Podcast Introduction and Six-Month Milestone
00:00:01
Speaker
This is the Garage Avenger podcast.
00:00:12
Speaker
I like how we are both air drumming it just simultaneously.
00:00:18
Speaker
Well, it's week 26. We've done six months of this shit. Can realize? Six months? Yeah. Wow, that's crazy. I know, right? I can't believe we're still going on this. I can't believe people still
Justin and Kieran's Ambitions
00:00:33
Speaker
ah Well, hello and welcome to the Garage Edge podcast. We are six months into this podcast, weirdly. I'm Justin, trying to share the joy of building my death machines in my garage in the hope of one day making a living out of doing so.
00:00:48
Speaker
And I am Kieran, the twin brother of Justin, who is trying to turn my garage brewed beers into a world-renowned brewery. Yes, we are twin brothers with a passion for creating the wild and unexpected, taking you on an everyday ride through what's happening in our garages.
00:01:08
Speaker
Welcome, everybody. Welcome.
Navigating Special Occasions and Gift-Giving
00:01:11
Speaker
Who's starting this week, Kieran?
00:01:15
Speaker
yeah Well, you can start it this week. What's been happening?
00:01:21
Speaker
ah It's Kristen's birthday week. yeah yeah ah ah for that You're going to have to explain why we're both laughing and smiling as we say this.
00:01:33
Speaker
So my lovely wife, she loves her birthday. And yeah, it's good to love your birthday, but it kind of like, there's like a build up to it.
00:01:46
Speaker
And there's ah it just takes the whole week. Like you just can't have one day with her. It's like, it's spread out. Now, admittedly, it wasn't that bad this year, but in previous years, i just feel like, oh, come on.
00:02:01
Speaker
It's just a birthday. She's going to listen to this podcast, you know. Yeah, she knows how I feel about this. ah Yeah. And so what what does this what is what is the last week entailed?
00:02:16
Speaker
the bill well Well, to be honest, a lot of it's to do with like preparation. So you know it's a it's a triple whammy in my opinion. Right. Because you have Mother's Day the weekend before. Yeah.
00:02:32
Speaker
Bam. And then you have Valentine's Day and Kristen's birthday on the same day. ba Bam, bam. Bam.
00:02:40
Speaker
I can't get away with just giving one present. You poor motherfucker. You should have just like negotiated that one from day dot when you met her. You like, when's your birthday?
00:02:52
Speaker
14th of February? No, sorry. 27th. It's so true. You're just changing your birthday. Sorry. So, yeah, ah I was required to go to the shops to buy a Mother's Day present.
00:03:08
Speaker
Yeah. And help the kids also get a Mother's Day present sorted out. Come on, they should be. They're old enough. They should be on the game. They should be, like, using their own pocket money and crap.
00:03:21
Speaker
Well, they are. They are using their own money, which is really good. um But, you know, Henry, he's still at the stage where he doesn't give a fuck about giving other people gifts. He just wants gifts for himself.
00:03:36
Speaker
So taking him to the shops, you're going like... Do you think mum will like a Pokemon? Well, maybe mum will like FIFA. No, it's not even that. He'll be like, we got mum a card.
00:03:48
Speaker
Now where's the stuff that I want to buy?
00:03:52
Speaker
Poor mum. Yeah. so yeah, it's kind of like that busy week where it was sort of everything's happening. I was just how you just feel like, oh, come on, you know.
00:04:05
Speaker
um And, of course, because there's such big expectations from Kristen, I always feel like I have to deliver on the present as well. Yeah. Yeah.
00:04:16
Speaker
So she comes with these crazy ideas about presents. Like I never ask for anything crazy. Not really. e and but And when I do ask for something a little bit like outside of her wheelhouse, she's like, oh, i don't know how to get, where do I buy that? Oh, yeah. I'm like, it's called Google, bitch. Come on.
00:04:38
Speaker
I was about to say, well, I mean, like most of the crap that like when it's my birthday, I'm like, I said, Lynn was like, what do you want? like, Anything that's really, like, everything I really want is really expensive. No one can afford anyway. So, like, just let's just do something nice.
00:04:53
Speaker
Yeah, I want practical stuff. That's what want. Well, that's me too. And Lynn's like, you can't get a practical gift. I'm like, why not? I need a new pair of, like, I need a new hydrometer.
00:05:06
Speaker
like Yeah. Yeah, Kristen's like, oh, no, you have to put it on your business. I'm like, yeah, but no, that I don't care. This is not just a business for me. Like if you buy me this tool, it makes my life easier, which is a gift.
00:05:21
Speaker
Exactly. So don't worry about the taxes and all that stuff. well Just buy it for me because I want it. Yeah, it's gift. Come on. Don't look like gift horse in the mouth.
00:05:34
Speaker
So, the talk about gifts.
Home Integration and Family Contributions
00:05:37
Speaker
I had to sort gift for Kristen this week. Yeah. And she has been dreaming about a new sofa for a long time. And I've been like, no, we are not getting a new sofa. What's wrong with the one we have?
00:05:51
Speaker
You know, it doesn't have holes. Technically, it does have holes in it. but You can't see the holes. Yeah, just cover them up with pillows. It's all good. Yeah. And... it Like the way I see it too is the kids are still young, you know. henry Henry's turning 10 this year. Emma's turning 12.
00:06:10
Speaker
They're still going to be eating on the sofa and fucking it up. so They will until they're, well, 35. thirty five so what Yeah. Anyway, yep. like you So I kind of refused, I refused, refused. But then Kristen came up with a good idea.
00:06:27
Speaker
Oh, okay. And I felt like, oh, maybe maybe we should – Help her in this this dream of hers. So she's like, hey, guess what?
00:06:37
Speaker
i was at IKEA the other day and I found out that I really like the sofa that your sofa beer fridge is part of, like the modules. so Right, yeah. So she's saying, well, you should buy the sofa beer fridge back.
00:06:56
Speaker
Mm-hmm. And then we should have the sofa beer fridge installed in our house as part of the big sofa. So we have a chaise, which is the sofa beer fridge, and we have the rest of the sofa. Mm-hmm.
