Newcastle 3-3 Liverpool - Match Review

Jesse Sarwar goes through all the main talking points after Liverpool came away from St James' Park with a point after an eventful 3-3 draw.

Kelleher's mistake may have cost us all three points at the end of the game, but is Darwin Nunez's profligacy in front of goal the bigger issue?

Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome to the Daily Liverpool Podcast, brought to you by the Global Sports Podcast Network. I'm your host, Jesse Zawat.

Match Overview: Newcastle vs Liverpool

00:00:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
Newcastle 3, Liverpool 3, that's the final score at St James's Park. Has Liverpool come away with a point after one of those classic Liverpool Newcastle games? There have been quite a few of those between these teams over the years.
00:00:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
Arnie Slott made changes to the team that started against Man City at the weekend. Kelleher stays in goal, Alison is still out injured and Slott has already said this week that the Brazilian will be back probably towards the end of December so Still quite a few games where Kelleher will be playing in goal for Liverpool. A back four of Kwanza at right back, which was a surprise. Gomez partnering Van Dijk in the centre of defence. Andy Robertson at left back, no rest for him because Simicas is still injured. ah ah Midfield trio of Gravenberg, Jones and McAllister.
00:01:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
and up front Mohamed Salah, Darwin Nunez and Cody Gagpo get the nod for this game.

Pre-Match Lineup and Tactical Changes

00:01:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
Now Liverpool came into this match in imperious form but that form was challenged from the off.
00:01:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
from a Newcastle team that was really up for the fight. We've seen this before and I said in the previous podcast episodes that this game was going to be very, very tough. St. James's Park under the lights, a big game, potentially a big scalp, the crowd will be up for this. And Newcastle have taken points of Man City and Arsenal already this season at home. And they obviously look to do the same to Liverpool from the off.
00:01:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I wonder if this team is going to be a team where if you stop Gravenberg, you stop Liverpool because Newcastle were all over the Dutchman as soon as the ball came anywhere near him. He was dispossessed twice in the opening few minutes, which I've not seen that this season.
00:02:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I have to say, Newcastle were very, very good in the way that they pressed and harried Liverpool. They didn't give him a Callister, Gravenberg, Jones, any chance to rest on the ball, to get their head up, to look, to move forward. And, you know, they really frustrated us.
00:02:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
And you saw that frustration kind of manifest itself through the bookings that we picked up in the first half. Graven Burke and McAllister both getting booked. I think Graven Burke's booking was probably fair, it was probably deserved.
00:02:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
I have to say the McAllister one was very, very harsh. I barely a foul, let alone a booking. But McAllister now misses Saturday's Merseyside Derby, which is a real blow for us because that Gravenberg-McAllister axis has been so important for the way that we've played this season.
00:03:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
I suppose the selection dilemma that Slott would have had is now settled. Jones will partner Graven Burke in that midfield with Sir Bosleye starting as well. Although Newcastle did start well, Liverpool still created chances with McAllister testing Pope from distance and then shaving the post with another shot.
00:03:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
And at this stage of the first half, you you know you you wonder if all those big games, those big performances have started to catch up on Liverpool and that this is the inevitable dip. you know there's There's been huge game after huge game, Real Madrid, Manchester City,
00:03:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
coming back from behind against Southampton. And around the half hour mark, Newcastle go ahead.

