Introduction to Episode 6 Review

00:00:30
Speaker
Hello and welcome to another special episode of Games Over Plastic. This is part of the ongoing series in which we review each Last of Us Season 2 episode.

Ellie and Joel's Backstory

00:00:42
Speaker
This was Episode 6, the penultimate episode of Season 2. um And this was, as we mentioned last week, this was a full flashback episode. You get to see some backstory with Ellie and Joel.
00:00:56
Speaker
So as always, we're going to go run through it. We're going to give our thoughts. We're going to comment on what we thought, and it will be a good time. Before we do that, um if you are listening, if you are watching, thank

Emotional Impact and Initial Impressions

00:01:08
Speaker
you. Leave us a review. Leave us a rating. Leave us a comment.
00:01:11
Speaker
All feedback is good feedback we just want to hear what you have to say if you're watching on youtube and you don't understand yes this is an audio podcast as well you can find us on spotify apple podcasts where really wherever you listen to podcasts um but yeah before we get into the actual episode let's dive in just give our initial thoughts um midnight what do think what do you think about this episode I thought this was a very good episode. I think this is probably the greatest episode of this season for me.
00:01:43
Speaker
um You know, it was great. It was all Joel and Ellie. It had that classic vibes, like Last of Us Part 1 type vibes to it. um And it was also also very emotionally powerful, especially the ending.
00:01:57
Speaker
i will admit that there was some moist eyes there at the ending there, but we'll get to that. ah Great episode, I thought. All right good, good. Hodge, how about you? Vacation, Hodge?
00:02:10
Speaker
Yeah, coming to you live from Alerta.

Joel's Future Speculation

00:02:14
Speaker
thought the episode was very good. i Well, now I'm convinced that Joel is not returning for the next season. I am 100% convinced because but half of the scenes that were in this episode play later in the game. So the fact that they're already showing them this early in the Last of Us Part II story, they're just making sure Joel is done because now he's in every single movie in Hollywood. So they're like, right, we have to get him away from...
00:02:44
Speaker
from this production, get all this stuff done on and out of the way. So they ah they definitely brought him back so they could get everything out of the way so he doesn't to return. But overall, I really liked it. It might be my favorite from this season, but I'm not sure. I'd really have to think about it. But overall, it was a very good episode. But obviously, as always, I have my complaints about it, which we will surely get to. But yeah, initial thoughts. It was good.
00:03:10
Speaker
Yeah, I really enjoyed the episode as well. I'm not sure if it was my favorite yet. I still haven't decided on that, but it's definitely up

Bella Ramsey's Performance

00:03:18
Speaker
there. um I did enjoy it. I think this solidus ah solidifies in my brain that the only good Ellie that Bella Ramsey can play is young Ellie.
00:03:29
Speaker
I think she does a much better job at young Ellie than older Ellie. I agree. Completely agree. yeah Well, that's because she looks like a child still. No, I know that, but I think she definitely does. like and Now I understand why I wasn't so like down on her in season one as I am in season two.
00:03:48
Speaker
i was much more i'm much more like i'm totally I'm much more with the camp of, like wow, Bella Ramsey's terrible at this acting role compared to in season one where I was like, don't think she's terrible, guys. I don't think she's great, but I don't think she was like awful in season one. But now um this kind of solidifies what I was thinking.
00:04:07
Speaker
Yeah, she does a decent job at with like the sarcastic quips and stuff from Ellie, younger Ellie. Yeah, I was actually surprised how well she did that kind of stuff. But yeah, i agree with you. She's better as young Ellie than as young Ellie for sure.
00:04:22
Speaker
Yeah. um All

