But the first team to depart are Gary and Matt, which are the father-son team, and they depart at 5.45 a.m. It says, make your way by taxi to Ho Chi Minh. Once there, search for the Golden Dragon Water Theater and grab a clue from the mouth of the water dragon.

Like, usually it's like when you're in a ponytail. Yeah. And you let the ponytail down. But my hair's been straight for like two days. I don't know. here It's weird. It's also 7.30 in the afternoon, well, in the evening, almost 8 o'clock. We usually don't start our podcast recording until like 9 at least.

Finding the Puppet Theater and Challenges

um And so the teams are like getting cabs and these cab drivers are saying that Ho Chi Minh is like two hours away and there's some traffic and stuff like that. So teams start arriving to the theater.

Flight time and biggies are the first ones there and they get the clue. So the theater, it's like a puppet theater, but the stage is like ah ah like a pool of water of water and these dragons swimming through it spray water and they're really fast yeah they move super fast and they're like not that close to the edge either like you have to like reach pretty far and flight time is tall and he was having a hard time reaching that so he eventually grabs it and pulls the little tab out of his mouth they get the clue it's a little bullet And they open it inside is a stamp which has a picture of the Ho Chi Minh City main post office in it. So that's where they have to go for their next clue.

And Gary and Matt are next. They get the clue.

And so all these teams start arriving and getting this clue. Mm-hmm. I feel like the same person. So like right outside the theater, like there was a man that's standing there. Flight time and Big Easy were like, where is this? And he's the post he's at the post office.

And then Gary and Matt come out and they asked the same person. I feel like he got asked by several teams yeah what this was. And he kind of thought it was amusing. And he told um Gary and Matt that it was only a kilometer away.

So they decided to try and walk there. And Gary didn't want to do that at first. He wanted to get a taxi. Yeah. But one kilometer is not that far. i would have said to, if that's the information that we got, I would have said for sure, we're just walking. Because Matt said, like, we want to save our money. That's not very far.

But apparently it was a little farther than that. Yeah. So they ended up getting in a cab at some point and going to the post office. And the flight time and Big Easy are first to get there. And finally, for the first time this season, we have a detour.
Detour Choices and Struggles

Yeah. Because we have not had a detour up to this point. Yeah. So the choices are child's play or word play. um Child's play is make your way to the local park and choose a concrete animal from a kiosk.

Transport the heavy and awkward animal along the bumpy pathway of the park, picking up five colored balloons from vendors on the way. When you deliver the balloons and the animal to the playground, you'll get your next clue.

And word play is go to this hotel and up to the observation desk. down the crowd but oh sorry Scan the crowded intersection below and identify six Vietnamese letters moving with the congested traffic.

Check with the security guard to see if you have the the correct six letters and then leave the hotel and get help from locals to unscramble the letters. It will spell Docklap, which is a well-known Vietnamese word for independence.

it's only six letters. Yeah. And you don't know this when you read the clue but once you get to the top of the building the letters are really bright and obvious. Yeah. It's not hard. Only one team does choose this detour.

Marcy and Ron. Everybody else choose chooses the child's play. Yeah. um so yeah the teams are getting to the theater getting the clue heading to the post office um this is another point where lance and carrie are annoying they like They're with a group of a lot of teams.

Yeah, there was a bunch there at the same time this point. And they're given that bullet, and all the other teams, like, open it and see the clue and get in the cab and go only immediately. yeah And they just hold it in their hand, and they're like, where's the clue? Where's the clue?

Where's the clue? Where's the clue? And, like, Lance is telling Carrie, like, where's, like, getting mad at her for not having a clue. It's like it's not her fault, but... They go back in and all this stuff. Yeah, they ask like people all around the building and everybody's so confused. They're like, we don't know.

All the teams are kind of pretty close together. Flight Time and Big Easy are kind of out in front for most of this league. Then there's like a big group of people. Yeah. And then there's like a couple at the end. So like we said, Marcy and Ron... And Marcy and Ron are separate from everybody else. So they don't really know where they're at. Yeah.

They're the only team team that chose wordplay. So... They go up to the top and they don't have a hard time finding the letters, but they are Vietnamese letters. And one of them, they didn't. It's a D that looks kind of like an O. Yes. And that was the only one that they missed. They got all, they got five of the six, right? Mm-hmm.

But that one did kind of look like an O. So they try it again and they get it right that time. But then they go down from the hotel. and instead of like asking somebody local, like, what are these letters? They like walk around. They're like, let's see if anything stands out. They just look at signs and they're like, they say like, let's just look and see what letters actually what what letters are together the most on all these signs. Yeah.

And then they finally put something together that's like an English word. Old cap. Old cap. And it's like those aren't even the English letters. Yeah. They don't even ask anybody for a long time.

