Introduction to the Garage Avenger Podcast

00:00:01
Speaker
This is the Garage Avenger podcast. Right. This is episode number four, isn't it? Yeah, I think so. I don't even know what day it is, to be honest.
00:00:17
Speaker
Welcome to the garav the Garage Avenger podcast. The Garage Avenger.

Podcast Beginnings and Pressure

00:00:26
Speaker
You're like, Kieran, you can start this time. I'm like, pressure, I fucking cracked.
00:00:34
Speaker
a I'm Kieran making tasty beers in my garage. And I'm the tired Justin who's building dumb machines in his garage. We're twin brothers ah sharing the journey of what we're doing in our garages and well, thank you for joining us.
00:00:55
Speaker
That's not the script, Kieran. You didn't put the script up for me, so I didn't i couldn't follow it. All right.
00:01:07
Speaker
That's okay, Kieran. We'll just roll with that. The listeners will just be cringing on the other side. It's fine. Let them cringe. Let them cringe.

Collaboration Challenges with Nerdforge

00:01:17
Speaker
So, Justin, what's been happening? What have you been doing? What's up? but Well, why are you so tired?
00:01:25
Speaker
Well, good, good point there, Ciaran. I've been doing my Good Samaritan... ah What do you call it? Deed. You've been putting a beaten up stranger into a hotel and paying for them to get well. Is that what you've been doing? That's the Good Samaritan story. Sorry. If you've got to be particular about the whole thing.
00:01:54
Speaker
yeah Okay, I'm tired because I've been helping a friend get his YouTube video out. Okay, cool. So he got an amazing opportunity to collab with a big YouTube channel called Nerdforge. Ooh, we know these guys.
00:02:13
Speaker
Yeah, like I know these guys, anyone who doesn't know Nerdforge, yeah, they basically do like fantasy cosplay stuff. But ah the head sort of girl that's on their channel, Martina, is pretty cool. And yeah, she's pretty talented as well.
00:02:31
Speaker
And he was approached a couple of months ago to do this project. And he kind of left the video up to like last minute. So he he's so to make it clear, he 3D prints stuff. And he's going to be ah the one helping me with this World Rally Car project that I've got coming in the future.
00:02:57
Speaker
And he's just been an amazing help in my channel and a great friend. And I thought, you know what, he really needs my help here because he kind of sent me a draft of the video like on Thursday and I watched it and went
00:03:19
Speaker
Not good. We need, but I need to help him here. So it's really hard to like criticize other people's work because and like, I know how much work I put into my videos and someone be like, eh, that's shit. It's not a good feeling. So in this scenario, the, the, um, the video is the, you know, metaphorical beaten up stranger, naked beaten up stranger that you were helping.
00:03:49
Speaker
Yeah, yeah Yep So we I got there about like five o'clock yesterday afternoon and He drove me home Maybe like 1 1 30 in the morning That's that's commitment I like it, bro But I'm really happy with the result compared to what it was. I think it just changed the whole feel. I think we got a good idea of where to go for his future videos as well.
00:04:24
Speaker
um He's an amazing creator. He like, his attention to detail is really good. He just hasn't had a lot of practice making videos. And, you know, I just really wanted to help him with that. And I hope it just, this is like a stepping stone for him because, you know, to, to be able to work like CoLab with Nerdforge is pretty cool. And ah his girlfriend makes these amazing, like ah plushy toys and stuff like that. Like,
00:04:53
Speaker
custom unique plushy toys. And I've seen the early release of the nerd torch video. um That hasn't been released yet. And like he's on camera for like four minutes of their video. It's it's pretty impressive actually. um So for them to give so much time to him. I think, you know, this could be really good for him. And i I'm really hoping that this works out and that the video I've helped him with. Well, something will happen from it. Yeah, cool.