Flashback to 1983: Young Joel and Tommy

00:04:24
Speaker
right. So I think we can get right into the episode. And I really enjoyed how this started with the cold open of flashing back to 1983. And we get a young Joel. This is brand new stuff. We did not see this in the game. This is brand new to us. And it opens up with Joel and Tommy. Tommy's crying because he got caught, you know, buying the weed.
00:04:46
Speaker
And, um... we don't They don't allude to... Yeah, they don't they don't tell us what happened, but john Tommy's scared that his dad is going to beat him up, going to get the belt. And Joel says, that's not going to happen. Don't worry about it. And when Joel's father returns, we find out Joel's father is a cop.
00:05:03
Speaker
And he asked him what happened and Joel lies to him, which is kind of a little bit of a foreshadow to what we see throughout the episode of Joel telling some lies.
00:05:15
Speaker
um But the father instantly knows he's not telling the truth and says, um basically he tells him what really happened. Yeah, I know Tommy was... buying the weed and you came and beat the crap out of the kid um and that if it wasn't for me you guys would be in juvie and uh yeah what did you guys think of this scene hodge you want to start Sure. um Well, first of all, I loved it because Tony Dalton played his dad. I love that actor. He's Lalo in ah Better Call Saul.
00:05:45
Speaker
Great actor. And he's going to be in Intergalactic, which actually i was reading. Apparently, Neil met him at the Emmys or something, and they got him to be in the show. And he loved him so much in the show. That's why he's in Intergalactic. Oh, that's pretty cool.
00:05:58
Speaker
Yeah. So that's why he's going to be in that game. but ah But yeah, overall, it was an awesome, yeah, completely brand new backstory that we never saw from Joel in the games. Really cool to learn kind of where he gets his tough love kind of mentality ah towards Ellie's because his dad was obviously little more abusive than Joel is. But then it has that great line at the end where he's just like, I hope you do a little better than me or whatever that.
00:06:24
Speaker
Yeah. crime was that Cause he says like, I did better than my father. So I hope you do a little bit better than me. Yeah. And then I don't know if you guys noticed this, but when at the end of the scene, when he gets up to go talk to Tommy, he puts his hand on Joel's shoulder and he has the exact same watch that Joel has that he wears.
00:06:42
Speaker
I don't know. I did not notice that. I don't know if it's the same watch or just like the similar one, but it's the exact, basically same model that Joel wears. I don't know if that was on purpose or not, but I'm guessing it was because it did kind of show his hands rest there for a second. So I think they wanted you to notice that, but yeah, overall it was a great, great thing of him being tough. He's like, I don't want my kids, you know, to be fuck ups basically. And,
00:07:09
Speaker
So I'm tough on you because I want you guys to be better than me kind of thing. And yeah, it was a great scene.
00:07:17
Speaker
That's what it was. I'm glad I let you go first so I look a little bit less retarded because I was going to mention I was going to say, like wasn't did you guys notice who his father was? I was going to say that he was the dude who played ah Pablo Escobar in Narcos, but that's not who it was. That was Wagner Mora. I just looked it up. It's not the same actor.
00:07:38
Speaker
um It was Lala Salazar whatever from um Better Call Saul. I think. Yeah. That's Yeah. Okay. My bad. Um, that, yeah, that's where I recognize, I knew I recognized him for some reason. I thought it was a Pablo Escobar, but nope, it was a Salamanca or whatever.
00:07:54
Speaker
Okay. So I'm glad that you went first. I looked slightly less retarded, but, uh, yeah. So this was a good scene. I enjoyed the scene. I thought it was really cool. So his dad is apparently, uh, you know, somewhat abusive, but not a complete douchebag.
00:08:08
Speaker
Uh, he handled this well. Yeah. Not breaking jaws. Yeah. Yeah, not completely evil. He just goes slightly overboard. um But he handled this one well, you know gave his son a little talk, gave him a beer, told him, hey, I'm doing my best, do a little better than me.
00:08:22
Speaker
And then he left without beating them. So that was good. um And yeah, i I didn't notice the watch, actually. I did not notice that. And I thought for a second that the watch was a gift from his daughter, but it wasn't. She just repaired it, right?
00:08:34
Speaker
yeah So maybe it was the father's watch that she repaired. Okay. Well, I bet it was since they showed it. That's probably yeah what's his father's watch and he still wears it. I noticed in this episode, he's wearing the watch, although it was broken.
00:08:47
Speaker
So great, great scene. Great scene. I don't have too much more to add than that. I thought it was nice. And of course that quote do a little better than me. and We'll get to that later on. Joel used that quote later in the episode to Ellie. Yeah.
00:08:58
Speaker
So i like I said, like i said and this is a big like alluding to foreshadowing of kind of the personality of Joel and what really inspired him for later. Even that like lying part. you know Lying to try to protect someone or lying for the benefit of what he feels is the, you know, the benefit of others.
00:09:18
Speaker
And then we get to the present day. well not present day. We get to Jackson. It's been two months since Ellie and Joel got there. And um Joel is talking to Seth now.

