Podcast Re-recording Dilemma

00:00:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome back to the Daily Newcastle podcast. My name is Michael Grahamslaw and today I am joined by Ian Mackay. How's it going, buddy?
00:00:19
Iain
It's going

Newcastle's Pre-Season Struggles

00:00:20
Iain
good, Michael. I am up, which is something that Newcastle haven't managed to throughout the entirety of pre-season, but never mind, I'm still up.
00:00:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm surprised by that because just a little bit of context for everyone.
00:00:35
Iain
and the
00:00:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
i completely ruined everything this evening and there we're having to record this for the second time after already doing this podcast once and getting about 35 minutes in. So um prepare yourself for a much more ah distinguished conversation because we already know what the other is going to say.
00:00:55
Iain
It's to be punchy, punchy, punchy.
00:00:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Absolutely, and surprisingly my voice has held up.
00:00:58
Iain
and
00:01:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
As you remember yesterday I sounded terrible, but now I'm feeling a little bit better. So we're going to talk about pre-season as a whole, starting with the Cellar Cup this weekend. Ian, you covered the Friday night, I covered the Saturday, but how has the weekend left you feeling? you feeling a bit more buoyant than what you're used to?

Player Evaluations and Highlights

00:01:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
Or what we're used to, should I say?
00:01:20
Iain
given Yes, i well, given that we've played six games, and like I say, we've never gone ahead in any of them. We have not been ahead yet this year.
00:01:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh, yeah.
00:01:28
Iain
um I'm quite... so I am quite pleased. I think that K-League game...
00:01:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh, we were.
00:01:35
Iain
Oh,
00:01:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
Sorry, I'm going to correct you. We were. Espanol, 2-1. For 10 minutes.
00:01:39
Iain
you're right. Yeah, we were 2-1 history.
00:01:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
The boys are back.
00:01:43
Iain
Sorry, we have been up once. and
00:01:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
All the difference.
00:01:47
Iain
i I get that. Yeah. Yeah, other than the K-League game, I think we played well against Arsenal. We played well against Tottenham. I thought, given it was a makeshift team, Matt Target holding together as a creative midfielder against Espanyol, we did okay in that game as well.
00:01:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Agreed.
00:02:05
Iain
Should have won it, really.
00:02:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:02:07
Iain
Last-minute equaliser. um And then for the first hour yesterday, i was i was really encouraged as well. So I am thinking that fitness is coming, that the the touch is there or it's coming.

Hope in Resilience and Development

00:02:23
Iain
um So yeah, I'm feeling probably more buoyant than I ought to, given that we haven't beaten anybody other than Carlisle United in a behind-closed-doors friendly.
00:02:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah Kyle won the weekend, 2-0 win against, I believe it was Wogan. So it's a much better result than we'd all imagine. Obviously not, I'm joking. But it was only a late equaliser that fought were on Friday.
00:02:45
Iain
Yeah, well, this is the first the first year for... First year for many years that you have to call them non-league Carlisle as well, of course.
00:02:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. Yeah, it's ah it's a tough one. Bad season for them, but I'm sure they'll bounce back, which we're going to do as well after a pretty poor pre-season.
00:03:02
Iain
Excellent.
00:03:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
um But only a late equaliser thwarted us on Friday by a former Middlesbrough striker. I'm sure they loved that. and But for the game of the game as a whole, I actually recognised that Lewis Miley's movement was so much better than we've seen in recent times.

Emerging Talents and Their Impact

00:03:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's lot more agile. And you were saying when we first um recorded the pod, him and Bruno worked really well together. So yeah describe again what you saw.
00:03:29
Iain
Yeah, I thought that Miley was was definitely showing signs of not necessarily the Stanley Rodri. Okay, that might be over the top. But he was looking like the Stanley Tonali, buying himself lots of time to choose the right pass with a simple body move or turning away from ah a defender.
00:03:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh.
00:03:50
Iain
The way that Tonali seems to always have a little bit more time than anybody else in those tight situations.
00:03:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:03:56
Iain
Miley was doing that. He looked really assured. I put a should next to his name for the first half and the second half. So no sort of flash in the pan thing here.
00:04:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm-hmm.
00:04:07
Iain
Very, very encouraging performance from him.
00:04:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, 100%.
00:04:10
Iain
And he did play in tandem with with Bruno very, very well.
00:04:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think it's one of those where Bruno really works for someone who can rotate the six and the eight. Him and Tannoli do it fantastically. And it looks like Lewis Miley's fitting into that role as well, which it's going to be a big season for Miley, providing and he doesn't get another injury, that is.

