Introduction & Weather Chat

Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello everybody and welcome back to the Daily Newcastle podcast. My name is Michael Grimeslaw and today i am joined by Ian Mackay. How's it going Ian?
00:00:20
Iain
It's going great, Michael. It's going great. It's not quite so ridiculously hot as I've been sweltering my way through for the last week and a half or something. So I'm feeling more comfortable sat alone in my shop all day.
00:00:33
Iain
and But yeah, it's all right. fine. I'm good. It's a weekend coming, isn't it? That's always good.
00:00:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yes, weekend coming.
Newcastle Plate Day Preview
00:00:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah Newcastle Plate Day as well for those going at Newcastle Racecourse. Started today. Looks like it was a great day and it's going to be a great weekend ahead. I'm there on Saturday, so very much looking forward to that and getting to the end of the getting to the end of the weekend.
00:00:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
Or getting to the start of the weekend, should I say. um But...
Transfer Window Highlights
00:00:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Today we've had a little bit of news, which, to be honest, it's it's news, but it's not news at the same time.
00:01:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
a Transfer window was getting a bit tedious. um And then it but until yesterday, where we announced 45 million bid had been rejected for Anthony Alanga. um who could have saw that coming at £45 million pounds when they rejected it last year, and he was worse than what he is now.
00:01:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
But at 1pm this afternoon, Sky Sports, probably from Luke Edwards, um said that we'd launched a £125 million triple bid for João Pedro, Anthony Lange and James Trafford, which either someone just woke up this morning and show thought, you know what, let's just go for it,
00:01:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
all It's not really just happened all at once and they've just got all the news ready to send out. But Fabrizio Romano also said ah we're accelerating our efforts to get James Trafford. Personal terms are apparently done, but it just seems like a long way around saying nothing's happened really, doesn't it, Ian?
00:02:00
Iain
Well, my initial thought when I read it is not, oh, excellent, there's three signings on the way in. It was, hang on a minute, that 125 million cake doesn't sound like it divides into those three players, not from what we heard.
00:02:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:02:14
Iain
um think I think if you if you left James Trafford on the shelf, you might get the other two for 125 million.
00:02:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, absolutely not.
00:02:23
Iain
But we we're way short on that estimate.
00:02:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, 100%.
00:02:26
Iain
I think if that's where we're bidding, we're lowballing.
00:02:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah,
Newcastle's Transfer Strategy Debate
00:02:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
100%. It sounds like 30 million for Trafford, 45 million for Alanga and 50 for João Pedro. And I know it's... I know it's one of those where you don't go balls to the wall, so they say straight away, um and just bid what they're going to want to you. Low ball them and then try and get a good deal. But it does, it feels a bit underwhelming. I don't know if you feel the same of, oh, we've bid for three players who are going to be good squad players. They'll probably do really well.
00:02:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
um But it's nothing really that exciting. And every price except from Trafford's is low. yeah. Yeah, I'm a bit underwhelmed. i don't know what you think.
00:03:09
Iain
I would not be underwhelmed if but if we had Alanga and Pedro join the club. I think that would be a big step forward. I think they're two starters for me.
00:03:20
Iain
um And Trafford to learn alongside Pope this year and then be a starter next year would be, ah ah guess, what everybody would be thinking would be happening.
00:03:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:03:32
Iain
and So I wouldn't be underwhelmed if those transfers actually happened. But If they've actually put figures on it, then I don't know. i don't think they'll be successful with any of those as we've just calculated. What was it? 30, 45 and 50. That adds through to 125.
00:03:50
Iain
We've already had 45 rejected for a longer.
00:03:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah,
00:03:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
exactly, yeah.
00:03:54
Iain
um maybe Maybe Pedro's just plotted his copybook so much down at Brighton that they're doing a cut price deal. Oh no, that's Garnaccio I'm thinking of. I don't know.
00:04:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah i was going to say, he's one we can get on to later and pray that he never ends up in black and white.
Player Deals Speculation
00:04:12
Iain
one what What about this, maybe hopefully not too early in our discussion to link it to and the thought that Eddie was hinting that he wanted to take advantage of the 30th of June PSR deadline and think therefore something's going to happen before the 30th of June, which is Monday I think, isn't it?
00:04:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, 100%. ah
00:04:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah hundred so
00:04:39
Iain
Is this Trafford deal happening and the other two, the smokescreen that everyone can talk about while we quietly go about discussions and and and grab a winger and a forward from somewhere else using this PSR throwbar.
00:04:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, it would make sense. I mean, Howes said himself, where we wanted to reverse what happened to us last summer. ah um This time we're in a strong edition ah strong position sorry um and we'll be looking to make additions to the squad. That's exactly what he said.
00:05:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And I think when you look at it it, it's one of those where Trafford, Burnley are one of the teams in trouble. They've just signed a goalkeeper. They're spending despite being in trouble. So they know a big sale is coming.