Key Moments and Goals

00:04:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
Probably deserved. Isaac, who it looked like he you know he might be a doubt for this game. And I'm sure Liverpool supporters would have been happy if he wasn't on the pitch. But he he did start and he smashes smashes in a shot from all of 25, 30 yards.
00:04:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
Kelleher, absolutely no chance. I think the key to how Isaac beat Kelleher was how quickly and early he took his shot. It gave no time for Kelleher to react, to get set. And as I said, I'd say that Newcastle probably deserved to be ahead.
00:04:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
And yeah know just a couple of minutes after conceding, it could have got worse. Joe Gomez attempts a back pass. He doesn't get enough on it. And Anthony Gordon pounces. He's through one on one. But Keleher comes to the rescue as he's done so many times. he's I mean, I think that Alison is the best keeper in the world and he' and he's the best when it comes to one on one situations.
00:05:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
But Kelleher has really, really shown that this season, you know he's right up there as well. So it could have been 2-0, but so you know it remains at 1-0. And that really is the story of the first half, that Liverpool are looking They're looking pretty shaky, not not very confident that the passing is off. It's not smooth. They're very easily harried and put under pressure by Newcastle's press. And that's really the story of the first half. And they go in one nil down. We'll come back to talk about the second half and player ratings right after this break.
00:06:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
OK, welcome back. Let's talk about the second half. We come out looking a lot better, a lot livelier, which is no surprise because I don't think we could have got any worse. And it's clear that slot has got into them, maybe not shouting and screaming, but really kind of emphasizing the importance of getting the ball being a bit quicker in that pass, being a bit quicker in terms of their movement and just moving the ball around quicker and within five minutes of the restart, Liverpool are level. McAllister pounces on the slack pass in midfield, plays it to Salah. Salah sets up Jones who runs into the box and smashes in from close range.
00:07:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
So, you know, the improvement is quite drastic with, as I said, looking much, much better, moving the ball around quicker, a bit more purpose. And it looks like we're going to go ahead when Salah puts in a cross. Gackpo heads across the goal and somehow Nunez fails to make contact.
00:07:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
contact At first, I thought it was just out of his reach. But in fact, when you look at the replay, he gets to the ball, but puts his foot over the ball. Just incredible. And I love Darwin Nunez. I think the the fans love Darwin Nunez, but they we probably love him for all the wrong reasons that we should love a striker, which is you know, work rates and his his effort, he always gives 100%, always sacrifices himself for the team, but he just doesn't put the ball away enough for me. Now, the the game conditions are changing, the rain is pouring down, and Liverpool are much more in this game now.
00:08:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
Gravenberg, again, he's not really on the ball much. Newcastle are really keeping players on him. And and whenever he is on the ball, he's really put under a lot of pressure. And, you know, Newcastle You know, that they they are still a threat on on the counter. And Tenali now, about 63 minutes in, plays Issach in. Issach plays Gordon through, he slips it past Kelleher. Kelleher gets a hand on it, but not enough. And Newcastle are 2-1 up. And you just think, oh, this is going to be one of those games that just slips away from us. but
00:09:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
To Arnie Slott's credit, he acts and acts very quickly. So ah around around about three minutes after going behind, he makes a triple substitution. Gomez comes off for Trent, Gravenberg comes off as a Boslite, and McAllister comes off for Diaz so it's full attack. Liverpool are going all out with a 4-2-4 and just a few minutes later we equalise a beautiful pass and move sequence between Sir Bozzoli, Trent and Salah and Salah does what Salah does, a clinical finish
00:09:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
you know it just he just gets into the box and on his right foot he's weaker foot but you know showing Nunez how it's done just instinctive he doesn't waste any time just very very efficient and just puts the ball away and the keeper's got no chance and so we're back in it now Anthony Gordon, I want to mention, I think he's a really good player and now I was quite positive about his links to Liverpool in the summer. We were apparently very close to signing him.
00:10:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
But dear me, he's probably the Premier League's worst diver. Trent gets booked on 69 minutes, Nunes gets booked on 70 minutes, both because of just terrible dives from from Gordon. Literally zero contact.
00:10:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then there are about, there are three incidents of play, five minutes apart that I think says a lot about Mohammed Salah and Darwin Nunez. On around about 79 minutes, the ball falls at Nunez's feet. It's a bit of a scramble, falls at Nunez's feet. He's about five or six yards out and he makes an absolute hash of it.
00:10:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
zero composure and it really is frustrating because as I said before he's really loved by the fans. He works hard. He creates mayhem in opposition defenses but ultimately he's a striker and he needs to put these chances away because very often you don't put those chances away and you do get punished.
00:11:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
and a few minutes later Muhammad Salah runs at the Newcastle defence, gets into the penalty area and from an acute angle fires in with his right foot and it cannons off the bar. I mean just an unbelievable bit of forward play would have been a great goal but then just two minutes later Salah becomes the Premier League's top scorer this season A Trent ball in, takes it on his left, spins and just shoots low into the corner. Goal, Liverpool are back. That's the difference between Salah and Nunes.
00:11:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
And you do wonder, how long can we afford to have this kind of lopsided reliance on Salah? Gatpo chips in with goals, so does Diaz, and jotters when when he's fit, you know, he's a reliable goal scorer.
00:12:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
But Darwin Nunes, I think is, I think it's beginning to become a real concern. And there's been a lot of talk and a lot of links between Liverpool and the Egyptian forward Marmouche. And the kind of the kind of natural instinct is for people to think that it's one Egyptian for another, that Marmouche will come in as a replacement for Salah, whereas I think that the likelihood is is that if he does come in, it's going to be as a replacement for Nunez.
00:12:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
And so with 3-2 up on the 90th minute, there's a free quick free kit to Newcastle. A routine ball a is coming into the Liverpool penalty area. It looks like Kelleher is coming to either collect or to punch the ball. But inexplicably, he opts to leave it, thinking that the ball is he' going out of play. It's a complete error of judgment.
00:13:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
The ball doesn't go out of play. It falls to Fabian Schier, who I'm not sure. I mean, I'm convinced he doesn't mean to shoot. He just gets the connection on the ball. It goes across goal, hits the post and goes in 3-3. And, you know, we're entering stoppage time and
00:13:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's a real body blow. I think more for Kelleher than for Liverpool. On reflection, I would say if if if we're honest, I don't think we probably deserved anything more than a point on the basis of the whole 90 minutes. The second half, we were very good. I think we we outplayed Newcastle. But if you take the whole 90 minutes, you know, a draw is probably the fair result.