Midfield Adaptability

00:04:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
um So definitely one that yeah he'll come off the bench and do that role fantastically, or might even start some games. But a player that we might actually see play a bit more from the bench this season. Park Sung-soo.
00:04:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
So, let's be honest, when he signed from Suwon Blue Wings, the Korean second division side, I think we're all a little bit in dismay seeing the teams around us sign players for about 100 million and then we're signing youngsters from the Korean second tier.
00:04:49
Iain
Yeah.
00:04:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
But... He looks so talented. Maybe not in the end product, but in regards to dribbling, he's looked fantastic. ah What do you think about him on Friday?
00:05:10
Iain
yeah
00:05:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
was he Was he as good as we're seeing in Korea?
00:05:11
Iain
a Well, we saw in Korea, didn't we, a couple of 15-minute performances and it's on his home pitch ah or is his home country, home conditions.
00:05:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:05:21
Iain
And he did look like he could go past a player because he did it several times. Now, at Newcastle on Friday night, he played for an hour and he played just as well. it's that it's too It was ah conditions obviously suited him.
00:05:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
so
00:05:35
Iain
I mean, it was quite was quite muggy on Newcastle on Friday night. it wasn't It
00:05:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah

Ashby's Rise Against Atletico

00:05:40
Iain
wasn't the 100% humidity that they get in Korea, of course.
00:05:43
Iain
But no, I thought he played he played pretty well, ah interchanging with...
00:05:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:05:50
Iain
It was odd. There seemed to be an extra player out there for a lot of the time because I know Target was playing midfield and kind of picking up a lot of the here his advanced left-back position, which is where Lewis Hall was.
00:06:03
Iain
um
00:06:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:06:04
Iain
But no, they that they interchanged all right. they were They were very encouraging, I would say, um given that you had Target in amongst the three. and they were connecting quite well. And is it Park Sung Soo or Sung Soo Park? I'm not sure.
00:06:21
Iain
al guy churned the Espanyol fullback in and out two or three times, went past with a body swerve and actually did put a few crosses over.
00:06:35
Iain
Of course, Willa Sula is watching it sail over his head as he turns thinking, oh God, I should have been over there, shouldn't I? and But, but But there was end product.
00:06:46
Iain
There wasn't anybody to finish off the end product.
00:06:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:06:49
Iain
But no, very encouraging.
00:06:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
Fair.
00:06:50
Iain
I hope he sticks around the first team and doesn't get shipped off to, I don't know, the modern epidemicals.
00:06:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Probably Holland again, no insola.

Ramsdale's Challenge for Starting Role

00:07:00
Iain
Oh, you yeah, were some hot some Dutch second division side. No, let's keep them.
00:07:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, a graveyard for young talent. That's where Shola sends players. But no, to be honest, we've seen some better loans, I think, this season. So maybe Shola's learning from his mistakes as well. But I definitely agree.
00:07:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
i would like to see Parks and Sue in the Newcastle side, um maybe coming off the bench, because it does look like he's one of those players that can cause a little bit of chaos when he comes on.
00:07:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Let's say we play Leeds United, third game of the season, we're 1-0 down, we're struggling to break them down.
00:07:31
Iain
Thank you.
00:07:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
You can bring on this tricky little winger who, let's be honest, they their scout report is going to read, Korean, played for Suwon Blue Wings, is quite tricky. That's about it.
00:07:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
No one else is going to know anything about him. It's a bit like that Sam Maximum effect when he first joined and everyone went... how is he doing 57 step overs and still getting past me?
00:07:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
um it It reminds me that kind player and it's it's exciting. It's something we've needed. um But you mentioned the Matt Target role against Espanyol and surprisingly it was Harrison Ashby who played the same role against Atletico Madrid.
00:08:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
How... I don't think it's something we're going to see quite often, but I actually thought both were impressive for them well for for to a degree. I actually thought Ashby was more impressive than Matt Target.
00:08:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
um But Target, he gave away the penalty,
00:08:27
Iain
Yeah.

Squad Depth and Player Roles

00:08:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
which was very stupid.
00:08:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
But first half, I thought Harrison Ashby had a ah great game. What do you think?
00:08:37
Iain
and Well, I can remember 20 minutes into that game, writing down Miley assists target to score with a header.
00:08:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah
00:08:46
Iain
That's probably never going to be written out again. but But no, Miley, as well as as well as doing his Tonali impression, ah Miley made the run and went past two players to then put a lovely cross in that target couldn't really miss.
00:08:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
No.
00:09:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:09:03
Iain
and But Ashby did the same, in exactly the same position as well.
00:09:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm-hmm.
00:09:07
Iain
when he when he made a really good run that Trippier found, and a very, very intelligent cutback with a a high ball that dropped for Joe Linton to score, should have been.
00:09:20
Iain
But I think that was the one that clipped the bar as it went over. t Poor old Joey. I mean, how many headers did he get in the first half?
00:09:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, he could have got a hat-trick.
00:09:29
Iain
I say he he could have stood still and the two of them should have bounced off his face and gone in, but he tried to direct all of them and therefore missed all of them. Sorry, Joey. He's not a centre-forward, is he and just on friday
00:09:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, definitely not.
00:09:42
Iain
Just on Friday, um i thought they were good in the first half. i've thought Ramsdale looked like a number one. He doesn't look like he's come to sit on the bench.
00:09:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
Not all.
00:09:51
Iain
He made one one penalty save, obviously, was was impressive. Looked so assured with the ball at his feet. He didn't do anything flashy. I think he tried one or

