This week Kelley and Jordan go over, "Stomp the Yard." In this episode they get ready for vacation, applaud DJ for his persistence, need Rachel’s father to grow up, and laugh about a movie fact that makes no sense.

Hello. Hello.

Introduction and Welcome

00:00:02
Speaker
Welcome to So You Think You're a Conic Movie Fuckass. And it's a beautiful day outside. When you're listening to this, we will have seen Megan Thee Stallion. Oh, yes. So overall, just it' a great time to be alive. Oh, yeah. Very good. How was your week, Kelly? It's all right. Doing a lot of I don't know if you can still consider it spring. Yeah, it's not June 21. So yes, spring cleaning. um I don't know what got into me, but I'm like, I just have to clean everything. I have to get rid of everything. That's fine. Yeah. so um Like, and I'm cleaning things that like, and like, doing things that like that are the deep clean. So like, you know, the oven and stuff like that. I'm
00:00:58
Speaker
I'm doing the the little carpet rake on the on the and the rugs that

Spring Cleaning Adventures

00:01:02
Speaker
we've got. I'm moving furniture, cleaning baseboards. Oh, that's that's a lot. okay Yeah, i don't know I don't know what happened to me, but like I literally woke up and I looked at my room and then I like looked around the house and I was like, I need to clean that. So i so i've been I've been following the impulse. I don't know when I'll get it again, but I'm just vibing.

Seasonal Preferences: Winter vs. Spring

00:01:28
Speaker
with whatever cleaning bug this is. That's great. I also get the cleaning, but it, I get it very, that it's like maybe once a year. yeah Yeah. But when I get it, I write it out. Oh yeah. Same. Um, cause like, uh, I keep my, I clean my room every week and like, I try to keep like the house clean. Um,
00:01:55
Speaker
But like I don't, you know, do like the the baseboards and whatever every week. I just make sure things are dusted, make sure things are back in. um But yeah, I think I get this cleaning bug maybe like twice a year. I think it's like spring and winter. And that's it. You want to do stuff during winter? That's funny. Yeah, I love winter. I love being cold. I love the rain. Something about winter, I don't even want to be leaving my house in the winter. I love it. If I have to do something outside, it better be Christmas related, because otherwise I don't want to do it. Really? I love dressing up for winter. I love the coats and the scarves.
00:02:42
Speaker
but one i only I only like Christmas time. Other than that, I don't like winter. Yeah, you like specifically December. I like December. yeah Yeah. And then after that, I don't like it anymore. Cause then it just starts raining for months and months and months and just like, please come out. Well, yeah, I'm, I love it. I'm all for it for you. I'm more of a spring or a fall person. Yeah. Yeah. I like fall falls. It falls. Like, um, I think I like fall better than spring only because, um,
00:03:21
Speaker
It's getting colder. It's not getting hotter. Because I can spring. I think it's it's it's harder dressing for spring than it is for fall. Because at least you know you're going to get cold at some point. Or in spring, you know you're going to get hot. And then you're carrying around a jacket all day. I don't mind that. The thing I don't like about spring it is allergies. Yeah. That's it. If I didn't have allergies, spring would most definitely be my favorite. And it's funny because I don't get spring allergies. I get fall allergies. i don't I don't know what it is. Yeah. Everyone, let's petition our local governments to start planting female trees so that we don't have to be dealing with all of these allergies every year. Yeah. And whenever we do need more trees, just bring out the male, like bring them out in like big pots and then put them by female trees and then take them. off Yeah.
00:04:20
Speaker
Just shake them a little bit, yeah and then get them out of here. Yeah, get them out. Bye. And then we'll also get free fruit. It's a win-win for everyone. Yep.
00:04:36
Speaker
But yeah, anything else?

Job Dissatisfaction and Opportunities

00:04:38
Speaker
Mm-mm. How was your week? OK. Yeah. have ah I have a whole situation with whether or not my work laptop will work still. Oh, yeah. You still need to check that out um because I want to go on vacation. It's so bad. um And then I have another one. um another I think towards the end of the month, maybe even early August, I want to take just like a drive down to LA. Just do it. I mean, I have my Six Flags season pass, so maybe I'll just go to Six Flags.
00:05:18
Speaker
And then I don't know, maybe go to like the beach one day or something. I don't know. I know. I have a friend who lives down in, um, down near Loma and like, I want to drive out to see her cause I'm like, I want to, I haven't been down to LA in a long time. Just do it. I keep trying to, but she keeps moving every time I like hit her up. She's like, actually I'm moving out of display. So I'm like, girl, didn't you move in like six months ago? She's like, yeah, I'm like, okay. Well, Kind of love that for her. Yeah, no. She's like, this place no longer serves. Yeah. She's like, this is no longer my my soul is not at peace here. I gotta go. I gotta to go. Love that for her. I love her too. That's kind of me with jobs. Just feeling like, I wish I was that way with jobs. I'm currently looking for a new job right now. I don't even, I don't even dislike this job right now. It just, I'm just looking.
00:06:12
Speaker
I feel like with you, you're just always looking. I'm always looking. You're always looking. What's out there? Because I get i get to a point where I'm good, and then once things start just downhilling very fast, then I start looking. Oh, you're looking too late. Yeah. No. Especially in this economy. Always keep your resume up to date. Always. I think i think that's what stops me. Then I always just look a little bit. I hate updating my resume. I'm not heavily looking right now. I'm just perusing on LinkedIn every once in a while. yeah If I see something that interests me, I'll just apply it there because why not? You are that person that when a worker comes up to them and asks if you need help, you are that person that is just looking. Yeah.
00:07:05
Speaker
It's, just got you gotta, you gotta keep your options open at all times, especially during these trying times that we live in. Yeah. be sweet So yeah. If I get, if I get, if I hear anything from any of these jobs, y'all will be the first to know. And Jordan