Evolution of Garage Avenger Channel

00:05:28
Speaker
But I have to say, though, this is not the first video I've edited this week. Unfortunately, and that's part of the YouTube game, especially when you don't have a team behind you.
00:05:42
Speaker
is editing. And so that's what's been going on this week mainly is that I've been editing the go-kart video, the ah hand truck go-kart video. um And to be honest, it's, I find this really hard, not the the actual work that works fine, but emotionally I find it hard. It's a funny thing.
00:06:10
Speaker
Cause you put like months and months of work into a project, especially this one that's been over summer and everything with all the family commitments and stuff. And then now you got to the end and now you've, you're editing the video. And I think you come to a point where you realize like, Oh man,
00:06:29
Speaker
Like this is the end of the project. You have like these kind of weird emotions around it. Like, so what am I going to do now? um Is that like rocking in a corner afterwards? Kristin hold me.
00:06:50
Speaker
ah Okay. Rocking the corner. No, but Kristen hold me. Yes. Like, why would you want that? like ah any Any chance to get some physical touch there? That's me there.
00:07:07
Speaker
She's like, you don't want to help my post video depression. yeah She's like, let me guess.
00:07:17
Speaker
Yeah. So that's been that's been a journey for me. And to be honest, but I want to talk about the video. I think it turned out really good. um It's a bit different though. Like you've changed the format though, haven't you? Yeah. So this is ah this is the thing that's been going on. So I've actually edited two videos of my own this week. ah this The second one I actually just finished on Friday.
00:07:43
Speaker
and it's a little different as well. It's uh the title of the video is going to be garage avenger is dead long live garage avenger uh and this is a really short video uh it's about two and a half minutes i think and it's just briefly outlining the change in my channel uh so i don't think i've really talked about this very much but So I felt like a lot of my videos are like these funny, you know, I'm i'm a kind like man and you know, mic key like they are fun.
00:08:20
Speaker
Right. Yeah. But what I found, especially after I did the two hour long video that I created, like um about my journey so far, you know, I kept on looking at it and i I laughed and I had a lot of like, I looked at all the things I'd done and I thought this is so amazing to look back on this.
00:08:42
Speaker
But then when I went to make this video, started making this video, I was like, I'm just tired of like hafting to find jokes. Like that isn't my natural state to be like the funny guy. Like don't get me wrong. I think about funny shit all the time in my head, but then to be able to put it in a video constantly, to like constantly think, oh, I need to add humor in here because like it's been too long without a joke. Right.
00:09:14
Speaker
There's only so many dick jokes you can actually have in a series of videos.
00:09:21
Speaker
oh Sorry. What do you mean, dick jokes? I'm clearly ah more sophisticated than dick jokes, Kieran. Clearly, I'm not more sophisticated than dick jokes. Damn it. I just think about all the videos I've watched over the years and the amount of penises drawn in the background or like something like that.
00:09:43
Speaker
They were my Easter eggs, you know, like, and I thought they were funny at the time. I still kind of think they're a little bit funny. Yeah. But yeah, like, I think that that's been where I'm at, as I've realized, like, it's tiring to constantly ah kind of not quite be yourself, because anyone that knows me knows that I'm kind of actually serious on most of my most of my day. I'm a little bit goofy sometimes and like funny sometimes, but like most of my time when you meet me, I'll be quite serious. And I like to talk about serious things. ah So I felt like maybe it wasn't quite reflecting my true self. So,
00:10:27
Speaker
You know, that's been the journey on this, you know, hand truck go-kart video is like realizing, okay, I need to look at myself, what I'm doing with my channel here and be a bit more authentic. Yeah.
00:10:42
Speaker
So that's what I've done. I've created this video called Garage Avenger is Dead, long live Garage Avenger. It's like a dramatic, dramatic take on on on my change in the channel, but it just lets the audience know what's what's happened in my own brain and what's coming in the future. Yeah. So what can people expect?
00:11:10
Speaker
Well, just more genuine interactions. So for example, in this new video, I use a lot more like on-camera talking. um I talk directly to the camera and I also have like a lot more conversations with like my wife or for example, Thomas or Frederick who comes to help me with the exhaust. yeah you know It's a little bit more like genuine in that regard. And I use a lot more camera movement. So even when the still shots, I end up like moving the frame around. So it looks like it's a little bit like how handheld.
00:11:48
Speaker
I saw that. I was like, what was Kristen just, you know, having like a ah seizure holding the camera.
00:11:59
Speaker
It's like Henry holding the camera or something couldn't keep it still. Actually, that was Henry did carry hold the camera a couple of times. Oh, really? Yeah, he did a great job. I was so impressed with him. And like when when I played him the video, he's like, that's the bit I shot that Yeah, cool. Yeah, that's nice. So, yeah, so that's been the process of it. Like, and the funny thing is, like, I get these big feelings, and I feel like nearly half depressed.
00:12:29
Speaker
And, you know, I nearly sometimes want to cry. am i I'm just like, I don't know what to do with myself. I'm just, I kind of like, I just need to get on with the next part. yeah Like just keep on going. Otherwise I'll get bogged down in this like, I finished my project. I don't know what to do.
00:12:50
Speaker
ah Yep. You're like ron Ron Burgundy in the phone box after Baxter gets kicked into the river. a close case of emotion. Exactly. Yep. So yeah, awesome. That sounds exciting. I like it. Yeah, and I think it's gonna be really interesting to to do because I you know, it's it's a lot less stressful dude.
00:13:22
Speaker
It's like, yeah yeah, you're just a little bit less stressed around the production of the video and it just makes things a bit more enjoyable to edit too. So, you know, I'm hoping this is a really good thing for me and I'm hoping also for my audience who may have been certain, well, may have been kind of attached to you know, the the comedy side of of my videos so can just see through that and just be okay with me being authentic and real. And yeah, I mean, if not, I mean, I'm sorry, but I'm not pandering to the audience. im I need to make something that I i really want to make. and And I think that's the truth. Yeah, I mean, then you can actually focus on what you're building.
00:14:19
Speaker
And that's what I love, right? yeah right so i love I love the building process. That's what I'm all about. And when I'm joking all the time, you don't really get that feeling of me loving the process of building things.

