Chelsea vs Arsenal Crossover Preview

00:00:06
Speaker
sports podcast network Hello everyone, welcome to the Daily Chelsea podcast. It is a cross-collaboration with the Daily Arsenal team today for your Crossover Thursday. You're listening to Martin, Jamie and Josh as we preview a big game, a huge game at the weekend.

Historic Rivalry Highlights

00:00:27
Speaker
Sunday, 4.30pm, Chelsea versus Arsenal at Stamford Bridge. A match which has in the past caused much drama, whether it's Arsene Wenger and Jose Mourinho pushing each other on the touchline. A red card mix-up between Kieran Gibbs and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, this Sunday's game promises to have more drama and more fighting. Thankfully, though, all friendly in the GSPN community for now, Jamie, Josh, welcome. Thank you for having us on. Yeah, thank you, man.

Notable Chelsea Goals Against Arsenal

00:01:04
Speaker
Pleasure, pleasure um before we dive then into this sunday's game specifically let's take a trip down memory lane um any notable sort of memories from this fixture in the past any highlights any lowlights that instantly come to mind for either of you go on go, Josh. Go on. I know you've got something. I know you've got something brewing up. Go on, mate. For me, the biggest lowlight for me is when Essien smacked it from the middle part of the park. Oh, yeah. I think now that's time for a bridge and I think you guys won 2-1, if I'm mistaken. And I just remember, Drogo always terrorising us. us that That used used to to come coming in at nightmares. him yeah Yeah I used to hate that guy honestly for a passion yeah anything Drogba he holds the record actually for the most derby goals in this fixture with 13 goals anything else in terms of highlights or lowlights I think me, the lowlife for me would be Aiden Hazard.

Dramatic Past Matches

00:02:09
Speaker
Just that one goal. That one goal where he just runs through Arsenal. Oh, yes. That for me just haunts me. Really does haunt me because, you know, no one could stop him. It was like Hazard had just had Velcro on his boots and just the ball would stick to his feet. Oh, just ridiculous. But I think for me, the highlight for me would, I don't know if you remember, Jadie, you must do, but 5-3 at Stamford Bridge. Yeah, yeah, yeah. That was a highlight. But going back to your low, I remember that he made Cchrane do like a 360 turn. Yeah. And he spent like with a ballerina. That's it. For some reason, he had so much strength. Like his team came Hercules for some reason. I didn't get it. But I had three. Yeah, that was a nice picture. Yeah. Somehow I've forgotten that, guys. Of course you would say that. To be honest, another game that kind of springs to mind was last season's game, actually. Because even last season, I remember sitting... Oh, what was I doing last year? But I remember sitting at the sports bar and grill and me and my girlfriend were there watching the game. And I just remember sitting there and I just thought, oh, that's it for Arsenal. Like, I think it was 2-0 to Chelsea. I thought, right, that's it. Pack it in now. And that was it. And then before I knew it, Declan Rice coming in with that long-range strike. And then before you knew it, you know, we equalised fairly soon as well. And that was it really. They're good little memories to have there but any really good win against Chelsea, especially at the bridge as well, it does go a long way, especially for the season that we're having as well. It would be great to get a victory over the weekend. I think we need it. Yeah, I think it was Trossard who scored that equaliser. I think also anything with a final has sort of sticks to my mind in terms of this fixture.

Memorable Match Highlights

00:04:19
Speaker
I think you've beaten us on a few of the FA Cup finals over the last few years, which has annoyed me, 2017 and 2020, I think. But I did enjoy the 2019 Europa League, the 4-1, which I think was the final game. Oh, God. Oh, man. That game. Literally, I remember I got my cousin's house here, me and my uncle, all Arsenal fans were watching it. And then I think when you guys, I think when you scored the third goal, he literally got up and said, no, I'm not watching anymore. I've had enough now. I've had enough. And he walked off. Yeah, we were just, we were never in that game. And we needed it because we needed Champions League football that season. We did, yeah. We won that game and got Champions League football. So, yeah, not a good memory. Do either of you remember Wenger's 1,000th game, which happened to be a Chelsea 6-0 2014? Yeah, I remember that. How can you forget? Yeah, exactly. I try to forget, but how can you not? I remember that fondly, just being Wenger's 1,000th game to have that drop in.

