Liverpool vs Real Madrid Match Recap

00:00:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm Adarsh Ramchand and Liverpool have just beaten Real Madrid 2-0 at Anfield, an absolutely incredible game and brilliant performances all round. I've just been notified that Conor Bradley came off the pitch and as he was emptying his pockets, he took out his phone, wallet and was a Canadian empath. What a performance it was from the right back and indeed the whole team.

00:00:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's how we feel in Tom. i touch How are you feeling after that game?
00:00:40
Jesse
Okay.
00:00:42
Tom Goward
That is the best I've seen Liverpool play in a few years.
00:00:44
Jesse
Okay. Okay.
00:00:46
Tom Goward
I thought the crowd were amazing. and We were just talking before here about that Bradley tackle and Mbappe and that seemed to be flip the switch. um And yeah, they were on it.
00:00:56
Tom Goward
that Everyone was on it. The pressing was immense. The attacking was good. The defence was solid. um I really enjoyed watching that and to come away with 2-0. Could have been 3 as well if Marietta missed the penalty. So overall, very pleased.
00:01:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, no, absolutely buzzing. The person who had the best view of the game was Jesse.
00:01:12
Jesse
closer
00:01:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
He was our anchor, Jesse.
00:01:14
Jesse
Okay. Okay.
00:01:14
Jesse
Okay. yeah you know echoing the previous comments i thought it was a absolutely you know, a top, top performance from Liverpool, ah from front to back. I thought it was a really, it was a, I think it was a perfect slot performance in the sense that it was very controlled. But when we needed to attack, we were just ferocious in that attack. um But there there were there were so many players that just played so, so well. And and we just played Real Madrid off the park, which is which is always good.
00:01:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
What do you think of the game?

Historic Win Against Real Madrid

00:01:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, no, I mean, it's our first win against Robert, and I think since 2009, when we beat them 4-0 at Anfield, I remember, obviously, Gerard's getting that brace, I think, in that match. But yeah, no, an absolutely outstanding performance. Michael, what did you make of the game? Obviously, 2-0 win. Both goals, Michaela, Sturgak, Poe, brilliant performances all round.
00:02:06
Michael
Yeah, I mean, it just kind of that this game just kind of proves that if Trent does want to go there, it's a downgrade, um really is. I think like the fact that they've got Mbappe, the fact that they've got Bellingham, who are up for Ballingers and stuff like that and were quiet the whole game and Mbappe did not look good at all. Like there are players playing for like Burnley who are better than him.
00:02:31
Michael
Like they they were playing proper Burnley ball sitting back, like trying to hit hit us on the counter attack. But they, but at least Burnley could actually do it at Anfield and these guys, these frauds can't.
00:02:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh, wait, no, I mean, I completely agree. Like, I mean, yeah. I think they only had the the first shot on target in like the 80th, 90th, 90th minute of the match. I think it was what I guess at the end, but, um, no, Tom going into the first half for the beginning. I mean, we kind of really took a while to get going. But then, uh, as you mentioned offline, that Bradley tackle on Mbappe was unbelievable. And it can kind of set the tone for the for the rest of the match.
00:03:05
Tom Goward
Yeah, that tackle, and I think and that chance early on where Nunes probably could have squared it to Diaz, he took the shot, and then the ah young defender, Madrid defender, was it essentially, I cleared it off, hit off the line, and I thought there, I thought, oh, we're up for this, and they just looked up for it, and then just little things like that tackle, just going to get some crowd going, the momentum, and and um'm I'm really um really happy, especially going into Sunday, I think that's sort of, if I was a City fan tonight, I'm looking at that going,
00:03:32
Tom Goward
while we're in trouble on Sunday, I think. If we can play like that um on the weekend, then I can't see why we

