Introduction to the DIY Goalie Podcast

00:00:06
Speaker
Welcome to the DIY Goalie Podcast, where hosts and goalie coaches Nathan Park and Connor Munday share their insights on how to become a better goalie.
00:00:20
Speaker
Goalies, welcome back to another episode of the DIY Goalie podcast presented by True North Goal Tending. We are on episode 90, which is pretty crazy that we've been going 90 straight weeks here. and Sometimes it's a little bit...

Nathan Park's Solo Episode

00:00:39
Speaker
Harder to get episodes in one of the one of those times is today. um it is just myself and Nathan Park on the podcast. Connor um is well, he's at work and doing a bunch of other stuff, but it's kind of the holiday season. We've been.
00:00:57
Speaker
hard pressed to find time to get on a podcast together lately, just with how busy things have been. bit of a good problem to have, but, uh, I know it's, uh, it's been a little out of the norm the last, uh, handful of episodes, but that's all right. Um, one of these days when we have some time, we are going to start front loading some episodes again and getting some guests on and all that. But, uh,
00:01:21
Speaker
Right now we're just kind of dealing with the wind down of the holiday season. so hopefully you guys had a good Christmas or whatever it is that you guys celebrate and are gearing up for a new happy new year. So that's exciting coming right around the corner. Hopefully you guys kind of have your ducks in a row 2026 and we can keep that development train going and you guys can have a good solid calendar year in the net.

Virtual Goalie Sessions Launch

00:01:55
Speaker
um so Just a reminder before we get started, um we are running kind of our soft launch on our virtual goalie sessions. So that means we can do a goalie session with any of you anywhere in the world. um And we have done a couple through the soft launch on top of the couple trials that we've done before we did our soft launch and they have all been going really well.
00:02:24
Speaker
um So if you guys want to hop on that, I will put the link for our intake form in the show notes that you guys can check out. um Eventually, when I have time, because these have been going well, this will be a kind of full time service that we are offering and our soft launch price won't be forever. So if you want to hop on some special pricing for that soft launch, you can do so in the show notes now. And yeah, so we got a good pricing on that. um They've been going really well. Pretty cool to see that we can do stuff basically with anyone, any goalie around the world. So if you guys want to hop in on that, yeah, just do that.
00:03:13
Speaker
We also do have a lot of stuff kind of in the works that is coming again. There's just not a whole heck of a lot of free time, but there is things that we are going to be excited to announce in the new year. Probably a couple months into the new year, we still have a couple of things figure out here. But um Another reminder that because tomorrow is the last day of the month, as i guess release of this podcast episode tomorrow is the last day of the month, we will have our newsletter going out. So if you guys want to hop in on that, we kind of have a special article each month in there.

Newsletter and Resources

00:03:51
Speaker
as well as a practice plan and kind of any updates on what we have to offer. um So if you want to get involved in that, you can head to truenorthgoaltending.com and just scroll right down to the bottom of the page. In the footer is where you can sign up with your email to join our email list.

Broadening Perspectives for Goalies

00:04:08
Speaker
um So getting kind of into the nitty gritty of the episode, um we are going to be talking about kind of getting outside of our bubble.
00:04:23
Speaker
And there's a couple of things we're going to touch on when it comes to this um topic, I guess. But basically, kind of what I wanted to talk about was just expanding our perspective a little bit. And that goes for a variety of different things. But I find when it comes to goaltending, because it is such a lonely position and because we don't get a lot of support as goalies, um sometimes it can kind of lead to us, whether it's goalies, whether it's goalie parents, whether it's goalie coaches, um we can kind of get caught in our own little world and we kind of.
00:05:05
Speaker
forget to think about some of the other things going on around us sometimes. um So I figured it'd be good to bring to light just some of those