00:05:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
which tells you Trafford is probably on the way. um Either that or there's a surprise sale of Marcus Edwards, maybe, who's the only other player I could think of that would get that kind of fee. um But it looks more likely to be Trafford. And then...
00:05:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
The other team in Danger's Villa. um And we've mentioned, we mentioned on the the last Poblioni and Esri Conce would be one that we dream of, of being a fantastic signing. The one that looks most likely is Jacob Ramsey.
00:05:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Play left wing or midfield, kind of like Joe Linton, but would you say he's an upgrade on Willock or Longstaff?
00:05:58
Iain
He probably is ah bit, but not enough to excite me at all. I think if we're upgrading the midfield, we want somebody who's going to come in and, yeah, and and to be able to step in for Bruno or Tonali without there being any noticeable dip-off in our team's performance.
00:06:16
Iain
Because in Willock and Miley, we have midfielders who can cover for those two, but we but they're they' never going to push the team further on once they've come on.
Concerns on Player Valuations
00:06:26
Iain
I don't think Ramsey would either.
00:06:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:06:27
Iain
there I think, yeah, well, maybe Ramsey is the smoke screen for it to be Konza that's twinkled out. Konza would, Konza we need. We need somebody in that position. and
00:06:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, 100%. hundred percent
00:06:39
Iain
ah but Nobody's talking about him. Nobody's speculating about him at all. And, you know, he's Gahey's England partner in centre-half the last few games.
00:06:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I think he's one of those players that Villal will just...
00:06:51
Iain
Sorry, Dan Dernst played the last few games.
00:06:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I think he's one of those that Villal, I think he's probably the last player they would want to sell. ah It says a lot that Martinez is one of the players that's being touted as, oh, we'd let him go when their only backup, Robin Olsen, has just left as well. So it it's a bits of big surprise that Martinez has been the one touted alongside Ramsey.
00:07:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
um But Esri Conn say he'd be an absolutely fantastic signer, particularly because we know we're looking at centre-backs. um you know Gay's sort of... It hasn't died down, but it's it's gone very quiet.
00:07:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
I imagine that's because Palace are confirmed in the Europa League after the the relegation of Lyon due to their debt issues. The one that's popped up, and you mentioned smoke screens there, and I think this is potentially one as well, is... ah Giorgio Scalvini ah from Atalanta, who they're saying 60 million.
00:07:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
um I'm not sure if you've heard a lot of him. From what I've seen, he's great. I've also seen he's very injury prone and he spent most of last season out injured. um
00:07:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
For me, this stinks of another situation like Niccolò Barella last when we got Tonali. And I've got a feeling we're going to end up with a centre-back
Centre-Back Options & Italian Clubs
00:08:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
we've not been linked with at all, but...
00:08:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
What do you think? Is it one of those do you think would maybe stay British? and or do you think maybe we'd go elsewhere in the market for a centre-back? Because it's a hard position to fill.
00:08:19
Iain
but I think they'll talk to Gahey first. And if Gahey's looking for first-team guarantees, he probably would get them from us, whereas he wouldn't from Liverpool, depending on where Canate goes.
00:08:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:08:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, 100%.
00:08:40
Iain
But I think if Palace still talking about £60 million, £70 million, think we'd move on from it. um
00:08:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, 100%. hundredin
00:08:48
Iain
the If they're talking about Scalvini as a smokescreen, there is a very good... can't remember his name now. and
00:08:57
Iain
Where's this Malek Pat... Giao? Is he at AC Milan?
00:09:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's at AC Milan. others ah It's just come out today that he set a sign for Como. They're basically the new team with all the cash in ah Italy, ah run by ah managed by Cesc Fabregas.
00:09:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
They've got lot of ex-players, a lot of money behind them. They're looking to be the next big force in Italy. And they've announced i think they've announced that he's going to sign for them for about £20-25 million.
00:09:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
So it looks like it's another one we've missed out on.
00:09:27
Iain
would have been that That would have been ideal.
00:09:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:09:30
Iain
And we were there we were there last year for him, but concentrated on Gahy so long that he went.
00:09:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:09:36
Iain
and But there's another, can't remember, what is it Gabia that's also at Milan, who's meant to be a fantastic player.
00:09:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah Yes, yes, yes.
00:09:45
Iain
That's the one. That's the smokescreen one that we'll winkle out. um Sandro will have been on the phone asking if he wants to turn himself into a god instead of centre-half at ah who um a AC Milan.
00:10:03
Iain
Then all he's got to do is tap the plate to the Ucastle.
00:10:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, it's amazing what's happened to AC Milan, isn't it?
00:10:07
Iain
That's my prediction.
00:10:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah They were such a mighty team not so long ago to to have the the dwindling season that they've had. It seems to be happening to a lot of teams in Italy at the minute. I mean, Juventus, obviously they signed Lloyd Kelly.