Workplace Restructuring Challenges

00:07:24
Speaker
will quit on a dime. Oh yeah, absolutely. I don't care. He does not care. If they can fire me. Immediately, why can't I leave? I don't know right if I am at will Yeah, then why can't I have the world to quit? Yes, I have the world to quit This place will fall apart if I leave but that's none of my business right say my unit will kind of Without me because I don't know what's been going on at my job, but they've been like I
00:07:57
Speaker
restructuring or whatever so they've been moving people to different teams all the time and so they've been giving the people on my team who are still on my team the work of the people that they're moving to other teams yeah yeah i am working on like 140 projects right now that's insane like If I leave, how are they going to divvy up my 140 plus to like, I think there's like maybe seven, eight people on my team left. How are they going to divvy that up to all the people? They're not.
00:08:31
Speaker
That's in insane. So yeah, if anyone for my job is listening, you better give me a raise soon. but So treat me better. Give me a raise. Maybe let me, you work in Florida. for the week And maybe make me fully remote, I don't know. Yeah, I don't know, as long as, I don't know. You know, something. I don't mind that, you know. We can talk. Yeah, open to negotiations. Yeah, open to negotiations. We can bounce ideas off of each other. Yeah, it's all about collaboration. Exactly.
00:09:04
Speaker
But yeah, that's pretty much it for

Balancing Work and Leisure

00:09:06
Speaker
me. It was a slow week and then next week is going to be just me working for two days, one day at home and then one day at the office and then I'm on vacay. Yeah, same. So, I mean, it might be working on that Friday, but like, who knows? And if you are, we work by the pool at that point. Yeah, I was literally thinking that. I was like, I would literally just sit by the pool. And work. In the shade where Kelly swims, and then I'll just take breaks and just jump into the pool. Oh yeah, absolutely.
00:09:36
Speaker
Because, oh, I don't know if I should, I don't know. Here, I'll say it and you tell me if I should cut this out. So I started doing this thing where I will just mass go through applications and just put random times on my tracker. And then I'll just like sit and like watch a movie or play on my phone or something. That's hilarious. I mean, I feel like that's the equivalent of people having like either like the mouse mover. The mouse jigglers, yeah. I feel like that's about the same. And yeah, and then I'll just like move my, yeah, I'll jiggle it myself. I'll just move my mouse every once in a while. Yeah, if you move the mouse. To make it look like on teens, like I'm still on. Yeah, you maybe type something and then just like keep going. Because I'd already been lying about how long it takes me to do stuff. Because I didn't want them to keep giving me more and more work. So that is so fair.
00:10:31
Speaker
So, so yeah, I just came up with the idea one day. I was just like, why don't I just do a bunch of these at once and then I could just go sit down and do whatever I want. Right. Because I'm just sitting here pretending like it's taking me 10 minutes to do something when it's actually taking me like two minutes. a bit so Yeah, they don't even know that. As long as the work's getting done, they don't need the yeah the work is getting done. My numbers are being met. And that's all that matters.
00:11:02
Speaker
That's, you know what? And that's what like, as long as I'm being productive and getting my work done, don't bother me. Yeah, leave me alone. I don't bother anyone else really. Right. So just let me do my work however I want to do it. And like I most definitely will probably be doing that at your house if I'm working at your house. I will literally just in the morning just do like 20 at once and then just go sit out. Uh, when my, when my, when I was able to do that at work, that's what I would do. I would bust out a bunch of work in like the first hour and a half. And then I would get it to the point where like the rest of the day I could maybe like do maybe one or two documents and then like.
00:11:44
Speaker
look at and then like either watch a movie or like do something like shop on Amazon on another browser. It's the best way to work. Right and then you because that you're saving up energy and getting up your will to work again and then you work again for like another hour or two and you're like ah okay I can reward myself with a little bit of like tv shows. Exactly Kelly gets it. No no I absolutely get it. Because why am I sitting here doing performative work just let me do the work And then go off and do whatever I want to do. Because also, if i if I could leave the minute I was done with things, i would I'd be gone by 12. I'd be gone before 12. I'd be gone way before 12. I'd be gone maybe 11. Well, I start earlier than you do. But I'd be gone at 11. Yeah. Yeah, I'd be done by 12. And then what am I going to do for the next four hours? Yeah.
00:12:41
Speaker
You know, I just wish I had like, when I those days that I have to go into work, I wish I had like a cubicle so I can go back to watching movies on my like screen. Like I used to have my old job, but I can't do that because we're like in an open office. All of our deaths are like right next to each other. Yeah. The like program manager, her her office is like right behind my desk. so like i I can't do what I want to do. Yeah. because my supervisor he's like halfway away from me he's like four desks away from me and a little like walkway you're so lucky what can i say because like sometimes i'll be on my phone and she'll like walk like in front of me or behind me or something i'm just like damn she's on me on my phone see but you know my supervisor doesn't care he doesn't care yeah he's he's he says he's like
00:13:39
Speaker
If I walk by your desk and I see you on your phone, that's fine. But if I come back and I see you still on your phone, then I will say something. He's like, the only reason I, i he's like, I will say something is because I don't want anybody else to see me not quote unquote disciplining you. He's all like, you guys get your work done. If you're, if you have to have a YouTube video on while you do it, I don't care. I'm like, yes. She's never said anything to me directly, but in my last, um, what was it my last like review or whatever my lead was like yeah and management wants us to not be on our phones that much while we're working I was just like okay cool yeah
00:14:21
Speaker
yeah But like the work's getting done, so like leave me the fuck on. Right. like If my work was suffering, then that would be one thing. Right. It most definitely is not suffering. Oh, yeah. No. No. I have the most amount of projects out of anyone on this team, and I get it done. I get it. like My inbox is empty every single day. Right. So don't come for me. Yeah, don't worry about it. The work is getting done. Right. But yeah. um Yeah, that's it for me.