Positive Body Language and Team Perception

00:05:14
Speaker
things. um This kind of came because i was talking to one of my goalies a couple weeks ago.
00:05:22
Speaker
said, I went to watch one of his games. He kind of struggled a little bit in the game, ended up getting pulled. um The rest of the game, though, the body language and I could see from the stands, the body language on the bench was not the greatest.
00:05:39
Speaker
um And talking to his coach later, he had kind of mentioned that, yeah, it was definitely something they noticed and something that they had to talk with him about. And so I had to talk with him about that, too. um Like he did play another game two days later. he bounced back really good, had an awesome start. But had a conversation with him on that, just talked about how Even though we as goalies are kind of disappointed in ourselves when stuff like that happens, we are upset with how we played.
00:06:18
Speaker
um And that's most of the time why we have that kind of negative body language, because we think we can do better. We think that, you know, we have a higher standard, I guess, and we let our team down and all that stuff.
00:06:35
Speaker
It doesn't look like that when we kind of express that body language. Right. And that's the conversation I had with my goalie because I've been there before, too. um Like I have had plenty of instances where I have not had a good game. I've gotten pulled.
00:06:52
Speaker
And the rest of the time, I've just kind of been in a bad mood. And it kind of shows in the body language on the bench. But that's not necessarily directed at the coaching staff or not necessarily directed at anything aside from myself and just how I felt about how I played.
00:07:09
Speaker
Now, even though that might be how you think or how you feel about it, a lot of times that's not how it comes across. Right. So we got to kind of think outside of just our own little world um coaching staff.
00:07:24
Speaker
scouts, other parents, teammates, stuff like that, they see it as kind of almost like a pouting or, um you know, something like that, where you're just sitting there, you're kind of exuding this like negative aura about you, like, we're not in a good spot in terms of how others are perceiving us. They think that we can't handle, you know, a little bit of adversity. They think that, you know, we're in a fragile state of mind or we're not a good teammate or, you know, the list goes on and on and on of things that people think. So even though you guys might internally just be disappointed at yourself, sometimes it doesn't come across that way from outside of your little world, your little perspective, right?
00:08:16
Speaker
So you got to make sure that this is kind of the sort of things that I wanted to touch on today and just like what we're thinking of or i guess changing the way we think and kind of including outside perspectives when we approach situations. um So that one's a big one is the body language, how we react after letting in a bad goal, after getting pulled, you know, anything like that.

Interactions with Teammates

00:08:45
Speaker
That body language, even though it might be something completely different, it can be taken differently than how you might be thinking it. So just be aware of that.
00:08:55
Speaker
And the other thing, too, when it comes to on ice um with goaltending, I know we make jokes about it all the time. We love to kind of rag on our D-men and our teammates and stuff like that. You know, oh, they never clear the zone or oh, they like to tip pucks in on us or oh, they like to push players on us all the time, blah, blah, blah.
00:09:18
Speaker
even though we rag on D a lot and we kind of just you know like to jokingly point the finger a little bit, um there are a lot of goalies out there that don't jokingly point the finger and they just point the finger, right? and um Even if we are joking about it, sometimes it's not taken that way either, right? Like, again, it could be seen that we're bad teammates, that we don't take accountability for ourselves, um that, you know, we're always constantly looking for somebody else to blame.
00:09:51
Speaker
um So that's something to keep in mind, too. Just when you are kind of talking about your teammates, your D-man, even your forwards, your coaches, stuff like that, even if you're joking around like,
00:10:05
Speaker
oh, D man, you always tip the puck in on me and blah, blah, blah, whatever. If you're always ragging on them, eventually they'll kind of, you know, not see that or I guess start seeing that maybe more as a negative thing and they might not.
00:10:22
Speaker
clear out that guy in front of you or they might not give a shot to that guy that snowed you after you stopped the puck or whatever the case is. Right. um So just thinking about the perspective from your D-man and your teammates as well, too, like they are doing their best with their skill set that they have, whether you think so or not, whether it seems like it or not.
00:10:45
Speaker
just like you, they are trying to do the best job that they can with the skill set that they have. They want to make it as far as they can in their hockey career. They want to make a good impression on scouts, on parents, on coaches, whatever the case is. Right. They're not actively trying to put you in a worse position.
00:11:06
Speaker
They're trying to do their job as best as they can. so That's another thing, too. Even though sometimes it seems like the whole world is against us as goalies, our team is doing their best. They're trying. They're on our side. Right. They want the same as us. They want to win just like we do. They want to have success just like we do.
00:11:27
Speaker
um So that's something that you guys got to kind of keep in mind as well when it comes to thinking outside of our own little bubble.