Improvement and Potential Impact

00:10:00
Iain
two of his trademark 80-yard passes that he didn't quite have his range for.
00:10:06
Iain
but at least he's still got that in his armoury, obviously. um
00:10:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah,
00:10:10
Iain
ah second half Second half, I thought um ah wrote down Asula. He's not a centre-forward. I think he's a right-winger. I think he's a right-winger.
00:10:21
Iain
I thought Byrne looked really solid, still and making a lot of effort and compensating for quite lethargic performances, I thought, from Shah and from Murphy.
00:10:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah I'd agree.
00:10:34
Iain
I don't think Murphy deserved to be the one who picked up the free gift goal that was actually won by Neve and Harrison pressing.
00:10:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
Harrison.
00:10:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:10:46
Iain
ah But murt Murphy got a goal out of it. I didn't think he was shown very much, to be fair. um But yeah, that's what I've got.
00:10:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I think, to be honest, I'd be inclined to agree.
00:10:56
Iain
That's what I've got.
00:10:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
Murphy's one of those players that he can do nothing all game and then he'll get the ball and just hit it and it'll go in the back of the net.
00:11:05
Iain
That's true.
00:11:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
um So it's it's one of those. It's about time someone else got the the little bit of luck. But he does seem to be in the right places at the right times, which is is is probably something you can say he's one of the only players in the squad who has that.
00:11:14
Iain
that's true
00:11:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
But one player I do want to speak about, he came on for Sven Botman. at half-time in game two. And it's Alex Murphy, who

Concerns Over Player Performances

00:11:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
personally I'm not... I personally don't really rate, but I know that you do.
00:11:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
um you see that You see there is a player in there. And to be honest, you know again at Bolton, I did see it, but I think he needs another season. But maybe um maybe I'm harsh because I'm judging him against games against Bakayo Saka, Alex Buena, Julian Alvarez, Anton Griezmann, Alexander Soloff.
00:11:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
There's about 300, 400 millions worth of players there and he costs us, what, 400 grand? um So, yeah, maybe I'm being a bit harsh, but you think there's a player in there, don't you?
00:11:58
Iain
Well
00:12:02
Iain
Well to be fair i mean that's that is a baptism of fire isn't it for this season but he's going to have to be able to play against the color of that calibre of player because it's not just the top one or two that have spent their fortunes on wingers you know you go right the way down the down through the
00:12:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:12:21
Iain
the the Premier League and there are some class players playing, and attacking players.
00:12:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
hundred percent
00:12:27
Iain
So, yeah, i I'm basing Alex Murphy on him looking good a couple of years ago. Now, I know the reports were good from Bolton. He scored a fabulous own goal against Arsenal. um i think there's I think there's a player in there. he He looks ah cent a centre-half and I have the concern that neither Bottman nor LaSalle will get to play more than half a dozen games each this season.
00:12:51
Iain
And even with a new centre-half coming in, I think it still leaves us short. So I'm hoping that Murphy can step up and do a job.
00:13:02
Iain
Do a job in in the Champions League games, in the Premier League.
00:13:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:13:07
Iain
and I don't want to see him playing 45 games this season, of course. But if he needs to come on and... and manage Botman's minutes for him, for example, I think he can do that.
00:13:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah

Do Pre-Season Results Matter?

00:13:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
To be honest, it's one of those where I probably am being harsh myself, um but it's one of those where ah there's very few youngsters, who particularly defenders, who look really good when they're first play.
00:13:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
It usually takes them... maybe five to ten appearances before you sit there and go, OK, there is a player in there. So if he does get that run in the team to maybe mid-season when we've got picked up a few injuries, you mentioned Bottman and LaSalle, both very injury prone.
00:13:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
If he does come in, gets five, ten games and looks solid, then ah i could be completely wrong.
00:13:50
Iain
Thank you.
00:13:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
and But we you know he is going to be one of those players. You can't judge someone, I guess, until they do have that run in the team. um So, yeah, I think there's definitely a chance there that he could grow and he could develop.
00:14:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
In fact, speaking of developing, we're going to go to our first advert of the day, and that is by Anique.
00:14:23
Iain
Thank you.
00:14:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
fun Fantastic.
00:14:55
Iain
And well done, Michael. I thought that brilliant link to the first advert about developing players and development was going to be lost. I would be the only person who heard that, but you managed to work it in the second time as well.
00:15:10
Iain
So it's recorded for everybody to appreciate.
00:15:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
What can I say?
00:15:13
Iain
And, you know, that's that's why we have Michael as the pro on the podcast.
00:15:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
My development comes from consistency.
00:15:21
Iain
Well done.
00:15:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah Thank you very much, Ian. ah So talking about professionals and development, we finally finished pre-season, which is where we sort of get an idea of how good players are going into the new campaign. We technically are without a win, if you don't include that Kyle behind closed doors game.
00:15:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Four defeats, two wins.
00:15:41
Iain
which we don't.
00:15:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, we definitely don't. um But there's been some encouraging performances. Are there any players that you've been