Movie Discussion: 'Stomp the Yard'

00:14:50
Speaker
All right. Are we ready to talk about this week's movie? oh Yes, we are. Okay. Jordan's got some comments today. All right. Yeah. So this week we are talking about Stomp the Yard. So we started this movie at like an underground meeting of like dancers. There's some like, yes, dog biting going on. There's
00:15:20
Speaker
Why were there dogs fighting there? I don't know. it's It's some underground thing. There's a lot of stuff going on. Like, sure. They're all in there dancing and having dance battles. Sure, whatever. Why are they also having dog fights in the class? I know. It went from like, oh, this is cute. You guys are like just needing a space to dance. And like there's some people with their cars and motorcycles, great. And there's dogs fighting in a nowhere. And you're like, yeah. It's kind of like those scenes where like the the FBI or whatever go into like a Chinese restaurant and it looks normal on the outside and then they go through a back room and then there's people like doing cocaine or whatever in the back room doing cocaine and playing poker yeah you're like where did this come from right what's happening why is this here it's insane it's a lot it was a little unnecessary yeah so um
00:16:13
Speaker
We see one of the dance groups ah just dominating all the other groups. They are called the Thug Unit. And one of the dance groups that are watching on the side, they finally decide to challenge the Thug Unit. And so um I guess The Goon Squad, who has been watching everybody else dance, comes up to challenge Thug Unit. And they've got some beef going on. Like, you can tell that there's something going on. And so they start the battle, and it looks like there's a tie. Like, there's no clear winner. And so Thug Unit goes to Goon Squad's leader, DJ, and they're like, hey, double or nothing.
00:17:04
Speaker
Like, we gotta figure out who's gonna win this, we're gonna do Double or Nothing. And so he, before talking to the rest of his crew, he's like, yeah, and drops just a wad of cash into this rapidly building um pool of money. yeah So after seeing DJ accept the Double or Nothing, his brother Duran is like, hey, yo, I didn't i don't wanna do this, I don't wanna get mixed up with all of that money with the unit. Do you know how bad of a situation you have to be in for Chris Brown to be the voice of Lisa? Right.
00:17:39
Speaker
right And he made, he was making sense too. He saw like, I didn't want all that money mixed up with that squad like that. But DJ is like, nah, um, we're going to do it. We're going to, we're going to beat them and we're going to win a lot of money and it'll be fine. And so the rest of the crew just has to accept it.
00:17:59
Speaker
So they start dancing again, and it looks like Thug Unit takes the lead until Duran and DJ pull out all of the stops, and they are able to win. The goon squad then leaves, and on their way home, they're ambushed by Thug Unit looking for their money. And during this whole scuffle, Duran is shot, and everyone scatters. yeah We then see DJ in a car in his way somewhere, and he's having flashbacks. the night his brother died.
00:18:31
Speaker
s he it's a lot of fun yeah there's the lot so many close were His aunt and uncle are there to pick him up and take him to their house where he will be living as he attends college. That night at dinner, Nate, his uncle, gives him three rules. He's got to keep his grades up. Um, and apparently DJ's working at the college and he's going to be working underneath. So he's like, you're like everyone else. Like there's no special treatment here just because you're my nephew. And he's like one floor out of line, you're going back home. Any of your, yeah sex for him. But, you know, I mean, you gotta get one straight.
00:19:13
Speaker
The next day Nate goes to check on DJ and when he doesn't find him in his room, he immediately goes to like the train station, I think. And DJ is there and he's all like, yeah, no, actually I'm good. I'm just going to go back home. I can't do the whole college thing. And he didn't even try. Oh yeah, no, he didn't even try. Literally just got there. He literally spent the night and then on the first day of school, he's like, actually, I'm good. Actually, this is not going to work for me. He didn't even give it the old college drive. He didn't even go to class. I know. How do you know it's not working? You didn't even go to class. Right. Like I get it. Class registration and all of that, that's like super stressful. I'm going to make anyone want to quit, but like you at at least got to give it a week. Maybe because mine was online, it was never that bad. Mine wasn't that bad. It was the finance part that was bad. Finance was always rough.
00:20:09
Speaker
I didn't have to worry about that until my senior year. God, I love that for you. good Sad for you. Good for me. Yeah. yeah um Literally, I was getting checks, actually. I was just losing money. I was yeah and i was literally using those checks to go on trips. You were. You literally were. i because literally i would Thank you, Mama. I was making so little money that they were paying my school. And then on top of that, there was extra money that I was getting from like scholarships or whatever. And so I would have like $2,000 per semester left over. And I would just take that and go on a trip. That is so, friz I love that for you, though. A little bit for me, too.
00:20:54
Speaker
Um, but yeah, and they immediately picks up DJ stuff and he's like, Hey, no, I'm not dealing with it. You already gave my sister enough grief. I'm not sending you back to her the way you are. Now you're getting in my truck and we're going to the college. Um, when DJ gets on campus, he's attending truth university. Um, the fakest sounding college I've ever heard in my entire life. Truth university. Truth university. It sounds like, um, it's just as like, corny and fake sounding as like, uh, sky high. Yeah.
00:21:32
Speaker
Um, and when he gets on campus, he looks totally lost, but he makes his way to class registration. And when he's waiting in line, he spots a girl and immediately goes chasing after her. Um, but he isn't able to catch her. He makes it back to the line. And he says that some girl in front of him held his spot in line, um which that's not how that works. would know He didn't even know her, so that was really crazy for him. um And he kind of gets in a disagreement with him. And he, again, sees the brother he was chasing. He decides to just let it go. After class registration, DJ makes it to his dorm and he calls his mom and he promises her that he's going to give the whole college thing a try.
00:22:19
Speaker
DJ then meet meets his roommate, Rich, who invites him to go out to, like, some party, a college opening thing. How long has Nio been in this movie? Also, am I supposed to believe he's in college? sorry yeah Oh, He looks old. He looks 40. He looks old in this movie. um But DJ says that he can't join him because he has to go to work. He then shows up to Nate's office where he puts him to work as campus maintenance. And Nate picks him up after working for a couple of hours and he watches the the rest of the sororities pass by. There's a lot of sororities for this college. Yeah. But I think that might just be a Southern thing. Maybe, I'm not sure. Rich and DJ then meet up on campus and he sees the Pythons
00:23:17
Speaker
doing like a demonstration, I guess. um And he catches a girl that he was trying to chase earlier. And when he tries to go after her, he ends up in the middle of another group pulling up on the pythons. And he gets mixed up with them. And he's not like, you know i don't want know I don't want no smoke. I'm just trying to get through. Sorry about messing up your formation. um And when that's over, he looks around and he's lost the girl again. DJ then watches the two groups face off and the pythons are shown out by the wolves because they've won more championships than them. Later that day, DJ finally manages to catch up with the girl that he was chasing and he finds out that she is with one of the guys with the group that he like parted when he was trying to chase after her. um And so he like lets it go.