00:07:11
Speaker
And she's like, that'll save us money. I'm like, not really, because i have to buy back this type of beer fridge. And the guy that I built it for wants his money back, basically, that I spent on it.
00:07:24
Speaker
Yeah. so That he spent on it, sorry. So that's 10 grand. Yeah, cheap sofa. Yeah. But saying that.
00:07:36
Speaker
yeah The guy that bought it thought 10 grand was an expensive sofa beverage. He couldn't believe it. He was like, you spent so much money on it. Why do i have to pay so much money? You got one of a kind in the world. There's no other sofa like it. And you're complaining it costs 10,000 kroners.
00:07:53
Speaker
like Cry me a river, man. Seriously. So, yeah. ah So I went with that idea. Yeah, right. All right. Cool.
00:08:04
Speaker
I was like, sweet. That gets my sofa beer fridge back in the house, which is awesome. ah And then... Just in time for the kids to break it. Yeah, well, that's true. You can imagine all ah all the kids coming home and all the friends coming over.
00:08:20
Speaker
Sofa beer me. you and then they're all gonna be like all the kids are just gonna be going bananas about it playing with it like they did at the at the make of scarpa festival and it was just gonna be fucking chaos you could be like going through like 10 000 liters of bruce a year no i don't think so i'll have it switched off and i'll use it on special occasions i i imagine the compressor whilst watching tv is gonna be fun It's not that noisy. Oh, okay.
00:08:50
Speaker
Yeah, anyway, so back to, yep. So, yeah, she decided she wanted the same sofa. So, obviously, I didn't have that sort of cash lying around the price. right.
00:09:02
Speaker
so i decided i was gonna get together all our friends and family and just anything that anyone could contribute would help with the sofa aka me yeah and thank you thank you kieran and lynn for contributing to the sofa um you know we we managed to get a little bit of money together which helps a lot with the amount that it actually costs so you know uh quarters um which is Kristen's father, put a big chunk of money in, which I didn't expect.
00:09:31
Speaker
So that helps even more. So, you know, um we're getting a new sofa. Long story short. Yeah. Sweet. um Snowmobile update. Yeah.
00:09:45
Speaker
Tell me. Still parts are waiting to be shipped. Oh, really? What's been so It's been stuck in QC, in quality control, for years.
00:09:57
Speaker
A week now, I think. and Someone got the the Asian flu. No, it's Chinese New Year or something, I think. Oh, that old chestnut. Yeah.
00:10:09
Speaker
Yeah, so they got heaps of holidays around this time. Drop tools and see you later. Yeah, yeah. So, yeah, that's basically, and that's fucking up everything. so Yeah, because like the snow's, I mean, it's actually pretty cold at moment, but like snow's going to,
00:10:24
Speaker
this Snow's not going to last. No, and I just i need to get it so I can just drive it and be done with the project. Yeah. ah Okay. So still waiting for that. what's How's the rally car going?
Rally Car Project and 3D Printing Success
00:10:41
Speaker
Yeah. so this week I was, because of Kristen's birthday week, I was like, I'm unsure if I can even get time because this weird it stuff, it's like, – so Trying to organize a joint birthday present is kind of tough. You've got to send a bunch of messages to people.
00:11:01
Speaker
You've got to organize stuff. you got to that It actually takes a lot more time than you think. So I thought, oh, shit. I you i've like i think on Monday or Tuesday, like i'd use a couple of hours just sorting out that.
00:11:16
Speaker
I'm burning all my time up because you know Thursday and Friday kind of out for for me working. So I basically had to just push to to get as much done on Tuesday and Wednesday.
00:11:31
Speaker
And so my goal was to get the steering done.
00:11:37
Speaker
And so because I've extended the chassis so much, I'm lying down. And, you know, i have a habit of overcomplicating things, as everyone seems to know.
00:11:51
Speaker
And i overthink a lot on how something's going to work. Yeah. And I just felt so, what's the word?
00:12:05
Speaker
daunted by starting. Yeah. Like I couldn't execute. i kind of knew what I had to do, but I was like, what if I make a wrong decision here? Like, and I cut a pipe that I can't rejoin, you know? Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:12:19
Speaker
So I struggled for a while. for a while um and I just decided, like right, okay, now now i just have to cut. So I just started cutting the, what do we call it, steering, ah i don't even know the word for it.
00:12:38
Speaker
I've lost the word. ah The steering shaft. Let's just call it that. Steering column? Steering column, yeah, that's it I speak English. Yeah.
00:12:51
Speaker
So I cut the steering column shorter so that I could ah put the universal join in there. And, you know, I was thinking this is so complicated. I've got to get all the angles right and all this sort of stuff.
00:13:10
Speaker
It came out so good. and it was pretty easy. like i was thinking i would need to support it on both sides of the universal joint. It seems to be good just to be supported on one side.
00:13:22
Speaker
yeah nice. And yeah, so I installed the universal joint, which I required to make a 3D print because it had this oblong kind of edge.
00:13:35
Speaker
yeah kind of socket end to it that was obviously designed for some sort of steering end. And then, so I had 3D printed to fill up the gap basically and then use the set screws to like fix it in position.
00:13:53
Speaker
So the 3D printer comes in again and saves the day. and then Bamboo! Pritchard to save
00:14:05
Speaker
day! then I needed also like a collar to hold the steering column um because I've had to extend it a lot. So it comes sort of up from where it used to sit and then extends out towards my body, which is kind of lying down now in the seat.
00:14:25
Speaker
he And I 3D printed this part i was like, oh, this is not going to be strong enough. So I just increased the infill and the the wall thickness.
00:14:38
Speaker
The thing is solid as a rock. There's no way that's going to be breaking anytime soon. Sweet. So 3D printing, fucking awesome.
Learning Welding Techniques
00:14:50
Speaker
Dude, it's so good. yeah and Once I'd done that, i was like, oh, now I just have to add some brackets and put some supports under here. Bing, bang, boom, weld, weld, weld.
00:15:02
Speaker
you I was appalled at my welding at some point. that who is it? What's new? Actually, i learned something new too as well this week.
00:15:13
Speaker
I learned that welding down, as in with the fall of gravity, right is taboo. You're not supposed to do that.