Joel's Birthday Gifts to Ellie

00:09:30
Speaker
And he comes into the bar and he hands him some Legos. And find out it's a favor for Ellie's birthday. And I pretty much, when he... It was pretty obvious when he said, like, oh I need you to do something for me. blah, blah. Like, and he goes, oh, vanilla or chocolate. Like, I picked up on that. It was going to be the cake and it was probably going for a birthday.
00:09:49
Speaker
i thought it was a really good scene. I like the whole, oh, I searched those houses for these Legos and good stuff. It's like, I searched them too. Joel's like, well, i'm the smuggler. So I don't know what you used to do, but I know where to look, which is funny.
00:10:02
Speaker
Do you think he's telling the truth there? Probably. He is a little liar, but i don't I don't see why he would lie about that. He probably found him in the house. Who knows? Yeah, i think he's just probably better at scavenging where, yeah, Seth says he's just a cop or whatever, whereas so Joel being ah one who goes against the law, I'm sure he would know better places to find shit.
00:10:26
Speaker
Yeah. um Yeah, I thought it was was interesting. I like how it was... um Seth's like, oh, my grandkids are going to love these. And he's like so surprised he finds the Legos. Legos are, of course, in pristine condition, of course, even though it's been years.
00:10:42
Speaker
um Yeah, and then moving on, we get to Joel making the guitar for Ellie. Again, it's going to be his birthday. I thought it was a lot of them did a really cool job with the whole bone thing, and he like structures it.
00:10:55
Speaker
He even gets the design for the moth from looking at Ellie's drawings and stuff. What did you guys think of that?
00:11:03
Speaker
It was good. I mean, I didn't know really anything about the moth. um But yeah, there is a scene that we'll get to in a bit, right? Where we find out the meaning behind the moth, allegedly. So is that on this list here? Did you have that when he talked to the therapist?
00:11:15
Speaker
Yep. Yeah. Okay. So we'll get to that. later But yeah, i thought I thought he did a great job with the guitar and it was a nice, thoughtful gift.
00:11:23
Speaker
Yeah, I never, they never really explained the moth aspect of it in the game, did they? don't ever remember them really explaining it. No, they didn't. They don't really explain it at all, actually, which is funny. Yeah, that's what I thought.
00:11:40
Speaker
but yeah it was ah It was a really cool scene. it's it was because Obviously, when Ellie was going through Joel's house after he died, ah you saw all kind of the woodworking stuff. so It was cool to see Joel's stunt double doing that ah stuff for him to make Pedro look like he knows what he's doing. but but yeah it was really It was really interesting that instead of it being like a guitar that he found or something, like he kind of yeah restored one and made it for her, which was Really cool. And then it was nice because it kind of leads back to the the scene we didn't get to see in the show from the game where Joel is cleaning the the guitar that he's about to give Ellie while he's explaining to Tommy what happened in the first game.
00:12:24
Speaker
And so since we didn't get that scene, it was really nice to see him still getting to the part where he gives her the guitar. So that was that was really cool. Yeah. um And then, you know, we flash to their house. Tommy brings Ellie home and Joel is well, um Tommy and Ellie is kind of like freaking out because Ellie and intentionally burned her. So we figure out how she burned herself.
00:12:48
Speaker
And Joel at first, so what the heck happened? She she's like, well, you're doing on purpose. She's like, well, yeah, I wanted to wear short sleeves, which is, again, we get that like naci sarcastic Ellie. And Joel understands because, um you know, he's he can be an understanding guy. I think he i mean, if you're an Ellie's perspective, it it kind of would kind of would suck to have to wear long sleeves like all year.
00:13:11
Speaker
That would suck. um Obviously, there are probably better things you could have done to cover that up. But again, she's like she's a kid. She's not she's turning 15 in the coming days. So obviously, you don't think smart as a kid. And yeah, she burned her arm. So we get that little backstory there, that little part.
00:13:31
Speaker
um yeahp Yeah, I thought that was a good scene um that really, first of all, gives you a little bit of backstory about how she got the burn. But I think more importantly, the point of this scene was to show how close their relationship was at that time.
00:13:45
Speaker
Because like he hugs her as she's like emotionally and he calls her like baby girl and stuff it's like it's going to be OK. So I think the point of the scene was to show how close they were, because as this episode, they start to drift apart, as we'll see. So, yeah.
00:13:59
Speaker
I did like the i did like the ah the her being all loopy on painkillers and like she walks in and sees him and she's just like, what are you doing here? thought that was pretty funny.
00:14:10
Speaker
that pretty funny Yeah. um Yep. And so then we wake up the next morning. um She goes down to the kitchen. We have the cake from say i from Seth.
00:14:22
Speaker
Unfortunately, you got everything right except for her name. Happy birthday, Eli. i didn't even i didn't notice that. Yeah, that's why Joel's like, what the heck?
00:14:33
Speaker
He's like, yeah God dang it, Seth. That scene made me laugh so hard. That was so funny. Happy birthday, Eli. You know, the the funniest part is Seth probably thought that's how you spell Ellie.
00:14:45
Speaker
Yeah, exactly. Yeah, yeah. He's not a smart dude. So yeah, that was funny. that's the And then he's like he's like, all right, let's cut this cake and turn drama. She's like, dug into it, has like a handful of cakes. She's like, oh, it's really good.
00:14:58
Speaker
ah Very much like i know like a kid thing to do. Very much. Again, she's good kid Ellie, but yeah. Yeah. He's like, that was great.
00:15:09
Speaker
And then he gives her the guitar and she's like, oh my gosh, it's my birthday. You need to play me a song. You need to sing too. He's like I don't sing. then he plays the Future Days, obviously. We get Future Days. So then we know where Ellie was inspired by that front in the previous episode, which you know we already kind of knew that. But yeah.
00:15:28
Speaker
it does a good job. Um, she's very impressed. Um, she promised, um, they say, Oh, going to teach you how to do it. We're get lessons. Um, and then we cut a year forward to her 16th birthday.
00:15:47
Speaker
She can drive now. That's great. Yeah. Get, get her permit. Um, So, yeah, they're walking through the walking through the tree forest.
00:15:58
Speaker
And, it again, very much reminiscent of just Joel and Ellie in the first game. um Joel and Ellie are talking. And Joel even makes a joke because she mentioned she wants to go on a patrol. And she's like, you know, I'm 16 now. I should be going on patrols. Jesse went on his first patrol. And Joel's like, oh, he spent a lot of time with Jesse there.
00:16:18
Speaker
yeah You like him? She's like, no. Well, I have a pretty good eye for this stuff. No, I really don't think you do, Dad. I really don't think you do, Joel. I really don't think you do. Which is so funny because he thinks you know. It's such a dad thing. like You think you know everything. It's like, no, you really don't know.
00:16:34
Speaker
now Anyone ever talk to you about the birds and the but birds and the bees? Oh, you mean dicks and vaginas? Yeah. yeah Whoa, whoa, whoa.
00:16:47
Speaker
Yeah, it's just so funny. It's like that awkward thing where like a, say i can you imagine like like a single father having to talk to his like daughter about that stuff? i always like picture that. I'm like, it's so awkward for some of these single dads to have to do that.
00:17:00
Speaker
Oh, yeah. Which is just funny. I know this is a really powerful scene. Again, it's more of that banter we got in like the ah season one when they're just like walking around or even from the first game when you get like that, the downtime when you're traveling between places. i think that they did a really good job here. And again, I think Bella Ramsey did a tremendous job as Ellie in this scene.
00:17:22
Speaker
Yeah. And obviously this takes place after the first game where Joel had finally opened up and was basically treating her like a daughter and not like cargo. and so... Yeah, that peak like tightness between them was was great.
00:17:36
Speaker
Yeah. And then we reveal he's taking her to the museum because a giant dinosaur there, which I thought those was a really cool. um really cool opening because can you imagine them being like ellie at like fifth year she's 16 like obviously we grew up like we've we've been to museums we've seen stuff like that but like at 16 seeing that for the first time not understanding like oh my gosh like this is yeah that's that's crazy that they even have these things um and how obsessed with like space she is because they go into the actual museum and there's a space exhibit and she starts
00:18:09
Speaker
you know, rotating the, um like the basically like the rotating pulley system for the solar system. And he's like, Oh, someone must have greased it. like showing that he's like been there

