Introduction & Friendship

00:00:13
Speaker
Welcome to the Sinister Sisters podcast. I'm Lauren. I'm Felicia. We're best friends and we like spooky stuff. That's correct. And we are sadly here to say that I have moved from New York city. If you didn't see our Instagram post.
00:00:32
Speaker
I've been dreading it for months. Tried to convince her otherwise. But it had to be done. You have to follow, people have to follow their joy. You know what I mean? You gotta follow what feels good to you. And I also want to say Felicia will not be in New York her whole life or maybe not New York City her whole life.
00:00:54
Speaker
Probably not. Probably not. I'm very interested in, you know, a suburban life with a car and a house and all those things. But New

Life Changes & Summer Excitement

00:01:03
Speaker
York, it's so funny because I always feel very ready to leave New York, but not in a time, relationship wise, career wise, that it makes sense for me to leave yet. And then it's so funny. And I think it's part of this, like, you know, this past week or so,
00:01:21
Speaker
mask mandates have been lifted. People are out of their houses again. We can go to bars again. Stuff is really starting to open up. And it's so funny that I was talking to some friends and I was just like, I feel so excited to have a New York summer in a way that I don't typically appreciate that. So I'm really stoked about it. So it's going to be a good summer. You're going to have a great summer.
00:01:47
Speaker
even though we're not technically together, we're still gonna be on this podcast. This is literally our- We're still emotionally together. Still emotionally together. This podcast is gonna be the thread of our relationship of making sure that we have to FaceTime every week, which I think is like, has kind of almost always been the point of it, really. Yeah.
00:02:08
Speaker
Think so. It's like it always will be you know, we were bonded bonded together originally because of horror theater But like now it's like, you know, she'll always you will always be that person for me that it's like This is what we like to talk about. This is what we do what we do. Hangouts consist of it's just now we just record it and also I do have to say first off I'm very sad to not be
00:02:34
Speaker
in New York for the summer, because I do think it's going to be wet and wild. Like I think people are out. People are already freaking like we walked through the East Village last weekend and it was literally like there was a street fair. People it was a you couldn't get by. And even like when that one you're going away thing, I was like, like it was freaking crazy. Yeah. And I think, you know, we're Felicia and I are both vaccinated.
00:03:00
Speaker
So like it feels amazing to, I don't know, it just feels like a resurgence of life in a lot of ways. It's like we're all ready to go. And so I think New York's going to be amazing. And then I was going to say, I also feel like I had to leave when I did because if I was there this summer, maybe I would never leave.
00:03:19
Speaker
You guys do fun. But I think it's going to be everywhere. People joked about the roaring 20s coming out of COVID. And I think that's exactly what this summer is going to be across the US. It's just going to be people freaking hugging each other and partying for three months straight. Which I think is