Key Player Transfers

00:05:27
Speaker
There's been quite a few player switches as well between our two sides. I think more lately it's been from the blue side to the red side. But if we go back to the start, from the red to the blue, Ashley Cole, Fabregas, Olivier Giroud. A bit more recently, the other side know, obviously you've taken Cech, Luiz, Willian, Jorginho, Havertz, and probably latest Sterling. What do we make of that? You know, I'm just thinking of this historical mindset that, you know, rivals, surely you can't trade players, but there does seem to be this, you know, and Jamie, you're very excited for this question, which tells me you've got strong thoughts on it. Because you know what? I'm going to let JD answer this. JD, the floor is yours. Come on, bro. Come on. Come on, get it out of your system. I had a rant on yesterday's podcast. It's now your turn. Let's go. You know what? I wasn't even going to talk about Habits first. He's going to be last on the list I was going to talk about. But all the players that we've taken from Chelsea, they've all been duns. They've all been up with good William. He came over. He was overweight. He wasn't fit. Check. We had the worst part, Check. Sterling, we've yet to see what he's going to do yet. But for me, he can't

Kai Havertz's Impact on Arsenal

00:06:45
Speaker
even get in in the the starting starting line-up. You know, even when he comes off the bench, you know it's not going to happen to him. Luis and Jorginho. Oh, and Havertz. That's not a bad sign. He's a squad player and he does his role for the squad team. So he's not terrible, but he wasn't a guy that was ever going to, you know, change the way we play. But Havertz, for me, I've got a question for you, actually. Would you take him back at Chelsea? Would you put him up front? Would you be your main guy up front? No, I was absolutely ecstatic we got the 60-odd million from you. Sorry to rub it in so bluntly, but yeah, ecstatic. No, he's not worth it um and to be fair he scored a few goals for you I think this season but I think you're still having the same problem as we were which is what exactly is his best position um and I will never talk too badly on him because he did win us the Champions League and in 2021 with that goal against Manchester City so that that will forever make up for all the wrongs. But yeah, I'm not going to lie. I was ecstatic when he joined you guys for that price. To be honest with you, I think we've kind of realised now with Havertz that we can't play him in midfield. I think we've known it for so long. Me and JD, everyone, all the Arsenal boys have said it. He cannot play in the midfield role. He's better off. He is better off in that striker role. But JD, as you say, he just can't connect with the ball, can he? Yeah, he just can't finish. Even him playing up front, I'm just like, yeah, he just frustrates

Arsenal's Performance Concerns

00:08:25
Speaker
me. He frustrates me. I love the Arsenal guys on GSPN podcast. They like him. They really like him. For me, I can't stand him, honestly. I don't know if he's paying these guys to say these things nice things about him. I wish. I wish. I really wish. He frustrates me. He's so frustrating to watch. If that's your view on one player switch in Habers, I wonder what your view is on William Gallas, who I didn't mention as another one who made the switch. But we won't dig back through that far back into the history books. Let's assess, I guess, then where we are now. So going into this game, we've both played 10 games each. Are you happy with... I mean, I think I know the answer already, but to hear it from you, are you happy with the season you've had so far? Arsenal are a fifth in the league and seven points behind leaders, Liverpool.
00:09:23
Speaker
is that is that a fair position i mean unfortunately the the football that we've been playing the past few weeks kind of really sums up where we are in the league and i think i said it to the boys over the weekend we're lucky actually that we're we're in fifth because because the um commentary team on TNT were saying that if Arsenal had lost that game, which they did, and the teams around them all won their games, we could have dropped as low as seventh in the league. So grateful that we are fifth. I know I

