Ian Mackay's Solo Episode

00:00:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome to the Daily Newcastle. Proud to be part of the Global Sports Podcast Network. My name is Ian Mackay. I'm here on my own tonight.
00:00:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
Sadly, after all of that fun and games with Kev and Joe and Nicola yesterday, nobody is available to join me to pick the bones out of what has been quite a busy day, actually.
00:00:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And it's only because it has been busy that... We have to do a podcast tonight to to record what's going on. um Because if we were doing it about how good we're feeling about ourselves, we probably wouldn't bother. it But look, you've got to make your own mind up, haven't you?

Pre-season Friendly in South Korea

00:00:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm going to start in the first part by reviewing our third pre-season friendly, a which was played today in South Korea against a K-League All-Stars team.
00:01:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't know who they are either. um But it resulted another single goal defeat without a scoring. We lost 1-0. It
00:01:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
let's it was very odd. It looks like a game that they didn't really have planned. I know they did have it planned. We knew months ago. But I know they'll be waiting for the game on the weekend against Tottenham.
00:01:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
And a lot of the first team players will have been getting saved for that. So today's team looked a little bit makeshift. and and played just like that as well.
00:01:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, there are lots of really good reasons why we didn't perform very well. it was so super humid, it was really, really hot. The pitch apparently was a patchwork of scorched turf, very hard, very bumpy, but really, but really somebody should have shown a little bit more than any of them were able to show over the course of that of that game.

Sung Soo Park's Promising Debut

00:02:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
um struggling to remember a shot on target that we had. and We didn't seem to create very much. One or two of the players, because they're good players, showed flashes of of their skill, but then let themselves down by, you know, Alanga was fast and tricky, and then would put a cross that ballooned out of play 30 yards too high.
00:02:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
and Gordon would make a little run, And there'd be ah a cute ball played through for him. But Gordon then looked like he wasn't expecting the cute ball and it would roll out harmlessly for a goal kick.
00:02:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
Azula huffed and puffed. Didn't really look threatening at all. He'd gotten front of his man once and headed the ball against him.
00:03:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
Not sure it would have gone on target anyway. it was so It was a depressing game to watch. ah Lifted in the last 10 minutes. um mr I record this because it was actually quite exciting when he came on.
00:03:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
and Newcastle gave a debut to Sung Soo Park, South Korean Young Player of the Year that we have signed. Probably destined for a season in the under-18s.
00:03:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
But of course, in Korea, he came on because the Korean crowd loved him. And actually, when he came on, he He showed that he could tear take her on a full-back and go past him and even try and get a few crosses in.
00:03:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
He looked really good. So there's a little bit of positive news from that game. Didn't affect the results, of course.

Joe Willock's Injury Woes

00:03:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
We went right the way through to injury time almost when Joe Willock went over looking like he had broken his ankle.
00:03:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
And although the news is not that bad afterwards, ah Joe Willock is injured. Not a serious serious injury. Just a serious injury. We have no idea how long we have for.
00:04:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
But. That leaves us with four. Midfielders with first team experience. In the whole squad. and We were looking for a replacement for.
00:04:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
Anderson and a replacement for Longstaff. I think. Already. We are hoping to sell Willett. If we needed to. ah But now.
00:04:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
It appears that he's going to have some time out on the sidelines. um a little bit like Botman after the Arsenal game limped off. But apparently he was all smiles today. He didn't play.
00:04:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
But hopefully we'll see him on weekend against Tottenham. Apparently his injury is not ah causing him and he to lose any sleep. So it's ah it's hard to know what else to say about this.
00:05:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
We were dire. It was super hot. The pitch wasn't good. Willett got cropped. Unknown 18-year-old Korean boy, the only one who gives you any excitement.
00:05:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
And
00:05:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
that's it. Very short first half for that game, but I'm not going to spend any more time on it. I wasted enough time watching it. It was truly, truly awful. Hoping that they're saving themselves for a game against Tottenham when Maybe we'll even threaten to win a game. I don't know.
00:05:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm going to play ah early bionic advert because there's tons going on in the transfer window and we've got to record this. I'll see you in part two.
00:06:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
We will, Ken. at Part two. And where to start?