Go-Kart Project with Justin's Son

00:14:35
Speaker
So the other great thing about having a project finished though is being able to use it. oh So this week too, I've had Henry. Yeah. look I saw a, I saw of like a story with him out with the drift sleeves on the fucking sick. That was so mad. And he was like, Oh dad, I'm scared. I don't, I don't want to like, I'm like, dude, you got the drift sleeves on. You're just going to spin around. It's going to be fine. And then five minutes later you fucking crack the code and it was just like,
00:15:08
Speaker
o
00:15:12
Speaker
Well, it wasn't even five minutes. It's like probably about, I don't know, four or five seconds. And then he was like doing fucking donuts.
00:15:23
Speaker
Love it. Yeah, so that was great. And I've also taken it down. I took it down to local school. and But unfortunately, I didn't know what was about to happen. So I took it down to school and I was like, I just want to you know give it a bit of a shake down because I've also changed the um headlights on the on the go-kart. So I didn't like the headlights. So I bought these other ones that are like square shaped and the blue lights a lot nicer, I think. So I think generally I'm a lot happier with the headlights and I decided I was going to take it down, give the car to shake down. Cause I've had to disassemble a bunch of stuff, especially the oil cooler. And ah pay off well, I mean, it's back on now. but
00:16:14
Speaker
But yeah, I had to disassemble the oil cooler to attach the headlights. And so i I wanted to get down to the school because it's a big open area, right? They've got this big ah ah asphalt area there. A quadrangle.
00:16:34
Speaker
Yeah, and I just want to drive it there to give ah give it a bit of a test, make sure things were working fine. So I drive it down slowly. I pass this dude, which I nose into cars.
00:16:46
Speaker
And so I let it rip and I fucking go mad sideways on this sick drift with the drift sleeves on. And then all of a sudden fucking smoke comes out everywhere. I was like, oh man, I've blown the fucking cylinder. Like I've blown the engine. What's happening? now Oh my God. So I stopped the thing. The thing's on like smoking like a mother trucker. You know, there's smoke everywhere. And I was like, oh no, I've blown the engine.
00:17:16
Speaker
And I was like, wait a second, the engine was still running. I had to turn it off. ah So I looked around and then turned out one of the oil lines that I'd, you know, had to undo. I didn't quite do it properly. And it was blew a seal and then sprayed oil on the hot exhaust. oh yeah And then that's what smoked out. So ah ah for for about I have a good 30 seconds. I was like, oh, I've destroyed my go-kart. So luckily it was just the oil line. ah Henry was down there as there with me, so I got him to like ah look after the go-kart. And I said, can you just wait here with your friend and look after the the go-kart whilst I run up back home and grab a spanner?
00:18:09
Speaker
yeah So I came back and there was a bunch of kids like surrounding the go-kart. I was like, back off, back up, back up, back up, and I need to get this fixed.
00:18:21
Speaker
So I got a fix, cleaned up the oil, and then, uh, let the, let Henry drive it in front of his, all these kids. I think it was like the coolest kid ever. Like his dad just said, yeah, just jump in, drive the go-kart. And then he went and did burnout some donuts in front of the kids. So yeah.
00:18:44
Speaker
yeah That has been one. advantage of having a finished product that actually works and drives pretty good. It's not like the Pallet-Go The Pallet-Go-Cut you couldn't take anyway. It was so freaking big. It was too scary. It was a little bit dodgy. It didn't steer properly. I mean, hold on. What do you expect? He made it out of pallets. Well, you could say the same thing about this project. It was made from a hand truck. like
00:19:16
Speaker
I mean, it's still pretty much a solid chassis though. That's the difference. Yeah. As opposed to you like putting some rebob through some pallets that you've screwed together.
00:19:30
Speaker
Yep. So those two videos I'm just sitting on at the moment. I don't think I'm going to release them until I've ah done the second video for the go-kart. So ah this there's a second video that I'm making and it's basically ah around like ah putting the drift sleeves on and what, is it fun to drive with the drift sleeves? Short answer, yes, it's very fun. And ah what's its top speed? So we're gonna go find a ah long straight where I can actually get it up to its top speed and see what it can actually do.
00:20:13
Speaker
And then ah the third thing is we're going to take it somewhere really special and drive it. So that I'm not in sure yet if that's possible. So I'm going to hopefully this week coming, scout out the place. um And then we'll probably talk about it next week if it happened or not.
00:20:37
Speaker
So that's been my week.