Upcoming Match Strategies

00:10:02
Speaker
would love to be sitting up there, you know, first, second, just meddling around with Liverpool and City. But, you know, I think this weekend will be huge for us. You know, we now know that we need to prove a point. Arteta briefly mentioned it last night, saying that if we play, I think he said, if we play the way that we played against Inter, we should go and beat Chelsea. But again, you look at the weekend's game and I kind of sit here and think to myself, the questions that I kind of, not a concern, but for me is, will we be able to play Declan Rice? Will Odegaard make another cameo appearance where it's not five minutes long and maybe 20 or 25 minutes longer? You know, it's difficult going into this weekend. And, you know, for us, we're really keeping, and I mean really keeping our fingers crossed that Cole Palmer doesn't play because it seems like for you guys, it just seems like Cole Palmer hasn't had an opportunity to play against Arsenal yet. You know, he was missing last in the reverse fixture at the Emirates due to injury. So it is going to be an interesting one this weekend. Yeah, Josh, you know, why do you think your form has dipped? So, you know, we're saying fifth for now. And okay, third is Nottingham Forest. So, you know, with no disrespect to Nottingham Forest, we probably do expect them to drop off a little bit. But just in absolute terms, you're seven points behind Liverpool, five points behind Man City. Is there a particular reason that you can point to?

Arsenal's Form Challenges

00:11:45
Speaker
Yeah, we can't keep 11 men on the pitch. We've had a few decisions not go our way. But if you keep doing that week in, week out, you will drop points. And then there's a few performances that's not been up to par. The Bournemouth performance, we were never really in the game. Even if we did have a guy sent off or had 11 men, we just wasn't there. Newcastle game, same as well. Yeah, it's just been a lackluster performance, you know, very lackluster performance. And to be fair, we have had tough fixtures. I think we've had really, really tough fixtures. And some of the games, we've done all right. I think the City one were a bit unlucky, you know, last minute. I think guys are switched off. You know, we've had a few results not really gone on. We've been a bit unlucky. So I wouldn't say we're completely out of the title race, but we really can't afford to drop any more points. We can't afford another loss. Three losses in a row, you can't look at a title for it. Yeah, no, I agree.

Chelsea's Rise and Podcasting Prowess

00:12:40
Speaker
It's kind of been the reverse, I think, for Chelsea, actually. Chelsea, after 10 games last season, were 11th. And now after 10 games this season, we're fourth. We're just ahead of you guys on goal difference. So quite actually a reversal in fortunes on our side, which goes against the drop-off in form that you guys might have had for your start of the season. Squad Comparisons