Transfer Market Movements

00:06:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
Where to start? Well, this time yesterday, i think we were quite excited um that it looked as if we were going to meet Leipzig's terms to be able to buy Benjamin Sesco.
00:06:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
We said we could afford his wages. and We said we'd pay really whatever fee we got asked for. It was going to be a club record. um And it was looking quite good that we would have Benjamin Sesco coming in Wisser as backup to replace Wilson up front, thereby allowing us to get rid of the bad apple, Alex Izak.
00:07:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
Is he a bad apple? i'm not sure. A little bit of news coming about that in a bit. um unfortunately um news came out this afternoon it's not official it's not officially declared yet and I've waited I'm looking this tired and dishevelled because I've sat up till 11 o'clock in the hope that there would be an update but news came out from various sources that Sesco was favouring a move to Manchester United yes and they've already done that to us with Waymo but Sesco favouring a move to Manchester United rather than
00:07:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
coming and taking the number nine shirt for Newcastle um which is very disappointing um it's still ongoing I'm sure we'll be making a really big play um
00:07:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
fingers crossed we can reverse what he's thinking um because not only have we look like we might be missing out on Sesco but Wisser At Brentford, who was Cullen Wilson's replacement, and is actually really keen on a move to Newcastle, but Brentford aren't keen on letting him go.
00:08:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Whatever fee they get, and they look as if they're going to play the card, or they're trying to play the card that we would be trying to play the card with Isaac, and it's really, really hard to reconcile how we can be all affronted by not ah by Liverpool demanding that we let Isaac go because he wants to go.
00:08:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
And they're going to meet whatever fee we ask. and And then think it's totally fine for us to do exactly the same to Brentford ah in in terms of Wyssa, which is, I think, what's happening. Wyssa's come away from the tour.
00:08:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Apparently he's going to turn up to training tomorrow, but not actually train. So he's told them. ah It's the same situation, I think. um Last week, I said before all of this news broke that I was of the mind to let Isaac go, take the money and rebuild the team in a way that Liverpool had done 10 years ago, was it, with Coutinho?
00:09:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
um um really, really think that we ought to do that. Now, if we do sell Isaac first and we have all of this cash landing in let's say modestly, Liverpool put £135 million and we accept it.
00:09:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
Everybody else knows that we have got a load of money to spend and we will end up getting overcharged. and Is that really a thing, though? Do they not already know when we're shopping for strikers?
00:09:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's so we can sell EZAC and get all of this cash in. I don't think it's a thing. ah think we should get on with it. um Maybe it's not Sesco and that would be disappointing.
00:10:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
But, so you know, Wissler is still there. Hopefully, in a way Liverpool can hang about and wait for us to release Izak, we can hang about and wait for Brentford to release Wissar.
00:10:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
and ah i have heard a lot of talk today about how Izak's got three years left on his contract. and We should just hang on to him and say, look, give us another year.
00:10:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Rather like Tottenham did with Harry Kane, and supposedly, a few years ago. But sam i don't think... I don't think Isak is in the same position as Harry Kane was in.
00:10:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
Word coming out this evening from, um
00:10:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
as reported by Mark Goldbridge, by the way, so I've even sat and watched that to try and find news, um as reported by Chris Woff and George Culkin, who are some serious journalists but the north with a Newcastle bias, Isak apparently told Newcastle mid-season last year, that that was his last season at Newcastle, that he wanted to move on at the end of the season.
00:11:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
He wanted to go and win things. His career is only short. We did hear Eddie say that a few weeks ago, so it's starting to stack up. And if that's the case, why on earth are we in this situation now?
00:11:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
Why on earth can we not just accept the reality of the fact that Isaac doesn't want to play for us, wants to go to Liverpool, Should have been Liverpool's first signing. We'd have had all of that cash.
00:11:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
That would have been different negotiations for Jao Pedro, for Mbwemo, for all of them. Because, ah you know, I think we're outbid. We're outbid by Chelsea for both De Laat and Jao Pedro.
00:11:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Couldn't afford the wages that Man United could offer for Mbwemo. Um...