Potential Signings and Defensive Strength

00:15:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
particularly impressed with in pre-season?
00:15:53
Iain
I Anthony Gordon, chalk and cheese compared to the start of last year. he looks really, really hungry. and attacking and Attacking a centre-forward role with relish rather than trepidation, I think.
00:16:11
Iain
ah Whether he's effective doing it it was very effective at it is a different question.
00:16:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, these attitudes have been fantastic.
00:16:15
Iain
I'd far rather see him have that attitude and bomb down the left wing. But um I've been impressed with how he's put himself about. um
00:16:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
I agree.
00:16:26
Iain
Dan Byrne has just picked up where he left off last year, I think. He is Mr. Dependable. I'm really encouraged by what i saw of Ramsdale on his first game. He is going to push Nick Pope from... i mean, he might even have pushed Nick Pope to start against Villa.
00:16:43
Iain
That's how assured he seems.
00:16:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I'd agree.
00:16:46
Iain
But I was looking largely to see if there were any players coming through who could flesh out our rather threadbare squad if we are unable to redress the misses in the transfer market in this last three weeks.
00:17:02
Iain
And therefore, I've been quite pleased with Murphy, as we talked about in part one.
00:17:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:17:06
Iain
I thought Alfie Harrison came on, certainly against Espanyol, He was trying some... he was He looked confident in what he was trying. Didn't always come off, but you could see that there was a very thoughtful, creative player in Alfie Harrison.
00:17:23
Iain
ah
00:17:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:17:24
Iain
Sung Soo Park, as well, I think, is a bit of a discovery.
00:17:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:17:28
Iain
There's somebody who can stay there. And as we already mentioned, Lewis Miley's stepping up to do a Tonali impression, which would be fantastic. um If he can get anywhere near that level,
00:17:40
Iain
this season, then that will really, really help.
00:17:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:17:44
Iain
They've got to stay fit though. And again, Miley seems a little bit prone to injury.
00:17:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I'd agree.
00:17:54
Iain
Fingers crossed.
00:17:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think we've got a couple of players too many that are injury prone and
00:17:56
Iain
So.

Transfer Strategy and Squad Strengthening

00:17:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
maybe Miley just being young, still developing really.
00:18:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
Maybe it's the you know just that area of the game that makes him pick up a few injuries more than we'd maybe expect. um Or maybe it's just the fact we threw him in the deep end and made him play quite a lot two seasons ago and then he's gone from playing quite a lot to nothing at all and it's just find that consistency of oh I'm playing every week to now I'm not really playing at all so less contact is having more of an effect so it's one of those you see quite a lot at Barcelona if you look at their youngsters they're
00:18:16
Iain
i hope it's not there
00:18:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
their youngsters are now getting like in long-term injuries at the age of 20 because they're playing all the time and they're getting long-term injuries that rule them out because of that.
00:18:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
They're not fully developed players, but they're having to basically play a full-time football schedule at the age of 16, etc. So maybe it's not maybe it's not that for Miley.
00:18:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
um We are seeing that other youth academies around the world, but there's... From what I've seen, I completely agree with you about Lewis Miley being positive. ah He's one of the players that's really shown.
00:19:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
And i think in a Willock is still there. But for me, Willock's fifth choice now. um He's not impressed me at all. I know he's been injured. I'm talking over the last year.
00:19:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah But Lewis Miley looks a lot faster, looks a lot more agile.
00:19:25
Iain
oh
00:19:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
And it looks like bulking up has actually but finally been matched by that extra bit stamina, better agility.
00:19:33
Iain
yeah because see I think he's learned a lot playing with Tonali, training with training with Gumarish, and his work in the gym means he's built like Joe Linton now.
00:19:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
I agree, yeah.
00:19:43
Iain
So we have got fantastic, if he stays fit, I think we've got a fantastic midfield player on our hands. And I wouldn't be at all surprised if he wasn't
00:19:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm-hmm.
00:19:54
Iain
if he wasn't
00:19:56
Iain
as much of a first choice

Striker Options and Transfer Dynamics

00:19:57
Iain
as Joe Linton is during this season.
00:20:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
To be honest, I'd be inclined to agree. Joe Linton's another one who picks up a number of injuries. And if he picks up an injury early in the season, Miley comes in, replaces him. I could see Miley doing a brilliant job alongside Bruno and Tonali.
00:20:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
Because as you say, you look at Miley now and somebody's playing, you can tell he's learned off those two players.
00:20:15
Iain
Hmm.
00:20:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
So if you'll learn off those two players, you're modeling yourself off those two players. You play alongside them. You almost know what they're going to do. Um, Sure, Joel Linton would be a massive miss. Maybe he's one of the players that walks straight into the squad when he's fully fit.
00:20:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
um But Lewis Miley could definitely displace. It has to be Joel Linton because it can't be the other two in that midfield three. He's that good. um But we spoke about he's obviously the shining light alongside Park Sung-soo, I would say, pre-season.
00:20:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
Are there any players that you've been particularly disappointed with in pre-season? and Don't say all of them.
00:20:58
Iain
I don't think like it's his fault. I don't think it's his fault. But Willis Sula's not centre-forward demonstrated. I don't think he's a centre-forward.
00:21:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
I would agree.
00:21:09
Iain
I think he's a right-winger. I think he's lethal. His pace and his power ah to in the last half hour of a game coming in from the right and being able to have a good shot when he gets in between the posts.
00:21:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:21:22
Iain
So coming into the centre, I think that's that's where we need him.
00:21:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm-hmm.
00:21:27
Iain
But he's not centre-forward. He's willing runner. He's a great presser. I'm not sure he's... anticipation and reading the game is enough for him to be right on the money.
00:21:38
Iain
In a way, as we talked, that Wisser is always just there for the ball to bounce off his knee or his chest. or He's just always in exactly the right place to be able to put the ball away whatever part of the body he knocks it in with because he's got that instinct as to where it's going to fall.
00:21:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:21:55
Iain
Asula hasn't got it. um
00:21:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, definitely not.
00:21:58
Iain
Asula can beat a man and have a shot, as we saw against Bromley, but yeah, I don't think he's centre forward. So I've been disappointed with the lack of end product from what he's done.
00:22:10
Iain
and
00:22:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'd be great.
00:22:12
Iain
i don't know. um well No, you know, I'm assuming that the other guys who've been a bit nondescript, you know, I said that ah I was disappointed with Shah and Murphy and how lethargic they looked on Friday night, but it it's all about minutes in the

