every club every day the global sports podcast network podcast network There you go. The intro is so good. They played it twice. Welcome back to the Daily Tottenham Podcast. Me, Joe Forrester, here from the Daily Tottenham Show. We've also got Chris with us, who listeners to the pod. We'll obviously recognise his dulcet tones. And we're joined by Adash from the Daily Liverpool Pod.

Preview: Tottenham vs Liverpool

00:00:32
Speaker
That is because there's a heavyweight clash in the Premier League this weekend. um As Spurs get ready to host Liverpool. Adash, welcome to the Daily Tottenham Pod, mate. How are you doing? How's your season going?
00:00:43
Speaker
Yeah, I'm doing great. The season's going really, real really well so far. um Obviously, I had a little blip in terms of two back-to-back draws in the Premier League um for from a little point of view. But ah no, it's going amazing. And no, I'm really looking forward to the game on Sunday because the way you guys are playing, it should be a cracking game.
00:00:59
Speaker
Yeah, we ah we're recording this 12 or so hours after Tottenham's quiet, uneventful game in the Carabao Cup against Manchester United. um Chris, how are you feeling?

Tottenham's Recent Performances

00:01:13
Speaker
Have you aged several years?
00:01:16
Speaker
I've been to the doctor this morning, I've got those heart tablets. I've stopped having to go and all these things that are good for you, because I now realise, well, I realise it for a while now that I could look after my heart being a Spurs fan. It's not been good. But it's entertainment, mate. Fantastic. Here's Ange. That's it, yeah. Ange, at this point, I think Ange Prostikoglou is trolling us, because he he literally laughed. Did the gladiator quote? Are you not entertained?
00:01:46
Speaker
And but i've never I've never seen a football manager do that. He's like basically saying, I don't care that we're seeding loads of goals. You're like, oh, well, what do you do about that? Adash, what do you think the kind of Liverpool fans are ah thinking going into this game against an incredibly unpredictable Tottenham?

Tottenham's Unpredictability vs Liverpool's Consistency

00:02:04
Speaker
I mean, I think that's you think you nailed you nailed it. Unpredictable. like We don't know what Tottenham is going to turn up. We could easily come to Tottenham and win comfortably, but also we could be 2-0 down within 10 minutes. It's just we don't know what Tottenham's going to turn up. I know what Liverpool will turn up. we We will probably play our football and maybe give you guys a chance at the back, but I feel like we are consistent this season. We've, I think recently been a bit sloppy defensively, but on the whole quite solid um in defence, probably the best defence in the league, but I just don't know what Tottenham's going to turn up. So like I can't, I don't know what to expect on Sunday. We could have a free, free draw or maybe a free nil win for Liverpool. It's going to be so unpredictable, but I i know what I'm guaranteed is going to be entertainment.
00:02:45
Speaker
Definitely from a Tottenham point of view. um Hopefully they all can do that as well. But this is it. And Liverpool, obviously, topping the table, i would I would say from my point of view, and I'm not sure if you agree, Chris, being by far and away the best team and the most consistent team in the Premier League this year. Spurs, currently 10th in the league, um conceded the same number of goals as Chelsea, scored one fewer but at eight places below spell out below chelsea in the table essentially what that tells you is when they win they tend to thrash people and they tend to lose games by just a goal and. Chris have you got it is so hard to do this it's gonna stick your finger in the air and hoping for the best you've got any kind of idea about how you think it might go on sunday.
00:03:29
Speaker
It's really interesting with Adash, because at the end of the day, what you just said about not knowing what Spurs are going to play is exactly what every Spurs fan now is like. So you'll guess as good as mine, we could be go for a 1-0 win. But unlikely. But you know we can defend, but it's just a it's just that level and and and the pressure. I mean Liverpool do press, don't they? So um yeah.
00:03:56
Speaker
I think at the last what I'm doing last Southampton game I think I said it could be a six five or six or draw or something like that and that's kind of what I feel like it you know it doesn't matter if we go one nil two nil up three nil up um there's always going to be opportunities for the other side and you know that doesn't do your heart any good great for the neutral but I'm not a neutral obviously when I'm watching spares so um Yeah, and you probably feel the same if you're a Liverpool fan as well. Great, we're getting some wins sometimes, but and then the football is is generally exciting, but it's ah simple mistakes, it's individual mistakes often, and which is really frustrating.
00:04:33
Speaker
and ah you can ah don't ah As we spoke before, I don't know who to blame. you know Is it Andrew? Is it because he won't do that style? Is it the players not adapting in the in the moment to be able to actually think, actually, no, I don't pass it back right now. I'll now turn and I'll clear it. It does happen sometimes. I did i saw Dragos undo it once or twice. You might not have the skill to to bring it down this chest like other players and and and pass it along, but it's going to be interesting.
00:05:03
Speaker
yeah It could be a very good match. We could go up again in one or two nil, well, one nil maybe, but we'll see. Well, I'm with you. I think, I mean, ah Liverpool will attack, Liverpool will press, of course they will. um so And Spurs will do the same, so you've got to expect goals. As you say, individual mistakes, pick who you think about the Manchester United game. Bear in mind Spurs without two first choice centre backs.
00:05:26
Speaker
and first choice keepers became abundantly clear in the Tottenham game last night and I was just thinking okay Manchester United are frankly at the moment a pretty mediocre team and Liverpool I was just thinking oh if that's if that's Mo Salah and you're playing around him like that you're you're gonna you're gonna you're asking for trouble and Adash kind of tactically, what do you think Spurs fans can can expect to see from Slots Liverpool on Sunday? Yes, it's