00:15:27
Speaker
like like you say he's like like, you actually No, just you're like well no i mean i actually know I mean, I actually thought, well, like it makes sense to go down Like, you know, with the fall.
00:15:41
Speaker
Yeah. that I mean, actually, if you say it it kind of makes sense. Because look at the way, like, good beading is on on good welds, and it kind of makes sense that that they're moving up.
00:15:56
Speaker
Yeah, because what basically I got told by my friend Frederick this week is that when you weld down, it's like the weld gravity, just the weld kind of rolls down, guess you have to say. Yeah, exactly, right? So when you get those nice beaded, like perfect, beautiful, sexy welds, they're like, you know, I can see how it's like kind of like,
00:16:23
Speaker
They just kind of rolled the what you call it, ah do you call it a welding wand do what do you call it? An arc? No. Torch. Torch, yeah. Up the, yeah.
00:16:34
Speaker
I can see that. But it's very hard to do. Yeah, I imagine. Yeah, because it's like you have to move it in the right way, otherwise it just clumps a big yeah a bit bulge of weld. Yeah, that's why all the best welds are done by fucking robots. Yeah.
00:16:50
Speaker
Yeah, but I honestly, I learn a lot from talking with Frederick. So I should just make it clear why it's not like it's taboo to to weld down. is Apparently, it's because it doesn't bond the two metals properly because it's running down the down down the side of the metal. So you're you know like binding the metals together properly. Yeah.
00:17:16
Speaker
So structurally, it's weaker. There you go. But do I give a shit? No. Well, until you roll this fucking thing and it just...
00:17:28
Speaker
They look prettier than my welds that tried to go up, you know, so fair enough. But, yeah, I mean... Well, why didn't Frederick let you in on this earlier?
00:17:39
Speaker
i know. What a D-bag. Yeah. yeah This is just like, hey, look at my welds, roicism you know. What do you call those welds? yeah I'll just fucking do drag him on for a couple months more, let him do shit welds until I finally give him the let him in on the clues um the nose Well, you know,
Gel Blasters and Encouraging Persistence in Kids
00:18:02
Speaker
that's the thing too. You know, I went to go see Frederick this week.
00:18:06
Speaker
ah Kristen was having a girl's birthday party. Oh, for Pete's sake. I know, yeah We had a family birthday on the 14th and then she had to have another birthday on the 15th with her girlfriends.
00:18:23
Speaker
And I didn't want any part of that. So i took henry I took Henry um down to Frederick's place. He's got a young son. He's about seven.
00:18:34
Speaker
And ah you know Henry was fighting me the whole way. He's like, I don't want to go What are we going to do there? I'm like, I don't know. We'll just go there and hang out.
00:18:46
Speaker
like It'll be fine. And he's like, oh, I don't know. He was whinging, complaining. And then we get there. And then his seven-year-old son comes to the door with this, like, paintball mask on.
00:19:01
Speaker
And he's like, you want to play gel blasters? Yeah.
00:19:07
Speaker
And so gel blasters, I've never seen them before. Right. They're basically paintball guns for kids. Right. They shoot Orbeez.
00:19:18
Speaker
Okay. What's an Orbee? Yeah. It's like a, I don't know what, it how like, i don't even know how to explain them. that They're like these water-based jelly balls, I guess it's called.
00:19:32
Speaker
So basically just like ah a non-wet version of a paintball. yeah It's wet, but it doesn't explode. yeah just it just disintegrates when you... And it hurts like hell. ah really Point blank. yeah yeah it's like it's I would say it's about twice as painful as a ah Nerf dart when you shoot point blank. So it's not like crazy. It doesn't leave bruises or marks. It's like, ah!
00:20:00
Speaker
Damn, that's done. you know Okay, so yeah. I'm imagining that Henry had a A bit of a ball. Yeah, well, like literally we're getting out of the car it's like, oh, I don't want to be here. And then like five minutes later he's like, this is awesome. um but but who and So that was great to see Henry sort of like blossom like that. And then we got the – Frederick has two ATVs.
00:20:28
Speaker
Yeah, okay. Proper ones? Yeah, well, kids ATVs. He also has a proper – proper bike that's scary as hell. that ah It's ah scary for me because I'm not used to riding bikes like like so that, but ah he has two kids' ATVs.
00:20:47
Speaker
And so Henry was riding on one of them. And keep in mind, it's icy too, right? Yeah, yeah. No studs on the tires. It's just, yeah. And he went to turn a corner, i kind of misjudged it, and slowly,
00:21:03
Speaker
Like crashed into the pole. Right. Like the slowest thing you've ever seen your life. Yeah. And then he's like, oh, I'm done. I don't want anything to do. I'm like, no, you can't just give up like that.
00:21:17
Speaker
That's not how this works. When you fall off or you you like you get scared, you have to get back on. Otherwise, it's going to own you. And I tried to convince him. He's like, no, I don't want to. And then Frederick said the same thing. And then he listened to Frederick and he said, of course.
00:21:34
Speaker
Don't listen dad. What the fuck does dad know?
00:21:39
Speaker
Some random friend of your dad's. Yeah. Why is this wise this an owl? ah So he gets back on the ATV. And five minutes later, he's doing donuts.
00:21:50
Speaker
Yeah, right. Like...
00:21:53
Speaker
well But fucking good on, good. Yeah, good on fucking Henry. Yeah, good on him. Fucking getting out there. That's good. I love that. Yeah, but why are we caught we why do we let our kids, like, say like give up?
00:22:08
Speaker
No. think it's a pretty common thing. Like, oh, it's okay. You know you gave it a try. It's all right. ah the No, get back on it. Yeah. Get out there and do it again. Don't be scared of it. And look and look what happened.
00:22:22
Speaker
He was out there doing donuts and skids and stuff on a little ATV. He loved it. Shooting Orby things. Yeah, yeah. And then, of course, ah the kids wanted us to, like me and Frederick, to take an Orby fight.
00:22:38
Speaker
Right. Yeah. So I completely destroyed Frederick, he had no idea I was hiding in his bushes. He came creeping by. I was like, ba-ba-ba-ba-ba, in the back of his head.