00:10:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
um So their defence has gone from Barzagli, Chiellini and Bonucci to Gatti and Kelly, which...
00:10:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'll be honest, doesn't really have the same ring to it. But back to Newcastle, because yeah I can't speak too much on Juventus. Back to um James Trafford.
00:10:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah We touched on it just before um on a previous episode. But how can you see the goalkeeping situation going if we actually sign the
Goalkeeping Situation & New Signings Impact
00:10:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
young keeper? Because...
00:10:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
When he was at Burnley in his first Premier League season, he only made it halfway through the season before being replaced with Mürich, who was dreadful for Burnley, dreadful for Ipswich. And then he had such a fantastic season in the Championship.
00:11:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
There's been rumours of Pope leaving, but it's it's too big of a risk for me. What do you think?
00:11:11
Iain
I don't think, I think that Pope is, Pope will probably get Dubravka's number one shirt. I think Dubravka will probably, will go to Saudi because that was all lined up, wasn't it?
00:11:22
Iain
I don't think we'll get a fee for him.
00:11:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's touted, yeah.
00:11:24
Iain
I think we'll just let it let him go. and Pope will stay number one. Trafford will be understudy. Trafford will get a chance for Christmas because Pope will twist something which means he can't, which means he can't keep the place and we'll,
00:11:40
Iain
Trafford will get an early chance to take over the first choice. And he either will or he won't.
00:11:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:11:47
Iain
But who knew that Martin Dubravka could keep Nick Pope out for so long as he did last year by by turning in some fantastic performances.
00:11:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, he had a really good spell.
00:11:56
Iain
Trafford needs to be doing that. Trafford needs to be doing that to win it.
00:11:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I think.
00:12:00
Iain
But I think Pope would still be the number one.
00:12:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, 100%. Mm-hmm.
00:12:03
Iain
and You know, I bet if you talk to Nick Pope, he's thinking that he wants the first team place because he wants to be in the England squad that gets taken to the World Cup next year.
00:12:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, 100%. It's been so long since he actually he's actually had a cap. um He's been called up quite a few times, but it must be so frustrating as a goalkeeper because Jordan Pickford, as much as I hate to say it, is fantastic for England. He's improved for Everton.
00:12:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then obviously you've got the likes of Dean Henderson coming through as well. And managers just seem to favour the younger options, which is quite unfortunate, Popo. But I think he'll believe that this next tournament's his last chance.
00:12:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
And he he knows he'll need to be starting. But I do think you'll get the first 15, 20 games, even if we sign Trafford. I do agree.
00:12:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
Maybe Trafford gets some game time in the Champions League, 100% in the EFL Cup. and thefl But it's it's one of those where he's not going to sign if he doesn't get game time.
00:13:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's a good problem to have, but obviously we saw with Arsenal, Raya and Ramsdale. Eventually one's got to go. um But... It depends. One will fit in, one won't.
00:13:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
But one player that I think maybe does have to go straight into the start in XI if we sign him. In fact, you know what? We'll get to Anthony Alanga in a minute.
00:13:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yes, I have just gave away who it is. But we're going to go to our first sponsor and I'll give away who that is as well.
00:13:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
It is by Anique.
00:14:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
Absolutely fantastic. And it's in the right position this time and like the 30 minute mark, which I left at last time. So I'm being a bit more professional ah today.
00:14:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
But into Anthony Alanga, does he go straight into the start of 11 for you? Or do you think it's one of those where he's going to be embedded in just like Anthony Gordon was, just like Bruno was, but it's 60 million.
00:14:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
You've got to play him, haven't you?
00:14:38
Iain
I think he's got his bedding in time if he comes at that during the pre-season. We have, what, six, seven games? i mean, there's games over in Korea, Celtic, there's the Cellar Cup with Atletico, there's the Spaniel coming.
00:14:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. Yeah. Mm-hmm.
00:14:55
Iain
There's a lot of games to would be bedded in, particularly if they're in a full-on 100% training camp. I think there'll be...
00:15:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:15:04
Iain
ah There'll be time shared between him and Murphy on the right wing. But I don't think you'll see him sitting on the bench and coming on for the last two minutes. once we get to Once we get away at Villa, I think 60 million, he's a starter.
00:15:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
no
00:15:19
Iain
And therefore he will start. um Unless, of course, ah but I've still got a little hankering. A little hankering for the fact that Mbwemo has not been announced a Man United player yet.
00:15:34
Iain
Could that be the shock?
00:15:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah It would be great, wouldn't it?
00:15:37
Iain
Because I think he was with who I would like. I know Tev wanted a Langa over Mbwemo because he thinks he's just so rapid that he fits our style of play so well.
00:15:48
Iain
Whether that is the same style of play that we'd have if we had Jao Pedro kicking around as a number 10, I don't know.
