Today's reading will cover Habakkuk Chapters 1-3. We will read about Habakkuk asking God how long it will be until God answers his cry for help against all the wrong doings going on in Judah. God answered him, saying that He would do things at the right time and they really would happen. In our discussion for daily application we will look at God's idea of time- things happening at the right time. We will look at verses from all over the Bible where God is clear that things are to happen at His appointed times. Even the demons, when being cast out by Jesus, were aware of God's appointed times in Matthew 8:29 when they asked Him if the was coming to torment them before the appointed time. We will look at John 7:6 where Jesus upheld this concept of time when He told his brothers that his time had not yet come. In our discussion for daily application we will talk about God having appointed times for everything, including the good works that He has prepared in advance for us to do, such as Esther, who was brought into a position of being queen for such a time so as to be able to speak for and save the Hebrew people. Let us ask God what works He has prepared in advance for us to do TODAY and EVERY DAY at their appointed times. Is there someone He brings into our path to speak to, encourage, point them to God? Is there someone we are in just the right position to help? Nothing happens by chance. God appoints us to do things in their proper times. We have free will. Let us choose to do the good works that God has prepared for us to do today and every day, for we were brought to where we are today, like Esther, for such a time as this.

One of the things I love best about this ah Bible in the hard copy is that it actually has each day set out like a devotional. So I'm just reading each day's daily reading.
00:00:32
Speaker
This Bible is specifically set up to be read in one year and the actual reading itself only takes about seven minutes in a day. And then it gets you the whole overview of the story of the Bible in just one year.
00:00:45
Speaker
That's a pretty big accomplishment in one year. So if you are following along on that commitment calendar, it's time to go ahead and take that out and get your sticker or however you're marking that off because you're about to hear the Bible today.

Exploring Habakkuk: Context and Themes

00:02:00
Speaker
We are going to be reading in the book of Habakkuk today. It is a short book. It is only three chapters long, and today's reading covers all three of them. Habakkuk is ah and a prophet, and he was writing at about the same time as Jeremiah. So this all takes place during the time before the Babylonians, which, by the way, were the Chaldeans. We call them the Babylonians, but they were ah Chaldeans.
00:02:27
Speaker
So ah just to kind of give us a reference, they're from Chaldea. Sometimes it can be helpful to understand geography as to who is actually where in today's namings versus the names that we knew them in the past.
00:02:43
Speaker
And ah so today, the main thing with Habakkuk is he is writing, asking about, he is is a it's a narrative where he is talking to God and he is praying and he is asking God, when are you going to bring justice? There is so much evil going on in the world that nobody obeys the law. The law doesn't even do any good because nobody is following it.
00:03:11
Speaker
And then we have God's answer to his prayer. And then the third chapter is a prayer of Habakkuk. And it's ah it's actually a song.
00:03:22
Speaker
So he actually has it at the very end, he actually gives prayer. musical instructions such as ah that it that it uses the stringed instruments.
00:03:37
Speaker
So it's very interesting to see. So he was a writer, he wrote songs, and so the third chapter is his prayer where he will be expressing gratitude and acknowledgement to God that even though times are hard, he is still trusting in God.
00:03:54
Speaker
So that is our overview of what we are going to be reading today, and so we have a little bit of perspective. Sometimes it's helpful to have a little bit of perspective as to what we're going to hear before we hear it in order to be able to understand it as we go along rather than simply reflecting on it after the fact.
00:04:14
Speaker
So here we go, Habakkuk chapter one.