00:22:52
Speaker
Well, it sounds like not much has happened in the garage this this week, really.
Rally Car Completion and Beer Brewing Innovations
00:22:58
Speaker
ah Yeah, it's I mean, the steering is a big thing, though. yeah i mean It's a big part of the build. it can't steer, then it's not very good, is it?
00:23:08
Speaker
No. yeah And the fact is it works. So everything is set up now. Everything's welded. I now only have left... ah The engine needs to be mounted with a new gear linkage, which is what I'm working on this week. yeah Fuel lines need to be extended and ah also brake lines.
00:23:33
Speaker
yeah I got the new brake line, which is long enough. It's basically take the old one off, put a new one on, bleed it out. Fuel lines just need to be extended. That's easy as well.
00:23:45
Speaker
And then the gear linkage is probably the most complicated bit. Yeah. And then technically, I just need to put some wheels on it and drive it. Yeah.
00:23:55
Speaker
After that. Well, build them. Shell for it. Yeah, but like to to see that the chassis works yeah and how it drives, right? So that's my goal for this week coming is to basically get it out the garage and drive it through some skids.
00:24:10
Speaker
Nice. And that thing's scary as hell. so Well, let's hope the bigger wheels kind of take this take the scare out of it a little bit. Oh, they won't. No. Okay. You still have to remember it's like – 45, 46 maybe horsepower.
00:24:30
Speaker
to be To be honest, like if you tune them properly, which I don't know if this engine is tuned, you can get like 50, 55 horsepower out of them. right That's fairly powerful. Yeah, considering like the weight.
00:24:48
Speaker
Yeah, I mean, you know the for example, the hand truck go-kart, that engine has like 11 horsepower. Right. so you know And that's fast and fun.
00:25:01
Speaker
Yeah. yep That thing now will have you five times basically yeah the amount if it's a tuned engine, which I don't think it is, but like either way, it's like probably in excess of four times the amount of horsepower.
00:25:19
Speaker
And it's going to be a handful for sure. Sounds like a death machine, Justin. Right up your alley. Let's hope I don't break it when I drive it first. Yeah, so that's exciting.
00:25:32
Speaker
Awesome. um I don't think I have anything else to share with you for this week, but, yeah, that's ah that's it. What's been happening in your garage, Kieran?
00:25:42
Speaker
Well, I've re-brewed ah Holy Ghost. True. That's currently, I think it's nearly from finished fermenting. I just have to measure it today.
00:25:53
Speaker
Explain why you re-brewed it, by the way. um there's ah because When I'm going to turn it commercially, it has to be made in a certain way. ah And I need to make sure that that results in the flavor profile that I want.
00:26:10
Speaker
and So I need to basically try and recreate the way it's going to be brewed. ah commercially rather than the way that I did before. So um basically just got to dry hop it now and then add the chili extract, ah chili flavoring, um which is, fuck me, i I open the lid on the thing and I'm like coughing for days ah because the fucking pepper, but that just this, what's it called? them
00:26:44
Speaker
Oh, the capsicum. No, what is it called? the the and The actual spicy bit in chili. Isn't it called capsum? Yeah, go yeah, the capsum or whatever. Just, yeah fuck, it's just right up in your in your eyes, watering your eyes and your nose. Just like this stuff is so fucking strong. I'm like, I think I'm probably going to put 50 mils into like 100 liters. No, not even 100, but there.
00:27:09
Speaker
be less than 50 mils in this batch just ah just to give it the just that touch of heat. um So, yeah, I mean, it's just going to be a real fascinating, um yeah, fascinating to see how it comes out.
00:27:25
Speaker
So, and I'm actually brewing right at this very second, Justin, i'm where I've got a new beer mashing as we speak. It's downstairs in the garage just sitting there at 64 degrees circulating.
00:27:44
Speaker
um And that's going to be the Nordic New World Blonde. Oh, okay. um So there's if you remember the Nordic series of beers, like the Triple, i thought I needed to build on that.
00:28:03
Speaker
um I have some darker options that I've brewed before, but the reality is those are slow movers and I need a fast mover. And so Blonde is a typical beer that moves fairly fast in comparison.
00:28:18
Speaker
um One of the most sold beers at the Wine Monopoly is Leffe Blonde from Leffe. And so I took that, a little inspiration from Leffe, and then I'm like, well,
00:28:33
Speaker
Let's garage avenge if I am. Nice. patent pending T-shirt. um And the so I basically decided i'm going to I'm going to add new world tops to this.
00:28:49
Speaker
So I did a bit of research. The main thing with new world tops is, you know, we're talking when I talk about new world tops, I'm talking about the new generation of all these IPA hops that we know today, like Citra and Amarillo and Mosaic and all these kind of exciting hops.
00:29:08
Speaker
Problem is, is that these hops can really clash with the yeast profile on typically on a on a Belgian style beer. So you need to be really selective with the hop choices that you choose.
00:29:22
Speaker
So I've done that, um made some selection based on that. And ah I think it's going to be really good. We'll find out. ah Cool.
00:29:33
Speaker
So, yeah, it's going to have some Centennial – no, Columbus. Sorry, Columbus is going have in it, Columbus Tomahawk, which is kind of like a floral, little bit citrusy hop.
00:29:46
Speaker
And it's going to have some classic sours, which is the one of the classic hops that you would use. It would be like this. And it's also going to have Amarillo, which is like – um Typically, people would recognize Amarillo for beers that taste a little bit like oranges, and that's the Amarillo hop doing that. So that's kind of like a mix of these fruity things that will complement this kind of spicy esteriness, which hopefully will kind of make like this, hopefully a nice kind of fruit salad mix ah for the beer that make it really fresh and and a little bit more fruity than normal.
00:30:22
Speaker
So that's the plan. We'll see how that goes. so Oh, that's exciting. Like something completely new now. Yeah. So there's been a lot of like thoughts about product development and new things to go, new ways to go.
00:30:37
Speaker
ah saw something the other day from Mountain Culture in Australia and they're doing like a juice series now, which is interesting. and that's pairing hops with juices.
00:30:50
Speaker
So I'm like, that's that's kind of interesting too, because obviously you have hops that provide some kind of fruitiness and then actually pairing that with real fruit in to kind of boost that profile maybe.
