Gratitude and Personal Growth

00:01:49
Speaker
We always love starting these conversations with gratitude.
00:01:52
Speaker
So Halcyon, what are you grateful for this morning?
00:01:55
Speaker
I'm feeling grateful for old friends.
00:02:01
Speaker
I got the chance to gather with a group of guys where
00:02:05
Speaker
the new kid in our group we met 20 years ago, but the oldest friends I've known 45 years.
00:02:12
Speaker
And there's just something so magical about the level of shared experiences and witnessing people go through these journeys.
00:02:19
Speaker
And there's just this level of unconditional love amongst friends that you've just known so long.
00:02:27
Speaker
So I'm grateful for long time friendships.
00:02:32
Speaker
That's amazing.
00:02:33
Speaker
I love that so much.
00:02:34
Speaker
Nice.
00:02:34
Speaker
Beautiful.
00:02:35
Speaker
How about you, Janus?
00:02:37
Speaker
What are you grateful for today?
00:02:39
Speaker
I am grateful for...
00:02:43
Speaker
I guess just trust and connection and finding myself at the end of last week in a somewhat crunchy place in a few different areas of my life and kind of having the trust that things will work themselves out as long as I hold myself open to that possibility and finding that that is actually how it unfolded and transpired.
00:03:07
Speaker
Like there's always this like
00:03:10
Speaker
often there is a need or a drive to fix things.
00:03:16
Speaker
And sometimes you just have to let things be.
00:03:18
Speaker
And I had the trust to just let things be and just let them unfold how they're going to unfold.

Exploring Healing: Physical, Emotional, and Spiritual

00:03:23
Speaker
And things kind of sorted themselves out without me having to do a lot of work to make that happen.
00:03:28
Speaker
And having the trust to do that was something that is some wisdom I've gained through the years.
00:03:33
Speaker
So I was happy to see that come to fruition.
00:03:36
Speaker
So having, having trust in, in life is something that I'm great.
00:03:41
Speaker
Something that I'm grateful for today.
00:03:43
Speaker
Amazing.
00:03:44
Speaker
Beautiful.
00:03:45
Speaker
Thank you for sharing that.
00:03:48
Speaker
And I will share my gratitude for my body's resiliency and for my health.
00:03:55
Speaker
Oftentimes it's, uh, more gratitude comes when we get sick.
00:04:01
Speaker
And so I am coming out of a, uh,
00:04:04
Speaker
a portal, I'll call it.
00:04:06
Speaker
I got sick last week and got knocked down pretty hard.
00:04:09
Speaker
You might even be able to hear a little bit of my voice.
00:04:12
Speaker
But I am really grateful that I have been able to really utilize all my tools to be able to rebuild my body's strength and resiliency.
00:04:24
Speaker
and to watch how giving myself the rest that I needed and tending to the things that my body was asking for is really helping me to come through and to ride it out in the most graceful way.
00:04:38
Speaker
So I'm really, really grateful to be on the other side and feeling really healthy and get to be here with you guys today.
00:04:47
Speaker
Isn't that the way that you get knocked down and suddenly you remember how good it feels to be standing up?
00:04:55
Speaker
Yes.
00:04:56
Speaker
You know, don't take our health for granted.
00:04:58
Speaker
Yep.
00:04:59
Speaker
Yep, absolutely.
00:05:01
Speaker
Well, it's kind of perfect because here we are.
00:05:03
Speaker
The topic of today's Sparked episode is really all about healing and alternative healing.
00:05:11
Speaker
And what is that?
00:05:12
Speaker
And what is our relationship to alternative healing?
00:05:16
Speaker
And so I'd love to start us off with a question.
00:05:19
Speaker
So why don't we start with you, Yanus.
00:05:22
Speaker
I'm curious about your own personal experience with transformational healing or alternative healing.
00:05:30
Speaker
Have you experienced that?
00:05:31
Speaker
Do you have perspectives to start us off?
00:05:35
Speaker
Sure.
00:05:36
Speaker
And I feel it's also important to start off with the acknowledgement that there's several types of healing that we're talking about or referring to whether that is physical healing.
00:05:48
Speaker
emotional healing, mental healing, spiritual healing.
00:05:53
Speaker
There's all sorts of different ways to go about that and some definitely leads into the other.
00:05:59
Speaker
And I think my first real experience with alternative healing would be with body work and massage and things like that, which has definitely gotten acknowledged as being essential for most of us.