00:15:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:15:53
Iain
But so <unk>ll we'll see all. We'll probably have lots of different ways of playing with this if these are the guys that are but are coming in. But we're ignoring the fact, Michael, we're ignoring the fact that if we keep bidding 45 quid for a langer, Forrest will just say no seven times over.
00:16:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, 100%.
00:16:12
Iain
And if we bid more than that and we meet Stratford halfway at 30, 35, then it's putting us where we've got 40 million on this 125 pie they talked about to go after Joe Pedro.
00:16:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. Yeah.
00:16:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:16:25
Iain
And that is probably just over half of what Brighton are going be after.
00:16:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, they're going to be after quite a bit for Joe Pedro, aren't they? I mean, the you can see the one you can see that they they'd be happy for him to leave. I think that was the case when you saw Danny Welbeck starting most of last season.
00:16:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
um I know that Joe Pedro typically plays a little bit behind, but when you have someone else in behind and Danny Welbeck's always starting, Joe Pedro's not really getting that many minutes. It tells you that...
00:16:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Maybe, just maybe, he's had a bit of a falling out with the manager. And when the manager's that good, Brighton are always going to back the manager. But yeah, it's one
João Pedro's Fit in the Squad
00:17:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
of those. I think you mentioned the playing styles there as well. If Joe Pedro does sign, he's going to be one of those where the playing style is going to have to at least be tweaked a little bit because he doesn't really fit the Joe Linton role.
00:17:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then he's not a winger. So ah what i think might happen is I think we might be in one of those situations where against teams like Sunderland, well, maybe not Sunderland because it's a derby, but lesser teams like Sunderland, ah you're going to play Joe Pedro in that Joe Linton position alongside Tenali and Bruno where you're not going to be defending too much.
00:17:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
and he can afford to to get forward, and he still is a bit of a bruiser. So it does work a little bit in that favour, and then once you're 1-0, 2-0 up, Joe Linton comes in to just secure everything.
00:17:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
But I don't know, it's it's a weird one because he doesn't really fit into the system, and he's not a player that I really would have picked for Newcastle for anyhow. ah None of it really seems to add up, but he's ah he is a good player, isn't he?
00:18:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's a very good player.
00:18:05
Iain
ah Well, yeah, I've looked at it. He's always a threat whenever we played against him. um He was always a threat. And I've looked at a little bit more since we've been in for him and he just looks he looks really good, actually.
00:18:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:18:19
Iain
Brazil International, of course, so he'll be mates with Bruno and Joe Linton straight away.
00:18:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Bruno and Joe. Yeah. 100%. I think it's it's one of those as well.
00:18:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's one of the only people that Fabrizio Romano has got a transfer wrong on after the old here we go ah that he always tweets.
00:18:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
He put it out for when we were going to sign him from Watford for 25 million and then Brighton came in with an extra 5-10 million and ah we wouldn't match it. ah And because we didn't match it, we've ah ah we probably signed someone less let's say we signed someone just as good um afterwards.
00:18:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
I can't remember who it was, but could have saved ourselves 20 million by just paying an extra 10 then. But i think it was the I think it was the Ashley days, so can't really blame them for that.
00:19:04
Iain
it was It was probably the probably a right move to stick with Izak, bring Izak in, I think.
00:19:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
At the time, yeah.
00:19:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:19:14
Iain
Yeah, but again, ah these smoke are these... and It's so so blatantly obvious what we're doing that I kind of counter-intuitively think that we can't possibly be doing all of that.
00:19:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. Yeah.
00:19:27
Iain
And then that that is... That's for the public consumption, while we... beaver away a little bit doing her own thing. What do you think about if it's not a Langa for example but we like to be talking about the fact that it is and that's why we keep bidding what we know is going to be rejected for him.
00:19:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:19:45
Iain
What about a Bakayoko or a Semenyi coming in from Europe?
00:19:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, it's ah it's a bit of an awkward one because Bakayoko, from what I've seen, has had a bit of a falling out of PSV. he's not He's not actually been first choice there either, which so sounds familiar. A player being linked to Newcastle or being at Newcastle, going to the Eribe Divisie in a top team and not being first choice.
00:20:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yankouba Minte at Feyenoord, obviously, was in and out of the team last year. Bakayoko seems to be the same now. They reckon he's going to cost about £30-40 million, which for the price of a player from the Eurodivisie...
00:20:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Maybe it's Anthony Syndrome, where I'm just scared of players from that league.
00:20:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
Donny van de Beek, for example, as well. Timber looks a decent signing for Arsenal, but a lot of players from that league don't make it. um He'd be exciting, which I think is what a lot of Newcastle fans want.
00:20:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Just someone like an Alain San-Maximin to come back. I'm not saying Alain San-Maximin should come back, but someone to excite the fans again. I think Bakayoko would do that, but for me...
00:20:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think you need, ah yeah I'm not saying you need someone proven, but you need someone who either comes from a top team, like an AC Milan, some of ah a top team in a top five league, should I say, because it appears we are good, um or someone Premier League proven for me. And that's an awkward one because usually I do favour the foreign signing.