Liverpool's Tactical Adaptability

00:05:56
Speaker
a good question. I think from from a tactical point of view, Slots has shown this season that he's willing to adapt depending on the opposition and I think that's something that as a Liverpool fan is quite refreshing because
00:06:07
Speaker
Obviously, we're so used to Klopp and having that one approach, Gongho, a bit similar to you guys in terms of post-Goglu style of play. Apart from the cups and league titles. It's actually very similar to Klopp's first few seasons at Liverpool though, because we were defensively all over the place, but we were given like probably the most entertaining team.
00:06:24
Speaker
when Klopp first arrived. yeah Let me just write this down. Let me just write this down. That's for every excuse now, moving forward. go hit yeah pin that tap Pin that to your vision board, Chris. You can wake up in the morning when it's going badly. When we're losing against the x-wing chicken, you go, um what? It's right next to the Lamborghini.
00:06:42
Speaker
um Yeah, I know. I mean, that that is that could potentially happen with post-Cogley. It's obviously a big question yet to be answered. But from Slott's point of view, I feel like he does love that control. He does love to have that possession.
00:06:53
Speaker
he's He's someone that loves composure and calmness in the in the team. And we can't always guarantee that, especially like we're going to be playing you on the weekend. So I think he will set up with sort of that solidity, but also looking to press you guys, knowing that you guys will be susceptible to a mistake. I feel like we'll try to... It'll be like you guys have so much energy and we will try to calm it down. But I feel like we could get sucked into that as well from a tactical point of view.
00:07:22
Speaker
A bit similar to the Newcastle game you had a few weeks ago where Newcastle just... I've never seen them perform like that this season, but they were just incredible. I think, depending on who scores ah who who scores the first goal and who's like really going for it in that first 15-20 minutes, I feel like that will dictate the tempo of the game. um But hopefully Slot and the little boys from my point of view obviously can can withstand that.
00:07:46
Speaker
and Chris, do you think there's any kind of, because I look at Liverpool and I don't really see many weak points to exploit, but do you think tactically there's anything that And will look to do or anything he'll look at? basic is ah Is there any way that that spurs you feel can can hurt Liverpool?
00:08:03
Speaker
Yeah, I think we can hurt any team, to be honest. it's it's not that That's not been the problem, is it really. it's It's actually adapting to the situation. So you know if we get with slot, they do press, they do attack, but it's much more measured, and they'll be a bit more compact. And they they will he will make subs during the game to to change that as well. And he doesn't necessarily do that, although he can argue that he hasn't got the players currently to do that as well. um But I don't think it's in his philosophy. um because he wants the players to be the best they can be and um and work out. But I think that we can definitely hurt them. But again, it's going to be because we are susceptible on the break and we do the high line. And you only saw that yesterday against Manu when Diallo came on. And um yeah, a lot more press speed um and put us under lots lots of pressure. Not necessarily, yes, it was what we were making, but at the same point,
00:09:01
Speaker
it's going to be interested and see how that works out against Liverpool. But um and analogy wise, I think we're a little bit like a puppy at the moment, we're going around, we've got the ball and you can't get the ball off us, we won't give it back to you. um And you know, once we lose a ball, you do a fake throw and we'll be looking for it and you' you've gone off the other direction. That's what we are currently.
00:09:20
Speaker
I like that. You you also, um you said you made kind of an interesting comparison between Slott and and Foster Coggloo earlier, Chris, basically can kind of, I can't remember exactly what it is you said, but basically saying that kind of on a slot was kind of the grown up version of of Angie Foster Coggloo.
00:09:41
Speaker
um And I think Spurs fans kind of, yeah, very much recognise that and that adaptability you mentioned Adash, I think that's something that Spurs fans kind of would cry out for. It's reading, this is Anfield, the Liverpool blog this morning, and they've kind of identified that battle between Destiny your doggy, should he be back, um and Mo Salah is potentially kind of a key element in the game. Where are Liverpool fans at with Salah at the moment of Darsh? Because obviously he he upset a few people by with his contract chat and not seeming to be that committed to the club, but he is still Mo Salah.