00:24:13
Speaker
DJ is then studying when Rich comes back with his friends and they all talk about Rich trying to pledge to a sorority. Also, I do not know the names of these sororities. They were they are known in in my notes as the pythons and the wolves. Oh, I think they're fraternities. Yes, fraternities, sorry. But they're like theta, whatever. I do not know. It's an inconsequential. It doesn't really matter. Yeah, they theyve mentioned it a couple of times. I'm like, I don't. I'm good. Rich and his friends then convinced DJ to go with them to one of the local meet up spots. And DJ is immediately into the dancing that is happening.
00:24:58
Speaker
and is hazed by one of the other members of ah the Wolf like crew, the step crew. And he's immediately like trying to fight people and Rich and the other guys are like, yo, you're a freshman. They're just trying to haze you. Don't worry about it. April then comes into the club. but That's the girl that DJ has been chasing this whole time. And she catches Grant, her boyfriend, dancing all up on a girl. And when she calls him out on it, he just gaslights the hell out of her. Yeah, that was pretty foul. Oh, yeah, no, he's so like, I'm just putting a little flair on it. Like, nah, you were all up on her. You should not have been doing that. DJ then pulls up on April. And when he ah tries to ah to talk to her, Grant threatens him. But he's all, DJ's like, I don't care, dude.
00:25:53
Speaker
DJ then makes his way up on stage where Grant is and challenges him. And when he starts dancing, the crowd is into it. Yeah, he also refused to rip his city. And that was so funny. Yeah. um After the whole ordeal, April tries to talk to DJ about him protecting her honor. And she's like, don't you don't have to do that for me. That's fine. And Grant doesn't like them fighting. And a fight almost breaks up between the two of them. The next day, Zeke, with Grant and a few other guys from the Wolf Pack, come to talk to DJ while he's at work. And Zeke wants him to join their frat and step with them. I mean, he's all like, you know, once you're in this fraternity, we can get you good offers after college. Like, your life will be set once you're rolling with us. And DJ's like, no, dude, i'm I'm good. Like, i'm I'm not here to step or anything. I'm just trying to get through college.
00:26:52
Speaker
We then see Sylvester, who is the the leader for the Pythons, getting told about DJ. But he's not like, he's too street for me. I don't want him in in my fraternity. like He doesn't hold the values that we do. But the other guys are like, come on, you gotta to give this guy a chance. So Sylvester then goes and finds DJ and tries to get him to join the frat. And he's not in DJ's not impressed. when all he has to offer is like brotherhood, when every like when Zeke was trying to say that he could get so many more opportunities after college. Yeah. DJ then sees April and goes to talk to her, but she's not interested. He's really persistent. While they were talking, April mentioned that she was a tutor and DJ
00:27:44
Speaker
goes and finds out what she is tutoring and specifically asks to be tutored by her. And when she shows up to the lesson, she's not impressed. Was he even taking history? I don't even know, dude. They never say what class that he registered for, but I feel like he would have been the type of guy that was like, find out what she tutors, immediately get tutored by her, even though I'm not even taking a history class. He seems like the kind of guy. When the hour is up, he tries to get her to go to lunch with him. And when she says no, he's all like, hey, ask me any question from our lesson. And if I get it right, I can take you to lunch. And he... I don't know if he gets the answer right, but like he like challenges her on how she asked him a question. And I guess that counts. I guess. So he gets to take her out.
00:28:44
Speaker
ah April tells him to take them both to this local bar with some live music and they talk and eventually she asks him about pledging to a frat and she's like I'm not interested in any of that. Later that night they get to dancing and they kiss one another but she breaks it apart because she's still dating Grant and she she's like nah I can't do this with you. um The next day, DJ checks out the Heritage Hall after April told him about it. And it's some kind of museum of sorts. There's information about um past important figures that were part of the sororities at Truth University. um I guess events that had gone on that the sororities had participated in. And I guess he's inspired by that.
00:29:43
Speaker
I guess. Yeah, kind of. Kind of. Uh, DJ then spends the next couple of days doing like normal college stuff, going to school, taking classes, blah, blah, blah. And one night the, uh, wolves show off their new pledges and the Pythons also show up and DJ and Rich are a part of the new pledges for the fraternity. um After everyone is introduced, Grant and Sylvester promise to see each other at nationals. The next day April meets up with her dad who is part of the administration for Truth University and he is immediately concerned about her spending time with DJ instead of Grant. How does he even know? I know. I feel like he's one of those parents that like
00:30:34
Speaker
gets his info from somewhere and like he's nosy about everything. And then we'll immediately talk to his daughter about it. Like but you don't have anything else better to do. Try to run a university than like looking for gossip about your daughter.
00:30:53
Speaker
Um, and she gets upset because she saw like, we're just friends. It's fine. Like I'm, I'm still seeing Grant, even though you're like pushing me on him. April then is upset as she shows up to her tutoring with DJ. And after seeing that he's pledged to be a part of the wolves, she is very excited for him. He then notices her earrings and like he knows that her favorite color is green because she wears it a lot and he's impressed. She is impressed with how um how much attention he pays to her.
00:31:28
Speaker
Sylvester then starts the training for the crew as they learn the routines for nationals. Are they just like fully in the fraternity now? I think so. i mean Okay. Cause I literally wrote down in my notes. I was like, when did they like fully, like I knew they were pledges, but like when were they fully accepted? I don't know. I don't think so. I feel like they did the, the pledge like things and then it's just implied that they are accepted.
00:32:03
Speaker
I mean, they're the only people who played so. Yeah. I guess they kind of just didn't have a choice. Right. good they They're the ones that introduce themselves. So I guess like when you introduce yourself, that's you accepting or them accepting you. I have no idea. And does this fraternity only do stepping? It seems like it. It seems like their whole thing is just about stuff. Where's the like, I don't know, the volunteer work? Yeah, they're supposed to do some outreach. Yeah. the um
00:32:34
Speaker
I don't know the like banquets or whatever they do to read my verse. Charities or silent auctions. I don't know. Where's the homework study groups? Where's the actual fraternity part of this? va but Right. Like I see you bringing your brotherhood and like that is what a frat means. But like, where's the actual outreach part? right yeah This is just a club at this point. Okay, like I get it the ah like, at the Nationals part, they do say that whatever money they win from this goes to a charity of their choice. But like, can you only get away with that on one charity event? like
00:33:16
Speaker
She the University is very, very loose for their fraternities. Yeah, they're very lax with their fraternities.