Movie Recommendations

00:03:34
Speaker
great. Licking each other. Yeah, just licking. Just licking your face. But anyway, moving into recommendations, do you want to go first?
00:03:45
Speaker
Sure. I watched the movie this week that I was really stoked about. And I've heard a couple of people talk about it. My friend Lee from those horror pals on YouTube have texted me about it. Now I'm realizing I don't think I responded to that text. So Lee, if you're listening, I will respond to that text after this. But The Empty Man, which is a kind of indie-ish horror movie. I don't even know who directed it. I haven't really looked up the IMDb stats yet.
00:04:12
Speaker
But I checked it out just based on a few people talking about it. And it was so refreshingly awesome. It's it's basically about this kind of ex cop that is trying to help a woman he knows find her missing teenager. And I'm trying to like say this without spoilers. You know, it's hard. And it turns out she's involved in some things that feel how do I say this?
00:04:41
Speaker
You know, I don't really think it's that big of a spoiler. There's like aspects of it that feel cult-like. There's aspects of it that feel slender manny. There's a lot of things in there that are like just... It's an interesting formula that I didn't expect to work because it's kind of dealing with like a supernatural situation alongside a cult-like situation. And it married really well.
00:05:06
Speaker
And the scares that they used were very subtle and psychological. And I just felt very refreshed by watching that movie. I was like, hell yeah, there's still like new types of horror. So exciting. Yes. And I will say like Slender Man is like a thing I am very interested in, but I thought the movie was just such a flop that awful a mess.
00:05:31
Speaker
And this kind of like, even though it's not Slender Man, like it kind of gave me what I wanted out of that Slender Man movie a little bit. Um, so I'm saying thank you for that. Oh my gosh. I have to watch then. That's so exciting. I think I rented it on either Amazon or YouTube or something, but it was great. Oh, I will definitely watch. Felicity and I saw Slender Man in theaters together and we're very sad together. We're both just disappointed. It was written and directed by David Pryor. Ooh.
00:06:00
Speaker
So that's amazing. That's who that is. Um, so I realized right before we started this podcast that I had nothing to recommend. I watched both Ghostbusters and the bodyguard this week, both great movies, both very old bodyguard. It's Whitney Houston. Oh, I'm happy for you. I don't think I've ever seen that. You have to see it because she's like young and at her finest. She's not that young, but, but at her finest.
00:06:29
Speaker
younger than, you know, she is in Brandi's Cinderella. And she's just like, I always forget how gorgeous she is. She's not, you know, an incredible actress. It's not like Lady Gaga and the stars care. We don't mind. It doesn't matter to us. No, she sings. I will always love you. And you feel it. Feel it. And you feel it in your bones. Yes. But I was going to say I'm really excited because I'm trying to see both Cruella and A Quiet Place 2 this weekend.
00:06:58
Speaker
So very excited about those upcoming. I'm probably trying to see both of those as well. I'm anxious about A Quiet Place too. I've heard good things. I've heard great things, but I just don't know how it can be as good as the first, but people say it is, or people really like it. I mean, the fact that they pushed it this long and just refused to put it out on BOD during the pandemic, I'm just like, they must be saving something special.
00:07:27
Speaker
Like it must be worth it for them somehow to put it on hold this long. That's how I feel about like