Museum Visit and Space Exhibit

00:18:18
Speaker
before. So it it really goes to show like the effort Joel's putting in for these birthdays to make it special for is like, it shows how much he loves her and how, how much he wants to make things right for her. And yeah, it was great. I thought that whole opening to get there was an awesome job. I think the solar system scene was great. And then we open up and we see the space shuttle.
00:18:42
Speaker
Mm-hmm.
00:18:45
Speaker
Yeah, i was i would the one thing I was disappointed about with this scene was you could tell I watched the post-credits stuff for that like the behind-the-scenes stuff, and there were scenes where they were by the dinosaurs in the museum, so they cut out that entire part, which really sucks because that was one of my favorite parts in the game.
00:19:01
Speaker
can't remember. Isn't it it a trophy if you put a hat on every dinosaur? ah Yeah, it's a trophy if you put a hat on every dinosaur, yeah. Yeah, so it was a fun scene them going around looking all the dinosaurs before they get to the space thing.
00:19:12
Speaker
And they deleted it. They're like, oh, for time. I'm like, you're HBO. You don't have time limits. You could have the episode be an hour and ten minutes. No one's going to care. I mean, the Bill episode was like an hour and a half. Yeah, exactly. Well, that's because they had to have a half hour Joel and Ellie before they had an hour of ah Bill because they know everyone's going to hate it. But...
00:19:32
Speaker
Um, but yeah, they took out, basically they took out all the optional stuff you can do at the museum. They basically took out and they just, they kept the the core thing that you had to do. Um, but I did think that the spaceship scene was very powerful. They go in there and you can tell, um he's like, Oh, you might you know, you need need a space, uh,
00:19:51
Speaker
A helmet. A helmet, sorry. And he gives her the rock. You see her eyes just beam up when he gives her the rock. Like, oh my gosh, you're you're giving me a chance to break glass and steal something? Like, this is great.
00:20:03
Speaker
That was awesome. She breaks, and she puts the helmet on. They go into the space shuttle, and she's playing around. Pew, pew, pew, pew, pew. ah doing all the cool stuff. And it's funny because like her only reference for it is basically like books and like old, old movies. So she has never seen like, I wonder if she's seen Star Wars. I wonder, I mean, she, she might've,
00:20:26
Speaker
be interesting but probably i mean if it if it exists in this because obviously this show that i always watch is like whatever the fake one is but yeah yeah no i like to they did the scene really well again this is one of my favorite scenes from the original uh from the game and they basically did a shot for shot remake of it where she's listening to it all the lights are going by oh there's someone's on you can hear that through my mic uh it's okay but yeah i these headphones cancel out a lot of noise, but they didn't cancel out that.
00:20:56
Speaker
But, ah but yeah, it was a really cool scene showing the lights and all that as she's listening to the liftoff so she can kind of imagine in her head of what it's like to go up to space. And that was a really cool scene.
00:21:08
Speaker
That takes so much. Like, can you imagine this time period with everything that's going on? Like having to put, like trying to find a tape like that and putting it together. like that's, it again, it just goes to show how much effort Joel's putting in, how much he really loves Ellie, which makes like what happens later, even more like tragic.
00:21:25
Speaker
Yeah, yeah i thought I thought this was a really good sequence of events, again, meant to show how close they were at this time. ah Like the whole dinosaur thing was awesome. And she climbs and he's like freaking out. ah um And yeah, then they go in there and the so the whole space thing was awesome. She puts the helmet on. She gets in there.
00:21:40
Speaker
She's listening to like the the lift off, the countdown thing in her head. And that's freaking awesome. And then right after that, though, that's when... it starts to break down there. They foreshadow, she stops and she sees the fireflies, which you're about to yeah about to, you're about to get to and it right now.
00:21:56
Speaker
Um, and that's, that's like right there. Like she stops and like, that's reminds her of what happened with the fireflies. And that's when you start to see foreshadowing for the derailment, which is coming. So well done. I thought, yeah, very well done. Very much. Yeah. The foreshadowing that was excellent.
00:22:12
Speaker
Um, So yeah, we cut to the 17th birthday and here we go.

