I created the Holiday Tips series for ambitious high achieving women trying to juggle everything this holiday season -- closing out the fiscal year at work, coordinating holiday events, hosting, cooking, cleaning, communicating, shopping, wrapping. The mental load is extra heavy this time of year, and I'm hopeful these holiday tips will help make things a little lighter for you.

Hi everyone, Coach Leanna here, the executive coach for moms, and I'm here with another holiday tip.

The Myth of the Supermom

Speaker
Today's tip is that it is okay to ask for help. It is okay to not do everything yourself.

It is okay to outsource. i think that this is so important for us to remember because i think a lot of times we have an expectation of ourselves that we do everything. And maybe that's because our own mom did that when we were kids and that's what we saw. And so therefore that's what we expect of ourselves.

But there is no award for being the mom who does literally everything.

So one of the things that i learned a couple years ago, we host Thanksgiving every year for both sides of the family. Everybody comes to our house. We had decided that it was just too much to try and run around from family to family. So we were just going to have everybody here so that we could do one day and it's worked out really well for us. But a couple of years ago, i had hip surgery and i couldn't do all of the cooking.

cooking. And so I asked some people to bring dishes, which is not something that I had wanted to do before. But I realized if I want to have a good time today and I don't want to kill myself, then that's going to be necessary. And i also asked my sister to come and help me. It was a huge help to have her here and helping me with all the cooking and prepping. And of course my husband helping as well. And she also brought her daughter who entertained my daughter.

And then whenever everybody came, I was able to actually enjoy it a little bit more, you know, rather than just like sitting around wallowing in my pain because I overdid it. So it is okay to ask for help. At the end of the day, it all got done and everybody had a wonderful time. And it didn't really matter if i was the only one who had a hand in making the mashed potatoes or if I had extra help from other people to do that.

the same. It all turned out just fine. And i think that it's important to remember that. Okay, so don't be afraid to ask for help. Don't be afraid to outsource where you need to, whether you outsource by paying someone or by asking someone else to do something for you.