development

Second Half Analysis and Tactical Breakdown

00:03:39
Tom Goward
don't beat Manchester City.
00:03:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I mean, it's the perfect result. You need to go into a big game like that on the weak ones. Like 2-0, clean sheet. Real Madrid didn't have many chances. We were clinical in our chances. Jesse, I mean, going into that second half, we looked on top from the big minute.
00:03:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
The second half was all blue.
00:03:56
Jesse
um
00:03:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
McAllister, again, the first goal. What did you make of that goal? It was brilliant, sort of, interplay on there for the box.
00:04:02
Jesse
yeah great great interplay and you know i think the really the really pleasing thing was uh was it as you mentioned we you know we we came out in that second half and we just picked up where we left off because there's always a danger that a halftime break if you're doing really well it can just kind of kill that momentum but you know the team came out and You know, it was just 100% from that first whistle.
00:04:32
Jesse
we were We were at their throats immediately. And I thought McAllister, the interplay with, I think it was Conor Bradley, wasn't it, who gave the assist?
00:04:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:04:42
Michael
Damn.
00:04:42
Jesse
Yeah um and you know a great finish and I just think that the way that we control the game once we went ahead I think that's the really the most impressive thing about this Liverpool team and it's the thing that really gives you a lot of confidence and a lot of hope in terms of what we can achieve this season because you know we just seem to have a real calmness about us ah where we don't panic you know if it's nil-nil we don't we don't chase the game too much we don't throw everything at it and you know there were just a lot of players there that really stepped up and really really showed this competition that you know we're in it to win it
00:05:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, 100%. It was, it was just such a dominant second half performance. I mean, ah for me, the midfield in that second half were absolutely outstanding. Michaela said, like you mentioned, getting the goal was was brilliant all match. I thought some of his passing and his tackles are were excellent. Michael, obviously we've spoken a lot in on the podcast about slots in game management and sort of changing at halftime. Did you notice anything he tweaked in order to get that second half performance? And obviously we're taking towards the cops that does have a factor.
00:05:56
Michael
Yeah, I think that was ah that was a huge factor. But I think also, um like you kind of noticed that Bradley was playing more of a right wing. I think in the first half, Salah was getting a bit marked out of the game by Mendy. He was like right on him and keeping close to him. But as soon as Bradley was basically playing as that like right winger, basically, and leaving Salah a little bit wider,
00:06:17
Michael
it meant that he had more space, could get into it a bit more and obviously Bradley got into it more as well because he was he was popping up in those spaces to lay it off to Macalester or just kind of be a nuisance and and like I think that was that was one one change that definitely happened. I think also um Real Madrid's approach, it felt like they had a few passengers up front because they just weren't pressing. So like they were basically, they kind of defended in like a 4-4-2.
00:06:44
Michael
which then meant that our three-man midfield just kind of played through them.
00:06:44
Jesse
Yeah.
00:06:48
Michael
So there were occasions where, like, Grabenbert should just turn one of their midfielders and then suddenly we've got a ah massive overload in the middle. And, like, though that kept happening over and over again and just Ancelotti just didn't change it.
00:07:00
Michael
I mean, he kind of did a little bit when he brought on Vasquez, put Valverde in midfield, it kind of changed it a little bit, but, like, we were still running through there and it but it was it was still a great performance and I think I think slot came ah got the tactics right and ah for his first time against Real Madrid I think this is a good ah ah a good way of of starting against them.
00:07:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, no, it was, I mean, slot, I think he was outstanding in terms of making, he didn't make, he didn't have to make too many changes. It was kind of one of those messages where you just got to keep going. It's wrong with your team out there for the taking. That's why, that's why I thought, um, but we already mentioned the first goal. Tommy will be, um, I know I mentioned him, but it was in Bradley's pocket. He didn't have a chance to equalize and obviously a brilliant save from Keller. Did you think it was a penalty first of all?
00:07:44
Tom Goward
Yeah I think he sort of, yeah it's a soft one, I think i think it wasn't enough to overturn it. um I think that was probably maybe the reason why it was still given, but that's probably the only downside tonight is obviously Robertson's given two penalties away in back-to-back games, albeit if you think the Saints one was inside or outside the box he still gave a penalty away.
00:08:05
Tom Goward
um So that's probably the only downside to tonight's performance is maybe Robertson. You know, he got the assist for the second goal, but um yeah, that it wasn't great to see that. um But yeah, Kelleher coming in.
00:08:16
Tom Goward
clutch again with a save and he's got to be the best number two that football's ever seen. It's incredible. And and I don't see why when Alison's at back fit, he doesn't continue to keep his place, you know.
00:08:23
Jesse
Okay,
00:08:27
Tom Goward
He's proven this last month that he's good enough.
00:08:27
Jesse
thank you.
00:08:29
Tom Goward
he's We all know he's good enough. um So when Alison comes back, I think Alison should start fighting for his place back in the first team instead of the other way around.
00:08:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I mean, he's been he's been absolutely incredible. I mean, that penalty save Jesse, what was the reaction like in Anfield? I was screaming.
00:08:43
Jesse
Yeah, yeah i mean
00:08:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
That was that was an unbelievable.