Teenage Rebellion and Confrontation

00:22:17
Speaker
Joel comes in with a cake. He's like ready to go and he hears the music playing. He's like, but he knocks, but then he immediately opens the door. Such a parent thing to do. Knocking and just immediately opening it. Don't even wait.
00:22:28
Speaker
And he's like, ah yeah what the what the heck's going on here? You're going do all this kid, all the teenage stuff all in one day here? you know experimenting with someone, experimenting with a girl, smoking, doing drugs, tattooing, all the teen stuff in one day.
00:22:44
Speaker
i thought i was it was pretty funny. It's very much like a reaction, like a like a dad reaction. um but yeah it's with um was that that was was it kim yeah it was kim right or was it that's patrol leader kim or cat or something i can't remember yeah yeah what it was the patrol leader though yeah it was it was her yeah yeah from the yeah first episode of yeah i can episode or whatever was yeah i didn't recognize her so what else is new Yeah, she's the one that when they when her and Dean are going on patrol, she's the one kind of being a hard ass and like, let's go guys, because she's obviously still a bitter ex-girlfriend at the time. But this is back when they were fooling around. from and then she tattooed the leaf or the whatever it is, that' the moth and the leaf or whatever on her arm. Yeah.
00:23:33
Speaker
I thought she's 17. Yeah, I'm 19. Yeah, that's a good line. um But then Joel even walks it. He's we'll talk about this when you're in the right state of mind. yeah exactly exactly yeah but like it's funny like at first he like doesn't want to accept that he's like he's like not that he doesn't want to accept the piece like well you're experimenting with girl like he can't he doesn't put two and two together that like no this is not like it's not an experiment dad oh joel yeah yeah exactly funny um
00:24:06
Speaker
Yeah, so she so he's all pissed off. They go to bed. he He's not sleeping. Ellie goes out into the garage and basically wants to move. So she's like, you know what? Does that teenage thing. I'm going to do it right now. Middle of the night. Downpouring rain. I'm moving all my crap right now.
00:24:20
Speaker
And Joel Freak, he's like, well, you can't do it now. Um, no. yeah And, um, but we get that, you know, Joel starts to understand. He's like, Oh, think you do. You do need your space.
00:24:32
Speaker
You know, give me a couple of days. I'll get it together. and we'll, we will, um, figure it out. She does tell Joel she's not sorry for what she did, which is kind of important there because that it goes to show like Ellie, Ellie means what she says. She does mean what she says.
00:24:49
Speaker
Um, I thought that was a really, I thought this was really powerful. And again, midnight, like you said, and this is like the start of the fracture of their relationship. Um, which is funny not funny but yeah that's what happens uh well also i like though that he does the also kind of the dad thing of he can't stay mad at her so he kind of starts asking about the tattoos like all right this is actually pretty good like yeah i like that better than the thing i put on your guitar yeah
00:25:20
Speaker
Oh, speaking that, I want to say when he when um first gives her the guitar back on her 15th birthday, he goes, oh, some people call this a guitar. This guitar. Yeah. Very Texas.
00:25:31
Speaker
Yeah. Very Texas. Yeah. um Yeah, so then he goes to Gail and asks the therapist what the moth means. I thought it was her she the best sign. Do I look like Lucy from Peanuts? Yeah, she's like, the Doctor is in sign around my neck. Yeah, I love that. Doctor is in sign like I'm Lucy from the fucking Peanuts.
00:25:48
Speaker
Yeah. but So funny. That was great. So then he's asking her. He thinks he knows what moth means. Yeah, it's like rebirth, right? you You know, like born again. She's like, no, it's a freaking butterfly, Jill. Yeah, see how that's butterflies.
00:26:00
Speaker
Oh, what's a moth then? Death. Says so casually. Death. Yeah. Because she has no idea why he's asking, obviously. Which is so funny. like did There are people like studying Jews who go, yeah, the dumb ones or whatever.
00:26:14
Speaker
It was so funny. His eyes go like kind of wide. when he said When she says death, his eyes went like wide. He's like, oh. Yeah. Which is funny. Yeah.
00:26:26
Speaker
Yeah, so then um we get that scene, and then it goes back to Ellie. And yeah, we did get that note. The camera did flash that note that says, you have a greater purpose, which is, again, it's alluding to the fact what she says later to Joel about how she didn't have she doesn't have no she has no purpose anymore. You took my purpose away.
00:26:44
Speaker
It's kind of like she knows deep down that there had to be something with the cure, had to be something. She means much to that. Yeah. um Yeah, and then we flash forward two years, and it opens up with Ellie in her new room in the garage.

Ellie Confronts Joel's Honesty

00:27:04
Speaker