Alternative Healing and Mainstream Medicine

00:06:15
Speaker
But there was a time that I remember where that was really looked at as an alternative mode of healing.
00:06:22
Speaker
And a lot of people are like, okay, you're just getting your body rubbed down or whatever.
00:06:25
Speaker
But
00:06:27
Speaker
And there's definitely levels to that.
00:06:28
Speaker
And there's definitely levels of, you know, skill with practitioners.
00:06:31
Speaker
But when you find the right person for that, it can really, it can go beyond the physical and into the, you know, emotional and spiritual things as spiritual realms as well.
00:06:43
Speaker
But just, just with body work, feeling like, you know, not only am I working out like my muscles or joints or whatever, but like moving blockages, which like, like energetic blockages, like kind of just working with like,
00:06:58
Speaker
getting, you know, removing a blockage that helps you to feel lighter about whatever it is you're processing at that time.
00:07:04
Speaker
And there's a, a lot of practitioners who don't necessarily talk about that, but that's also kind of part of their thing.
00:07:12
Speaker
I kind of want to download.
00:07:13
Speaker
And so I've gone into massage, just, just looking for massage, but definitely also afterwards feeling lighter about a situation that was going on in my life and realizing, but not even being told or, or
00:07:25
Speaker
even advertised by the, by the body worker that I was with, I was like, wow, I feel so much better about this thing now.
00:07:31
Speaker
And they're like, oh yeah, that's kind of, that was kind of the, that was kind of the thing on the, on the down low as well.
00:07:35
Speaker
So that was my first experience with, you know, effective alternative forms of healing, so to speak.
00:07:43
Speaker
Amazing.
00:07:44
Speaker
Yes, yes, yes.
00:07:45
Speaker
Yeah.
00:07:47
Speaker
I think it's interesting and you're so right that things that were just a few years ago were not considered healing are now absolutely accepted.
00:07:56
Speaker
I was at dinner with my dad last week, who's 81 and, uh,
00:08:02
Speaker
Mike Wilberg Like my we asked him you know what are some of the weirdest things that he believes in you know it's trying to and he's like nothing I don't believe anything alternative you know.
00:08:09
Speaker
Mike Wilberg And i'm like well, but you do like after you had some health scares you know you now meditate, you know, and you get acupuncture and and which.
00:08:23
Speaker
five years ago, I think there's no way he would have done that.
00:08:25
Speaker
But it's like the medical community has now taken these things that were once in the realm of like super alternative and said, no, these actually are clearly work.
00:08:33
Speaker
And so his, you know, cancer doctors were like, these are the things that you should do if you want to be healthy is things that five years ago would have been whispered about or say, okay, you should
00:08:52
Speaker
So true.
00:08:53
Speaker
I know.
00:08:53
Speaker
And it's so funny because acupuncture in particular has been used for hundreds and hundreds of years, if not longer, you know, that was probably.
00:09:02
Speaker
And I think I'd like to just jump in that.
00:09:07
Speaker
So I am my father's son, and I did have a long history of skepticism in my life.
00:09:12
Speaker
And I remember when I was graduating from college, I was in psychology and
00:09:17
Speaker
I was looking at things like the Naropa Institute and Esalen and these kind of alternative healing places.
00:09:23
Speaker
And my professor, my guide was like, there's some really beautiful things on the fringes, but you need to know that once you cross the line out of kind of the mainstream, there's a lot of charlatans.
00:09:39
Speaker
You know, there's a lot of stuff out there that you just never quite know where they're coming from and if it's real.
00:09:46
Speaker
And unfortunately, that kind of stuck with me pretty hard.
00:09:49
Speaker
You know, so I have been...
00:09:51
Speaker
working from a pretty skeptical, very mainstream sciencey headspace for a long time, having little experiences here and there.
00:10:00
Speaker
But I think that perspective itself has hindered not only my ability to try things, but even when I do try them, kind of clouding my ability to see and feel what was happening.
00:10:14
Speaker
And so I'm really grateful that I'm kind of in a chapter now in my life where I'm
00:10:19
Speaker
eager and hungry and open to these things.
00:10:22
Speaker
So as we are discussing this, I'm jotting down notes and I'm excited to hear your experiences.
00:10:27
Speaker
And I'm so grateful to have people in my life like you guys that have a more grounded experiential history with healing that at one time was really outside my acceptable range.
00:10:41
Speaker
So thank you.
00:10:44
Speaker
Absolutely.
00:10:46
Speaker
Yeah, it's been a journey for me because, you know, I went to massage school when I was 22.
00:10:53
Speaker
And when I signed up to go to massage school, I thought I was going to learn how to rub bodies.
00:10:59
Speaker
which essentially that is what I was going to learn.
00:11:02
Speaker
And I learned so much more.
00:11:05
Speaker
It opened up this whole other world for me to see beyond just the rubbing of tissues.
00:11:13
Speaker
I, of course, learned a lot of the physical stuff and learned anatomy and just how the body works and movement and all of that.
00:11:19
Speaker
but also i started learning about energy and i also started to learn all these other types of modalities like acupressure and cranial sacral and energy healing and crystal therapy and sound healing and it just was just opened my eyes in such a profound way that absolutely changed my life
00:11:40
Speaker
And in that experience of going to school for it, I got to experience a lot of it, right?
00:11:47
Speaker
So I got to receive so many different types of modalities from that curious mindset, right?
00:11:53
Speaker
So I love that you're speaking to your skeptical nature, right?
00:11:58
Speaker
But it's very healthy, I think it was like the fifth agreement, right?
00:12:02
Speaker
You know, the four agreements, but the fifth agreement is healthy skepticism.
00:12:06
Speaker
So that is a good thing.
00:12:07
Speaker
And I also had that going into it, but also curiosity and had the privilege of getting to have so much hands on experience that I started to see that this stuff actually works.
00:12:21
Speaker
And it's been a journey.
00:12:22
Speaker
So that was, gosh, almost 20 years ago.
00:12:25
Speaker
Yes, I'm aging myself.
00:12:27
Speaker
Do you remember something that happened to you or some treatment where you're like, whoa, whoa.
00:12:36
Speaker
yeah oh yeah i remember i was in a class for crystal healing and back then i was kind of like what's the deal with crystals anyways i was like these are rocks they're they're awesome they're so pretty and i'm so attracted to them but
00:12:51
Speaker
you know, how do these people know what they do?
00:12:54
Speaker
And, you know, there's all this information about them, but I was so curious around it.
00:12:58
Speaker
And so I took a class and I was in this class and I had crystals on me and the student was working on me.
00:13:06
Speaker
And all of a sudden I saw my body from above and I was floating like on the ceiling.
00:13:14
Speaker
And I was like, oh, this is weird.
00:13:17
Speaker
And then all of a sudden I saw the teacher walk over and she put a black stone in my hand called hematite.
00:13:24
Speaker
And she told the student, she was like, oh, she puts the hematite in my hand and all of a sudden it was like, dropped right back into my body.
00:13:32
Speaker
And she goes, yeah, you got to be careful.
00:13:34
Speaker
Like you guys, did you just see her leaving her body?
00:13:37
Speaker
He's like, oh, is that what was happening?
00:13:40
Speaker
It was like, oh, wow.