00:31:05
Speaker
So we'll kind of, ah there's lots of lots of interesting things happening all the time. And I'm trying to just, don't see where it goes and Whatever I have time to test brew, basically. so yep.
00:31:18
Speaker
And ah the search for a new contract brewer continues. um I have a lead that actually kind of panned out. Well, it hasn't panned out yet, but it sounds really positive at this stage. So I'm waiting to hear back from them.
00:31:37
Speaker
It wasn't a good sign when the person I talked to said, just CC this other person in the email because um the brewer's a bit slow. i was just like, not a good sign. But her enthusiasm when I talked to her was something that I can really appreciate because okay there's there's not a lot of enthusiasm around these things these days. so Local or not local? A little bit. i'm It's towards Frederikstad. So it's ah it's an now's hour and a half drive away. But you know what? That's better than Lufthansa.
00:32:14
Speaker
At least for the IPAs and things, I think it's going to be the right kind of move. so Okay. And, um yeah. And I tasted the quad, but all bottled that like a week and a half ago.
00:32:27
Speaker
Yeah. um It was flat because I think the yeast is struggling to metabolize the rest of the sugar left in it. um And because it's so strong already, it's at like 11.5%. The tolerance of the yeast is 12.
00:32:43
Speaker
So I think it's going to struggle to ferment out that carb, like the the bottle carbine sugar. yeah and So... I'm kind of going to give it a couple of weeks and test another bottle. And if it doesn't, if it's still flat, I mean, it did have a little when I opened it. So it's doing something.
00:33:04
Speaker
ah So it's, there's something happening in there, but it was pretty flat when I poured into glass. And the, and the but the, the beer itself is tasting pretty fucking awesome.
00:33:18
Speaker
Oh, there's like, it's so beautifully complex. um I think it'll be even better in a few months, like, just to let some of the darker malts, like, mellow out, some of the candy sugar and stuff to mellow out. But far out, it's tasting pretty fucking good.
00:33:37
Speaker
And it hides that 11.5%, like, so well. Very nice. You're just like... beautiful And it's, like, knocking that shit back and before you know it.
00:33:51
Speaker
You'll be on your ass. So that's really fun. um And yeah, that's um that's kind of the update for me for now.
00:34:02
Speaker
um I was at a restaurant yesterday. We went on a date and last night. and Was that is this a date or was this like extension of Christian's birthday again? Well, one might say that's an extension, but no, it was a date. yeah we have oh We talked about last week the scratch dates.
00:34:20
Speaker
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. So we did this because the kids are not home. So we're free. we Like forever. Like we never have this opportunity. So decided to go on a date, went to a restaurant.
00:34:35
Speaker
The restaurant was really nice. Then we were looking at their drinks menu and looked at their beer menu. I'm like, what the hell? Pills or something?
00:34:48
Speaker
Ors, everything ors. Yeah, yeah. And the the worst thing is it didn't match any of their food. No. What kind of food were they? Yeah, I mean, they like we had this beautiful like um lamb.
00:35:02
Speaker
so I think it was well like though like a water bath cooked lamb. Yes. Really tender and really and like – Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, really lovely lamb. ah Kristen had this duck as well.
00:35:16
Speaker
And they also have burgers. I think they have to in these days because people are just so unadventurous in Norway. But yeah, they're... but yeah the The beer menu was shockingly bad. So I went to the, when we went to pay, I sort of explained like, oh i saw you didn't really have any good beers on the menu.
00:35:38
Speaker
My brother's got a small brewery, you know, um would you be interested in taking on something a bit different? And then she expressed, she was the head waiter. Yeah.
00:35:51
Speaker
You know, and she expressed like, oh, yeah, we're we're actually actively looking for like small craft brewery. They're doing something that will match our restaurant profile a bit better.
00:36:02
Speaker
Mm-hmm. So, yeah, i put you put you up. Yep. She made me, like, type in your website. And then the funny thing was, Kieran, I saw her eyes light up when she saw your website.
00:36:15
Speaker
she I think most like beer most brewery websites suck balls. It's true. yeah So for for her, she's like, oh, this looks interesting.
Exploring Beer Opportunities in Fine Dining
00:36:30
Speaker
so either would say just hats off to you because that that website made her interested enough to say, yeah, I will pass this on to my to the owner of the restaurant. Nice. ah did so After you sent me the message, I did did find an email and send them ah hey, what's up? Mm-hmm.
00:36:52
Speaker
So we'll see if they get back to me. So that's cool. i need to I want to get more into like that fine dining. I think especially the Belgian-style beers will really suit that kind of menu.
00:37:03
Speaker
Yeah, because I saw at the restaurant there were like two tables with like groups, and one table had a bunch of guys, and I think the Nordic Triple would have gone really well there.
00:37:15
Speaker
Yeah. Because like they got a mix of like different... ah food or I guess you'd say. ah Some guy's got the just a burger and then other guy's got the like nicer food.
00:37:28
Speaker
And then you know ah to have the the Nordic Triple on the table to share would have been actually super nice and ah like a nice sort of experience exactly what you were going for, right? Yeah, yeah.
00:37:43
Speaker
So I just saw so much opportunity there in those type of restaurants for your beers to shine. Yeah. So I want to encourage you just to go find those places and and allow, just go talk with them and and try and get some some of those 2,000 bottles lying around. so Yeah, triple at least. I mean, obviously there's this blonde coming and and I think the quad is going to be a real winner as well for like definitely for a dessert.
00:38:12
Speaker
kind of one or even the double would work really well with like red meats so there's yeah there's lots of lots of opportunity absolutely Kieran what's ah double rainbow all the way across the sky
00:38:35
Speaker
mind blown blowing my mind this week
Community Generosity and Personal Progress
00:38:41
Speaker
Yeah. a Is Eiketan og Trearbeid. That's Anders Abrahamsen.
00:38:55
Speaker
is a guy I sent some beer to yeah a couple of weeks ago. And he gave me some lovely feedback on the beers. And it really seems like a really nice guy. Shout out to... So, yeah, to if you want to check him out on Instagram, it's at ikatan underscore teryarbeid.