Sororities and Fraternities: Financial and Social Aspects

00:33:24
Speaker
um Also, am I supposed to believe that this man had enough money to pay his dues? He's literally there at that college on scholarships. On a scholarship. And he works as a maintenance man. because fraternities and sororities are not cheap they're not that's why i never even thought about joining one my cousin was a part of a like i had two cousins that were part of a sorority i'm like just hearing which one i'll cut it out oh you you don't know them but um oh okay i forgot my mom signed it they're two um
00:34:04
Speaker
to my, uh, girl cousins. They, like, one of them would tell me, um, one of them was really into it and the other one was like kind of, eh, but like her mom really wanted her in one. no And so, um, I think during Thanksgiving or whatever, she was saying how much she was spending just on outfits alone for events. Oh yeah, they do have a bunch of events. And like how she's like, I needed a white dress for something. I needed a black dress for another and they said that it needed to be this long on me. I couldn't wear specific tu cuts of dress. And I'm like, you're spending like hundreds of dollars just to get ready for these events. And that's not even like getting into these sororities and then anything else that needs money. Like, yeah I'm sorry. What? And then don't you have to like live in the house and you have to like pay money for that. Yeah.
00:34:57
Speaker
I'm good. At that point, get me ah an apartment off campus. um We then see Grant takes April out to dinner at a very fancy restaurant where he presents her with his grandmother's ring. I don't know if it's as a proposal. I think it was. Yeah, he doesn't it was a terrible proposal yeah he didn't say anything about like, and will you marry me? He's just like, this is my grandmother's ring. I really want you to have it. He puts it on her ring finger before she says anything.
00:35:31
Speaker
um And she's April looks at the ring on her finger and she like looks at Grant and she's like, hey, do you know where who her color is? And he can't get the answer right. And she's just all like, oh, so you don't even know me. Great. i'm out And so she takes the ring off and leaves Grant at the restaurant.
00:35:55
Speaker
um Grant, ah oh, before she leaves though, Grant insults April and he's all like, you will lose me if you keep seeing DJ. Yeah, that was was a weird way to try to keep her from leaving. Right, and she's all like, great. Don't know how he thought that would work. Yeah, he really did. I don't know if that was like a reverse psychology type of thing that he was going for, but he was like, yeah, you'll lose me. I think he thought she was more insecure than she actually was. Right. He clearly does not know her then. We then see the, uh, the pythons are practicing, but it isn't going well. And the group is forced into seven AM m practice the next day.
00:36:42
Speaker
And after that night's practice, DJ puts on some music just so he can dance by himself. um But he does not know that he's being filmed by someone from the wolves. um And he eventually shows Grant the tape, and he's all like, I know Sylvester's not using these type of moves, so we're just going to take them for ourselves. um The next day, April then shows up to DJ's room and tells him that she's broken up with Grant, and DJ comforts her. um
00:37:13
Speaker
After that, grant we see Grant making kind of DJs. He's working on campus. um But when he sees him with April, he gets really upset.
00:37:26
Speaker
The Pythons are then rehearsing. And after some practice, some of the guys are upset that they um when they can't get the moves like DJ. Um, they they're like upset because he's like, you already know how to dance. So, and we don't, this is kind of hard. And he's just like, nah, like just the moves that we're doing don't make sense. Like movement wise. So he tries to teach him some, some dance moves. Um, so, uh, the group decides to to keep practicing these dance moves. And Sylvester catches him one day practicing with the group.
00:38:04
Speaker
And he's super upset about it. He's all like, I can't believe you're going behind my back. And he decides to challenge him to, is it a dance off or a step off? Step off, yes. Okay. Because I feel like DJ doesn't really step off in this one. He just dances. But he challenges. That's why he loses. Right. Okay. So he challenges him to a step off at the place that they were at before. Um, and so that night, um, they face off and DJ and his group are kind of killing it until so Sylvester pulls out some classic set moves and DJ tries to go off by himself to, to challenge the other group. And everyone's all like, Hey, yo, this isn't, you're not doing it right, dude. And so DJ and his group loses and the group is an upset that they didn't work together to to beat them.
00:39:03
Speaker
And he is reminded of how Dron said the same thing um the night that he died. And he apologizes to the team, which is accepted. And so it was like, hey, we might need some of those moves in our routine if we're going to win against the wolves. Yeah, although for nothing. and We then see the wolves incorporating some of DJ's moves. And we also see the pythons doing the same thing.
00:39:31
Speaker
April and DJ are hanging out when Grant finds out from one of the guys in Python about the assault charge that DJ has. DJ then brings April to his aunt and uncle's house for lunch, and it is going well until they learn about her mom's passing and how she is the daughter of ah Dr. Palmer, which triggers something innate, but like no one says anything about it. was really weird Also, it was so funny that they were just sitting outside eating on a folding table.
00:40:10
Speaker
i think I think in the background, too, you can actually see that they do have outdoor patio furniture. Yes, they had outdoor patio furniture, but they were on a folding table. We need this plastic white table and to eat on in the backyard instead. With the Dollar Tree covering, yeah. And it's not even a good covering. I don't think there's like even really decorations on the table. It's just them with the plates. and It's just the plates. So after that, DJ starts silly practice um for the pythons and they start to nail their routine.
00:40:52
Speaker