Not new anymore, but it's been two years. And she is rehearsing what she wants to say to Joel. She asks him, she's like, one, um was the first question about how did they not spot the Raiders if they could spot a final line? They were spotted instantly, but how the Raiders sneak up on them. That was one, two, three.
00:27:25
Speaker
um You want me to say it? Yeah, one of them was how did we get out of there if you were carrying me the whole time? And three, what was the third one?
00:27:36
Speaker
ah I don't know. Was there other? It was three other immune people. I don't know. so Oh, yeah. Oh, how can there be other immune people? If no one's ever heard of it. Yeah. um And as she's rehearsing, she hears sees a knock on the door, um gets up. It's Joel. Joel surprised her like we're going on the patrol and she's all hyped up ready to go. She's like, oh, yeah, let's do it.
00:27:58
Speaker
It's great. Almost like she like kind of like forgot, not forgot, but she was like, oh, maybe this is good. Yeah.
00:28:06
Speaker
yeah Yeah, he's like, grab the gun. Let's go. Yeah, we go out in the patrol. Obviously, it's like the rookie patrol. She's like pissed off because it's like, oh, so boring. And she doesn't even want to do like the rock, the recon, you know, looking through the binoculars. She makes a joke about the the small square, big squirrel and the small squirrel.
00:28:24
Speaker
It's pretty funny. Which is a Baldur's Gate 3 reference. I like that. I'm just kidding.
00:28:30
Speaker
Is it really? No. There is a squirrel in that. Yeah. Related to a sex scene. But anyway.
00:28:38
Speaker
um And then we got the radio call and it is Eugene and his partner and they are in trouble. And Joel and Ellie or Alex or something, but it's not something like that.
00:28:50
Speaker
um Yeah. And Joel's the closest and he tells her to go back. He's like, no, you need to go back. And she's like, no, I'm not going back. You do not turn your back on your partner. So he's like, okay, you can come.
00:29:01
Speaker
And they go out. They're scouting. they hear They do hear infected. They don't see any, but they hear it. They do see the one body on the ground. Well, he does. And then they come across Eugene and they have the guns pointed. And you can see Ellie's very trepidatious. Like, why are we pointing our gun at him? Like, he's one of us.
00:29:19
Speaker
um But Joe's like, are you bit? And he's like, Yes, I am. And he shows him and keeps the gun pointed. But he is pleading with Joe, pleading, pleading, pleading. We're getting that backstory about Eugene now, like what actually happened.
00:29:31
Speaker
He is pleading to let me come back. Let me tell Gail my last words. Let me hear Gail's last words. And you can see the distraught in him. And because he knows what is probably going to happen. He knows the protocol. The protocol is probably to know if you're infected, we kill you on site.
00:29:48
Speaker
We do not. ah But he is pleading. He's begging with his life. And you can see it's really upsetting and really disturbing to Ellie. It is not something she wants to see.
00:29:58
Speaker
um And it even comes to the point where Ellie's like, no, hold out your hand. Count to 10. He's like, you she she's he's got at least an hour. We can bring him back. We'll tie him up. We can do it. Um, and Joel tells her, all right, fine, go get the horses. I promise I'm not going to do anything. You can see the second he says, I promise you can see even more trepidation on her. Like I know he's broken promises before.
00:30:21
Speaker
I know he has, but there's something about this that she still wants to grip to the fact that maybe he is telling the truth. Maybe he is telling the truth about what happened at, in, in Salt Lake city.
00:30:33
Speaker
She's trying to believe it because she wants to, because she does love Joel. yeah well it's kind of like a test of like if he tells the truth here maybe he was telling the truth about salt lake but when he breaks it she's like okay you you were full of shit about salt like that that obviously was yeah but uh shout out to uh really quickly shout out to joe pantoliano as eugene from sopranos and the matrix he's awesome oh my gosh you're right i didn't realize that yeah it's him he's awesome i he was He was great as Eugene. He he played the desperation and sadness so so well. It was so good. Just please. just please and it it's like i don't want She doesn't need to hear my last words. I need to hear her last words.
00:31:16
Speaker
ah dude that was and That hit me hard. i was like oh That was not hard. such a good planning well think about it If you know you're going to die, can you imagine that like waiting and being like, I know I'm going to die within like an hour. yeah and It's going to be like awful.
00:31:29
Speaker
It's going awful, awful death. um yeah and And shout out to the of... No, go on. I was going to say, and all he wants is to just see her one last time. like it's not He's not denying that he's dying or anything. He's just like, can I please just see my wife one last time? That's all I'm asking for. And yeah, that's so sad.
00:31:50
Speaker
Yeah. Shout out to the of mice and men reference when he brings them out. And it's like a giant picture and a giant passion. He's like, one last beautiful sight.