00:39:14
Speaker
um And he is making me some laser engraved Eucharist coasters made out of like...
00:39:26
Speaker
oak barrels ah so I'm just like you know I've been mind blown fuck people are awesome Yeah, people are awesome. Especially this maker community too, people making cool stuff. Like some of the people I've met just out of this world, cool.
00:39:43
Speaker
um No one really – like the general public doesn't really appreciate them of what they're doing, but the amount of – what's generosity? That's the word I was looking for. yeah Generosity there is so amazing.
00:39:57
Speaker
Yes, because I didn't ask for him at all. he was like – I sent him a message because I actually forgot to follow up with him on the beers. And I sent him messages to say thanks for the feedback. and And the rest of the couple weeks after he replied.
00:40:12
Speaker
And then he said, you havel can you send me your logo I want to make some coasters for you. I was like, what? Okay, cool. So, yeah. So I sent him a file and he he's making some stuff for me. So that's really fun.
00:40:26
Speaker
Anders, you're awesome. Yeah. So cheers to Anders at Akitan Treabide. So, cheers. That's what's blowing my mind. What's blowing your mind this week, Justin?
00:40:41
Speaker
What's blowing my mind is that I tapped my friend Thomas is out in BJJ. ah Boom. BJJ? Yeah, Brazilian jiu-jitsu.
00:40:52
Speaker
Okay. yeah As you guys have known, I have been trying this sport for a couple of weeks now. Hmm. ah I used the same leg lock I used on the other dude. Yeah, nice. The other week where I i tapped him out.
00:41:10
Speaker
Thomas, yeah he's been doing – my friend, he's been doing it for maybe three or four years now. And he's like, oh, should we you don't should we roll? I went on Saturday. It's like they call it open mat. So, you can just sort of just roll with anybody.
00:41:25
Speaker
And he's like, should we roll? I'm like, yep, sure. And then, you know, he started on the ground. So I just grabbed his feet, put his foot right in a leg lock and went, ba-boom. And he tapped out like a bitch. ah ah that' so I felt so good.
00:41:41
Speaker
But then I realized like, oh, wait a second. Now I've tapped him out in the first 30 seconds of our like fight. Now I have four minutes and 30 seconds of him completely dominating me. Yeah.
00:41:54
Speaker
yeah nice Yeah, that sucked a little bit. ah But to be honest, it blew my mind that I still want to do this. I mean, to be honest, it's the most awkward, uncomfortable sport you can really start.
00:42:12
Speaker
yeah like There's just this fucking sweaty dude on top of your head. trying to kill you like it's not really the it's not a great sport to try and sell to somebody else like all right so what you're gonna do you're gonna be on the ground and there's gonna be a guy twice your size with 10 times the amount of skill as you sweating all over you wrapping you up like a pretzel and trying to kill you whilst rubbing his junk on you yeah so so That's why I was a little bit like BJJ. I'm like, is this like an underground club? Do
00:42:52
Speaker
you need to have like a secret password with you come in the door?
00:42:59
Speaker
oh that's cool. That's awesome. That's been blowing my mind this week is I'm actually feeling like I'm getting good at this thing. And ah some people have said to me like,
00:43:11
Speaker
the last couple of weeks, they're kind of surprised how strong I am o and how i can like how considering i have zero experience, my strength helps me, ah i guess, stay ah less dead.
00:43:30
Speaker
Less dead. Yeah, it's it's awesome. ye ah But you know with everything mind blown, there's always something that's given you the
00:43:42
Speaker
Who number two work for?
00:43:48
Speaker
oh hey Hey, just grab a hold of something, bite your lip and give it hell. Come on. We're going to get through this.
00:44:00
Speaker
Go on, Justin. Tell me what's giving you the shits this week.
Valentine's Day Frustrations and Alternatives
00:44:05
Speaker
Valentine's Day. ah Welcome to the club. No, like, I'm sorry, but Valentine's is not for men at all.
00:44:15
Speaker
No. And no wonder men don't want to do it. hear So I've spoken to a lot of people and they're like, ah did you get your missus a Valentine's present? They're like, nah, nah, not into it, right?
00:44:32
Speaker
you I get it. Like, I'm... You don't have that option. You'll be killed. Yeah, I don't have that option. But like what's the incentive for me to to get my wife a Valentine's present?
00:44:47
Speaker
when To be honest, in the 19 years we've been together, the most I've gotten for a Valentine's Day was a card and ah and a chocolate. Yeah, it's really one-sided, isn't it? Yeah, there's no incentive for me to do something I never get anything in return that I actually want in a Valentine's gift, right? It doesn't have to be fancy, but at least tailor it to me man. think this is the challenge, right? Because we've gone from that very...
00:45:21
Speaker
like patriarchal kind of society view where the man is like, yeah, just chop wood and fucking, you know, fuck stuff. And idea, right? Where like, you know, the only reason women pushed for like Valentine's Day was because like they finally like, because he basically ignored them all the time.
00:45:44
Speaker
until they, you know, needed to fuck. And then, yeah and so then now with things have changed. Society's moved. Men are more open generally and more in touch with themselves and, and, you know, communicate better than they probably have in many a millennia.
00:46:04
Speaker
And, ah and yeah, equality is back on the, is on the board, but it seems ah it's interesting that, I don't know, maybe we're going down a rabbit hole here, but... Oh yeah, let's go down a rabbit hole. Let's do this on Garen. um But come on, like, okay, equality is all well and good, but men haven't, like, what's happening is women are either, how depending on how you see it, coming above men or pushing men down, depending on how you see it.
00:46:36
Speaker
There's no actual equality. It's kind of like, well, fuck you for the patriarchy. Like... We've been oppressed for too long, so now we're going to do the same to you. mike that like who like yeah who's Who's the bigger person here? like i That I would disagree with.
00:46:53
Speaker
I don't think that it's happening like that. I ah i honestly think it's it's more just women want equality on their terms, not on anyone else's.
00:47:06
Speaker
Yeah, but that's like that's not what I mean in the sense that- So where they'll take what they want from equality yeah and nothing more. But that's what I mean. like It's like, well, it's not it's not equal equality. It's like- When it suits me, yeah I will take that.