During class Monday, DJ is pulled out of ah class to go to the dean's office where they want to talk about how he lied about not about lied about having an aggravated assault charge. I guess he didn't mention it. um I don't think you have to mention it. You have to. Exactly. I wrote that too. I was like, do you have to mention that? I don't remember them asking if I committed a crime when I applied to college. I don't think so because that doesn't mess with any of your academic, unless it's, I guess it's a section of college. Unless it happened at school, I don't understand why it would matter. Yeah, why they needed to know.
00:41:35
Speaker
If someone knows, let us know. but like i ah right Granted, I mostly only applied to California schools, and maybe that's why they didn't ask. Like let us know because I feel like there's no reason for them to ask that. Yeah. I don't know if Georgia does things differently. Yeah. or This is just some weird plot device to to get, you know, some conflict for DJ. But yeah, this, this academic board is like, yeah, we have to suspend you because you didn't tell us about an aggravated assault. Right. I don't know. Like aggravated assault isn't even really that bad. Yeah. Yeah. Also, yeah. Like,
00:42:18
Speaker
Well, yeah, he was, I think he was charged as an adult, but even the aggravated assault is... It's not that bad. It's not as harsh. I don't even think that's a felony. So... It is. It is? Yes, it is. Oh, okay. But it's like the lowest degree of felony. Okay. Yeah. Not bad. Yes, not bad. He didn't even go to prison, so leave him alone. No, he probably went to jail for like a couple of days, probably on probation, maybe. Maybe. Even though even but he's he went to a different state, so he probably wasn't on probation. I don't know. I don't know how probation works, but I don't know how it works in different states. um But yeah, he is suspended for about lying to the college, um and so they suspend him for the rest of the year. And
00:43:11
Speaker
After that, when he tries to show up to the fraternity, he ignores everybody until Rich comes to check on him and he just tells him that he's been suspended. And then he gets a call and he leaves immediately. DJ then shows up to Dr. Palmer's office where he says, as he's part of the administrative like board, ah he has the power to reinstate him. but on the condition that he stopped seeing his daughter April. That is a Title IX violation. Also, um looking up aggravated assault, you you mostly need a weapon for that, and he didn't have a weapon. He did not have a weapon. There was a weapon present, but he's not the one who used it, so I don't know how he got charged with aggravated assault. Whatever. Yeah.
00:44:09
Speaker
yeah back to this chancellor or whatever he is. Um, yeah, cause they never say like his title. They're just all like, yeah, he's, he does. He's part of the board and we're like doing what though? sir What are you doing? Yeah. What is, what is your official title here, sir? What are you doing here? Can you state that for the record, please? Yeah, for the record. Um, but yeah, dr. Palmer gives DJ the ultimatum of seeing his daughter. for being reinstated in college and DJ's like, yeah, no, I don't, I genuinely don't care. It's your daughter's decision with her, whether she continues seeing me or not. So I will not be taking your deal. He's like, talk to her about this. Yeah. It seems like you have the issue more with her than you have it with me. So you need to get yourself straight. yeah what what Yeah. Come back to me when you get an answer.
00:44:59
Speaker
hey Right. And if she doesn't want to see me, then at that point she's going to tell me and you're not part of this anymore. Exactly. Um, DJ then goes back to the front and tells him, tells everybody what happened and everybody is worried about competing for nationals because he won't be there to help them. And he's all like, y'all are worrying about nationals and I'm worried about my future. Like we're worrying about two different things here. Um, April then tells DJ, uh,
00:45:30
Speaker
Well, April's dad then tells her about DJ's past and how he has an aggravated assault charge and whatever. And she goes to see DJ to talk about it. DJ then confirms things about his past. And when she asks why he's leaving, he's all like, you should ask your dad. DJ then goes to his aunt and uncle's house and tells them about what happened. And um Nate says that it's actually his fault that this is happening. Jackie then explains that she was dating April's dad when they were in college, but she met Nate and broke up with April's dad and dated and married Nate instead.
00:46:14
Speaker
which i don't know how how that kind of beef affects this but apparently it does like what does that have to do with him like what is going on here right those are two very separate issues since when are we taking our personal stripes out on children like what's going on here also it's not even like um it's not even their child yeah it's not even their a child that
00:46:40
Speaker
like do you know how how petty you have to be to first off go after someone's child and then secondly go after someone who's not even their child also this man had i'm assuming a happy marriage and a daughter who he involves you didn't move on by now right it's been like 20 plus years let it go let it go like seriously like oh my gosh i i feel actually insane I feel like maybe because I have not been in love to that degree, but like I feel like after 20 years, I would eventually just get over it. I feel like the minute that relationship's over, sure, you can mourn it and like handle it your own way as long as it's being healthy to yourself and others. But this man got married. That means he clearly moved on yeah at some point. I don't know why this triggered
00:47:38
Speaker
like him going, like reverting 20 years to having a grudge, but. Yeah. Yeah. I know. Maybe let's go see a therapist. Yeah. Some of y'all are weird. You're weird. Some of y'all like, like those guys that like stalk their first girlfriend that they're like in love with still and everyone's like, bro. Yeah. If someone doesn't want you, let it go. Right. Why? Let let it go. Right. Why would you want somebody who didn't want you? Exactly. I'm sorry. There's, there's no point in you trying to quote unquote convince them to take you, but let it go. Right. Right. That's just hurting yourself more than. yeah Um, but anyway, um, the stamp championship is here and the pythons and wolves are both there to compete.