Kelleher's Performance and Team Resilience

00:08:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
so
00:08:46
Jesse
yeah we we were right behind the goal, so we had we had a great ah great view of that.
00:08:51
Jesse
um And echoing just you know what's already been said about Kelleher, there's been ah a big narrative about injuries with some other really big teams like Real Madrid and Manchester City.
00:09:06
Jesse
And they do have injuries, I'll grant them that. But, you know, we are without Alison, who is bar none, he's the best goalkeeper in the world. We are without Trent Alexander Arnold, arguably the best right back in the world. We're, ah you know, ah the backup left back, Simakas is out, Jota is out. You know, we do have some significant injuries. And the fact that we're, you know, we're not even thinking about the fact that we don't have the best goalkeeper in the world.
00:09:36
Jesse
is just ah such a compliment to Kelleher because even towards the end, um you know, he produced a one-on-one save when, you know, Real Madrid had ah a chance towards the end. But just his all-round performance, he's so calm. um But I have to disagree. I do think that as soon as Alisson is fit,
00:09:58
Jesse
I think that he will come back into the team and that he he should come back into the team. I know it sounds really harsh on Keller because he literally hasn't put a foot wrong. um But Alison, he still is better than Keller. And I think that you'd you'd have to have him back in the team. But but a great performance from Keller.
00:10:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I mean, I mean, it's fair to say Alison's got his work out, though, in terms of if he does put wrong, ke you've got you've got to keep ah in color who's going to step up and play it play unbelievably, if he does have to fill in.
00:10:27
Jesse
Yeah.
00:10:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Michael, obviously, we just got a penalty, but we also got a pen penalty, a brilliant play from Salah, and then unfortunate to miss. out I don't know what you thought of it. If you cut across it, smiths it it was was kind of a weird one, really.
00:10:47
Michael
he seemed He did seem to scuff it. There was a bit of dirt that came up after after he hit it. So I think it was also just like he just kind of wanted to blast it and just kind of i would he just kind of hit the floor first and just put it wide.
00:10:56
Jesse
I think he's going to step up and do it the wrong way if he does have to do it.
00:11:01
Michael
It what wasn't the end of the world really. You could see him laughing afterwards. I think they all, or the whole Liverpool team knew that like, we weren't relying on that. More goals were coming. Real Madrid weren't going to get another sniff. Like after that penalty, I think that was their one big, that was the only way they could maybe get back into the game. As soon as Kelleher saved that, it just kind of turned the levels up to 11 and just kind of allowed the boys to just kind of push and push and get that yeah that next goal. um Also on Kelleher.
00:11:31
Michael
Like the fact that he's come through our academy and the fact that Bradley's come through our academy as the two best number twos in the world. Like and the fact that we've signed Mama Dash Villy and stuff like that and that kind of puts a question mark over Kelleher.
00:11:42
Jesse
to
00:11:43
Michael
like I wouldn't want to see him leave, but like he probably has to leave. if He's too good. um and and if he was like If he came through three years later like and Alison was a little bit older, I think he's he's making a claim for that starting role earlier. but yeah i think like i also From this game, I also thought that like If Trent does leave and Bradley can keep like fit, I think out of the three he will be the least missed.
00:12:08
Jesse
I'm going to put it back down.
00:12:16
Michael
like just based on like how Bradley was playing because he's a completely different player but the system doesn't seem to have lost anything by Bradley playing obviously I don't want him to leave but just thinking about it like Salah and Van Dyke I think are going to be a bigger miss if they do go um but yeah I like Trent's obviously a scout so I want him to stay but Bradley is also incredible yeah
00:12:24
Jesse
I
00:12:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I mean, it just goes to show we didn't miss and not play in the beginning. We probably did more than enough to play the final game. We may get onto the hit performance as well, the second part of the podcast.
00:12:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
But just before we go to the quick break, um obviously Leopold made it 2-0, brilliant cross from Robertson. He kind of made up for his little mistake in the penalty um and ahead of him backpedaled to make it 2-0 and basically sealed the free point.
00:13:03
Tom Goward
Yeah, I like the little corner from Liverpool with something different, going short, playing it back out to Robertson. And then, yeah, just, I can't believe Gallipo had that much space in the box for the free header. You know, I thought the young guy from Madrid did all right in the first half tonight and, you know, I know he got a yellow early on, but, um yeah, completely unmarked. No picking up with Gallipo and the easiest header in the world for him. And to claim all three points tonight, it's brilliant.
00:13:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
I thought he was brilliant when he came on as well. He did well to get and get into the rhythm of the game and obviously bought that second goal to to wrap up the three points and a big win in the Champions League.
00:13:35
Tom Goward
Yeah.
00:13:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Now, after this very short break, we're going to talk about standout performances, but we'll cover that after this break about St. Gosto.
00:14:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
Fantastic. So like I said before the break, we're going to talk about standout nemesis from today's match against Real Madrid's brilliant 2-0-1.
00:14:25
Jesse
for the pre pivotal
00:14:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
Jesse, I'll come to you first. Who do you think was the standout player in the pitch?
00:14:38
Jesse
Yeah, I mean, there's there's quite a few players that can stake a claim. I think, you know, Kelleher was very good. um I think in the entire back line, I mean, Van Dijk and Canate were as commanding as ever. I thought Robertson, despite that,