Creepy Toys: Elsa Doll Story

00:07:32
Speaker
the Candyman movie. I'm just like, they're holding off and there's a reason and I should wait because it's important. We're going to be so excited for Candyman. I feel like that is like, I hope it comes out this fall. I haven't looked up the date yet or the most recent, you know, date. Yeah, I have a need there. I'm assuming the fall. I, yeah, it should be a Halloween release or October release. Yeah.
00:07:57
Speaker
But anyway. Yeah. Are you going first today? I'm going first. We have a theme today.
00:08:05
Speaker
Yes, it is creepy toys, creepy toys, because I was going to do something else. And then you texted me yours. And I was like, that sounds more fun. So I just basically like found a different story that matched up with yours. So I was really excited. I told Felicia, I think I googled something really random, like scariest real life stories or like some nonsense general, general Google search.
00:08:30
Speaker
Something scary to talk about on a podcast? Exactly. I mean, there are times that I try to get more specific and then, you know, you have times like this where you just stumble upon something wonderful with a broad search. It works sometimes. So I am covering a creepy Elsa doll story that of course came from a viral social media post.
00:08:58
Speaker
Classic. Classic. So basically on Christmas, in Christmas 2013, no on Christmas 2013 in Houston, Texas, a girl was gifted an Elsa doll for Christmas. Everything seemed normal. I'm sure you have seen these Elsa dolls. It's like more plushy than a, you know, it's not a Barbie. It's like more like a stuffed animal.
00:09:22
Speaker
Everything seemed normal until it wasn't. So the doll, you know, normally recites phrases from the movie Frozen, sings Let It Go when you press a button on its necklace. But for two years, it spoke in English. Normal, normal. God, I'm scared. But in 2015, it started alternating between Spanish and English.
00:09:51
Speaker
even though no button was pressed and there is no button. Do they make Spanish? I'm asking questions too early. Go ahead. Go ahead. I was just about to say, I honestly should have looked up if there is, there's got to be a Spanish speaking version. But yeah, I mean, I'm sure they sell these dolls in other countries. Yes. Yes. I wonder if you could pick it up like next, you know what I mean? Like if you're in a Target in Houston, Texas, could you pick up the Spanish speaking version? Maybe.
00:10:20
Speaker
Oh, I don't know. Good question though. Listeners, let us know on Instagram. Please do. So yes. So the first sign of something going wrong is that she started alternating between Spanish and English and nothing had changed with the doll physically, but they thought it was suspicious. So they owned the doll for more than six years and they never changed the batteries, which is also suspicious. Oh.
00:10:46
Speaker
But the mother said the doll eventually got to the point that it was randomly speaking or singing, even when its switch was off. That's bad. That's a bad sign. Bad sign.
00:10:59
Speaker
So in December 2019, that was six years after they got it, they decided to get rid of the doll. And they honestly, it was not like, at first I was like, Oh my gosh, enough was enough. They had to get rid of it. But apparently they just were like, we need more room for new toys. The daughter had grown up, didn't really care about it. It had been colored on with markers, which is key to the story. Okay.
00:11:23
Speaker
And it was old, germy, whatever. So the family decided to not even donate it, but just to throw it in the trash. But Elsa didn't like that. I was just gonna say Elsa did not let it go. My dad joke of the night, but
00:11:43
Speaker
They threw Elsa in the trash can and the family then found the doll inside of a bench in their living room two weeks later. Oh no. So obviously like first, first go to is like daughter took it out of the trash, but the bench was covered in books and it was never usually opened and it wouldn't have been open except that they were like looking for something that was missing.
00:12:11
Speaker
But the mother like firmly believes that the children did not do it and thinks like, you know, that she's like, I can't imagine that my daughter would go into the trash to find this doll, pull her out and then put her like in this forgotten bench. Like, that's weird. Odd. So at this point, I don't know why they like didn't immediately try to throw it out, but like, it seems like in the story at this point, she was only operating in Spanish.
00:12:40
Speaker
I don't know that that really just feels like paranormal activity. Uh, so they once again decided to throw it out. This time they were not making any, you know, they weren't going to be loose about it. The dad truly wore rubber gloves, double bagged the doll, placed it at the bottom of the garbage can to be taken like in the, in the garbage on the way for trash day. So they put it like it was in the trash can in the truck.
00:13:07
Speaker
They went on vacation. They kind of forgot about it. And when they returned, their daughter found the doll outside the house, hidden in the backyard with no trash bag, nothing. I just gave myself chills. That is so, I'm like, my first thought is like, my first thought is it's possessed. But my second thought is like prank. Like who would be, who would be doing that? If it wasn't like, especially if they were on vacation, it couldn't be someone in the family. So like who was doing it?
00:13:36
Speaker