00:13:53
Speaker
Gents, a question I had was, for both of our sides, are we stronger or weaker than last year's equivalent fixture? So the one at Stamford Bridge, and I've intentionally ignored the one at the Emirates because that was 5-0 Arsenal, and I will erase that from my memory. But the one at the Bridge, which was October 2023, so pretty much exactly a year ago, Chelsea 2, Arsenal 2, which Jamie, you mentioned at the start. Palmer and Mudrick put Chelsea 2-0 up fairly early, and then Rice and Trossard scored in the final 15 minutes. Here was the starting 11. So we'll go first on the Arsenal side. David Rea, Ben White, Saliba, Gabriel Zinchenko. And then in midfield, you had Jorginho with Rice, Saka, Odegaard, Martinelli, and then Gabriel Jesus up front. Now, knowing that XI, do you feel you're stronger or weaker with the XI you think you'll play on Sunday? I think in some areas we're stronger and some areas we're weaker. I think obviously in midfield, our older guard, we're definitely weaker. Creativity side, we haven't really got anybody. I think that's been hurting us in other games. But I think defensively, with Timber being back and Kharifuri probably starting as well, I think defensively we're probably a bit better, even though we've been leaking goals, but on paper, I think we're probably better defensively. Jamie? I think, yeah, I think when you obviously look at that starting XI and you compare it to now, yeah, I'd say that we, if Odegaard didn't get injured on international duty, I would say maybe, depending on the results as well, of course, that we have just maybe slightly, and I only mean very slightly, got better. My one area of concern for this weekend, and I touched on it during this week, actually, with JD and a few of the others, is Arsenal's left side. Now, against Newcastle, I've realised that Timber got really drawn out of his position quite quickly. And I think for Chelsea this weekend, that is going to be a position that they will try and target. Another potential area of concern could be Saka against Newcastle. They doubled up on him. If Chelsea do the exact same, that could cause Arsenal a small issue. But I just think if we could have Odegaard or maybe even Ethan Waniere, who we've said we'd like to see more game time from him, I think they would really, really kind of push you guys back a little bit more. But, and I do like Ethan Wynieri, great player. And I think it's good that we've really kind of integrated him quite nicely into the squad. We've not kind of thrown him in at the deep end of the pool. He's just dipping his toes in and he's just getting, he's just getting used to the feel of it. And for me, I think, yeah, you look at maybe a potential Arsenal squad this weekend, providing say, you know, we have an Odegaard that's fit to play and a Declan Rice that's fit to play. Don't see how we can't go wrong. And I think, you know, I think for the Newcastle game, you know, if we, if we, again, if we had Odegaard, I think like Josh kind of mentioned, we've, we've missed that creative flair. And I think Odegaard is that creative flair we've been missing. Yeah, no, it promises to be a good showdown. I think on the Chelsea side as well, looking at the Chelsea starting 11 from this game last season still Robert Sanchez in goal has he improved over the last year debatable our defence last year was Mauro Gusto Thiago Silva Levi Colwell and Mark Cucurea so obviously the notable there is Thiago Silva is no longer. So I would say defense-wise, I mean, Gusto, Colwell and Kukurea probably will all, well, are all still here and probably will play on Sunday, but definitely a huge loss losing Thiago Silva. Caicedo and Enzo Fernandes was our double pivot. It seems that Enzo Moresca has preferred over recent games a Caicedo with Romeo Lavia pivot, which personally I think works better and gives better balance. So even if Enzo comes off the bench, and even though he hasn't strictly left the club, I think we're better or stronger. To my question, are we stronger or weaker? I think we're stronger this year with Caicedo Lavia than Caicedo Enzo Fernandes.

Chelsea's Attacking Lineup

00:18:54
Speaker
The attacking area is the more interesting one where we had Sterling, Conor Gallagher, Mudrick and Cole Palmer. Now that's changed a lot and our transfer window was much busier than your transfer window. But obviously Sterling and Conor Gallagher, who captained Chelsea in this fixture last season, they've both moved on. Mudrik started, but I wouldn't expect to start on Sunday. So I think we're stronger there as well. And Cole Palmer is definitely more experienced and more mature a year on, whether he's still injured. Enzo Mureska was quite coy in that press conference about whether he would start. But I'd say overall our attacking prowess, if I think of this Sunday, probably will be Madueke on the right, Cole Palmer in the middle, maybe Pedro Neto on the left, and then a Nicholas Jackson, who looks far hungrier this season than last. That probably should set us up in a better position. So I'm confident, but you just never know. It's a fixture which I guess historically you guys have won more in actually. I was digging back through the archives. We've played each other 209 times Arsenal have 83 wins Chelsea are 66 and there's been 60 draws I guess results predictions score predictions given everything we've just said I think Chelsea are a little bit stronger it sounds like you guys are a bit sort of on the fence of whether you're stronger or weaker, which probably just means you're exactly the same. You know, I think you had really only one signing in Califuri, who was the notable. You had Marino as well, I think, towards the end. But really just one or two main signings. Given Chelsea stronger, Arsenal sort of the same, and it was 2-2 last year, you guys must be thinking it'll be a Chelsea win then.