00:14:52
Jesse
um giving away the penalty I thought you know had a really solid game but for you know for me I think um Connor Bradley I just think was just outstanding I thought he was the definitely the for me was the man of the match I thought that the the tackle that he that he did on Mbappe it just set the tone for the entire game and you know Liverpool just kicked off ah kicked on from there. But he's all around his distribution, he's you know his work rate, his support in attack. He was just up and down that pitch for the whole 90 minutes. And you know i think you know Michael's already mentioned about the contract situation with Trent. I think you know i think yeah he's got a point in the sense that
00:15:39
Jesse
You know, if if Trent does leave, and obviously we don't want him to leave, no one would want the player of Trent Alexander Arnold's calibre to leave. But if he were to leave, it doesn't now look like, you know, when you know we're we're staring down the abyss now if if he leaves. Because Conor Bradley, I mean, yeah again, as Michael said, if he stays fit,
00:16:02
Jesse
He's got that position for you know for the next seven, eight, 10 years. And he was absolutely brilliant. And I think even, bear in mind how Slott plays his football, I think it could be that Conor Bradley is a better fit for us as a right back than Trent. But yeah that's ah that's a discussion for another pod maybe. But for me, man of the match, Conor Bradley.
00:16:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I mean, it was absolutely outstanding. I think alongside the tackle that he put on Mbappe in the first half, I thought that assist for Michaelsson's goal was absolutely sublime.
00:16:30
Jesse
um but for the most
00:16:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Like, just a little cushion pass into his path for Michaelsson to finish.
00:16:35
Jesse
just been thursday
00:16:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
Michael, do you agree with Jesse's honour, kind of rightly, as you mentioned?
00:16:42
Michael
Yeah, yeah, I wholeheartedly agree. um To be different, I'll probably pick someone like Curtis Jones. I think he was everywhere. He was carrying the ball so well.
00:16:51
Jesse
Yeah.
00:16:53
Michael
um like there were There were a few occasions where he would basically run half the length of the pitch through everyone and just lay it off and kind of get through everyone, which was like very, very impressive.
00:17:03
Michael
And I think he is really coming into his own. um i like i I prefer him in that deeper role where McAllister is, but when you play McAllister, Jones and Graven Birch together, it kind of makes that midfield seem so solid. um like i think he I think he is great in both of the positions. like he's almost a bit He's too good in both positions, so he's never really going to lock that position down.
00:17:27
Michael
like I think he's just going to be covering both, um which is a little bit annoying because he he is such a good player, but like the fact that he was like carrying the ball so well, he was just involved in everything.
00:17:37
Michael
He was tracking back, he was putting pressure on, he was doing everything. I think he's also ah good for an honourable mention, um but I agree Conor Bradley is like my man of the match really.
00:17:43
Jesse
think I think a
00:17:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, no, I mean, he was outstanding, wasn't he? But just one question. I mean, he, and another local, a local lad in the team, alongside of, from the academy, Bradley and Keller, I thought he's playing in midfield with Mellingham, Kammabinger, Modrich as well, and he's absolutely outstanding.
00:18:04
Michael
Mm hmm.
00:18:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
So, yeah, absolutely outstanding. Tom, did you have any other standout players? Obviously, Conor Bradley is going to get the headlines, but anyone else stand up for you?
00:18:11
Tom Goward
ah Well, you mentioned Curtis Jones, but I think McAllister as well, not only for the goal, I just s think some of his link-up play, not just today, but in the last few games as well, has been outstanding. When he gets further forward, that's that's his role, right? He's playing a bit further forward. I know last year he played a bit deeper, but I thought those two today were the way they interchange Jones and McAllister. You know, yeah they do both jobs and then behind them.
00:18:35
Tom Goward
They've got Grabenberch as they're tidying up everything, spinning players as well on the centre of the pitch.
00:18:42
Jesse
much
00:18:43
Tom Goward
I think we'd all say Bradley, but i'll quite like to put my I know he did get man in a match in um ah play the matchs tonight, ah but McAllister as well, I'd like to shout out. The two Champions League goals already for him this season is pretty good going.
00:18:52
Jesse
to <unk> in state
00:18:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, it's remarkable that his Champions League debut this season.
00:18:58
Jesse
it' trying to be distributeed
00:18:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, a player like him has won a World Cup.
00:19:00
Michael
Yeah.
00:19:00
Jesse
one of most
00:19:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
He looks, I mean, he's definitely set for this level. He's, he doesn't look out of place.
00:19:04
Jesse
It doesn't matter how I try to, because I have goals up.
00:19:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
He was outstanding and that goal was absolutely fantastic.
00:19:08
Jesse
It's fantastic.
00:19:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
So yeah, no, definitely an honorable mention for McAllister.
00:19:09
Jesse
So you have to get on with the mission of getting the right stuff.
00:19:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
And obviously, it leaves us top of the Champions League group.
00:19:13
Jesse
I was thinking, if you just have a couple of this stuff today, you're actually going to end up with eight points, ten points, and then you're going to end up with a couple of those.
00:19:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
Five wins out of five, 15 points. Two points play of Inter, who are second, ah with 13 points.
00:19:19
Jesse
So it's 13 points per day,
00:19:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
Jesse, what