It's very creepy. No, it's very creepy. And as I said earlier, it was colored on with markers and was used so they know what the doll looked like and it was not a replacement. It was clearly the same doll. The mom agrees with you that she doesn't think it could be a prank. She's like, I don't think anyone that's a loved one or who would have access to her house or be able to
00:14:01
Speaker
know that like we threw away the doll or any of that would do it because the wouldn't like keep up the gag this long because it's been messing with her this much. And the husband is seemingly right there with her. Like he is not, he was legitimately suffering and like losing sleep over it. So seemingly neither of them. And the funny thing about the kids is that they don't even think, at least at that time,
00:14:25
Speaker
They weren't thinking of it as something sinister. She said, like when the daughter found it, it was kind of like, you know, Santa or the tooth fairy. Like she was just like, Oh, Elsa came back. Oh, so she's still quite young, I guess. I guess young enough that like, yeah, she still is like, Oh, this is like a financial somehow. Exactly. So she's like, I don't think even, you know, I don't think my daughter would like go into the trash and do that and have that reaction.
00:14:53
Speaker
And the mom said like, how much more terrifying is it if it is someone like a random stranger playing a prank, like someone who has access to their house, like rooted through their garage, came into their house, hid this doll. Yeah, that's like worse. Exactly. So she's honestly like fully aboard the possessed doll track. So they then decided, I kind of love this move. I would never think to do this.
00:15:20
Speaker
but they finally mailed it without a return address to a family friend in Minnesota. So kind of a rude gift to give to the family friend. But when she boxed it up to send it, it laughed for about 30 seconds straight. And she said it had never laughed like that. They'd heard it like laugh in the song or like in, you know, a shorter way. But she said for 30 seconds straight, it laughed.
00:15:48
Speaker
That's why wouldn't they just send it to like, I don't even know. Like why a family friend? I wouldn't want to send it to someone like super random that like it would never find its way back. Right. I, that's what I would do. Yeah. So that's, so she, they taped the box shot, drove to the post office, mailed it off. The doll was received and the family friend has like a very active, not very active, a relatively active Twitter about it, which is pretty funny. So like,
00:16:16
Speaker
First off, the friend did prank her, which was pretty evil, by sending a picture of the empty box and saying, it didn't come. Like, where's it all? But he got it. He got the Elsa doll and apparently taped her to the front of his Jeep. It was like where she was at least for a long time, which I think is pretty funny. Although probably asking for a car accident, honestly. Elsa wants to see the world. Maybe that's why she was so angry.
00:16:46
Speaker
I don't know, but thankfully the doll has not gone back to the family's house, but they have apparent, they claim to have had weird things happen in the house since, which I find interesting. They say they've had like doors opening and closing by themselves, lights and TVs turning on and strange things like that. I don't know how much I believe it. Hmm.
00:17:09
Speaker
but the friend also posted a DM from Zach from ghost adventures, reaching out to him about the Elsadall being like, Hey, but he, it's really funny because he's like the Twitter guy is like posting all the time, but he also was like, I'm not, I'm not messaging him back. Cause like, I don't believe in paranormal stuff, which I'm like, okay. Like he just is kind of laughing at it versus like, yes, interested in learning more. Yeah.
00:17:37
Speaker
Yes. If you're interested in this, you should look up this guy's Twitter. It's Hogan six nine eight. And he has like some creepy videos. We'll probably share one on the Instagram of her, of her in action. But there's of course, with any like viral social media posts, there's a lot of people speaking their opinion and saying it's not real. Of course, the mom
00:17:59
Speaker
I think the mom even took down the original post. She said, like, I don't want to be known as like the Elsa doll woman my whole life. She said she decided not to burn it because she was worried about like releasing the spirit into the house or something. But it's a crazy story. And I don't know really where I land on it, but creepy dolls always freak me out. I mean, part of me, this is my like, you know, supernaturally, paranormal brain talking.
00:18:29
Speaker
But part of me is I wonder if the entity in the doll, when it realized it was being mailed, just jumped to something else. It could. And then by the time that guy got it, it was just like a doll. I don't know. I'm also like, I don't really understand. I mean, I wonder if they've, I'm sure they've gotten into this with the Warrens, where what happens if you mail an item that's possessed? What's the shipping on that?
00:18:59
Speaker
Can you do it priority shipping? Do you FedEx it? I would do it overnight for sure, just in case. We need same day Amazon. Same day Amazon. Oh my gosh. Oh man. I can't wait to see a picture of it later because the idea of the marker also just sounds like so creepy. Very creepy. It's just like a dirty little Elsa doll. Just a dirty little Elsa.
00:19:28
Speaker
That's it. That's it? Okay, cool, cool. Since we don't have official ads for the podcast yet, we'll do one for ourselves. We would love if you could subscribe to us and leave a review. Also, if you want some pics to go along with the episodes, follow us on Instagram at sinister sisters podcast. And now