Mo Salah's Leadership at Liverpool

00:10:18
Speaker
Yeah, I mean, he's been unbelievable this season. So I can't, from from his on the pitch performances, I don't think any Liverpool fan can can be can be complaining. I mean, he's got
00:10:26
Speaker
I think it's 30 goals and assists in 23 games or something like that. is It's ridiculous numbers. It's it's better than his first season numbers, which is saying something. um He has been the go-to player for Liverpool. um He's just been so reliable. He's been reliable for a number of seasons at Anfield. But I think this season, and he's kind of taken the ownership of the team. And I feel like under slot, he is the main man. And maybe under Klopp, he was more fitting into the system where I think slot gives him the ownership to just go and attack just do do your game and I think that's that's a change we've seen from a local fans point of view um obviously yeah like he mentioned he's he's made those comments about the contract situation and that's obviously a big stress for local fans along with Van Dyke and Trent I could tell you guys I've had a vision that on Christmas Day
00:11:10
Speaker
Liverpool are going to announce all three of them will sign their contract. So that's my like, that's what I want for Christmas, really. I feel like a lot of Liverpool fans want that. You're not going to burst into the song, are you? I don't know. I don't know. I have a vision. I have a vision that's going to happen. So if it does happen, then I've called it. I've spoken to it into existence. Believe and you can achieve. Yeah, exactly. Right, we're going to be back, obviously previewing the game just a few moments time. But right now, do you have a story to tell that the world needs to hear?
00:11:38
Speaker

Is there a weak area that that some of our players and those those kind of forwards are on fire at the moment? Any kind of, yeah, any any space that they could look to exploit? um It's a good question, actually. I think you mentioned earlier our press and it is is still at a decent level, but I don't think it's at the level of that clop.
00:12:36
Speaker
put in the local team. um and Obviously, we've We don't have Manet, Salah and Firmino as a front three. It's now probably Nunez, Diaz or Gackpo and Salah. So I don't think we're we're as intense. And I feel like when you guys play out from the back and you guys can pass it one, two touch and get at our midfield and defense, I feel like that's something that could be a potential weakness for Liverpool. um Obviously not comparing injuries, but we've also, I think we're without Canata who does an amazing job defensively. He covers sort of not just his own position, but sort of that right channel in defense.
00:13:08
Speaker
so I feel like with Bronzo Gomez, I think he's going to probably slot into center back there. I feel like we're not as defensively strong in the team with, without Canata. I think he makes a massive difference. And I feel like you guys can sort of have some joy um when you play that sort of one, two touch football. Also son, I know he has a great record against Liverpool. He scores like every time he plays Liverpool for some reason. and um So I feel like he's going to be the danger man. If you guys can get Madison on the ball as well, creating those chances.
00:13:36
Speaker
i I think you guys don't have to fear about creating chances. You'll create chances. It's just defensively from your point of view. That's what I think. Yeah, absolutely. chris Chris, you kind of think, I guess the thing that jumps out to us as Spurs fans is potentially that defense. um To be honest, I actually thought, I think that Radi Dragsten in particular has done a pretty good job. And actually, it sounds very strange for a team that are as leaky as us. The center backs aren't really the issue.
00:14:04
Speaker
um Yeah ah yeah you I think you're right and great next to him I think for for me obviously what he's had to do and he's out of position and his age and his first season in the Premier League he's done really well so um he's for me he's probably one of my player of the seasons really but um yeah I really do like the way we've been playing, to be fair, in bit in parts. um But obviously, the benefits of Dragasan, he hasn't got anybody next to him to um he's going to push too far forward, and he hasn't got the speed to make up the ground ah when when they lose the ball. So, Archer Gray tends to stay with him, and he's technically a better footballer anyway. so Yeah, and I think the worry comes obviously with, as you mentioned, all those players, like I mean,
00:14:49
Speaker
Gappo Nunez, Diaz, Salah, kind of take your pick. um like that The quality is is outrageous and it'll be itll be a real test. and How much, Adash, are you looking for but kind of going into into Christmas in top spot? Because obviously at the moment you only kind of have one realistic title challenger and it pains me to say it's one that nobody was thinking. It's it's Chelsea. How important is it kind of psychologically to go into into Christmas top of the Premier League?