Striker Search Continues

00:12:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
And of course Liverpool wouldn't have gone and bought Ekertike if they'd already bought Isak. Well, they might have done.
00:12:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
But we could have gone in and got Ekertike without Liverpool stepping in. So I think we've really badly played this Alexander-Isak situation.
00:12:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
If Isak has told them, and let's be honest, it formed it dipped. If he told them after the Carabao Cup final, for example, that's why he was pretty rubbish in the last 10 or 11 games of the season.
00:12:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
You know, it does stack up. And if we knew he was going and we know the reality of the football world, that it's all powers with the players, I think we should have embraced it. Anyway, it's 2020 hindsight, isn't it? We can't.
00:12:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
What we need to do is move him on quickly, I think. Let's get something in to start exciting us. Because without EZAC going,
00:12:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
the truth of it is, I don't think we're in a worse position than we were last year. We finished in the Champions League places last year. i know we've sold Sean Longstaff and we've lost the Croc, Callum Wilson, who never played for us.
00:13:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
But we've brought El Anger in. So to me, feels a little bit like the quid pro quo. And we're at least as good as we were last year.
00:13:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
But we're still with... I don't know, 250 million with the e-z exact money to spend. So let's not be down about it. There's still five weeks left in this window. i know the Premier League kicks off in three, two and a half.
00:13:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
But yeah, we've just got to keep going. And if it isn't Sesco, still might be, still might be, still might be. if it's not Sesco, there are plenty of strikers out there who will be able to come in and do us a bit of a job.
00:13:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Um,
00:13:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm going to pause there and read you the Zencaster advert because I do have news in part three of an actual arrival. Yeah, yeah, a signing.
00:14:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
And also some insight potentially from Craig Hope of the Daily Mail into who the strikers i that are left on Newcastle's shortlist, which clearly was quite a long list.
00:14:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
because we're already working down to numbers 7, 8 and 9 here. Anyway, see you in part three.

00:15:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Keith Downey, bless him, still very, very resentful at the start of each of his podcast YouTube videos about not being sent to South Korea to cover the Newcastle tour by Sky and filmed usually sitting in his garden in the North East was actually at Newcastle Airport this afternoon peering over the bins to get a video of Aaron Ramsdale to step off this private jet en route to St James' is i'm sorry en route to the Benton Trading Ground for a medical.
00:15:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
and This is a replacement for the James Trafford goalkeeper deal that we missed out on. Did we miss out on it? Everybody must have known Man City he had a buyback clause.
00:15:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
Anyway He's not coming to see to us. um yeah Instead, we've organised with Southampton to pay a £4 million loan fee to have Aaron Ramsdale for the season.
00:16:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Now, it's not inspiring. It's not like signing a Sesco or an Eckert TK for that matter. and But Ramsdale's a good keeper. Ramsdale was, I remember Ramsdale being the Arsenal keeper when they finished second a year or two ago.
00:16:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
and well teta had brought riah in and everyone wondered why have you bothered doing that you've already got a great goalkeeper he's played five times for england um eddie howe knows him really well having had him at bournemouth when he was an 18 year old uh so he's obviously knows the character and thinks he'll be a good guy in the in the chain in the changing rooms um
00:16:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's odd. We have so many goalkeepers, but actually Ramsdale is one who I think can put some pressure on Nick Pope for the number of one spot.
00:17:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
And he is hoping that he does. i think he's better with his feet than Pope is. Pope's probably a better shot stopper, but Ramsdale's no slouch at that either. So I think, yeah, two indian England internationals fighting for the goalkeeper jersey.
00:17:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
That should give us the depth that we need for an upper echelon Premier League and Champions League campaign. So I'm pleased with that. The beauty of a £4 million loan deal with an option to buy at the end is if he's rubbish, we can just send him back at the end of the season. and If he's good, we can buy him for whatever that agreed price is. Apparently he's got a £25 million release clause, so we'd probably get him for about £20 million next year after having paid £4 million and loan fee.
00:17:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
And we've only spent £4 million in this year's PSR, not the £40 million that we were apparently going to have to go to to sign James Trafford. So all of that money is still in the pot for any striker, any striker who shows willing to travel up the A1 to Newcastle from wherever they are and sign on the dotted line.
00:18:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
Jan Wisser, he's one he's coming. yeah He wants to come. um Craig Hope revealed some new um interest.
00:18:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
We started talking. What did they say? Contact has been made with Moonies representatives. Moonies at Fulham. He's on what's left of the list.

