Introduction and Show Overview

00:00:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome to the Daily Newcastle. My name is Ian McKay. I'm hosting today. I'm joined for a little bit of a Mac and Joe Sunday Massive by Joanne.
00:00:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
How are you, Joanne? Are you ready for some, are you ready for some massing up?
00:00:24
Jo
I'm good.
00:00:28
Jo
i love a bit mashup, especially a Mac and Joe.
00:00:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
Or is it, or is it going to be could be a chinwag or the tittle tattle that I remembered from last week, which I quite like.
00:00:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
and We're just going to have a
00:00:37
Jo
Yeah, we'll just follow up.
00:00:38
Jo
It'll be fine.
00:00:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
we're just going to have a bit of a chat to start the week on Monday morning with sort of an update.
00:00:44
Jo
Mm-hmm.

Transfer News and Speculations

00:00:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
Because we were sure when we said, yeah, we'll work every day through the summer that there was going to be loads of transfer news to talk about. And um I don't know. It's gone very, very quiet on that front, I think.
00:00:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
and
00:01:00
Jo
Yeah, I think we talked about it last week, didn't we, about realistically, we don't actually expect a lot of movement, especially on our side of things, until the end of julo June, beginning of July, to really, so I think that that's really bedded in now, to the point where the rumours are just rumours, ah the Pedro deal doesn't appear, even the press aren't trying to progress that now, they're saying we're in talks and they've left it at that, the Ilanga thing has just been left, it's kind of hanging as well, hasn't it, so The odd name, like we covered Rashford last week as well.
00:01:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:01:31
Jo
Everything's just getting thrown in the mix, but there's nothing solid because I don't think, if I'm honest, anything is going to solidly happen until the end of June, beginning of July. So maybe in a week or so's time we might have a lot more to chat about.
00:01:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, we might do.
00:01:41
Jo
Fingers crossed.
00:01:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
We might do. um Chelsea though, from their South American base at the moment, um because they're all supposed to be playing football over there, not sucking every
00:01:53
Jo
Hmm.
00:01:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
player that every other team gets linked with and then going after them as well because that was um of the one of the updates from that Jao Pedro deal that we talked about last week is that Chelsea are in for him now which would be a kind of a pain because they can pay whatever they like um and they're in London aren't they which apparently is a great big draw
00:02:08
Jo
Yep. Of course they are.
00:02:22
Jo
That appears to be.
00:02:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
I know a lot of people who live in London who can't wait to get away from it. So I'm not sure why it is.
00:02:27
Jo
i agree. It's
00:02:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
I guess they feel on 300,000 a week or whatever it is.
00:02:31
Jo
bit different.
00:02:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
You can probably find, i yeah, you can probably find something to do.
00:02:32
Jo
They live a different life to us Ian. Live a rich life.
00:02:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
um
00:02:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
We've been linked quite regularly with Concef at Liverpool.
00:02:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
He was mooted last year and also before the transfer window opened. as somebody who could perhaps be part of a deal which would allow Liverpool to come and get um Anthony Gordon.
00:02:43
Jo
Mm-hmm.
00:02:57
Jo
Mm-hmm.
00:02:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
But, Quanta has left Liverpool to join Leverkusen, so he's not going to be available for that, which is good. But, another one of our targets, and longest range target that we've had, I think, Mark Gahey, is now being linked to going to Liverpool.
00:03:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
Although he has said that he's not guaranteed he's going to be a first-team choice, he's just going to see out his contract at Crystal Palace.
00:03:26
Jo
ye yeah. yeah.
00:03:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
It seems a bit lame, to be honest, and not very fair on Palace either.
00:03:32
Jo
lot of players are doing it now though, aren't they?
00:03:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
and
00:03:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
So, I mean, there is still transfer activity going on, or is it just that the YouTubers and social medias and press are talking about it?
00:03:47
Jo
This is true. Again, goes back to what we've just said, isn't it? The rumour mill will always be the rumour mill, but there seems to be nothing kind of solid. I did see something earlier, by the way, today. I did sit down for five minutes.

Notable Transfer Updates

00:03:58
Jo
I tend not to, but um watched a bit of YouTube and saw about them Kyle Walker. Sorry, my mind went blank a second. Kyle Walker going to Everton on a one-year deal, apparently.
00:04:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I'd heard about... We're scraping the barrel.
00:04:10
Jo
So that's the most solid kind of transfer news I've heard today, I'll be honest.
00:04:16
Jo
We are desperate, desperate for something to talk about.
00:04:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
We are scraping the barrel here. Yeah, in the transfer debris. Apparently, i have have been watching one or two, and the bids, the bids and the signing is at the very end of the process, of course, and I'm being assured by all sorts of journalists who are allegedly in the know,
00:04:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
that discussions are taking place. So we know that we talked to Galap, for example, and we know that we've been talking to Alanga. So these discussions probably are going in place.
00:04:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I'm kind of hopeful that all of the best signatures that we've had since the takeover have come out of the blue, really.