Brewing Projects and Yeast Challenges

00:20:40
Speaker
so you garine What's been happening? Well, um, there's been a lot happening. The boring stuff is just finalizing some artwork for like um my upcoming release. So got ah I've got a ah double IPA that's going to be commercially brewed called Cryo Jesus. And so I'm finalizing the artwork for that. That's going to be sold at the Vin Momnopole, the government liquor store here in Norway. So that has to be like a pretty strict
00:21:16
Speaker
um rules on labeling and all sorts of stuff. So I do kind of follow their those rules and get that all finished. um It's pretty awesome. It's got like a big frozen Jesus head, like on the on the label, um you know, with like icicles and shit ah hanging from it. And I think it's going to really stand out on the shelf, especially, you know, with the typical beer labels.
00:21:40
Speaker
ah here in Norway. So I'm excited to see that. Also gonna like back print some of the stuff. So it's like metallic. So it looks even more frozen than it actually does. So that's really gonna be kind of fun. But other than that, i I did another test brew this week. So I was I did a I did a Belgian double.
00:22:02
Speaker
So ah this is a continuation of my Nordic Belgian beer series. So the plan is that I've got to going to release a series of no Nordic Belgian style beers. And so there's going to be like this triple, which I've already kind of nailed down the recipe for. And that one's actually going to be produced up in the Arctic Circle, which is pretty fucking crazy.
00:22:32
Speaker
let's go Yeah, up in Lofoten. I mean, it talks to them now about that. And then and then I've got also, um yeah, double and they'll probably be a a size on and a blonde or something like that. So typical Belgian style beers. um The double like a double, if you don't know what a double is, and that's like a darker kind of beer somewhere between a brown ale and a stout.
00:23:02
Speaker
ah But it's like really malt forward, a lot of complex, like fruitiness, like figs and raisins and dates kind of going on in there as well. And but like kind of a little bit sweeter than the average Belgian beer. So it's kind of like kind of imagine like a Belgian style stout. That's kind of the easiest way to think about it. um Really, can they can be really, really nice, especially at this time of year in the autumn. This is like a perfect time for them. ah So the only the only issue is now is that I've been testing, I've brewed this wine recipe before, was pretty pleased with it, but decided to make some changes on it. And the biggest thing is actually yeast availability. So like typically like from my homebrew days, you can go
00:23:56
Speaker
You can get your hands on small amounts of really specialty yeasts with, ah you know, no problems at all. But this is, ah gets really problematic when you start scaling it up. Because I was like mixing multiple yeast cultures together and just like, oh, I'm going to like add WLP 500 and WLP 546 or whatever the heck it was and mix them all together. And that's going to make my super yeast.
00:24:24
Speaker
um And it's gonna make this beer the most amazing thing ever. But you can't... Just say i imagine a superhero. Marvel, new Marvel's movie, like Super Yeast. I mean, it's just those are things you can do when you're homebrewing, which is really, really fun. ah Because you never know what you're gonna get, which is kind of part of the gamble and the joy of of homebrewing.
00:24:53
Speaker
ah But when you start going to like big scale brewing, you can't take that risk. And then the other side of it is is that like most most places won't want to mix different yeast cultures together. That's a biological nightmare for cleaning and keeping things sanitized and all sorts of stuff. So it's a, it's a real challenging, um, kind of scenario sometimes with, uh, with converting homebrew beer
00:25:25
Speaker
over to commercial beer. So what I was doing with the double was basically brewing it in the same kind of way that you would if I was commercially brewing it. And so I decided to go with a yeast that's produced by a big commercial producer dry yeast because dry yeast is easiest to get a hold of. um And that was called T58 from Fermentus just to go into the nerdy geek side of things for people who are interested in that kind of stuff.
00:25:51
Speaker
And, um, yeah, it's fermenting. It's nearly finished. Fuck it. Like the one thing I like about Belgian beers, they ferment fucking fast. I mean, I brew this on Friday and it's pretty much hit FG like final gravity now. I'm like, this is Monday morning. So like it's literally had little bit over 48 hours, nearly three days. And it's just, it's done pretty much. So I let it sit on the yeast for a little bit and clean itself up.
00:26:22
Speaker
ah Some processes that happen after most of the fermentation is finished and So let that do that and we'll see how it turns out. So it's gonna be pretty cool I think um it'll be if it turns out like I mean, I've already tasted from the tank now and it's tasting pretty good I need some need some time for maturation as they call it, um just kind of round off the flavors a little bit. Some of the darker malt flavors can be a bit of a bit harsh and astringent and that rounds off over time. So that'll be, ah itll it'll be a really nice addition I think to the Nordic ah series of beers that I'm going to do. So the difference with this double and a typical double
00:27:11
Speaker
is that it's going to be a little bit sweeter than a typical double. So it'll be kind of more, I think the Norwegians like sweet things. So I think that's kind of, that's where I'm headed with it. um It's got but tons of like,
00:27:28
Speaker
Belgian candy sugar, which is kind of like a often made from dates and things like that, like a syrup made from dates. And then I put in Mascavo sugar and it's got some nice, like pretty mild noble hops in there as well. So, but like the me real star of the show is the malt, malt in this one. So I think it's going to be really nice.
00:27:52
Speaker
did i I wanted to like jump in there, but I was like, he's just telling all these details about his beer. But I was thinking about like where you had to adapt the recipe so that it can be commercially brewed. It made me think about like that Yahoo! Serious movie when it was Young Einstein.
00:28:11
Speaker
where it creates the atomic bomb to put bubbles into beer. Yeah, so I made me think about that. because Because I'm thinking like, you know, you can't trust these big commercial breweries, because they're going to turn your beer into an atomic bomb.
00:28:30
Speaker
oh It's all well and good to do it at home, you know, in your home brewer. But like, yeah, give them that recipe and then all of a sudden they've turned it into something deadly. There's those who don't know, a carbonating beer has nothing to do with nuclear fission.
00:28:49
Speaker
ah Carbon dioxide is produced naturally by the yeast as it ferments, as it eats up all the sugars in in the water, in the beer. So there you go.
00:29:01
Speaker
No nuclear fission required. No, who's serious? You lied to us. Yeah, clearly. It was such a good movie. It's probably a really bad movie, but I haven't seen it in probably like 30 years. I mean, there's like a whole thing where he like saved some kittens from being baked into a pie or something. It was super. It was so random. It was some super weird stuff. But of course, like, and he lived in Tasmania too, yeah. And then he rode the boat for mainland. Yeah, he rode the boat for the mainland.
00:29:32
Speaker
ah Oh, so good. And then I guess it was a kind of like a prequel to like, ah in some sense, it was kind of like Forrest Gump in the whole like thing where like, you know, he like invents surfing, if you remember, in obviously like, you know, it's all a joke. But yeah, and like, there's all sorts of like things that he invents along the way, like,
00:29:58
Speaker
And, you know, rock and roll or roll music. That's right.
00:30:06
Speaker
That reminds me of The Simpsons. Doesn't he say it the opposite way? He says like it's a roll and rock or something. I don't know. I can't remember. I just think of The Simpsons when Bart changes out those hymns in the church and they're all singing um In the Garden of Eden by Iron Butterfly.
00:30:28
Speaker
ah And then cigarette lighters go off in the air and ever and then there's the old lady on the organ the lily li lily li doing like the guitar solo on the organ. And then Reverend Lovejoy is like, hmm, this sounds like rock and or roll.
00:30:45
Speaker
ah da Sorry. though um Just so you know, Justin and I probably over consumed episodes of The Simpsons when we were young.
00:30:56
Speaker
probably due to the fact that our mother didn't want us watching it. And, uh, and as a result, we've got episodes of the Simpsons burned into our brains forever. Only the early ones though. Cause the new ones, I got no idea. No, of course. I mean, how many years has it been running to 30 years nearly? Yeah, it's crazy. Crazy. So yeah, anyway, back to the brutal double.