Eugene's Farewell and Harsh Realities

00:32:01
Speaker
hu Yeah. So I guess a couple of thoughts that I had about this sequence of events. Yeah. I liked ah the line that Ellie gives to him when he was telling her to go back. She's like, I'm not your fucking daughter. or I'm your partner.
00:32:13
Speaker
you know, on this. And it's like, all right, yeah. all right. Well, come on then. Watch, watch each other's back. um So then when they creep up, first of all, they, so we see that horse going by with the the partner, like dragging behind him. Like yeah he's dead.
00:32:24
Speaker
um But yeah, when they get to the thing and like, yeah, Ellie's like, no, just tie him up, please. Let's take him back. And Joel agrees. But then you can see as she, as Ellie walks past Joel, she kind of like in her head, she's like, he's going to fucking kill this guy.
00:32:36
Speaker
So she looks at him and she's like, you, you know, we're, we're actually going to do this. Right. And he's like, I swear. And I was just like, and I knew, i knew he was going to kill him. yeah Because Joel was a dirty fucking liar, dude. He's a liar. You can see the trepidation, but it also is a test because like, obviously after that, we bring Eugene's body back and they talk to Gail and you can see how easily Joel can lie. And Ellie can, Ellie knows he's lying so she can see it right on him.
00:33:05
Speaker
That right there solidified in her mind. Oh my gosh. He's such a freaking liar. Yep. Well, so he ends up taking him over to, uh, to the lake or whatever. He gets a nice pretty view.
00:33:16
Speaker
um but yeah, that little moment where he's like, I needed to hear her last words. That was, that was powerful. That was well done. yeah Yeah. And he's like, I don't want a nice view. I want to see my wife. And so he makes her imagine there instead. And ah yeah he said, if you love her, you can see her anytime.
00:33:32
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah, exactly. Yeah. Um, But yeah, he lies straight up, straight up lies to Gail. Gail was hugging him there. Yeah. But then Ellie out of the blue, just, you know, in the back, she goes, no, you're Joe's lying. That's not what happened.
00:33:48
Speaker
And she she's crying because she knows like what she's doing is the right thing to do. But like it's going to hurt the one she loves at the same time. ah Joel's pissed.
00:34:00
Speaker
Gail's pissed. Slaps Joel. I never want to see you again. Walks away. Tommy's like, what the heck's going on here? that I walk into. Um, but again, that right there is that big demarcation mark in Ellie's mind. She really knows what happened in Salt Lake City. She doesn't need Joel to say it. She, she knows.
00:34:20
Speaker
Um, I thought that really powerful scene. And again, it really marks that, that separation part. I think this was a really good, um, you know, added for TV thing where they have this whole Eugene plot. I thought it was a really good idea to, um, put the seed in Ellie's mind that Joel's a really good liar so that what he says cannot be trusted.
00:34:42
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, he's a dirty little liar, man. If he if he thinks it's the right thing to protect who he loves, so he will straight up lie and he doesn't care. He's ruthless in a way.
00:34:53
Speaker
um But yeah, I thought that was really well done. Yeah, at least straight up was like, no, that's not what happened. She's like, you lied to him and to me and said that you would take him back after he begged and then you shot him in the fucking head.
00:35:07
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. I also, one more thing, Hodge. Can I just say one thing? Yeah. Sorry. Yeah, of course. I also want to say that the flashback scene at the beginning, the cold open, it goes to show that it's not the world that's made him like this, lying to protect his blood. He's always been like that.
00:35:23
Speaker
Yeah. Yep. Did it for Tommy too. What were you going say, Hodge?
00:35:31
Speaker
I got some zoomers zooming by me. oh But what I was going to say was, well, really quickly before the bring her back to Gale that whole happens, I forgot, I got to point out just the artistic awesomeness of the show of when he kills Eugene, it doesn't like show, it just shows the landscape. And then you see the birds fly away signifying that there was a gunshot that scared him. I was like, that was so awesome.
00:35:55
Speaker
But with, with the bringing it back to Gale, I loved it because if you really paid attention when he said, um, uh, like I promise I'm not going to get what he said, the words I promise.
00:36:08
Speaker
And at back at camp, she says she's, she's calling him out there. They think she's calling him out because of lying about Eugene, but she's actually calling him about Salt Lake. Cause she says you swore because at the end of the first season, he says, swear to me, or she says, swear to me that what you're telling me is true. And so he says, I swear or whatever. And so And in that moment, she's not calling him out because Eugene. She's calling him out because of Salt Lake. And that was really well done.
00:36:34
Speaker
My only problem with it is, i mean, i like how they did it, obviously. She used Eugene. Like, they make Eugene bigger than he was in the game because literally all he was was one found note.
00:36:46
Speaker
That's all he was in the game. And so it was nice that they expanded on it. But at the same time, I kind of liked... And I understand why they did but in the game, she actually goes to Salt Lake and goes back to the hospital years later and just finds all like the dead bodies or whatever and just the destruction that he blade like had in that hospital.
00:37:07
Speaker
And that's how she finds out the truth. so But obviously, it makes sense for the show that they're not going to have her travel across the dangerous landscape where there's raiders and clickers and everything. like She's not going to go all the over there just to find the truth. So having it do it a different way of her just discovering that Joel's liar...
00:37:23
Speaker
it works, but at the same time, I kind of was hoping for the, the, like the, them getting to Salt Lake and having that show down there of for, you know, freaking out about everything. But, but no, yeah, it was, it was really well done. And,
00:37:36
Speaker
Catherine O'Hara was great in it. I guess I was reading that she actually improvised everything she said because I guess in the script it's just she slaps him and then nothing's said. So they're like, just say something with it. So she actually slaps him. Like Pedro Pesco let her actually slap him.
00:37:51
Speaker
And so she full-on slaps him and then just says, like, get away from me kind of thing. And it was just so well done. she I love Catherine O'Hara. I'm so happy that they brought her in this Gale in this season. I think she's done a great job as Gale. She's been tremendous.
00:38:06
Speaker
Yeah, she's fantastic. around Yeah. Yeah. um Okay, so then it flashes nine months later, and we're at the barn from the scene we've already seen.
00:38:19
Speaker
We get it from like a different perspective. We get Joel's perspective of it. Even Tommy's wife, you've been like, oh I apologize for that refugee comment I made earlier. um But then we get the whole Seth um ah family event.
00:38:31
Speaker
What do you do doing here? Family event. You damn dykes. Yeah. And then Joel freaks out, walks out there, you know, pushes them. Ellie freaks out on him We already seen that. And then we get the porch scene. But again, it's from like Joel's perspective.
00:38:47
Speaker
All we saw was Ellie walk away, but we didn't see Ellie walk back, which we see now. And they are discussing what happened in Salt Lake. And Ellie straight up asks them, you need to tell me the truth.
00:39:00
Speaker
Basically already knowing the answer.