Creepy Toys: Evil Stick Mystery

00:19:50
Speaker
on to the next story. All right, so yeah, I'm doing another toy situation.
00:19:58
Speaker
Though mine is not necessarily haunted, it's just a really weird story. I can't wait. I didn't hear anything about this. Yeah, I remember this went viral like a few years ago.
00:20:10
Speaker
I think maybe my mom sent it to me or something, but I had to do some searching to actually find some information about it. Cause I couldn't remember what it was called, but I remembered it was this kind of like magic wand with a very scary image inside that was like very wrong. And I just couldn't remember what it was, but I found it and it was called the evil stick. That's what the toy is called? That's what the toy is called. That's how they marketed it?
00:20:39
Speaker
So here we go. Here we go. All right. Nicole Allen, just a nice mother from Dayton, Ohio. 2014, she goes into a dollar store and she's like, oh, I'm going to buy this nice magic wand for my two year old daughter. And basically I'll post a picture of it, of course, on the Instagram, but it's just like a little light up star wand with some metal foil over the star.
00:21:06
Speaker
It said ages three and up. It's got some like flower petals on it. You know, a classic Dollar Tree cardboard packaging. It had a smiling girl on it, like kind of an anime character. And it says on the back, can send out wonderful music. Huh? Yes.
00:21:24
Speaker
So it basically has a button on it that makes it light up and will ideally play wonderful music. But it is called the evil stick. It says that we're on the package in very bubbly, sweet letters. And so she got the toy home. And what she found is that when she lit up the toy, she saw kind of a strange, creepy image show up on the on the star itself.
00:21:54
Speaker
And you might want to look at the picture to understand what I'm talking about. And it made a maniacal laughter. And she said, oh, oh no, this is horrifying. And then she peeled back the piece of foil. And what was behind there was a truly terrifying image of a woman that had like kind of really like possessed eyes with a kitchen knife cutting her own wrists.
00:22:24
Speaker
What? A photo, not a drawing, a photograph. That was the only thing that that seemed edited on there was the eyeballs. Oh my God, I'm horrified. And so was Nicole. She's pissed. She's very pissed. She goes to the store.
00:22:47
Speaker
And then this eventually, she also posted online, of course, it gets the attention of the local news. And there's a local news station that kind of interviews her and also the dollar store owner whose name is Ammar, I think it's Mufasa, but that feels crazy to me. So let me just, it's M-O-U-S-T-A-F-A? Mustafa? Mustafa, thank you, oh my God.
00:23:15
Speaker
I just, my brain couldn't not reboot. So they asked him about it. They wanted to look at them and basically the evil stick. So apparently they came out or he purchased a big supply of them in 2012. And the princess on the package was an anime character named Sakaru Kinamoto. And it's from a nineties anime series called a card
00:23:46
Speaker
kaptor sakura, which is also a popular manga in Japan.
00:23:52
Speaker
I think that's pretty, it's pretty classic thing for dollar stores to kind of get basically like knockoffs of toys, like there's Sailor Moon stuff, obviously you can get like knockoff Barbies, like all that stuff is like very standard in dollar stores. And he had just gone to some sort of like buying, like people that run those kind of stores go to like buying fairs and then they just choose out what their stock is gonna be. And so he doesn't remember the name of the distributor
00:24:20
Speaker
he couldn't find any information on the packaging of the distributor and he was basically like he got kind of defensive about it which was truly maybe the best part is um because once again the packaging says three and up
00:24:34
Speaker
And he was like, well, you're buying something called an evil toy. Like maybe you should like screen your toys before you get them to your children. And she was like, well, it says three and up and it has a woman slitting her wrist. So that just doesn't seem like three and up. And he's like, well, you know, maybe for older kids, like seven, eight, it would be appropriate. And she was like, what? No. No. Not appropriate. Not? No. Seven is little.
00:25:01
Speaker
It's not appropriate to be on any toys. Exactly. Exactly. And he said he is not taking it off the shelves. He's like, yeah, I'm going to sell those suckers. That's the best part of the story. He loves it. He loves it. So then, of course, we have a couple of YouTube YouTubers coming into the situation. One of them. So this is a guy that's actually about to sell a million. Oh, yeah. So that's kind of that's kind of what I thought would happen. Like, I thought people would flood there to get them.
00:25:30
Speaker
But apparently not so quickly, but this dude, Matt Clark, who is a freelance writer and a Dayton, Ohio resident, he bought one, but he actually had to search through a bunch of them. There was like two racks of them. He's looking through them. And when he lights them up, he can see that there are actually different scary images on all of them. But... Oh, my God. Yes. But none of them were like the sledding the risk girl.
00:25:59
Speaker
Most of them were kind of drawn evil characters that looks like maybe from an anime series. So like a big monster or whatever like that. Nothing as horrifying as this random photo. But then finally, towards the back, he found one with the same evil image on there. He bought it. He made a YouTube video that's literally like 10 seconds long, him being like, here it is, I got it. And he plays the maniacal laugh and it's totally terrifying.
00:26:29
Speaker
And that video went viral. And so he made a follow-up video being like, this is everything I know. This is how I got it. This is all the information I have about it. And like he acted like he was like about to be like on the cusp of like figuring out.
00:26:45
Speaker
why this happened and where it came from because people were literally like calling distributors in China, trying to figure out where these toys came from. And then he ghosted the internet for like five years. So all these people thought it was a cursed object and Matt Clark got too close to discovering the truth and that he had been moided.
00:27:13
Speaker
That was not true. He was not murdered by the toy. He was just off the grid? Basically, he posted that video and then he didn't post a follow-up for a while and then he saw the comments like wondering what happened to him and he thought it was funny and so he just didn't post again for like five years to kind of keep it up. So that was rude, but kind of fun, kind of fun of him. I was going to say, what would you do? Would you like keep it going? You would probably have a series.
00:27:42
Speaker
I would have a full series. I'm too much of a attention hoa to not keep that going for at least a couple of months or as many videos as I could think of. Okay, so then the internet was most interested in trying to figure out where the image itself came from.
00:28:03
Speaker
and they finally found it. So basically there was a horror photographer named Butcher Ludwig, who, yes, who had this image posted to his Facebook account that he had taken back, and he had taken it back in 2002, part of a series called Macabre Muses. So the idea of this image to him was a vampire ready to feast on her own blood for sustenance.
00:28:31
Speaker
And then whoever got ahold of this image, which is still undetermined, added kind of the demon eyes to it in, you know, Photoshop or whatever. And then the real question is, is no one knows who either. So there's kind of two theories. One, that the distributor, you know, put that in there as an extra scary image or whatever.
00:28:56
Speaker
The other is that somebody maybe went to the store, saw the toy and had an idea to prank people and add that image in. Because it seems to me that all the toys make that maniacal laughter sound. They just all have different images. And this is the only one that is a photograph versus a drawing. Right. And the only one that's creepy on this level, right?
00:29:22
Speaker
Yes. And there's, according to Scare Theater's YouTube account, thank you, Scare Theater, there's always seem to have been two found, one by Nicole Allen and then the other by Matt Clark. Matt Clark. So there only seems to be two in existence that have this horrifying image. And then people have, I guess at this point, bought up the rest of them because it was so fun and viral on the internet. But yeah.
00:29:49
Speaker
Wow. That's the evil stick. No one knows who did it. Was it a prankster? Is it a cursed object? Probably not, but it is horrifying and it made the news. I feel like since it's so few, it's got to be somebody that went in and did it.
00:30:03
Speaker
Yeah. And I'm just like, who that little evil genius to do that. Like it's so, but it's also so messed up. Cause like if a kid, like I think the mom found it before the kid did, but like if a kid is just like found that like, are you going to be scarred for life? Like, you know, how's that going to go for you? Probably not good. Not