Complexities of the Transfer Market

00:22:26
Iain
legs, isn't it? And I'm sure there will be,
00:22:29
Iain
I'm sure they will be much more different when they when they come to be playing Aston Villa. It's six days away, my word.
00:22:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, it's an awful long at all until that big game to start the season, which feels weird that it's happened twice in three seasons. The two that are looking to disrupt the top six against each other, at least it's the reverse this time. We usually beat them at St. James's. They usually beat us at Villa Park.
00:22:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
we'll be hoping for difference this time round. But actually, some speaking of the other game against Aston Villa, someone that made their debut in that game was actually someone that probably disappointed me the most this pre-season.
00:23:01
Iain
If
00:23:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And it's annoying because just a few weeks ago, I said I thought he'd be the very best player of this pre-season and we'd see him have a fantastic campaign. And that was Harvey Barnes.
00:23:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
um He's one of those players that either gives you 10 out of 10 or he gives you a 4 out of 10 and
00:23:18
Iain
if
00:23:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
Spurs was close to that 10 out of 10, probably more of an 8 actually, um but he played very well and then every other game he's just just not been involved. ah Would you agree with that?
00:23:34
Iain
I think he was very good against Spurs, scored an excellent goal. I think it's a bit harsh to single them out, though, because, I mean, I said on Friday, i didn't think Murphy did very much.
00:23:46
Iain
um And that was his last game before, you know, that's his last pitch for selection for the first team.
00:23:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
True.
00:23:52
Iain
I didn't think Scha was there. Scha was a bit lackadaisical, gave the ball away. No
00:24:01
Iain
long-range passes much from him. ah I was disappointed with them, particularly in the second half. So, but yeah, i mean, Barnes did nothing yesterday, did he? When Alanga was tearing it up down the right wing, Gordon was looking hungry at centre forward and Barnes was sort of out on the left for a bit.
00:24:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah,
00:24:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah just kind of not involved in the game. And it's it's concerning that Harris and Ashby was actually involved in more good attacking moments than... Then Barnes and he was playing completely out of position.
00:24:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Barnes had a few times where he was isolated against the wing-backs, sometimes got past them, sometimes didn't. Mainly cut in and just passed the ball back. um So, yeah, I wasn't impressed with him against Atletico and I haven't really been for for most of this pre-season so far, unfortunately.
00:24:48
Iain
Thank you.
00:24:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
um But I think it's going to be one of those where you'll still have

Season Reflections and Goals

00:24:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
a good season, probably. You'll get with 10 goals, possibly five or six assists, 16 goal contributions. You can't complain.
00:25:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Definitely not. I mean, it's less than what I believe... Well, it's definitely less than what Murphy got last season and Alanga. um But if you've got that... in the locker, which Barnes does.
00:25:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's frustrating, but I think he'll have a ah good campaign. But we mentioned earlier, pre-season, we've not won a game. Do you think results matter, really, going into the season?
00:25:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
I remember Liverpool not winning a single pre-season game and then i think they got 97 points that season, just one behind Man City. But it's not something Newcastle have ever done. We've never failed to win anything.
00:25:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
a a well a pre-season game. So do you think it matters for us going into Aston Valero and Liverpool or do you think it'll be something that we can shrug off?
00:25:50
Iain
think there's a lot of tactical substitutions at half time because minutes are being managed for Bottman, for Hall, for other players.
00:25:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yes.
00:25:59
Iain
um So I think it's all about fitness in the legs. I think they picked us so ah as even the, even the Korean K league team pressed hard, ran hard in their conditions.
00:26:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
it is
00:26:13
Iain
I think they've picked some, you know, they went to play the Scottish champions for their final warmup game before their league kicked off. as their first pre-season game. That was always going to be really, really tough game.
00:26:26
Iain
So I think they have chosen their opposition
00:26:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:26:30
Iain
um to have some hard games. Tottenham and Arsenal, you know, where' where's the home game against Gateshead this year? So I'm not sure that not winning any of those games is a problem.
00:26:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's a good point.
00:26:46
Iain
I mean, we were beaten in the last minute by a penalty by Arsenal. We drew with Tottenham. We should have won. clawed back in the last minute by Espanyol. And I was really encouraged in the first hour against Atletico.
00:26:59
Iain
They finished third last year, another Champions League side.
00:27:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, fantastic.
00:27:03
Iain
And we could have been three or four goals ahead at halftime. We weren't. um And then they swapped their team entire team out and on the hour and that completely changed the flow of the game.
00:27:14
Iain
But, ah yeah, I think as long as they've got the fitness that they want, I'm encouraged by what I've seen.
00:27:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:27:21
Iain
and
00:27:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, you may you make a great point about the calibre of opposition, actually. There's not really any chance of, ah if Sammy scores or on the pitch at Gateshead, where we had the little pitch invasion during the 2-0 all that time ago, yeah we are playing the likes of, there's three Champions League teams in there and share the K-League It's disappointing because no one's ever failed to score against the K-League XI.
00:27:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
They've always conceded at least two. We didn't seem him up for it at all. um But I do completely agree. it's It's all about getting minutes in the legs, fitness up.
00:27:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
You mentioned pressing teams pressing us. you know Arsenal pressed us, Tottenham pressed us horrifically well, um horrifically for us, well for them, um in the in the first half, which led to their goal.
00:28:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then Atletico Madrid were exactly the same on Saturday. So playing those kind of teams, I think when you've got Villa first game of the season, It's a perfect tune-up.
00:28:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
You've just got to make sure you make a count. um But we'll go into the second part in a moment. We'll talk about our potential new signing, but we're going to go back to the old and reliable for now, as Ian gives us the advert from Zencastr.
00:28:36