Dialogues and Messages in Habakkuk

00:04:21
Speaker
This is entitled, Like Wind in the Desert. Here is what God told the prophet Habakkuk.
00:04:29
Speaker
Habakkuk asked, God, how long do I call for help? I cry out, people are being so mean. Why do you let wrong things happen?
00:04:43
Speaker
There's fussing and fighting. The law isn't doing us any good. Nobody is being fair. Bad people are hurting good people.
00:04:56
Speaker
God said, look at the nations. Watch and be surprised. I'm going to do something during your life. You won't believe what I'm going to do.
00:05:08
Speaker
You wouldn't believe it even if somebody told you it would happen. I am giving Babylon power. They are mean. They act without thinking.
00:05:18
Speaker
They move all over the earth. They take land that does not belong to them. People are afraid of them. They don't follow any law but their own.
00:05:31
Speaker
They are out to make themselves look great. Their horses are faster than leopards. They are meaner than wolves in the evening. They come down like wind in the desert.
00:05:44
Speaker
They take people as if they were sand. They laugh at kings and rulers and forts. They take over cities. They blow past like wind.
00:05:56
Speaker
Then they go on. They worship their own powers.
00:06:03
Speaker
Habakkuk said, God, you are forever. You are the Holy One, and we won't die. You are too good to look at bad things.
00:06:14
Speaker
You can't stand what's wrong.
00:06:19
Speaker
Chapter Two, Bad News. Then God said, write down what I tell you. Make it very clear. What I say will come true at the right time.
00:06:32
Speaker
It really will happen. There's bad news for people who steal things. They get rich by tricking people. How long must this keep going on?
00:06:44
Speaker
There's bad news for people who get rich by doing wrong. It puts their lives in danger. There is bad news for people who tell wood, come alive.
00:06:56
Speaker
They tell rocks, wake up. But idols cannot talk. Can an idol guide you? It is covered with silver and gold and it does not have any breath.
00:07:08
Speaker
But God is in his special, holy worship house. Be quiet for him, everybody. Chapter three is entitled, to Wow!
00:07:23
Speaker
Here is a prayer that Habakkuk prayed.
00:07:27
Speaker
God, I have heard of you. i say, wow, when I see what you have done. and do these things again. Let us see them in our lifetime.
00:07:41
Speaker
God's greatness covered the sky. His praise filled up the earth. His greatness was like the sun.
00:07:52
Speaker
the sun coming up in the morning. Light shone from his hand, and that is where his power hid. He stood up and shook the earth.
00:08:03
Speaker
The old mountains broke in pieces. The old, old hills fell. Were you angry at the rivers, God? You rode out with your horses and you took out your bow.
00:08:17
Speaker
You asked for lots of arrows. You broke the earth with rivers. The mountains saw you, and they shook. Waves of rotter water rushed by. The deep sea roared.
00:08:32
Speaker
Waves jumped high, and the sun and the moon stood still in the sky. They saw your arrows fly. They saw your sword shine like lightning.
00:08:46
Speaker
You walked over the earth in anger. and you shook up the nations. You came out to save your people. You threw out the leader of the land that did wrong.
00:09:01
Speaker
I heard it. My heart beat very hard, my lips shook, and my legs shook. The fig tree may not have buds, and there may not be grapes on the vine.
00:09:14
Speaker
There may not be sheep or cows in the pen. But I will be glad in God. And I will have joy because of God. He saves me.
00:09:27
Speaker
God makes me strong. He makes my feet to be like a deer's feet. He helps me climb up high.