Commercial Brewing of Cosmic Christ Beer

00:31:21
Speaker
It's turning out pretty good so far. So time will tell. I'm excited to see.
00:31:26
Speaker
what the next iteration of the Nordic series will look like. um Yeah, so pretty fun. That's pretty much it for me. How's a Cosmic Christ going? What's going on with that? Oh yeah, that's what I did forget. That is brewing, that is being brewed commercially tomorrow. Oh baby, let's go. It is, yeah. I saw you also posted something about Gulathing.
00:31:55
Speaker
That was an unofficial thing. Still? Yeah. ah So, I mean, know there's a for those who don't live in Norway, there's a there's a basically a beer shop chain called Gulatting. They sell the what we call shop strength beers here in Norway, which you can't you can't buy anything stronger than 4.7 at a regular shop here in Norway.
00:32:21
Speaker
So Cosmic Christ is a 4.7 PS, so that will be sold through the shops like Gulatting. The talk to the guy, like I know the guy who runs the local Gulatting here in Drummond, and he's kind of he's keen to get it on on board. So basically I kind of posted a thing in our small my small supporters group um about yeah basically pre-ordering the beer. So so that basically he has enough in stock so that when people go in and buy it, it's not sold out. So that's the plan. um And yeah, so it's all happening. It's on tomorrow. I'll be I'll be joining the brew day in Lir at a place called Disco Brewing. And um they'll be producing the beer for me.
00:33:17
Speaker
And we'll see what happens. It's exciting times. So yeah, I'm going to follow up with a bunch of them. Then I got to go out and sell it all. Sell my soul. So sell your beer. Yeah. So that's that's going to be good fun.
00:33:35
Speaker
Awesome dude, exciting stuff. Yeah. And you got labels done and happy with them as well. Yeah. yeah Those, uh, the labels arrived in the posts late last week and, uh, just, it needs to be said. Mind blown.
00:34:03
Speaker
They were pretty epic. They turned out so good. The finish on them, I got the colors, the way it all printed up. So good. I still make some changes, I think. The way that I printed it was super expensive. I could achieve some of the similar effects without spending as much money.
00:34:31
Speaker
for the next time we'll make some changes. But for now, I think especially for an introductory label to the market, it looks so epic. Like I took a sample down to the Gulatting store ah the to give to Pave and the guy that runs that one. And we were talking about it and we just put it on the shelf.
00:34:54
Speaker
like amongst all the other IPAs and stuff that were there. And it was just like, it was the first thing you saw. yeah It was just, it stands out so, so much better than any other PA on the shelf. So really stuck to that. So I'm really excited to see how well it will sell as well. Cause I think, you know, that kind of cosmic Jesus, you know,
00:35:17
Speaker
uh, on the front is just so eye catching the way you got all these really to, for those who haven't seen it, it's, it's got like really bright kind of metallicy fluoro colors, like by this aura around the Jesus figure in a space suit. And then all these kind of like Aurora style, uh, things come in flying off him and stars and shit like that in the background. So it's quite eye catching and, uh, you know,
00:35:45
Speaker
The Jesus figure pierces into your soul as you look at it and... and I'm glad I could do that in that photo shoot. You asked me to put on... Yeah, so, yeah, there you go. that was that's That's my mind blown this week. Labels have arrived and it's all happening. So, I guess we've just gone into that. So, yeah ah my mind is being blown.
00:36:14
Speaker
by this guy called Maxwell Hazam. Hazam. Hazam. Okay. ah Maxwell Motorworks is so what he's called on Instagram. He produces like two motorcycles a year. Okay. And they're gorgeous. They're absolutely stunning pieces of art.
00:36:41
Speaker
You know, it's not like over the top, you know, too much detail. Sometimes like some of these motorbikes I like look like 1920s style, yeah really simple, polished everything, just absolutely gorgeous. And it made me really inspired by this guy because like you can make a living making two motorcycles a year.
00:37:06
Speaker
And I- Can you? ah Well, he must, cause he is like, he makes two motorcycles a year, right? And those motorcycles, I guarantee you he's selling for like a million plus. Really? Think of that much.
00:37:22
Speaker
Yeah, dude, like some of them are just absolutely stunning like and they're completely unique. They're like a ah motorbike collector's like dream to have one of those bikes in their garage, right? Right. So i I feel like that's inspiring for me to see that like people can make a living doing something they really love.
00:37:44
Speaker
and somehow make money from it. Now, the guy probably had a hard road getting to where he is now, but the new bike he's working on has a Ferrari V8 engine and he basically just liked the look of the engine and then built the bike around the Ferrari engine. How do you fit a fucking V8 engine in a motorbike? Well, you don't. but You fit a fit a motorbike around the V8 engine.
00:38:14
Speaker
I'm imagining this thing must be huge. It's big, but it's not that big because it's, it's yeah, I think he chose the right engine for this. Right. And you know, it's so basically builds the bike around the engine, inspired by the engine and then just continues to build from there. And it's, it's absolutely gorgeous. like Yeah, so I'm super inspired and I'm blown away by his work. It's just, and yeah, it's so good. I look forward to the day you can sell a hand, like a go-kart made from a hand truck for a million.
00:38:54
Speaker
Well, okay. The kids at testing at the, you know, at the local motor club, you know, they were going to, they wanted to buy one. All right, Karen, don't, that'd be a like contradicting, like condescending, you know, are they going to pay a million for it? No, I mean, you're going to start somewhere, Karen. Come on. All right. All right. So next, I mean, I can, I could get,