Psychological Edge: Top by Christmas?

00:15:18
Speaker
I think it's really important. I think given that we've actually not statistically, we've not won a game in December in the Premier League for Liverpool this season yet. And also if we're kicking off after Chelsea play Everton away and if they get a result, they will go top of the Premier League at Christmas. So it's a big, this game has massive implications on the festive period, but also for the season going ahead. So I think it's massive. If slot can get to Christmas top of the Premier League,
00:15:46
Speaker
ah think I think we're in a really good position. And yeah, we've we've had a game postponed, we've dropped points recently, but overall the season's been amazing. I think if you asked any Liverpool fan, would you with slot coming in, would you want to be top at Christmas? We'll be like, yeah, of course, but we don't think it's going to happen. So he's he's definitely massively exceeded expectations and it'll just be a great sort of mini achievement um in the season. And so it can make all of us Liverpool fans dream because I think he i mean,
00:16:12
Speaker
as a Liverpool fan, the title is the big thing. um we We love the Champions League, we love all the other cups, but you've only won one title in 30, 40, 35 years. and that's that's the big I think Liverpool fans would all want that as us the the achievement this season, and we're in a great position to do that if we can win on Sunday. Chris, I just had to to Google it, by the way. A title is something that teams win. ah at like I've not heard of it. ah It's not really a thing. yeah not railway niceis It's always nice hearing every supporter say, yeah, for for us, this is the one. and we're like We don't really care about the other cups. We've won them lots of times and they're they're good, but yeah, this is a stepping stone to the title. whereas ah you know What's our stepping stone to the cup? um Hopefully it's not, you know we'll get further and we'll will play well against Liverpool, but um yeah, cranky, who knows. But I think going back to what you said about Slott in his first season as well, yes, there's a new manager bounce, but he hasn't done that much to change it from Klopp. He's just, like you said, he's less aggressive on the press. And because of that, they they sit back a little bit more and they're a little bit more in the block. So um they're probably structurally a bit more defensive or you when they need to be.
00:17:23
Speaker
which has helped really, especially when you don't have, like you said, the midfielders they had previously with Klopp pushing on, whereas we get exposed quite a lot because we have, yes, Koulisessi's been playing on the right, but he pulls into the centre and then we've technically got two, we've got quite a bit of gaps, which hopefully you won't see. That did occur to me when I was kind of reading about this, is it Destiny, Doggy versus Mo Salah, is that the battle?
00:17:51
Speaker
doggy will be stood in the Liverpool six yard box down the other end of the pitch so it's not shouldn't he they probably won't even meet uh spence spence is playing well i really like jess spence he's got the speed and he's got footwork and um actually every game he's got better he hasn't given the ball away so much at which sometimes happens he's been stronger in the tackle so yeah i've we can complain all we want but ten typically we've been playing okay to be honest yeah in in parts and that even when we were feeling up and I heard Amarin say that Man United yeah yeah last night where were in control, well you weren't in control you're losing so um you didn't really get control of the match because ultimately you were losing and yeah you didn't take
00:18:34
Speaker
take your two chances. And that's something which we have not been guilty of as well in previous matches. But um yeah, I think Liverpool, going back to Liverpool again, I think they've done really well. And it's a funny old league, isn't it? Everybody beats everybody. I mean, you can argue about lots not from the Forest being title contenders as well. And I've saw lots lots of fellow podcast people from not in the Forest will say, hang on, you know, mention us as well, because they're up there. But um Yeah, we'll see. I guess the real season starts after Christmas in that respect, but um for the title in particular. um But I don't know where we'll we'll be at that point, but hopefully we'll be a bit further along. I think that's that's probably Adash's nightmare if if Liverpool don't win it this year because Forrest pipped them to it. That's awful. might not just be Liverpool, it will be Arsenal as well.
00:19:25
Speaker
They'll be kicking themselves. I mean, I don't know what's going on with them um at the moment, but this but let's not talk about them. Who cares? Yeah. yeah there's not the The only thing that matters is the Arsenal don't win the league. So whoever can sort that out for us. Exactly. We're going to do predictions in a minute. But first up, this podcast is part of the Global Sports Podcast Network, the only network bringing you exclusive daily news and views on your Premier League team, the Premier League, women's football and fantasy football, a unique listening experience that puts fans first.