00:21:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
But yeah, it's a bit it's a bit big of a risk for me.
00:21:23
Iain
The other Premier League wingers we've looked at, they're starting to talk about, and and it's even more money than Mwemo or Alanga, isn't it?
00:21:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, Kudis and Semenya.
00:21:35
Iain
Semenya is 70 or 80 million quid they're going to go after him.
00:21:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, it's bizarre that.
00:21:40
Iain
Somebody's just made made an inquiry for him.
00:21:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
100%.
00:21:44
Iain
and I mean, I would um would be after Eze if we had that sort of money to spend as a number 10 rather than Joe Pedro.
00:21:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
hundred um
00:21:53
Iain
I think Eze is a fantastic player. He doesn't play down the right, though, I don't think, but he can play in the middle, can't
00:21:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, 100%. It's one of those where I know we play with wingers, but realistically, Gordon has played as a number 10. He's played as a false nine, as a striker. He is comfortable anywhere along that front line.
00:22:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I think so is Eberrechie Eze. Obviously, both of them prefer that sort of left side. But I think if you'd said to... um Eze and Gordon, right, you both just play behind the strikers if you're two inside number 10s, still use your width where you can, but make the most of Lewis Hall and Tino Liverment overlapping.
00:22:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, that's a very dangerous attack. And I think it's one that works hard enough that Eddie Howard would be happy with. But yeah,
Tactical Adjustments & Formations
00:22:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
it is, again, a change of a system.
00:22:40
Iain
that like that line of That line up has three centre halves in it that you've just described, doesn't it?
00:22:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah It didn't, but it would work with three centre-halves.
00:22:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
Because I was thinking ah basically the four through three as it normally is, but instead of Murphy and Gordon being wingers, you'd put them inside. A bit like um Man United do with Ahmad and i think Fernandes sometimes plays in that role as well.
00:23:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah Not that that's worked out particularly well for them, so maybe not.
00:23:18
Iain
You know, if you, if you, if you, if you quit, if you quit that, as they're replacing Murphy and then coming in and the wingers being the two fullbacks with two centre-halves, it still leaves the three midfielders to try and fill something.
00:23:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
But it's ah it's one of those two number 10s I think would work very well with Gordon and Eze.
00:23:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:23:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:23:38
Iain
There's an extra midfielder there but you've got two number 10s as well. So that's what I meant about how you'd have three at the back until Linton could sit and tie things in the second half.
00:23:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah It would definitely work. you could you could Tino and Paul should definitely be as further forward as they can be. um And if you even play, sort of not the same way Pep Guardiola does, but with the three at the back, the four almost defensive midfielders, you've got Tonali, Bruno, then you'd have Hall and Liveramento either side.
00:24:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
They'd be mainly bombing forward, but Tonali and Bruno can control the game from deep. it's It's really, really dangerous. And it sounds fantastic, to be honest. But Eze, it would be an Eze coming in and with Palace getting European football, I don't think they're going to want to sell anyone anytime soon.
00:24:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then ah you'd need a great centre-back.
00:24:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
Maybe two.
00:24:32
Iain
i've got I've got an affordable Premier League option who is at the very minimum unsettled at his present scheme.
00:24:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh, I don't believe you.
00:24:45
Iain
But I'm going to tell you that after I've given you the best after I've heard. How's that?
00:24:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh, you going to have to.
00:24:52
Iain

Good stuff. Thank you very much.
00:25:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
Now stop teasing and let me know who.
00:25:31
Iain
and i i like it I'd like to dedicate the original Zencastr advert to our lost friend, Kevin, who's having the whole summer off because he's a new dad.
00:25:42
Iain
He's probably sleeping because he didn't get any sleep in May or June.
00:25:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, i credit to
00:25:47
Iain
and Right, my tease. Yeah, and i honestly, when I say it, it's so super obvious. I don't know why nobody is doing this link because um Wolves apparently enquired about the availability of England under 21 starlet Harvey Elliott from Liverpool but were put off by being cool quoted 40 million now I know Harvey Elliott's not as as Anthony Alanka and I know he's probably not as picky and as well I don't know
00:26:23
Iain
but maybe he is, he's only 20 or something, or 21. um I just think that he played 360 minutes in the Premier League last year, which is four games in total.
00:26:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
He has not much game time, I see.
00:26:36
Iain
And I know it was all in little 10 and 15 minute chunks. So you did see him, but he didn't play very much. Klopp hasn't picked him. Klopp loved him, played him a lot more.
00:26:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, it did.
00:26:49
Iain
he looked He looked good when he came on in the Carabao Cup final. He nearly changed it for them him and Curtis Jones. and So what about that? What about that? If it's a 40 million deal, um forget the 45 to a langer.
00:27:05
Iain
The worst case of that is that you think can go above 50 to try and bring your Jao Pedro in. But he's a right-sided attacking winger type, is he not?