Climactic Moments in 'Stomp the Yard'

00:48:33
Speaker
And Sylvester tries to encourage the group after seeing the wolves come in all like pumped and whatever.
00:48:39
Speaker
Uh, Jackie then goes to see Dr. Palmer and, uh, she's like, dude, you gotta let this go. Like my nephew is trying to do the, like the right thing here. He's going to college. He's cleaned himself up. This has nothing to do with how I dated you for, I don't know, a little bit in college. Um, but he's like really stuck on it and, um, He's all like, you made a mistake marrying Nate and like you could have had a better life with me, blah, blah, blah, which is crazy. Um, right. Oh my dude, please. Like this man clearly did not love his wife. Right? Like, did you love that woman at all with this? I know. Or in the back of your mind, were you always hoping that this other woman would come back after being happily married with her husband? Dude, crazy.
00:49:34
Speaker
um And April overhears the whole conversation and cuts in the middle and confronts her dad about um picking her own future. And he's all like, I'm just trying to look out for you. I'm trying to protect you. But she's like, no, that's not what you're doing. Like, just let me make my choices.
00:49:54
Speaker
The competition starts and a bunch of different groups get to perform. And April races to DJ's at an uncle's house. um right as the finalists are announced at the step championship. April tells DJ that he knows about the offer that her dad made him and... Because he told her. that was That's what I thought was really weird. She was like, I know about what my father did. I was like, yeah, he told you. right like Did you forget at one point? larry right Did you hit your head, sweetie? because right
00:50:33
Speaker
but Have you eaten today drinking water? Yeah. Because I most definitely told you that. Right, I did. um But DJ is not in the mood. And he's all like everything I touch falls apart. I don't want to give this college thing a go anymore. That was my brother's deal. um But she then tells him that her dad has changed the board's decision. So he's no longer suspended. um And she encourages him to stick with college and with everything to honor his brother. Yeah. And also that is a problem. The fact that one man was able to sway every single person's vote on whether or not to keep this child in college. That's crazy. They need to rectify that now. They need to come up with like a system because that's not looking great. It's not like he's not a president or anything from what we see. No.
00:51:32
Speaker
He's just some sort of academic academic advisor, advisor, or whatever that man is. whatever We then see the Wolves and the Pythons are getting ready for the finals because they are the two that were chosen to to battle it out for spot number one. The Wolves then perform first and the crowd absolutely loves them. And ah after their performance, the Pythons have some words for the Wolves. When DJ shows up and says that he's been reinstated, so he is able to participate in the the championship. Yeah. Sylvester then hypes up the guys before they all go out on stage. And Jackie, Nate, and April all show up to watch the performance.
00:52:20
Speaker
After the Wolves have, the Pythons have performed. It is announced that it did. it's a tie between the two of them. So they have to go through one more head-to-head battle to settle the whole thing. DJ is then nominated to take the lead for this and the wolves, they're like, they're not even fazed because they've been studying just the one video of him dancing that one time. We know all his moves. We know all the moves. Sure. Sure. You have one video of him dancing and you think that's all he knows. um But the groups start to dance. First step, sorry. And when DJ notices that they've stolen his moves, he decides to um
00:53:11
Speaker
pull out and put on Duran's gloves and finishes off the whole thing with the signature move that he ended the other dance competition. Yeah, the beginning of this movie with. Yeah. this This whole thing is giving theater kid. look Yeah. Very theater kid energy. Yeah. Yeah, that this specific ending where they go like head to head, this part, it's it's to me it gave like um camp rock kind of vibe. Very much camp rock. They gave Camp Frog. Cause they were taunting one another and it was like, it was getting a little weird. Yeah. They were all taking this so seriously. And it was just like, in 10 years, you're not going to care about this. No, you're not. Please let it go. Yeah. I mean, like try your best to win, but come on. yeah Be a little realistic.
00:54:07
Speaker
Yeah. Cause like, you know, in like a year or two, you're going to look back at the performance and they kind of laugh at yourself from what happened. Um, and that's normal, but yeah, they took themselves so was seriously in this moment. So seriously.
00:54:22
Speaker
Um, after that, we see that the pythons are named at the champions and everyone celebrates. And we see that the photo taken that night at the championship is hung up in heritage hall. And, uh, that is the end of the movie. Yeah. Are you ready for some movie facts? Yes, I am. Excuse me. Um, there aren't too many. Um, first one in the step tournament, there was about 2000 extras used as the crowd.
00:55:05
Speaker
But they didn't know that they were filming for a movie, so all of the cheering and the booing is actually real. What? yeah What did they think they were there for? I don't know. They they were just like, come in here. Sit down. Watch this. much that Watch There may or may not be cameras in the in the audience. Don't worry about it. Sign this waiver. There might be cameras. ah Exactly. You also might be hearing us say cut. Just ignore that. justt Don't worry about it. this is no
00:55:40
Speaker
um Second ah movie fact is that during filming and practices, they actually kept both of the quote unquote fraternities apart at all times so that the routines would be secret and the actors could develop a strong sense of competition. Okay. Yeah, okay.
00:56:02
Speaker
Uh, the original title for this movie was just called Step In. Step In. Yeah. Okay. Yeah. And yeah, that's it. That's all the movie we fact yeah that's it. Yeah. Well, cause the other ones are just all like, um, these two people were part of this, uh, TV show together later on or, uh, Famous R&B singers, Neo and Chris Brown, are both in this movie. Like, yeah, no, we get it. Yeah. And you can barely say that Chris Brown is in this movie. Yeah, he's he's here for like a total of five minutes. In total, about five minutes. And half of those five minutes are just flashbacks. Yeah.
00:56:51
Speaker
Which by the way, there's like four flashbacks in this movie and it's all of the same scene. It's the same scene. It's them walking by a train track. I think every time we see it just gets a smidge longer. You get just like one or two more lines of dialogue and that's it. And that's it. Okay, Jordan, here's the question. Is this movie iconic? No, there's better dance movies out there.
00:57:21
Speaker
Yeah. There's that part of the dance movie out there. This movie has quite a few problems in it. The writing is truly terrible. Also for a movie that's called Stomp the Yard, I feel like there's not as much stomping in the yard as there could have been. No, not at all. Um, yeah. we I found this movie from, I think there was like a ah clip on TikTok and I was like, oh my gosh, I totally forgot that Stomp the Yard existed. Let me put it on my movie list. I never forgot about it because as a Black American, when this movie came out, we were all very upset.