Newcastle's Surprise Signing Strategy

00:05:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
They've not been mooted in the press for a fortnight, and then it finally takes place, you know.
00:05:02
Jo
Yep.
00:05:08
Jo
Mm-hmm.
00:05:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Isak was suddenly there. Bruno was suddenly there. Botman was suddenly there. um So, Tonali, yes.
00:05:16
Jo
Genali. Yep.
00:05:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, thought they thought they were going after Barella, didn't they?
00:05:21
Jo
Mm hmm.
00:05:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
And suddenly it was Tonali that was here. So, let's hope we're doing it even better than we have to, because we're getting better at doing that.
00:05:24
Jo
Yeah.
00:05:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
And there are there are some world-class players about here.
00:05:31
Jo
Counting on it.
00:05:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
to suddenly be announced that they've joined Newcastle and nobody's even talked about them because they they didn't know that they were available.
00:05:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
and So a trumpeted version, Joanne, of Transfer News is Transfer Non-News, isn't it really? But if we are going to try and have something every day, then we will be we be we'll be here to flash it up as soon as it starts moving. um And one thing I've been thinking about if Villa needs to sort PSR out and Burnley need to sort PSR out before the end of June, which is just next week, to be honest, then that might be when James Trafford is done.
00:05:42
Jo
True.
00:06:15
Jo
Yep.
00:06:17
Jo
Mm-hmm.
00:06:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
And don't know why I'd be facking around looking for Jacob Ramsey. I think we should go after Conver. I think he'd be a great set of halves.
00:06:28
Jo
Yeah. Oh, agree.
00:06:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
Let's do that. Are you listening, Eddie? Let's do that. and So maybe we've got a few days of quiet and then we will start seeing trying to move in for the kill and take advantage of some of the teams the way that we got benched over and had our bottomless back when we lost Minter and Anderson last year.
00:06:52
Jo
True.
00:06:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
Let's have a word from Ken. We've got two other very topical things to discuss.

Interest in Under-21 Championships

00:07:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
Neither of which have got much to say about, but we'll make it funny anyway, Joanne.
00:07:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Here we
00:07:05
Jo
I
00:07:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
We're back for part two, which chair I'm going to ask you, are you following? Are you following the under 21 and under 19 championships at the moment, Joanne?
00:07:55
Jo
um the under 21 a bit yes not the under 19 i won't lie i've i've done what is going on in that one at all um the under 21 i've always felt quite interesting if honest because in the past it's actually been more interesting sometimes than the senior in newton squad um and success wise they've got a lot more success as well so uh
00:08:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
That that that is an England team that can win win it tournament, isn't it?
00:08:18
Jo
Exactly that, yeah.
00:08:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
The Under-21.
00:08:19
Jo
So the the kids are quite excited, but what I find interesting is these kids become senior players and then it doesn't kind of follow through onto the senior kind of level.
00:08:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
and
00:08:26
Jo
But one day, one day we can hope that football will come home and that song that's been played to death for 40 odd years might actually be right. Or we can just have the world take the pee out of us forever because, let's get real, I think they love doing that.
00:08:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:08:40
Jo
Yeah.
00:08:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, the reason I wanted to flag them up is that I am mightily encouraged but i by the continued wonderful performances ah of a couple of Newcastle players in the Under-21 Championship.
00:08:54
Jo
Mm-hmm.
00:08:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Tino Livramento, part of the team that won its quarter-finals 3-1 last night against Spain, I think.
00:09:02
Jo
Mm-hmm.
00:09:05
Jo
Mm-hmm.
00:09:07
Jo
Played the whole game, didn't he?
00:09:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
And he played the whole game.
00:09:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
And he kept popping up at the byline on the right-hand side. So he can do it on the right. He doesn't have to just fill in Fully with Hall and do it all down the left.
00:09:11
Jo
Mm-hmm.
00:09:18
Jo
Mm-hmm.
00:09:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
He can do it on the right as well. um But yeah, he seems to be coming on in leaps and bounds. And I think if it's true that Guardiola wants him for Manchester City, I think that's an endorsement of how good this guy is becoming.
00:09:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
Although I did see that Tino had been... constantly in touch with Eddie Howe and being encouraged just to play his game and not be distracted by anything from outside which is what he said he's doing good old Tino I don't think he wants to show the manager does he he's made
00:09:48
Jo
Yeah.
00:09:55
Jo
I don't think he does, but it might be out of his control. Imagine if a huge, huge big comes in from Man City. um that It's I know the players have got some say, the agents. Everyone wants to step in with their bit, but if the right offer comes in, I don't want him to leave it any shape or form, by the way. I don't like these rumours about him being linked with Man City because I think it's a player that we really need to keep a hold of.
00:10:16
Jo
We're talking about building for the future. ah don't want us to have to keep selling our stars. He is one of our stars, isn't he? He's like Lewis Hall.
00:10:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Absolutely.
00:10:24
Jo
I'd be devastated if we lost him as well, so...
00:10:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, encouraging that even in the dark days of last summer, when we really were up against it, we didn't end up having to sell an Anthony Gawson or a Bruno de Maris in order to get out of trouble.
00:10:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah So we resisted that right up until the very final moment when they the sacrifice of Anderson and Minstead saved us. And we're not in that position anymore apparently, we're going to have to
00:10:53
Jo
Nope.