00:27:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, he's definitely more right-sided than left-sided. I think he'd probably prefer to play centrally, but he definitely wouldn't say no to a spot on the right-hand side for Newcastle United, I don't think.
Harvey Elliott Transfer Discussion
00:27:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
The only thing that puts me off there is the £40 million of... I'm not, if i'm put if I'm wanting someone who's, if I'm paying 40 million for someone, I want someone who's played quite a bit a minute. And I generally don't think for Liverpool, he's played more than 3,000 in three years, maybe.
00:27:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
um So that's a worry for me. But he is a very talented player. We saw that last night as the as England under 21's got the final. where they'll play Germany. And he he is a talent. He does look good against us. He scored the goal against PSG, I think it was, for Liverpool.
00:28:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Nearly good. Well, he's the reason they got penalties. So it's one of those where he's got so much potential. But I'm just wondering why he's not been used.
00:28:13
Iain
and you know Did not play a lot as a kid? Did not play a lot as a kid for Fulham? He was on loan at Fulham as a really young lad and played quite a lot there, wasn't he?
00:28:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
Not for Fulham. No, he didn't play too much for Fulham.
00:28:24
Iain
Who was it he'd gone?
00:28:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
He played for Blackburn quite a bit. He had a great season in the championship for Blackburn.
00:28:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think it was...
00:28:31
Iain
Who am I thinking of? Fulham.
00:28:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
um
00:28:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
the rude There was a young...
00:28:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
There was another one ah from Fulham who was very good. They've had a very good youth system around that time. He did come from Fulham, but he literally made two substitute appearances.
00:28:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
um
00:28:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
One on the last day, I remember. He was like their youngest player. um And then Liverpool signed him and loaned him out of Blackburn pretty much straight away where he did really well. um But yeah, he's been at Liverpool since 2019 now. And and it's it's one of those for me where ah would have liked to have seen him get a a lot more minutes.
00:29:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
Um, I do have a few friends who are Liverpool fans and I mentioned the performance last night to them and they said, it's a perfect example of Harvey Elliott where what he can do amazes you sometimes, but he's so ball greedy that when it doesn't work out in the premier league, it costs you.
00:29:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Um, now to be honest, i I'm just repeating what was said. I don't, I haven't seen enough to say that for certain, but a tricky winger who, you know, can do what he did last night.
00:29:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's good. It is worth a risk.
00:29:42
Iain
You're telling me that we are we had are effectively have uncovered a second stouter, Vicky Winger, who's a little bit ball greedy for about £40 million.
00:29:55
Iain
And what we're not going to jump on it because Anthony Gordon hasn't worked out for us. I think that i think that is and think that's something we ought to go for. I think the only reason you've not heard about it yet is he's got a final to play on Saturday. When he comes back next week, he could be the He could be assigning next week.
00:30:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
The surprise signing. Well, to be fair, Liverpool have spent £200 million. they do They're going to need to start finding some cash from somewhere. Kelleher was only sold for, what, £12, £15?
00:30:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, you were saying before last um on Monday, it was ridiculous that we weren't going in for someone of that quality for £12 million. I completely agree. it's you know If they're only making £12 million from Kelleher,
00:30:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
who well i mean Michael Edwards was getting $15 million for Jordan Ibe, and he ended up in like level 8 or 9, so their magic's gone on that front.
00:30:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
But maybe if we could get him for $30 million, I'd be i'd be content. But think $40 million is maybe just a little bit much. ah Particularly when you know there's probably... I mean, Riyad Shurgi from Man City, um he's gone for £37 million.
00:31:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
And thinking, if they're bringing in players of Man City quality for £40 million, surely there's better options out there. We just need to find them.
00:31:20
Iain
Well, I would put Harvey Elliott forward. I think he will i think he'll move because I don't think he wants to sit on the bench for another season.
00:31:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
I do agree.
00:31:28
Iain
I think he's showcased his talents in this Under-21 Championship and I think if Wolves were put up by 40 mil, that's what they were quoted.
00:31:40
Iain
You could go and do 30 million for some add-ons, I think.
00:31:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, 100%.
00:31:45
Iain
and If they're looking to offload, Because the danger at 21 that he won't make it into the 25 Premier League squad, because they've got so many players there.
00:31:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:31:55
Iain
they've got They've got to get rid of some players, otherwise they're sitting as training partners for everyone. And he's probably not earning a fortune, the young lad. He's probably waiting for a new contract.
00:32:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, no, you won't be.
00:32:07
Iain
He ain't going to get one. I think the more i talk about it, Michael, the more I think we should be stiffing after Harvey Elliott and leave the expensive Alanga for somebody else to have.
00:32:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I'm inclined to agree. And I think one of the things that's got me is if it does happen as a deal, I think it'll be one of those that happens really quickly. And just a ah quote that Howe said at the start the window, he said, speed is key for us. And I've reiterated that many times internally.