Reflecting on God's Timing and Justice

00:09:39
Speaker
That is the end of our reading today. The book of Habakkuk.
00:09:48
Speaker
We open up today with Habakkuk asking God, how long is it going to be before he delivers justice? He says, how God, how long do I call out for help?
00:10:00
Speaker
I cry out, people are being so mean and why do you let wrong things happen? there's <unk> There's fussing and fighting and the law isn't doing us any good and nobody is being fair and bad people are hurting good people.
00:10:16
Speaker
And God responded. God answers our prayers. He says, and he even said to write it down to make it very clear so we would all understand it.
00:10:31
Speaker
What I say will come true at the right time. It really will happen.
00:10:40
Speaker
So today's daily application is God's divine time. His timing for everything that happens is at the right time. It's not at the time that we are looking for things to happen.
00:10:54
Speaker
It's not at the time that we want things to happen, but God knows the right time. He calls some of these times the appointed time. It says in in our version of the big, in the big Bible, I mean to say, it says,
00:11:14
Speaker
The vision is yet for an appointed time. God's times are appointed times. He appoints them. He sets them. And he says, it will not fail.
00:11:27
Speaker
it If it should be slow in coming, wait for it. For it will surely come. It will not delay. So in our timeframe of thinking, we may think that God is delaying, like it's taking a long time. He's drawing out the time, such as right now we are in what is called the Messianic age, where this is the time that people are coming to know Christ.
00:11:53
Speaker
And this is the time before he returns. This is in between his two arrivals. And it is before God's great day of judgment. And sometimes people pray for God's day of judgment to come and what is taking so long, but we are told that God's timing is not like our time.
00:12:12
Speaker
And Jesus spoke of this too, about the right time for things. In the book of, let's see, I'm going to go to,
00:12:28
Speaker
i did a search. for appointed times in the Bible, for when God is referring to times. And even in the beginning, in Genesis, God designated appointed times.
00:12:42
Speaker
He appointed things.
00:12:45
Speaker
In Genesis 18, the angel of the Lord is speaking to Abraham. And he says, is anything too difficult for the Lord?
00:12:56
Speaker
At the appointed time, I will return to you. And in about a year, Sarah will have a son. They prayed and prayed for a child for so many years, but it was not going to happen until God's appointed time.
00:13:16
Speaker
And then she would have her baby. And it says in Genesis 21, Sarah became pregnant and gave birth to a son for Abraham in his old age at the appointed time that God had told him.
00:13:33
Speaker
In Numbers, we see that the children of Israel are to observe Passover at its appointed time.
00:13:46
Speaker
And on, uh, And in Numbers, he says, oh, not Numbers. That one's just a repetition of ah the yeah Passover.
00:14:00
Speaker
when so When Saul was being appointed king, anointed in the book of 1 Samuel, we saw that we we read that Samuel ah had a meal prepared and that he had a portion of the meat reserved for Saul.
00:14:17
Speaker
If you've been with us for a while, you may remember that happening. And in the big Bible, it says, the cook took up the thigh, raised it and set it before Saul. Then he said, here's what has been reserved.
00:14:32
Speaker
Set it before you and eat because it has been kept until this appointed time for you since I said i have invited the people. So Saul ate with Samuel that day.
00:14:47
Speaker
We read in the New Testament with Jesus in the book of Matthew. The demons, when he was when Jesus was removing demons, casting out demons, they screamed, What is between you and us, son of man, son of God?
00:15:08
Speaker
Have you come here to torment us before the appointed time? So God has an appointed time for when they are to receive their punishment. And even they are aware of God's appointed times.
00:15:25
Speaker
And in, I believe it was the book of John,
00:15:34
Speaker
John chapter seven, Jesus talks about his time not having yet come. So Jesus was also aware of God's timing It says in John chapter 7, starting in verse 2, The Jewish feast of tabernacles was near, and therefore his brothers said to him, Leave here and go to Judea, so your disciples also may see the works you are doing.
00:16:04
Speaker
No one who wants to be well known does everything in secret, and if you are doing these things, show yourself to the world. For not even his brothers were trusting in him. Therefore Jesus said to them,
00:16:17
Speaker
My time has not yet come, but your time is always at hand. The world cannot hate you, but it hates me because I testify that its works are evil.
00:16:30
Speaker
You go on up to the feast. I am not going to this feast because my time has not yet fully come. But after his brothers went to the feast, he also went, not openly, but secretly.
00:16:45
Speaker
So Jesus was testifying that that the times were, that the people were evil, but that his time had not yet come. And so our daily application is to be mindful of God's appointed times.
00:17:00
Speaker
God has given us times such as the festivals. He has given us the Feast of Tabernacles, the Feast of Passover, And these are called appointed times, Moedim in Hebrew.
00:17:17
Speaker
And these are times that God set apart and he makes appointments for us at this time. He shows up at these times and we are to show up before him at these appointed times.
00:17:28
Speaker
In the same way, his judgments and in other things that we wait for in life, they happen at their appointed times. So we want to be mindful of God's time for everything.
00:17:41
Speaker
As we seek prayers for things, as we look for things to happen, that, for instance, no man knows the time or the day for when Jesus will return.
00:17:52
Speaker
We just know that he will. And so we wait for it. Just as God tells us today, it says, what I say will come true at the right time. It really will happen.
00:18:06
Speaker
So for those who would say, oh, Jesus is not coming back or or they are losing faith saying, well, we don't really know when he's coming back, so there's no point in doing things.
00:18:17
Speaker
We need to be sure that we are found doing our work as Jesus taught us. When he comes back, he said, it is good for the servant to be found doing his work and feeding the other servants and giving out their food at their appointed times.
00:18:36
Speaker
So we are to keep doing the work because God has given us work to do at our times, at our appointed times. And in the book of Esther, we find that her uncle Mordecai spoke to Esther, who was placed as position of queen.
00:18:54
Speaker
And she was Hebrew, but the king didn't know it. They were living in in ah in exile at the time during the book of Esther. And we will get to that in a little while in our reading.
00:19:06
Speaker
And Mordecai advised her wisely. He said, how do you know that you have not been ah brought to a position for such a time as this so as to be able to speak for the Hebrew people?
00:19:22
Speaker
So there are things that God gives us in our appointed times as well. It is not just some things. All of God's timing is divine.
00:19:33
Speaker
Everything is ah is that will happen at its appointed time. God brings people into my day for me to speak to, and they are not random. i meet I've met some of you at certain times, like at the grocery store or at work while we are working together or in our days, and none of this is by chance.