Seeking Diverse Training

00:11:35
Speaker
um We want to make sure that, you know, we're being positive, we're helping our team out.
00:11:41
Speaker
We're, you know, if they make a mistake, let them know that's okay. um We can keep working and and all of that good stuff.
00:11:53
Speaker
Another thing too, when it comes to kind of getting outside of our bubble, um is entirely when it comes to development.
00:12:06
Speaker
So i do see this a lot. I've heard it a lot, whether it's goalies themselves, whether it's goalie parents, whatever the case is. I hear or see a lot of, well, we put in so much work over the last season, over this summer, um we got so much better and we're still in the same tier or we only went up a tier or maybe we even went down a tier or whatever the case is.
00:12:37
Speaker
um And what we need to understand both as goalies and just players, athletes in general and parents of athletes, um other players are putting in the work too. They're trying to get better too. So even though you guys might have made significant strides in your development, have made significant strides in your game, have gotten significantly better.
00:13:05
Speaker
What happens if every other player or in this instance, every other goalie that you're up against put in twice as much work and got twice as good? Right.
00:13:16
Speaker
Or got that little bit marginally better than you did over the summer. Right. That's another thing, too, that I think a lot of people forget about because there's so much in their own little vacuum, their own little personal bubble.
00:13:30
Speaker
They don't think about the fact that other people are trying to put in the work to get better too, right? Just because that one goalie or those two goalies made that AAA team does not mean that they're coasting and saying, oh, I made it. We're good.
00:13:47
Speaker
right there. And I'm not going to put in any more development anymore. That's we're fine. Right. That's not what happens. They're still trying to make triple A next year or junior or major junior college pro, whatever the case is. Right. There's pretty much always either another step to get to Or a job to hang on to, because that's the other thing, too, is not only do those goalies want to try and get to the other to the next levels, but they're also trying to stay ahead of the goalies that are behind them. Right. So the double A goalies that are nipping at their heels.
00:14:22
Speaker
Right. Or whatever the case is, depending on where you play. They're all trying to get better. They're all trying to get a leg up. They're listening to podcasts, watching YouTube videos, doing strength and flexibility work, doing cognitive training, doing on ice training. Right.
00:14:38
Speaker
All of this stuff is not just you that's doing it. They're all doing it. So when you try and say. hey, why did my kid get cut? They got so much better than last year.
00:14:50
Speaker
Well, that other goalie could have got even better, right? And that's another thing that people have to think of. Not only that, but if you've gotten to the point of similar skill level of another goalie, but the other goalie has been on the team before, A lot of times coaches will take familiarity unless you're significantly better than the options that they have to turn to.
00:15:13
Speaker
They most likely will turn to what they know, assuming that they like what they know. Right. If they had a disaster season with their goalie last time, maybe they are looking for a change. But more often than not, if they know what they have, if they trust what they have and you come in at the same level or even sometimes just marginally better.
00:15:37
Speaker
If they don't know as much about you, sometimes that's how the cookie crumbles, I guess. Right. That's how coaches are going to pick. They're going to pick familiarity. um So that's another thing to think of, too. Right. There's other perspectives outside of your own and people are putting in the work not just you um the other thing to think of too is as someone one who's been around the game for a long long time yes there are politics yes there are all those things that happen
00:16:12
Speaker
but more often than not, there is a reason why you slash your goalie got cut or released or whatever the case is.
00:16:23
Speaker
More often than not, it's not because of a personal vendetta. Now, I'm not saying that doesn't happen because I know for a fact it does and have once been the recipient of ah of a little bit of politics and favoritism, bias, whatever you want to call it.
00:16:41
Speaker
um But more often than not, there is a good reason why um you've been caught or they pick somebody else or whatever the case is, too. A lot of times we kind of you know, point fingers, use that as an excuse, like, oh, they just know that kid. So they pick that kid. And the odd time that's true, but more often than not, it's because a it's a better fit.