00:39:20
Speaker
Like for a 3D printed WSE rally car, I could get that. I could see that, a million. Really? Let's go, Garen. I'm not like, if you fucking commit and just go like full detail, go full retard into it, and then just like...
00:39:38
Speaker
You know, I'm all about full retard. um Just to, just to, we clarify for the listeners, we are quoting Tropic Thunder when referred to our full retard. So look up ah Tropic Thunder and full of retard on YouTube and you'll see what I'm talking about. okay ah Well, I mean, some, I'm trying to find a segue and I find it.
00:40:09
Speaker
Maybe that's what's yanking your chain. Horrible segues. Not this week. I'll tell you what's yanking my chain this week. Energy drinks and kids. I'll tell you what. Like the other day, right, I was at the supermarket. There was this like, it couldn't be more than 19 years old. And like, he's clearly been training, like out training, doing like weights or something.
00:40:35
Speaker
got like the, you know, the muscle shirt on and all rest. And I'm like, he goes up to the checkout and I see what he puts on the conveyor belt. He puts a protein shake, a protein bar, and then fucking 10 monsters.
00:40:53
Speaker
And I was just like, what, like 10 monster in the jinx? Who, what the fuck? I'm like, you just, are you clearly been working out and trying to eat healthy and, you know, trying to like, yeah and then you're just like pumping your body full of that shit? Seriously, what the heck? Like, and I see the way the kids drink this stuff. I'm like, like, I mean, caffeine is one thing, like, cause I mean, we all drink coffee these days, but like,
00:41:24
Speaker
I mean, why is there not more restrictions? Like it's caffeine plus all this other bullshit in there. Like it's not even remotely healthy. I agree, Karen. This sounds like a new market. You should open up the, like, uh, like the original energy drink. Yeah. It's called coffee. The original energy drink. And it's like should be black and fucking bitter. ah So if you don't like it,
00:41:51
Speaker
you know, grow some hair on your nuts. You can fuck off and go home, you fucking pussy.
00:41:59
Speaker
yeah I mean, yeah you could drink your girly monsters. I mean, what the big reality is, is that like, I mean, if like, when you start drinking coffee, like no one like starts drinking coffee and goes, wow, this is amazing.
00:42:18
Speaker
like guess that's all like a If you're drinking it early, when you're like you know in your early teens or something, like you're putting a butt ton of sugar in it. yeah Try and do it. That's exactly what the Monsters and Red Bull and all those energy drinks are doing. It's basically candifying like coffee, yeah it's the same, right? it And it gets you hooked. Cause like, i'm I'm up to three cups a day, man. I never used to be like that. is like but but Maybe I would have a a cup of tea. yeah And then now I'm like, fuck, I haven't had a coffee in about 30 minutes. Gonna have me another one. Like the issue though is like, okay, if if you're having sugar in your coffee, like maybe not the healthiest thing you can do, right?
00:43:05
Speaker
But if you're not, like most of us, like grown adults drink black coffee, you know, or black coffee with a bit of milk or something in it, right? You just killed everyone that was listening and put sugar in their coffee. Everyone's like, fuck you, Kirik. I'm a grown at adult.
00:43:26
Speaker
I'm guessing, you know, it's just one of those things that I mean, I don't know, maybe the culture here in Norway is different. ah But yeah, it's like, I don't sugar and then caffeine, especially kids. Come on. Like, and it's like seen as cool, you know? Like I'm just going to sit and drink Monster all day instead of like something that's like actually going to hydrate me and what I need to, you know, function. It's all just marketing, really.
00:43:57
Speaker
I mean, where where are the the parents, right? Cause like, yeah, parents, not no restricting, you know, use of phones and and ah video games and stuff, right? And it's the same with this stuff, right? You know, you ask any teenager to show them how many hours they've used on the phone. I reckon it's on average 10 to 12 hours. It's insane. Dude, it's insane. But it's the same for these like energy drinks, right?
00:44:26
Speaker
like they just don't understand where the but where the line is because they get hooked yeah by the caffeine because it's an addictive substance, right? But it's it's like it's become like the new smoking for like young kids here. Like they like get ah an older, like in Norway you got like a, is it 16 or something you have to be to buy an energy drink?
00:44:47
Speaker
I think so yeah so like they go and get like an older 16 year old kid to go buy the monster and Red Bull and shit like like it's like alcohol I'm like it's like a nanny state here in Norway isn't it it so fucking lame I'm like but I mean it's like ah you know like hanging like kids hanging out the side outside the like supermarket and be like hey man can you buy me some monster you're like Like, on the down low. At our age, dude, we were like, I'm begging strangers to buy us a case of beer. Yeah, like, come on, man. Buy us, like, a couple of one nicks, please. Yeah, buy us, like, here, we'll give you 30 bucks, or buy us a case of beer, please. And the guy's like, yeah, right. There they are these days, like, can you buy me one can of Monster, please?
00:45:32
Speaker
I mean, like, obviously we don't, I don't condone underage drinking, but I mean, it it's a bit of passage, Karen, like you have to do it. I have under no illusion that my kids will drink before 18.
00:45:48
Speaker
Like, that's just how it has to be. It's a weird thing, but, you know, as long as say hope I hopefully taught them right and, you know, they've got a good head on their shoulders, they'll do it because their peers do it and hopefully they'll learn from it. That's not a great thing to do all the time. No, exactly. Let's be honest though, like, I mean, I brew beer for Christ's sake. okay it's the It's a pot calling the kettle black. That being said, that being said, I mean, i and know we I got some hop vines growing in the garden. Yeah. Yeah. And Mackenzie, my oldest son, he's four years old, ah we've decided we're going to brew something together with the hops that ah grow on the on the vine. So he loves Votarl, which is in like, ah like, a what do you even call that in English?