Controversial Decisions and Penalty Discussion

00:13:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
But in stoppage time, the drama doesn't stop. Ninety-third minutes, Alexis McAllister takes a shot and it hits Dan Byrne on the arm. Now the arm is tucked in, but it's a shot on target. The referee waves it away.
00:14:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
The commentary says that it's probably a penalty in the Champions League. And I just think that the penalty rule, just keep it simple. Keep it simple. And I'm not just saying that just because of today's incident. I've said this on previous podcasts. I'm fairly consistent on this. I think any time there's a shot on target,
00:14:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
and it hits the hand, it has to be a penalty. Irrespective of intent or anything like that, if the ball is going towards goal and it hits the hand or the arm, it's got to be a penalty. I mean, think about it. If if a player is on the line and the ball is going in and it hits your hand you know unintentionally, should that be a penalty?
00:15:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
Surely it has to be. So I think biased opinion maybe, but I think that should have been a penalty. But as I said before, I think 3-3 is a fair result, a point for each team. We'll go to a very, very quick break. And after that, we'll talk about the player ratings. so
00:16:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
Okay, welcome back.

Player Performances and Reviews

00:16:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
Let's round off this episode with some player ratings. Starting with Kelleher, who had, as I said, a very eventful game. I thought he was pretty good throughout the 90 minutes. I don't think he could be blamed for the first two is that goal was just a great, great strike. And yeah, it's a Gordon goal. It's just you know it's just one of those one-on-ones he got a hand on it so you could say that he was quite unlucky but the third goal was obviously it was a an absolute howler and it's it's cost us it's cost us the win two points dropped but it's really really harsh on Kelleher because he has been outstanding ever since he's come in to step in for the injured Alison he hasn't put a foot wrong
00:16:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
But you know, that's goalkeeping. Whenever you make a mistake, it invariably leads to a goal. So pretty harsh on Kelleher. But so I think overall, you'd have to give him a six, I think he would have been a seven, were it not for that mistake. But the six was such a such a howler, such a big mistake, I think you'd have to give him a six.
00:17:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
across the backline, Kwanzaa started at right back. I was surprised to see him at right back, given that Joe Gomez was playing. I thought the natural positions for both of those players would be Gomez to be at full back, where he is, he's deputized for both Trent at right back and Robertson at left back over the last two or three seasons. and And he's done it many, many times. So it's quite experienced there.
00:17:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I think he would have been a better bet to to Marshall Anthony Gordon on that flank. And Kwanzaa, apart from the couple of errors that he's had over the course of the last season or so, going into last season as well, know he was he was brilliant last season. And he's just had a couple of mistakes, but he's very, very good next to Van Dyck.
00:18:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
so i So I was surprised not you know to see them not kind of in each other's positions. Gomez at right back in quan quan ah centreback and he just looked out of sorts. he's He's not a right back, he's not a full back and so I'm going to give him a six. Hopefully we don't see him at right back again. I'd prefer to see him in the centre of defence. On the other side, Robertson like I'm going to give him a 6 out of 10. I think that he was OK. I think first half, I think most of the team were quite shaky. In the second half, everyone improved. But the concern I've got with Robertson is because Simicas is now injured, there's no cover at left back.
00:18:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
And Robertson has got to play every game. And I'm just not sure whether he's he's capable of doing that in the sense that we're not going to see the best Andy Robertson if he's playing every three days. In the centre of defence, I thought that you know Van Dyke was OK. I thought he had a decent game. i'd get I'm going to give him a 7 out of 10.
00:19:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
Gomes, I'm going to give him a six. I thought that he he was okay, but he looked shaky and quite indecisive at times, you know, to be fair, the whole team, particularly in the first half did as well. He got better as the game went on. But that side of the defence and that's another an area of concern and why I was surprised that Kwanzaa played right back and and ah Gomez at center back. That side just looked really exposed. Gomez next to Kwanzaa.
00:19:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
and it was an obvious weak point and you saw Newcastle and Anthony Gordon in particular probing down that flank and looking to exploit any uncertainty. He had a a real mistake as well that could have led to a goal were it not for Kelleher coming out to know to save Gomez and Liverpool with a one-on-one save with Anthony Gordon. Into it's and into the midfield I think Graven Burke is probably his worst game this season. want to say worst game is just because I think that that the whole team wasn't functioning well and he was really targeted by the Newcastle ah ah midfield and the forwards, he was harried, he looked rushed and his passing was a little off and so
00:20:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm going to give him a 6 out of 10. I think McAllister and Jones, I thought, played pretty decent. McAllister was probably our best midfielder, his usual hard-working, industrious self, and it was a threat going forward.
00:20:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
he He had a couple of shots on on target hit the post. And, you know, he he worked Pope in the Newcastle goal. As I said, he's been booked. So he's out of the Merseyside Derby on Saturday, where Jones will probably play now. And i I'm going to give Jones a seven as well. You got a goal. He played OK. But I think his decision making with some of his passes, particularly in our own half,
00:21:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
they sometimes put us under a pressure and he does have this tendency to kind of hold onto the ball for that kind of one or two seconds too long and I think when you're under pressure and you're being harried and and hassled by a ah really aggressive pressing team I think you've got to be a bit quicker in in the passing.
00:21:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
Up top, I think Gatpo I thought was pretty decent when he was on. I'm going to give him a seven. Salah was just Salah. Everyone was pretty poor in the first half.