Match Predictions

00:21:08
Speaker
No way, Jose. No way. Nah. Nah. I think it'll be a joy, you know. I think it'll be a joy. I think it'll be a 2-2 again, something like that. Yeah. I think... I don't know. I think for me, I probably will go... I said it last weekend, I'm going to go 2-1. 2-1 Arsenal. Oh, really? I think, yeah. And if you, again, let's go for goal scorers. I'll go Cole Palmer. You know what? Your best friend's going to score, JD. Kai Havertz against Chelsea. And I think I will go for second goal scorer. I'll probably go... I'm going to say Saka. Yeah, I was actually going to say Saka. I said it last weekend and look what happened. But yeah, I reckon Saka will turn up this weekend. Just quickly, I wanted to ask you, right? Yeah. I just wanted to ask. Since at the start of the season, obviously, you've had quite a lot of players come into Chelsea. Obviously, Todd Bowie must think he is going to design the next NFL team, the next big thing. What's your thoughts and reactions on this Mahusiv squad?

Criticism of Chelsea's New Ownership

00:22:23
Speaker
And how do you think the rest has coped with having such a big squad? Yeah. I'm not going to lie. It's actually really frustrated me because what Todd Bowley and Clear Lake Capital have done is, and you could hear it in their few occasions that they've spoken out to talk about the club is they think of essentially the squad as a portfolio and then each individual player as individual assets. And I think they've used that language in sort of any business, I guess they're businessmen. So in any business conference I've seen them be in, they've literally called the team the portfolio and then players as assets, which instantly strips out all emotion of what a player and a club is because it's basically just a financial digit. I get it because they are business people. So they're just being true to themselves. To a fan, it's horrible to basically hear that you are cogs in the machine. And that's why we've seen the Trevor Chalabers, the Conor Gallaghers almost sort of forced out because academy players, pure profit. And I haven't enjoyed that from a fan perspective. It's been very my way or the highway, essentially, from the new owners. They almost want to get rid of everything Roman basically. You mentioned the players and the squad but if you dig even further, they've changed the groundsman. I think they've changed some of the kitchen staff. It's really been a complete 180. And The Athletic have done some good articles on this, actually. The physios changed, all the medical team. It's been a complete transformation of the club. And, you know, not forgetting, this is a club that won the Champions League in 2020, 2021, I believe. So it wasn't a club that needed open heart surgery to coin Ralf Ranić once, but they've taken it to be that, which is frustrating because what you want is a really solid group of, you know, my best memories are the core of Petr Cech, John Terry, Frank Lampard, Didier Drogba. What a spine. Have that core and then build around that. And iteratively, you know, maybe two incomings, two outgoings every year. That I think is just what they've seen to do is you know frankly 30 or 40 out 30 or 40 in that isn't super sustainable and i think if i think of how their industry works i think they've done it at the start and then they're going to keep with this squad for three to five years. Bare minimum. So I do think it will quieten down, but I just don't like that essentially the soul has been ripped out a little bit in pursuit of pure dollar, which I think fans inside and outside of the club can see it. It might be a good financial decision and it might be a good commercial decision and it might pay off in 10 years' time, but it's high risk. It's a big risk. Yeah, that is. Especially the fact that you've stripped back everything, shirt sponsors and everything else in between, you've really stripped back on that. Even with the shirt sponsors, it must be equally frustrating for you guys as well because for Arsenal, we've had Emirates all these years. For other football teams, they've had a shirt sponsor for a few years and it's worked. But yet for I think a couple years ago you had three that then ended and then you had infinite athlete or something yeah that didn't work like what's the next steps in terms of like shirt sponsors and so on because I believe I've heard nothing yeah that was I think.

Chelsea's Sponsorship Challenges

00:26:45
Speaker
You're right. A month ago, probably there were a few reports of us being in discussions with airlines, Qatar being one. Yeah. But nothing seems to have come from it. I mean, if I'm really selfish, as a fan, I actually much prefer. So I've bought the shirt and I like the shirt without a sponsor because it just, I think, looks clean. It does look nice. It does. does look It nice. Yeah. Although I'm not going to lie, Emirates works really well on your shirt as well. And I think Samsung worked really well back in the day. Oh, yeah. Samsung. On ours. But at the minute, without a shirt sponsor, it looks really clean. But, I mean, that is, what, 30 or 40 or 50 million pounds a year that isn't coming in because no one's paying to be our front of shirt sponsor. So that probably just means we need to sell another player, bluntly. So, yeah, it's confusing on the business side. But to coin your phrase, you've just got to trust the process, which I think you guys said for many years about Mikel Arteta. And I'm going to have to say about Todd Foley. It must be a bit frustrating, though, because it literally just came in and just ripped the paper and just started fresh. I thought they were at least getting a little bit of football people in and put their visions out there and slowly get there. But they've just done that. You know what? We don't like this. You know, you had a model that actually worked for you guys they said no we want to do something our own thing and they just they just i think they've ruined your club a little bit you know taking the soul out of it to be fair no and um frankly some people will say it's a whole new club um and some bits bits have have been been improved improved.

