil, except actually it'll end up one all due to two own goals.
00:20:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
it Yeah. So, well, let's get the... I wanted to say Neil-Neil because I think it's funny.
00:20:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
Uh, when there's a joke, it's gotta be taken. But, uh, actually I'm just, of I'm in that Friday feeling. I'm in that optimistic spirit. Uh, we're back in the point of the cycle. It's been no cycle this week. It's just been like the steady build of optimism off the back of a win, which is such a, such a dangerous position to come into the weekend as, but I just think we're going to, uh, smash them. I think we're going to absolutely dominate. And I think three nil.
00:21:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
Uh, is, I think we're going to keep a clean sheet. I think we're going to score plenty of goals. We might even have a couple in the first half and then just sneak accidentally score one in the second half or something.
00:21:31
Zak
Who scored all these goals, mate?
00:21:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
Uh, I think tool pool will get a goal. I think my Fernandez will get a goal, uh, and cup specialist James Briel probably spoon one from outside the area.
00:21:40
Zak
Finally.
00:21:44
Zak
I forget, again, such a good such a good player for what we paid for him and how versatile across managers he's been.
00:21:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's gotta be the way.
00:21:57
Zak
I feel really bad for that man as in like when he originally joined being like, oh, you came to join a probably league team to get probably league football, got relegated to the team that you did get promoted and all that kind of sucks.

Zak
But, you know, I think I think he's done such a number for us and I can't help but look back at that Cardiff goal and be like, oh, man, even when he leaves, that's what I remember.

Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah yeah yes so that's that's the optimism i'm feeling i'm feeling a big win clean sheet uh let's hope ah ah to
00:22:18
Zak
Like Kuka Martina, but, you know, slightly less than at the halfway line.
00:22:32
Oscar
I think it's an opportunity to show what what we should be looking at for next season, right? if and We've played a few championship teams this year already, but but and also for Jurec, it's an opportunity for him to show, because he's still on trial for next season, really, because I'm fairly sure if things don't go well, most of the fan base won't.
00:22:50
Oscar
Well, there's another other managers out there that a lot of the fan base have already suggested they'd be quite interested in. The club have already expressed an interest in. So I think he's got to, for his own sake, put a bit of a stamp on it as well and show that his teams can perform against teams like this too.

Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, and I think it's really important to keep that momentum building going into, we've got, I think, two, three and four at home in the next couple of games. And there are some tough games. I think we've got Bournemouth and Brighton coming up, which could not, they could really kill that momentum dead. So I think it's important to build upon it whilst we can and prepare ourselves to go hard into those battles.
00:23:35
Zak
or or we completely derail Brighton's season. Sorry, not Brighton's ball of season.
00:23:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:23:44
Zak
Brighton are already on a pretty bad run of their own and somehow take six points for those games.
00:23:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
wow
00:23:49
Zak
And then not only scraped by the record, but also for an extra sort of, you know, extra three point cushion.
00:23:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
But we if we come out of those games with six points, there's going to be some real talk about whether we're actually getting relegated or not.
00:23:58
Zak
So then, you know,
00:24:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
But I'm glad that my hopeless delusional optimism is catching. So anyway.
00:24:10
Zak
five like like but let's Let us go for it another 4-0 loss and I'll be back to my use yourself mate, don't worry.