Spiritual Experiences and Crystal Healing

00:13:42
Speaker
Okay.
00:13:42
Speaker
So that was probably like the first time I had ever experienced a really profound spiritual experience and a healing session.
00:13:49
Speaker
Mm-hmm.
00:13:52
Speaker
Yeah, that's yeah, I've got a number of crystal stories I could share, which we could do.
00:13:57
Speaker
We could do another time with not really having any sort of thought or belief about crystals, but seeing them in action and then learning afterwards.
00:14:05
Speaker
Like, oh, yeah, that's that's for that.
00:14:06
Speaker
I was like, oh, OK, interesting.
00:14:09
Speaker
Yeah.
00:14:10
Speaker
But there was there was one time where a girlfriend of mine who was a who was a body worker, she was and this is kind of the beginning of my own experience with alternative healings.
00:14:21
Speaker
We were in a group session, just hanging, hanging with friends.
00:14:24
Speaker
And she put her hands on a friend of a friend of ours, like on his back and both his like calves and hamstrings immediately like cramped and like seized up in his latest.
00:14:37
Speaker
And he was like, ah, she was like, oh, a whole bit.
00:14:39
Speaker
And she was like, oh, I'm so sorry.
00:14:41
Speaker
I was like, what was that about?
00:14:43
Speaker
And like she had just put her hands on him.
00:14:46
Speaker
And then coming to find out like there's a whole like meridian that runs along like energy meridian that if you if you are, you know, if your hands are warmed up or whatever, like you put them on.
00:14:57
Speaker
And that is a potential thing that could happen.
00:15:00
Speaker
And realizing like, oh, I could touch somebody here.
00:15:03
Speaker
And that affects like.
00:15:05
Speaker
the extension of your limbs and all you're doing is touching.
00:15:08
Speaker
Um, that was my first real, like it was my first, one of my first like moments of being like, wow, there is something to this whole like energy and meridian through the body that gets, that is very much a part of like acupressure, acupuncture, body work, um, as well.
00:15:23
Speaker
Like there's a lot of that stuff that goes into that, which is really not acknowledged by Western medicine, that there's any sort of
00:15:30
Speaker
energy lines within the body uh that can be accessed and or and or healed um by just be a be a touch or you know whatever modality you're looking into so that was my first um kind of awakening to that um when it comes to body work and i have had some experience with like things like and maybe betsy could speak to this as as far as things like um
00:15:53
Speaker
like these crystal mats or these crystal bio mats, um, that you can lie on and to, to kind of help you with real relax or releasing stress or a number of, a number of other things.
00:16:04
Speaker
And, you know, having, whether it's like an amethyst bio matter, a jade bio matter, something like that.
00:16:09
Speaker
Um, that's also potentially heated as well.
00:16:12
Speaker
So there's all sorts of things that I have experienced
00:16:16
Speaker
in you know in the in the healing journey that have that have found that i found some real good success with and real good results with yes i use a heated crystal mat pretty much every day especially in the winter but what it's doing is it's um it's using infrared to heat up the crystals and then the crystals emit that uh negative ions and the heat of course is great for circulation
00:16:42
Speaker
And so circulation just has a whole slew of benefits.
00:16:46
Speaker
And it's just also really deeply restorative and relaxing and helps just on so many different levels.
00:16:51
Speaker
So yeah, I would consider those kinds of things of your own biohacking, alternative healing modalities, right?
00:16:59
Speaker
And your own self-healer.
00:17:02
Speaker
The other thing I use too for my healing practice is red light therapy, which is different than infrared.
00:17:10
Speaker
Red light therapy produces a spectrum of light frequencies that is red.
00:17:16
Speaker
And it helps to bring cellular renewal.
00:17:21
Speaker
It helps boosting mood.
00:17:23
Speaker
It helps with so many different things.
00:17:26
Speaker
I mean, it's something I do almost daily.
00:17:29
Speaker
for the last couple of years.
00:17:30
Speaker
And it has really helped me to just feel good, especially in the winter again.
00:17:35
Speaker
It's like when there's not as much sun.
00:17:39
Speaker
So real quick, not that we have to get all deep in the weeds about it, but I'm curious as to, is that something that you, the red light therapy, is that something that is, you absorb that through the skin or is that a visual thing or is it both?
00:17:52
Speaker
both both okay yeah mostly through the skin yeah it helps with skin as well and muscle repair and yeah healing it's really great for any wounds or injuries yeah
00:18:09
Speaker
Okay.
00:18:09
Speaker
One thing I've experienced in the realm of plant medicines is a lot of healing via ayahuasca and to a different degree mushrooms.