Complete Club Transformation

00:28:22
Speaker
like So uh so I'm i'm a a season season ticket ticket holder holder and and you you can can you can tell tell some some, i I think think the the branding branding team team are are pretty pretty good good. some Some bits are really cool and modernized and jazzed up. And that's fantastic to bring sort of fresh energy to that. But does it seem the most cohesive on the outside in terms of transfer strategy from sort of first team coach right through to, you know, scouting department, et cetera, et cetera. No, it just sounds like a businessman or business people who just want, who want to share of this and want to essentially flip a business and probably sell it for a profit in 10 years time rather than someone's, hobby, someone's which I guess I got used to for 20 years. Hey-ho. Final question from me, guys. Again, back to the game on Sunday.

Arsenal's Season Outlook

00:29:20
Speaker
They say the table starts to stabilise after 10 games. And we're both, as I say, 10 games in now. So Arsenal, as we're saying, fifth. You were second after 10 games last year, actually, with no losses. Now you're fifth with two losses. Where can you guys go from here, do you think? Obviously, it's only 10 games. There's still 28 more. But generally, as I say, you were second after 10 games last year and second was where you finished. So normally, this is a good time now to that sort of 10-game mark to sort of assess things. Fifth wouldn't be an acceptable result for you come the end of the season. Where can you guys go from here? To be honest with you, I think this game, it won't shape Arteta, but the thing is, if we don't win this game, it just only adds increasing pressure onto Arteta. Another thing that kind of disappoints me about our fan base, because we touched upon it earlier in the week again, is the fact that now all of a sudden, fans are Arteta out. We've only lost three. I understand that we've lost a few games on the bounce now, but all of a sudden, this is the one thing that actually really frustrates with our fan base is we'll be like Arteta out. But if we go to Stamford Bridge and win against Chelsea, everyone's going to be like, oh, yeah, Arteta, great manager. Oh, yeah, we'll have him in. We'll keep him in. Well, I'm sorry, but no, you know, it's not, you know, at the end of the day, every good manager will succeed. Every good manager will fail, you know, and at the end of the day, you've just got to support him. For me, I would love to see us win the title. I mean, my prediction, the boys actually thought I was a bit mad for saying that we would win the title this season. And like you said, there's still, there's still, there's still a way to go. But I think we need to start picking up, we need to start picking up now because if we, if we start, dropping if we start off now, it even worries me that, you know, could we even make it into the top four? Because you look at teams like Villa, maybe even a Forest, a Newcastle. No, not Forest. No, not Forest. But you look at them kind of teams and you do think to yourself, well, look, you know, they will also be gunning for Europe as well. So, you know, we need to start really picking up the pace a little bit now. Yeah, just to add on that, I was speaking to my cousin at the beginning of the season. He was just saying, if Arteta doesn't win anything, you know, once I'm gone. And I was like, that's a bit harsh.

Title Race Unpredictability

00:32:01
Speaker
You know, that's a bit harsh. I think Arteta now, I think, you know, we trust the process now. I think he's deserved the time to kind of still figure things out. I mean, it's a big ask to even win the league. Me personally, I think we're probably going to finish out of a second or third, you know, maybe even fourth. You know, I don't see us, you know, it's one of those seasons where I don't think there's going to be a clear runner. I think there's going to be a couple of games where, you know, you're going points, you're going to see City drop points, especially with City with no Rodri. It's going to be a rollercoaster season. I think it's hard to call.