Champions League Prospects for Liverpool

00:19:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
does this win say about Liverpool in the Champions League?
00:19:22
Jesse
and then you're just going to end up with a point in the chest.
00:19:25
Jesse
Well, i think I think it means that you know we are, I think we're effectively through to the knockout stages, um but whether it's automatically or ah through the playoffs. And um'm I'm not suggesting that you know we can take our foot off the gas in the Champions League, but I think you know we we can really, really focus on the Premier League.
00:19:50
Jesse
which I think if you ask most supporters, I think the position that we're in, I think we've really, really got to, you know, really focus on extending our lead in the Premier League as much as we can. But, you know, we've got ourselves in such a great position now. And this win, this performance against Real Madrid, it's Real Madrid. This will send a message.
00:20:15
Jesse
to to the whole of Europe, to the rest of the competition. um you know that that We're a serious contender for this tournament and I think once we get through that group stage and into the knockout stages, you know it's going to be back to that whole saying there's going to be no one that's going to want to come to Anfield and play us.
00:20:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, i mean like I mean, if you saw Anfield tonight and the atmosphere, if we can replicate that and get fruits in it of well pretty much through to the next stage and into the knockout phase, then that's going to be a fortress for for for us and obviously a big test for a lot of different teams. ah Michael, just before we go, obviously, like I mentioned, five out of five wins in the Champions League, but we returned to Premier League action on Sunday against Manchester City. Obviously, we're all buzzing after that game. Can we carry this form into the the weekend?
00:21:00
Michael
Absolutely. I think the the collapse of City in recent times, especially with like apparently Pep having a fight in the changing room, stuff like that, like they're crumbling, which is great to see. And I think if the 115 charges on top of that can can happen sometime soon, that would make the icing on the cake.
00:21:19
Michael
um I think on the weekend I think we've got to be cautious because City obviously have a lot of quality, Harlan can turn up whenever whenever he wants so um I think if we're cautiously optimistic about it um there's definitely, we can definitely get get something from it and and maybe even like humiliate City at the same time which would be incredible with with the likes of Walker and that who ah ah over the hill and and losing the losing a step. Walkers now ah now

Looking Ahead to Manchester City Clash

00:21:48
Michael
should be playing for Barnsley as opposed to City. So um if Luis Diaz can get at him and do what Werner did um and humiliate him, show him who's got the real pace, that would be great to see.
00:22:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