Plant Medicines and Personal Experiences

00:18:19
Speaker
But one thing I have not done is combo, which is the frog, the frog, I guess, poison, I guess.
00:18:27
Speaker
Poison's a good word.
00:18:28
Speaker
Therapy.
00:18:29
Speaker
Poison's a good word.
00:18:30
Speaker
Yeah.
00:18:30
Speaker
So I think you two have some experience with that.
00:18:35
Speaker
Can we touch on that for a little bit and what your experiences have been with that?
00:18:38
Speaker
It's definitely healing.
00:18:40
Speaker
It's very healing.
00:18:41
Speaker
It comes from a frog.
00:18:44
Speaker
They apply burns to the skin and then rub the poison into the, or apply the poison into the fresh burns.
00:18:54
Speaker
And then you purge a whole bunch.
00:18:57
Speaker
It is not a psychedelic.
00:18:59
Speaker
My experience- It's called warrior medicine.
00:19:02
Speaker
Warrior medicine.
00:19:04
Speaker
So my experience was-
00:19:08
Speaker
super intense.
00:19:09
Speaker
Um, it, I passed out, uh, the two times that I've done it.
00:19:15
Speaker
Um, and, and I didn't have a, uh, a noticeable enough experience that, that I felt like it was something that I wanted to continue with the, the, the, the struggles that I was having with it or the, the, the discomfort versus feeling better.
00:19:31
Speaker
I mean, one of the things at the time I was kind of hoping that it would, uh, when I was, I was like, I'm kind of,
00:19:37
Speaker
feeling like I'm going for a beer a little too often.
00:19:40
Speaker
And I've heard people say that this is something that could be a, you know, help with, with those kinds of patterns and habits.
00:19:47
Speaker
And I felt like later in the day after doing it, I wanted a beer.
00:19:51
Speaker
You know, this is, this is maybe this is me and my skeptical place where I was not open to this, the, the, the depth of it.
00:19:57
Speaker
There could be subtleties that I'm just not in tune with.
00:20:01
Speaker
Oh yeah.
00:20:01
Speaker
Yeah.
00:20:02
Speaker
It's a deep, it's a very deep process.
00:20:06
Speaker
Um, I'll speak to the combo part in a moment, but I feel like, um, what you're speaking to essentially is in the realm of healing, whether it's, uh, doing a really deep, uh, experience like combo or getting a really deep body work session or acupuncture or getting the circulation going.
00:20:24
Speaker
I like to consider it as like,
00:20:27
Speaker
We have this stream running through us, right?
00:20:31
Speaker
And if there is debris that gets into the stream, then there's blockages, right?
00:20:36
Speaker
There is like clogged energy, clogged lymph, clogged just all kinds of different things that get stopped up in our physical bodies, in our energetic bodies, right?
00:20:47
Speaker
And so when we can go in and do these little cleanups, right, clear out the debris, then things start to flow more, right?
00:20:56
Speaker
Yannis, you're speaking to the massage that you got where afterwards you're feeling lighter and you feel more clarity coming through about your certain life situations.
00:21:06
Speaker
It's like, well, it's like that practitioner came in and helped you clear some of those branches and the boulders that may have fallen into the flow of your energy.
00:21:17
Speaker
You know, the combo is really powerful from the Amazon.
00:21:23
Speaker
It is a frog, yeah, the combo frog, and it basically, yeah, is used to help to clear and eradicate any density and toxicity in the body.
00:21:35
Speaker
It has been known to help with lots of different disorders, especially things that are...
00:21:43
Speaker
like eczema and skin things, things that are getting the lymph out.
00:21:48
Speaker
It's helped with Lyme.
00:21:50
Speaker
There's lots of research now that how much it's been really helping people to clear toxicity from the body.
00:21:58
Speaker
And so from what I've experienced is that when you partake
00:22:02
Speaker
in this experience as a very ceremonial experience.
00:22:06
Speaker
It's not just like, oh yeah, somebody's just gonna give it to, administer it to.
00:22:11
Speaker
It's very held in reverence and sacredness.
00:22:15
Speaker
And the practitioner is usually a medicine person or a shaman that is able to hold that space for you to have a deeply transformational experience.
00:22:23
Speaker
And yes, it's really uncomfortable.
00:22:25
Speaker
I had the same experience, Halsey, and I was like, wait,
00:22:29
Speaker
I'm paying somebody to burn my skin so that way I purge.
00:22:34
Speaker
It's like, yeah, it's so intense.
00:22:36
Speaker
But what I found is a real profound level of lightness afterwards, right?
00:22:43
Speaker
Because it's like similar to like if you do a cleanse, right?
00:22:47
Speaker
You do a three-day cleanse, 10-day cleanse.
00:22:50
Speaker
You do maybe a Clonix, right?
00:22:52
Speaker
It's clearing, it's pulling things out that are ready to be released.
00:22:56
Speaker
And the combo is essentially that on a very deep,
00:23:01
Speaker
mental, physical, emotional, spiritual way.
00:23:05
Speaker
It's really profound.
00:23:07
Speaker
Not for everybody, of course.
00:23:09
Speaker
And like you said, I'm not an expert.
00:23:11
Speaker
I've done it maybe four times.
00:23:13
Speaker
But I will say that it is an alternative healing modality that is becoming more available to people because there is
00:23:21
Speaker
a lot of healing that is needed.
00:23:24
Speaker
And I feel like that's part of the reason why I love talking about this topic, because it feels like the alternative healing and healing is an important part of our world.
00:23:36
Speaker
There's so much toxicity that we all navigate every single day from healing
00:23:41
Speaker
drinking plastics to breathing in chemtrails to all the exhaust to social media there's there's a lot of things that we're processing all the time and it's important for us to find ways that we can clear cleanse our system and really stay in alignment to our natural body's um biomagnetic magnetic field and just uh intelligence right i think um
00:24:10
Speaker
Yeah, and that speaks to something else that came to mind for me in that what Halstead is talking about, which you're both talking about, I think it's important to acknowledge that
00:24:21
Speaker
The skepticism that somebody that you might have about any sort of modality is healthy.
00:24:26
Speaker
You can definitely go a little too far with it where you're not necessarily open to what it has to offer.
00:24:32
Speaker
But I think it's important to because you should have skepticism with Western accepted modalities as well.
00:24:39
Speaker
If you're talking to a
00:24:42
Speaker
You know, a surgeon who's going to like, who's always, who's going to recommend surgery because that's what they do.
00:24:46
Speaker
It's like, it might not always be the, the thing that you need.
00:24:49
Speaker
Uh, so it's important to, you know, get second opinions and get, um, you know, have that healthy skepticism, no matter what Avenue you're going down.
00:24:57
Speaker
Um, and then it also, the other end of that spectrum.
00:25:02
Speaker
is that when it comes to the healing aspect of it, you got to want it.
00:25:09
Speaker
There's a lot of times we go into something, whether it's, I've gone into a massage where I wasn't able to
00:25:16
Speaker
I guess, fully relax, or I had just too much going on mentally.
00:25:19
Speaker
And I just couldn't get myself to receive the benefits of that.
00:25:23
Speaker
And that's just what I want with like massage.
00:25:25
Speaker
I've, I've, I've also gone into other areas, like, you know, whether it's a plant ceremony, we're just, I just wasn't able to kind of let go and receive the benefits that, that this, that this method had to offer.
00:25:37
Speaker
And I think it's important that we,
00:25:39
Speaker
acknowledge like before we jump into something it's like okay so you gotta want it you gotta want to get that what it is that you're thinking that you might be going for be like okay so i am open i'm actually really open to receiving what there is here for me it's like with with um you know with housing your your combo experience with like wanting to you know get past let's say the desire to have a beer or whatever there's probably something outside of the whole combo experience that you needed to kind of process and and
00:26:09
Speaker
let go of in order for that you know sort of like transition to work for you um i think we've all found ourselves in a in a position like that of not being able to receive the thing that we're kind of looking for so um so yeah so there's all sorts of work to be done you know we gotta we gotta help that modality to to get us to where we're looking to get to
00:26:31
Speaker
And that's true really with any belief, including beliefs that are just in our minds.
00:26:38
Speaker
I mean, a placebo works because you believe that it's going to help you.
00:26:42
Speaker
And so if you don't believe something's going to help you, even if it is helping you, you're fighting it.
00:26:47
Speaker
So I think you're right.
00:26:48
Speaker
There's a lot to be said for you being open to it and being on the same side as the healing and not fighting it.
00:26:55
Speaker
Yeah.
00:26:58
Speaker
I love that