00:32:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
Speed is key because we need to be dynamic. Now, at the start the window, we all thought, why signing three players in June?
Speed in Transfer Dealings
00:32:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
What I'm looking at that now and thinking in thinking, right, well, actually, what he probably means is from the moment we first make contact to the moment the player signs, it needs to be as quick as possible because people are going to come in.
00:32:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
And we saw that with Mbuemo. We've seen that with numerous other players where we get linked and all of a sudden Chelsea are jumping on it, Man Utd are jumping on it. So... it's It's really annoying, but what do you think? Do you think it's speed is key is more in relation to getting the deal done rather than acting at the start of the window like many believed? Or do you think we just need to be a little bit patient and June isn't done yet?
00:33:23
Iain
ah Well, June isn't done yet. I think something will happen before the end of June because we're not but're not even borderline, are we? We did get 9 million for Miggie and 20 million in for Kelly.
00:33:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
No.
00:33:37
Iain
We've got some money to spend in this PSR window.
00:33:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
Like Kelly, yeah. Yeah.
00:33:43
Iain
And if you think a 50 million player on a five-year contract will only count
00:33:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
Exactly.
00:33:50
Iain
There's 10 million in this chunk. So we've got a lot that we could spend if we do it like that.
00:33:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm-hmm.
00:33:56
Iain
And Hal said he wanted to do that. So i think I think there'll be something that they'll be going for before the end of Monday. and Whether that's Harvey Elliott, I'm not sure. He's only going to be back on Monday day from the Championship.
00:34:10
Iain
Depends how much work Agent Leverimento has done, doesn't it?
00:34:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
Probably quite a lot knowing what, you know.
00:34:15
Iain
I mean, he was one of the first people across Bagging him on the back for scoring that goal last night.
00:34:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, he's been fantastic in that competition as well. I think if it wasn't for that Nick Wolfsmaid from Germany and Harvey Elliott from England, he Tina would be a shout-out for player of the tournament because he has been absolutely fantastic.
00:34:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
um
00:34:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
But we expected nothing else from our little wizard. um But I just wanted to end on one thing, and it's it's something that I've heard quite a lot over the last... two weeks while we've been linked with likes of Alanga.
00:34:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And it's one of those things where people are noticing that Newcastle keep going for Premier League players with inflated prices, but the foreign market is so much cheaper.
00:35:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
Do you think it's one of those where in Eddie Howe's mind, he doesn't want to take the risk with players knowing how strapped for cash we are?
Premier League vs. Foreign Players
00:35:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
Or do you think just Premier League proven is a necessity for a team wanting to be Champions League and at the stage we are?
00:35:21
Iain
Well, I think if... I get your argument there, and I get you're not taking a risk. If you get Nalanga, you know he can play how we want him to play in the Premier League.
00:35:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:35:32
Iain
But where has Eddie really made his name in terms of the signings he's brought to Newcastle? He's done Bruno out of France.
00:35:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
Foreign players.
00:35:41
Iain
He's found Bottman in France. and
00:35:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah Yes.
00:35:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
Italy, yeah.
00:35:49
Iain
So I think you're looking at all of the markets, and I think if you're trying to set some smoke screens up, telling the press, yeah, when they're speculating that you must be in for an Alanga is one way of doing it very easily.
00:36:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:36:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, 100%.
00:36:10
Iain
It'll all unfold. It'll all unfold. But I don't think we're in the athlete Bruce era where, or the Pardew era where, where, where we are in first of September watching Pardew's drugs go, well we're trying to, couldn't get it over the line.
00:36:25
Iain
God, I think we'll make some, we've got that.
00:36:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah You'll just have to settle for Chef Nicucci and Sylvain Marveau.
00:36:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
I know the two never played together, but there were just two players that came immediately in my head. And to be honest, that is kind of offensive to Silva and Marvo because he actually did have half a decent season for us that Europa League season.
00:36:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
But yeah, I completely get you. what We're out of the era of the cheap foreign players coming in to be first teamers, as well as, you know, on that first of September going, well, we tried.
00:36:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's it. It kind of felt like that's what it was last year. Yeah.
00:37:00
Iain
But it doesn't have to be... They don't have to be cheap under the radar ones. Look at Cherky. We know he's a great player. City have bought him, but they spent less than 40 million quid on him.
00:37:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, great player.
00:37:10
Iain
You know? I mean, even when they bought Haaland...
00:37:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:37:14
Iain
know it was a while ago, but...
00:37:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
Ridiculous, the price that was.
00:37:15
Iain
but but yeah I mean, he was a monster.
00:37:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
62
00:37:17
Iain
They got him for 60 million. Yeah.
00:37:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
million. They got him for less than what we got, Izak, which, to be honest, Izak still looks like a fantastic sign against. But for the price you got Enzo Fernandes, you could have had of Erling Haaland and Alexander Izak.