00:46:45
Speaker
I don't even know. It's like, it's war, like, so it's unfermented beer, basically. So it's all a sweet, sugary, like, maltose sugar that you get from malt and they basically just, yeah, drink that instead.
00:47:01
Speaker
So it doesn't have any yeast, so it's not no alcohol produced in it. So Mackenzie loves that. Loves a bit of water. It's like his favorite thing, like on a Friday or Saturday as a can of water. And ah and so i've he knows that I brew beer.
00:47:18
Speaker
So I said to him that, you know, these flowers, like because the flowers, the hops, they're pretty useless to for what I brew, typically. And they're so inconsistent that I just wouldn't kind of bother with doing it myself. But I thought but it is a fun project to grow them in the backyard.
00:47:39
Speaker
And they're in flour now, so it's only a couple more weeks before they're ready. And then I'm just going to pick all the flours and we're going to brew some, brew some water at home and pasteurize it. Well, as best we can. And you know, so we have homemade water for Mackenzie. So I'm hoping that he'll really like that.
00:47:59
Speaker
Awesome. That'll be fun. So, yep. But just what's yanking your chain this week? Thumbnails. Thumbnails. Yeah, it's a necessary evil of being like a content creator, a YouTuber, right? ah But I hate that there's so much pressure on this.
00:48:20
Speaker
you know, like, because that's what basically sells your video. If you don't have a good thumbnail, you can have the best video in the fricking world, ah but no one will click on it. yeah You can have the worst video on the world, but you have a really good thumbnail, everyone will click on it, and then you'll get at least some cash from AdSense or something, you know, even though people just clicked off within like five seconds because they realized it was the worst video ever. But, you know, I hate that it's like this. I hate that it's like you're pandering to an algorithm all the time. And I think that's been like a lot of the change that I've been thinking about in the last couple of months with my content is like I'm sick of pandering to algorithm. You know, a lot of these groups that I'm in with people talking about
00:49:11
Speaker
ah content creating that their content creators themselves, a lot of them are trying to hack this algorithm and I'm like, why can't we just be ourselves? right i like I'm sick of this. like Whether I liked it or not, I was trying to do that.
00:49:27
Speaker
in my previous videos, right? I was constantly thinking about title thumbnail, how it should work, how I should present myself, how to put in a hook in the beginning, like all this stuff, constantly adding hooks through the video. And I'm like, I'm done.
00:49:44
Speaker
And it pissed me off that thumbnails are so freaking important. Uh, mainly because I probably could never make a good one.
00:49:56
Speaker
got ai and shit now You can just fucking. Yeah, but people see that it's an AI generator. I see all the time people that make like AI generated thumbnails and they just, they're not good. You're like, you can kind of tell, right? There's these small things. I mean something about the hand in someone's forehead or whatever. No, it's not that. A lot of the time it's to do with the like the lighting or things like that or the the way the camera, you know, like, yeah, the the picture was kind of built. I don't know how to explain it. Like I've seen thumbnails. I'm like, oh, come on, that looks so AI. Even the photo realistic ones, right?
00:50:38
Speaker
It's so crazy. Like on YouTube, like term on Instagram, I'm like, I started seeing all these AI, like profiles, you know, especially like you know female models and stuff. And it's just like, I'm like, it's so crazy. I'm like, I mean, obviously, like I look at him and go, yeah, that's AI. But like, sometimes you're just like, is it?
00:51:02
Speaker
You know, and you're just like, do does a woman actually look at it like that in real life?
00:51:09
Speaker
you go you Halfway you got your dick out. I wouldn't go that far. Jesus. Just a little eye candy, you know, but it's just like like, it is crazy.
00:51:26
Speaker
It is crazy that what you can do. So basically, Justin, you just need to like get like some AI hot chick, like AI'd into your like pallet, into your go-kart or whatever. Like if... Don't even start. That's not, that's something that really yanks my chain. Oh my God. Stop using your sexuality to get fucking views, women. I'm sorry. Like it piss me off. Cause I can't, I, okay. I can't use that.
00:51:53
Speaker
they they' They're like, what do you call it? Have you tried taking your shirt off, Justin? They're mind hacking, they're mind hacking the male mindset, right? There's this girl, I don't know what she's called, but basically she just wears tight pants in like, and she like sticks her butt out when she's cutting wood and shit. And it's like, it tells her the camera angles every time are irrelevant to what she's doing. The only aspect is to get the best angle on her ass.
00:52:25
Speaker
and That's exactly the same for the thumbnails. It's just her ass. And she gets millions of views. Yeah, of course. Click through. Oh, it just drives me insane. Well, the fact of the matter is you've seen it. You've clicked on a few yourself. Exactly, right? It pissed me off that they use the use against us. And the problem is I would love to say I could use the do the opposite tactics, right? I use like, ah like a tactic, you know, to get, you know, women to click on, but women don't watch YouTube. So no, well, I didn't definitely not watching YouTube videos about like go kart making.
00:53:07
Speaker
What?! Are you kidding me,