Factors in Team Selections

00:17:11
Speaker
B, like a certain skill level or skill set better. C, sometimes it's just the look of a goalie because sometimes these coaches and scouts, they don't know goaltending, the ins and outs of it very well. So it's more like, Oh, that guy looks like a goalie. That guy looks like he's making his saves better. Right. Just stuff like that. um So as much as it does suck when we don't make the teams that we want, we kind of have to use that as motivation to put in the work and keep getting better. Understanding that again, outside of our bubble, other goalies are doing that as well. Even the ones that made that team, they're still putting in the work to get better. So you need to now figure out a way to put in the work to get even better than they are going to get right. So that's something that we have to think of too. But I do see goalies all the time, more so goalie parents, I should say, but sometimes goalies too that are like, I've put in the work, we did all these camps, we did all this training, we did all this dry land stuff. Why aren't we making the team? And it's you have to understand too that the other goalies, the other players, the other athletes are doing the exact same thing you are.
00:18:27
Speaker
So we need to be aware of that. The other thing to kind of along the same lines, um you need to understand that there's more than just your little area, your geographical area, right?
00:18:43
Speaker
You may be the best goalie in your town or your county, your province or state, right? But there are a lot more goalies out there than just that little area, right? You could be the best AAA goalie that your town has ever seen.
00:19:01
Speaker
And then when you go to junior, then all of a sudden you're kind of middle of the pack or even bottom of the league at that point, right? So that's another thing to think of too, is sometimes we don't even know what we don't know in terms of our competition, in terms of the other goalies that we could be up against down the road.
00:19:23
Speaker
um Even when it comes to like some of these tournaments, I'm sure you guys have all played in tournaments where you have teams coming from other countries, other provinces or states like halfway across your country, whatever the case is that you know absolutely nothing about.
00:19:39
Speaker
And you have no idea if you're walking into an eight nothing loss, an eight nothing win, a three two win, right? Like it it is a wild card. So just understand to that outside of your little geographical bubble, there is a lot more out there. There's a lot more competition. You might be the best goalie in your area. Then you take that step up to the next level and maybe all of a sudden you're fifth or sixth best. Right. And then you take up that next step and now you're sitting 15th or 20th. Right. So that's another thing to be thinking of, too. Like just because where you currently are, you may be the best doesn't mean you let your foot off the gas pedal. You still got to put in the work. You still got to develop. You still got to do what you do. Right. You got to think outside of that personal bubble. Right.
00:20:27
Speaker
um Just another thing too to kind of touch on when it comes to um the bubble is understanding i guess on the flip side of that that there's other options out there for training too right like what your geographical area has to offer for training might seem like it's really good because that's all you've known but you never know what else could be out there right and it doesn't even necessarily have to be like in person goalie coaching specifically it might be something like
00:21:04
Speaker
resources for, you know, online like YouTube or um a lot of providers now have their own apps with lots of really good content or, you know, it could be working with a sports psychologist or a nutritionist or even like a strength trainer that can do stuff remotely or again, kind of a shameless plug. But, um you know, a goalie coach that can do stuff remotely like we have kind of started rolling out.
00:21:33
Speaker
Stuff like that, right? therere There can be more to offer than what's just kind of in your area. um And that's something to kind of think of too is what else is out there? What else can potentially help me get better, help me get that little bit of an edge that maybe the goalies around me aren't doing right now?
00:21:52
Speaker
What can I do to kind of set myself apart? So it kind of goes both ways on that one, right, in terms of of getting outside of your bubble. um But either way, just kind of starting to think of what other people are doing um and kind of the competition that comes with that. And then what can you possibly do that your current competition isn't? How can you set yourself apart? Those types of things are kind of good to be thinking about and just think OK,
00:22:27
Speaker
Let's not get complacent where we are. Let's keep working. Let's keep getting better. Right. We talk about that one percent better each day. We talk about that kind of developmental mindset or whatever, where each opportunity on the ice, off the ice, et cetera, is an opportunity to get better.
00:22:46
Speaker
um So that's something that we got to kind of continuous continuously be thinking of. And kind of just, you know, again, expanding our range of thought, getting out of just the little bubble that we've kind of made for ourselves and start thinking about, okay, what's going on with my coaching staff? What's going on with my teammates? What's going on with other teams in my competition? What's going on with the goalies that are beneath me um in terms of tiering? What are the goalies ahead of me in tiering doing? What are the age groups up and down doing right.
00:23:24
Speaker
Starting to think about that and kind of trying to get, you know, as much information as we can. um That's going to, you know, start to kind of help us have that good developmental mindset and start kind of, you know,
00:23:43
Speaker
bringing ourselves new skill sets and building our skill sets to be able to kind of make us as well rounded as possible. right Because just going back to the start of the episode when we were talking about like body language and and being a good teammate and all that stuff, um those sorts of things, as you get to higher levels and the skill level becomes closer and closer between everybody,
00:24:09
Speaker
Those sorts of things are the kind of things that will set you apart. If you're a good teammate, if you're you know well perceived in terms of your approach and your mentality, your mindset, um if you're you know positive, if if you're good with coaches, good with teammates, all that sort of stuff, like good in the community. Those are the things that can help set you apart from somebody who has a similar skill set, but doesn't do those sorts of extras. Right.
00:24:40
Speaker
um That's kind of the big thing is just It's almost like when we talk about like empathy, right? Like we need to start thinking about things from other people's perspective to really be, i don't know, effective, right? or Or to really kind of build that skill set to make us as well rounded as possible.
00:25:06
Speaker
So that's kind of the general um thought, I guess, that I had for today and that I kind of wanted to get out to you guys. um Just basically, the more that we can kind of expand our thought, the more that we can kind of, you know, think of other perspectives and use that to our advantage, the better that we can kind of put ourselves together.
00:25:31
Speaker
in a position to get better, to develop, to you know have success. right So start kind of taking the blinders off a little bit. Start looking around a little bit.
00:25:43
Speaker
you know it It kind of goes back to to just, I guess, one more point, like a lot of goalie parents to even other coaches like head coaches and stuff like that, like to make comparisons, right? Like, oh, you were way better than the goalie you played today or, oh, you see that goalie over there. Maybe you're watching a game before your game or whatever. And it's, oh, you see that goalie over there. You need to play like that goalie or you need to make saves like that goalie or whatever the case is. Right. then
00:26:14
Speaker
That is not the right way to go about it when we're talking about this sort of getting out of our bubble. Like we don't want to be comparing because a lot of times it's apples to oranges, right? Like other goalies have other things that work for them. They have different skill sets, stuff like that. We don't want to be making comparisons necessarily.
00:26:32
Speaker
um It was mostly just kind of again, just having the open mindedness to think of other perspectives and how can we use that to our advantage? We don't want to be comparing or anything like that. um We just want to be able to kind of you know, take what we can, like take the information we can from outside of our bubble and use it to,
00:26:56
Speaker
um get better so just wanted to finish on that note because I don't want and don't want you guys to think that we need to be comparing ourselves we actually had an episode a while ago probably like a year ago or so now I'm talking about how we don't want to be playing like our pro goalies that we love or or we don't want to emulate the pro stuff like that because it's two completely different things. You've got a different skill set than they do. You're in a different part of your career than they are, etc. So we want to avoid that comparison. And hopefully that's not what you guys took from that because that's not what I'm getting at.
00:27:32
Speaker
um But just wanted to kind of elaborate on that.