00:37:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
I know who I'd rather have.
AC Milan's Sales & Newcastle's Interest
00:37:39
Iain
So, yeah, the elite, the players who have already shown that the potential to be elite in Europe are still available at much more affordable prices.
00:37:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:37:49
Iain
Whereas we're going to have to go and pay top dollar for Analanga, for Agel Pedro, in the hope that Eddie can coach them into becoming elite.
00:38:00
Iain
But good players are both those are. They're not elite players yet.
00:38:04
Iain
They've only done it for Brighton and Nottingham Forest. So there's not not a lot of European experience there.
00:38:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, definitely not.
00:38:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
this is the
00:38:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah This is something as well on the the side of AC Milan. It looks like they're having a bit of a fire sale. ah It looks like Hernandez is going to Al-Halal for 30 million. Fantastic player.
00:38:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
um We don't really need him, but it's it's one of those that's leaving. And and then ah Rafael Liao apparently going for 60 million. the same amount we're apparently going to pay for Alanga and Joe Pedro.
00:38:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then Mike Maigon, the goalkeeper who was fantastic against us in the Champions League, has been fantastic for years.
00:38:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's France's number one goalkeeper. He's going for less than what we're going to sign James Trafford for. I know Trafford's a lot younger and has a lot of potential, but when you see that market, you are sort of thinking short term is when we're battling for Champions League and we're not sure we're going to get it.
00:39:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
They're the kind of players that you think they could be the difference. But yeah, I believe in the process. I believe in how. It's not one of those things where I'm going to get excited, I think, about Alanga or João Pedro or James Trafford.
00:39:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
But I think at the end of the season, I'll look back on them and go, you know what, they were good signings. It's like a Callum Wilson and um who came in, who, ought to be fair, was excited about. But a Chris Wood who, when when we signed him, we all went...
00:39:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
he'll get goals, he'll do the trick and then wasn't fantastic for us but it sentley it was part of the point that sent Burnley down and it worked in the end and I think that's what this these sign-ins will be they'll work in the end and yeah, I don't know if you have a different opinion to that but just got to keep the faith I think
00:39:45
Iain
No. I trust him. I trust Eddie hasn't got much wrong. and The only one he's questioning, because he was quite quick to go and get Lloyd Kelly, but that was a free transfer that they sold for 20 million three months later.
00:39:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, absolutely not
00:39:58
Iain
So that was still an excellent business.
00:39:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Exactly. It's an excellent, excellent sign-in.
00:40:01
Iain
and Yeah, and I'm just it through. This goes out Friday morning, so our next pod, which we'll record on Sunday night, go out on Monday morning might have a lot of transfer news in it 48 hours is a long time in the last three days of a transfer window particularly PSR transfer window so yeah so that'll be good god yeah like went they were read that out they went that afternoon didn't they the afternoon last afternoon of it
00:40:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. We could have already signed someone. Yeah.
00:40:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, we can hope.
00:40:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:40:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, we know all about that, don't we, elli Elliot Anderson, Yankuba, Minta. Hopefully it's it's the other side this time.
00:40:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, it was supposed to be Gordon by the sounds of things.
00:40:41
Iain
But at least Gordon didn't, because he could have gone.
00:40:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I'd heard a lot afterwards about how Gordon was basically being prepped to leave. um And then we managed to basically get the two offers in for the two younger lads and Gordon was told he'll stay.
00:40:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Obviously how true that is, I don't 100% know, but I heard so much about it afterwards and stuff that wasn't always in the media that made me sort of think, Maybe this is true or maybe it's just rumours. But yeah, glad we're not in that spot this year.
00:41:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hopefully Aston Villa and Burnley will be and it'll lead us getting some great players. And just on a note there, you mentioned Eddie Howe doesn't get a lot wrong. I'm looking at these i'm looking at these top signings for Newcastle and Bournemouth.
00:41:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
And yeah, there are certainly more hits in there than misses. You've got your Jordan Ives in there it ah ultimately.
00:41:33
Iain
ah say You mentioned him earlier.
00:41:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, you've got Dom...
00:41:36
Iain
You mentioned Ive earlier. I was to say you did it.
00:41:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, there's Matt Target, Jordan Ibe and Solanke in there, but they're definitely the worst out the lot. And there's a lot of fantastic signings there. So, you know what? I'm more than happy to trust whoever comes in and whoever does well. And, well, let's just not talk about the Forest goalkeeper was signed for £23 million.
00:41:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
But that's been us for this episode. It's been 40 minutes of us talking transfers. And to be honest, I would do another 40 in a heartbeat. so And I hate talking about transfers.
00:42:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
So I fully enjoyed it, Ian.
00:42:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you very much for being here with me.
00:42:13
Iain
Thank you for being the host with the most.
00:42:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
And we will see you next time. Oh, you are too nice. Goodbye, everyone.
00:42:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
Nope.