YouTube Thumbnails and Authenticity Struggles

00:53:10
Speaker
right? Just like, just to have you with your shirt off holding an axe or something next to the go-kart. That'll do it. No, that's a problem, Kieran. That won't do it for women. That'll do it for gay guys and them and my YouTube feeder, but there's nothing wrong with that. It's money in the bank. Yeah, but you know what guys are like. They're just objectifying me.
00:53:35
Speaker
Like at least if you were attracting a woman audience, they wouldn't be like objectifying you as much. They would be like, oh, he looks like a decent kind man, you know, that could hold me tight at night. I bet he would be a great father to my children.
00:53:51
Speaker
Yeah, right. the The gay guys are like, oh, I like some of that. Well, I mean, I'm all like, you've seen my videos. I'm half naked in half of them. So I mean, I'm surprised you haven't had like a full on, you know, following from the, from the gay community.
00:54:14
Speaker
To be honest, yeah. 100%. I don't understand why. I i just probably need to do a thumbnail with the Mankini man. Yeah, Mankini man and a bunch of tools. Just holding some big tools.
00:54:29
Speaker
Yep. So yeah, I mean, I kind of agree with you, though. I mean, like, I'm serious, like, and like, most women, not all, some are completely naive, but most women know exactly what they're doing when they make these kind of, you know, they're selling their sexuality to us men generally. And, you know, it's like, fucking hell, just just be yourself.
00:54:55
Speaker
Just being like a regular normal person. Come on. This is why I like people like Laura Kumpf and Simone Gertz, right? They're women, but they're focusing on what they're actually doing. Right. Right. They don't use any sort of sexual you know, attraction from their male audience to get clicks. Like they're just like, hey, this is what I'm doing. Yeah, but there's also a segment of that audience that are just like, oh, yeah, women in the workshop. Oh, just my dream woman can just I can be in the in the workshop together with him. We'll make stuff.
00:55:33
Speaker
You know, 100 percent. That's exactly exactly what's out going on in the mindset. But one thing I would say, though, is great about people like Laura conference among girls is they have they're also empowering other women. Yeah, that's great. To not be that those type of women where they're wearing tight shorts and fucking shaking their ass in front of the camera to get clicks. Right. So, you know, I I wish there were more women out there that just did that sort of stuff, could just be real. Cause I'm sick of it. I just, yeah. So that was also yanking my chain, apparently. Thanks for bringing that up. No worries. Glad I could help get that off your chest. So yep. You got any recommendations for this week, Joss?
00:56:26
Speaker
Uh, yeah, I got one because, uh, so, uh, I am quite good friends with Pierre, the Swedish maker. Pierre is a big fan of beer, actually.
00:56:38
Speaker
Yeah. hes um they He also has a podcast with another guy called Stephen Bell from Stephen Bell Creates. And it's a fun, easy listening podcast, kind of a little bit like this, because to be honest, this podcast is a little bit inspired by those guys. We just ripped you off.
00:57:07
Speaker
ah Now, more just the fact that you know that they... ah They're just more genuine and real talk. right so And that's what i I found good listening to. It's like it's real talk. It's it's how things are really going, what's been happening, the family, all that other stuff is also included in you know what they're doing in the garage or in the in the workshop. right yeah So i you know I was inspired by that. And you know we I went to like a Swedish, I went to Sweden.
00:57:41
Speaker
have for for like a meetup for that podcast and and you know, met all the people that were listeners. And I just was super inspired by those guys and the community they've created. And I thought, you know what?
00:57:57
Speaker
We can also create a community here, you know, just in our own way, you and me, and what we're doing. And I think, um you know, if we can have half of what they've got going on, I think we've been successful in doing this podcast. yeah So why should why should people check out their podcast over our one?
00:58:15
Speaker
Because it's called the Three Northern Makers Podcast. And there's only two of them. Yeah, I've noticed this. Every time it's just like, just the two of them. And where's the third one? Is it like a ghost maker?
00:58:29
Speaker
na No, no, no, they started the podcast with three of them. I think there's the guy who was called Andy, I think I can't even remember because I keep on mentioning him's name, but I don't listen to those early episodes. I haven't listened to him. So, um but yeah, he kind of like dropped off the radar.
00:58:49
Speaker
he No, I mean, Andy had his own things going on and he couldn't, he felt like the podcast wasn't for him. And so he stopped doing it basically. um you know And so they were kind of like balls deep. They just had to keep on going. They were like, well, we called it the Three Northern Makers podcast. So I guess we've just got to keep on going. Maybe you can join the podcast, Josh. You can be the third member. i No one wants that. Why not?
00:59:22
Speaker
No, yeah I don't think Pierre would like that. Neither I think Steve or Steve was like, oh God, or is this guy rapping on about the game? Doesn't he have his own podcast? He's fucking telling us the same shit in it. I was like, double up content. Yep. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So i I want everyone who doesn't know who through Northern Maker's podcast is to go check that out. um a really, really nice of them because they shouted. The reason why I want that is because they shouted us out in their podcast. Pierre dropped us in the in the shit because we haven't kind of haven't publicly released this podcast. We kind of just put it on Spotify and I was waiting till we had like maybe five episodes.
01:00:08
Speaker
before I kind of publicly say like, Hey, we've got a podcast. Um, that way you and I kind of like have determined that this is a thing. Right now it has to be a thing. Thanks.
01:00:21
Speaker
you jackfi I said to me when I was talking about it, he's like, yeah, I kind of like drop mentioned you on your podcast on the, on the podcast, on my podcast. And I was like, I didn't know if you wanted that, but I guess like, since Karen bought a microphone, you guys are kind of serious about this. So yeah. I'm serious about my narcissism. That's what I'm serious about.
01:00:52
Speaker
So I just oh I should just give a shout out to Pierre and Mo Steve because they have both asked for more beer. I'm working on it. I'm working on it. There will be some more. um I'm doing a lot of testing at the moment. So there is some stuff I can send you. So I'm going to send you guys a message and ask for addresses and stuff soon. So, yep.
01:01:18
Speaker
Yeah, they they were just mentioning on the podcast that that that they want all your beer. All of it. Yeah, just send all of it. They'll they'll taste it for free. Of course, like fucking hell, Jesus. Like, give me free beer. Yeah, well, I mean, because like, obviously like Steve's in, is he in Wales? Is that where he is? Yeah, so I'm going to send them to Wales and I'm going to send them to Sweden. So thanks for doubling up my postage. Jesus.
01:01:49
Speaker
Can't just drive it over to Pierre. It wouldn't be that that then you could deliver a keg in any requests other than Holy Ghost because yeah, but I can I can brew that again, actually. So I need to test it because I've got some new new ingredients to test on that one. So Yeah, I mean, it's good, but I do have to send beer to Wales anyway, because I will be sending some beer to a beer reviewer in Wales. A guy ah called goes under the channel name of Real El Craft Beer. And yeah, he's a guy in Wales, um I think, I think it's Wales. Yeah. And he reviews a lot of beer. He's actually reviewed some of my beer before.
01:02:42
Speaker
I sent him like in back in my homebrew days yeah with the raving reviews. yeah Well, actually pretty fucking good. I sent him an Imperial Stout. It was like 17%. So he was like, fuck, I gotta try this. And he gave it a nine out of 10.
01:03:01
Speaker
Like I'm pretty fucking stoked considering like it's a homebrew. Like that's awesome. So can't wait to send him some proper commercially brewed stuff. Like he loves IPAs and it also loves chili. So the hot on the list is the ghost chili IPA.
01:03:18
Speaker
Holy Ghost to send him. That will be awesome. I'd love to get it back on that. I'm so looking forward to producing that, Kieran, because that is my number one favorite beer you've ever produced. And apparently, Pierre as well. He fucking loved it.
01:03:34
Speaker
Good, everybody who's tried it loves it. It is the best beer you've ever created. Well, that being said, there's there's a bunch of other good stuff in the works. So, you know, hold on to your hats. Hold on to your hats.
01:03:50
Speaker
oh Yep. So there we go. I will be sending beers, guys. Just hold on to your hats. Good. Do you have anything people should check out?

Home Brewing Insights from Treehouse Brewing

01:04:02
Speaker
I do.
01:04:03
Speaker
I do, I do, I do. um Treehouse Brewing, American brewery, legendary IPA producer. They have a YouTube youtube channel.
01:04:15
Speaker
ah and the guy Nate, I can't remember his name, the main head brewer there, he hosts like this a lot of videos and he does like a lot of like homebrew orientated stuff. So if people like get into homebrewing and they want to like expand some of their knowledge but in know like a really casual way and get some insight from some of the best like one of the best beer brewers in the world, I would say, for especially for IPAs. like Check this guy out. Check out the Treehouse sp Brewing on on YouTube.
01:04:53
Speaker
So there's some really interesting fun stuff. feel Like there's a lot of comparisons of different styles of beer and things like that. It's kind of fun to see, but also like a lot of home brewing ah inside as well. So yeah, kind of fun. I mean, it's geeky for me, but like, I'm sure there's someone out there would like that kind of stuff.
01:05:17
Speaker
Well, I'll put links to both of them, ah both Three Northern Makers podcast and ah Treehouse Brewing. Is that right? That's the one. Yeah. so and yeah Awesome.

Closing Remarks and Sign-Off