Engagement and Feedback

00:27:36
Speaker
So that's about all I have for you guys today. um Just again, if you guys have any questions or if anything comes up that you guys aren't sure of or you want to just vent or whatever the case is, whether you're a goalie, goalie parent, goalie coach, anything like that. You can always reach out to us at goalies at truenorthgoaltending.com or DM us, True North Goaltending on Facebook, YouTube, TikTok, or YG Goalie Coach on Instagram. We love to hear your guys' ass input. We love to hear your guys' questions.
00:28:12
Speaker
um And we do tend to usually feature them on the pod when we do get them. It usually makes for good discussion points there too. um As we kind of just talked about, if you wanted to follow us on any of the social media platforms, we're at True North Goaltending, except for Instagram, like we mentioned, is Y-E-G Goalie Coach. um You can follow us on Spotify, on Apple Podcasts, or whatever kind of platform you're listening to. You can subscribe to our YouTube channel, give us a like, a thumbs up, But the biggest thing you guys can do to help us out is share the show, send it to other their goalies, kind of spread the word a little bit, really helps us kind of grow and get to the goalie community a little

Conclusion and Listener Support

00:28:59
Speaker
bit more. We have our clothing, our merch, all of that stuff. We have drills, which at some point I need to go in and really update because I haven't done that in a long, long time. um
00:29:11
Speaker
But we also have articles as well and kind of all of our services, whether in person or virtual um online at truenorthgoaltending.com. That's going to be getting a little bit of a revamp as we kind of offer more services here too. We do have courses as well. I do have some of those in the works too. I got way too much stuff going on and I do it to myself and I know that, but and that's why sometimes it's hard for me to get onto the pod. But um Appreciate you guys listening. Again, having the global reach we do is pretty cool to see.
00:29:46
Speaker
But thanks again for listening, guys. It was a pleasure. And you goalies take care. Make some saves.