Salah's Impact and Contract Situation

00:21:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
But that second half, again, he just showed how valuable he is to Liverpool. And yeah, some people are bored by this contract saga, but it's going to rumble on.
00:22:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
Simply because Mohammed Salah every single week, every single game, whether it's in the Premier League, whether it's in the Champions League, is reminding everyone, he's reminding the club, he's reminding FSG, he's reminding his teammates, the supporters and everyone that's watching,
00:22:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
just how good he is and he's reminding them in the best way possible for us which is with goals and assists and here he is gets a couple of goals again and an assist he could have had a hat trick should have had a hat trick it's the 37th time where he scored and assisted in the same game which is the most in Premier League history He's now the top scorer in the Premier League. He's just a phenomenon. He's an absolute world class striker and the quicker Liverpool sort out his contract situation, I think the better for for the club as a whole and the team going forward. Nunez, I'm going to give him a 5 out of 10. It's a serious question marks over him. I think that
00:23:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
Again, I think that, you know, he he worked hard. He really did. But it's just that end product. And the chances that he's giving up are gilt edge chances that they are really easy chances. They're six yards out, seven yards out where he doesn't make a serious connection on the shot. So it would be different if he was you know making an effort from 18 yards 25 yards and the keeper's you know pulling off world-class saves or it's hitting the bar it's hitting the post but these are gilt edge chances that he's he's not sticking away and so that's a real concern for us.
00:24:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
The subs came on, they made a difference. Trent, Subozlai Diaz, I'm going to give seven to all of them. I can understand why Trent didn't start bearing in mind he's coming back from a hamstring injury and Slott is you know easing him back into the team.
00:24:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
And he's got to be careful because Conor Bradley is already out, I think for probably a month. So there's there very little cover in that defensive back line with Canate out, with Simic has out and Conor Bradley out. It's looking a bit thin in that defensive line. So fully understand why Trent didn't start.

Conclusion and Preview of Next Match

00:24:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
And, you know, that's the game. That's the game. And those are the player ratings on what feels like a disappointing night, because I think any time you're ahead in a game and you concede very late on, it always feels disappointing. It always feels like a defeat as ah ah as opposed to a draw. But I think in the cold light of day, I think coming away from St. James's Park,
00:25:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
with a point after we didn't play particularly well, I think it's got to be seen as as a positive on a night where Manchester City won and Arsenal won. So the points gap has been cut, City and Chelsea are nine points behind Liverpool and Arsenal are seven points behind Liverpool.
00:25:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
And we all know more, I suppose, at the end of the coming weekend, Premier League fixtures. And I think if we can be evident in the Merseyside Derby, and I think that's become more critical now that we take four points from this two block of games.
00:25:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
whether it's beating Newcastle and getting a draw at Everton or the other way around obviously has to be the other way around now I think if we get those three points at Everton I think this you could consider this a ah ah very good week for the club given what we've already done building up to this week.