Burning Man and Alternative Healing Insights

00:26:59
Speaker
so much.
00:26:59
Speaker
And, you know, I'm feeling sparked to check in with you guys about how your Burning Man experience has provided any insight into alternative healing.
00:27:11
Speaker
Because here we are, we're all longtime burners.
00:27:13
Speaker
This is a very common thread.
00:27:15
Speaker
I think a lot of you guys out there listening have been to Burning Man.
00:27:18
Speaker
You know, it's obviously so much more than a party in the desert.
00:27:22
Speaker
It's not just all about music and dancing all night, but there's workshops and there's very deeply healing experiences out there.
00:27:32
Speaker
So can either of you share any of your sparks of healing from being out on the playa?
00:27:39
Speaker
Yeah, certainly.
00:27:40
Speaker
That's where I was introduced to a lot of the concepts that we're talking about today and that we haven't even began to touch on today.
00:27:49
Speaker
It's been out there on the playa because like you said, there's a lot on offer out there.
00:27:54
Speaker
I actually had a couple of really good meditation sessions out there, believe it or not.
00:27:59
Speaker
In addition to all the stimulus that's out there, there are places where you can kind of sit and drop into meditation in a small group or one-on-one or in a larger group.
00:28:09
Speaker
And definitely having that experience of sitting in meditation and having somebody kind of just do a guided meditation, sometimes along with another modality, like let's say sound healing, where somebody is, you know,
00:28:22
Speaker
you know playing the singing bowls or playing the crystal bowls or like a harp or something something along those lines that really drops you into this meditative state and yeah so that's my first experience with guided meditation was out there and having some really being
00:28:36
Speaker
Profound experiences and being like, wow, there's there's something here and feeling feeling that lightness to come out of that.
00:28:44
Speaker
And one time I went to and I went to a sound meditation pretty hungover from the night before and just sitting just lying there for an hour and having these bowls and, you know, other instruments played over me.
00:28:57
Speaker
Definitely feeling like some sort of like processing whatever the toxicity or oxidants that were in my body and coming out of that an hour feeling absolutely like recharged and rejuvenated.
00:29:10
Speaker
And the only difference was sitting and having some sound waves like wash over me.
00:29:15
Speaker
It's like, well, OK, there is something to that as well.
00:29:17
Speaker
So, yeah, Burning Man is a great place for that.
00:29:20
Speaker
And you mentioned about you will find places or spaces where you can drop into things.
00:29:26
Speaker
And I think that idea of
00:29:29
Speaker
these safe spaces is one of the huge healing aspects that I witness at Burning Man, where there's so much that we have access to in ourselves that we hold the reins on for fear of how it will be seen or judged in the default world.
00:29:49
Speaker
But when you have
00:29:51
Speaker
a space, whether it's, you know, a dome or an event, a meditation, a talk, and you're surrounded by people where you very quickly within that community space of feel safe.
00:30:03
Speaker
There's a real healing aspect to allowing, you know,
00:30:09
Speaker
a movement or words or thoughts to come out and know that you will be accepted for it.
00:30:14
Speaker
That radical inclusion, radical self-expression that is so embraced.
00:30:19
Speaker
It's just being in a container that supports that, I think allows a ton of self-healing.
00:30:25
Speaker
It's not a modality, but it's actually maybe there is like a safe space is a really beautiful tool.
00:30:31
Speaker
Yeah.
00:30:32
Speaker
Set and setting is what you're talking about.
00:30:34
Speaker
Like the environment, like getting that dialed in can bring, you know, kind of allows these, you know, positive results to happen.
00:30:40
Speaker
Absolutely.
00:30:41
Speaker
And then we can relax, right?
00:30:42
Speaker
Because if the environment is not supportive or it doesn't feel safe, then we can't relax, right?
00:30:49
Speaker
And how do we let go of our skepticism if we're all like tight, you know, how can we actually allow the
00:30:56
Speaker
energy to flow, that stream to flow if I don't feel relaxed and safe in my body.
00:31:03
Speaker
So speaking of tight, I just wanted to, in a personal level, as we were talking a minute ago, I felt myself get all tight up and I felt like I didn't want to make sure, I wanted to like, well, I'm not endorsing combo, I don't know.
00:31:18
Speaker
It was weird, this skepticism or this, but what's cool for me is that that awareness that I was having in my body, that connecting to these thoughts and old patterns,
00:31:30
Speaker
was a new thing for me.
00:31:31
Speaker
So like, okay, cool.
00:31:32
Speaker
I'm, I'm the funny daddy skeptic in the room, but, but I'm also growing.
00:31:36
Speaker
Yay.
00:31:38
Speaker
Yeah.
00:31:40
Speaker
And I, and, and I think it's, it's important to also acknowledge for anybody who's listening.
00:31:45
Speaker
We're not necessarily endorsing any one thing over the other or any one thing, even on its own.
00:31:51
Speaker
It's just, these are, these are our experiences.
00:31:53
Speaker
This is what we have, um,
00:31:56
Speaker
experience with these various modalities, your mileage may vary if you if you decide you want to you decide you want to try any of these out.
00:32:03
Speaker
Yes, absolutely.
00:32:05
Speaker
And here we are.
00:32:06
Speaker
We are three friends that love getting together to just chat.
00:32:10
Speaker
This is like basically what
00:32:12
Speaker
you guys are getting to experience is a little window into the conversations that we get to have at a gathering.
00:32:19
Speaker
And it feels really good to just be inspired here, the three of us, and get a chance to share with you guys some of our own personal experiences on these different kinds of things.
00:32:27
Speaker
So yeah, personal experiences.
00:32:29
Speaker
I'm curious, Betsy, as a practitioner, if you have experiences, you know, with clients or with people that you're working with, anything that is
00:32:38
Speaker
been memorable or that just keeps you inspired to be on your path?
00:32:42
Speaker
Is that too big a question?
00:32:45
Speaker
How much time do we have?
00:32:48
Speaker
So as I mentioned, I've been doing body work and healing work for almost 20 years, and I have seen so many different things and experiences.