But I feel like if it, if you were supposed to just look around and find the word, it would have said that in the clue. Like, Anyway. So these animals that the, the team's doing the child's play detour are, there's a variety of animals and,

a lot of the teams smartly choose like animals that are like lower to the ground like a lower center of gravity like a sheep or yeah sheep and a zebra and yeah other things like that but then zev and justin arrive and they pick a giraffe and it's the tallest one and like the most awkward one because they say it's the closest to them at the time or like regret the one that they chose um So, yeah, at this time all these teams are kind of chaotically running through the park with these dollies pulling these statue animals and yelling at people, grabbing balloons. It's kind of chaotic.

But flight time and eat Big Easy finish first. And it says, make your way to Dienko 008, 008, which is at the busy intersection of Drong Vien and Drong Lin Trong Kit.

To find your next clue. I rode down two busy streets. Yeah. Because I was like, i don't, yeah, I'm going butcher that. so And um like Maria and Tiffany and Sam and Dan have been working together quite a bit these last couple legs. And at this point, they're kind of working together. But Maria and Tiffany's dolly breaks a wheel.

And Dan is trying to help him fix it. And they're like, no, you go. We don't want you to. Yeah. This you need to run your race. And so he's like, are you sure? And they're like, yeah. So he leaves them. They go get another one.

and then like all the teams are kind of. pulling pulling together and pushing together and one of them's holding the balloons but literally tiffany is doing all the work pulling their animal she has her rolly backpack on the dolly and the animal on the dolly pulling it and maria is just holding a balloon and she's like hurry tiffany hurry hurry up hurry gotta go this way hurry he's like you need to slow down for me a little bit like And she's like, we're in a disadvantage because we don't have a man to help us. it's like, your teammate's not even helping you. that the yeah The teammate you have isn't even helping you. Like, she doesn't even give her ah push or pull at all. She doesn't help her at all.

And to me, it looks like she's really struggling. Yeah. Zev and Justin do drop their giraffe at one point and they have to pick up all the little pieces because it says on the clue, like, you have to have.

If it breaks, you have to pick up the pieces and take it with you. um brian and erica and lance and carrie are the last to get the detour to the detour and they also choose the child's play oh no micah and canaan are the last to the detour yeah actually so they must have got lost on the taxi right there something like that show of much of them um finally marcy and ron get somebody to unscramble their letters for them they They communicate with each other really weird. Yeah.

Because it says they're like newly dating. They've been d dating for a year. Like from a... the internet they found each other in on the internet and stuff but they like like marcy just says weird things yeah randomly that don't really have anything to do with what they're doing and ron kind of just like looks at her and he's probably like annoyed with her but she's like also just like a positive person and happy and nice but she just says like weird things She, at one point in the, after they finished the detour, so they did find somebody that tells them, what was it? And they're like, this is a well-known word. Like this is right. And he's like, yeah. And so they got it correct. And they're in the taxi on the way to the roadblock or the next clue. And Ron says,

And he just looked at her and I'm like, what? Because it makes it sound like somebody would say that to another partner that's been, like, really mean to her. Yeah. know yeah He hasn't been at all. And she wasn't even saying it in a mean mean way or, like, annoyed way.

It was just, like, so random. Yeah. It was just kind of out of the blue. And he just was, like, He looked at her, like, what? And didn't say anything. But i she just, like, does a lot of that kind of stuff. It was just kind of, like, weird.

Yeah. Maybe there was, like, stuff that we didn't see that she was, like, getting frustrated with him or vice versa. But. But based his on his reaction, it seemed like it was very out of the blue for us as well.

Roadblock and Race Progress

and But flight time and biggies are the first ones to get there. And that's a roadblock. And it says, who's ready for a complete breakdown?

So in Vietnam, they recycle almost everything that can be recycled. The team member doing the roadblock must use tools to break down two VCRs and toss the parts into separate piles. When all their VCR parts have been disassembled and sorted, they'll get the next clue.

So flight time is going to do it. Shane and Megan arrive right after. Shane's doing it, then Matt and... This is when Marcy and Ron finish the detour. So I'm pretty sure everybody else has finished yeah the other side of the detour before this.

um And then Flight Time finishes the roadblock pretty quickly. He's the first to leave. And the clue says to go to the pit stop, which is the Reunification Palace. Yeah. so um they have kind of a hard time finding a taxi driver actually knows where this is.

But it's supposed to be a really well-known place because it's, like, where the Vietnam War ended. Yeah. But it probably, on clue. Maybe they don't know English word. Probably doesn't have, like, the actual yeah Vietnamese word palace. So did you, in the stuff that you are going to tell us, is this anything, there anything about this place?

No, not specifically. um Just. Okay. Okay. Well, what are you going to tell us? Okay. I was just going to say. so this is Ho Chi Minh. I talked to you about like a few different things about Vietnam as a whole last time, but we're in Ho Chi Minh, which was known as Saigon for a long time.