00:29:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
Absolutely fantastic. Thank you very much, Ian. And I will just like to add, I did say old and reliable. It's old and reliable for us. they're actually They were founded in 2014. It doesn't stop them being reliable, but they're definitely not that old.
00:29:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
Although, happy 10 years to them last year.
00:29:21
Iain
Thank
00:29:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah But yes, on to the topic out at hand. Two first-team sign-ins. Bramsdale, Alanga, right winger, goalkeeper. um It looks likely that Malik Chau will be our third sign-in.
00:29:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's flying into Newcastle, well, as we were doing this podcast, um according to those in Italy. 40 million euros, a large amount, but definitely not the largest we've seen for a Premier League side signing a defender.
00:29:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah How do you feel about the sign-in?
00:29:52
Iain
i think it's I think it's very good. I think he's been on our list for a number of years. and ah certainly... He's a German international. He's been playing for AC Milan, Champions League experience.
00:30:06
Iain
and
00:30:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
no
00:30:07
Iain
Good pals with Sandro Tonali, apparently. and So, yeah, if he's been on a list for a while. We haven't made an offer on a centre-half yet this year. So if he's top of Eddie's list and we've got him, his first choice, I'm pleased...
00:30:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
know Absolutely.
00:30:22
Iain
His €40 million euros are not £70 million that Gay would have been last summer. and even if he's ah Even if he's a bit cheaper this year, we could have spent another four weeks chasing after him for Liverpool to nip in and steal him from us. So we've left him. We're learning.
00:30:39
Iain
We've gone after our man and we've brought him in in under a week. Let's hope they can do that with a midfielder and a and another striker, a younger striker.
00:30:50
Iain
that's not on everybody's list for the last two years, then we've got a chance of doing something fast.
00:30:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:30:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, and let's be honest, when we've been up against the big six for almost every signing we've tried to make. It feels like we've kind of just gone in and gone, oh you know what, we quite like him, we're going to make a bid.
00:31:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then every top six team that's had him scouted for about two years has gone, oh, can't let him go there. Let's put the bid in.
00:31:13
Iain
Hmm.
00:31:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And it doesn't seem like that's been the case with Malik Chau. It almost worries me that we've got him on a post almost. But he was going to Como um a month ago for €15 million euros cheaper.
00:31:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
um The reason behind that, ah he didn't end up at Como because he wanted Champions League football. um Finally something we can offer someone. But when Maximiliano Allegri took over,
00:31:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
um he took over basically said, i don't want this I don't want this player leaving my squad. He really likes him. And I'll tell you, I've seen a lot of people saying, oh, well, you know, 15 million euros more than what we could have paid.
00:31:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
We've been made out for fools. I'll tell you, if Allegri likes him and Eddie Howe likes him, then I don't mind if we pay 60 million for him. Because two managers of that quality, thinking you're a great addition to a Champions League squad,
00:32:00
Iain
um
00:32:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, um I'm very, very happy with that signing. And I saw a little bit more of him at Schalke than I have AC Milan, I'll be honest. So the quality of teams he's been up against has been a little bit worse in my head.
00:32:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
But he looked an excellent prospect then. um But I would like to say I also thought the same of Ozan Kabak, if people remember him from back in the day. He ah failed a loan spell at Liverpool, failed at Norwich and then ended up going back and he was absolutely dreadful. So don't take my word for anything, but Malik Chau looks decent. But that back line, Liv Rimento, Thiao, Botman and Hall, I think that may be our best in a very, very long time. What do you think?
00:32:52
Iain
but I agree. Yeah, I agree. If you've got them all fit, um Lewis Hall and Botman would be exposed if they were to start together next week, I think, because they're both needing to build their match fitness.
00:32:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yes.
00:33:07
Iain
But that sounds like a great backline. And to be fair, having Shah, Byrne, Trippier to come on as substitute, it's starting to get some depth there as long as everybody stays fit.
00:33:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, one of them.
00:33:23
Iain
That's why i go back to hoping that Alex Murphy can take a supporting role and come in and do 10 minutes and 15 minutes just to manage those guys' minutes. Because I think, you know, I think both Byrne's back went, didn't it, in the halfway through the Champions League season last time.
00:33:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, carried us a bit too much.
00:33:45
Iain
Yeah, and Bottman, well, Bottman is made of glass. So I i think we need...
00:33:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
with
00:33:52
Iain
I think we need some options to be able to to get to a point where we're winning the games and then you know manage the game out without having to to go and try and win 5 or 6-0.
00:34:03
Iain
And Murphy can do a job at that stage. Now, one observation I've got to make is that if we are trying to improve the quality of our squad, and you look at Alanga as a replacement for Almiron, and Ramsdale as a replacement for Dubravka,
00:34:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, 100%.
00:34:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:34:22
Iain
and Chow as a replacement for Lloyd Kelly. Wisser coming in to replace, um, Cameron, Cameron, Callum Wilson.
00:34:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
Callum Wilson.
00:34:35
Iain
I couldn't call him Cameron Wilson. I wonder who he is. Callum Wilson. Then actually it's not just a incremental step up. There's a big, big step up in quality on, on the players that we've got in the squad.
00:34:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
huge improvement, yeah.
00:34:49
Iain
Let's have a little bit more. Um, You know, I still think we need a midfielder. I certainly need midfield cover. Although we've got four and they'll only play three.
00:35:01
Iain
And I'm hoping Alfie Harrison can pick some of the slack up coming through. ah Maybe Harrison Ashby when we saw that of that revelatory midfield performance yesterday.
00:35:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah
00:35:14
Iain