Betsy's Journey to Intuitive Healing Practice

00:32:59
Speaker
When I first started out, just like most practitioners, I worked at a spa and it was very cookie cutter, kind of spa-like experience where they say, okay, when you work on a person, it's 55 minutes.
00:33:13
Speaker
You have to have five minutes on each leg, five minutes on each arm.
00:33:17
Speaker
You have 15 minutes on the back.
00:33:18
Speaker
Then you turn them over and you do this very specific protocol.
00:33:23
Speaker
And it was, you know, it was a training that I was going through.
00:33:27
Speaker
And during that time, I was starting to feel some more intuition coming through.
00:33:33
Speaker
I was starting to notice certain things when I was working on people.
00:33:37
Speaker
It was much more than just this like physical experience.
00:33:42
Speaker
And so I started to incorporate a little bit of crystals into the space.
00:33:48
Speaker
I just started putting them around the room when I would be working or underneath the table.
00:33:54
Speaker
And I noticed people starting to have these deeper experiences.
00:33:58
Speaker
And I think one of the first times I was working at the spa, I realized there was something much more.
00:34:05
Speaker
So I had this stranger come in, like not uncommon.
00:34:10
Speaker
I had lots of different people that I had never met and probably will never see again.
00:34:14
Speaker
come in, this guy had this profoundly healing experience, like just so much energy moving.
00:34:20
Speaker
He was having all these insights.
00:34:22
Speaker
He was getting just like so many deep breaths and just like opening and unlocking something.
00:34:29
Speaker
And I wasn't doing anything too different except for one thing that I really noticed
00:34:34
Speaker
was the deep level of presence that I was able to access because of his receptivity.
00:34:40
Speaker
Right?
00:34:41
Speaker
Sometimes people come in and they, like you guys were talking about, or maybe just kind of like block to receiving in their head, kind of just like not really fully present.
00:34:52
Speaker
Well, this guy was really present.
00:34:54
Speaker
He was ready for it.
00:34:55
Speaker
He was open.
00:34:56
Speaker
He was receiving, which then that also helped me open to be even more present.
00:35:02
Speaker
Right?
00:35:02
Speaker
And so by the end of the session,
00:35:04
Speaker
we both were like, wow, that was absolutely beautiful.
00:35:10
Speaker
That felt like miracles just happened in the last hour.
00:35:15
Speaker
And so that was the catalyst for me to start my own practice.
00:35:19
Speaker
So when I started to see that there was so much more available and we can really explore these different realms of the modalities and kind of get out of that cookie cutter.
00:35:29
Speaker
And then once I started to have my own practice,
00:35:33
Speaker
my own practice, I can incorporate sound healing and aromatherapy and really adjust each session per person and then infuse intention into the sessions.
00:35:44
Speaker
That's when everything started to change.
00:35:48
Speaker
some of the sessions that I've seen people go through, whether it is a one-time session or working with me for many, many sessions, just seen so much beautiful growth and evolution and personal insight.
00:36:02
Speaker
And, you know, I feel like, you know, I could go into some of these, but I feel like the sparks that I want to share is really important.
00:36:11
Speaker
the realization that, you know, when we are holding a sacred space for somebody to have a transformational experience, as a healer, we're not healing anyone.
00:36:24
Speaker
Right.
00:36:24
Speaker
I used to think that when, you know, I was this young thing, like, Oh, I'm going to be a healer and I heal people.