Reflections on Creepy Toys

00:30:24
Speaker
good. I don't know. That would freak me out if I was, especially if I was like really freaky image, like it's very upsetting for sure. Well,

That is a very creepy story. I don't, I don't know what to make of this evil stick, but also yeah. Evil stick is an interesting choice of toy when you're at the dollar store to give to your two year old. I know, I know. And she does say that she didn't really notice what it was called. She just like picked the magic wand and because of the font, it really looks like just like a princess toy. Oh no. Yeah. It's a tricky one for sure.

And also I was thinking about it and I was like, I guess she can't be like, I need a refund on my. I need this dollar back. Oh, what I would also say, if anyone is, knows anime well and knows this nineties show, card cop tour, Sakura.

If anyone knows that manga or the series, is there something about an evil stick in there? Is this like a prop from the series or is it just like random collaboration with like packaging and toy to sell something? Just curious. We want to know. We want to know. And that's my, that's the story. That's the evil stick.

I had a lot of fun. Maybe we should do a whole series of, of creepy toys. Well, there's so many. We were talking before we started about, there's like this Elmo that like told a kid to like kill, either kill their family or kill themselves or something horrible like that. This comes up fairly often. Like really messed up kids toys. So people have either a dark sense of humor or there's a lot of possessed objects around town. Well, I know. I feel like I said it on this podcast, but I feel like I had a possessed doll. Oh, your alley doll.

My alley doll, you know, she spoke randomly. She never spoke in Spanish, but she didn't speak when I pressed the button. She spoke whenever she GD wanted to. Yeah, whatever she felt like it. Whenever she was like, I'm going to spook Lauren in the middle of the night saying, see you later. Terrifying. See you later. Oh, it was just like that. What if I like closed my I always think about ending our podcast in an abrupt way. Like one of us got attacked.

Also, you should mention that, yeah, the Ali Dalek slowed down her text too. Yes. Yes. It was literally like when her batteries were dying. It ended up being almost exactly what Felicia did, but it was very like, see you later. It's not right. It's not right. But we did actually throw her in a trash bag in the trash can and she did go away. Thank goodness. Oh my gosh.

And with all that, I can assure you, you'll have some sweet, sweet nightmares. Bye.