It's the most populous city in Vietnam with a population of around 10 million in 2023. um has a lot of rivers and canals. And has 16 urban districts.

Um... It has the busiest international transport hub in Vietnam. It's a large tourist attraction. and Ho Minh, he lived in France as a young man in World War one and who was inspired by the Bolshevik Revolution. and he traveled to the Soviet Union.

He helped establish the Indo-Chinese Communist Party in 1930. And after Germany defeated France in 1940, Ho Chi Minh seized the opportunity for his nationalist cause. He returned to Vietnam in 1941 to organize the league. And at the end of World War II, he seized the northern Vietnamese city of Hanoi and declared a democratic state of Vietnam as president. um He's known as Uncle Ho.

And Shane wasn't, like, mad at her or anything like that. But Flight Time and Big Easy did win a trip to Aruba. Yeah. So Megan and Shane are team number two. um When Lance and Carrie are like a bunch of teams end up finishing the detour kind of at the same time. and It's kind of chaotic.

But what they do if they have they have to give the this lady all their balloons and like put their animal in a stall. Yeah. and get and she'll give them the clue. And like this is another time where Lance and Carrie like it's happening in their face.

Where's balloon Where's that balloon lady? Oh and at the um post office too. They went inside. They like totally missed the clue box on the outside. They went inside. And we're like. Where's the clue box? Where's the clue? Where's the clue? Yeah. They are so like.

I think they're way too focused. Like. They're too like. They're tunnel vision. They have tunnel vision. Yeah. They're way. They are way too competitive. Well. Lance, for sure, is way too competitive and has tunnel vision and he's just being so chaotic and loud and stressful and competitive and not talking to Carrie nicely.

And he's like, well, if that's how you feel, then.

And they know they're last. they like open up the box and they haven't seen anybody all day up to this point so I think they were like still optimistic but they were like, oh no, it's the last clue. yeah And Ron says, I guess I will do it And yeah.

So other teams were checking in. Gary and Matt were team number three. Brian and Erica number four, which they made up a lot of. Yeah. Cause they were like last to leave the dragon. Maria and Tiffany number six. mike Wait, you skipped five.

Sam and Dan are five. Oh, Sam and Dan. Maria and Tiffany number six, Micah and Kanan number seven. And then it looks like these last three teams are dropped off about the same time.

Yeah, Lance and Carrie, Justin and Zev. So they struggle to find a taxi at first. And yeah, and then Ron and Marcy get a taxi right away, as far as we can tell. So they're like the editing is showing them all racing at the same time.

But they're like, tell the driver we're in a race. And he's like, I did, but he can't go yeah faster. Like, there's cars. So, they're, like, at the end of the pack, and I wonder if they didn't have that guy, if they would be...

yeah in a worse spot and you even than they are now but um yeah when they're dropped off there's it looks like they are just like running the grounds and can't yeah there's like different entrances it's kind of like a big property so they kind of don't get dropped off in the right spot and so ends up being team number eight are zev and justin team number nine are lance and carrie that means team number 10 are marcy and rock and they're eliminated Yeah, Zev and Justin and Lance and Kerry were on the mat at the same time. And I think they thought they were the last two.

So when Phil says, Zev and Justin, your team number eight, Lance and Kerry were like so relieved. Yeah. And then, Then Marcy and Ron come up and they yeah are eliminated.

um So this was in 2009. So they dated for like 11 more years. Yeah. And then got married. Interesting. Yeah. um And it was like. And if they were like 59, they would have got married when they were like 70. Yeah.

Interesting. And it was in the height of COVID when they got married. And then a couple months later, um Marcy suffered a spinal cord and injury.

She fell. um But she survived. And this is, so there's like a GoFundMe recovery fund on here that they've had up for a while. So it says, on Tuesday, September 1st, only a month after their COVID-compliant Zoom wedding, Marcy was taking a walk in Golden Gate Park. She lost her balance and had a terrible fall from a cement wall and severely damaged her spinal cord.

She had surgery within 24 hours, um but has limited mobility in her shoulders, arms, and left leg. At present, she can not move her fingers.

um They were both like significantly reduced work hours because of COVID. So they were like, you just like didn't have like full financial. Yeah.

And then there is an update from February of 2025. The doctors never... Like, they said that she would probably never walk independently again. But she has um regained the ability to walk independently, but the fingers in her right hand have limited flexibility.

So it seems like most of her limbs are... ah working somewhat but her hand does not and she was a photographer so that's kind of a bummer yeah um she has the ability to shower by herself she can call an uber visit friends play on the floor with her three grand grandchildren all of whom were born after the accident they have a they go They take their oldest grandson to swim lessons.

And... Oh, after four long years, she set up a studio at home where she can take portraits of friends and family. Watching the joy she still has from shooting photography is a wonder.