The Role of Healers in Self-Healing

00:36:30
Speaker
Um, but I quickly started to realize like, Oh no, no, no.
00:36:34
Speaker
We're all our own healers, right?
00:36:36
Speaker
We're each here.
00:36:37
Speaker
We have these abilities to heal ourselves and a skilled practitioner creates a sacred space for each person to have their own healing.
00:36:45
Speaker
Right.
00:36:46
Speaker
And so I have just,
00:36:49
Speaker
loved getting to create those beautiful spaces for people to come into my embrace and into, um, this environment to simply be held and to witness these transformations that people are having.
00:37:03
Speaker
Um, and so, yeah, I love, I love that, um, to be able to hold a sacred space for somebody and witness their healing rather than healing them.
00:37:14
Speaker
That's beautiful.
00:37:15
Speaker
Yeah.
00:37:17
Speaker
So one thing that I've experienced with body work, and it's kind of what Betsy is speaking to, I've had all sorts of different modalities when it comes to things like massage.
00:37:31
Speaker
And I found looking back on it, I found that the, the best results I've gotten, or the longest lasting results I've gotten are from practitioners who have a strong intuitive, intuitive, um, practice when, and so that they don't just do Swedish or shiatsu or, or any other, or, you know, sports massage, um,
00:37:52
Speaker
types of modalities that there is a strong intuitive practice where it's like, okay, I'm just going to go with the flow and see how it feels.
00:38:00
Speaker
Those are the ones that have really got me.
00:38:03
Speaker
They're like, okay, we're just going to put my hands on you, start working and see what
00:38:09
Speaker
what happens see where it goes and which sounds like a like okay well that's an that's an odd way to go about it but it is those are far and away my best my best sessions have been the ones that there is an intuitive um aspect to the practitioner and they're and they're very upfront about that as well so that's been those have been my good ones and that was also when i first
00:38:32
Speaker
had an experience with Reiki, which is something it's, it's like an energy, you know, energy work practice that gets a lot of eye rolls from a lot of people, even like a lot of my friends.
00:38:43
Speaker
Oh my, Oh, they're a Reiki practitioner.
00:38:45
Speaker
But I had a,
00:38:47
Speaker
session where that was incorporated without really telling me.
00:38:52
Speaker
She was just moving some stuff and she had her hands over me, but it really felt like her hands were on me and really moving some stuff around.
00:39:02
Speaker
I could feel them moving.
00:39:03
Speaker
It was my first experience with that.
00:39:05
Speaker
I was like, what is...
00:39:06
Speaker
what is that?
00:39:07
Speaker
Oh my gosh, what is happening back there and coming out and it's feeling so good afterwards.
00:39:11
Speaker
I'm like, what were you doing?
00:39:13
Speaker
Like at the, at the last tail end of that, she's like, Oh, that was Reiki and so on and so forth.
00:39:17
Speaker
It's just like, I wasn't really touching you.
00:39:19
Speaker
I'm like, what do you mean you weren't touching me?
00:39:20
Speaker
I totally felt she's like, no, that's like the last 10 minutes was really just my hands over you, not on you.
00:39:25
Speaker
And I'm just, I got it.
00:39:26
Speaker
I didn't believe it at first, but then after talking to her, I thought, Oh, okay, I guess so.
00:39:31
Speaker
But yeah,
00:39:32
Speaker
Having that first experience of my, without knowing it was coming, kind of opened up my eyes so that later when people were like, oh, I'm a Reiki practitioner.
00:39:42
Speaker
I was like, well, I actually have some experience with that.
00:39:45
Speaker
And it felt legit to me.
00:39:46
Speaker
So that was able, so that kind of opened me up to the idea of energy work.
00:39:51
Speaker
And that was a, that was a,
00:39:53
Speaker
you know, a functional modality, like a real practice that people that that would get, you know, would and could get people to experience various levels of healing.
00:40:04
Speaker
So yeah, that was a good thing through another that's something else worth looking into.
00:40:09
Speaker
Yeah, I love Reiki.
00:40:10
Speaker
Reiki is such a you know what Reiki actually means?
00:40:14
Speaker
Spiritual energy.
00:40:16
Speaker
That's it.
00:40:17
Speaker
You know, we all have access to spiritual energy.
00:40:20
Speaker
We are spiritual energy.
00:40:22
Speaker
And so, yeah, when a practitioner is trained in how to move that spiritual energy, that it's really, it's so powerful.
00:40:29
Speaker
And then the other modality that I'll speak to that is, I guess, considered alternative healing is cranial sacral.
00:40:37
Speaker
Cranial sacral is really such a beautiful modality.
00:40:40
Speaker
It's very light touch.
00:40:42
Speaker
So oftentimes when you receive a session, it doesn't even feel like they're doing anything because you're five grams of pressure of the hands on the body.
00:40:53
Speaker
And it's working with the cerebral spinal fluid that basically is a fluid that goes around every nerve in our body.
00:41:01
Speaker
It protects our nervous system and our spinal cord.
00:41:04
Speaker
And it is...
00:41:05
Speaker
this is like crystalline liquid that moves through our body and it's working with that on a very, very subtle, subtle level.
00:41:13
Speaker
I love that so much, whether I'm receiving it or giving craniosacral, it is so powerful to be able to tune into a deep space of relaxation and unwinding and watch how
00:41:28
Speaker
the the cranial bones and the um the spine and the the sacrum like it's just all interconnected it is if you haven't experienced cranial sacral i highly highly recommend it for just nervous system renewal for balance for um just restoration it's one of my favorites yeah
00:41:51
Speaker
And is it correct me if I'm wrong?
00:41:53
Speaker
Isn't that a lot of like, pressure work, let's say on the back of the skull, the back of the neck?