Young Talent at Newcastle

00:10:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
sell.
00:10:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I would hope that would mean that we would hang on to all of them.
00:10:58
Jo
I know I'm tempted to watch it really because he's been that brilliant hasn't he
00:10:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
and As well as the Rimento, Oshula continues to sign for Denmark. I think they played tonight in their quarter final.
00:11:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
but
00:11:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, he's excellent. He's excellent. And I'm hoping that, you know, do we need another striker if Ocelor is, er... If Ocelor's that, I mean, he's just so different.
00:11:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
But he could back up.
00:11:26
Jo
he is
00:11:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
He could back up the exact. Do you think we used to bring Callum Wilson on for the last 20 minutes when we were already two or three a ahead?
00:11:30
Jo
Yeah. Yeah.
00:11:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
Ocelor could do that.
00:11:35
Jo
yeah
00:11:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
Standing on his head, he'd probably score some goals as well.
00:11:39
Jo
especially the energy he's got. He can run circles around a tired team if you think about it. And I read something the other day he was talking about how to give him the minutes, he'll prove what he can do. So you can tell he's absolutely chomping at the bit to get going with us.
00:11:51
Jo
and And I know what Eddie's doing. I know he's not trying to rush him in. and He did the same thing with Bruno. He's done it across the line multiple times. So I get what Eddie's doing. it's It's his style. But I don't think Stryker is an absolute desperate position we need to fill.
00:12:05
Jo
I'd rather concentrate on other areas. Um... How they feel about that, I don't know. Or what type of player they bring in. As a backup striker, it's different. Because if it's a backup striker that can also play across different positions, then fantastic.
00:12:18
Jo
But solely a striker, I don't think it's an absolute emergency, personally, because of the fact that we've got a Sula, I'll be honest.
00:12:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
well i thinkt Well, I agree with you. And I'm hoping, as I say, I'm hoping that there are are a number of signs that the young lads are going to take a more forward step in the team this year.
00:12:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
And if they do, do we need all of these new signings? Because there were three new contracts as well for Sahar at right back.
00:12:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
maybe there's no replacement needed when Scipia retires, he's just stepped in and under for the you know, and for the washing machine man himself, Danussi got a car new contract and still leaves, who's got a Carabao Cup winner's medal, although he's never spent a second on the pitch competitively for Newcastle, but
00:12:49
Jo
Yep.
00:13:03
Jo
Yep.
00:13:07
Jo
This is crazy.
00:13:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, this is all good. I mean, he's a striker. He's a striker that could be, you know, covering if Oslo has to come on and cover the right wing. um And the last guy was going mention was the new signing that we've got, apparently pinched from under the noses of Barcelona and Real Madrid, Cordova.
00:13:30
Jo
yeah
00:13:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
He is signing for the main under-19 team scored in the last week. I'm not watching those games. I'm just following them. in words really but i think it's all really encouraging um that was a very good piece of work whoever spotted and convinced him to come um so yeah so under the kids the kids are coming through which is all very encouraging now
00:13:41
Jo
yeah yeah.
00:13:51
Jo
yep
00:14:00
Jo
Yeah.