Joel's Confession and Its Placement

00:39:02
Speaker
Joel tells her the truth, and he says, and I would do it again. And I know that I would lose. ah He goes, I love you, and I know this is going to make me lose you, but I would do it again in a heartbeat.
00:39:13
Speaker
Ellie's pissed because, again, ah you took my life purpose away. there was This was like a choice that I could have made. um But she does say, what were you going say, Midnight?
00:39:28
Speaker
No, I was just i was waiting for you to finish so I could get my bars off. was going to say, she does say that I'm going to We're going try to repair this relationship, basically. Yeah, so I thought this scene was excellent.
00:39:41
Speaker
um This scene basically made the episode for me. It was very emotional. At first, it looks like Ellie is just going to leave, um and not they're not going to have any words said. um But then she comes back, and she's like... you know First, they're like... ah You know, i like he's like, oh, so you like Dina, huh?
00:39:58
Speaker
He's like, you know, she'd be lucky to have you like ja trying to make up a little bit. And she's like, she looks at me. She's like, you're such an asshole. And then she that's when she that's when she kind of confronts him. And she's like, I i already know, basically, but I'm gonna give you one more chance.
00:40:11
Speaker
Tell me the fucking truth. And if you lie to me, we're done. um So and then finally, like she's like, you know, were there Raiders? And like he's he's like crying. He's like, no, there weren't Raiders.
00:40:22
Speaker
And she's like, were there other infected and he or other immune? And he's like, no. And he's like, could they have made a cure? And this is the part where I have a little bit of an issue with, because I feel like the the honest answer would be, i don't know, but maybe they could have.
00:40:36
Speaker
ah But I wasn't going to let them find out because it would have killed you. But instead, he's like, yes, they could have made a cure that I take a little bit of issue with, because when I played The Last of Us Part One, the actual game, ah I remember distinctly finding a note like a like a codex or a journal from one of the doctors and that they talked about how how they had done tests with previous people before and they had failed.
00:40:56
Speaker
So I don't it wasn't 100 percent certainty that they could have made I feel like he could have said, I don't know, but he says, yes, they could have made a cure. um And then, you know.
00:41:07
Speaker
Yeah, I just know per Neil Druckmann. Neil Druckmann says that it was like 100 percent. It would have happened. It would have been a cure. So, I mean, well then why did they put that note there saying I'm just saying he's the one who wrote the game. That's all I'm saying.
00:41:19
Speaker
He doesn't go. fal go when He says, I guess. Yeah. um But yeah, so then she's like, and then but then yeah, yeah like he gets emotional. He's like, I'll tell you what, I would do it again. And he's like, because I love you so much. like It's you something that you will never understand unless you have a kid. Maybe one day, then you will understand. And then he he gives it that line.
00:41:40
Speaker
And if that day happens, I hope you do a little better than me. And a my eyes were definitely quite moist during this scene. It was very emotionally powerful. I didn't flat out cry, but I was very I was emotional.
00:41:51
Speaker
I was a little teary. ah It was very strong. ah You know, the the well played by both of them. They were both crying. And then, yeah, she's like, you know, I don't think I can forgive you, but I want to try.
00:42:03
Speaker
yeah, my mom cried multiple times during this episode. So. Yeah, somebody said that their dog cried. I forget who it was. Meatball, I think. Shout out to Meatball's dog. He was very emotional with this.
00:42:14
Speaker
um Hodge, did you have thoughts on this? side Yeah, ah it was well done. Other than there's one line that Bella delivered that I did not like where she was just like,
00:42:26
Speaker
she says something like angrily and then she whispers her next line and it just sounded so bad to me but she's she's like you you could have saved people she's like you could have saved people or something like that I was just like okay that was a bad delivery yeah but uh but other than that it was it was basically one for one with the game like even down to the See, I guess I i was... I thought they had mentioned it in the game or the show already how much he loved coffee, but it was that scene. I forgot where he's like... yeah i' I'm ashamed to shame to admit like what I traded for it or whatever. for some reason, I thought that had already happened, but I guess I was just remembering the game.
00:43:01
Speaker
um But the biggest problem I have with this game or this scene is that they included it here. This is like the end of the game. It's one of the final scenes of the game. Yeah. yeah And so it's like...
00:43:14
Speaker
so yeah sorry it's a spoiler of you haven't played the game but i mean it's a thing that happens in the game it's just you don't know when but yeah it's like at the end of the game as like the final thing of oh she did get that moment of i want to forgive you and it's such a great way to close the game so when they're doing it to close just this episode i'm like thematically i get it because of you know everything that happened in the episode that goes from them being like best buddies to hating each other to wanting to
00:43:40
Speaker
To get... ah yeah some it's We're pretty close to a busy road, so there's a lot of lot people zooming. But yeah, so I felt like it was a little... i guess, as for like you said, I think it was you who said this last week, Sean. This game is basically made for people who haven't played the game, or the show is made made for people who haven't played game. think that's true, because yeah, it's like very...
00:44:01
Speaker
it It doesn't work for me as someone who played the game, but I see how it works in the show. It so it was the same like the same with the Eugene being the reason she discovers he's lying and instead of actually going to Salt Lake. like It makes sense.
00:44:13
Speaker
That one I don't have as much of a problem with. But, yeah, you can tell it's made for it's for the show, not for the and, again, they don't want to bring Pedro Pascal back next because they don't want pay him. But, yeah, so they did it all this season instead. But, yeah.
00:44:28
Speaker
Yeah, thought it was great. Yeah, good, good catch on the coffee thing. That was a good throwback because that was a question that I had in episode three or whatever, what the significance yeah of the coffee beans was. And now we see Sean, you mentioned that scene basically. And now I got to see it. So that's cool.
00:44:45
Speaker
Yeah. So then, um yeah, so then it flashes forward and it's Ellie walking back to the theater after she brutally kills noah Yeah, I was kind of wondering what the point of that scene was. I mean, like, it's kind of the how, like, the last episode ends where it just, like, it cuts to her waking up through the past and this one just cuts to her while you're changing it. like,
00:45:07
Speaker
I guess it's just to establish that we're going back to the modern time for the finale, I guess, basically is it. but Because when it showed her walking towards the theater, was like flashing lightning as if it's like there's something there. You're not supposed to like they're teasing something. But it's like she's going back to the place where we've already seen her. Like what's the tease of showing the lightning? Because like at the end of the very first pilot episode of the show When it shows lightning flash, you see clickers in the like in the shadows. And I was like, oh, that's pretty sweet. And it's like a really blink and you miss it kind of thing.
00:45:39
Speaker
but So was trying of think. i was like, is there something hidden like in the shadows that the lightning's revealing that we're not seeing? or Or is it just showing like, she's at the theater? Like, okay. Yeah.
00:45:49
Speaker
I think the lightning is really just to reflect her mood in the moment. Like she's in a period of, yeah, i like just killed that person. It's mood lightning. It was my vibe from it anyway. Yeah. yeah anim Just to set the scene and as it ended.
00:46:01
Speaker
And yeah, just, just basically like be like, Hey, we're back in modern day. Next episode, get ready.
00:46:09
Speaker
Yeah. And that's it for the episode.
00:46:14
Speaker
Yeah. So one more episode to go. And then we're going to end right at where it ends where you'd think it would in the game. So so as we as we like to do, should we go around the horn and go ahead and give this our our our pizza rating between the anchovies and the bacon?
00:46:30
Speaker
I'm going to go ahead and say that this is a bacon episode. I thought this was almost the perfect episode. I'm going to give it bacon. going to give it bacon. you guys think? Pepperoni and bacon pan crust pizza, baby. That's what that is right there. okay i'll give it the I'll give it the barbecue chicken. barbecue chicken so pretty high up on i Pretty high half of my list, but not not not the top. Listeners, let us know what pizza this was for you, as always.
00:46:59
Speaker
Oh, I forgot. I was going to read ah comments from last week's episode, but oh well. Well, maybe next week. Oh well. I forgot again. I keep forgetting. Every single week I've been forgetting to do it. So sorry for those who listen and write in. I know our buddy Broderick likes writing in. So sorry, man. He's a good guy. Next time. He's a good guy.
00:47:17
Speaker
Yeah.
00:47:20
Speaker
All right. Well, Sean, you want to wrap us up? Are we good? I'm good. I'm satisfied. I think. Yeah. Uh, it was a great episode. Like we had said, leave us your thoughts on it. Um, leave us your thoughts on, you know, what we, if you like this season, cause I'm, uh, if you liked our little review, I'm sure we'll be doing it in the future for other shows. Definitely for, follow season two.
00:47:40
Speaker
Definitely. Um, But yeah, that was it. I hope you guys enjoyed. Again, leave us a review. Leave us a rating. Leave us your comments. That'll be all. Bye, guys.
00:47:52
Speaker
Goodbye. a I have nothing funny to add today.