But no, I would love a, you know, there's talk to today, i would interested in what you think, of Paqueta being available. Obviously, Bruno's best man, isn't it?
00:35:25
Iain
Another Brazilian.
00:35:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:35:26
Iain
More of a number 10, which we don't really have in the squad. I wouldn't be averse to that. What do you think?
00:35:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, absolutely not. I would love Lucas Paqueta. um I thought well when West Ham signed him for 50 million, I was sitting there thinking, why I think it was actually less. I think it was 40.
00:35:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
um I was sitting there thinking, why have we not got in for him? ah You're talking about your James Maddison's and stuff like I mean, Paqueta, unfortunately... has had the betting scandal, which means he would have been perfect in our centre midfield alongside Tonali.
00:35:59
Iain
Mm-hmm.
00:36:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
But it's it's one of those where he's had that scandal and he's not been the same for that season. Now that's behind him. He's got that pre-season in there. I think... I wouldn't be surprised if in six months' time we see a that £30 million that he could be available for has gone up to £60 million and Manchester City are interested again because he's an absolutely fantastic player.
00:36:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's a lot more than just Bruno's mate and I would love to see him in the black and white of Newcastle United. But according to Lee Ryder... we yeah we aren't We haven't made a bid, should we say. There is interest, um but apparently there isn't plans to make a bid as of yet. Now, for centre midfielders, we need that to change. So maybe after Visser, maybe that's the first place we go.
00:36:48
Iain
Well, I'm just thinking of a new solution for our EZAC replacement, because if we sell EZAC, we then have plenty of cash to go and get the players we're short. Just following on from the betting scandal link, Ivan Toney must be wanting to come back and play in England for the World Cup, yeah?
00:36:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yes.
00:37:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah
00:37:06
Iain
Don't you think? He would replace, he would replace Isaac, would he not?
00:37:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah Yeah, they have.
00:37:10
Iain
Alongside Wisser? They've already played together, haven't they?
00:37:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
Actually, that's a very good point. Yeah, they've both got their time at Brentford. They were both fantastic at Brentford during that season alongside Mbwemo. My only thing is, at ah like Ivan Soni, but I actually prefer, if we're talking about someone coming from Saudi, Alexander Mitrovic returning, because he could be available...
00:37:35
Iain
Has he got a betting scandal behind him, though, Michael? Because, honestly, come on.
00:37:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
That can be arranged.
00:37:44
Iain
oh
00:37:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, to be fair, were sponsored by BetMGM. Why not just go the whole hog and have every single player place bets on Newcastle to win?
00:37:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Because, to be honest, in my opinion, if you're betting on a team your team to win, I don't see what's wrong with that personally.
00:38:02
Iain
That shouldn't be a scandal. No, that shouldn't be a scandal.
00:38:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
Now, if you're betting on yellow cards like Paqueta was, yeah, that's a problem. Sonali was betting on us to win. if I mean, Ivan Toni was betting on us to lose, but he was at Peterborough at the time. And, well, just look at my manager for that season and you'll see why.
00:38:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
um I was betting on us to lose. So I'm sure everyone was. But yeah, we've just spoken about Stryker there. Wissa, potential Ivan, Tony and Mitrovic, two that I like Mitrovic, you like Tony.
00:38:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
But the two that have been linked...
00:38:34
Iain
I love Mitrovic as well. I would i would love Mitrovic.
00:38:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh, there we go. Yeah.
00:38:38
Iain
He'd be but back in black and white. He's probably much more affordable as well, isn't he? Because he's not registered with his team in Saudi.
00:38:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, he's not. The signing Nunes means he's out.
00:38:46
Iain
So he's got to play.
00:38:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
Him, Renan Lodi and lowi um one other player will have to be sold by Al Halal because they've got simply too many players. Mitrovic coming in for £20 million. I think that's a steal, personally, considering he's got, I think it's 47 goals in 53 games or something like that for that club.
00:39:07
Iain
he the
00:39:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
Like, why not?
00:39:09
Iain
He's a massive Newcastle fan as well, isn't he? Massive Newcastle fan.
00:39:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, he loves it. And he scored in a derby before. If we're going to lose Izak, the player that scores in derbies for us, let's replace him someone that's used to it. We can't really get Shola back, so why not me true?
00:39:23
Iain
No.
00:39:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
But two players that have been mentioned recently, just fun to finish off. Samu, who is apparently going to cost us £80 million. pounds Jackson, Nicholas Jackson, that is, is apparently going to cost us the same.
00:39:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
um I don't think either are worth it at that price. I don't know what you think.
00:39:43
Iain
samu Samu hasn't blotted his copybook for me. So I would prefer Samu to Jackson. Although I have seen one or two analyses of Jackson's two seasons in the Premier League.
00:39:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yes.
00:39:57
Iain
He's famous for missing goals, but he gets into those positions. he's He's a hard worker.
00:40:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:40:03
Iain
He's double-figure goals both seasons. So, you know, there might... And he's still quite young, isn't he? 24? 24?
00:40:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
Something like that, yeah.
00:40:12
Iain
There might be something there for Eddie work on and hone. I don't think it would be a complete lost cause, but the optics of Chelsea nipping in and taking De Lapp and then Joe Pedro and then funding them by parming off an 80 million Jackson on us, because I think those two cost at about 80 million.
00:40:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
About that, yeah.
00:40:37
Iain
The optics of that means that we will get bantered to death. all season
00:40:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah Yeah, you know what? It's almost worth not doing for that at all. um So those two, I think, probably don't come in. It's been said today that Alexander Rezac is unlikely to leave Newcastle United. Newcastle admit that he's not for sale.