Club World Cup Critique

00:14:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
possibly of more importance you'd think if you read about it it was the most important competition in football the club world cup joanne it's and venues apa it continues it continues the pace and oh it's weird because it's not a waste of time it's not irrelevant because the winners apparently
00:14:12
Jo
Oh, it's it's been riveting.
00:14:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
get £120 million. pounds So if Man fit my City you win it, then maybe they can have Liverpool and Arsenal because that's just like a bonus that comes.
00:14:29
Jo
That's insane, man.
00:14:38
Jo
Please God know then, right?
00:14:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
and The teams were selected via some weird coefficient which which means somehow that City and Celtic can be playing there but Liverpool and Arsenal don't get a look in.
00:14:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
Don't understand that myself. and
00:14:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
But it never watch ah I've watched little bits and pieces of it. The European teams have exhausted them. Chelsea got 3-1 by Cordova, was it?
00:15:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
There have been some weird results. Real Madrid limped to a one-all draw against one of the yeah Saudi teams in their first game. But it's not riveting and it's also not riveting in America because they're playing ah playing in international stadiums
00:15:19
Jo
No.
00:15:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
in front of nationally sized crowds. and What's the point of it all? Where is it going?
00:15:39
Jo
I think they built this thing up to be such a huge, huge event that everyone was going to be interested. America was going to get on where all the stadiums were going to be full. Like you say, America's got some huge, huge stadiums.
00:15:52
Jo
So they're playing these games, expecting these huge crowds. And it makes it even worse that hardly anyone's rocked up. um The results are a joke. Some of the results are just nuts anyway. Bayern Munich are just over there having a laugh.
00:16:05
Jo
um I haven't watched a single second of it, by the way, because I'm totally not interested in it. The only information I know is what news I've been reading. so obviously I've sold pictures of, I would like to say, half-empty stadiums.
00:16:16
Jo
They're not even half-empty because they're not even half-full, obviously.
00:16:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
no
00:16:19
Jo
it's It's turned into a massive mess-up. So the fact that the winner's going to get £120 million when the revenue generated from it's got to be, minuscule in comparison to what they were expecting is what I would say because if they've obviously went out thinking that all these fans are going to come in America and America's so excited about it America obviously couldn't give a damn about it the way that it's looking I'll be honest you've got some fans that may want to go along and see some teams that they'll never get to see in life and that's purely what's happening there but otherwise I don't think they give a hoot I'll be honest and that's put it nicely
00:16:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think part of it, I think part of the problem is not blame the American footballing public. It's because they've got, I think, the four games a day, different parts of the country, and they're scheduled.
00:17:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
They're scheduled so that you can watch each one of them. There's no frackers, which means that they're kicking off on a Tuesday at three o'clock in the afternoon, for example.
00:17:08
Jo
Yeah.
00:17:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
And America is not a place where people take random holidays. where people can take a half day or just have that afternoon off to go to the footy and make it up in, you know, in loo time.
00:17:22
Jo
Very different. Yeah.
00:17:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
Don't do that. I think some of the times that they've scheduled some of the matches, they were never going to have a chance of a big crowd.
00:17:31
Jo
Hmm.
00:17:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
and So do you think it's going to get any more interesting once we get through the torturous group stages and into some sort of knockout competition? I mean,
00:17:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
PSG played Athletic Code, didn't there? That was one of the early games. That should have been interesting.
00:17:55
Jo
Well, there has been some so-called big games, but...
00:17:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
I wanted to see it.
00:17:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
No.
00:17:59
Jo
Like you say, I think the timings of the games have got a lot to do with it. appreciate that. And it'll be interesting to see, should in the knockout stages where the games will be at better times, let's say, whether the crowds will get bigger or whether it they'll just get bigger because in the knockout stages, obviously, there will be more bigger teams playing bigger teams, if you know, again.
00:18:17
Jo
But... I'm not going to lie. I find it really hard to comment on will the quality be any better or will it actually be any more entertaining because, like I say, I haven't watched a single minute of it. So it's tough for me to say that. And I probably won't. i'm I'll be honest. I am so just not interested in it. I'm not going to lie. My focus at the minute, right, is the season starting. And if honest, the Seller Cup weekend, I'm trying to just get through to that weekend, right?
00:18:42
Jo
And then football's back for me. To me, football just isn't happening right now.
00:18:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, let's see the other part of it.
00:18:46
Jo
I'll be honest.

Closing Remarks and Social Media Engagement

00:18:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
Giddy got Newcastle back on the 7th of July, which is two weeks away. But I don't think this isn't even finished in two weeks.
00:18:55
Jo
Yeah.
00:18:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
So what is Chelsea doing? Are they just working through? Are they just on Red Bull and speed to be able to get through the mix the next season?
00:19:04
Jo
Yeah. Just never having a day off yet.
00:19:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
They're not going to have any break at all.
00:19:08
Jo
Yeah.
00:19:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Or they are going to have a break, but they're going to come back two or three weeks behind the rest of the Premier League.
00:19:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
Would that be all right? Because it'd be Man City and Chelsea who are hampered by that, and that's their own choice, isn't it?
00:19:16
Jo
Yeah.
00:19:20
Jo
Fine. True.
00:19:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Yeah, I think I can understand why they want to have a competition like this, but I think the timing of it means that half hour.
00:19:32
Jo
Yeah, agree.