The Global Sports Podcast Network, every club, every day. ah Right, it's time for score predictions, and ah it's very cruel, but i'm gonna I'm gonna have a dash go last.
00:20:08
Speaker
ah so So you can stew in mine and Chris's misplaced confidence or otherwise. um Chris, what are you what do you think? What's your prediction? I think I've been wrong every time I've done this and every but crossover. um And I've been up in crazy wild sometimes, but you know I think I'm going to go for two-all draw. um I think that's decent and I think there's good money on that. I think that we might get the first goal, then we will go two-one down. well perhaps, and we'll get we'll we'll get it at the end. I'm not sure. The the the pressure on both for both sides, when they pressure press, is is immense. and you know You only need a deflection to go in, that kind of thing. so We could win 2-1, 3-2, but I think 2-1. 2-1, okay. Do you know what? I'm actually um'm going for 3-1.
00:20:56
Speaker
Because I find it very hard to predict. and It's Christmas. Exactly. Exactly. I find it very hard to predict a Tottenham defeat, even though I can just because

Score Predictions

00:21:07
Speaker
I just don't want to. not be believe Yeah, but it's, um it it yeah, we could conceivably get thrashed. um That's absolute. But I think yeah, three three all is a prediction slash a hope because I'd be pretty I'd be obviously want to be everybody at home, but I'd be very pleased with the point against Liverpool kind of.
00:21:27
Speaker
given how they've played. Adash, what do you reckon? Oh, this is so tough. Yeah, like you said, it could be anything. Go with your head. You know what? My original thought was 2-2, but I'm going to go for 3-2 Liverpool win just because I think if I look back to the game last season, which was a lot of controversy as well, I feel like Liverpool players will have it in the players that played last season will want to get revenge. Hopefully, that's why I would want to see it as well. What happened last season?
00:21:56
Speaker
yeah You don't remember. no I was clearly onside. Oh, yeah, sorry. no I did listen back to the recording of the VAR and they they're increasingly frantic. um And yeah and i've like I've got no problem with Liverpool whatsoever. It's just like it was just quite amusing because it's just quite funny when it goes for you. Yeah, yeah that is true. to her I mean, yeah, I mean, it was just that was the worst decision by far last season. But yeah, hopefully none of that on Sunday. Yeah, it's good to see you moved on from it.
00:22:24
Speaker
but we're We're living in your head rent-free, I like that. Well Tottenham did have that stage because obviously Fernando Urente with a dodgy kind of handball to put us in the Champions League against Man City and Gary Neville did say Spurs best player is VAR, which I'm perfectly happy with. but i can i can i just need You need all the help you need. Yeah, exactly.
00:22:42
Speaker
Yeah, exactly. Yeah, and she doesn't care. So so it's got to go go away. um Yeah, look, we think it's gonna be a goal fest on Sunday. um Make sure you listen out next week for what's Christmas next week, isn't it? So a bit of reaction on Monday. um But then everyone will be having having a bit of feet up that chill time. um Look, Adash, thank you.
00:23:01
Speaker