Understanding Cranial Sacral Therapy

00:41:58
Speaker
Or is it kind of all up and down the spine?
00:42:00
Speaker
It's all over the whole body.
00:42:02
Speaker
Okay.
00:42:02
Speaker
It's really like I mean depending on the modality, which type you do.
00:42:06
Speaker
But the craniosacral is throughout the entire body.
00:42:10
Speaker
The main focus is on the head and the cranium, working on the sutures of the skull.
00:42:16
Speaker
The sutures are where the bones come together on the skull.
00:42:20
Speaker
And so, yeah, there's going to be some
00:42:23
Speaker
points that are touched.
00:42:24
Speaker
There's not much pressure, though.
00:42:26
Speaker
You might feel like if you have had one, the occipital hold where there's some fingers on the back of your neck, that feels like probably the most amount of pressure that you'll get any cranial sacral session.
00:42:38
Speaker
But the rest is really light.
00:42:41
Speaker
interesting interesting so what's the type where they they get their fingers in your mouth and they like rolfing rolfing in the mouth no no rolfing is when you're like you're like bouncing on the massage table like there's a lot of forearm work and just i got rolf and there's fingers in my nose there's fingers all up in my mouth that was intense you could
00:43:03
Speaker
Yeah.
00:43:04
Speaker
Really?
00:43:04
Speaker
Yeah.
00:43:05
Speaker
Rolfing is basically like structural integration that is like putting bones in different places.
00:43:10
Speaker
Like it helps you get into alignment.
00:43:12
Speaker
Rolfing is a very, very deep modality where the practitioner, yeah, will push your muscles and like press in different ways to really help to adjust your muscles.
00:43:23
Speaker
your structure, right?
00:43:26
Speaker
So I'm not surprised that you had a practitioner do it in your mouth if they were trying to adjust certain things in your neck.
00:43:30
Speaker
Yeah, I haven't heard of that.
00:43:31
Speaker
Then again, you know, it was just a guy that I met whose name was Ralph and he was in an alley.
00:43:36
Speaker
So maybe it wasn't, maybe this is something- Was it a Burning Man?
00:43:38
Speaker
I don't know.
00:43:40
Speaker
Now that you mentioned it was a guy named Ralph, we just put his hands in my mouth.
00:43:43
Speaker
I take it back.
00:43:44
Speaker
Ralphing, yeah.
00:43:47
Speaker
Ralphing.
00:43:48
Speaker
Yeah, watch out for Ralphing.
00:43:50
Speaker
It was a while ago.
00:43:54
Speaker
Well, I feel like you guys have a lot to share, but maybe we should wind up and figure out a spark that we'd like to leave people with.

Overcoming Skepticism Towards Alternative Healing

00:44:04
Speaker
I'd like to leave with the idea of if you are identifying with my elements of skepticism, that I'm really benefited from talking to people I trust and having them share their experiences.
00:44:18
Speaker
Like as I've listened to you two tell these firsthand experiences of really beautiful experiences with crystals or with Reiki, that helps me to bypass old stories of
00:44:33
Speaker
eye rolling or whatever and it makes me really want to to to open up and so i i i'm appreciate these stories and i appreciate the the getting to to really be open to other people's experience and and also and reminding myself that um my own thoughts are in the way of it and so that's that's my final spark
00:44:59
Speaker
How about you, Yanus?
00:45:02
Speaker
I'm reminded of a saying, and this is not to belittle anybody's real, very real journeys into healing.
00:45:09
Speaker
We've all experienced physical ailments, emotional ailments that are very real.
00:45:16
Speaker
That said, there is a saying that does resonate with me in that the only thing that needs to be healed within us is the belief that we are not already whole.
00:45:27
Speaker
So getting, you know, so this, this journey of healing that we're all on, it's important to get to a place where you realize like, you know, we're not, we're not broken, but we all could use a, a tune up or an adjustment, um, or a realignment.
00:45:44
Speaker
And there's ways to go into that.
00:45:46
Speaker
So really, really dropping the idea that we are like these broken individuals, uh, that we need to, we need to fix ourselves.
00:45:53
Speaker
It's like, no, we, we can just like, just like a vehicle, just like a car.
00:45:57
Speaker
It sometimes needs a tune-up, needs an oil change, needs all sorts of procedures to keep it functioning.
00:46:03
Speaker
Our bodies are the same.
00:46:04
Speaker
Our emotional bodies are the same as well.
00:46:07
Speaker
Going into it with an idea like, okay, just a little tune-up.
00:46:10
Speaker
Sometimes it's a major tune-up, but there's nothing wrong with it.
00:46:14
Speaker
Feeling like we need these things or that we would benefit from these things.
00:46:17
Speaker
So really going into it with that, with a, you know, a positive mindset and, you know, having skepticism, sure, but, or not, but, but, and realizing like there's nothing wrong with, you know, needing a little tune up on occasion, sometimes a major tune up.

Gratitude for Acceptance of Alternative Healing

00:46:32
Speaker
I'll just share a spark for me of how grateful I am that we live at a time where there is so much accessibility to many, many, many different types of alternative healing modalities, right?
00:46:47
Speaker
Sound healing, for example, is becoming much more recognized, much more available, much more just...
00:46:56
Speaker
a part of the world that we live in, right?
00:46:59
Speaker
Sound healing, maybe 10 years ago, even was so like, what, what's that?
00:47:04
Speaker
You know, now you can see them, you can see a sound bath and sound healing.
00:47:08
Speaker
Sound healing is even incorporated into some hospitals now, which is just amazing.
00:47:14
Speaker
And I just, yeah, I just really want to
00:47:16
Speaker
yeah, celebrate that we, with our healthy skepticism, we have opportunities to try so many different things to support our wellbeing.
00:47:26
Speaker
Right.
00:47:27
Speaker
And so, yeah, I love, um, the place that we live in Southern California, there happens to be many, uh, alternative healing modalities, but I see more and more, uh, available out there in the world and it's a hot topic.
00:47:39
Speaker
Yeah.
00:47:40
Speaker
So yeah, let's keep our systems cleansed, cleared, purified, keep that stream running, right?
00:47:48
Speaker
Receiving support from practitioners and from workshops and from these opportunities to help to remove the debris from our fields, mind, body, spirit.
00:48:01
Speaker
And speaking of that,
00:48:02
Speaker
We happen to have a practitioner among us.
00:48:05
Speaker
So Betsy, how could people find you and get more in tune with the tools that you offer?

Betsy's Offerings and Sustainable Happiness

00:48:13
Speaker

Speaker

Speaker
So that way we can have sustainable happiness.

Speaker
I am healthy, vital, and whole.
00:51:15
Speaker
Repeating this affirmation, I am healthy, vital, and whole.
00:51:19

00:51:33
Speaker

00:51:37
Speaker
Sing it.

Speaker
Say it.
00:51:39
Speaker
Let it fuel your day.
00:51:41
Speaker
I am healthy, vital, and whole.
00:51:43
Speaker
And then watch yourself just rise and rise and rise and feel great.
00:51:48
Speaker
Stay sparked out there, you guys.