00:47:22
Speaker
When it doesn't suit me, i I want to stay as it was. Yeah, right. And then no wonder men are fucking confused. Yeah. Like, we're like, i well I don't know. And like and men everywhere are just like, fucking what's my purpose in life? I've got no idea.
00:47:38
Speaker
You know, like they just turn up and do their job. The whole idea of being a provider is kind of like windling away. You know, as women are generally getting better paid, generally. And I mean, not, I'm sorry.
00:47:52
Speaker
Their pay is coming up, as I'm i'm saying as a very general term. Generally, especially like in Australia, women are still getting shafted in terms of salary. But, you know, it's just like things are equaling out, but men haven't figured out where to go yet.
00:48:09
Speaker
I don't think so. Yeah, I mean, I put a lot of effort into Valentine's Days over the 19 years I've been together with Kristen. You know, she's gotten some amazing gifts and amazing, thoughtful, creative gifts along throughout the years. And what did you get? and Nothing.
00:48:30
Speaker
Like, ah look that let's not take this away. Kristen is an amazing person. She does amazing things for me and our family. Yeah. But on that day, there's no equality.
00:48:44
Speaker
It's just there there's no like – That's your job. Yeah, that's my job. I have to do that. So it gives me the fucking shit. So I've decided that I'm going to push forward beef and blowjob day. Beef and blowjob. Yeah, okay. Yeah.
00:49:02
Speaker
So I, in fact, put it in our family calendar. In the family calendar. Yeah. 14th of March is a beef and blowjob day. And so i encourage I encourage all you men listening to put it in your family calendar as a thing. Don't say anything.
00:49:22
Speaker
Just put it in the calendar and see what happens. yeah Because know if she does nothing or sees it and doesn't respect it, then be like...
00:49:36
Speaker
i I understand why Valentine's is off the cards. Like, okay, Lynn and I, we don't have like Valentine's Day as a thing. Like we both just got this as fucked. Like we don't we don't bother with it. Yeah.
00:49:47
Speaker
But, and and it's pretty mutual. So I'm happy with that. She says it But if you got her a Valentine's card, she would love it I'm sure. But in the same way that she would love it, I would love it if she fucking got something nice for me.
00:50:03
Speaker
right that's my point so like we just but lynn and i talked about this the other day i'm like this is so like ah i'm i you know what ah i don't know was about to go down a rabbit hole my shits about like you know how the brewery industry is fucked but You know what? ah you know what's actually giving me the shits this week?
00:50:29
Speaker
No doubt, Karen. it's the It's the double standards, right? So, like, I'm, you know, in this equality world that we live in where women and men are equal, you know, I'm supposed to bend over fucking backwards to, like, for just the hint of, like, maybe getting a bit of action in the bedroom, right? Right.
00:50:50
Speaker
And then, like, as soon as, like, I say the wrong thing, ah she gets distracted by, like, you know, ah phone call from the girlfriend or whatever it is, you know, like, it's get the game's off. Like, it's game over. It's like, nope, shut up, shop. See you later. Nope, it's not happening tonight, Kieran. Sorry.
00:51:10
Speaker
And I'm like, I've done all the legwork. ah But I put all the extra work in, building up, you know, the whole day, you know, we've had a really great day together. We've spent some quality time, done all the thing.
00:51:26
Speaker
And like one thing will unravel it all. And then she's like, nah, shut up, shut up, sorry. ah This happens to me all the time. then And the thing is they not they don't even know it's happening.
00:51:37
Speaker
They don't understand like that they just cut you off. Yeah, yeah. No, but this is what gives me the shits, right? Because if it was reversed... Do you think there would there would be a fucking uproar, right?
00:51:51
Speaker
No, I'm not talking about sex because, like, generally, like we can agree that men probably want sex generally a lot more than women, right? Yeah. So and I'm talking about the shit that gets them like excited about sex, i.e. like when you do all the the housework, when you clean, when you fix that thing you've that's been broken for a long time, you save the day, you do the things like, and I'm like, I'm like, whatever, I'm not just, no, no,
00:52:22
Speaker
not No, I'm not going to do it. Don't feel like it. You're going to start it and then just not finish. Yeah, right. I just said, no, just decided, just don't want to do it anymore. Just started started of the job, just going to finish, top there.
00:52:36
Speaker
yeah i like the double standard that will be like, you know, well you can't do that. Like it's still messy around here. I'm like, come on. Sound familiar?
00:52:47
Speaker
yeah What about my blue balls? Yeah. Now, i'm not saying like it's a right that I, you know, that my wife services my need, but at the same time, it should be, it should go both ways.
00:53:00
Speaker
Like, ah this happens to me all the time. Like, I'll be, we'll be like making out, for example. Yeah. And then she's like, oh, I've got to do this. Or, I'll get a phone call. Or someone else called. ah Then it's just off.
00:53:15
Speaker
Yeah, right. Like, what? What happened? Yeah.
00:53:19
Speaker
So like at some point, maybe you shouldn't take that phone call. Yeah. like you Like if I was, if I did that to you in that moment, you'd be fucking pissed. Oh yeah. Right. You'd be like, yeah, yeah.
00:53:32
Speaker
You know, like, and then I'm like, nah. So I'm just like, umm that's what you're giving me the shit. Could you imagine you make it out with her? And then the phone rings like, Hey bro, what's up? yeah yeah. I'm done. Nothing. that like ah Nothing Yeah.
00:53:45
Speaker
not that valuable
00:53:49
Speaker
New carburetor. Tell me all about it. 2.3 litre turbo. How much jetting has
00:54:00
Speaker
it got? mean, there'll be enough. What's mileage to get on that thing now?
00:54:08
Speaker
but I think it's just that double standard of like, I'm required to put in all the work. And they're just required just like – and then as soon as it's not convenient for them, it's game off.
00:54:21
Speaker
Yeah, we could go deep into this, Karen, but I think we'll wrap it up by – what your recommendation is though this week instead,
Socializing and Personal Routines
00:54:31
Speaker
and Do you want to sing your little jingle? Recommendation, the recommendation. There you go. You just did it. There you go. You just did it, Jules.