Daily Purpose and Spreading the Word

00:19:56
Speaker
God spoke to you and led you to where you were supposed to be to hear his word teaching you. at just the right time to motivate you to do and to teach you to be who you are and to do the the good works that he has set apart for you to do at your appointed times.
00:20:16
Speaker
So I encourage you each day and especially today to be mindful of what has God placed in your life today during his appointed times. What does he have appointed for you today?
00:20:29
Speaker
We all have things to do each day for God. So I would encourage you to ask God today, God, what do you have appointed for me today to do And then keep those eyes and ears open because we don't know.
00:20:47
Speaker
And that's part of the mystery and the excitement and is in looking forward in every single day that rejoice and be glad. This is the day the Lord has made.
00:20:58
Speaker
Rejoice and be glad in it. Rejoice and be glad in whatever God is bringing to you today for this appointed time. Is there somebody he brings into your path for you to speak with and share his word today?
00:21:13
Speaker
Don't turn your eyes away from it. Keep those spiritual eyes open and ears to hear so that we may know what to do. And God will open up our mouths with his Holy Spirit because we have learned recently that we don't need to be worried about what to say or even do at those times, these appointed times.
00:21:34
Speaker
His Spirit will teach us our Holy Spirit within us, God's Holy Spirit within us. will teach us and tell us what to say at those appointed times.
00:21:46
Speaker
So I hope that you are excited about the prospect as to what God may be bringing you in your day-to-day and in every day, because he has good work for you to do. And I hope that you feel that God has lit your light.
00:22:00
Speaker
So please, as always, click that light button at the end of your watching or your listening and spread this ah message with somebody that you know so that they too may know to keep their eyes and ears open for God's appointed times in their lives.
00:22:16
Speaker
And together we will be spreading the word about reading God's word. I hope you have a very fulfilling day today. as you fulfill what God has given you to do in your appointed time today.
00:22:32
Speaker
And as always, i will be here for you and everyone again tomorrow.