His behaviour has meant that Newcastle United are looking at what it would take to sell him. That's the £150 million. It's believed that Liverpool aren't prepared to go anywhere near that valuation.
00:41:13
Iain
Yes.
00:41:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
So if Alexander Isak does stay, Johan Wissler, is that enough for us to sign up front? Isak, let's be honest, he'll probably be back playing in black and white in October if um if he you know doesn't leave the club this this window.
00:41:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't see him being out far beyond one Champions League game, to be honest. particularly in a World Cup, yeah, against Victor Jogares for that top spot. um So would you say Isaac and Vissa, when Isaac's having his little hissy fit, Vissa comes in and he does the job, would you say that's enough for us up top?
00:41:53
Iain
I would say, setting aside um second aside the the ramifications of trying to reintegrate him into the squad and assuming that he can do that, Isaac and Wissett is a lot more potent than Isaac and Wilson.
00:42:08
Iain
And we went through the last three seasons with Isaac and Wilson.
00:42:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
100%. Yeah.
00:42:11
Iain
So um I would be happy with that if we can bring him in. I would be happier. ah would be happier with ah a different striker. backup midfielder and another centre-back and get rid of Izak.
00:42:27
Iain
But, you know, it's not my birthday or Christmas, so we'll have to go with what we've got.
00:42:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, 100%.
00:42:33
Iain
um To be fair, I think i think we can tackle the season.
00:42:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah hundred percent
00:42:36
Iain
If Whissa and Chow are signed up this week and available for Villa and Liverpool and Leeds, I think we can get on with the season. um And maybe somebody else comes in in the last fortnight to be ready to be fully integrated for the Champions League kicking off. um Yeah, why not?
00:42:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
it's It's definitely not all doom and gloom.
00:42:58
Iain
i think liverpool are pay and Liverpool are playing a dangerous game if they're trying to smoke Newcastle into releasing Isaac on the cheap by not coming in for him this summer.
00:43:12
Iain
that you know Because if he starts playing and scoring and they come in at the yeah in January, he'll be even more expensive then, won't he? um
00:43:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
I would assume so, yeah.
00:43:22
Iain
Or if theyre wait or they wait till next ah wait till next season when Barcelona were looking for a replacement for Lewandowski, then they are chance in their arm, aren't there
00:43:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's only next season where it goes down.
00:43:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
Bayern Munich looking for one for Kane as well. It's... Yeah, i think it's I always said i thought Alexander Rezac would leave us next season. and didn't manager it I didn't envision him having the childlike attitude that he's had.
00:43:40
Iain
they? Hmm.
00:43:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
sorry But I always thought he either ends up with PSG when they realise Dembele isn't the striker. Although he's had a fantastic season, of course.
00:43:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Bayern Munich when they decide to get rid of Cano, as you say. Barcelona when they look to replace Lewandowski because... I mean, Barca don't have the money, but they've definitely got some talent that they could look to trade. um So it's one of those. I always thought he would leave around that time, but...
00:44:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
If it does happen this season, he's probably spoiled his legend status at the club. ah dos I do really see him coming back, having a decent season and then leaving us next year.
00:44:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
But it'll be very interesting to see if that happens, what his first reception is like at St. James' Park, because I've got a feeling that it'll be a little toxic.
00:44:34
Iain
Yeah.
00:44:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
But... Yeah.
00:44:35
Iain
it's hard It's hard to see. The time's running out for anything else to happen. Because we are not going to go and make an offer for an 80 million Samu if we're not sure that Liverpool are going to buy Isaac from us.
00:44:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:44:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
no Not at all.
00:44:48
Iain
And that means Liverpool giving us our value. Which, I mean, if they want to do 110, they could trade Harvey Elliott in with him. I'd take that.
00:44:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. Yeah, it's a
00:44:57
Iain
But... it's It's getting too complicated to put in when the season's kicked off and they've got games to prepare for. and I'm not sure. You know, it'll probably end up with somebody on loan.
00:45:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:45:10
Iain
Or Calvert-Lewin.
00:45:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
100%. and duben Right, that's enough.
00:45:15
Iain
and with
00:45:15