Striker Options: Mooney, Watkins, Jackson

00:18:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
Ollie Watkins at Winston Villa is also on the list, although at 29 knocking on 30. He sounds like a fairly short-term replacement, but a great striker, Premier League proven, scores goals every season.
00:18:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Further down that list is Nicholas Jackson,
00:19:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
who's still very raw. Shall we say he's still very raw at Chelsea? and And maybe Eddie could improve him so that he could become Newcastle's number nine.
00:19:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
um I think he's he's a very... hard worker and a very busy player but we won't forget him elbowing Sven Bottman and getting sent off in that critical Chelsea game and two or three games from the end of the season didn't actually have any impact in the end but it could easily have done he was suspended for the last three games of the season um I'm not a big fan of Jackson let's be honest he he's notoriously poor at finishing however hard he works
00:19:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Who else have I heard? Those three are actually on a list, according to Craig Hope, along with Whissa. And if we had two of them, we'd be okay.
00:20:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
It wouldn't be spectacular. We'd be okay. I still don't know why we don't try for Darwin Nunes, who is a beast. He's super fast, and he just needs an arm around him and a little bit of confidence, I think, to turn into...
00:20:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
a killer Premier League striker. at Liverpool have already given up on him. I'm not sure having the Diaz and Salah as the wingers that like to cut in and shoot with the wrong foot is the best form of service that you could give to Nunes.
00:20:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's always been played really, really well when I've seen him in the flesh. and And it would be somebody who would come in. If the Joe Willock's injury, we need a midfielder as well. I keep going back to what is wrong...
00:20:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
with swapping Isaac for a little bit of cash and Darwin Nunes and Harvey Elliott. It's bringing players into the squad, which is what we need. What we don't need is 250 million in the bank on September the 1st and an 18 man squad will do nobody any good whatsoever.
00:21:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
and I've also seen linked variously ah Strand Larson at Wolves, who...

Transfer Market Challenges

00:21:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't know if it's just because he's baby faced, he still looks very young. He did all right last year.
00:21:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
Quite like him. I couldn't pick him above or below Moonies. I would put him above Jackson. I'd put him below Watkins. But a you all watch the Premier League the same way I do.
00:21:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
and And we will have our little favourites and non-favourites. I quite like Strand Larson. um I don't know if there's any interest there or if you're willing to go.
00:21:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
i did read somewhere that we were interested. um But I think we might get to the point where it is anyone who is available within reason we will be interested, which is sad because I still think that there must be a lot of scope to go into Europe, work our way through Steve Nixon's little black book and try and pick up ah striker equivalent of...
00:22:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
a Bruno or a Botman in the way that he had Eckertighe on that list three years ago must have some more little gems come on Steve get your little black book out that's probably it there are rumours by the way now we've signed Ramsdale that Manchester United might be coming in for Nick Pope as a goalkeeper, which would be quite interesting, because then at least Nick Pope would be playing with Benjamin Sesco next year, if it goes that way.
00:22:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
But look, let's not get too down, because we haven't been rejected by Benjamin Sesco yet. um We'll save all of that disappointment for tomorrow, and we'll discuss it all tomorrow morning.
00:23:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thanks very much for listening. I've been Ian Mackay trying to stay upbeat in god awful run of results. That's five defeats in a row if you count in the last two games of last season.
00:23:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
Plus three friendlies in pre-season. um And with news of other ah people rejecting us again.
00:23:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
honest Honestly. If I always said yeah I'll be checking his breath. Something's up. We'll see you tomorrow.