00:54:43
Speaker
My recommendation is that, um you know what? Dry January and is over. So go out and hang out with your friends. Go out and have a nice time with your friends.
00:54:54
Speaker
Like, i mean, you don't have to drink, but I'm just, I'm using it as a like, you know, like winter is the days are getting longer. Like, let's just not wait until the snow melts. Like get out and be social and hang out with someone. And that's some fun. Like on Saturday, I went out to a concert. I went out to a rap concert, actually. Yeah.
00:55:13
Speaker
So from a Norwegian rapper called Damien, which my friend Petter does some management for. So i went along with the show. was good fun. And hang out with some other friends after. And we had a great time.
00:55:27
Speaker
Like the drinking was a very small part of it. In fact, it was just like nice, so nice to be social. So, yeah, get out and see you friends. That's my recommendation. Stop being a hermit in the wintertime.
00:55:40
Speaker
Get out. Do something. Meet some people. Have some fun. Nice. Yeah. Your recommendation, Justin?
00:55:50
Speaker
I want to recommend a good morning training routine. Ooh. in I think it doesn't have to be complicated like mine. Mm-hmm.
00:56:04
Speaker
ah but I can see the results of mine really well now. And I often like get out of the shower and I'm like, Hey, hey good looking. So it's a nice feeling, right?
00:56:17
Speaker
I don't feel like, Oh, you've got this big gut and you know, like got a couple of spare tires going on. Like that's not, and I feel good about what I'm doing and I think it's consistency.
00:56:30
Speaker
So For example, Kristen, she said, okay, when the kids go training, I'll go training. And that's only twice a week.
00:56:42
Speaker
And you get kind of out of that routine. And then if something comes up, you end up dropping it and it's done. Whereas if you decide you're going to do it in the morning, try and do it before the kids get up if you can, if that's possible.
00:57:00
Speaker
Because then... you've at least got it done and it's finished and you can say, I'd achieve something this morning. and so ah So my morning routine, for those who haven't heard about it, is quite extensive.
00:57:15
Speaker
ah It includes running in the ice cold in shorts and T-shirts, ah During the winter, ah weights, training, kettlebells, and yoga, and meditation.
00:57:29
Speaker
So I have like this extensive routine. How long does that take you generally? let's add ah About an hour and a half. Okay. I mean, that's not that bad considering like most people, they try and go to the gym like an hour and then, you know.
00:57:41
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. So my routine takes a while, which I understand most most people don't have the luxury of that. so ah But I would suggest like 20 minutes in the morning. like ah So there are days where i don't do that.
00:57:59
Speaker
And in the in the summer, my routine is also a little different. I do like an ice bath to start and and then other things. But um
00:58:10
Speaker
there is a fallback that I have when I don't do anything. For example, if I'm super sore after like jiu-jitsu or something like this, like I feel like i maybe if I go do a kettlebell workout, I'll feel even worse. So just just keep it simple. yeah So the minimum I do is 30 push-ups, 30 squats, 30 sit-ups.
00:58:31
Speaker
thirty squat thirty setups Yeah. That's the minimum I do. And I would recommend if that's anything I could recommend is that you start with that.
00:58:42
Speaker
Every morning you just do 30 push-ups, 30 sit-ups, 30 squats. That's it. And I think you'll come far with that. Yeah. Well, the thing is it's an easy thing and then you get into the mentality of it, yeah?
00:58:57
Speaker
And then it's easier to expand on it. And I've never been like feeling worse after I've done exercise. You always feel better. those endorphins going.
00:59:08
Speaker
and once that the like Actually, Lynn was talking about something. and She'd listened to some podcast about this micro-exercising where you get your heart rate up for four and a half minutes every day.
00:59:20
Speaker
And that's that's enough to basically blow out the cobwebs and kickstart things for the day. So they yeah makes sense like literally run on the spot for four and half minutes intensely. Like job done.
00:59:33
Speaker
Four half minutes. Everyone's got four and a half minutes. Might look like an idiot, but that's who's who's watching. Yeah, I think. Do it in the shower. it's so simple. yeah It doesn't have to be overcomplicated. So I want to recommend some sort of morning training routine. I think it will change your life if you don't do it already.

Speaker
It's so good. it was It is pretty fucking good. There you Because you'll lose sleep not only because of that, but then because you watched – Severance, just before watched The Jackal. And you're like, what is going on? We're two and half seasons in. I don't understand what the hell is going on. have a theory. i have a theory of what's going on.
01:00:32
Speaker
Oh, share. I want to know. I have a theory that the the Mark S is working on something to do with his dead wife.
01:00:42
Speaker
There you go Like, he's like, because she's actually not his dead wife. It's like ah like a clone or something. And that's why she's so discombobulated. They're basically looking at like, you know, they're basically reprogramming her.
01:00:56
Speaker
And he, and that's why the feelings come up when he's like with the numbers.
01:01:04
Speaker
Yeah. So then he's like reprogramming her. And so that maybe she'll be like a true version of herself in the end. That's my theory. Don't hold me to it. I might be completely wrong, but this is that there you For those who haven't watched Severance, I'm sorry I ruined it for you.
01:01:22
Speaker
You haven't ruined it. it's so like It's so confusing. No one that's watching this series understands what the hell's going on with goats and bloody paintings and weird, crazy, like... What's with the Kya religion thing? likes It's super fucking freaky.
01:01:40
Speaker
It's super weird. it's said It's really well done, though. like I was a bit surprised it was like directed by Ben Stiller. Yeah. Yeah. But it's he's done it really well.
01:01:52
Speaker
Yeah, fantastic. Well, you've got a mash to look after. Yeah, it's probably hit mash out already, so I've got get on to that. Hopefully, adds it hasn't just exploded everywhere.
01:02:05
Speaker
Send me a picture of it as a scene I to see. Sometimes like the pump can like, it's got this touchscreen and like sometimes it's happened once where it accidentally just Somehow like some condensation fell on it or something.
01:02:20
Speaker
And it, uh, and all sudden went like full speed and they're just fucking just water and what was everywhere, but they've got the lid on. So it shouldn't be so bad.