Chris Brown's Role Controversy

00:58:03
Speaker
Remember, this was a long time ago. We were all very upset that they killed Chris Brown in the first five minutes of the movie. Oh my gosh, yeah. I remember everyone being so open arms about that.
00:58:17
Speaker
because they used him to promote the movie, like heavily. And he's only the first five minutes of the movie. Yeah. And well, and even then, like the first couple of minutes of the movie that he's in, it's all very shaky camera work. It's dark. oh yeah it There's so many cuts. it' It's insane. yeah Yeah. Yeah. This, this came out in 07 by the way, guys. where Damn. That's the year my sister was born. What? What? Yeah. Oh my gosh. That's so crazy. It's weird thinking about like 2000s babies being like... Almost adults. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, some of them actually are like adults adults. Some of them actually are adults. Yes. Um, but yeah. Sorry, Stomp the Yard, you are not iconic. No. Okay, Jordan, what are your recommendations for this week?
00:59:13
Speaker
Okay, my first one is part two on the run by Jay-Z featuring Beyonce. okay one of One of my favorite um duets from them. um I really enjoy it. um I actually don't think they've ever made a bad song together, if I'm gonna be quite honest. I really like this song. A second one is All Right by Victoria Monet. Really good. The music video just came out this week. Really good music video. Really good.
00:59:53
Speaker
um she's really good She's a really good dancer. when this When this album first came out, I already said that this was one of my favorite songs. This album also coincidentally came out. when I was at Kelly's house the last time. Yeah, it did actually. um So it's kind of full circle that the music video comes out like right before I go back to Kelly's house. But yeah, it wasn't all right. And go listen to all of Victoria Monet's music. She has really good music. And then my last recommendation is Got Till It's Gone by Janet Jackson featuring Q-Tit and Joni Mitchell.
01:00:38
Speaker
It's one of my favorite Janet Jackson songs. I really love it. Kelly's dying. Sorry. But she's fine now. Yay. Um, yeah. Love Got Till It's Gone by Janet Jackson. Also love that album. The Velvet Robe album is very, very, very, very good. That is a good album. Which is exactly why I still need to see Janet Jackson live. But you know, whatever. But yeah, that's it for me. Alrighty, so I have, I think I just have two, let me just, sure yeah, I have two recommendations. um They're both D and D related.
01:01:22
Speaker
um So the first is. D and D. You're gonna have to remind me every time, because I was like, do not disturb. um I was like, what kind of freaky stuff are you on? um So my first recommendation is Dimension 20's never after campaign. It's a um like Brothers Grimm, a little more horror version of fairy tales. It was really good.
01:01:57
Speaker
um There were some scenes that were there that were kind of scary. And I have a low tolerance for scary, so take that with a grain of salt. um And my second recommendation is Dimension 20's The Unsleeping City ah campaign. And that one's New York City-based, really funny. there's a One of the characters is a as a rat.
01:02:29
Speaker
Oh, okay. Named Kugrash. Kugrash? Yeah. It's funny. there's There's a mix of magic in New York City, and yeah it's pretty funny. it's ah It's a good campaign, so check those two out. Every time Kelly explains any of whatever she does to me, I'm always just left more confused. Jordan, Jordan, ah these, so some of the topics that I talk about, Jordan is just one of those non-state. Mm hmm. Yeah. It's one of those um those deals.
01:03:07
Speaker
Yeah. Okay, cool. Well, thank you, Kelly. um It's going to take me a minute when I'm editing to like fully grasp those things you just told me, but ah hopefully I'll get it. It can't have been worse than two weeks ago. Yeah, I can't have been worse than that. Um, so thank you so much for listening.
